The best time to visit Egypt is during the shoulder seasons of October-November and February-April, when the weather is cool, but you can avoid the worst of the crowds during high season.

Egypt is a desert country — about 96% of the country  is covered by the desert. That means that its climate is mostly the extreme temperatures that you would expect from a desert area.

Summers in all parts of Egypt are oppressively hot. In Cairo, average temperatures near 100 degrees Fahrenheit in June, July, and August, and it’s the same throughout the country.

The hot, dry air makes it difficult to spend lots of time outdoors, and most of the country’s best sights are outside. Temperatures outside of summer are still warm, perfect for a beach vacation, but are far more pleasant.

In March-April and October-November, expect daily temperatures in the low 80s. Even winter temperatures in Egypt tend to be pleasant, rarely dipping below 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, although nighttime temperatures are much cooler.

Another factor when you are planning your trip to Egypt is crowds. Popular sites such as the Great Pyramids tend to be very crowded during the winter high season, especially since December and January see the most visitors at popular Red Sea resorts from cold Northern Europe.

October also sees a lot of tourist arrivals, especially on cruise ships and organized tours (the Alexandria sea port has the most cruise ship arrivals scheduled for October).

To beat the crowds and the sweltering summer heat, visit in late fall or during the spring. Egypt is also a popular destination for diving as the Red Sea Coast has spectacular coral reefs and marine life.

According to the Professional Association of Diving Instructors , March to November are good times to go diving, especially May-September when you can spot whale sharks and hammerhead sharks. The best time to visit the famous Dahab reef is spring or fall, when you can also see plenty of dolphins.

Spring is a good time to visit Egypt if you want to see some local festivals and traditional cultural events.

In spring is Coptic Easter (the exact date changes each year), followed by the traditional spring festival of Sham el-Nessim , when Egyptians celebrate the changing of the season by picnicking along the Nile and visiting fairgrounds.

This festival dates back to ancient Egyptian times and is celebrated by all faiths. If you want to spend lots of time in the desert, then the best time to visit is during the fall shoulder season.

Temperatures are milder, and you avoid the fierce khamsin desert winds  of spring that can disrupt travel plans. Early fall is the date harvest season in oases throughout the Western Desert, so you can taste this fruit fresh from the tree.

Cheapest Time to Visit Egypt

The cheapest time to visit Egypt is during the late spring, when you can find good package deals, and in certain regions, the summer.

Summer is Egypt’s low season as many international visitors tend to stay away due to the sweltering heat. If you base yourself in Cairo or one of the other interior cities, you can often find good deals on accommodation.

However, the high heat makes it almost impossible to meaningfully explore anything unless you are willing to explore before dawn, making it questionable if the less expensive hotels are worth it. You also shouldn’t expect to find good deals along the coast in the summer.

Thanks to the school holidays and the hot weather in the cities, wealthier Egyptian families tend to flock to the Mediterranean or Red Sea coasts during this season, and the demand causes the price to increase.

The best time to get deals no matter where you go in Egypt is the late spring. In May, the hotter temperatures mean the end of the high season for international visitors, but the summer rush hasn’t started yet.

Many popular resorts along the Red Sea Coast offer discounts for travelers that book package deals during this time.

During the spring, flights also tend to be least expensive to Egypt. If you are flexible with when you can go, make sure that you compare the prices of flights before booking.

Least Busy Time to Visit Egypt

The least busy time to visit most of Egypt is the summer, when the sweltering heat keeps many tourists away. During the summer, many international visitors avoid Egypt because temperatures can get uncomfortably hot in most of the country.

If you aren’t sensitive to the heat, this is the best time to visit to beat the crowds. You’ll find few other people in line at popular sites such as Luxor or the Great Pyramids.

The exception is the coast, because many Egyptians and international visitors alike flock to the Mediterranean and Red Sea Coasts to get some relief from the heat.

If you want to beat the crowds at popular beach resorts, visit during the late spring or early fall, when school is in session and the weather isn’t quite cool enough to attract international visitors yet.

Worst Time to Visit Egypt

The summer is the worst time to visit Egypt because the temperature simply makes it impossible to visit any prominent sites.

Don’t underestimate the Egyptian heat — even if normally you are fine with high temperatures, standing outside the Great Pyramids in the middle of the desert at 100 degrees, with no shade and no breeze may make you reconsider your trip.

It’s not worth visiting in the summer just to get some discount on hotels or avoid some of the crowds. Plus, because Egyptian kids are out of school during this summer, there is plenty of domestic travel, so demand tends to drive prices up.

It is still possible to visit Egypt in the summer. Stick to places with milder climates such as the coasts. Do most of your sightseeing very early in the day (such as 6 A.M.) before the temperatures really get unbearable.

Not only is it home to one of the world's most famous and intriguing archaeological sites , its year-round sunshine, world-class diving, and abundant culture continue to entice travelers the world over. Here's what you need to know when planning a trip to Egypt.

It depends. If you want to relax on the beaches of Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh , you’ll likely want sunshine and warm temperatures. The months either side of winter, October and November or March and April offer the best conditions, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, occasionally creeping into the low nineties.

If you’re planning to explore the busy streets of Cairo , you’re better off waiting for the cooler temperatures that December and January bring. Like much of the Middle East and North Africa, Egypt experiences warm and dry weather year round, although coastal areas do see rain and milder temperatures during winter.

When is the best time to visit Egypt to see the Pyramids?

The Pyramids of Giza are Egypt’s most-visited attraction, so naturally, many travelers plan their itinerary around a stop here. If you want to make the most of exploring the major archaeological sites at this complex, including the three pyramids of kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx, it’s best to avoid the summer months, when temperatures regularly reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

The months between December and February are the coolest, with highs of around the high sixties. However, evenings can get chilly during these months, so pack accordingly. This is also a popular time for organized group tours , so attractions can get crowded. March and October are good options, still offering cooler temperatures, with fewer tourists around.

For thousands of years, travelers have journeyed to Egypt to gaze in wonder at the ancient pyramids and temples left over from the time of the pharaohs, one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known. More recently, visitors also go to soak up the culture or to do business in Cairo ; and to discover the idyllic beaches and world-famous reefs of the Red Sea. If a trip to Egypt is on your bucket list, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is when to go.

If weather is your primary concern, the best time to visit Egypt is during the northern hemisphere fall, winter or early spring (October to April), when temperatures are lower. To avoid the crowds at ancient sites like the Pyramids of Giza , Luxor , and Abu Simbel, try to avoid peak season (December and January). At this time of year, accommodation and tours throughout the country are typically more expensive. Budget travelers can get good discounts in the summer and shoulder seasons.

The Weather in Egypt

For many people, weather is a crucial factor in deciding when to visit Egypt. The climate is typically hot and sunny throughout the year, and there is very little precipitation south of Cairo. Even in the wettest places ( Alexandria and Rafah), it only rains on an average of 46 days per year. Winters are generally mild, with daytime temperatures in Cairo averaging around 68 degrees F. At night, temperatures in the capital can drop to 50 degrees F or lower. In summer, temperatures reach an average of 95 degrees F, exacerbated by intense humidity.

