Honda CRV: How to Set Cruise Control

Cruise control is a cool way to put your Honda CRV on autopilot so to speak. In this setting, the vehicle can maintain speeds of 25mph or more without having to press the accelerator. However, it will not set at below 25mph. In addition, the feature disconnects when the brake is applied. Albeit this is a wonderful feature, be aware that cruise control can be dangerous on winding roads, in traffic, and on wet slippery or icy roads. With that being said, here are the uncomplicated steps to follow to set your Cruise Control.

Enable Cruise Control:

  • When your vehicle speed has reached 25mph or faster, press the MAIN button located on the RIGHT side of the steering wheel.
  • An ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) icon will appear in the dash screen to notify you that the system is ready for you to use.
  • Once you have reached the speed you want to set, press the -SET button.
  • To INCREASE the speed press the RES+ button.
  • To DECREASE the speed press the -SET.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

3 Options To Cancel Cruise Control:

  • Press the CANCEL button in the MIDDLE of the steering wheel.
  • Press the MAIN button.
  • Press the BRAKE pedal.

*Pressing the DISTANCE button located to the RIGHT of the cancel button will RE-ENGAGE your previous cruise control settings.

  • Main (On/Off) – Press to turn the system ON/OFF; Be sure the system is OFF when not using it, as if RES/+ or -SET is active, you could accidentally hit either, which will cause your vehicle to enter cruise control mode
  • SET/− (Set/Coast) – Used to set or decrease your desired speed
  • RES/+ – To maintain the desired speed or to accelerate the set speed. To increase the speed press this button. Each press will increase the speed at 1 mph faster.

**NOTE: If you are unable to activate this feature on the first try, REPEAT the steps. If you are still unsuccessful, contact the dealership for assistance or consult your vehicle user’s manual.

Mastering the Honda CR-V Cruise Control: A Comprehensive Guide

Are you curious about the adaptive cruise control feature in the 2023 Honda CRV? Let’s dive into how it works and how you can make the most of it.

Located on the right side of the steering wheel, there are three buttons that are key to utilizing this feature effectively. The first button activates the cruise control, the second button adjusts the following distance, and the third button enables the lane departure system.

Once activated, you can set the cruise control to maintain your desired speed, up to 90 miles per hour. If you approach a slower vehicle, the adaptive cruise control will automatically adjust your speed to match the car ahead. When you signal to change lanes, the system will accelerate back to your set speed once you’ve passed the vehicle.

Furthermore, the lane departure system provides additional safety by alerting you if your vehicle drifts out of its lane and gently guides it back to the center.

If you have any further questions about these features in the 2023 CRV, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to ensure you have a thorough understanding of the advanced technologies in your vehicle.

How to Use Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow—7” Driver Information Interface Models

Cruising on the open highway has never been easier honda's adaptive cruise control (acc) with low-speed follow lets you set your cruise speed and interval behind a vehicle detected ahead, and then maintains that interval by braking your vehicle or applying the throttle. and the low-speed follow function can bring the vehicle to a complete stop when a vehicle detected ahead slows to a stop, and it lets you resume operation by pressing a button or the accelerator. check out this video for all the details. acc cannot detect all objects ahead and may not detect a given object; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed and other factors. acc should not be used in heavy traffic, poor weather or on winding roads. acc only includes a limited braking function. driver remains responsible for slowing or stopping the vehicle to avoid a collision., how to pair and use mobile phones with bluetooth® handsfreelink®—9" color touch-screen models, how to use basic audio controls—9" color touch-screen models, how to connect and use apple carplay—9" color touch-screen models, how to connect and use android auto—9" color touch-screen models, how to use the collision mitigation braking system (cmbs)—9” color touch-screen models, how to use the lane keeping assist system (lkas)—7” driver information interface models, how to use the road departure mitigation system (rdm)—9" color touch-screen models, how to use the remote power window control-9" color touch-screen models, how to use the headlight switch, how to use the rear seat reminder-9" color touch-screen models, how to use the rear seat belt reminder, how to reset the tire pressure indicator—9" color touch-screen models.

How to use just the Cruise Control

  • Add to quote

I have never used the cruise control on my 2020 ex-l crv since I bought it, just never had the need. Recently I decided to give it a try and I'm ashamed to admit it but I couldn't get it to work. I didn't want the ACC just the normal cruise control. Is there a way to use the normal cruise control without involving the ACC. I've read the manual a dozen times and I still can't get it to work, so I must be not be doing it right. Thank you.

