Troubleshooting, how to import saved passwords from safari to chrome.

How to Import Saved Passwords from Safari to Chrome

Planning to switch to Google Chrome as your preferred web browser on your Mac? If so, you’ll be relieved to know that importing your saved passwords from Safari to Chrome is a lot easier than you think.

Safari is the default web browser on macOS devices, similar to how Microsoft Edge is on Windows. Most people hesitate to switch to a different browser, just because they’re worried about losing all their browsing data. However, that’s not an issue at all anymore considering most web browsers today allow you to import bookmarks, saved passwords, autofill data, etc. in a matter of seconds.

Interested in learning how you can seamlessly make the switch? Look no further, because in this article, we’ll be discussing exactly how you can import saved passwords from Safari to Google Chrome.

Importing browsing data such as bookmarks, saved passwords, autofill information, etc. is a fairly simple and straightforward procedure in Google Chrome. Make sure you’ve installed the latest version of Chrome on your Mac before you go ahead with the procedure.

Google Chrome Icon

That’s pretty much all there is to it. Now you know how to import saved passwords from Safari to Google Chrome.

Although we were focusing on saved passwords in this article, you can use the same procedure to import other browsing data such as favorites, bookmarks, autofill data, search history and more from Safari. Just make sure to check the respective boxes while importing and you’re set.

One of the many reasons why Safari users might want to switch to Google Chrome is because of the robust password manager feature that’s baked into the web browser. If you’re switching to Firefox instead, you won’t be able to automatically import your Safari passwords, since Firefox lacks the Keychain integration that Chrome has.

We hope you were able to import your saved passwords from Safari to Chrome without any issues. What do you think about the automatic import feature that’s available on most modern-day web browsers? Make sure to share your thoughts and experience in the comments section down below.

Please delete this page. It’s just plain wrong information.

This simply doesn’t work. I have the latest version of chrome and bookmarks/favorites is the only option that comes up to import. Not passwords.

I just imported Bookmarks from Safari to Chrome, through Firefox: I imported Safari to Firefox, and then Firefox to Chrome:

Open FireFox -> Setting -> Privacy & Security -> Scroll down to “Saved Logins” under Logins and Password -> clicked on the 3 dots on the upper right “. . .” and then “Import from Another Browser” and was able to select Safari.

That said, it got the bookmarks to Chrome but didn’t bring the saved logins or any autofill with it.

Unfortunately, your Windows screenshots do not reflect the Mac experience. The only way to get Safari bookmarks into Chrome is to first export them to a location on your computer (such as the Desktop) and them import them (as an HTML file) into Chrome. Currently there is no way to import passwords or other Safari functionality into Chrome on a Mac. (In both Catalina and Big Sur)

In addition one of your screenshots mistakenly highlights “Downloads” instead of “Bookmarks”.

If you’re going to provide instructions please verify them before posting.

I don’t have Safari as an option, only FireFox. How do we solve that?

Didn’t work for me. The “Import bookmarks and settings” window did not list Safari as a selection option.

Safari wasn’t listed for me either.

Safari is not a choice under “import bookmarks and settings” – only Firefox was when I tried (and all of my saved passwords are in Safari) – This does not work :(

The imported bookmarks go into a folder “imported from Safari.” I delete all the Chrome bookmarks, but still have my imported bookmarks all in this new subfolder.

I can obviously rename that to “Safari’ or “imported” or whatever. I cannot find how to REPLACE this into the main bookmark bar though. That is, I really want the Chrome bookmark Favorites bar to look like the existing Safari Favorites bar.

What am I missing???

How to import your passwords to Chrome and the Google Password Manager

What was once a long and kludgy process is now quick and simple..

If you’re unhappy with your current password manager and have decided to make a move , you may be tempted to simply go with the password manager that comes with your browser or operating system. It’s certainly an easy solution and a reasonable one, depending on your point of view. Until recently, third-party password managers were known to be more secure, but Apple and Google have been working to make their built-in password managers more secure , while Microsoft has not only got one as part of its Edge browser but has added one to its authenticator app .

One way, however, that these built-in password managers haven’t stood up to their independent competitors is how tricky it was to get preexisting passwords into their systems. That, however, may be changing.

If you tend to hang out in the Google ecosystem and / or you have an Android mobile device, that means you can be using the Google Password Manager to store and sync your passwords via the Chrome browser. Until recently, though, Google Chrome made it extremely difficult to import passwords from a CSV file. Now, however, it’s quite simple .