It is important to remember that many of Egypt's ancient sights are located in desert regions that remain hot despite the proximity of the Nile River. Climbing into an airless tomb on a 100-degree day can be draining. Several top attractions are located in southern Egypt, where it is even hotter than Cairo. If you're planning on visiting Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel and/or Lake Nasser from May to October, make sure to avoid the midday heat by planning your sight-seeing for the early morning or late afternoon. Between March and May, the Khamsin wind brings thick dust and sandstorms.

Best Time to Cruise the Nile

With this in mind, the best time to book a  Nile cruise is between October and April. Temperatures are manageable at this time of year, allowing you to get the most out of day trips to iconic sights like the Valley of the Kings and the temples of Luxor. For the same reasons, travel during the peak summer months of June to August is not advised. Average highs for Aswan exceed 104 degrees F at this time of year, and there isn't a lot of shade to offer respite from the midday sun.

Best Time to Enjoy the Red Sea

June to September is an excellent time to visit the Red Sea beach resorts. Despite being the peak of summer, temperatures on the coast are much cooler than in the interior. Average summer temperatures at popular beach resort Hurghada  hover at around 84 degrees F, while the sea temperature is a balmy 80 degrees F—perfect for snorkeling and  scuba diving . In July and August it's essential to book well in advance, as resorts can get busy with vacationing Europeans and Americans; and with wealthy Egyptians seeking to escape the heat of Cairo.

Best Time to Visit Egypt's Western Desert

Summers in the desert should be avoided, as temperatures at destinations like Siwa Oasis  routinely exceed 104 degrees F. During the depths of winter, nighttime temperatures can plummet to just below freezing, so the best time to visit is halfway between the two in either spring or fall. February to April and September to November are the optimum times temperature-wise, although spring visitors should be aware of possible sandstorms as a result of the annual Khamsin wind.

Traveling to Egypt During Ramadan

Ramadan is the Muslim holy month of fasting, and the dates change every year according to the dates of the Islamic calendar. Tourists are not expected to fast when visiting Egypt during Ramadan. However, shops and banks tend to close for much of the day, while many cafés and restaurants do not open at all during daylight hours. At night, there is a generally festive atmosphere as eating and drinking resume. Toward the end of Ramadan, there are several festivities that are fun to experience and observe.

Spring is a nice time to visit Egypt, as temperatures are typically quite moderate. Some visitors may want to avoid the Khamsin wind season (March to May) as visibility is often impaired by sand and dust storms. This is a particular concern for keen photographers. Accommodation and tour prices are typically cheaper than they are in the peak winter season.

• Abu El Haggag Moulid, a five-day carnival in Luxor, typically takes place in the spring, a month before Ramadan. The festival celebrates a 13th-century Sufi leader, Yusuf Abu Al Haggag.
• People of Egypt celebrate Sham El Nessim to welcome the season of spring in the country. It usually takes place in April, after Coptic Easter.

Temperatures are often sweltering in summer, especially in Upper Egypt near Luxor. But traveling during this time has its perks: you can see Egypt without swells of fellow tourists, leaving you in peace at some of the country's most revered monuments. Ramadan typically falls during the summer months; beware that some attractions may close earlier than usual.

• Muslims end the long month of Ramadan with Eid al Fitr, a religious festival. 
• Wafaa Al Nil is an ancient festival devoted to the Nile River.

Like spring, fall brings cooler temperatures and affordable prices. Heat can sometimes last into October, but crowds are still thin, making this a great time to visit popular monuments. If you're planning a visit to the beach, this is an ideal season to do so as the Red Sea is still warm and uncrowded.

While winter can mean nice weather, it's also the high tourist season. Attractions will be more crowded, and hotel prices can skyrocket. There is occasional rain and some cities, like Alexandria, will be quite damp.

• On January 7, the Coptics of Egypt celebrate Coptic Christmas. At midnight, worshippers gather en masse and enjoy a traditional fatta meal together.
• The Abu Simbel Festival is held on February 22 each year in celebration of the eponymous temple.
• Formerly held in the summer, Egypt Art Fair is one of the largest exhibitions of contemporary art in the country.

The best time to visit Egypt is fall (from October to November) and spring (from February to April). The weather is mild and you can comfortably explore all of the outdoor desert sites without baking in the sun.

If you're visiting sites like Cairo, the Pyramids of Giza, or Luxor, summer temperatures are dangerously hot and you should avoid visiting. However, the coastal area around the Red Sea is much milder and you have the beach nearby to cool off.

The weather can vary from region to region, with a Mediterranean climate on the coast, and a more desert-like climate inland. 

There are usually two high seasons to consider when deciding the best time to visit Egypt.

The cooler winter months between December and February are the best time for exploring the ruins and archaeological sites.

The scorching hot summer months, between June and August, are a favorite time of year for hanging out at the Red Sea beach resorts.

Egypt Winter Months

Winter in Egypt is high season because the weather is cooler than other months of the year yet still beautifully sunny.

It’s a favorite spot for winter sun-seekers, and especially for lovers of Egyptology.

While the desert gets cold at night – bring a light jacket – the ruins, temples, and tombs of the Ancient Egyptians are best enjoyed in cooler climes when you won’t work up too much of a sweat.

December in Egypt

December is one of the most popular times to be in the country, and if you want to avoid the crowds, it’s never the best time to visit Egypt.

It’s sunny across the country, although the Mediterranean coast can be hit by the odd storm or rainy day.

It’s still hot, with temperatures hovering in the mid-twenties in most destinations. 

The Red Sea beach resorts are always popular over Christmas and New Year, as families head here from Europe looking for winter sun and a hot place to spend their holidays.

You’ll be paying high season prices, and sharing the beaches with a lot of other tourists.

Head south to the famous cities of Luxor and Aswan, and take a Nile River Cruise between the two.

While it’s definitely going to be busy, because the weather is perfect for exploring archaeological sites all day, it’s the best time to be in this part of Egypt. 

January in Egypt

January is likely to be just as busy as December, although visitor numbers will definitely start to fall off towards the middle of the month after the rush of the holiday season is over. 

If you want a winter sun getaway then head to the Red Sea for beaches, snorkeling, and diving.

If you’re a fan of all things Ancient Egyptian, then the weather is perfect for exploring iconic places such as the Pyramids of Giza or the Valley of the Kings, but you’ll be sharing the iconic sights with a lot of other tourists.

Culturally, this is the best time to visit Egypt if you’d like to learn more about the Coptic Christian communities.

January 7th is the most important day in the Coptic calendar, as this is when they celebrate Christmas. Head to the cities of Cairo or Alexandria to see and experience more.

February in Egypt

Compared to December and January, February is a lot quieter and it’s a great time to explore Egypt if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel.

The weather is getting much warmer already, but you might catch a few of the last winter storms, although these are a rarity even on the coast.

