Great scenery, but a little too long.

My husband and I really enjoyed the boat excursion to Misty Fjords. Our captain Keith took us to the beautiful nature. His narrative was very knowledgeable and professional. We had a great experience to see wildlife. We will highly recommend this excursion to our friends!

On Jun 2023

This was an incredible excursion with a very knowledgeable guide. The views here were breathtaking. It s about 1.5-2 hrs from where the cruise ship docs, but well worth the ride. We saw whales and seals and even a deer swimming from one island to another! Sheldon was a great captain who tailored our trip to what we wanted. He knew our time constraints and was able to work to get us back to our cruise ship on time. I would highly recommend Sheldon and the trip to Misty Fjord.

Misty Fjords Boat Tour: My Explorer Cruise Review

Steep cliffs in Misty Fjords National Monument, Alaska

Alaska, known as “The Last Frontier,” boasts some of the most breathtaking natural wonders on the planet. Among its many awe-inspiring destinations, the Misty Fjords National Monument in southeast Alaska stands out as a true gem.

Located 40 miles east of the Ketchikan cruise port, most travelers access it on a port day from their cruise ship. Since large cruise ships can’t access the narrow fjord, you have two options to visit; by air or by sea.

While Misty Fjords flightseeing comes with a high-ticket price, families can enjoy the Misty Fjords boat tour at a reasonable cost.

The Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer Cruise offers a fantastic way to experience this classic fjord. During the excursion, you’ll learn how nature creates these steep fjords and discover the hidden corners of its mist-shrouded landscapes.

Cruise lines offer this port excursion, or you can book independently. Our tour was operated by Allen Marine, who has 45 years of experience, and we cruised on the St. Aquilina ship.

Misty Fjords Tours

  • 🛳️ Misty Fjords Expedition allows you to explore the wilderness on a private charter
  • 🛩️ Misty Fjords Flight Tour gets you to the Misty Fjords National Monument faster, in the comfort of a floatplane

The Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer Overview

The Misty Fjords boat tour is wheelchair accessible and a good choice for those who can’t walk too far. Guests board the large catamaran 300 yards from the Ketchikan dock.

Our 5-1/4 hr. excursion took all of a port day, so we did not have time to walk around the town of Ketchikan afterward. However, if you love the outdoors and want a nature lovers’ tour, this one’s for you.

Misty Fjords' landscapes and a large boat operated by Allen Marine offering tours to the fjord

Some cruise lines sell shorter excursions. However, the shortened itinerary determines how much time you’ll spend exploring the wilderness area.

The two-tiered watercraft has comfortable seating, much like you find on a luxury coach. The spacious heated cabin provided lots of space to move around. If you get a window seat, you’ll enjoy a front-row view to see marine wildlife.

Our tour boat had two outside viewing decks, and the upper deck opens to guests once the craft arrives in Misty Fjords.

Drinks and snacks were provided throughout the tour, but we could not purchase meals or hot food. Since our tour ran from 2:30 pm to 7:45 pm, we carried some of our favorite snacks.

The tour includes a naturalist who talks about the environment and landscapes. The naturalist points out bald eagle nests, waterfalls, and rock formations.

About Misty Fjords National Monument

More than 15,000 years ago, ice covered this area. As the ice retreated, the glaciers carved deep grooves into the landscape, creating the fjord seen today.

The fjords are home to harbor seals, black bears, brown bears, bald eagles, and pigeon guillemots. Everywhere you look, the landscape is dotted with mesmerizing waterfalls.

A series of waterfalls in Misty Fjords National Monument

The exploration of Misty Fjords traces back to the late 18th century when British explorer George Vancouver navigated these remote waters. In 1793, Vancouver and his crew charted the area and marveled at the breathtaking landscapes.

Before Vancouver’s arrival, the area was home to the indigenous Tlingit people and other native groups who had occupied the lands for countless generations.

The Tlingit people developed a deep spiritual and cultural connection to the land, which is still honored and celebrated today.

