Best Transport Options for Getting From Narita Airport to Yokohama

Yokohama is a great base for your Japan trip. Whether you are heading on a cruise, attending a business conference, or just exploring what the port city has to offer , you’ll need to know how to get from Narita Airport to Yokohama.

You may be wondering how far Yokohama is from Narita Airport. While Narita is to the northeast of Tokyo, Yokohama is to the south, just below the capital along the coast. This means you’ll have to travel through Chiba and Tokyo to get there, taking around 1 hour and 40 minutes and 100 km (60 miles).

Surprisingly, that’s not much further than Narita to Tokyo .

Note: All times and prices have been estimated from Narita Airport Terminal 2 to Yokohama Station unless otherwise stated.

Quick comparison of Narita to Yokohama transport options

Pro tip: If you’re traveling with large bags, you can port your luggage from Narita to your accommodation for an easier transfer.

Keisei Skyliner + Ueno-Tokyo Line: Best overall

How much does it cost? ¥ 2,880 (with discounted ticket) How long does it take? 1 hour 30 minutes plus transfer time When is the first/last train? 7:27/22:33 (last train via the Keihin-Tōhoku Line)

yokohama cruise terminal to narita airport

If you want to save money, but not be packed onto a local train, the Keisei Skyliner is a good choice for overall comfort and convenience.

The Keisei Skyliner is a high-speed express train that travels from Narita to Ueno Station (in north Tokyo) in around 48 minutes. A one-way trip costs ¥ 2,570 , but you can book discounted tickets here for ¥ 2,300 . After arriving at Keisei Ueno Station, take a short walk to the main station and transfer to the Ueno-Tokyo Line towards Yokohama Station. This takes an extra 30 minutes and costs ¥ 580 . You can also take the Keihin-Tōhoku Line, but it will take longer.

Keisei Skyaccess: The cheapest

How much does it cost? ¥ 1,730 How long does it take? 1 hour 45 minutes plus transfer time When is the first/last train? 7:12 (earlier trains available with changes)/22:07 (last train via a change at Aoto Station)

yokohama cruise terminal to narita airport

Not to be mistaken for the Keisei Skylliner, the Keisei Skyaccess also has a great connection to Yokohama, but with a little less comfort. Confused? Take a look at our guide on Keisei trains .

The most useful point of the Kesei Skyaccess is its through train service to Yokohama Station. If you time it right, you can jump on a train bound for Haneda Airport and ride the rails till Shinagawa, which will take around 1 hour and 15 minutes and take you through the Asakusa Line. If you are lucky, the train will become a through service towards Yokohama (and take a further 22 minutes), but if it doesn’t, get off and change trains to the Keikyū Main Line heading towards Yokohama.

The Keisei Skyaccess is just a regular commuter train with no reserved seats, so there’s no guarantee you’ll get to sit down. There will be no luggage racks, although you can put baggage on an overhead rail if it is small enough. Also, you can’t book ahead, instead, you’ll need to buy a ticket at the ticket machine or purchase an IC card (basically a pre-loaded transport card). The whole journey takes 1 hour and 45 minutes and costs ¥ 1,730 .

We don’t recommend this, but if you want to save ¥ 100 or so, you can also choose the Kesei Main Line option which stops at every station with a transfer at Ueno — the whole journey is ¥ 1,630 and takes close to 2 hours with transfer time. The same goes for the JR Narita Line, but that does have the added benefit of being direct.

Narita Express: The easiest

How much does it cost? ¥ 4,570 ; free for JR Pass holders How long does it take? 1 hour 27 minutes When is the first/last train? 07:37/21:44

yokohama cruise terminal to narita airport

The Narita Express will save you time, but not money. The journey from Narita Airport Terminal 2 to Yokohama Station (get the train going towards Ofuna) is only 1 hour and 27 minutes, but the price is a steep ¥ 4,570 . You can use the train for free, however, if you have a JR Pass . Remember to reserve your seats in advance as you can’t just walk on. Also, the services to Yokohama only run once an hour (except for 2 services between 5 and 6 p.m.), so you might be twiddling your thumbs on the platform for some time.