This is a great time to explore southern Egypt. Take a Nile River cruise from Luxor to Aswan, and enjoy the archaeological sites before it gets too hot. The crowds won’t be quite as large as the previous two months. 

Time your visit to coincide with the Abu Simbel Festival, held each February at the famous Abu Simbel Temples.

These are found on the Sudanese border, just a short journey from Aswan, and were built thousands of years ago by Ramesses II. The festival is a throwback to the region’s thousands of years of history and culture.

Egypt Spring Months

The weather really starts to warm up across Egypt as you leave winter behind and enter the spring season.

The Nile River is green and verdant after the winter rain, while there are many festivals and celebrations across the country.

This is a great time for shoulder season travel, before the busy summer months, but be aware of when important religious events such as Ramadan are, as this generally tends to happen around April and May.

March in Egypt

March is another shoulder season month, and it’s a great time to visit Egypt if you want to escape the crowds.

On the Red Sea, you can score cheap deals on flights and all-inclusive packages. With warmer waters and lots of sunshine, it’s really not a bad time lounge on the beaches or to enjoy some Scuba diving. 

You’ll have fewer crowds in the south as well, but remember that the desert is starting to heat up in March.

In reality, it’s a good time to visit the temples and pyramids before the heat and the crowds of summer.

April in Egypt

April can be a mixed bag in terms of visitor numbers because over the Easter holidays you’ll find plenty of tourists arriving.

Try to avoid these weeks if you want to visit in April.

Travel south to Luxor and Aswan, or stick around Cairo and explore the Pyramids of Giza and other famous ancient sites, because, after this, visitor numbers will start to rise again, as will the heat.

Alexandria is glorious in April, with lovely Meditteranean weather, sunny days and clear skies.

Visit the famed Biblioteca Alexandria and the many catacombs and ruins that date back to the Greek and Roman era, when the city was one of the most important in the ancient world. 

May in Egypt

May is the last quiet month before the summer high season begins in earnest in Egypt, and oftentimes, this is the month when Ramadan is likely to fall.

This can be a unique festival to witness, although non-Muslims will need to be aware of the rules and local customs during the holiday so as not to cause offense.

Weather-wise, it’s getting much hotter in May, and temperatures are rising exponentially.

It’s not a good time to be in the desert, but you will enjoy the sun and cooling winds that are found on the Mediterranean coast and the Red Sea.

Summer is the high season and it’s the best time to visit Egypt if you’re looking for a beach holiday.

It’s not the best time if you can’t handle the heat and the crowds. It’s hot and it’s busy, all through summer.

June in Egypt

June is the start of peak season travel in Egypt, and prices for flights, accommodation, and tours will begin to go up.

It’s not quite as busy as July and August are going to get, so it’s a good time to visit the resorts on the Red Sea before the huge crowds arrive.

With warm waters, it’s a great time to snorkel and scuba dive on the Red Sea too, or you could even dive below the waves of Alexandria Harbour.

This is where you’ll find the uniquely preserved remains of Cleopatra’s Palace many centuries after it was lost below the waterline. 

July in Egypt

July is busy because this is when the school holidays usually begin in earnest across Europe.

It’s guaranteed to be hot, and in the desert, temperatures will routinely rise well above 40 degrees Celsius in the middle of the day. Even the night time can be unbearably hot.

The heat doesn’t stop people visiting, although admittedly most vacationers tend to stick to the resorts, where you’ll find busy beaches all through June. 

August in Egypt

August will be just as busy as July because it’s still peak season and it’s the summer holiday season in Europe.

Prices will be higher than other times of the year, and beaches and tourist attractions will be crowded.

It’s going to be too hot to be anywhere other than the beaches though, so if you are visiting Egypt in August then brave the crowds and stick to the Red Sea resorts.

This way you can cool off in the swimming pools or in the sea. 

Egypt Fall Months

The fall season is a great time to explore Egypt’s interior, as the heat starts to dissipate.

Compared to summer, it’s going to be incredibly quiet through the fall months, and it’s a great time to grab a great deal on flights and tours. 

September in Egypt

If you can wait out the summer and travel in September, then this could be the best time to visit Egypt.

The weather is still undeniably hot, but things are starting to cool down, especially away from the coast. 

You can head south to explore the ancient sites around Luxor or cruise along the Nile River to Aswan and the Abu Simbel Temples.

October in Egypt

October is quieter than September, and it’s much cooler too. This is the perfect time to start visiting Egypt’s most famous attractions, and places that will soon become busy again in the winter.

Explore the archaeological delights of Luxor and Aswan, take in the bustling streets of Cairo and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Or uncover the hidden history of Alexandria, while enjoying the warm climes of the Mediterranean. 

November in Egypt

November is the last shoulder month before the high season starts again in December.

It’s much cooler in November and it’s a beautiful time to explore Egypt, as you’ll avoid the worst of the summer heat and miss the worst of the winter crowds.

Take the opportunity to visit iconic destinations and famous tourist attractions, or get a steal on a resort on the Red Sea.

After this, it’s only going to get busier.

If you are trying to work out the best time to visit Egypt, the advice in this travel post will help you plan the perfect trip.

Egypt is a popular destination steeped in history and culture with some of the world’s most iconic ancient wonders. However, you don’t want to be wandering around the Abu Simbel temples or the Valley of the Kings in the sweltering heat – it’s just no fun.

But whether you dream of a Nile River cruise, exploring the Giza pyramids, or simply soaking up the sun in one of the Red Sea resorts, there’s a perfect time to experience it all, and that information is in this Egypt weather guide.

So, grab your sun hat and let’s dive into the best time to visit Egypt.

My Favourite Time of Year to Visit Egypt

I have visited Egypt three times so far and will no doubt return in the future. I travelled to Sharm el-Sheikh in April and October to make the most of beach time, snorkelling and scuba diving, and the weather was fabulous. My last visit to Hurghada and Luxor was also in the peak tourist season of April.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t as warm as is customary, and while my holiday coincided with the time when the annual scirocco hot winds and sand storms can arrive, I encountered the opposite. We had cold winds and sat on our sun loungers wearing hoodies. It is hard to believe it’s not always hot in Egypt, but it is another sign of climate change (according to the staff in our resort).

I took a 2-day tour from Hurghada to Luxor to see the temples and tombs, and the temperature was warmer than at the coast. However, in my photos, you can see me wearing a denim jacket because I am always cold no matter where I am, even in places like Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Desert!

Walking around the temples in Luxor and visiting the Valley of the Kings was very pleasant, but I kept my hoodie on as the tombs were a little chilly. And while visiting the Pharoah’s tombs in April was busy, we could still take lots of photographs (yes, it is allowed without a flash) and spend time immersing ourselves in thousands of years worth of history without feeling rushed.

Weather in egypt from october to april: the best months to visit.

If you’re looking for the optimal time to visit Egypt, you’ll want to plan your trip during the cooler months, from October to April. During this popular time of the year, Egypt enjoys sunny days with milder temperatures, making outdoor exploration of the historic sites much more comfortable.

