US Air Force airlifts cruise ship passenger, critically ill son in Atlantic Ocean in dramatic 8-hour rescue mission

M embers of the US Air Force rescued a mother and her sick child onboard a Carnival cruise ship hundreds of miles out in the open Atlantic Ocean last Saturday.

The dramatic rescue unfolded onboard the Carnival Venezia, which was secluded about 400 miles off the US mainland, according to a news release from the 920th Rescue Wing.

Two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen from Patrick Space Force Base in Florida sprung into action and were in the air “within hours of the call” for help.

Flying onboard two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and two HC-130J Combat King 11 took the service members 8 hours to pull off the rescue.

It required three helicopter air-to-air refuelings to “extended mission duration” given the “dynamic situations” since the ship was so far out at sea.

Upon arrival at the ship’s location, rescuers on one of the HH-60s needed to send down a hoist to retrieve the mother and her child from the ship.

Photos of the daring rescue show the unidentified woman and her son being hoisted up into the helicopter from the ship’s deck.

The child and his mother were safely taken into the helicopter, and he received medical attention while en route back to the mainland.

The cause of the medical emergency was not immediately clear, but officials said the “patient was successfully transferred to a hospital in the United States.”

“Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed,” said Capt. Dylan Gann, a pilot with the 301st Rescue Squadron.

“By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams. Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need.”

The helicopters traveled 1,200 miles in the air to pull off the heroic rescue.

The Venezia was returning to New York City after various stops in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

After the medical airlift, the ship continued its voyage to New York and ported on Monday.

The fearless rescue comes less than two months after the US Coast Guard  airlifted a woman suffering medical complications on board a Disney cruise ship  located about 180 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean.

Footage posted by the US Coast Guard shows a rescuer being lowered onto the Disney Fantasy and then being raised by an MH-60T Jayhawk chopper to be flown to a hospital on April 15.

Exclusive: Mom speaks out after Air Force rescued son from cruise ship

The ship was more than 350 nautical miles off the coast of North Carolina.

A mother from Massachusetts spoke exclusively to ABC News after her 12-year-old son was part of a high-stakes cruise ship rescue by the Air Force, hundreds of miles off shore.

Angela Bridges was aboard the Carnival Venezia cruise ship with her family, including son Aiden, en route to New York City from the Caribbean when he fell seriously ill, concerning the medical team on board.

PHOTO: Air Force rescues a sick passenger from aboard the Carnival Venezia cruise ship.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Bridges recalled the moment health professionals said, "'We're going to do an x-ray,'" and told her, "'it looks as though he has a perforation in his bowel -- the next thing that we need to do immediately is get him off the ship."

At the time of the critical medical incident, the ship was outside of North Carolina and more than 350 nautical miles off the coast.

The 920th Rescue Wing of the Air Force, consisting of two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen, flew to the ship’s position to safely extract the patient for transport to the nearest capable medical center.

"We were standing there watching the whole time, and I, just, you know, screaming and crying over the helicopter blades," Bridges recalled. "It was very scary."

PHOTO: Angela Bridges spoke exclusively to ABC News about how her son was rescued by Air Force at sea while aboard the Carnival Venezia.

"The amazing thing about this rescue is is actually how smooth it went. We went from zero notification to having aircraft ready to having aircraft in the air. And the young man in the hospital in in just a manner of hours," Lt. Col. Dave Underwood told ABC News.

Other cruise-goers watched on as the rescue workers lowered down, and grabbed the boy in critical condition, followed by his mom.

"After that the whole ship like cheered and was screaming and yelling 'yay'," passenger Katie Reed who took video of the moment, told ABC News. "It was really cool to witness and see like you know that this kid got a better chance at life because of like that team was phenomenal."

Aiden is currently recovering at a North Carolina hospital.

"I feel so much gratitude, gratefulness toward all the people who have been integral to my son's recovery," Bridges said. "It's not just the Coast Guard or the Air Force, or the doctors or the nurses. It's all of those people."

"Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore. The ship then resumed its route to New York, arriving as scheduled Monday morning," Carnival said in a statement to ABC News.

Cool Cruiser

I've been on several cruises with hubby but this time I'm booked with my daughter and granddaughter (turning 5 during cruise)  we're excited for family time and also adult time! Granddaughter will love kids club but I'm not finding info on the "nominal fee" for night owls.  Anyone with experience cruising with littles???  Would love your input!!!

I'm taking my 10 YO grandson on his first cruise and he's fighting us on going to Camp... unlike your granddaughter he thinks he's 'too old' for it! The advice I've gotten here, which could apply to your granddaughter at 5 if she's prone to making strange in new circumstances, is to enroll her in camp regardless, and to make sure she goes to the welcome party they host the first night... that is the time that most kids make friends they say...