The Narita Express is a very comfortable experience, with luggage racks, Wi-Fi, and plenty of space.

Taxis: The most comfortable

How much does it cost? From ¥ 23,300 How long does it take? 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes

Dog in Tokyo Taxi

If you’ve got money to burn, then why not hop in a taxi instead of lugging your suitcases onto public transport. The whole journey from Narita Airport to Yokohama takes somewhere between 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours and 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

You have the choice of ordering a pre-booked taxi or heading straight to the taxi rank once you’ve landed, but the latter is the most expensive way to be bougie and will run you close to ¥ 36,300 . Don’t be surprised if the driver also balks at the idea of Yokohama; Tokyo is usually the preferred and closer choice.

For a little bit of peace of mind for you and your driver, get a pre-booked taxi from around ¥ 23,300 per car. You can book here for Narita to Yokohama Station or the cruise terminal (Osanbashi Pier) .

Buses: The alternative option

How much does it cost? ¥ 3,700 How long does it take? 1 hour and 40 minutes When is the first/last bus? 08:00/20:00

yokohama cruise terminal to narita airport

At the moment, direct buses from the airport to Yokohama are only serviced by the Limousine Bus. It takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from Narita to Yokohama City Air Terminal (depending on traffic) and costs ¥ 3,700 . You can pre-book a seat here , or you can book at the airport counter when you arrive. The buses depart once every hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You are limited to two suitcases per person, so this might not be an option if you are packing a lot.

Late-night options

If you find yourself arriving at Narita late at night or in the early hours of the morning, there aren’t too many options to get to Yokohama. Buses stop at 8 p.m. The last train on the Keisei Skyliner is about 10:30 p.m. and the Keisei Skyaccess and Narita Express are even earlier at around 10 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. respectively.

The saving grace of a late arrival is the taxis, which run all night. But be warned, it is better to pre-book , so you don’t get caught in a long and winding queue at the taxi stand.

Cool Cruiser

There are several sites with information about getting from the airport to the cruise.

I am interested to know what options other people have found - they all look very costly.

We are cruising with Celebrity in November.

I would take the Narita Express from Narita to Yokohama Station and then taxi for the short distance to the cruise port. It is a comfortable train and one of the lower cost options.

Thank you new_cruiser - that is such useful information.

I will google that now.

The above would be the (reliably) fastest way.  A few lower-cost alternatives include

1) taking the bus to the same rail station (or rather, YCAT - Yokohama City Bus Terminal - adjacent to the station) though this is only a little cheaper at JPY3,600 (or JPY 6,000 R/T if returning within 2 weeks).  Taxi as above or taking the metro (or local train) one stop to Sakuragicho (IIRC) where the terminal shuttle busses come and go (bus loop outside the station, across the plaza on the northeast side).

2) Take the cheap bus from Narita to Tokyo (JPY 1,000) which stops at Ginza and Tokyo Central station (IIRC) and take a train to Yokohama from there to above.  Not recommended if travel is during rush hour.  The closest metro stop is Nihon Odori.

There is also a discount on the limousine bus for over 65 year olds.   It is 2000 yen but only if you get off at YCAT.  If going to one of the other stops its full price.

There is also a cheaper train 1940 yen.  it is slower but no transfer anywhere.  Get on the train at narita terminal 1 which is the beginning of the route, find a corner to sit in and stay put til Yokohama.   We take this train every time we cruise.  It is the JR Sobu /Narita line rapid train.

www.hyperdia.com for the information I have copied below.

It hasnt successfully copied but the one I have tried to post departs Narita Term 1 at 9.02 am arrives Yokohama 11.08 am and at approx 30 mins intervals througout the day.

You don't have to fly into Narita - Haneda is much closer to Yokohama.