Egypt Weather Overview

• October to November: This is considered the shoulder season, with temperatures in October ranging from 30°C (90°F) and dropping to 20°C (70°F) in November. It’s ideal for sightseeing, as the summer heat has subsided, but it’s not too cold to enjoy the outdoors.
• December to January: The winter months in Egypt bring cooler temperatures, but it’s still quite pleasant for tourists. Daytime temperatures hover around 15°C to 20°C (60°F to 70°F), but be prepared for cooler evenings.
• January to March : Egypt typically experiences a mix of weather in these months as the country moves into early Spring. It can be sunny and warm, with pleasant daytime temperatures, but can also turn a little chilly with occasional rainfall. Temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (70°F to 80°F). As a result of the favourable climate, hotels, cruises, and tourist sites tend to be busy with visitors, especially during the New Year period.
• March to April: Springtime is the high season and is the ideal time of year to visit Egypt, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 35°C (70°F to 100°F). The landscape is lush and green after the winter rains, making it an excellent time for photography.

What to Wear in Egypt in Spring and Autumn

Consider comfort and modesty when packing for your Spring or Autumn Egyptian adventure. Here’s a handy checklist of what to wear:

• Lightweight Clothing: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Long-sleeved tops and lightweight bottoms are perfect for keeping cool while protecting your skin from the sun. Pack a shawl to wrap around the shoulders in the evenings.
• Sunhat: Make sure to keep your head covered from the sun.
• Sunglasses and Sunscreen: The Egyptian sun can be quite intense, so don’t forget your shades and a good sunscreen with high SPF. Factor 30 and above is recommended.
• Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so bring comfortable, closed-toe shoes for exploring archaeological sites and cities; otherwise, you will end up with a foot full of sand!
• Modest Attire: With respect for local customs, dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Women should carry a scarf to cover their shoulders and head if needed.
• Swimwear: If you plan on enjoying the Red Sea or the luxurious pools at your resort, pack your swimsuit.

Weather in Egypt from May to September: Surviving the Egyptian Summer

While Egypt is captivating year-round, the scorching summer months from May to September can be challenging for tourists. If you’re prepared to brave the heat, you can still enjoy Egypt during this time. However, be ready for daytime temperatures soaring above 35°C (95°F) and sometimes even hitting 45°C (120°F) in Egypt’s hottest months.

April to May: During these months, you’ll find the climate starting to hot up, from 25°C to 35°C (80°F to 100°F). April is one of the best times of the year to visit Egypt. It is worth noting that, occasionally, Egypt experiences the Khamsin Wind, a brief but intense sandstorm of scorching hot winds, sometime between April and May. However, fear not, for this natural phenomenon rarely disrupts the rhythm of daily life.

The festival of Sham el-Nessim takes place on Easter Monday, following the Coptic calendar, and is a cherished tradition observed across Egypt. It’s a time when Egyptians come together to celebrate the rebirth of nature and the spirit of this ancient land.

So, if you plan to visit Egypt at Easter, prepare for it to be busy. This holiday season is among the liveliest times to explore Egypt, and as demand surges, so do prices. It’s wise to secure your accommodations and activities well in advance.

Hottest months in Egypt

June to August: These months are the height of summer in Egypt, where temperatures can soar to impressive heights between 35°C and 45°C (100°F to 120°F) and sometimes even higher. Fewer travellers brave the heat during these months, leaving an opportunity to experience Egypt’s marvels with fewer crowds visiting the iconic sights. This is often a good time to get a bargain as prices for flights, hotels, tours, and day trips can be substantially lower than in peak season.

September to October: Temperatures in September have not changed too much from the summer season; however, cool sea breezes make it more bearable if you are planning a beach break along the Red Sea coast in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada or one of Egypt’s other popular seaside resorts. As the months progress, the temperature starts to drop slightly from the heady 45°C (120°F) to a more manageable 30°C (90°F)

What to Wear in Egypt in Summer’s Extreme Heat:

• Lightweight and Breathable Clothing: Loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing is a must to stay cool in the blistering heat.
• Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are essential for protection against the intense sun.
• Hydration: Carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated, and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
• Rest: Take breaks in the shade whenever possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak sun hours.

• Plan Ahead: Egypt’s iconic attractions, such as the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, can get crowded, so book your tours and accommodations in advance.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

• Month-by-month

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, when temperatures are cooler, but still pleasantly warm across the country. This makes exploring the busy streets of Cairo, visiting the Pyramids in the desert, and exploring ancient Pharaonic tombs more comfortable and enjoyable.

The summer season (May to September) is hot, although the high temperatures are alleviated by very dry air, air conditioning, far fewer visitors and lower prices. This means summer is still a viable season for your trip. There also tends to be a bit of a breeze on the Nile, making a river cruise a good choice during this period.

Month-by-month guide for traveling in Egypt

Visiting Egypt in January - March

January through to March is usually sunny and warm, with occasional rain. This is within the peak traveling season as temperatures are cooler and more comfortable than in the summer months, which means that hotels, cruises and sites can get very busy; particularly around the new year period.

Visiting Egypt in April - May

The weather gets warmer but is still pleasant during April and May, making this a very popular time to visit. The Khamsin Wind, a minor but extremely hot sandstorm, sweeps across Egypt for a few days at some point during April and May, but does not usually cause any major disruption. Easter is one of the busiest times to travel in Egypt, and prices rise accordingly.

• Sham el-Nessim: A Coptic festival of Pharaonic origin which celebrates the coming of spring. This is held on Easter Monday according to the Coptic calendar, and is celebrated with picnics in parks and on riverbanks throughout the country. Visiting Egypt in June

June is the start of the scorching heat of the summer, but temperatures are not yet at their peak. This can therefore be a great time to visit if you don't mind the heat as prices are much lower than they are during the milder months of the year.

Visiting Egypt in July - August

This is the peak of the summer and temperatures are very high. However, if your hotel has air conditioning and a swimming pool, or if you simply want to relax on a Nile cruise , this can be a great time to visit. Far fewer people travel to Egypt during the summer months, which means that you can escape the crowds at most tourist sites and make the most of some fantastic photographic opportunities.

Visiting Egypt in September

The weather in September is quite similar to that in June; temperatures are still high but sea breezes make the heat more bearable and prices are usually lower than they are between October and May. This can be the best time to visit places such as the Red Sea as you'll escape both school vacations and the crowds of the autumn/winter peak season. 

Visiting Egypt in October - December

The weather is much cooler during the winter months, though still warm, making it an ideal time to visit the cultural sites of Egypt in comfort. However, this is also the busiest time of year for Egypt. Over Christmas and New Year, hotels and cruises raise their rates significantly and rooms/cabins get booked far in advance, so it is advisable to plan your trip early.