(I'm bribing my grandson- the terms of being able to cruise is he WILL register for Camp and WILL attend the first night party- if he chooses not to participate in any other activities, then that's his choice!)

Since this is the first time I've cruised with kids, I can't help you with the Night Owl prices...

Palmetto Pilot

Palmetto Pilot

We took our 3 year old on the Magic last year. It was his first cruise, he fought us tooth and nail going to the kids club but after he went he had a great time. I believe it was around $8 an hour after 10pm. Incredibly reasonable for us!

JaxsMama

Night owls is either hourly (cant exactly remember but something like $6.75 an hour plus 18% grat) or it's a set price for the night when they have a theme party with gifts to take. My son loves it. Register online before you go and then go on the first day (a time range will be in funtimes) to look around and get the schedule. Boarding day it opens at 10 PM for pay, no free day one.  Also at that age there is no welcome party/mix and mingle as referred to in above post...that is for the older kids.

DukeASUGirl

She'll love Camp Ocean! I cruised with an almost 7-yr-old and an almost 9-yr-old. Next time we cruise, they'll be in different clubs, and they're actually pretty sad about that. But they loved the activities and loved meeting new friends.

Then again, they both do Kids Club after school (aftercare) and day camps all summer so my husband and I can work, so this is normal for them. We didn't keep them in it all day -- just when there was a fun activity they wanted to do and when we needed some alone time.

Ahhh- thanks for the correction JaxMama- is the party for the 10 and up age?

Thanks so much for the replies!  My granddaughter is very social and thrives on structure so I think she will want to go to camp ocean a lot.  I seem to remember on previous cruises when I didnt have a little that the kids club staff were on the Lido deck when we embarked getting kids fired up and registering them etc.  Do they still do that?

I'm not sure what age that starts.  I've only done penguins age 2-5  and stingrays 6-8.  I don't even want to think about my kid being old enough to sign himself out or teenage years lol.

LOL! My daughter has already said that there's no way my 10 YO grandson is signing himself out! He'd get lost and end up on the bridge telling the captain how to run the ship!!!

As for the teenage years, I shudder to think about it- my daughter was bad enough!

Night Owls is $8.00 an hour or for special parties a flat fee.

Our granddaughter couldn't wait to be able to sign herself out and was only allowed to do so to participate in the scavenger hunt.  The group she went with on the scavenger hunt decided to go off track so she knew she would be in trouble and she decided to go back to camp.  She got lost trying to find it and sat by an elevator crying until a nice couple helped her find her way back to camp.  Her first and only time she signed herself out in two years of being old enough to do so.

So I have not done Carnival in years with kids but there used to be a big get together the first night where all the kids got to know each other and make friends. Are you saying that does not exist anymore? I am sailing with 2 grandkids and I assumed it was the same as in the past and on Royal and NCL currently. The kids are 3.5 and 10.

It sounds like the party would apply only to the 10 YO, not the 3.5 YO...

As far as the small kids go (2-8) your first chance to drop them off that first night is at 10pm when night owls (fee) begins. I dont know about the older age groups. I've heard they have a meet up for older kids the first night but I cant say for sure bc my kid isn't that old yet.

I have just never heard of not having a get together on the first night for all ages. And I have cruised a lot, with a lot of kids 😄

Thanks, thats odd. There used to be like a 2 hour get to know each other session for at least the school age. Never cruised with my kids when they were toddlers  but makes 3rd with this wild boy.

From my last cruise. Open specific times for registration and then camp opens at 10pm.

20190324_173714.jpg

@JaxsMama  thanks . So are there different pages for different age groups? Or is that 0-11? I haven't actually looked much at the kids camp yet. I have a cruise before this one on Harmony and all my focus has been on that. But July will be here soon so I am making plans now.

What are the age cuts? And at night are all the little kids together?

Camp ocean has penguins 2-5 on one side and stingrays 6-8 and sharks 9-11 on the other. The schedules are available outside camp ocean and they have one for each age group. At night during night owls all kids are on the older side. Then on the younger side they usually have the kids that fell asleep. The older kids have separate venues...circle c 12-14 and club o2 15-17.

When I traveled with my kids we would put clothes together, shirt, pants, underwear etc., in a bundle and it was ready just to grab and put on. No need to look for something that matched as it was already done.