Give the ACC a try, you might surprise yourself. I love it and have never used the regular CC.

Maybe I will but I'd still like to be able to fall back on the normal cruise control if I need to. I should just go to the dealer but it's a long way to go in busy traffic so I have been putting it off.

cruise control honda cr v

Have you considered swinging by your dealer and getting them to demonstrate it? Far better than folks typing out "how" when dealerships can "show"....

Or Google it

cruise control honda cr v

I don't think it is possible to use it as a normal CC (mind you I could be wrong) I rarely use mine but when I do it works really well

Thanks Grpass, I took your advice and googled it and found a video that explained it perfectly. All I needed to do was to press 2 buttons and I'm back to using regular CC. Can't wait until tomorrow to try it out. Thanks fellas for all of the good suggestions.

which 2 buttons

Here is the video I found that explains it better than I could

Jeeze.....glad they didn't put that on older models....I would never figure it out. Actually I couldn't even figure out WTH y'all were even talking about til I watched the video. It's a conspiracy I tell ya- they're just trying to keep old folks off the road.

I'm a fan of Adaptive cruise control in the CRV. I don't think I will ever touch the regular CC ever again. The low speed follow is the icing on the cake. But, even then there are cases in which it gets confused (mainly due to external factors). So you can take help from all these safety/convenience systems, but better be ready to do the manual override all the time. One system I wish was defaulted to On from start is 'Brake Hold'. Can't think of a situation where one would not use that function.

AAC is very good. For the new user, just be prepared to hit the Cancel button as road conditions change. By that I mean, read the road and where possible Cancel the AAC and take back control or as already said, Honda sensing can and will apply the cars brakes. Had it a few times happen and now know when to switch off or not use. All In all it works well.

@Jbobber I see that you are new here, so welcome! For the benefit of all who visit the site, we do run a tight ship....With that said... This is a discussion about how to use the CR-V Cruise Control, not about Google. Let's continue the discussion about cruise control. Thank you!

Snow or heavy rain will disable most of the advanced safety systems, which includes AAC cruise control. When this happens, I toggle to "dumb" cruise control until the safety systems are active again.

Now that is a good idea. It never occurred to me to use standard CC when ACC won't work. I probably wouldn't be able to remember to press and hold one second while on the road anyway. Would switching to standard CC get rid of the annoying messages that come on when snow covers the radar?

cruise control honda cr v

Turn on the cruise control and while it is on, press the cruise control button at the 3 oclock position and hold it for like 3 seconds. That switches it into traditional cruise control and back. Give the ACC a try and you won't go back to regular cruise control, I drive like 75% of the time in ACC, even in stop and go traffic.

Definitely check with a Honda dealer or a good YouTube video for pointers on how to use ACC. I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s a real fatigue fighter on not just long drives but also stop and go urban traffic. I use it all the time. My CRV is a 2018 Touring model. My only minor anxiety relates to what someone following behind me sees as far as my vehicle’s brake-lights are concerned. (Can another forum reader who knows enlighten us?) When ACC slows and/or stops my vehicle, does someone following me see the same type of “brake light behavior” as would be the case if I was controlling my vehicle’s progress in traffic?

The ACC is a safety application. What happens if you have it turned off and rear-end somebody and cause injuries? An insurance investigator could easily figure out the ACC was disabled and create all kinds of issues. Frankly I'm surprised Honda allows it ti be shut off.

I think your assessment is flawed. ACC is an option available on some cars, not all, usage is totally at the drivers discretion. There are driving conditions that could make ACC more hazardous to use than regular CC, or no cruise at all. However, if your rear end another car under any circumstances, you are generally going to be found at fault.

cruise control honda cr v

I’m not a fan of the ACC. Someone drives in front of me and car slams on the break. Note you all are going to say it suppose to do that, safety. Well it doesn’t do that in my Toyota. I can have some one drive in front of me and it will gradually slow down while keeping distance. I trust this system more then my Honda. Feel like I’m going to get rear ended one of these days.

If you did get rear-ended, the blame is on the idiot driving too close to you from behind. Leaving a sensible gap is not something every driver does and we're all guilty of it.

