Caving in Iceland
Due to its position on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, Iceland is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. Its unique geological conditions make for some awe-inspiring rock formations, both beneath the surface as well as above it. Various tube caves—formed by magma flowing underneath the earth's surface after lava has solidified overhead—can safely be explored through guided excursions year-round.

This Nordic Nation Was Named One of the Safest and Most Peaceful Countries on Earth — How to Plan the Perfect Trip

Makito Umekita/Travel + Leisure
Iceland has become one of the top adventure travel destinations in the world. Though, in many respects, it still feels like a well-guarded secret. Perhaps that's because of its bountiful natural resources, empty roads that wind through the vast volcanic landscape, or the swaths of open land with nothing but wild horses and waterfalls for miles.
Not surprisingly, most travelers come to seek out the stunning natural beauty — from Skógafoss to Thingvellir National Park — and are ready for adventure. To that end, ecologists and environmentalists recommend not eating puffin or whale — sometimes presented to tourists — and following the leave no trace rule. That means taking all of your trash with you and sticking to marked paths to avoid harming the precious ecosystem.
Besides unimaginable scenery, Iceland provides a wealth of local culture. It's known for having warm hospitality and a strong national pride in its history and mythology. Reykjavik, the capital and largest city brims with museums, churches, cozy restaurants, and bars. Icelanders are quite friendly and helpful. It’s the most peaceful country in the world, according to a recent Global Peace Index report, and the crime rate is extremely low. All this makes it an excellent destination for worry-free solo travel.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland
Susmita Baral/Travel + Leisure
A spa lover's dream, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland ranks among the most upscale and relaxing stays in the country. On the pampering side of things, it has an award-winning subterranean spa for mind-body treatments and a private lagoon fed by healing, geothermal waters. Guests also get to enjoy morning yoga, Icelandic coffee time, Michelin-starred dining, and modern suites. "The property is a great choice for the end of an Iceland trip," said Susmita Baral, Travel + Leisure 's travel editor. "Not only is it a great way to relax and indulge in self-care before returning home, but it's also just 20 minutes from the airport."
The Reykjavik Edition
The Reykjavik Edition is a luxury hotel right in the heart of downtown. In addition to a prime location, the newly built property possesses contemporary rooms and a sleek spa with a hammam, steam room, and sauna. Ryan Connolly, owner and a guide for Hidden Iceland , suggests heading up to the rooftop bar in the winter months for cocktails, a lively atmosphere, and a chance to spot the northern lights on a clear night.
Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll
Surrounded by the remote, untouched wilderness of Iceland’s central highlands, the newly minted Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll supplies the ideal home base for adrenaline-fueled adventures. There are special packages for northern lights chasers and snowmobile enthusiasts. After all the thrills, tuck into a cozy sanctuary with neutral decor, sweeping views, and protection from the elements. "Whether you want to explore the outdoors or stay in, this hotel is truly a cozy base," said Baral. "There's even an underground passageway so you can access the restaurant and other parts of the property without stepping foot outside."
Panorama Glass Lodge
If you’ve ever dreamt of glimpsing the northern lights from the comfort of bed, Panorama Glass Lodge in southern Iceland will turn those fantasies into reality. “The tiny cabins in the middle of nowhere are completely made of glass and come with both private hot tubs and saunas to warm up on cold days and nights,” says Kyana Sue Powers , Iceland expert and travel advisor.
Hotel Rangá
Courtesy of Hotel Rangá
Imagine staying at the base of a volcano! Hotel Rangá boasts such a unique location that it's almost always booked at the height of the season. Available tours emphasize the beauty of the stars and northern lights as well as the luxurious experience of geothermal baths. It’s also a great launchpad for outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking.
Golden Circle
Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure
The most popular tourist route in Iceland, the Golden Circle is an easy path between three stunning, famous natural spots: Thingvellir National Park , the Geysir geothermal area , and the Gullfoss waterfall. You can either drive or arrange a guided tour.
Diamond Circle
nicolamargaret/Getty Images
Located in northern Iceland, the Diamond Circle has four primary stops: Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss waterfall, Ásbyrgi glacial canyon, and the fishing town of Húsavík (home to the Húsavík Whale Museum). Such scenic and cultural wonders make it one of Iceland's most popular sightseeing routes.
South Coast
Tours of Iceland’s south coast typically begin in either Reykjavik or Vík and bring travelers to many striking natural sights — namely the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier and Skógafoss, a towering waterfall that often produces a rainbow on sunny days. Other highlights include the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Sólheimajökull glacier, and Reynisfjara black-sand beach.