Many international airlines have flights into Haneda.  Singapore Air has an arrival in the afternoon we are using to go into a more reasonabley priced hotel in Yokohama. There are buses from Haneda to various areas.  We are using the bus direct to Shin Yokohama as have bought a Shinkansen Pass to use before joining the cruise.

Thank you SeaDog-46 - and Tara Jane for all your help.

I was just about to give up on the cruise as direct flight prices  from London rose yesterday by over £300 -stupidly I had delayed purchasing!!!

I have just looked at using Haneda with Cathay Pacific from London via Hong Kong, makes for a longer journey, but when we get there  we will be close to the port. Hotels - most Yokohama hotels have free cancellation only until April.

Can you give me a link or details of the bus please?

For those arriving Narita Airport and going to Yokohama for a pre-cruise stay. The Airport Limousine Bus provide a route directly from the airport to Hotel New Grand in Yokohama as the final stop. This route is not as frequent as the buses going into Tokyo but without the hassle of bus/trains transfers. Cost 3600Y one way. This route makes two stops at the two Haneda terminals, so I would think passengers can catch this bus from there to Yokohama also. We did this on our December cruise out of Yokohama with a night pre-cruise at the Rose Hotel near Chinatown, just about three short blocks from Hotel New Grand. If you have a hotel in this area, this can be a convenient option. Personally, I like to take the limousine bus because I don't have to deal with chugging along the luggage going through train and bus terminals. Just hand over the bags to the porters at the bus stop outside the terminal and pick them up when you get off the bus. Very easy and you can enjoy the scenery along the way. When purchasing bus tickets, make sure you ask for the bus that ends at Hotel New Grand and not YCAT. The staff at the counter may not be aware of this route. I had to tell them I did not want YCAT but Hotel New Grand.

From Rose Hotel, the cost for our taxi to Osanbashi was 700Y.

This has to be the best part of cc- even better than a busy roll call!

The advice is so good. Well, we now have booked flights to Narita at a better price than yesterday, a hotel in Yokohama for the night before our cruise and now great ideas for getting there- only 10 months to go!

To assist you in planning your trip from Narita to Yokohama, you might try searching youtube.  For example, the following is one of many videos on using the Limo Bus.  The cost of a taxi from Yokohama City Air Terminal (YCAT) to a hotel near the port was about US$20 to $25.

  • Rosalind Wong  Time:26-04-2024 I booked Japan Holiday for a car and driver for 7 days to travel out of Tokyo to the north of Honshu. Our group of 8 fitted into the 9- seater comfortably with luggage in April 2024. I planned the itinerary with their rep Lydia, who was always prompt and helpful with her replies and suggestions. She was quick to respond to queries which made the overall planning and booking process easier. The guide and driver Snake-San was wonderful, on time and accommodating. Everything was done professionally and we had a wonderful time. The price of the private tour was very reasonable as well. We were very happy with the service. I would recommend this company.
  • Anthony Lobo  Time:25-02-2024 We used the driving service for our first trip to Japan, and it could not have gone smoother. It was easy to find and meet our driver when we arrived at the airport and when we were picked up to head back to the airport. I would definitely recommend this service for any first timers. Honestly, it took the stress out of traveling to and from the airport and easily accommodated my family of 5. Communication was easy and everyone was extremely helpful/friendly. If you are concerned about using the subway system for the first time, I’d use this driving service to ease your mind.

I've been using sun transfers now for a few years and find them absolutely superb , booked a bus for 8 of us and everyone was highly impressed by the service and efficiency, top quality transfers and very highly recommended.

Booked transfers with car seat included to go from Burgas to Sunny Beach. All went smoothly, car seat was correctly fitted on both occasions, drivers were polite spoke English and arrived on time.

We have used Suntransfers every year for the last 6 years and have never let us down the vehicles have all been good, clean and on time

Mr David C.

I have used this company in France Spain and Italy. Always onetime always clean vehicles and the drivers are always polite and professional.