Here’s what you do.

  • How to import your passwords to Apple’s iCloud Keychain via Safari
  • In Chrome, select the three dots in the upper right corner and select Settings .
  • Go to Autofill (in the left menu) > Password Manager .
  • Look for Saved Passwords and select the three dots to the right of its Add button.
  • Select Import passwords > Select file and find your CSV file. Click on Open .
  • You will get a report on any passwords that did not import.

Settings page showing password manager settings.

What you had to do before

This is a lot easier than the previous workarounds that I tried in order to import a CSV file into Chrome. Just for the sake of historical interest, here’s what you used to have to do in order to get your passwords into Chrome’s password manager:

The only way to do it that I could find was to try to enable a disabled Chrome feature that allows you to import passwords. After searching online, I found several methods to enable it, depending on which version of Chrome you’re running. I am currently running version 88, and while I was able to use the following method to add the import command to Chrome ( thank you to Guiding Tech for pointing me toward this possible solution), my copy of Chrome was never able to actually import the CSV file I had downloaded from LastPass.

Be that as it may, here is the process I used. I’ll let you know how I finally managed to get my passwords into Chrome right afterward.

  • In Chrome’s top address bar, type in chrome://flags. This will bring you to the Experiments page.
  • In the “Search flags” box on top, type in “password import.” (Probably just typing “password” will be enough.)

In Chrome’s Experiments page, you can enable the Import feature

  • Find “Password import” and click on the drop-down menu on the left (it will probably be labeled “Default”). Select “Enabled.”
  • Select “Relaunch.”

saved passwords from safari to chrome

  • Now that you’ve added the import function, go to your Chrome Settings (by selecting the three dots in the upper right corner and choosing “Settings”).
  • Find “Passwords” (which will be in the “Autofill” category) and click on the arrow on the right.
  • Look for “Saved Passwords” and click on the three dots on the right. You should see a drop-down that includes the selection “Import.”

Chrome should now have an Import selection under Saved Passwords

  • Click on “Import.” You’ll be able to select a CSV file from your file manager — and, hopefully, import your passwords.

If that works for you — great! If not, then there is a last desperate way to get your passwords into Chrome, which is the one that finally worked for me.

  • Download Firefox (if you don’t have it already) and start it up.
  • Click on the three lines in the upper right corner and select “Logins and Passwords.”
  • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Import from a File.”
  • Select your CSV file and import it.

Firefox has no qualms about importing a CSV password file

Now that your passwords are in Firefox, you can transfer them easily to Chrome:

  • In Chrome, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and go to “Bookmarks” > “Import Bookmarks and Settings.”
  • Select Mozilla Firefox in the drop-down menu, select “Passwords” (and “Autofill form data” if you had any), and click on “Import.”

Safari Password Manager: How to save, view and manage passwords in Apple's browser

Thanks to iCloud Keychain, you can save browser username and password combinations.

Apple Safari logo

  • Quick steps

Tools and Requirements

Step by step guide to using the safari password manager, final thoughts.

You probably already know about iCloud if you're using at least one Apple device. The cloud storage and synchronization service allows it to store and access content across multiple devices, including Mac, iPhone, iPad, and more.  These include files and information like documents, photos, music, video, and contacts.

Apple's iCloud service is also at the heart of the iCloud Keychain , where you can store website usernames/passwords, among other items. In this how-to, we're concentrating on how to add, edit, and delete Safari password content. Similar tools are available on other browsers like Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox .

  • You should also consider the best browsers and best secure browsers .

Steps for saving, viewing and managing passwords

  • Before you can save any username/password combinations, you must first be sure to have an Apple ID or iCloud account.
  • From there, you can begin adding usernames and passwords for websites you frequent.
  • You can also take advantage of Apple's new passkey feature.
  • Safari is only available on Apple devices such as Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

1. Go into the manager

Safari passwords

To get started, you must first create an Apple ID . The username/password combinate is usable across all Apple devices to log into iCloud.com. You can proceed once you have an Apple ID and are logged into your device.

On Mac, the Safari password manager is located by choosing Safari on the menu bar at the top left of your Mac. From there, click Settings from the pull-down menu.

Next, click on the Passwords option at the top. Input your password as needed.

2. Adjust existing password settings

Safari change password

You can adjust password information in the iCloud Keychain directly from Safari. To get started, go into the Passwords section of Mac Settings (see above) and log in as necessary. Then, use the search box on the left side of the display to find the password information you wish to change. Click Edit .