The Misty Fjords National Monument is a testament to the enduring legacy of the native people and the explorers who marveled at its splendor.

Covering more than two million acres of the Tongass National Forest, the fjord continues to inspire all who visit. As its name suggests, mist often blankets the fjords, creating an ambiance that adds to the landscape’s allure.

The Boarding Process

We boarded a large catamaran close to our ship, the Quantum of the Seas, and we were thankful we didn’t have a take a bus to reach the touring vessel.

St. Aqilina tour boat operated by Allen Marine

While the boat had two levels with comfortable seating, the top upper level filled up fast. That meant the last few guests needed to sit downstairs. The vessel had a maximum capacity of 149, but we cruised with 77 plus the crew of six.

The lower level contained a washroom and an area to get drinks and snacks.

Cruising To Misty Fjords

It takes a two-hour boat tour to reach Misty Fjords, and if I had known that, I’m not honestly sure I would have booked this tour.

In distance, the tour travels 110 nautical miles or 121 miles (202 km) roundtrip. Now, I see the appeal of the more expensive, shorter flightseeing tour.

When leaving Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island, the vessel cruises slowly to adhere to the marine bylaws. Through the Tongass Narrows, you’ll see Pennock Island to your right and the signs of a vibrant fishing industry to the left.

A small island in the Tongass Narrows

On the way, our naturalist pointed out the Saxman Native Village, another popular shore excursion. We saw an active bald eagle’s nest and many eagles resting in the trees, which were easy to spot with their white heads.

While Ketchikan experiences 13 feet of rain each year, we were fortunate to visit on one of the few dry days. The wet weather contributes to thick rainforests in the area. However, with clear skies, and calm seas, we enjoyed the rock formations and landscapes from the outdoor deck.

One of the trip’s highlights was the impressive New Eddystone Rock formation. It juts out of the emerald sea like a sore thumb. Located in the Behm Channel, the 237-foot pillar creates quite a majestic image.

New Eddystone Rock in Behm Channel

The Behm Channel separates Revillagigedo Island from the mainland and offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and emerald-green cliffs that plunge dramatically into the water below.

Keep a keen eye out for wildlife during this part of the journey, as Behm Canal is known to be home to a diverse range of creatures, such as bald eagles, sea lions, and humpback whales.

We took the Misty Fjords excursion during our mid-May Alaska cruise and saw no whales during our 5-1/4-hour journey.

Soon our ship approached Rudyerd Bay, the gateway to Misty Fjords National Monument.

Misty Fjords

As we entered the fjord, I could understand its appeal and the true magnificence of the Misty Fjords began to unfold. While mist often blankets this area, we enjoyed the sheer cliffs with clear skies.

Misty Fjords granite cliffs

The monument is characterized by steep granite rock walls that rise dramatically from the tranquil waters below. Some of these measure a staggering 3,000 feet above sea level.

With high cliffs and abundant rainfall come the cascading waterfalls, one of the most iconic features of the Misty Fjords National Monument.

In mid-May, the higher elevations still had snow. With temperatures beginning to rise, the snow meltwater added to the volume of water in nearby waterfalls. If you visit during a dry spell in the peak of summer, you may not see the cascades we enjoyed.

As we cruised into the fjord, multiple waterfalls were on each side of the vessel. Some were thin strands of angel hair; others gave a powerful display.

A Misty Fjords waterfall

With both the upper and lower deck open for viewing, there was plenty of space to accommodate all guests to get photos. Misty Fjords is one of those places where you can’t capture a bad image.

Thick forests of spruce, western cedar, and hemlock line the fjords and, along with the abundance of moss, create a striking contrast with the granite.

The occasional sound of nature punctuates the serenity of the fjord—water lapping against the vessel’s hull, the distant cry of a bald eagle, or the sound of a waterfall.

With eyes peeled to capture the beauty, a guest next to me spotted a lone mountain goat on a cliff. During our trip, the crew scanned the waters and coastline with binoculars for signs of wildlife. We carried a compact pair too.

