Dame Mary Berry Has a New Baking Show Coming Out

(Photo: Getty Images)  You may know Mary Berry from The Great British Bake Off as a judge from 2010-2016. Of course, she had a long and successful career prior to the competition show as a chef, writer, and TV presenter. And, here she is again, about to lead her own TV show for BBC Two, reports BBC Media Centre. There’s no name as of yet, but all of us can throw out some ideas. If it helps to provide some information on the show to come, we can get to naming it a bit later (in the comments section). BBC Media Centre has kindly released some details, writing: “The series will be guided by the nation’s much-loved cook as she shows us how to whip up her very best recipes - perfect to share at big gatherings, with small groups or even something special for two.” According to the description, the show will go beyond the kitchen: “Mary will travel to some of her favorite locations across the U.K. to meet others who come together over food, as part of family celebrations, to bring communities and generations together, and as the pinnacle of summer festivals and events." It’s not just the BBC who had some nice words to share, Berry released a statement, saying: “Sharing recipes is always an utter joy for me and this series is the ultimate guide, whether you are cooking for a crowd or just for two. I'm loving visiting some spectacular parts of the country at extraordinary events, gatherings and beautiful locations for this new series. I have always believed there is no better way to spend time with family and friends than over fresh home cooked food - and now more than ever that feels so important.” The series will be made up of six episodes, and you can look for Berry sharing multiple recipes, including a minted lamb casserole, tear and share bread, tin spiced chicken, and an avocado and ham toastie. Filming has begun but a release date has yet to come. In the meantime, let’s have a catch-up with Berry by turning to this roundup of fun facts. Circling back to the name of the show, do you have any suggestions!?

How To Watch The First 3 Seasons Of The Great British Baking Show

The first seasons of the great british baking show , with mary berry and paul hollywood at the helm, have been hiding in plain sight.

As America waits impatiently for the new season of The Great British Baking Show to premiere on Netflix, it’s likely that the most die hard fans have been watching previous seasons on repeat to fill the time. But, finding the earliest seasons starring Mary Berry has been quite a task….until now.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Great British Bake Off (@britishbakeoff)

As much as viewers love recent seasons of the show, there’s just something about those first few seasons that was different…special even. During Bake Off ‘s first season, the tent moved from week to week throughout the UK as bakers tackled various baking challenges set forth by the judges. The competitors were completely unaware of the baking fever they were about to set in motion.

America was first introduced to The Great British Bake Off (airing as The Great British Baking Show in the U.S.) in 2014.

It aired on PBS four years after it premiered in the U.K. But, when the Baking Show was removed from PBS, some of its earliest seasons seemed to disappear. Even YouTube clips have been removed without explanation.

Seasons 8 through 12 (listed as Collections 5-9) can be seen on Netflix. The eighth season of The Great British Baking Show marked the first without Mary Berry who left along with hosts Mel Geidroyc and Sue Perkins when Bake Off was moved from BBC to Channel 4. While Paul Hollywood’s new co-judge Prue Leith has endeared herself to the hearts of viewers as a compassionate and fair judge, longtime fans have longed to go back and watch the Mary Berry seasons.

Mary Berry fans have reason to rejoice!

After much research and heavy digging, it was discovered that the first 7 seasons of The Great British Bake Off are available on Roku! Roku is a free streaming app that can be dowloaded to any smart tv or mobile phone. For those counting down the days until September 16 when Season 13 of the Bake Off premieres on Netflix, go check out the old seasons. It will serve as a sweet reminder of why we all fell in love with The Great British Baking Show to begin with.

Mary Berry talks us through Mary Makes It Easy

How would you describe your new series Mary Makes It Easy ? Mary says: "It’s a collection of first courses, main courses and puddings, but they’re all very simple. So there aren’t too many ingredients, a lot of them are in one tray in the oven or one pot on top of the stove, and they’re recipes that your family will enjoy. We also have lots of tips on things like whether you can freeze meals or whether you can make them ahead."

Did you enjoy cooking alongside your celebrity guests? Mary says: "I love having somebody by my side when I’m cooking, and to have the celebrities was a real bonus because they all wanted to learn how to cook or to do something special for an occasion. I hope I gave them confidence and passed on a few tips!’