You can change the username and password for a website and add notes when applicable. After making a change, click Save .

Click Delete Password to delete the password information.

Thanks to iCloud, any changes you make here will also be reflected in other Apple devices that use your Apple ID.

4. Using Autofill in Safari

Safari password

With AutoFill, you can fill in your previously saved usernames and website passwords. The tool is also a great way to add a new username/password combination for the first time and to create a strong password.

You will see AutoFill pop up when a website asks you to create a password.

You will see an Autofill prompt In Safari when it's time to use or create a password.

Click the AutoFill Key button, then choose Suggest New Password . For optimal security, you should use the suggested strong password. However, if you choose not to use the suggested password, you can easily select the password field, click “ Don’t Use ,” and enter your preferred password.

From there, enter the rest of the required information to create the website account.

Why use a separate password manager instead of a browser?

While most web browsers have their own password management feature, except for Safari which incorporates it into iCloud Keychain, in-browser password managers have limitations. They can only be used with one specific browser and cannot be accessed from other browsers. On the other hand, standalone password managers are compatible with any browser on your device, making them a more versatile option. Moreover, it is important to consider security when choosing a password manager. Browsers are not updated as frequently as standalone password managers, which can pose a security risk in case of a breach.

Does Safari have a built-in VPN?

Like many other browsers, Safari does not come with a pre-installed VPN. However, several reliable third-party VPNs like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and SurfShark can easily be integrated with Safari. With a VPN, you can significantly boost the security and privacy of your online activities.

Are browser password managers safe?

To guarantee the safety of your passwords, using browser password managers like Safari with encryption is a great first step. However, there are additional measures you can take to further enhance your protection. It is highly recommended to create a strong and secure master password. The newest optional feature in Microsoft Edge mandates that you input your master password before making any changes to the password manager, thereby adding an extra layer of security. Regularly backing up your password manager is also a wise precaution in case of loss or theft. Another crucial step is creating a Firefox profile, allowing content synchronization across devices. This ensures that any changes made on your computer are reflected on your mobile device and vice versa.

What is iCloud Keychain?

iCloud Keychain is a highly reliable password manager that securely stores sensitive information such as passwords and credit card details in an online vault as part of Apple’s iCloud suite of services. Users can easily access their stored data by simply logging in to the same iCloud account on any Apple device. Thanks to the end-to-end encryption feature, user data is protected and can only be accessed by the user, even in the unlikely event of an iCloud account breach. Furthermore, the two-factor authentication feature provides an extra layer of security to user accounts, ensuring that they remain safe and secure at all times.

What are Apple Passkeys?

Apple Passkeys hope to eliminate the need for passwords eventually. This authentication method adheres to industry standards and guarantees improved security features while streamlining the login experience.

Passkeys create a unique cryptographic key pair for every website or application you use. The website or app stores the public key while the private one remains on your device. When you log in, your device produces a cryptographic signature using the private key. The website or application can then authenticate your identity by verifying this signature. With Passkeys, you can rest assured that your online security is in good hands.

Like passwords, passkeys are kept in Apple's iCloud Keychain.

The built-in Safari password manager, part of the iCloud Keychain, makes tracking website usernames and passwords easier. Better still, those items carry over to other Apple devices, including iPhone and iPad. In the coming years, Apple hopes to eliminate the need for passwords and replace them with more secure passkeys. However, username and password combinations remain the most popular choice for website authentication.

Once you have downloaded the browser onto your device, all you will need to do is ensure that the Save Passwords and Autofill features are enabled. If they are, Google Chrome will automatically prompt you to save your password and autofill your logins for you on most websites.

Open Google Chrome, then click on the icon with three vertical dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Select “Settings” from the drop-down menu. From the list that populates on the left side of the screen, select “Autofill” and then click “Password Manager.” Toggle the switch next to “Offer to save passwords.” If you want Chrome to automatically sign you in to sites with saved login information, you can also toggle the “Auto Sign-in” switch. For new sites or accounts, Chrome will prompt you to “Save” or “Never” (save) your passwords.

To manage saved passwords, follow the instructions above and your saved passwords will appear below the toggle switches. Click the icon with three vertical dots next to the password you’d like to manage and you will be able to copy, edit or remove that password. You can also manage a saved password on the login screen for that site by clicking on the key icon to the right of the address bar.