We cruised when our grandson was 5....We went with our son and his GF . Our Grandson didn't show much interest in the kids program (we didn't force him) and usually stayed with us and played in the water park area (we cruised on the Breeze). In the evening he would watch the movie on Lido deck with his dad and /or retired early with my wife (who is not a night owl). This worked out perfectly as it allowed my son and his GF to enjoy the nightlife each evening . However...if young and old like the night life...fingers crossed your granddaughter takes to the evening program and night owl offering!!

My granddaughter will ONLY wear dresses for about the past year, so that's easy when it's warm!  Not so much when it's winter and we have to deal with tights or leggings under those dresses :-)

I'm hoping she will like the kid's club, and I think she will.  This is a Premier cruise for my daughter and I so it sounds like my daughter may miss out on the cocktail reception on the first night, and maybe some of the drawings in the casino.  I'll have to compare the Premier schedule and the Kids Club schedule once we get onboard.  We will have to plan out our "family time" and our "adult time" lol.

Norwegian cruise ship employee arrested after stabbing 3 passengers with scissors on alaskan voyage.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The FBI has arrested a  Norwegian cruise ship worker  in Alaska after he allegedly stabbed three people with medical scissors while onboard, reports say.

The suspect, identified as Ntando Sogoni from South Africa, was recently hired by Norwegian and boarded its Encore cruise ship in Seattle on Sunday, the Juneau Empire newspaper reports, citing an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy.

The ship left that day for a weeklong, round-trip excursion to Alaska with stops including Glacier Bay National Park and Victoria, British Columbia.

“According to court documents, on May 6, 2024, Ntando Sogoni, 35, was working on the cruise ship when other ship employees observed the defendant attempting to deploy a lifeboat,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska said in a statement.

“Sogoni was contacted by ship security and escorted to the ship’s medical center for an assessment.

The cruise ship worker allegedly stabbed three people with medical scissors while on board.

“Upon arrival, Sogoni physically attacked a security guard and a male nurse inside an examination room and proceeded to enter another examination room where a woman, who is a U.S. citizen, was being examined,” the statement continued.

“He grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman multiple times in the arm, hand and face. He also stabbed two security guards who intervened — one in the head and one in the back and shoulders.”

Sogoni, who officials say was detained in the ship’s jail, was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday in Juneau, Alaska.

He is now facing a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.

If convicted, he faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

The suspect has been identified as Ntando Sogoni from South Africa.

Norwegian did not immediately respond to a request for comment from FOX Business.

The alleged stabbing happened as the ship was passing west of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, on the way to Alaska, The Associated Press reports.

family packing for cruise

If you’re going on a cruise with kids, you’ll want to plan and pack for sea days , days in port and evenings on the cruise ship.

Most cruise lines are casual during the day and have a dress code in the evening in the main dining room and nicer restaurants. Resort casual attire is perfect for most nights.

Some cruise lines have a formal or dressy night , where passengers will dress up a little bit more. However for children, dress codes are pretty relaxed.

Kid’s Cruise Essentials

family cruise on beach

Although there are a lot of activities for kids on a cruise , it’s a good idea to bring a few small toys to keep your child busy in the cabin or even on the airplane.

You won’t have room for a lot. However, consider allowing each child to pack a small backpack with some toys, books and markers to keep them occupied.

If you’re going on a Caribbean, Bermuda or other warm weather cruise, sand toys are a great item to pack for beach days and shore excursions.

These collapsible sand toys take up less room and are easier to pack for your family cruise.

Recommended: Collapsible sand toys (check price & 4.5 Amazon reviews here)

It’s a good idea to bring mesh beach bags to carry sand toys and other items between the cruise ship and beach.

Recommended: Mesh bags for sand toys (check price & amazon reviews here)

2. Water Shoes

For the lido deck and pool, beach or shore excursions, water shoes are a necessary cruise essential for children.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Water shoes (great for kids of all ages)

If you’re visiting the Caribbean islands, Hawaii or Bermuda, you can expect sunny and warm weather. If you have young kids, bringing a sun hat with UV protection is a great idea. A baseball cap for older children and teens is great too.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Sun hat with UV protection (see different cols on Amazon)

4. Closed Toe Shoes

A standard pair of sneakers is perfect for a cruise. Remember that your child will need closed toe shoes to participate in some of the cruise ship activities and sports (don’t forget socks!).

5. Swim Goggles

kid on a cruise

Since the oceans and pools on the cruise ship are salt water, it’s important to pack a pair or two of swim goggles . Goggles don’t take up much room in your luggage, but will be used a lot throughout your cruise vacation.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Swim goggles (check price, style options & size on Amazon here)

6. Children’s Medication

Remember to pack pain reliever and fever reducing medication, as well as any other children’s medication you may use in your household.

Something to note is that cruise ships will have a limited supply of over the counter medications and first aid products , so be sure to pack what you may need.