The rugged cliffs of the fjords are a prime landscape for mountain goats, and I was surprised we only saw one.

A black bear in Alaska

As we were leaving Misty Fjords, our crew spotted a black bear roaming the shores for food. While we couldn’t get that close, the crew members remarked it was large and healthy for early in the season.

It seemed unconcerned of our presence and went about its business foraging for food.

Food And Drinks Onboard

Guests could enjoy complimentary tea, coffee, and hot chocolate during our tour. The crew also offered chowder and vegetarian chili on the ride back.

Brian tried the chowder and remarked it was good, but I couldn’t try either since they weren’t gluten-free. After the chowder, a sampling of smoked sockeye salmon on a cracker was also offered to the guests.

Brian also took the opportunity to purchase a local stout that came from a brewery in Talkeetna, Alaska.

Trying a stout from Talkeetna, Alaska

As with the outgoing journey, returning to Ketchikan took another two hours. Later in the day, it got relatively cool, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately.

Pros And Cons Of The Misty Fjords Explorer

Having done the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour in Ketchikan (which customers rave about), I tend to compare other excursions to that one.

  • You can explore an area where larger ships can’t go.
  • The tour is accessible to those in wheelchairs or who have limited mobility.
  • No transportation is needed to get to the catamaran.
  • If you’re lucky, you may enjoy whale-watching and other wildlife sightings.
  • At USD 249.99, the tour was over-priced since we spent an hour at Misty Fjords.
  • The tour takes 4 hours to go to and from the fjords.
  • You may not see any wildlife, depending on when you go.
  • If it’s dry, you may not see any waterfalls.

My Thoughts Of The Misty Fjords Boat Tour

Leaving Misty Fjords

Having cruised through Tracy Arm , Endicott Arm, and College Fjord, this tour was a scaled-down version without the glaciers. Although the fjord was picturesque, the travel time to access it was far too long.

While our Ketchikan Misty Fjords tour was over five hours, some cruise lines sell a shortened one of 4-1/2 hours. Should you sail a shortened itinerary, you’ll only spend 30 minutes in the fjord.

We were fortunate to have great weather, although bad weather conditions could make for rough seas and poor visibility.

If you prefer to explore Misty Fjords another way, you can book a Misty Fjords flight with Taquan Air. Floatplane tours are popular in Ketchikan, and with a shortened excursion, you’ll have time to explore picturesque Creek Street, a must-see downtown.

Visitors staying in Ketchikan can arrange kayaking adventures through tour operators. It will include a kayak and drop-off and pick-up in Misty Fjords.

However, taking the Explorer cruise, as we did, was the effortless way to enjoy the Alaskan wilderness.

Cool Cruiser

I’m thinking this looks like a good excursion. If you’ve taken it was it great?

Is this just the boat ride or the boat ride/airplane ride?

I believe it’s just the boat.

I would say 1/3 to 1/4 of the trip is very scenic - where the Misty Fiords National Monument is. The rest is very similar to scenery you would see from the cruise ship. The boat ride is relaxing and they had some food. I thought it was overpriced for what we saw. Though I would not do the flight again and IMO, of all the ports, Ketchikan is my least favorite.

We did see bears and eagles.

The Wilderness Explorer is about 1.5 hours of high speed catamaran passing through a designated "wilderness" area which means the boat must stay a long distance from the shoreline and only 30 minutes in the Misty Fjords.  Bring a book to read or some very powerful binoculars (have fun trying to use them on a bouncing boat) to see the shoreline.

After many visits to Ketchikan, this is my least favorite excursion.

I wasn't thrilled with it either - but I have had some bad excursions in Ketchikan so I can't say it was my least favorite but I have a difficult time recommending it.

My trip was half plane/half boat so I didn't have the exact times of the trip - glad you did.

We did this excursion a few years ago and didn't care for it.  Felt it was overpriced for what we saw.  I agree, the scenery was very similar to what we saw while cruising.