Blue Lagoon
While Iceland brims with rugged adventures, it’s also a great place for relaxing. Situated in a lava field near Grindavík, the Blue Lagoon is a bucket-list geothermal spa that’s famed for its mineral-rich waters and mud. It’s the perfect spot to spend the day soothing sore muscles and unwinding. (Pro-tip: If you don't want your hair feeling like straw, be sure to lather it in conditioner when you're changing at the property.)
Ice Cave Tour
Ratnakorn Piyasirisorost/Getty Images
One of the most unique features of Iceland, the natural ice caves form in late fall, gleem blue all winter, and melt in the spring. “This makes each visit truly unlike any other,” says Connolly. Due to the rough terrain and the need for glacier safety training, it’s essential to go with a guide. “ KatlaTrack offers tours to the best and most accessible ice caves every year.”
OX Restaurant
One of the best and most unique dining experiences in Iceland, Michelin-starred OX Restaurant serves flavorful fine dining dishes in an intimate, 16-seat counter setting. “The chef doesn’t just prepare incredible food with local products but also shares the story of where the ingredients came from and the inspiration behind the dishes,” adds Connolly.
Hailed as the best new restaurant in Reykjavik by both critics and diners, Oto is a rather unique concept. “On paper, a culinary fusion of Japanese and Spanish influences made with Icelandic ingredients sounds quite unconventional. I’m this case, thinking outside the box results in some exceptional sharing dishes,” says Connolly. “Don’t forget to try the cocktails and mocktails.”
Fish Company
Tucked inside the old Zimsen building, a former store built in the 19th century, the Fish Company feels at once contemporary and cozy — a style also reflected in the seasonally influenced menu. Chef Lárus Gunnar Jónasson whips up gourmet fare with an emphasis on local seafood and other fresh Icelandic ingredients.
You have to take a 45-minute ferry to the Westman Islands to reach Næs (pronounced like "nice"). “I make the trip time and time again because it’s such a lovely place with delicious food,” says Powers. “The sweet tomatoes and stracciatella alone are well worth the journey.
Moss Restaurant
The perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or savor a spectacular post-spa meal, the Michelin-starred Moss Restaurant occupies the top floor of the Blue Lagoon Icelandic ingredients shine in wildly creative ways through chef-prepared coursed menus — including a vegan option. "Every course was delicious," said Baral, "But I will say the cod crisps were addictive — light, crispy, and flavorful. It was created to use the entire fish and minimize food waste."
Powers advises to “ask for a tour of the wine cellar, where world-class vintages are held underground in an alcove between volcanic rocks.”
Iceland is a country of extremes in many ways. The best time to visit really depends on what you’re hoping to see and do. Peak viewing season for the northern lights stretches from September through March, but the country also gets quite cold then and daylight only lasts about five hours. Connolly also steers visitors away from attempting to navigate Route 1 between mid-October and mid-April. "Regardless of how good or skilled of a driver you are, it’s about changing weather and road closures.”
The period between early June and late August brings temperate weather for visiting countless natural wonders. Travelers should be advised to bring a sleeping mask — at the height of summer, the sun stays up until the middle of the night.
Icelandair and PLAY operate low-cost direct flights between many major U.S. airports and Reykjavik. You can usually score a deal, which makes a trip to Iceland — or a multi-day stopover on the way to another European destination — an economical (and exciting) option.
Reykjavik: Vibrant, welcoming, and gorgeous, Reykjavik is the capital and most popular tourist destination in Iceland. This makes sense given that it’s the largest city, close to the airport, and in the middle of some of the most famous landmarks.
Kridtin Wongpoovarak/Getty Images
Akureyri: Sometimes referred to as the “capital of the North,” Akureyri is a port city at the base of Eyjafjörður Fjord that’s home to Akureyri Church, the Akureyri Botanical Garden, and some of the best whale watching in the world, plus
Húsavík: Most people visit Húsavík to see Húsavíkurkirkja, the iconic wooden church built in 1907. Travelers will also enjoy the geothermal baths and Húsavík Whale Museum.
Höfn: Primarily known for scenic views of the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest ice cap in Europe, the fishing town of Höfn in southeast Iceland also supplies shoals and beaches that make it a popular film location.