Plan the perfect trip to Egypt with these essential tips on etiquette, health and safety © Grant Faint / Getty Images

Egypt’s  rich history reverberates through its modern-day culture. There’s plenty to do that will engage all your senses, from majestic ancient sights to lively streets rife with aromatic foods, and the vibrant and eclectic nightlife.

To fully indulge in all the excitement, there are some things you should consider, including the country’s cultural traditions. But worry not: this guide to planning and packing along with tips on health, safety and etiquette will have you ready for the a fantastic experience in Egypt.

1. Consider getting your visa in advance

Bags in one hand and paperwork in the other is all many travelers need to get on a plane and fly to Egypt. If you’re eligible , you can get a renewable single-entry tourist visa on arrival for USD$25, valid for 30 days. However, if you’re missing any documents or if there’s a problem processing your visa on arrival, you may be denied entry.

If you prefer a multiple-entry visa or want to avoid lines at the airport, you can apply for an e-Visa through the official government portal before travel to avoid any entry issues or delays.

2. Prepare a rough itinerary

There’s so much more to Egypt than the pyramids, and planning ahead will help you avoid a logistical nightmare. Plan your days by area (especially in major cities where traffic is both intense and unpredictable) so it’s easier to move around between locations.

If you’re a beach lover , there are plenty of destinations on the North Coast or Naama Bay for diving or snorkeling trips. If you’re an avid explorer and prefer something off the beaten track , Egypt’s lesser-known gems – like the stunning Siwa Oasis  – are absolutely worth the adventure.

Egypt truly caters to every kind of traveler, and the best way to create a personalized experience is to focus on what’s important to you and plan accordingly.

3. Learn some basic Arabic phrases

Whipping out Google Translate for quick questions about directions can be helpful, but organic responses to basic niceties will prove useful. 

Most Egyptians are eager to help when asked, but you might need to tie up a few odds and ends in Arabic with unilingual locals. They also come in handy if you need to fend off hustlers or persistent merchants. Learning a few words and phrases like “ al salam alaykom ” (hello), “ shukran ” (thank you), “ aywa ” (yes), “ la’a ” (no), and “ ma’ al-salama ” (goodbye) will go a long way.

4. Don’t underestimate Egypt’s weather – both hot and cold 

Sunscreen is key if you don’t want to spend the better half of your vacation huddled up with ice packs. This is especially true if you’re visiting during the summer, but holds up throughout the year.

July is the hottest month, with temperatures ranging anywhere from 34.7°C (94.5°F) to a scorching 43.3°C (109.9°F). Yet, despite its year-round sunny skies, Egypt’s overall desert climate makes winters especially cold – the kind of cold that creeps beneath your clothes and gives you chills right down to your bones.

It doesn’t help that the poorly insulated buildings barely keep the freezing weather at bay, so you have to talk yourself into going outside because it’s warmer outdoors than it is indoors. Temperatures drop as low as 10°C (50°F) at times, so if you’re visiting between October and March , make sure to pack some warm clothes along with your sunscreen. 

5. Pack for the heat, but keep it conservative

Egypt is known for its cotton, and what better place to wear cotton than here. Pack airy breathable clothes, and break out all the pastels and bright colors in your closet. Most people in major cities dress casually and embrace comfort over fashion. But remember that Egypt is a country with primarily conservative locals.

You can’t go wrong with loose clothing, and exposing too much skin is generally frowned upon. Men can sport tank tops if they’re comfortable with a few extra stares, but short shorts are not advisable, and women should avoid low-cut tops, short shorts/skirts or revealing dresses.

Beach destinations bend these unspoken rules, however, and locals are accommodating to visitors, so if you're heading for the beach, you don't need to leave all your shorts and sundresses behind.

6. Keep transportation in mind when booking accommodation

While booking your lodgings, look into modes of transportation in the surrounding area. If you’re planning a short time in your destination, opt for lodgings central to the sights on your itinerary or close to a metro station so you don’t waste too much time stuck in traffic. If you’ve got more time, you can opt for something a little less central, but remember that you could spend a chunk of your time traveling. 

Cairo and Giza are mostly accessible using the metro system, and if you’re a female traveler we recommend you seek out the carriages reserved for women.

Some destinations will require further planning, and white taxis and Uber rides are your best bet. If you opt for a white taxi, always make sure the meter’s running before you hop in, and hail it a few meters away from your hotel for a cheaper ride. Avoid taxis that don’t use meters and aren’t very tourist-friendly. Long-distance buses and domestic flights are an option too, depending on your budget.

7. Be mindful of your etiquette at religious and historic sites

It’s important to not just dress appropriately but to also be mindful of local etiquette especially at certain sights.

Visiting a mosque? Take off your shoes before entering and, if you’re female, cover your head. 

At a historic site? Don’t touch the antiquities and always use cameras without the flash.

On the beach? Yes you can sport your best swimsuit and relax, but like every place in the world, there’s always a code of conduct. Be observant and if in doubt, do what the locals do.

Local tip: Photography is encouraged at tourist sites, but don’t photograph people without their consent, and don't take photos where it is explicitly prohibited.

8. Avoid public displays of affection

We’ve established that Egypt leans toward conservative, and this extends to public displays of affection. While holding hands with your partner won’t garner much attention, limit your public physical interactions to what would be considered mild and proper. 

Platonic kisses on the cheek are a common greeting between friends in Egypt but, depending on your surroundings, should be limited to members of the same sex.

9. Bring small bills and be prepared to tip

Tipping in Egypt is still standard practice, especially in the service industry. Tips, or baksheesh , can range from 5 EGP (<$0.50) to 100 EGP ($5.50), depending on who you are paying and where.

Egypt is largely cash-oriented, so pick up both large and small bills when you’re exchanging currency to make payments and tipping easier.

Restaurants and cafes are easier to figure out, with 10-15% of the bill being customary, and loose change is the norm for food purchases from street vendors. Higher tips are usually reserved for people who provide you with long-term services, such as drivers and tour guides. While you’re not required to tip delivery services, taxis, and ride-hailing apps, you can round up the bill if you’ve had a satisfying experience. 

10. Haggling for souvenirs is part of the experience

From papyrus papers and traditional souvenirs to carefully crafted silverware and hand-painted ceramics, markets in Egypt are a treasure trove. But if you feel like something is overpriced, don’t shy away from haggling.

While vendors aren’t particularly fond of the back-and-forth, it’s all part of the experience and no matter what you pay in the end you can convince yourself it was a great deal.

Don’t attempt to haggle in bigger shops in or outside tourist attractions, and if there’s an official price posted on the product, it’s usually non-negotiable.

Pro tip: Keep your eyes and ears open and gauge the price range of similar items in nearby stores so you can tell if you’re being overcharged. Haggling is mainly confined to souvenir spots, souks (markets) and less formal selling areas. 

11. Don't drink the tap water and beware of food carts

To dodge any stomach bugs that might ruin your Egyptian adventure, avoid drinking tap water unless it’s filtered, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Pack a good water-filtering system or do like the locals and use bottled water. 