Explore Misty Fjords National Monument , one of nature's most spectacular creations, while cruising in luxury aboard one of the fastest sightseeing vessels in Alaska. The adventure begins as soon as you leave Ketchikan's picturesque harbor, passing colorful floatplanes and fishing boats. Enjoy the service and narrative provided by your crew, and watch for marine and coastal wildlife as you cruise at sea level past the rugged coastlines bordering Revillagigedo Channel.

Voyage into Behm Canal , surrounded by the pristine beauty of Misty Fjords National Monument, described by John Muir as the Yosemite of the North. Along the way, you'll stop to view an active bald eagle nest, a Tlingit pictograph, and New Eddystone Rock -- an immense volcanic spire rising from the emerald sea. Delight in an unhurried exploration of Rudyerd Bay -- an ice-carved masterpiece deep within the Monument. Here, you'll learn the natural history of the fjords, listen to the call of nesting seabirds, and feel the mist of glistening waterfalls while gliding quietly beneath 3,000-foot glacier-sculpted cliffs.

On the cruise back to Ketchikan, enjoy a selection of snacks and beverages while watching for whales, seals, eagles and other wildlife.

You'll also have the opportunity to experience local culture and history presented by a Native storyteller and artist or enjoy a tour-related video presentation.

The content of this tour is identical to Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer. Only guests using a wheelchair can book this tour, as it ensures accessible transportation. Due to the specialized nature of some lift-equipped vehicles, priority is given to guests using a wheelchair and one companion only; additional companions may be required to travel on the transportation provided for Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer. Bookings not marked with an accessibility requirement will be removed from the tour's inventory. Depending on the cruise ship's location, participants may be required to walk up to 300 yards and negotiate a ramp (which can be quite steep at low tide) to embark the tour vessel. Cruise time to reach Misty Fjords National Monument is approximately 90 minutes; time spent cruising within Misty Fjords National Monument is approximately 120 minutes. Tour operates in all weather conditions. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. This tour is accessible by standard-width manual wheelchair, but not low-clearance electric scooters. If wildlife is spotted and extra viewing time is needed, the Tlingit pictograph may be omitted.

Misty Fjords National Monument

A jewel of the inside passage.

The stunning Misty Fjords National Monument is noted for its steep cliff walls, lush vegetation, and array of Southeast Alaska wildlife species. One of its most unique features is New Eddystone Rock, located near the entrance of Rudyerd Bay. This instantly recognizable island consists of basalt that rose from a volcanic vent through fractures in the floor of Behm Canal. As glaciers advanced, they scoured away most of the flow, leaving behind New Eddystone Rock and several other islands.

In 1793, while in search of the Northwest Passage, Captain George Vancouver sailed his ship  Discovery  northeast up Behm Canal. In his journal Vancouver penned, “We saw the remarkable rock resembling a ship under sail. I called it New Eddystone.”

Misty Fjords was designated a National Monument in 1978. The granting of Monument status meant this unique wilderness, along with its ecological, cultural, geological, historical, and scientific value would be protected for generations to come.

Island Discovery

Porto grande, cape verde.

Duration 5 1/2 hrs

Experience the island's natural attractions by hiking through a picturesque valley, swimming in a volcanically formed lagoon, and gazing over the landscape from high atop a mountain.

Depart from the pier in Mindelo, the island's cultural capital, and follow a scenic route inland toward Mato Ingles, a charming village founded by English traders in the 19th century. Here, in the serenity of the beautifully stark countryside, you'll enjoy a hike along a flat path through a rather dry valley. Still, there are some small farms scattered about the valleys, growing crops such as corn, potatoes and beans.

Driving on to the eastern shore, you'll visit Praia Grande, a large crescent-shaped beach. Be sure to note the wonderful contrast between its white sands and the backdrop of black lava mountains. While taking in the spectacle, enjoy a glass of "pontche," a traditional island cocktail made with sugar-cane molasses and "grogue," the national liqueur of Cape Verde. More stunning scenery awaits you at Baia das Gatas, which means Catfish Bay, where you may swim in the sheltered lagoon formed by volcanic eruption centuries ago. Then, linger over a hearty traditional lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Re-boarding your coach, you'll make your way up Monte Verde, a mountainous nature preserve that lies just a few miles east of Mindelo. During a photo stop here, you'll be treated to some amazing panoramic views. As you make your way back to the pier, you'll be able to view more beaches and villages.