Vík í Mýrdal: A village of just 300 people, Vík í Mýrdal (or just Vík) ranks among the most popular stops on the Ring Road for those taking the south coast sightseeing route. Two of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls — Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss — sit between Reykjavik and Vík, making the two-and-a-half-hour drive more than worth it. On clear days, the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers are visible, too. However, the biggest draw is without question the black-sand beach of Reynisfjara.
Ísafjörður: Surrounded by sweeping vistas, Ísafjörður hosts Iceland's popular musical festivals — the Ísafjörður Rock Festival and Við Djúpið Music Festival. "If you make it here, definitely visit Tjöruhúsið for a meal," said Baral. "The restaurant serves the daily fresh catch in a family-style buffet in the warmer months."
Vestmannaeyjar: A volcanic archipelago off Iceland’s south coast Vestmannaeyjar (or the Westman Islands) is accessible by ferry. It’s a must-visit to see some diverse wildlife — including puffins and Beluga whales.
Iceland has one main highway, called Ring Road or Route 1. As you might expect based on the name, it goes all the way around the island country. Many of the most famous and beautiful natural wonders sit along or near this route. Most travelers start in Reykjavik, the city closest to Keflavík International Airport (KEF), and either rent a car and do a self-drive itinerary or arrange a multi-day tour through one of the many local operators. Within the capital, it’s possible to utilize the public bus service or take a shuttle to attractions such as the Blue Lagoon.

The Ultimate 7 Day Iceland Itinerary
By Author Roxanne Weijer (she/her)
Posted on Last updated: October 19, 2022
Iceland is one of the most beautiful countries we’ve ever visited. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, geysers, glaciers, lagoons, mountains, colorful churches, Iceland has it all. And with this 7 day Iceland itinerary you get to see those amazing places too!
Every year, Iceland gets more popular. And we definitely get why, as Iceland’s nature is simply breathtaking. It’s the perfect country to go to if you love nature and are looking for adventure. Iceland is different than any other country you’ve seen before.
7 days in Iceland is enough to see the highlights of the country. We recommend to rent a car or campervan and drive around the island yourself. This way you can visit and stop at the places you want to see! Because to be honest, there’s so much to see and do in Iceland that you easily stay for weeks without getting bored. If you rather go on a tour, we will also include our tips in this Iceland in 7 days itinerary.
If you have more days to spend in Iceland, you can also use this 7 day Iceland itinerary, as we recommend extra stops on the way. Just in case you have more time, or if want to skip other spots.
When to Visit Iceland?
Planning when to visit Iceland is very important, as it will decide your itinerary and how many days you need in Iceland. Which season you visit Iceland will form your Iceland experience. Every season in Iceland has its pros and cons, and we will explain to you what those are.
This 7 day Iceland itinerary is for the summer and spring months; during those months you have the most daylight. You could do this itinerary during the winter months, but you will need more time. We recommend visiting Iceland between May and September if you want to see Iceland in 7 days.
Fall & Winter in Iceland
During the winter months, between November and March, there isn’t much daylight. On the shortest day of the year, there are only 4 hours of daylight. Therefore there’s less time to explore and traveling will take longer because of the snow and icy roads. And roads can be closed during the winter months.
The perks are that there are fewer tourists and you will get to experience Iceland how many people imagine Iceland to be: cold, lots of snow, and beautiful winter landscapes. During wintertime, you also have the best chances to see the northern lights. And think about those cool icy adventures like ice caves.
September and October is fall time in Iceland. The temperatures are getting cooler, nature is changing colors and you are also able to see the northern lights. Remember: northern lights can never be guaranteed.
Spring & Summer in Iceland
Temperatures begin to rise, the days are getting longer and longer, nature wakes up, snow melts, hello spring! In May and April, it’s springtime in Iceland; June, July, and August are the summer months.
During these months you can experience the midnight sun, which happens between mid-May and mid-August. This natural phenomenon happens in places close to the poles, bringing long bright days and never-ending daylight. So the sun is still visible at midnight. Imagine how many hours a day you have to explore Iceland! Also, this time of year you can see puffins (May-August), Lupines (May-July), and whales.
The downside is that there are a lot more tourists and prices are more expensive. Make sure to book things in advance this time of the year!
Weather in Iceland
We’ve talked about the different seasons in Iceland in the previous paragraph, but it’s also good to know a few things about the weather in Iceland.
The weather in Iceland is unpredictable and changes a lot. When in Iceland you might hear the joke ‘if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes’. It changes constantly!
In general, South Iceland gets more rain, is windier, and is warmer than North Iceland. But it’s the sunniest in East and North Iceland. So don’t worry if you have bad weather in one part of Iceland, as it can be totally different in another part.