While Egyptian cuisine is one of the country’s best assets, and the temptation to sample it every chance you get is understandable, some carts improperly store their food. It can be difficult to tell as a visitor, so it may be wise to opt for local shops instead. They often offer similar food but are generally safer to indulge to your heart’s content.

12. Flood season is June to September

Flooding is an issue in Egypt in June to September, but it’s usually mild and mostly limited to some coastal areas. It’s always a good idea to activate news alerts on your phone anyway and keep an eye on the local news.

The floods are usually easy to manage, but roads can be impacted, especially in some areas in South Sinai.

13. Solo female travelers may receive unwanted attention

If you’re a woman traveling on your own , keep an eye out for harassers, scammers and hustlers who may be pushy and persistent. Confident interactions are often key to driving them away, but calling out for assistance or announcing you’ll involve the police can be a good deterrent as well. 

As a rule of thumb, try to avoid interactions with individuals in suspicious settings, like quiet alleyways, dark street corners, and empty spots, and look for crowds with women and children if you feel unsafe. Never get into a taxi or Uber with anyone but the driver. Ride in the carriages reserved for women on the metro in Cairo. And, as is sadly the case in most of the world, avoid walking alone late at night.

14. Tourist police can assist you in an emergency 

Egypt is generally considered safe to visit, but if you face any issues that you believe require law enforcement interference, look for police officers with a tourism police badge on their shoulders – it’s a navy blue half sleeve with a gold eagle in the middle, and “Tourism and Antiquities Police” written at the bottom. They are stationed at every tourist destination in Egypt and can also be reached by dialing 126 from any Egyptian mobile number.

If you’d rather file a complaint later, you can dial 19654 and communicate directly with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. It's also a good idea to keep the number of your home embassy or consulate handy.

Pro tip: Invest in an Egyptian SIM card upon arrival. They’re cheap and will make local interactions much easier for you. Vodafone, Etisalat, Orange and WE are Egypt’s top mobile service providers; you can find their booths in the final hall on your way out of Cairo International Airport.

Much like its north-African neighbor, Morocco , there's a surge in tourism between November and February when temps are cooler, so visiting in the spring (March/April) or autumn (September/October) is ideal if you want to dodge intense heat and large crowds. But when’s better – spring or autumn? If you can take your pick, autumn is generally better as spring brings the khamaseen – a hot sand wind occurring irregularly in the first half of the year. While still considered spring, things start heating up in April, and you can expect daytime highs between a bearable 77 to 86°F. The khamaseen is still blowing, though it’s not as intense as March. May sees hot, sunny days and balmy evenings. With the wind calming down and temperatures yet to peak, it’s a great month to head to Aswan – Egypt's southernmost city – to explore the beautiful Temple of Isis (the Goddess of health, marriage and wisdom) and learn about Nubian village life. June marks the start of the sweltering summer heat. The sun can be oppressive during the day, with temperatures hitting 95 to 104°F. If you don’t mind waking up earlier to explore and getting sweaty, the upside is that there’ll be fewer tourists at the Pyramids, Valley of Kings and other famous landmarks. For a reprieve from the heat, head to the glittering waters of Hurghada on the Red Sea coast, where you'll find slightly cooler temps and a light sea breeze – just be prepared for it to be busy.

Best for: Eid Al Adha, small crowds and minimal queues.

Sweat-inducing temps continue in July, so perhaps steer clear if you don’t cope well with the heat. That being said, you may enjoy a July trip if you want to discover all the must-see sites which are usually swarming with tourists (it's one of the quietest months). It’s best to wake up early and make the most of the evenings when the temperature drops. July is also an interesting time to be in Egypt with Eid Al Adha   (Feast of Sacrifice), a major four-day Islamic festival involving prayers and meat feasts.

August is hot (like, really hot), and so it's one of the quietest months. With practically no queues at all the landmarks and museums, you can take your time and don't need to worry about holding up the line when you get fixated on something fascinating (it'll happen a lot!). Just note that August is the peak season for domestic travelers, but they usually flock to the beaches and resorts along the coast.

Best for: diving and snorkeling, Coptic New Year, Milad un Nabi.

The summer heat subsides in September (especially towards the end of the month), and domestic holidayers head home. Feluccas drifting down the River Nile, ancient wonders found in dusty temples, warm waters filled with tropical fish: Egypt remains one of the world’s most atmospheric destinations.

With millennia-old pyramids, hallowed temples and intricately painted tombs worthy of an art gallery, Egypt has a mindboggling amount of history on show. Some of the first threads of human civilisation started here over 5,000 years ago, and Egyptians still call their country umm al dunya — mother of the world.

Egypt offers the opportunity to time-travel like few other places. The past seems to keep careful watch over the present. The Pyramids of Giza — the last survivor of the original seven wonders of the ancient world — overlook cacophonous Cairo , the third-largest metropolis in Africa and the biggest in the Middle East. South along the River Nile, a temple built more than 3,400 years ago stands in the centre of the modern city of Luxor, which was once ancient Thebes.

The Nile flows through the hearts of most of Egypt’s major cities. This blue-green ribbon keeps the ever-encroaching biscuit-coloured desert at bay, coaxing lush plant life amid the Saharan sands. Fly in a hot-air balloon over the west bank of Luxor to see just how abruptly the desert reasserts its dominance over riverbanks lined with date palms and green grasses. Or travel like royalty, following in the footsteps of legendary pharaohs and their armies and merchants, on a scenic multi-day cruise along the Nile, making the temples and tombs between riverside Luxor and Aswan easily accessible.

Egypt’s extensive pharaonic history takes centre stage for most travellers, but even more adventure awaits on a different waterfront, to the east along the Red Sea in the Sinai Peninsula. The three Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Islam and Judaism — put great credence in stories said to have unfolded in the mountains of the Sinai. Most famously, Moses is supposed to have received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and listened to God at the burning bush, where he was instructed to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

These high peaks make a stunning backdrop for surfacing snorkellers and for scuba divers returning from explorations of the Red Sea. Beneath the water’s surface, a bountiful aquarium of sea turtles, sharks and neon-bright fish dart around flourishing coral reefs that sprout along the sea floor and scale the vertical walls. Witnessing the wildlife of the Red Sea is one of the world’s great underwater experiences, and pairing it with a Nile cruise allows travellers to experience the broad range of Egyptian adventures.

Itinerary 1: The Nile Valley

Herodotus, the 5th-century BCE Greek historian, famously called Egypt the ‘gift of the Nile’, but perhaps that description doesn’t go far enough. Egypt would be almost nothing without it. The river, the longest in the world, isn’t simply a watery artery stretching nearly 1,000 miles across the length of the country — it’s a genuine lifeline, and one of the world’s earliest civilisations wouldn’t have started here without its life-giving properties.