7. Band-Aids

Consider packing a mini first aid kit with band-aids and antibiotic ointment to take care of any small cuts and scratches.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Travel first aid kit (see 3000+ 4.5* amazon reviews here)

9. Umbrella Stroller

Having a lightweight stroller both on the cruise ship and in ports will be a lifesaver (even if your child doesn’t usually use a stroller anymore).

An umbrella stroller is the easiest to pack and bring on a cruise – and is affordable.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Umbrella stroller (compact & lightweight – see price & over 10,000 amazon reviews here)

11. Children’s Sunscreen

On your family vacation, you will be spending a lot of time under the sun. Getting some children’s sunscreen is a great way to protect your kids from getting sunburned.

If your children like spending time in the pool or ocean, getting a reef safe, water resistant sunscreen is a great idea.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Reef friendly sunscreen

12. Children’s Insect Repellant

Picking up some children’s insect repellant is a good idea. Although there aren’t insects on the cruise, there may be mosquitos in some cruise ports (research before you go).

13. Packaged Snacks (Optional)

Although there are plenty of included food options onboard your cruise, bringing packaged snacks on a cruise can be practical.

Whether if it’s because your child is hungry after dinner or needs a small snack in a port of call, packaged snacks like granola bars can be handy.

Please note that you ports restrict the food you’re allowed to take off the cruise ship (usually fruit, vegetables and meats). Always check the rules before bringing anything off the ship.

Packing a lightweight thermometer in your mini first-aid kit is a good idea in case your children feels under the weather.

15. Plastic Baggies

Whether if it’s for bringing toys, snacks or miscellaneous items, ziploc style plastic baggies will be useful during your family cruise. Always pack a few resealable bags, as you never know when they’ll come in handy.

16. Small Inflatable Pool / bathtub (optional)

A genius cruise cabin hack for parents is to pack small inflatable pool or bath when cruising with babies or toddlers. These can placed at the bottom of the shower stall in your stateroom bathroom, since most do not have bathtubs.

Recommended: Small inflatable pool bathtub (check price & 2000+ reviews on Amazon)

Babies & Toddlers Cruise Essentials

If you’re cruising with babies or toddlers, here are some things to add to add to your cruise packing list (as needed):

  • Diapers / pull-ups / swim diapers
  • Diaper creme
  • Baby food / formula (if needed)
  • Sippy cups / bottles
  • Blanket or favorite stuffed animal (optional)
  • Car seat for travel (optional)
  • Baby carrier (optional)
  • Children’s books

Must Have Items to Pack for Families

family cruise mother and daughter

1. Packing Cubes

Having packing cubes for each family member is a great idea. Using packing cubes to strategically pack your clothing will help kee the whole family organized.

Packing cubes are a must have cruise essential items that are loved by all cruisers.

Recommended: Packing cubes (best seller – check price & see over 18,000 Amazon reviews here)

2. Sunscreen

Make sure to pack enough sunscreen for the duration of your trip. Reef safe sunscreen is preferred for Caribbean and Bahamas cruises.

3. Refillable Water Bottles

Packing some reusable water bottles for your family vacation is a great idea. This way, you can bring water off of the cruise ship and you won’t have to purchase water bottles when you are onboard the ship.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Refillable water bottles (collapsible to save space)

4. Motion Sensor Night Light

A battery powered motion sensor night light is a cruise cabin essential that is perfect for families. In the evening time, if the lights are off in your cabin, your stateroom will get very dark (especially an inside cabin).

If you or one of your family members gets up in the middle of the night, a night light will come in handy.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Motion sensor nightlight (check price & 1400+ Amazon reviews here)

5. Magnetic Hooks

A cool thing that new cruisers don’t know about cruises, is that the cruise cabin walls are usually metal. Magnet hooks can be used to add extra storage, making the most out of a small cruise ship cabin.

Using magnetic hooks is a real space saver and they’re super useful. You can hang up your cruise lanyards, sunhats or wet bathing suits on the magnetic hooks.

cruise passenger kisses 5 year old

Recommended: Magnet hooks (note, the higher the weight, the more hold you will get)

6. Power Bar (Non-Surge Protected)

Most cruise ship cabins will only have one or two outlets, and may not have any USB outlets (unless the cruise ship is new). Many cruisers like to pack a non-surge protected power bar .

Please note that surge protected power bars (ones like at home) are prohibited on cruise ships and they are likely to be confiscated. Only bring non-surge protected approved power strips on a cruise.

Recommended: Cruise ship power bar non-surge protected (this one has 9000+ 5* Amazon reviews)

7. Luggage Tag Holders