You and Mel Giedroyc know each other from Bake Off. What was it like working with her again? Mary says: "We’ve been friends for 20 years and for this series we went camping together, which was wonderful! She wanted a few ideas for meals that she could make on camping holidays. So we made some wonderful soup and did a lovely pasta dish. But she put up the tent, which I couldn’t have dreamt of doing!"

You also help Radio 1 DJ Jordan North learn some new skills… Mary reveals: "Normally when Jordan he has people round he does a so-called ‘picky tea.’ So a selection of bowls filled with things like olives, cubes of cheese and crisps – and that’s it! I was able to stretch his cooking vocabulary and he really appreciated it. We also made a delicious chocolate velvet cake, which he thought was wonderful – I think he’ll have a go at cooking it again!"

You had your work cut out with Anton du Beke, didn’t you? Mary reveals "Yes! He’s a very keen cook, but when I asked him what he likes to make he just said, ‘I cook eggs – boiled eggs, fried eggs, poached eggs and omelettes!’ So basically he wanted some new ideas for his family and he was very keen to learn. He’s quite a showman in the kitchen, I must say!’

Lorraine Kelly’s daughter Rosie enlisted your help as she normally cooks for her mum, but now she’s leaving home. Were you surprised Lorraine didn’t cook much? Mary says: "Lorraine has a very difficult time because she’s on television every single day and has little time for cooking. She was very grateful Rosie cooked at home, but now Rosie’s flying the nest. So I gave her some ideas and she was really keen to learn. She hasn’t cooked fish much, so I showed her how to do a fish dish and we also did a delicious stir-fry.’

How did you help AJ Odudu with her cooking dilemma? Mary says: "AJ loves healthy food, particularly vegetables, so I showed her how to do a courgetti. It’s basically a stir-fry and it makes a very light lunch. With a potato peeler that has an attachment you simply pull down a courgette and it goes into a lovely shred-like spaghetti and then you add all sorts of other veg. It’s delicious!"

You don’t just cook with Michael Ball, but you sing with him, too. What was that like ? Mary explains: "We actually did our cooking in the theatre. I also had a little sing-a-long with him and gosh, his voice is so memorable. It was a privilege! I hope the series inspires people to get going and do some home cooking from scratch!’

The Actual Reason Why Mary Berry Decided to Leave 'The Great British Baking Show'

Things got complicated for the chef in 2016.

Headshot of Kayla Keegan

As longtime viewers of the program already know, Mary and Paul were the original judges when the show first launched on the British network BBC Two back in 2010. Mary, who became iconic for her hatred of baked goods with "soggy bottoms," was front and center on Bake Off until 2016 — it was then that the show announced it would be moving to Channel 4. Much to everyone's surprise, Mary decided to walk away from her gig, along with then-presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins .

Why did Mary Berry leave The Great British Baking Show ?

why did mary berry leave 'the great british baking show' what happened to mary berry on 'bake off'

According to Mary herself, she walked away from the tent of bakers out of "loyalty" to the BBC. "It was the BBC’s program, it grew there," she told RadioTimes.com . "So I decided to stay with the BBC, with Mel and Sue."

What's more, it sounds like Mary wasn't formally asked to continue on Bake Off when the series moved from BBC to Channel 4.

"Well, I avoided being asked. It was suggested what would happen if I did go to Channel 4; what I would get, the advantages. But I didn’t ever have a meeting with them," she revealed. "I’d made up my mind. To me it’s an honor to be on the BBC. I was brought up on it."

Of course, Mary had no problem finding other ways to keep busy after departing The Great British Baking Show . She went on to appear in several British TV shows, including Loose Women , Strictly Come Dancing , and This Morning . She also got to host her very own mini-series, Classic Mary Berry , and the TV series Mary Berry's Quick Cooking . What's even cooler, she's becoming a dame in Britain after appearing on the Queen's birthday honors list.

In short, Mary is still thriving even after saying goodbye to all those soggy bottoms four years ago.

Who are the guest stars on Mary Berry's Ultimate Christmas?