When you hear Iceland, you probably think ‘super cold’. But the temperatures aren’t too cold in Iceland (even in winter), thanks to the Gulf Stream bringing warmth all the way from the Caribbean. Be aware that summer temperatures are colder than other summer temperatures around the world.
Driving in Iceland
Like we said in the introduction, we highly recommend to hire a car or campervan in Iceland and drive around the island yourself. This way you can visit and stop at the places you want to see and explore Iceland at your own pace. Make sure to check the best deals and compare prices for car rental in Iceland . For this 7 day Iceland itinerary it’s not necessary to rent a 4×4 car or campervan, though if you visit Iceland in winter it might be handy.
We explored Iceland with a campervan from Happy Campers and we loved it. A campervan gives you the opportunity to cook for yourselves and go camping in Iceland. But you can also still choose to go to a restaurant and stay in one of the coolest hotels in Iceland.
There’s one road in Iceland that goes around Iceland. That road is called the ring road or simply Route 1 and is a total length of approximately 1300 kilometers (807 miles). You will use this road most of the time and you can either drive clock-wise or counter clock-wise. We drove around the island counter clock-wise but if you want to do it the other way around, that’s possible too.
Iceland Tours
Not looking forward to driving in Iceland yourselves?! Luckily there are many Iceland tours that either go around the island , only explore South Iceland , go on a Golden Circle day trip , or go to West Iceland.
Make sure the tours include the stops of this Iceland 7 day itinerary!
Iceland Budget
Yes, Iceland is expensive, though this trip is worth saving up for. And to be honest, for us Dutchies, the prices were okay. It’s more expensive than the Netherlands, but there are ways to keep your Iceland budget low.
Campervan rental is more expensive than car rental, for example, but with a campervan, you are able to cook yourselves (which saves money on restaurants) and you can sleep on a camping (which are a lot cheaper than hotels).
If you want to splurge on the most amazing hotels and restaurants, then Iceland is also the perfect place.
Below we will tell you the estimated cost of a trip to Iceland:
- Accommodation: €100-150 for a double room per night in a standard hotel (hostels and guesthouses are cheaper, luxurious hotels more expensive)
- Camping: €7-11 per person per night
- Food: €50-60 a day (you can save a lot of money if you get groceries yourself and cook)
- Transport rental: € 160 per day (car rental is cheaper than campervan rental)
- Gas: €350 for 7 days
- Activities: €50-200 per activity
We spent roughly € 3000 for a 7 days in Iceland trip for two people, including our flights from Europe.

7 Day Itinerary Iceland
Like we said before, you can easily stay in Iceland for weeks without getting bored. You need at least 7 days in Iceland to make the whole round around the island.
In this Iceland itinerary, we share the must-visit highlights. But we will also share a few extra stops that are lesser-known, in case you have extra time or you want to skip some other highlights.
Good the know: Iceland is so pretty that you want to stop everywhere, but that’s not possible if you just have 7 days in Iceland. And 7 days also isn’t enough to go on long hikes every day.

If you fly to Iceland, you will probably arrive at Keflavík international airport. This is the most popular airport in Iceland and is located about a 45-minute drive from the city center of Reykjavik.
Depending on the time you arrive at the airport, we highly recommend going directly from the airport to the Blue Lagoon, as this is just a 15-minute ride. The Blue Lagoon is a beautiful (Instagrammable) spa and is the perfect place to relax after a flight. And it’s a great place to start your Iceland road trip.
Use the rest of your day to explore Reykjavik. Must see places in Reykjavik are:
- Hallgrimskirkja
- Sun Voyager
- The rainbow path on Skólavörðustígur
- Harpa Concert Hall
- Laugavegur street (there are many bars, shops, and restaurants here)
- Cafe Babalú (try their Icelandic traditional skyr cake)
More time? Take a look at our one day in Reykjavik blog for more sightseeing and things to do in Reykjavik!
Where to stay in Reykjavik
We highly recommend staying in or close to the city center of Reykjavik. As you only have one day in Reykjavik, you don’t want to spend too much time traveling back and forth. Most Reykjavik sightseeing spots are in the city center.
Where to stay in Reykjavik: Hotel Klettur , Freyja Guesthouse & Suites , Kvosin Downtown Hotel , and Black Pearl Apartment Hotel .
If you are on a budget and want to park your car convenient at the hotel, we recommend staying at Hotel Cabin .