Become familiar with the efforts of local fishermen to improve their methods and increase the industry’s sustainability. While following a seasoned fisherman around the Old Port of Marseille, you will learn some of the issues affecting the profession. The challenges include water pollution, climate change, over-fishing and even poachers taking endangered species from no-fishing zones. Fishing nets create another problem, as they are often lost, discarded, or abandoned at sea, yet they still continue to unintentionally trap marine creatures in a practice known as ghost fishing. As the fisherman will explain, using biodegradable nets is just one way the industry can protect the marine environment and improve the profession. Feel free to ask questions about what’s being done to raise awareness of the issues and provide acceptable solutions. As a memento, you will receive a cube of green diver’s soap made with olive oil in an eco-responsible way and wrapped in biodegradable packaging.

HIGHLIGHTS • Discover some of ecological issues that fishermen face and how they are being addressed. • Follow a veteran fisherman around the Old Port for a candid look at the profession. • Receive a bar of diver’s soap made in an eco-friendly way as a memento.

Taste Of Greenland

Qaqortoq, greenland.

Duration 1 1/2 hrs

Heighten your appetite with a walk through Qaqortoq to sample Greenlandic and Inuit cuisine at a local restaurant. You’ll spend about 25 minutes along the immensely scenic route through the heart of South Greenland’s largest city – still a compact, charming place where gardens flourish, colorful historic homes line the streets and public artworks celebrate the region’s rich cultural history. But then, there’s no better way to get a true taste of a culture than by its food. The offerings at this excursion’s designated venue change frequently but typically include traditional Greenlandic and Inuit dishes featuring high-protein meats – a diet meant to sustain early locals through harsh, physically demanding winters. Greenlanders have been whalers for some 4,000 years, so look for a taste of that to be served – perhaps thinly sliced like carpaccio or quick-cooked like veal to seal in its flavor. Lamb is also popular here, raised naturally and allowed to range the upland pastures freely. Other traditional specialties might include dried seal, grilled Arctic char or smoked reindeer. Tasty local crowberries, which look like blueberries, are used liberally in sauces and desserts. No worries; you’ll burn off any excess calories on the walk back to the ship.

• Enjoy a leisurely, scenic walk through Qaqortoq’s downtown – alive with color and charm. • Visit a local restaurant specializing in traditional Greenlandic dishes made from regional ingredients. • Enjoy a tasting likely to include whale meat along with dried seal, smoked reindeer or free-range lamb. • Discover the flavor of Greenland’s answer to blueberries: the crowberry. • Discover the flavor of Greenland’s answer to blueberries: the crowberry. • See a few more sights and shed a few calories on the pleasant walk back to the ship.

• Wear weather-appropriate clothing; include a light jacket or windbreaker. • Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. • Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant as needed.

A dream journey to Alaska evokes images of remarkable scenery, Indigenous cultures, and awe-inspiring wildlife sightings. Sea cliffs and fjords, the hum of glaciers, rock walls jutting 3,000 feet up from the ocean, rainforests, bears, whales, salmon, birds of all feathers, and cool morning mists are only the beginning. Then, there’s also cultural history, from the role of the Aleutian Islands in World War II to the Gold Rush.

Hurtigruten Expeditions sails to parts of Alaska where other ships simply can’t go. And with more included excursions, there’s no question that you’ll experience the genuine Alaskan wilderness while aboard this 18-day expedition cruise .The adventure begins in Vancouver, a dynamic city widely recognized for its world-class restaurants, creative scene, and gorgeous Pacific Northwest setting. From there, you’ll board MS Roald Amundsen , a hybrid-powered expedition ship with a two-story Observation Deck that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor spaces.

