Myrtles Plantation

Originally called “Laurel Grove,” Myrtles Plantation was an antebellum plantation built in 1796 by General David Bradford, who resided there until he was needed for the Whiskey Rebellion in 1799. Over time, the plantation was sold and passed from family to family.

Steeped with history and folklore and built above Tunica Indian Burial grounds, Myrtles Plantation continues to be a popular tourist attraction due to its association with paranormal activity, which has been featured in popular medias.

Now, Myrtles Plantation is a bed and breakfast with a full service restaurant, offering tours for visitors to experience one of America’s most haunted homes.

Myrtles Plantation: The South’s Spookiest House

Tucked away among the giant oak trees dripping with Spanish moss in Louisiana’s Plantation Country is “one of America’s most haunted homes.”   The 10-acre, 18th-century Myrtles Plantation , featured in Traveler’s 2008 Stay List Traveler’s 2008 Stay List , charms visitors with rocking chairs on the cast iron porch and cozy French furnishings in its B & B.   But all the Southern charm can’t detract from the eerie feeling people get as they wander around the mansion and grounds. Rumor has it, ghosts abound.

The most popular ghost to haunt the Myrtles is Chloe. According to the legend, in the 1800s Judge Clark Woodruff, the plantation’s owner, had an affair with Chloe, the household servant. When Judge Woodruff began having an affair with another girl, Chloe feared that she would be banned from the house and forced to work in the fields with the other slaves.

To prove herself worthy of remaining in the house, Chloe devised a plan. One night, she baked a cake and in the mix included some poisonous crushed oleander leaves, hoping to make his daughters sick so that she would have to nurse them back to health and secure herself a spot in the house. Her plan backfired, however, when the amount of poison caused the children to die. Fearing that they would be accused of murder by association, Chloe’s fellow slaves dragged her from bed that night, hanged her, then threw her body in the river. Some say that Chloe has appeared in their photos from the plantation and others hear the young girls laughing and playing at the Myrtles today.

You can hear these legends and others on a tour of the Myrtles. A walk through the house and stories about the history are offered on a daily basis. The Mystery Tours are held every Friday and Saturday evening, and guests sit around with a guide who tells about their personal experiences at the haunted mansion.

And today at 6 p.m., tickets will go on sale for the Halloween Mystery Tours, to be held both tonight and Saturday night.   Tickets are $10 and will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis at the plantation.

The Myrtles Plantation is located at 7747 U.S. Hwy 61, St. Francisville, LA, 70775.

It would have been nice if she had a microphone headset because we couldn't all hear her. The plantation was beautiful and heartwrenching. We loved the Airboat ride. Cory was our guide. He was a true New Orlean's gem. His knowledge of the swamp animals, birds and veneration added that extra touch. He took time to show us the alligators and explain their behavior. Best event so far! • xeriahk2024 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles THEY LEFT ME! Read to the end please and read the other reviews. Firstly this review is for this particular tour company... the plantation in itself is something everyone should visit but I can not recommend this tour company! There are other companies that offer tours with transportation which can be found via TripAdvisor. I wish I had read the other reviews because it wasn't explained in the event description that it was going to be an audio self guided tour and not with a tour guide. But the audio ended up being okay but not as engaging and kind of hard to follow / hear. The bus was also full as they combined several tours together "to save on gas" as Brian said but this means there are lots of stops and that a 2 hour tour ends up taking all day. I also felt rushed to get through each section and didn't feel like I really had time to sit with history and what we were learning. ALL OF THIS WOULD HAPPY BEEN FINE HAD I NOT BEEN LEFT BEHIND!!! Please see my attached screenshot. We were supposed to be back at the bus for noon, and I knew that so I told one of the front desk employees that I was going to the bathroom and that I'd be right back. I come out less than 10 minutes later and the bus and my whole group has left. I check my phone and I have no missed calls only a text from Brian, the bus driver, saying that he'll come back for me at 12:45 but that he has to continue the tour! I can not describe the sheer panic I felt when realizing that a tour company had left me behind. I was over an hour outside the city and all alone as a single woman traveling. I've been on many guided tours and this has never happened to me before. In fact even that very morning Brian waited on several guests at their hotels delaying the whole group but when I was in the bathroom for less than 10 minutes he left me without a call. Brian continued on with the tour and went to other stops meaning I missed out on lunch and those stops. He did eventually come back for me, AFTER 1PM and after I had called the main office for the tour company to explain what had happened. Never again will I book with this company. They had no regard for my safety when leaving me behind and THEY DIDN'T EVEN CALL!?!?! This whole situation left me baffled and so scared. Again the plantation in itself is certainly worth the visit but not with this tour company!! Read more Written March 14, 2024