Ancient Egypt’s major temples and cities were located along the Nile’s fertile banks, called Kemet (‘the black land’) by its inhabitants. The fact that the river flows from south to north was key to the Egyptians’ worldview, with its focus on the daily journey of the sun between the horizons. The desert fringes on the Nile’s west bank — symbolically associated with the land of the dead — are where you’ll find most of the country’s tombs and pyramids. The ancient Egyptian idea of paradise, the ‘Field of Reeds’, was but a heavenly version of the real-life abundance of greenery along the Nile. Today, some 95% of Egyptians still live within a few miles of the water.

This itinerary, following the Nile’s course upriver on a boat cruise, has been travelled since the days of the pharaohs, and it remains the most popular way to explore Egypt, hitting all of the country’s major historic sites. To escape the crowds, slow down — linger longer in Luxor, dig deeper in Cairo and relax in Aswan. Egypt hides many more treasures beyond the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings for travellers who take the time to seek them out.

Highlights along the Nile Valley

1. Cairo Dive into Egypt’s chaotic capital. The Pyramids of Giza are the stars of the show, and the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum will be a blockbuster when it finally opens. For now, marvel at the 20 royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and find the gold death mask of Tutankhamun, housed in the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square until the GEM is ready.

2. Luxor Take the train (around 10 hours, daytime or sleeper) to Luxor, built atop the ancient capital of Thebes. Big-hitters at this UNESCO site include the Luxor Temple and religious complex of Karnak, and the tombs of pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings outside town. Other nearby sites include the Ramesseum, whose giant statues inspired the poem ‘Ozymandias’, and the temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.

3. Edfu Board a cruise boat in Luxor and spend the best part of the day sailing the Nile, with scenes of desert dunes and a shoreline punctuated with date palms unspooling outside your cabin. The standard first stop 70 miles upriver is Edfu, a tiny town with a well-preserved temple.

4. Kom Ombo The Nile crocodile takes centre stage at Kom Ombo, another 40 miles or around five hours’ sailing from Edfu. Half of the unique ‘double’ temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of pharaonic power and fertility, and an intriguing museum of mummified crocodiles awaits at the end of your visit.

5. Aswan All cruises dock at Aswan, after two nights on board en route from Luxor. The Nile is at its most fascinating here. Take a felucca (small sailboat) to Gharb Soheil, a brightly painted village home to a few thousand Nubians, an Indigenous group that has lived in the region since pharaonic times. For sunset, have a drink on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel , made famous by Agatha Christie, who wrote part of Death on the Nile here.

6. Abu Simbel Abu Simbel sits on the shore of Lake Nasser, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. The temples were rescued from rising waters by moving them stone by stone to higher ground. Twice a year, the sun still illuminates the figure of Ramses II and two of the three gods in the temple’s inner sanctum.

Itinerary 2: The Red Sea & Sinai

Start point: Sharm el-Sheikh End point: Nuweiba Distance travelled: 250 miles Average length: 7 days

Egypt’s best-known body of water is a river, but the Red Sea that stretches along the country’s eastern coast guarantees some thrilling aquatic adventures of its own. Suitable for all levels of underwater explorers, from snorkellers to advanced scuba divers, the Red Sea is a technicolour dream world beneath its surface. There are a huge number of endemic fish — including species of elegant highlighter-yellow butterflyfish, neon parrotfish and shy clownfish lingering in finger-like anemones — and thriving coral reefs.

Sprawling resorts have taken up much Red Sea real estate around Sharm el-Sheikh, but the development and crowds thin out as you travel north. Just a few miles inland from the coast, Sinai’s interior reaches for the sky, a sacred land of pilgrimage and revelations still lived in by long-established Bedouin tribes. Hiking trails climb to mountain summits and wind through valleys carved with centuries of graffiti left by visitors from the Nabataeans (of Petra fame) to the Crusaders, leading to secret wild swimming pools and small waterfalls.

This itinerary hits Egypt’s superlative highs and lows — from the country’s loftiest peaks to its deepest dive sites — as it traces the eastern edge of Sinai and traverses the peninsula’s biblically connected mountains.

Highlights on the Red Sea and Sinai

1. Sharm el-Sheikh When you need a break from sun, sand and snorkelling, Sharm has a couple of worthy distractions. The Sharm el-Sheikh Museum — the only such collection on the peninsula — has a digestible assortment of artefacts that span Egypt’s history from the pharaohs to the Bedouin. At the heart of the Old Market, which, despite its name, is quite new, the Sahaba Mosque looks like it could have come from the drawing board of Gaudí, with spiralling brick columns and honeycombed minarets.

2. Ras Mohamed National Park At the southernmost tip of Sinai, Egypt’s first national park is blessed with incredible dive sites. Vertical reef walls have names that hint at the types of species scuba divers and snorkellers can see: Jackfish Alley, Eel Garden, Shark Observatory and Anemone City. Divers with advanced certifications can check the shockingly large concentration of shipwrecks and the contents that have spilled out on the sea floor. Sleep in a canvas tent on the beach within the park boundaries at Bedouin-owned Bedawi Eco Camping .

3. Dahab A chilled hangout spot for a curious mix of nomadic types — of both the digital and Bedouin varieties — Dahab is Egypt’s most laid-back destination. Whitewashed cafes draped with colourful Bedouin-style rugs line the crescent-shaped bays, where flippered snorkellers waddle past remote workers clacking away on laptops. North of town, the Blue Hole is infamous for its underwater tunnel, the Arch, which has seen a number of fatalities over the years; it is a safe and popular spot for responsible snorkelling and diving outside of that.

4. St Catherine Sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, the UNESCO-listed area around St Catherine’s contains the world’s oldest continuously lived-in Christian monastery, watched over by majestic mountains that are some of the tallest in the country. No matter your religious beliefs, join a night-time pilgrimage, arriving to witness sunrise from the summit of   Mt Sinai , or Jebel Musa (Mt Moses) in Arabic. Add on a day or more to walk with the local Jebeliya Bedouin through the neighbouring valleys that few outside visitors make time to see.

5. Nuweiba A small town with a laidback vibe and quiet golden beaches, one of Nuweiba’s main attractions is Dar Jan . A passion project by a couple who left the big smoke of Cairo, the nine-acre organic farm north of town is unlike elsewhere on the peninsula. Travellers can join creative workshops, including organic agriculture and outdoor survival skills, and spend artsy afternoons of pottery, meditation and mosaic-making. You can stay overnight, too.

Visiting Egypt in Summer

June, July and August is low season in Egypt due to soaring summer temperatures during the days, particularly in South Egypt, which includes Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel , and on the beaches of the Red Sea. A visit during these summer months is not the best due to the heat, and often tourist amenities are more likely to be closed or harder to locate if you plan to travel independently.

The Pyramids at Gisa are certainly Egypt's most icon sights, as they tower over the desert landscape.

Close by in the shadow of the Pyramids sits the enigmatic Sphinx. Built around the same time as the Pyramids in what is known as the Old Kingdom, the Sphinx is a giant sandstone statue of a lion with a man's head.

Built as a spiritual guardian of the Pyramids it is a representation of the solar deity and was built from a single block of sandstone.