The stately vessel provides the perfect vantage point to soak up the scenery or scan for wildlife while sailing along the coast of Alaska via the Aleutian Islands and Misty Fjords. Incredible seal and bird colonies await on Saint Paul and Saint Matthew islands, while black and brown bears flourish in the Kodiak Islands and Katmai National Park. By the time the journey ends in Nome, you will fully and truly understand “the call of the wild.”

The 6 best Alaska cruise shore excursions — from heli-hiking to whale watching

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

There are some cruise destinations — Barcelona, for instance, or Venice — where you really don’t need to sign up for shore excursions . You can just walk off the ship and head to the major attractions on your own.

For the most part, the ports of Alaska aren’t like that.

To get the most out of an Alaska cruise , you’ll want to sign up for a tour in most if not all of the ports you visit. And not just any old tour. You’ll be looking for the best Alaska shore excursions that get you out into the Alaska backcountry.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

In Alaska, many of the biggest “attractions” — breathtaking mountain landscapes, glaciers, fjords, breaching whales and feeding bears, for instance — are related to the Great Outdoors. As a result, many of the best Alaska shore excursions for cruisers are found outside of the towns where ships stop. If you just stay in the towns and explore on your own, you’ll miss a big part of what Alaska is all about.

Picking the best Alaska shore excursions

People who know me know that I love talking about Alaska port towns. This isn’t just because I spent more than two decades writing about Alaska and other cruise destinations for major newspapers. For many years, I was the co-author of Frommer’s “Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call” guide. In researching nearly half a dozen editions of that book, I spent many days exploring each of the major cruise ports in the state. I’ve tried a large number of the shore excursions in places such as Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. I’ve also poked around these towns a lot on my own.

As noted above, my biggest message to anyone planning an Alaska cruise is to get out of the towns . Sign up for something — a hike, a rafting trip, a train ride, a fishing outing — that gets you out into Alaska’s spectacular outdoor settings.

But I also have a few specific, top-line pro tips when you’re thinking about the best Alaska shore excursions:

  • Get up in the air . It’ll be expensive. We’re talking $250 or more per person. But there’s nothing like seeing the grandeur of Alaska from a helicopter or floatplane. The Juneau Icefield, in particular, is a sight to behold. It covers around 1,500 square miles. You can see it on a flightseeing tour from Juneau, with some tours including landings on the ice.
  • Don’t miss the whales. Even if you’re not a big wildlife person, you’ll be mesmerized by the humpback whales of Alaska. They are huge (at up to 52 feet, longer than a Greyhound bus), and there are boat tours that will get you up close to them. The best places to do this are out of Juneau and also Icy Strait Point if your ship stops there.
  • Splurge for a trip to Misty Fjords National Monument . This glacier-carved wilderness area, not far from Ketchikan, is another don’t-miss sight. It’s everything you think of when you think of Alaska: icy blue lakes, waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and glacial valleys. The only way to get there is on a boat or floatplane tour, and they typically start at over $200 a person.

Unfortunately, as you can see from the above, many of the most spectacular excursions in Alaskan ports are expensive. But Alaska is not a place to skimp. Alaska is a place where you may want to budget almost as much per person for your shore excursions as you do for your cabin.

That said, you don’t have to splurge for a big outing at every call. In Juneau, for instance, you can get an outdoor experience with a relatively inexpensive trip to the nearby Mendenhall Glacier. It’s just 12 miles from the cruise ship docks and reachable by bus or taxi. The bus will set you back an astounding $45 per person, round-trip, which I find an intolerable gouge (but … it is what it is). If you have a few people, you’re probably better off with a taxi, which runs around $35 each way. For two or three people traveling together, it’s not all that pricey a trip.

Either way you do it, you’ll find some nice hiking trails around Mendenhall Glacier and a visitor center. There’s a creek there, too, where I’ve sometimes seen salmon running. One time, I even saw a bear. Speaking of which: A bear is something you think you want to see in Alaska until you actually see one. Then you’re just hoping you don’t get eaten.