ACC is the best. Drove from MD to TX with a trailer and the ACC just made drive easy. I set it to 3Bars with speed of 80mph. I was not as stressed as I think it would have been if there was no ACC. Would definitely recommend it.

Please try using ACC. They are wonderful and safe and works really well. Try it and you will be surprised. With ACC your CR-V will do most of the work. You need to be alert at all times. I am and it has never made a mistake yet. Only time I have noticed it didn't response quickly is in heavy traffic when someone cuts in your lane with small distance between your car and the one in front of you. Use the ACC feature. It's a life saver. It works and you have paid for the technology to make your life easier. Enjoy!!!

I accidentially disabled the ACC -- and couldn't wait to get it back. you might want to try both ways...

Thank you for asking this question. I didn't think ACC could be disabled and it doesn't work sometimes when there is snow on the car.

  • Unlock the door with a key (if the key is inside, a ruler will do as well)
  • Open the door by pulling the handle
  • enter and close door.
  • Lower the window (no AC anyway)
  • Adjust the seat and mirrors manually
  • Put the seat belt
  • Put the key into the steering slot
  • Rock the steering and turn the key once to disable steering lock
  • Turn the key second time to get into accessory mode
  • Pull the choke
  • Press the clutch
  • Move the manual gear lever to neutral
  • Crank the starter motor
  • Not starting, forgot to pray..
  • Give a bit more gas pedal input
  • Crank again. (Assuming it started)
  • Give it a healthy amount to accelerator input till the engine stabilizes
  • Release the choke (leave it on if you want to drive in boost mode idiot)
  • Slot in to first gear (this car can start in any of the 4 gears it has)
  • Slip the clutch and give some more gas input
  • Vehicle stalled.. oh forgot the hand brake. Release it by a. Pull up a lever a little, b. pushing a button on the lever, c. Release the lever all the way down.
  • If you can't find that button, it means the lever cover is loose and covered the button, push it back.
  • Repeat steps from 8 to 19
  • Finally it gets going..
  • Unlock the door while opening it with the key in your pocket
  • Close the door
  • Press the brake pedal
  • Push start button
  • Press gas to get going.

cruise control honda cr v

That brings me to a question: (Mods feel free to move this if it is too off topic.) Does regular use of the brake hold feature reduce the life of the brake linings?

I doubt it, as they only wear when there is movement causing friction. The brake hold only takes hold when the vehicle is stationary. Another question: regarding cruise control use with Brake Hold. If brake hold is active (car stopped), and one presses RESUME, will the car go, or is a press on the accelerator needed?

I am completely aware of the dangers of using cruise control on slippery surfaces, etc. The Honda cruise control works in tandem with the traction control system. If any wheel spins, even briefly, the cruise control will immediately disengage and a message will appear on the dash display. Often, the cruise control will disengage faster than I can respond.

cruise control honda cr v

I was not aware of that feature. Thanks! I will still be very careful with the CC and because of issues with my right foot and leg, I need CC as much as possible.

No, messages will still remain until weather conditions improve.

2023 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Interior Review: Clean, classy, quality

You'll appreciate it every day.

cruise control honda cr v

We're at a fairly experimental time when it comes to car design , particularly with interiors. All kinds of displays and buttons and arrangements are being tried, all in an effort to stand out. And while it's great from a style standpoint, sometimes we're left wanting for something simpler, something that just works. And that's what you get in the 2023 Honda CR-V. But don't take that for it having a boring interior. It's still handsome, it just happens to be highly functional, straightforward, and of a high quality.

Open the door to the CR-V Sport Touring (only available as a hybrid ), and you're presented with a dashboard that doesn't look much different than that in the Honda Civic , which is a good thing. It's a low, lean dash with a full-width screen hiding the vents and keeping the aesthetic uncluttered. Not only does this dash design help the interior feel open, it genuinely sits low enough that it helps give an excellent view out the windshield.

The use of piano black plastic is refreshingly restrained, simply placed around the air vent screen to add a different texture, and there are glints of chrome that pop on the control knobs without feeling flashy or gaudy. The rest of the dash is mostly soft-touch plastic, which feels decent, but does feel a little bit behind some other competitors that are offering nice upholstered panels such as Mazda and Mitsubishi .