Looking for a unique place to stay in Reykjavik? Check out Reykjavik Domes (or book via Airbnb )! What could be more fun than sleeping under the stars (and maybe even the northern lights?) in Iceland. These glass-roofed domes in Reykjavik are just 10km from the center, so you get the best of both worlds. Make sure to book the luxury dome with a hot tub for the most romantic evening.
Day 2: Golden Circle Iceland
It’s time to leave Reykjavik again (the earlier the better) because today we are going to explore the famous Golden Circle. The Golden Circle is one of the most well-known routes in Iceland and is especially popular because it’s located close to Reykjavik. People that don’t have much time in Iceland, often only explore Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, and South Iceland. The Golden Circle can’t be missed on this Iceland in 7 days itinerary!
The Golden Circle is a route between 3 popular attractions, Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and the waterfall Gullfoss. Though there are more beautiful places where you can stop on the way. If you drive from Reykjavik and back the route is about 230 kilometers (140 miles). Sadly, you can’t find gold on the Golden Circle, it’s just a nickname!
The Golden Circle is free to visit, but at some spots you need to pay an entrance fee or pay for parking (but not at many places).
If you don’t want to drive the Golden Circle yourself, we recommend going on this Golden Circle tour .
Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir (in Icelandic Þingvellir) is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s historically and geologically a very special place. You can call the national park the birthplace of Iceland, as the Icelandic parliament assembled here for the first time back in 930.
What makes the national park geologically special is the two tectonic plates located in the park, the Northern American plate and the Eurasian plate, which move about 2 centimeters each year. At the Silfra fissure, you can snorkel and dive between those continental plates. It’s the only place in the world where you can do this!
Snorkeling in Silfra is one of the most stunning snorkeling experiences we’ve ever had. So if you like the underwater world, make sure to schedule some extra time for a Silfra snorkeling tour .
Other spots to visit in the national park are Almannagjá gorge, the waterfall Öxarárfoss and make sure to spot the lake Thingvallavatn and the Langjökull glacier.
Geysir Geothermal Area
The next stop is the Geysir geothermal area. This is the most famous geothermal area in Iceland and is a great place to wander around. Enjoy the geysers, hot springs, and bubbling mud pots. The area is named after the geyser Geysir, which sadly isn’t active anymore.
Luckily there’s still the geyser Strokkur nearby. Strokkur erupts between every 6 and 10 minutes (though sometimes it can also take 15 minutes if you are unlucky). Strokkur can shoot hot water 40 meters (130 feet) high into the sky. Make sure to have your camera ready. Don’t stand too close, you and your camera gear might get wet!
Gullfoss Waterfall
The waterfall Gullfoss is the last stop of the Golden Circle before we make our way to South Iceland. This is a very impressive waterfall with two different layers. And if it’s sunny you might be able to see a rainbow created by the large amount of spray water from the waterfall!
Next to the waterfall, there’s a trail you can walk to get to the edge of Gullfoss (you will get a little wet when you walk here). For here you can see and hear how powerful the waterfall really is.
Good to know: foss means waterfall in Icelandic!
Like we said before, there’s so much to see and do in Iceland that you easily stay for weeks without getting bored. If you have more time during this second day, here are some other spots to visit: Bruarfoss waterfall, Kerid crater, the Secret Lagoon, the town Skáholt, Faxifoss waterfall, and Reykjadalur Thermal River. And the restaurant Minilik is an unique place to go to for Ethiopian food (make a reservation before you go).
Where to Stay in the Golden Circle Area?
Tonight it’s best to stay in the direction of South Iceland, in the town Selfoss for example. But if you want to stay on the Golden Circle route we recommend Hotel Litli Geysir and Hotel Gullfoss .
For a super unique stay, we highly recommend staying the night in a Bubble or at a Glass Lodge . Both are stunning places!
Day 3: South Iceland
Iceland has many many many waterfalls (around 10.000!). Especially in South Iceland, there are quite some waterfalls to visit. We’ve included the (in our eyes) must-see waterfalls in this Iceland in 7 days itinerary, though if you want to skip some to have more time, that’s possible.
South Iceland is beautiful and has many stunning places to see. Therefore today is going to be a busy day exploring! And make sure to look around while driving, as the scenery is going to be beautiful.
Stops in South Iceland:
- Gljúfrafoss (also known as Gljúfrabúi)
- Seljalandsfoss
Gljúfrafoss and Seljalandsfoss are two waterfalls located close to each other. It’s about a 7-minute walk from one to another. We recommend parking at Gljúfrafoss if you don’t want to pay for parking, as at Seljalandsfoss there’s a parking fee. Both waterfalls are worth the visit. You might get a bit wet at Gljúfrafoss.