I should also be clear that the towns themselves aren’t devoid of attractions. While I highly encourage Alaska-bound cruisers to get out into the wilderness, there are plenty of worthwhile things to do in each of the main port towns.

In Juneau, food tours have become popular; think King crab bisque and Alaska salmon. The Alaska State Museum is beautiful and worth a visit. Skagway is like a Gold Rush-themed movie set. You should at least walk its main street (Broadway), with its wooden-board sidewalks. If you’re a craft beer fan, like me , you also might want to sample a Spruce Tip Blonde Ale at the Skagway Brewing Company. It’s made with Sitka spruce tips picked locally in the spring.

In Ketchikan, you should save a few minutes to stroll up Creek Street, along Ketchikan Creek, where you might spot salmon running. It’s the ultimate Alaska selfie spot.

How to book the best Alaska shore excursions

The simplest way to book an Alaska shore excursion is through your cruise line. You check a box on an online form before sailing or while on board, and — poof! — it’s all arranged. They send a ticket to your room, and when you walk off the ship, a tour guide will be waiting for you.

Another way to go is to book directly with a tour operator in one of the ports. Many of the tour operators you’ll find in Alaskan ports are the same tour operators that operate the ship-sponsored excursions. Often, the tours that the local tour operators will sell you are the same tours that the cruise lines are selling you, at the same price . Shopping around isn’t necessarily going to get you anywhere.

Indeed, in some cases, the cruise lines own the tour operators in Alaska ports, or at least a piece of them. For instance, the parent company of Princess Cruises and Holland America  is a part-owner of Skagway’s big attraction, the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.

That said, you can sometimes get discounts by calling a tour operator directly. I’ve had some luck with that over the years. It’s hit or miss.

The 6 best Alaska shore excursions

Below, I’ve listed six of my all-time favorite Alaska shore excursions. These all are tours that you’ll find in the tour lineups at every major cruise line that operates in Alaska. That said, different lines sometimes have different names for these tours — and sometimes different pricing.

For the listings below, I’ve used the tour names and pricing listed in the current tour sheets at Princess, which along with sister line Holland America, is the biggest cruise operator in Alaska.

Dog-sledding and glacier adventure by helicopter

Cost: $669.95 per person

Port where available: Juneau

For those with a hefty bankroll, this might be the ultimate Alaska shore excursion. Combining helicopter flightseeing over the seemingly endless Juneau Icefield with a landing on a glacier for dog sledding, it hits two of Alaska’s most iconic experiences.

It’s also insanely expensive, as I know from firsthand experience. I once took my entire family of five on this excursion, dropping more than $2,000 in the process. That’s a huge chunk of change for an outing that lasts three hours.

But I’ll tell you this: I don’t regret doing it. Not one bit. For starters, the views of the Juneau Icefield as you fly to and from the dog-sledding camp are incredible (assuming the weather cooperates). But the real joy was seeing my three young girls interacting with the teams of Alaskan huskies that live at the camp.

Once you arrive at the camp, you’ll meet the dogs and their mushers, see where they live, get a quick tutorial in mushing, and then head out for a spin around the camp on a dog-pulled sled.

Whale watching and wildlife quest

Cost: $189.95

If it’s Alaska’s famous humpback whales that you want to see, you’ll want to book a whale-watching tour. The waters around Juneau are particularly known for humpback whales — so much so that the operator of this excursion offers a whale-sighting guarantee.

Setting off from the Juneau harbor in a whale-watching boat, you’ll cruise to nearby areas to see not just humpback whales but harbor seals and sea lions, too. You might even spot a killer whale or porpoise.

The boat used for this excursion has both inside and outdoor viewing areas. The trips last about four hours, including transfer time from your cruise ship to the whale-watching boat.

Related: The ultimate list of Alaska cruise tips

Note that if you have a big enough group, it sometimes pays to arrange a private boat out of Juneau to take you to see humpback whales. Many lines offer a private boat charter for whale watching as a tour option, or you can arrange one through a local company.