The simple, approachable vibe continues with the controls. While not the most elegant, the touchscreen infotainment system is perched atop the dash and close to the driver. That makes it easy to glance over and read it, and its closeness makes it easy to reach. The Sport Touring picks up the larger 9-inch display, which makes the already-large, color-coded icon buttons even easier to discern. And while it does lose the tuning knob, the volume one remains along with Home, Back and skip track/station buttons on the left side. If you're only going to have a few physical buttons, these are great ones to have, especially the Home button for going in between the car's native system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Toyota's new system lacks one and it's a constant source of frustration.

cruise control honda cr v

Sitting below the center air vents are the dedicated, physical climate controls for which we're hugely grateful. And they also go a long way to elevating the feel of the cabin. The crispness of the knurling and the shine of the chrome would look just as good in an Audi or BMW . They feel just as good, clicking over with precision and a delicate, almost metallic sound. Honda may not have gussied up every part of the cabin, but it definitely put money where you'll most frequently notice.

And really, you'll get all of this in any CR-V, not just the Sport Touring. The only real dash difference across the line is a lack of a couple buttons for features, the screen size and the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter (available on Sport Hybrid and up).

The instrument cluster is a split between an analog speedometer dial and a small color info screen that can display a tachometer, fuel economy , power distribution and other driving information. It's nothing special, but it's clear and easy to read.

cruise control honda cr v

Moving onto the seating, and the CR-V continues to impress. The Sport/hybrid trims, including Sport Touring, all get nifty orange contrast stitching with the Sport Touring featuring leather upholstery. They're quite comfortable with firm, but not intrusive bolsters and plenty of padding. A slightly deeper seat base would be nice for those with long thighs, but it's still comfortable enough. There's plenty of adjustment between the power seat (on all but the base CR-V) and the steering wheel to find a comfortable position for looking out through the CR-V's generous glass area. Actual space for legs, head and hips are all excellent, too, for people large, tall, skinny or short.

The rear seats are just as good. They're certainly a bit more flat and firm than the front seats, as so many rear seats are, but the leg room is incredible, enough to rival large luxury sedans . Headroom is, literally, no slouch either. The adjustable recline adds to the comfort.

Cargo space on the other hand is good, but it's not class-leading. It's the same regardless of the powertrain, which is convenient, but at 36.3 cubic feet, it's not as spacious as Kia Sportage or Toyota RAV4 . The hybrids also lack a spare tire, which those competitors have. You can take a deeper dive into the cargo area with our Honda CR-V luggage test .

The CR-V may not have an interior that stuns in pictures or shocks friends with techno gimmicks. But it will wow you on a regular basis, impressing you with quality, comfort and convenience that you'll never get tired of.

The compact SUV segment has more than its fair share of entrants, and the Honda CR-V has long been considered one of the very best in this class. Thanks to its well-balanced mix of comfort, space, equipment, and economy, the CR-V has long been praised for delivering excellent bang-for-buck . However, things move quickly in such a competitive market, and the CR-V was fully redesigned for the 2023 model year to keep pace.

The new sixth-generation model is more spacious, has updated tech, and has a fresh new exterior and interior design. The hybrid model has increased cargo space, and for 2024, there are now six trims to choose from . Read on to learn everything you need to know about this new model to see whether these incremental updates are enough to retain the Honda CR-V's position as one of the top picks in its class.

This guide provides comprehensive information provided by the manufacturer. HotCars sourced additional data for reliability (from J.D. Power), EPA gas mileage (Fueleconomy.gov), safety ratings (IIHS), and recalls (NHTSA). We evaluate five different metrics when determining a rating for each model. You can read our Methodology page for more information about how our rating system works.

How The 2024 Honda CR-V's New Hybrid Trim Raises The Bar

The sixth generation Honda CR-V was introduced in 2023, and aside from the addition of a new Sport-L hybrid trim, everything has stayed the same for 2024. That's to be expected of a model that has just been comprehensively redesigned, and the addition of another hybrid trim now adds a bit more choice for customers.

2024 Highlights

  • Sport-L trim adds another hybrid option to the range
  • Hybrid models offer good performance and great fuel economy
  • Comprehensive driver assist systems standard across the range
  • Spacious interior and decent equipment levels throughout

Exterior Dimensions

The 2024 Honda CR-V is offered with two engine options. The base models are fitted with a 190 horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that is mated to a CVT transmission. FWD is standard, with AWD available as an option on all trims. Performance is acceptable rather than invigorating , with the 0-60mph sprint taking 8.7 seconds according to independent testing.