Not many people know about Kvernufoss (yet), so make sure to visit this waterfall as soon as possible! It’s one of my favorite places in Iceland, as I simply love the canyon and waterfall combination. It’s a short walk from the parking area next to the Skogar Museum and so worth it! You need to climb over the fence, but luckily there’s are stairs to climb over it. This is how the farmer tells people it’s okay to enter their land!
- Solheimajokull glacier
- DC-3 plane wreck
This DC-3 plane wreck is a famous place in Iceland, especially for photos (you’ve probably seen this airplane on Instagram!). In 1973, the plane crashed on this beautiful black sand beach and it stayed there ever since (luckily nobody died during the crash). It isn’t possible to drive to the plane wreck, so you need to walk. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way. So as you can see it takes quite some time to see the plane wreck. We think it’s especially worth it if you are a photography lover. It can be crowded during the daytime though.
- Dyrhólaey viewpoint + lighthouse
- Reynisfjara beach
The last stops of the day are Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara beach. To get to the Dyrhólaey lighthouse you need to have a 4×4 car or you can walk up the mountain. The viewpoint is accessible for every car. If you visit Iceland between June and mid-August you might see puffins here!
Hotels Vik Iceland
We recommend staying the night in Vik , the southernmost village in Iceland. Hotel Icelandair Vik , Hotel Kria , and Black Beach Suites are great places to stay at. When in Vik, don’t forget to spot the beautiful church on the mountain. It can’t be missed!
Day 4: Southeast Iceland
From Vik we continue driving in the direction of East Iceland. It’s going to be another exciting day. Day 4 of this 7 day Iceland itinerary includes canyons, a glacier lagoon, lava walks, a diamond beach, and surprise: a waterfall!
Stops in South East Iceland:
- Green lava walk
- Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
Svartifoss is s beautiful waterfall that’s surrounded by basalt columns. The meaning of Svartifoss is black waterfall. To get to the waterfall you need to hike for about 45-60 minutes. On the way, you get to see other waterfalls too!
- Diamond Beach
- Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón
Diamond Beach is the beautiful black sand beach with icebergs on it! The icebergs float from the glacier lagoon into the sea and are pushed back on the beach again. When it’s sunny the icebergs sparkle like diamonds, hence the name! There are many seals in the area, and if you are lucky, you might spot an orca from shore.
Where to stay in South East Iceland?
The hotels and bed and breakfast options in this part of Iceland are limited. Depending on the time of day you end at Diamond Beach and the glacier lagoon we recommend either drive to Höfn or to find a place on the way. From Diamond Beach, it’s about an hour drive to Höfn.
Places we recommend to stay on the way to Höfn: Hali Country Hotel , Skyrhúsid Guest House , Guesthouse Nypugardar , and Fosshótel Vatnajökull .
Places we recommend to stay in/close to Höfn: Milk Factory , Seljavellir Guesthouse , Aurora Cabins , and Hotel Edda Höfn .
Höfn is a fishing village in East Iceland. It’s located close to the largest glacier of Europe, Vatnajökull. If the weather is clear, you are able to see the glacier from Höfn!
Day 5: East Iceland
It’s day 5 and you’ve already seen so many epic things by now! Today will include lots of driving, and less stops. But don’t worry as today’s drive is going to be a scenic route. The drive itself is the attraction! And don’t be surprised to see the paved road changing into an unpaved road.
This part of Iceland is where you will see fewer tourists, as South Iceland is where most tourists go to. Therefore you will notice fewer people driving on the road.
Stops in East Iceland:
- Stokksnes/Vestrahorn
- Viking Village
Stokksnes peninsula can’t be missed on this 7 day Iceland itinerary. The peninsula is famous for the Vestrahorn mountains, one of the most beautiful mountain range in Iceland. With cool steep mountain cliffs, 454 meters (1490 ft) tall peaks, and black sand beaches, it’s an impressive area.
The area is a private area and there’s an entrance fee to enter (around €5/$6 per person). Before you go, make sure to check the weather forecast. When it’s misty or when there’s a low cloud, the mountains will disappear and you won’t see anything.
In the same area, you will find a replica Viking village. The village was built for a movie, but the movie was never filmed. In case you visit Stokksness it’s fun to visit the Viking village too, but we won’t recommend only going there for the village.