Open Google Chrome, then click on your profile icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Select “Autofill” and then toggle the switch next to “Offer to save passwords.” If you want Chrome to automatically sign you in to sites with saved login information, you can also toggle the “Auto Sign-in” switch. If you go to log in on a new site, Chrome will create a pop-up where you can choose between “Save” or “Never” (save) your passwords.

These instructions may vary with the version of Chrome you run or your OS. Instead of selecting “Autofill,” you may need to look for a key icon and access Chrome’s password manager using this button.

To manage saved passwords, follow the instructions above and your saved passwords will appear below the toggle switches. Click the icon with three vertical dots next to the password you’d like to manage and you will be able to copy, edit or remove that password. You can also manage a saved password directly from a site’s login screen by clicking on the key icon to the right of the address bar.

On an iPhone/iPad

Open the Google Chrome browser and tap the icon with three horizontal dots at the bottom right of your screen. Then select the key icon labelled “Password Manager” and use the toggle next to “Offer To Save Passwords.” If you go to log in on a new site, Chrome will create a pop-up where you can select “Save” or exit out of the prompt.

Passwords can be managed by following the steps above and selecting the site you wish to manage from the list. Tap “Edit” in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Chrome will require your passcode or Touch/Face ID to edit passwords.

When logging in to an account, Google Chrome will display any saved information above the keyboard after you select the login field. It will require your passcode or Touch/Face ID to authorize the autofill.

On an Android Device

Open the Google Chrome browser and tap the icon with three vertical dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen. From there, select “Settings,” then “Passwords.” Then you can toggle “Offer to save passwords.” If you want Chrome to automatically sign you in to sites with saved login information, you can also toggle the “Auto Sign-in” switch. If you go to log in on a new site, Chrome will create a pop-up where you can select “Save” or exit the prompt.

Passwords can be managed on the “Password Manager” screen. Passwords can be copied, deleted, edited or exported from this screen.

Chrome will automatically prompt you to select a saved password on a known site. If you have more than one login saved for that site, you can place your cursor in the username field and select the login you wish to use from the list that appears. Chrome may prompt you to re-enter your passcode to fill in saved passwords.

If you’ve accidentally selected “Never” when prompted to save your password in Google Chrome, you likely want to fix your mistake. Luckily, the process is easy: All you need to do is use the instructions above to access the password manager. Scroll down past all of your saved passwords and you will find a list labelled “Never Saved.” You will be able to remove sites from this list either by clicking the “X” to the right of the site name or selecting the site, selecting “Edit” and then “Delete,” or by tapping the trash can icon at the top of the screen.

The built-in Google Chrome password manager is a free and convenient option for storing your various passwords, but it does have some drawbacks compared to third-party password managers that you should be aware of.

Security and Encryption

The Google Chrome password manager does not offer zero-knowledge encryption or two-factor authentication like many stand-alone password managers do. These measures offer you increased security and privacy and present major reasons to consider using a third-party password manager.

Unable To Share Saved Passwords With Other Browsers

What happens on Google Chrome stays on Google Chrome: Passwords saved while using Chrome will not transfer to other browsers. Users who choose to store passwords in Chrome would need to use Chrome on all devices in order to have their passwords saved and available everywhere.

No Password Sharing

Many third-party password managers allow you to share your passwords with other trusted users. Google Chrome does not offer this feature, so you may occasionally have difficulty accessing shared accounts if another user changes the password.

Third-party password managers may include added features that the Google Chrome password manager simply can’t match. Potential benefits of choosing a third-party password manager include zero-knowledge encryption, two-factor authentication, hardware security keys, one-time passwords, secure vaults for a wider variety of data and documents, availability of all app functions on every browser and the ability to share passwords with other users.

A third-party password manager may be useful if you’re seeking extra security, a wider variety of features, more secure storage categories and protection on non-Chrome browsers. Some of our top picks include , Dashlane, NordPass and Bitwarden. Before purchasing a password manager, make sure the service is compatible with your operating system.

Bottom Line

Despite its drawbacks, the Google Chrome password manager is a great option for those looking for a free, built-in feature to store passwords quickly and easily. This password manager is best for those who exclusively use the Google Chrome browser on all devices. We would recommend investigating third-party password managers if zero-knowledge encryption, two-factor authentication or password sharing are a priority for you.

Canadian specific editing and research by Anna Rey.

Does Chrome have a built-in password manager?

Yes, Google Chrome has a password manager browser extension that allows you to save and manage passwords and can autofill login information. It is free and easy to use, though it lacks certain security measures and features when compared to third-party password managers.