It is thought to have taken over 3 years to build and although the ravages of time and man has taken its toll on this magnificent structure, it remains a beautiful view to behold.

Situated on the banks of the River Nile River Nile in Luxor, the temple of Karnak is perhaps one of Egypt most impressive attractions.

Originally built on the site of ancient Thebes, and known as the Temple of Amun, the structure dates to around 2,000BC, however construction continued through to as late as 300BC. What sets Karnak Temple apart from other temples in Egypt is the sheer size of it.

The Great Hypostyle Hall alone contains 134 intricately carved ornate columns covering an area of 5,000 m2.

Although the Temple of Amun is the only part open to the public, the original site at Thebes stretched over 3km and comprised of more than 25 temples.

Find Mummies in the Valley of the Kings

Hidden in the hills on the east bank of the river at Luxor lies the famous Valley of the Kings.

Burial place of the Pharaoh's, to date over 60 tombs have been discovered each marking the final resting place of one of the once rich and powerful rulers of ancient Egypt .

Upon the death of a Pharaoh, their body would be mummified and placed in an ornate sarcophagus.

It would then be buried deep in the ground, along with possessions that would be needed for the afterlife, which often included vast treasures of gold and jewels.

Over the years most of the hidden tombs have been discovered and looted by tomb robbers.

The most famous undiscovered tomb of king Tutankhamun was finally uncovered in the early twentieth century and revealed a vast array of priceless treasures.

Although the treasures are long gone, many of the tombs today have been restored and still have beautifully painted walls and ceilings The original stone sarcophagus are often on display along with other artifacts, including the mummified body of Tutankhamun.

Discover King Ramses Temple at Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel temple was constructed more than 3,200 years ago by pharaoh Ramses II.

It is in fact two temples, one dedicated to the Pharaoh himself and the other to his queen Nefertari.

The main temple has four massive, seated statues of King Ramses II and the smaller temple has six standing statues of both him and Queen Nefertari.

Cut into a rock face overlooking Lake Nasser , Abu Simbel is not only a testament to the skill and workmanship of the ancient Egyptian's, but also to the ingenuity and determination of modern engineers.

During the creation of Lake Nasser in the south of Egypt, the Temple of Abu Simbel was completely deconstructed and then reconstructed at a new location.

This was done to save it from being submerged in the newly created lake. The new location is about 200 metres further inland and 65 metres higher up than the original.

Egypt sees 4% growth in incoming tourist traffic

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa announced that the first quarter of 2024 witnessed a positive growth in incoming tourist traffic to Egypt by three-to-four percent compared to the first quarter of 2023 – which was already a record year for tourism in Egypt.

Issa expressed optimism that there will further growth in the near future, during a meeting with the Board of Directors of the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion on Wednesday.

The Supreme Council of Antiquities is currently witnessing financial reforms, the minister explained in order to increase the volume of the Council’s revenues, increasing its ability to carry out its role as a scientific institution and owner and operator of antiquities.

This will also aid in financing development and restoration projects providing the expenditure that archaeological sites and museums deserve, he added.

Issa said that there will be further developments in the near future regarding the tourism experience in some archaeological sites and museums, including Giza Pyramids area, Saqqara archaeological area, the Citadel of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, as part of the Cairo City Break initiative.

The meeting also discussed policies to stimulate aviation in light of the implementation of the National Tourism Strategy in Egypt, which will aid in increasing airline seats coming to Egypt to accommodate the targeted tourist numbers.

The meeting also reviewed the results of the additional stimulus package (The Booster Campaign) which the ministry announced for airline companies as part of the current aviation stimulus program due to the increased risks flights to Egypt face as a result of geopolitical events in the region.

And a proposal submitted to extend the aviation incentive program scheduled to end this April was discussed, with some amendments being made to it.

This proposal was approved and will be presented to the Board of Directors of the Tourism and Antiquities Support Fund.

Egypt welcomes 15 million tourists in 2023 

Dubai - Egypt will showcase its commitment to enhancing the tourist experience and attracting new visitors from the UAE, GCC, and globally by highlighting the country’s tourism potential, forthcoming projects, and future initiatives at Arabian Travel Market 2024 (ATM) in Dubai as it looks to build on the record 15 million tourists welcomed in 2023.

Dr. Ghada Shalaby, Egypt’s Vice Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Tourism Affairs, said: “Egypt is gearing up to attract a wide range of travelers based on its commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings. The Ministry has worked to unveil a group of new products that meet the evolving preferences of travelers, from health tourism to meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions tourism, all the way to the innovative Umrah Plus product and the attractive Cairo City Break program.”

Dr. Ghada noted that cooperation lies at the heart of Egypt's tourism strategy. By strengthening partnerships between tourism entities in Egypt, the Far East, and GGC countries, among other Arab countries, the Ministry aims to combine efforts in promoting Egyptian destinations and ensuring unparalleled experiences for visitors.

Through collaborative endeavors, the tourism sector is ready to flourish and grow.

From enhancing transportation networks to enhancing airport facilities and expanding railway systems, significant investments are being made to improve accessibility and connectivity across the country. These initiatives play an essential role in facilitating smooth travel experiences for visitors to Egypt, said Dr Ghada

Amr El-Kady, CEO, of the Egyptian Tourism Authority, mentioned that Egypt is witnessing a qualitative shift in its approach to tourism, as by embracing the dynamism of the private sector, the country is embarking on a journey of liberation and promoting an enabling environment for investment and innovation in the travel sector. From this standpoint, the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai constitutes an essential platform to complete these efforts and raise its status at this level.”

Al-Kady pointed out that the Egyptian Tourism Authority is taking advanced steps to enhance customer experience at archaeological sites. A prime example of this is the opening of the new visitor center, planned as part of the upcoming transformation of the Giza Pyramids in a few weeks.

Egypt's tourism sector continues to chart a path of growth and resilience. After a record-breaking year in 2023, with 15 million visitors flocking to its shores, compared to 4.9 million in 2021, further expansion is expected in 2024. With a firm focus on enhancing visitor experiences, strengthening partnerships, and investing in... Infrastructure, Egypt is well-positioned to keep its economy on an upward trajectory in the tourism landscape.

The newly launched Cairo City Break program will reshape the capital's appeal by promoting Cairo as a long weekend destination. Egypt presents the emerging destination of Ras El Hekma – a relaxing haven along the picturesque Egyptian coastline with ancient monuments and cultural attractions.

Eco-friendly Hop-on Hop-off buses will be launched, enhancing the accessibility and sustainability of the tourism experience. A new road will be opened later this year to reduce the journey time from Luxor to Hurghada from 5.5 to 4 hours.

A new reform of the tourism industry has been introduced, which includes steps towards deregulation and liberalization. Over the past seven years, Egypt has allocated a staggering 22% of its GDP to comprehensive infrastructure development. The state aims to double the capacity of hotel rooms in the country, which will increase from 220 to 245 room nights during the next five years.