- Egilsstaðir
We will be driving all the way to Egilsstaðir and this is where we will be staying tonight. In case you have more time today and want to add some stops to your itinerary continue reading the next paragraph.
More time in East Iceland?
If you have more time in East Iceland, we recommend checking the following places. Iceland in 7 days isn’t enough to see everything, but we do want to mention these stops in the area: Hengifoss (one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland), Borgarfjarðarhöfn (puffin island), and Seydisfjordur (here you can see the picturesque Seyðisfjarðarkirkja and rainbow path).
Egilsstaðir Hotels
Egilsstadir is a fun and lively city in East Iceland. It’s the biggest city in Eastern Iceland. We recommend the following places to stay in/close to Egilsstadir: Icelandair Hotel Herad , Lake Hotel Egilsstadir , Hotel 1001 Nott , and Ormurinn Cottages .
Head to Askur Pizzeria in Egilsstadir for delicious pizza!
Day 6: North Iceland
Day 6 of this 7 day Iceland itinerary is full of exciting stops (including our favorite canyon in Iceland)! Today we are heading to Akureyri, Iceland’s second-biggest city. On the way, you will see Iceland’s latest hot spot, waterfalls, mars like landscapes, and a geothermal area.
Stops in North Iceland
- Stuðlagil Canyon
The Studlagil canyon is Iceland’s latest hot spot and you might wonder why. Until recently you weren’t able to see the canyon as the canyon was always filled with water. Due to a newly built hydroelectric power station, the water level reduced. So at first, you couldn’t see the canyon, but now you can. And it’s not just a canyon, it’s a stunning canyon with basalt columns. Our absolute favorite canyon in Iceland.
When we visited the canyon in August 2020 there were many locals, who wanted to see the canyon for themselves. As they heard many stories from other locals about it.
There’s a viewpoint on the East side of the canyon, though we highly recommend parking your car at the bridge and walk to the canyon. The hike takes about an hour one way. It’s a quite boring walk but this time it’s all about the destination itself! It’s very worth it.
If you are planning on hiking to the canyon, make sure to start the day early. Or skip any other stop of this 7 day Iceland itinerary, otherwise, it’s too much to do in one day.
Read more about the Stuðlagil canyon !
There are two roads that lead to the Dettifoss waterfall. The west road is the best road (road 862) as it’s partly paved. The east road (864) is bumpier, but many consider the view better for pictures as you can get closer (picture above is taken at the east side).
Myvatn is a lake with many islands located in a volcanic region. The landscape here is very mysterious and amazing to explore. It’s an active geothermal area, so don’t be surprised to see smoke coming out of the ground. The area is also great for bird lovers! And if you want to relax, head to the Myvatn nature baths.
Note: in the area of Myvatn and Hverir there are may black flies. We noticed that people that are staying longer in the area buy nets for over their heads.
End the day in Akureyri, Iceland second biggest city. Make sure to check out the heart-shaped traffic lights in Akureyri!
If you have more time, then add the Viti Crater in Krafla (if you have a 4×4) and the Grjótagjá cave to your itinerary. Are you a Game Of Thrones fan? You might recognize the Grjótagjá cave, it’s a filming location of the series.
Whale Watching Iceland
Akureyri and Husavik are two popular places to go whale watching. Husavik is even called the whale watching capital of Iceland. So if you want to see whales in Iceland, you might want to do it in Northern Iceland.
If you have the time to travel to Husavik, we highly recommend it. Husavik is one of our favorite cities in Iceland. Otherwise, go on a tour from Akureyri. End the day while watching whales when the sun goes down. Go on a RIB boat to get faster and closer to the whales.
Accomodation in Akureyri
We recommend the following places to stay in Akureyri: Hotel Kea , Icelandair Hotel Akureyri , Centrum Guesthouse , and Halllandsnes Apartments .
Day 7: West Iceland
It’s the last day of this 7 day Iceland itinerary. Depending on when you are leaving Iceland you can either directly drive back to Reykjavik from Akureyri (about a 5-hour drive) or stop in the Snæfellsnes peninsula. We highly recommend the latter (if you have the time).
For the Westfjords (Europe’s most Western point) there’s definitely no time, so you just have to come back! Same for us, as we heard driving there can be quite difficult, we skipped the Westfjords. But it’s good to leave things for next time right?! So you have an extra good reason to come back.
In case you will visit the Snaefellsnes peninsula, we will tell you the places to visit.