Next is the swamp tour through Rajun Cajun tours which was a fun adventure! The airboat is loud but they give you earmuffs for that. There is a quick stop at Oak Alley Plantation for you to grab a bite to eat and a gift shop. Crescent City Tours made this tour very smooth! Got picked up in the morning at hotel by Brian (who is absolutely hilarious) and then he drove us to Whitney. Brian really made this experience even better than expected! Whitney Plantation was informative and moving- a must do. Stopped at Oak Valley Plantation cafe for really tasty lunch but was pleased we had chosen Whitney as our focus. On to the swamp tour- great fun- saw alligators, so many water birds, fish and a turtle. Informative guide. Arrived back at hotel 4.15- 8 hours after pick up. My only reservation about the day was that I chose this tour based on excellent reviews about Crescent City tours and Brian’s commentary- we had Raging Cajun transportation all day- prompt and organised but no commentary at all- not even a welcome onto the bus so people need to be aware that this might be the case. I called Crescent City Tours not once, but twice, to confirm my pickup location since I was unfamiliar with the city and didn't want to miss my ride. I spoke with Brian both times and he was so kind, patient, and informative. Little did I know this guy was going to be a hoot! He picked up right on time and even remembered my name. I've never seen someone so happy and comical at 8am! It was about a 50 min drive to the planation and he provided us with information about the city, as well as some personal (hilarious) stories! The plantation tour itself was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. I loved that it an audio, self guided tour so I could take my time. I'm not an emotional person but I was in tears at the end of this tour. If you do anything while visiting NOLA, do this tour. You will not regret it. I will be booking the swamp tour the next time I visit, and I hope I get to see Brian. This man is a gem and he made my trip so enjoyable!! Read more Written October 21, 2023

Went to Whitney plantation which focused on the slave experience. We've been to Auschwitz in Poland. This felt similar. A profound education and I'm glad my teens got to experience this. Go. After, we went to a restaurant/ café, gift shop, and on to the bayous and airboats. Amazing!! Breathtaking scenery and gators. We even got to feed them from the boat! Plan Your Tour

While the tour of homes is the main event, we offer several other tour features to enhance your time on tour.

Founded in 1729, Georgetown, South Carolina, is located in the heart of the South Carolina lowcountry. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the region became home to many indigo and rice planters who once exported so much rice that Georgetown County was once the wealthiest county in the United States. Though indigo and rice are no longer major exports for the region, many of the plantations, town houses, and gardens left by the planters remain and have been preserved by Georgetown's present-day residents. The Tour of Historic Homes and Plantations is self-guided and gives tour-goers a unique opportunity to tour properties, many of which are generally closed to the public, at their own leisure.

Bryan Bros, South Carolina natives tell unconventional story of Myrtle Beach Classic

Change Text Size

At this week's inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, George Bryan IV is making his second PGA TOUR start. Bryan IV and his brother Wesley Bryan, also competing this week, constitute the “Bryan Bros Golf” YouTube channel and are ambassadors of the Myrtle Beach golf community.

“It's just cool to be able to use our platform to be able to tell the story of the Myrtle Beach Classic,” said Bryan IV ahead of the event.

But what exactly is the story of the Myrtle Beach Classic?

For starters, it's an unconventional one.

Though Bryan IV led “The Q” up to the final hole, an errant approach shot in the water led to a bogey, and Atkins birdied to send it to a playoff, then made another birdie on the first playoff hole to seal the deal.

Referring to the qualifier, Bryan IV said, “It's never been a thing where YouTube has had an impact into a PGA TOUR event directly, and this is the first time it's ever happened … It was really freaking cool.”

It’s a story of second chances.

After “The Q,” Bryan IV was devastated – “I couldn't even go to the golf course and practice for a couple days because all I could think about was that 40-yard pitch shot out of the rough, downhill lie, and like, should I have laid up?” – but several weeks later, landed a spot in the event via a sponsor exemption.

In a video posted to the Bryan Bros YouTube channel, Bryan IV answers a phone call from Tournament Director Darren Nelson offering him the exemption. “Holy cow ... This is honestly a dream come true,” said Bryan IV. “Playing in a PGA TOUR event in my home state. ... let me catch my breath a little bit.”