  • Chef Monica Galetti
  • Chef Angela Hartnett
  • TV presenter Rylan Clark

BBC viewers will see the return of chef Monica Galetti - previously a host and judge on British Masterchef: The Professionals . The Samoan-born New Zealand chef is currently the chef proprietor of Mere in London and was previously senior sous-chef at Le Gavroche in London.

Galetti isn't the only chef joining Mary for the Christmas special. Enter chef Angela Hartnett, chef proprietor of the Italian Michelin-starred Murano in Mayfair, London. One of Gordan Ramsay's protegee's, she was formerly head chef at the prestigious at The Connaught .

Angela, whose grandmother is Italian, shows viewers how to rustle up a delicious pumpkin ricotta tortelli. Meanwhile Monica Galetti showcases a tempting Samoan palusami with smoked haddock, cavolo nero and sourdough.

Strictly It Takes Two host Rylan Clark is the third and final guest at Mary Berry's Ultimate Christmas , and it seems the TV presenter is there for a very important reason. The veteran chef is hoping to win the anti-Brussel Sprouts man over with her special recipe.

"I said I wanted to change his mind so I took him into a sprout field and as viewers will see he was quite bewildered at the field of sprouts and how to gather them but he got the hang of it in the end," Mary recalls.

"Then I decided that if I put the sprouts with other things, he would love them. I put on lots of butter, cashew nuts and peas. Everybody likes peas, children love petit pois. They were masked in butter, not overcooked — they were beautiful and he loved them. And then to put it to the test, we gave the recipe to some children and there was only one child that didn’t eat it. You could actually see the children finishing off their bowls of sprouts!"

Where to watch Mary Berry's Ultimate Christmas

UK viewers can watch Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas on BBC One at 8pm on Monday 19 December . It will be available on BBCiPlayer shortly after and repeated on BBC One at 11.25am on Christmas Eve.

Mary Berry's Ultimate Christmas will air the same date in the US on PBS. US viewers should tune in at 9pm ET to see the beloved British cook in action.

'Mary Berry Makes It Easy' Will Be A 'Baking Show' Reunion

When Mary Berry left The Great British Baking Show after Season 7, she refused to head to Channel 4 along with the series due to her longstanding relationship with the BBC. She's been doing stand-and-stir presentations on British television since the 1970s as the resident cook on Afternoon Plus with Judith Chalmers . She has been on the air hosting her own shows, including Mary Berry at Home, Mary Berry's Cooking the Books, Mary Berry Cooks , and Mary Berry's Absolute Favorites , to name a few.

Her latest series, Mary Berry Makes It Easy , brings the octogenarian back to television for another six-episode round of recipes based on her latest cookbook, which, naturally, is of the same name. The series aired on BBC Two in November 2023 to rave reviews in the U.K., as Berry's series usually do, followed by her holiday special, Mary Berry's Highland Christmas , which aired and streamed on PBS Passport over here during the 2023 holidays. PBS will follow Highland Christmas with Makes it Easy as part of the February 2024 lineup.

Mary Berry Makes It Easy will stream on PBS Passport for members as a binge and air on local PBS stations as a weekly series. For fans of The Great British Baking Show , the series will be an extra treat, not just as a counter to the overly-heavy Paul Hollywood version of the show that is now on Netflix or as a new weekly dose of Berry, but because the new series includes a GBBO reunion of sorts.

Here's the synopsis:

Mary Berry is going to ‘make it easy’ over six delicious episodes, as she comes to the aid of some well-known and much-loved friends – both old and new – who are each struggling with a different cooking dilemma. Mary shows them – and the viewers – just how easy preparing mouth-watering food can be with her brilliant, easy-to-follow new recipes. Mary Makes iIt Easy is Mary Berry at her heart-warming best: just simple cooking and a beautifully produced series.

Berry will be joined by different celebrities in each episode, with her former co-star on The Great British Baking Show , Mel Giedroyc, as one of the highlights of the six-episode series. Others include TV presenters and British celebrities like AJ Odudu ( The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice ), Jordan North ( Double Trouble ), Michael Ball ( Les Misérables ), Anton Du Beke ( Strictly Come Dancing ), Lorraine Kelly ( Lorraine ), and Rosie Kelly Smith ( The Cube ).

Mary Berry Makes It Easy will premiere on PBS Passport with all six episodes on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