Klondike rock climbing and rappelling

Cost: $119.95

Port where available: Skagway

If you’re like me, you may be a little terrified at the idea of climbing the sheer face of a rock cliff. But don’t let that scare you away from this 3 1/4-hour tour. It’s a hoot.

Experienced climbing guides will meet you at your ship and drive you up the Klondike Highway to an area of granite cliffs that’s the perfect playground for beginner and more seasoned climbers alike. Upon arrival, the guides provide you with all the gear you need — climbing shoes, helmets and harnesses — for a safe scramble up a 70-foot-high wall. They’ll also offer plenty of instruction (and encouragement) plus a snack of trail mix and hot chocolate.

If it all sounds a bit daunting, know that you don’t need any experience at climbing to do it; I sure didn’t have any when I tried it, nor did my young daughters, who absolutely loved it. There are multiple routes up the cliffs, some perfect for beginners. After making it to the top, you’ll rappel back down — an entirely different kind of thrill.

White Pass & Yukon Route Railway ride

Cost: $149.95

Call it the iconic attraction of Skagway, Alaska. A ride into the mountains on this narrow-gauge railroad is the tour everybody takes when visiting the Gold Rush town-turned-tourist hub. And for good reason. It offers an easy way to get deep into the Great Alaskan Outdoors.

Truth be told, I’m a fan of more active excursions. But for someone who isn’t going to hike, bike, horseback ride or raft their way through the wilderness around Skagway (there are tours for all of those things, too), a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway is one of the best ways to get a glimpse of the area’s classic Alaskan scenery.

Related: 13 things you should do before every cruise

From the comfort of a vintage rail car, you’ll get stunning views of mountains, gorges, glacial rivers and waterfalls as you climb nearly 3,000 feet to the summit of White Pass — the headwaters to the mighty Yukon River. Designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, the 20-mile route is a marvel in its own right, with improbably steep grades at times and segments that pass over soaring wooden trestles and around tight, cliff-hanging curves.

Heli-hike and rail adventure

Cost: $399.95

This is another tour with a sky-high cost. But, in my opinion, it’s well worth the money. Indeed, it’s one of my all-time favorite Alaska shore excursions.

The five-hour, Skagway-based outing begins with a transfer from your ship to a nearby helicopter pad, where you’ll find a helicopter waiting to whisk you high into the surrounding Sawtooth Mountain Range.

On a quick flight to your destination — a mountain trail in the Tongass National Forest — you’ll get spectacular views of the mountains and Goat Lake. You’ll land at Glacier Station, a remote mountain helicopter pad alongside the White Pass & Yukon Railway tracks. From there, you’ll set off on a two- to six-mile guided wilderness hike on a trail along the Skagway River. The highlight of the hike: a magnificent view of Laughton Glacier.

Returning to Glacier Station, you’ll end the day with a ride back to Skagway on the White Pass & Yukon Railway, which makes a special stop to pick you up.

Misty Fjords National Monument by seaplane

Cost: $299.95

Port where available: Ketchikan

There’s nothing that says Alaska quite like a trip in a floatplane. And, if you’re going to do a floatplane ride, there’s nowhere better than in Ketchikan. You’ll find a small armada of floatplanes waiting to take you to nearby Misty Fjords National Monument.

Misty Fjords is one of those quintessential Alaska destinations that’s so beautiful you just want to cry. That is, if it’s not too “misty” to see it. It got its name for a reason. The area is often shrouded in clouds and drizzly rain. Ketchikan is known as one of the rainiest places in North America, with over 13 feet of rain each year. So, yeah, bring a rain jacket.

But, also get ready for lovely views of glacier-carved fjords, cliffs and rock walls jutting thousands of feet out of the ocean. The whole thing is covered with temperate rainforests and features huge waterfalls (thanks to all that rain). It’s definitely a sight to see.

Note that there often are two versions of this tour available: One that is about two hours in length and only includes flightseeing and a slightly longer version that includes a water landing within Misty Fjord National Monument.