The hybrid models are fitted with a 2.0-liter gas engine that is assisted by two electric motors. Combined output figures are 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This gives the hybrid CR-V a bit more pep, taking over a second out of the 0-60mph time, and delivering better overtaking acceleration than the 1.5-liter motor. FWD is standard, with AWD an option on all but the top-spec Sport Touring Hybrid (which gets it as standard).

Performance Specifications

Towing capabilities and payload capacity.

It is unlikely that many owners will be buying a compact SUV to hook their boats up to. Still, they may want to tow a small trailer occasionally. The non-hybrid CR-V is best suited for this task, as it is rated to tow 1,500 pounds which is 500 more than the hybrid variants.

Off-Road Capability

If you plan to do any sort of off-roading in your CR-V we'd tick the AWD option box. This raises ground clearance from 7.8 to 8.2 inches and provides better traction on dirt or gravel roads. The Sport Touring Hybrid trim comes standard with AWD, but it is also fitted with larger 19-inch Gloss-Black Alloy wheels, so the lower-spec trims may be a better bet for some light off-roading as they come with higher profile 18-inch wheels. Non-hybrid models also offer slightly better approach and departure angles.

2024 Toyota RAV4 Vs 2024 Honda CR-V: Which Stands Out More?

Best interior features of the year make model.

  • Larger interior dimensions means more space for passengers
  • Sharp new interior design is practical, too
  • Hybrid models now offer the same cargo space as the rest of the range

The previous generation Honda CR-V was known for its spacious and comfortable interior . The new model, however, takes this to a new level. With its slightly larger dimensions, it now offers even more interior space, making it an ideal choice for up to five adults.

The new interior design looks great and lends an airy feel to the cabin. Heating and power adjustment for the driver's seat as well as a one-touch power moonroof are standard on all but the base LX trim. The top three trims also get leather instead of the standard cloth seat covers.

Cargo space has always been a CR-V strong point, and it continues to be the case. Hybrid models now also offer just as much space in the back as the gas-powered versions. With 39.3 cubic feet available behind the rear seats, the CR-V offers more space than the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester and the Mazda CX-50.

The new generation Honda CR-V has upped its tech game, but most of the desirable features are limited to higher trims, and some rivals are still one step ahead. All trims get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, although wireless connectivity and wireless charging aren't offered on the LX, EX or Sport Hybrid trims.

They are also saddled with a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, while the higher EX-L, Sport-L Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims get a larger 9.0-inch system. It is a responsive system and pretty intuitive, but many rivals offer larger screens and fully digital instrument clusters, too. To sum up, the Honda CR-V offers a decent level of tech, but you will have to pay up for the higher trims to get it.

Interior Dimensions

*EX is 40 inches due to lack of moonroof

The Honda CR-V has received a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS , scoring highly in all but the front moderate overlap test, where it received a poor rating. The NHTSA has not finished comprehensively testing the CR-V, but most results so far have fallen in the 5-star category.

There has been one recall so far for a passenger seat that was not properly welded, but of more concern are the inordinately high complaints by customers. In 2023, 310 complaints were registered, with 2024 already showing 102 complaints. Issues have ranged from driver assist malfunctions to electrical problems, but the highest by far has been for steering system issues. Many customers have experienced a sticking or non-responsive steering while driving. Interestingly, there have been just 5 complaints in total for the hybrid variants in both 2023 and 2024.

Driver Assistance Features

Honda has fitted its Honda Sensing driver assistance suite as standard to all CR-V trims. It includes a comprehensive package of assistance devices such as a cross traffic monitor, blind spot assist, and collision and road departure mitigation systems.

Standard driver assist features across all trims include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Collision mitigation braking system
  • Road departure mitigation system
  • Lane keep assist
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Auto high-beam headlights

IIHS Crash Testing

Nhtsa 5-star safety ratings.

  • Recalls (NHTSA): 1
  • NHTSA Investigations: 0
  • NHTSA Consumer Complaints: 102 complaints in 2024 - Most refer to sticky or twitchy steering wheels that make it hard to turn the vehicle. Most complaints are for non-hybrid CR-V models
  • Awards: IIHS Top Safety Pick + (2023)

Battle Of The 2023 Crossovers: 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan Vs 2023 Honda CR-V

There are no surprises when it comes to Honda's warranty offering for the CR-V. All new models are offered with a 3-year limited warranty which also includes roadside assistance, while the powertrain is covered for an additional 2 years. Servicing is not included in the purchase price, so customers will have to buy one of the vehicle service contracts on offer.

