Salt-N-Pepa, Vanilla Ice to Headline ‘I Love the ’90s’ Tour

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

Nineties hip-hop and R&B stars are coming together for a packed tour, as the inaugural “I Love the ’90s Tour” kicks off this April and runs through October.

Vanilla Ice , Coolio , Kid ‘N Play and Salt-N-Pepa are just a few of the acts set to play many of their Nineties hits on the tour. Other artists include Biz Markie , Color Me Badd, All-4-One, Rob Base, Tone Loc, Young MC and Kool Moe Dee, the latter recently appearing on Macklemore’s 2015 single “ Downtown .”

The trek technically kicked off with a few shows this spring, but popular demand has turned it into a nationwide trek. “It feels like you’re taking people back to a time in their lives that they really enjoyed,” Cheryl “Salt” James of Salt-N-Pepa explained to USA Today about the tour’s appeal. “It’s just one big Nineties party.”

The “I Love the ’90s Tour” falls in line with many other nostalgic throwbacks to past decades. In February, iHeartMedia hosted the iHeart80s Party in Los Angeles. Culture Club, Billy Idol, and Rick Springfield were among the acts to perform at the show. Last fall, a Nineties-themed festival hit Brooklyn with special guests Pauly Shore, Lisa Loeb and Naughty by Nature.

I Love The 90s: Vanilla Ice at Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre

Robert Matthew Van Winkle a.k.a Vanilla Ice is recognized as the prime mover in diversifying hip hop by introducing it to a mainstream white audience. In 1990, Vanilla Ice released his re-worked debut album "To the Extreme" which became the fastest-selling hip hop album of all time and contained Ice's best-known hits: "Ice Ice Baby" and a cover of "Play That Funky Music". "Ice Ice Baby" was the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts.

"Ice Ice Baby" was such a huge explosive hit that brought Van Winkle fame and success at supersonic speeds all over the world. He branched out into the film industry, making an appearance in the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, and also cast the lead role in the movie Cool as Ice in April 1991.

“Ice Ice Baby" may have had a resurgence of interest in social media platforms like Tiktok, but nothing beats hip-hoppin' and groovin' to the fun-filled sounds of the 90s. “Ice is back, and so is the I Love the ’90s Tour,” Vanilla Ice says in a statement. “We’re gonna be hitting your town live and in person this summer, so you better get in where you fit in and get back to the ’90s where the party never stopped!”

90s kids and all generations of party people are welcome and have a blast at the "I Love the ’90s Tour,” so book your tickets now!

I Love the 90's Tour will be coming to the CHS Field on  Friday, June 3, 2022,  with legendary artists Vanilla Ice, Tone Loc, Rob Base, Young MC and Color Me Badd.

The Presale starts on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 10am CT.  Tickets will go on sale to the public Friday, March 25, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. CT at www.Ilovethe90stour.com or at the St. Paul Saints box office.

"Ice is back, and so is The I Love the 90's Tour... FINALLY" confirms the tour's headliner , Vanilla Ice .  "We've been waiting what seems like forever for the chance to hit your town LIVE and IN PERSON, and I know you have, too - so you better get in where you fit in and get back to the 90's where the party never stops!"

"What better way to celebrate 30 Years of Fun with the St. Paul Saints than to host a concert featuring some of the most entertaining performers from 30 years ago,” said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. “Music fans will be able to enjoy some of the greatest party anthems from the late 80's and early 90's at the best party venue in the Twin Cities."

“We have never been more excited to get back to normal… and there’s no better way than to party like we did in the 90s.  Life was easier, less stress, more fun.  Live music has been missed dearly the last two summers, but it’s time to get out and let loose,” Ballpark Music Owner and President Brandon Bissell said. “There isn’t a better place to do it than at the brand new CHS Field.  The stadium was built for baseball, but we are going to turn it into a wild concert venue for the night!  We all deserve this!”

This is the latest edition of the blockbuster throwback tour which launched in 2016 and was "an instant hit", according to Rolling Stone .  You’ve seen them take over the Today Show 2 years in a row, join Pitbull's New Year’s Eve on Fox, and blow the roof off Good Morning America . With over 300 tour dates since its launch, it continues to be a fan favorite time and time again, landing it on Pollstar’s Top-Grossing Tours list ahead of some of today’s biggest acts the year it debuted. “Whether you are a '90s kid that wants to relive the music of your youth or a music junkie that wants to experience the iconic era, this …  immersive dance party is the perfect event for you,” raves E Online .