Should I let Google Chrome save my passwords?

The Chrome password manager is generally considered safe to use, though it does not come with extra security measures such as two-factor authentication or zero-knowledge encryption. We recommend researching the security features of the system if you have concerns.

How to import Chrome passwords to Safari on iPhone and Mac

In this tutorial, we will help you bring your website login details like email addresses, usernames, and passwords saved in Google Chrome to Safari.

Import Google Chrome passwords to Safari

Your passwords are probably saved to Google Password Manager if you have been using Chrome as your default browser on your Mac , iPhone, iPad, Windows PC, or Android phone.

Now, if you decide to switch to Safari, then you can either import the saved account passwords from Chrome to Safari or learn how to use Google Password Manager while auto-filling saved passwords on your Apple device. We will help you with both methods.

Import Chrome passwords to Safari on iPhone and iPad

You have two options.

Method 1: Use your Mac

There is no official way to import passwords saved in Chrome or Firefox to Safari on iPhone or iPad on iOS 17 or earlier. You won’t find such an option in Safari settings or the Passwords section of the Settings app.

The only way and the best way is to import your Chrome passwords to Safari using your Mac, and they will automatically sync to your iPhone and iPad via iCloud Keychain . It’s safe, easy, fast, and secure. We’ve explained it under the Mac section below.

Method 2: Set Chrome to autofill passwords

This is another excellent option if you don’t have a Mac or want to use Chrome and Safari browsers simultaneously.

You can set Chrome’s Google Password Manager to autofill your saved passwords in Safari and other iOS apps. It can be used along with or instead of iCloud Keychain.

Caution: Don’t try third-party apps!

If you don’t have a Mac, you’re out of luck and can’t use the first method. In desperation, you may come across third-party services that claim to help copy your Chrome passwords to Safari. I strongly suggest you never use these apps and services because of the severe security costs attached to them. You don’t want an obscure third party coming between you and your sensitive passwords.

Import Chrome passwords to Safari on Mac

After you follow one of the three methods below, your imported passwords will upload to iCloud Keychain and sync to all your Apple devices, including iPhone and iPad.

Method 1: On a new computer

When you open Safari for the first time on your Mac after using Chrome or Firefox, you will see an option to import bookmarks , browsing history, and passwords. Just use the button there, and you should be good to go.

Method 2: Import manually at any time

If you did not import passwords when you opened Safari for the first time, you can follow these simple steps to get your Chrome passwords in Safari.

1) Quit the Chrome browser if it’s already open.

2) Open Safari on your Mac, and from the top menu bar, click  File  >  Import From and choose  Google Chrome .

Import from Google Chrome to Safari on Mac

3) Make sure the Passwords box stays selected and hit the Import  button.

Select passwords to import from Chrome to Safari

5) Enter your Mac’s password and Allow Safari to use your confidential information stored in “Chrome Safe Storage.” You may have to enter your Mac’s password a second time and hit Allow again. After that, Safari will begin importing your passwords from Chrome.

Allow Safari to use your confidential information stored in Chrome Safe Storage

6) Once importing is done, click OK .

Finished Importing passwords from Google Chrome to Safari

After you have imported the account password from another browser to Safari, go to  Safari Settings  >  Passwords (or System Settings > Passwords ), and you will find the imported passwords here. Unfortunately, there isn’t a recently added section to help you know the passwords that were copied from another browser. But you can manually check and find that the account emails, usernames, and passwords were actually imported over.

Note that your account login details and passwords were copied to Safari and not moved from Chrome to Safari. So, you will still find them when you open Google Password Manager in Chrome or the web.

Method 3: Use a CSV file

Another method to get your Chrome passwords to Safari involves exporting your Chrome passwords as a CSV file and then importing that file into Safari.

This is easy but also comes with significant security concerns. Your usernames, emails, and passwords are mentioned in plain readable text in the CSV file that you download from Google Password Manager. If you are not incredibly careful, this file may get into the wrong hands, get uploaded to cloud services, and be misused. Therefore, you should use the earlier method.

But if you understand the risks and will properly delete the CSV file immediately after importing it to Safari, here’s how to proceed.

1) Open Chrome on your Mac and export its passwords as a CSV file. To do that, visit this direct Chrome link ( chrome://password-manager/settings ) or navigate to Chrome Settings  >  Autofill and passwords > Google Password Manager > Settings .

Now, click the Download file button next to the Export passwords option, use Touch ID or your Mac’s password to authenticate, and Save the CSV file.