You certainly aren't limited for choice in the small SUV segment, and the new CR-V is up against some tough competition from several manufacturers. It still fills the brief better than most, focusing on core requirements like interior space, comfort, practicality and pricing. So, to see whether it still has what it takes, we have chosen the impressive Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4 as its competitors.

How The Honda CR-V Compares To The Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage has evolved from a mid-level competitor to one of the most impressive offerings in its class over a few short years. The latest model arrived in the US in 2023 and offers a wide range of trims and options to cover just about every base. The base 187 horsepower 2.5-liter gas engine is a bit anemic, while the 227 horsepower hybrid version is much quicker and more economical.

Tech features are impressive, too, with all but the lowest trims getting a 12.3-inch touchscreen and 12.2-inch digital instrument panel. Kia's class-leading warranty and competitive pricing add to the Sportage's appeal, although some of the more desirable trims can get pricey.

How The Honda CR-V Compares To The Toyota RAV4

The original Toyota RAV-4 is often cited as one of the first ever compact SUVs, and it has evolved into a pretty impressive offering over the years. But the competition hasn't been standing still either, and the current generation has been around since 2019. That puts it at a slight disadvantage when compared to newer rivals, but it still offers plenty of safety features, high levels of practicality, and a wide selection of options.

The base trim is really basic, and you won't get much speed or driving enjoyment out of the standard 203 horsepower 2.5-liter engine, but the overall capability of the RAV4 has helped it fend off newer alternatives , and it remains very popular in its class.

The CR-V offers a comprehensive list of safety devices across the range, but you will need to skip the base LX trim to access the more desirable tech and comfort features. This is true of many rivals, but the CR-V does start off at a higher base price than most.

The best value to be had is in the $32,000-36,000 range, where you can have either a highly specified gas-powered model, or a mid-range hybrid.

Here's Why The 2023 Kia Sportage Is Better Than The 2023 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V offers competitive fuel economy figures, with the FWD hybrid models offering the best results with a combined average of 40 MPG. The 1.5-liter turbocharged gas models can manage 30 MPG in FWD trim. This is similar to the Kia Sportage, but falls short of the gas-powered Toyota RAV4.

GAS/HYBRIDS

The Honda CR-V is a competent and fuss-free family SUV that offers impressive interior and cargo space, as well as all the safety features you'd expect from a newly released model. It doesn't excel in one particular area, but there are no glaring shortcomings either.

That may seem like a lukewarm analysis, but a small SUV is expected to perform a variety of tasks without issue, and the CR-V is as practical, comfortable and refined as they come. You may want to pay a bit extra for one of the hybrid models if you do a lot of driving, as you will appreciate the better performance and economy. If your focus is more on luxury and tech, then the mid-spec EX and EX-L models will fit the bill perfectly.

US opens investigation into Ford crashes involving Blue Cruise partially automated driving system

DETROIT (AP) — Two fatal crashes involving Ford’s Blue Cruise partially automated driving system have drawn the attention of U.S. auto safety regulators.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation of the crashes, both involving Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles on freeways in nighttime lighting conditions, the agency said in documents Monday.

The agency’s initial investigation of the crashes, which killed three people, determined that Blue Cruise was in use just before the collisions.

One of the crashes occurred in February in San Antonio, Texas , killing one person, while the other happened in Philadelphia in March in which two people died.

The agency says the investigation will evaluate how Blue Cruise performs driving tasks as well as its camera based driver monitoring system.

Ford said Monday it is working with NHTSA to support the investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which already is investigating the Feb. 24 San Antonio crash, determined in a preliminary report that it was operating on Blue Cruise.

The NTSB can only make recommendations, but NHTSA has the authority to take action including seeking recalls for safety issues.

Investigators found disconnected and missing hardware aboard the helicopter that crashed in 2022, killing the pilot and a North Carolina television station’s meteorologist, according to the National Transportation Safety Board's final report on the crash, which was released Thursday, May 2, 2024. (Alex Slitz/The Charlotte Observer via AP, File)

Ford says on its website that its driving systems do not replace human drivers, who have to be ready to take control at any time.