No one knows about second chances better than Matt Atkins. After finding himself at a crossroads in November balancing family life with golf, he decided to enter The RSM Classic's Monday qualifier as a last resort, and he survived an eight-man playoff to earn one of four spots. Overcome with emotion, he said afterward: "I'll quit if I have to quit, because I'm not gonna sacrifice my family for golf, but I don't want to quit."

He then birdied the final three holes of The RSM Classic's second round to make the cut.

"I was down to no money," reflected Atkins. "A lot of prayers for clarity and discernment, and a lot of things got answered that week." The subsequent paycheck helped him continue his professional career, a path that led him to The Dunes Golf and Beach Club this week.

Matt Atkins emotionally qualifies for The RSM Classic

“When you're out here and you're playing and everything ... there's a lot of surface-level conversations,” continued Atkins. “There's maybe not as much depth in the conversations as there needs to be, so people don't really know what everyone is going through out here.

"It was cool to see some of the other players and caddies just kind of congratulate me on that week."

The place that sparked so many golf journeys gets its own event.

It's fitting that the PGA TOUR is anchoring in the "Golf Capital of the World" this week.

Just ask Trace Crowe, the 27-year-old Auburn University grad who was one of five players to earn their TOUR card at the 2023 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. Crowe grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, and bought his first set of clubs in Myrtle Beach at age 10.

Or ask Atkins. “I didn't grow up in South Carolina, but South Carolina is my home now," he said. "We vacationed here in Myrtle Beach, and this is where I would tell people, I just played golf on vacation.”

George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan have been playing golf in Myrtle Beach since age 6. They played the George Holliday Memorial Junior Tournament here every Thanksgiving.

“I was a 12-year-old that won the (George Holliday) overall title against like 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds,” said George. “It's my first-ever win. It's a cool thing because that was 24 years ago. I mean, to come full circle, to play in a PGA TOUR event in my home state ... which I just now thought about. It's really special.”

What's in George Bryan IV's bag plus stock yardages

A story of philia love.

The philia love – love between brothers or close friends – Atkins and each of the Bryan brothers have for each other is apparent.

George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan detailed how special it was to play their first PGA TOUR event together, which was George’s PGA TOUR debut, at the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Wesley and George Bryan on their expectations for Butterfield Bermuda

“I felt bad about how badly I was beating him in Bermuda at first,” joked George.

“They started chanting ‘Let’s catch Wes,'” Wesley said, and added that George was the only player he wants to beat this week: “I'm only checking George's score. Nobody else matters in the field.”

Atkins is an occasional friend of the Bryan Bros YouTube channel – although his friendship with the two got off to a rocky start. Atkins played with Wesley in a college event that Wesley has no recollection of. (“He was probably terrible," Wesley quipped.)

The two later played together in an eGolf Professional Tour event, and Wesley approached Atkins on the range at the Country Club of South Carolina the following week.

“Knowing him now, it's more funny because I know his personality,” said Atkins, “but he came up, and he was like, ‘Dude, I almost died yesterday.’ I was like, what? I played a practice round with him, but he came up to me like we were tight .... So that's kind of where our friendship kicked off.”

After getting married in 2017, Atkins moved to North Augusta, South Carolina, where Wesley lived, and the two frequently played golf together. “I didn’t get invited,” interjected George. The truth, Atkins clarified, was that George would film 1-on-1 matches for his YouTube channel, but not stay for group rounds.

“It was frustrating because I feel like I couldn't compete with you guys because y'all were pretty solid,” said George.

But as their friendship grew, so did Atkins’ encouragement towards George.

“The whole thing about Matt and a lot of the guys that we played with,” said George, “they've told me that even though my game was garbage in my eyes, ‘Dude, you're good enough to be on the PGA TOUR.’ Like what are you talking about? I just shot 74 … But he kept saying, ‘George, you're good enough to be on the PGA TOUR.' … They're part of the reason why I played as well as I did last year, got into (the Butterfield Bermuda Championship) and made the cut in the PGA TOUR event as a YouTuber guy.

“They helped instill confidence in me when I had zero confidence."

The favor was mutual, as George uplifted Atkins through his struggles in golf in 2023, saying: “Matt's a grinder. Like he believes in himself when he maybe on paper shouldn't. Getting through that Monday, making the cut and then going to this year, getting through some Mondays and playing like he has, it just shows you, you believe in yourself, how powerful the mind is and staying positive.”

Stephanie Royer is on staff at the PGA TOUR. She played college golf and is currently pursuing an MBA. A world traveler, she hopes to always keep her country count above her age and to hit every destination in the "National Treasure" movies.