The Texas crash occurred on Interstate 10 in San Antonio. The NTSB report says the Mach E struck the rear of a 1999 Honda CR-V that was stopped in the middle of three lanes around 9:50 p.m. The 56-year-old driver of the CR-V was killed.

Another driver who was able to avoid the CR-V told investigators that neither its tail nor hazard lights were working at the time.

The NTSB said it intends to issue safety recommendations to prevent similar crashes. It has said it opened the probe due to continued interest in advanced driver assistance systems and how vehicle operators interact with the new technology.

The other crash involving a Mach E killed two people around 3:20 a.m. March 3 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia.

The Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday that a Mach E was in the left lane when it struck a stationary Hyundai Elantra that earlier had collided with a Toyota Prius.

The Mach E hit the Hyundai, pushing it into the rear of the Prius. During the crash, the driver of the Prius, who was outside of his vehicle, also was struck and thrown into the southbound lanes, the release said.

A police spokeswoman said a person from the Hyundai also was on the roadway and was hit. Both victims, males ages 21 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A police news release on the crash says a criminal investigation is underway and a charge of homicide by motor vehicle while driving under the influence is possible against the 23-year-old woman driving the Mach E.

Ford’s Blue Cruise system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel while it handles steering, braking and acceleration on highways. The company says the system isn’t fully autonomous and it monitors drivers to make sure they pay attention to the road. It operates on 97% of controlled access highways in the U.S. and Canada, Ford says.

There are no fully autonomous vehicles for sale to the public in the U.S.

Both NHTSA and the NTSB have investigated multiple previous crashes involving partially automated driving systems.

Last week NHTSA began investigating whether Tesla’s fix for a December recall involving more than 2 million vehicles equipped with the company’s Autopilot automated system took care of the problem. The recall was done because the driver monitoring system was inadequate and posed a safety risk.

NHTSA said it ultimately found 467 crashes involving Autopilot resulting in 54 injuries and 14 deaths.

10 most popular cars in Russia (PHOTOS)

cruise control honda cr v

In Russia, every third resident has their own vehicle. At the beginning of 2021, 45 million passenger cars were registered in the country. Almost a third of these are made by the Russian car company LADA. Toyota is currently the second most popular brand, with over four million cars in the country— the RAV4 and Camry are the most popular models. Next come Hyundai and Kia with over two million cars each in the country.

cruise control honda cr v

Compared with the United States and most of Europe, where around two out of three residents have their own vehicle, the car market in Russia is still relatively open and continues to develop. Russia imposes rather large customs duties on imported cars in order to force international car companies to produce their vehicles inside the country. As a result, many foreign car manufactures have localized their production in Russia and in some cases even modified their car models to accommodate Russian road conditions and people's tastes.

Russians prefer low-budget crossovers and sedans. Hatchbacks and station wagons are less common, and small electric cars are generally an unusual sight (there are just 11,000 electric cars in the country, and 9,000 of them are the Nissan Leaf).

"Russians are not interested in hatchbacks because of the lack of association with a high position in society," says Alexey Kozhukhov, an automotive marketing expert. He notes that in the Soviet period, a long Volga sedan was considered a high-class car and a symbol of power, and that these associations have been passed on to subsequent generations.

Manufacturers have created economy-class sedans and SUVs that are specifically catered to the Russian market. According to the Association of European Businesses , in the first half of 2021 around 45% of new cars sold were crossovers.

Best selling cars in Russia in 2021

1. lada granta.

cruise control honda cr v

The simplest and cheapest car on the Russian market, the Granta is assembled at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti. Some typical customer reviews state that the car is “reliable and without problems” or that “I didn’t have big illusions and got what I expected.” A sedan without air conditioning costs 560,000 rubles ($7,800), and the LUXE version with a heated windshield, cruise control and an automatic transmission costs 780,000 rubles ($11,000).

2. Lada Vesta

cruise control honda cr v

Lada’s latest model, the Vesta, is designed to be a sedan and crossover, although there is also a sports version. The car meets most consumers’ needs but is cheaper than foreign brands. “When I bought it, I understood that it was AvtoVAZ and there might be problems ahead, but the desire to buy this beauty simply prevailed, and I only wanted a new car in this budget,” one Russian driver writes , adding that he didn’t want to buy a used car.

The simplest model with a manual transmission, air conditioning and airbags sells for 795,000 rubles ($11,200), while the most expensive “Sport” version costs 1.2 million rubles ($17,000).

3. Hyundai Creta

cruise control honda cr v

This crossover is one of the most inexpensive cars in its class in Russia. Its price ranges from 1.2 million rubles ($17,000) to about 2 million rubles for the top version ($28,000). “Many Creta owners with a 1.6-liter engine complain about the sluggish dynamics. I wasn't looking for a racing car, so the car is fine for me. My priority was AWD, which fully justified itself. Now I can go to nature any time and not worry about getting stuck on a dirt road,” writes one driver from the Urals.

Hyundai also was also the first car manufacturer in Russia to offer online sales directly from the factory without the dealer.

4. Hyundai Solaris

cruise control honda cr v

The Solaris is a version of the Accent that was localized specifically for Russia in 2010 and is produced in St. Petersburg. Russian drivers seem quite satisfied with the model, which is a budget sedan that is resistant to temperature changes and harsh weather conditions and is generally reliable. “I wanted to use it for at least five years without looking under the hood,” wrote one driver about why he chose this model.

The Solaris ranges in price from 890,000 rubles ($12,500) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300) for the top configuration.

5. KIA Rio

cruise control honda cr v

The KIA Rio has also been produced in St. Petersburg since 2011, and, like the Solaris, only comes in a sedan model, which is more popular among local customers. The design and technical characteristics of the Russian Rio are slightly different from versions sold in other countries. Many drivers note that it has good heating and the ability to start at minus 30 Celsius. As a result, the car has become one of the best-selling models in the country. It ranges in cost from 950,000 ($13,400) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300)

6. Volkswagen Polo

cruise control honda cr v

All Polo models sold in Europe are hatchbacks, but in Russia Volkswagen opted to modify this legendary model to produce what has become one of the most popular sedans in Russia. “The car is a car. The trunk is huge and comfortable. There is quite a lot of space in the cabin, both in front and behind. The driving is not bad, better than other cars of this class,” writes one owner.

The Polo Sedan is assembled at a factory in Kaluga (about 200 km from Moscow). The cheapest model costs 1 million ($14,100), while the most expensive version goes for 1.9 mln rubles ($26,800).

7. Lada Niva

cruise control honda cr v

The first Soviet SUV is still in production and has a loyal customer base for its combination of being extremely cheap and strong for off-road driving. Many Russians use it to get to their remote dachas.

The simplest version costs 660,000 rubles ($9,300). The most expensive version is called the Niva Travel (formerly the Chevrolet Niva), costs 993,000 rubles ($14,000) and is equipped with a snorkel in case the car is overtaken by water in severe road conditions. And there is no automatic transmission! “Its passion is dirt roads, super suspension, it ‘swallows’ holes in the roads, you don't notice irregularities,” wrote a driver from the Amur Region in the Far East. However, customers note that the interior is not particularly comfortable and that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

8. Škoda Rapid PA II

cruise control honda cr v

This is another economy class sedan that has won the hearts of many Russian drivers. “The new Rapid is comfortable to drive, there is a lot of automation,” says one owner from St. Petersburg. They go on to write : “Turn the steering wheel and hit the gas, and switch on cruise control on a high-way, and the car will do everything else by itself.”

The Škoda Rapid is assembled at a plant in Kaluga. The simplest version costs 990,000 rubles ($14,000) and already includes a media system with a touch screen and Bluetooth. The most expensive version costs 1.4 million rubles ($19,700).

9. Renault Duster

cruise control honda cr v

Renault cars are assembled in Moscow. For a long time, the most popular Renault model was the Logan sedan, but this year the Duster SUV took that title. "Who can imagine a life that is no longer just being in a hurry," one driver jokes about driving the car. "The Duster is a family car. The car is enough to cheerfully stay in traffic" writes another.

The price of the simplest model with a manual transmission starts at 1 million rubles ($14,300), while the most expensive 4x4 version is twice as much.

10. Lada Largus VP

cruise control honda cr v

The only wagon model in this list is also produced by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. Largus is a fairly budget car that is popular not only among dacha enthusiasts, but also for commercial purposes. “The main plus is the suspension and stability on the road,” writes a driver from Tyumen (Siberia), “No need to worry about driving the highway on Largus in winter.” All versions are equipped with a manual transmission and cost from 780,000 ($11,000) to 978,000 rubles ($13,700).