Stops in the Snaefellsnes peninsula
- Kirkjufellsfoss
Kirkjufell is the most-photographed mountain in all of Iceland. So if you are a photographer, definitely make your way to this beautiful mountain. The mountain reminds us of Lion’s Head in South Africa, maybe you see the comparison too! What makes the mountain extra stunning, is the waterfall in front of it (from the right angle). Head to Kirkjufellsfoss for the best shot.
- Ingjaldshóll
Iceland has many beautiful churches, and Ingjaldshóll is one of them. The mountains and road toward this church make the church extra special. This is a great spot for photographers.
- Snæfellsjökull National Park
Snæfellsjökull National Park is a national park located on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. You can either drive through this park and enjoy the scenery or make a few stops in between. And if the weather allows it you will be able to see the Snæfell volcano, which is covered with the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Places you could stop at in the National Park are the Saxholl crater, Dritvik & Djúpalónssandur, Londrangar, and one of the caves. Afterward, you can continue driving back to road 54.
- The village Anarstapi
- Búðakirkja (black church)
- Gerðuberg Cliffs
- Landbrotalaug Secret Hot Springs
The Landbrotalaug Secret Hot Springs is a geothermal area with one super cute and romantic hot spring to sit in. Sadly, the area is not as secret as the name tells you. Many people visited Landbrotalaug and left rubbish behind. Therefore the landowner ‘closed’ the area. If you decide to go there, make sure to not leave any rubbish behind.
The drive from Akureyri to the Snæfellsnes peninsula and Reykjavik is quite long. If you want to do something fun on the way, we highly recommend going on a horse riding tour in Varmahlíð. We did an hour horse riding tour through the Icelandic nature with Hestasport and absolutely loved it. You don’t need to have any experience. They also have amazing cottages .
Icelandic horses are special horses, as it’s the only horse breed in the world that can do 5 different gaits. Gaits are different ways of walking.
Where to stay in West Iceland?
Depending on where you want to end the last day of this Iceland 7 day itinerary, we recommend spending the night on either the Snaefellsnes peninsula, on the way to Reykjavik, or in Reykjavik itself.
Places we recommend to stay on the Snaefellsnes peninsula: Drangar Country Guesthouse , Hotel Búdir , Hotel Stundarfridur , and Sodulsholt Cottages .
Accomodation on the way to Reykjavik: Icelandair Hotel Hamar , Hotel Laxarbakki , Kría Cottages , and Esjan .
Where to stay in Reykjavik: Hotel Klettur , Freyja Guesthouse & Suites , Kvosin Downtown Hotel , and Black Pearl Apartment Hotel .

Ah I loved Iceland! We were there for 7 days but there's still so much more to see. Can't wait to go back.
Oh yes you must! Did you go in summer? Then at least the days are long!
I love how clean and beautiful Iceland looks. I can almost feel the fresh air looking at these pictures!
Oh it is absolutely fresh!!
Great Guide. We've been twice to Iceland, but still you named a few new places for me.
Oh that is lovely, we hope to revisit too!!
Tips to travel Iceland on a budget, plus travel expert-approved gear
Where to get local deals, take a dip in a hot spring and more.
Need some summer vacation ideas that won't break the bank? "Good Morning America" is off to Iceland and packing expert tips to help create the perfect travel bucket list on a budget.
From free dips in hot springs to the stunning Seljalandsfoss waterfall, ABC News' Ashan Singh explored the Nordic island nation and shared the top ways to enjoy every stop of the trip without overspending.
"Iceland is a tremendous deal from the Boston area in particular -- flights are only about five hours in each direction -- you could take just a long weekend there and still get an action-packed trip," Eric Rosen director of travel content for The Points Guy, told "GMA."
TPG has seen deals for as low as $400 and for travelers who don't care where they're seated on the plane, some fares drop as low as $230.
When it comes to hotels, Rosen offered another simple tip, spend now on credit cards from brands like Hilton or Marriott that, once the spending threshold is reached, offer large bonus points.
"Hilton cards for instance, offer anywhere from 130 to 180,000 points typically as part of their bonus," he said. "And that's going to be good enough for two maybe even three nights at some of these hotels in Reykjavik. And that could be your whole trip right there."
Iceland activities on a budget
Get a taste of the city's culture with the Reykjavík City Card, which gives visitors access to multiple museums, art galleries, pools and even bus transportation for free.
Enjoy going home with a fashionable souvenir? Local knits are quintessentially Iceland, but with handmade sweaters priced up to $500, Singh sought out second hand store, Extraloppan to score a sweater as low as $50.
Rent a car. Singh found deals for as low as $86 a day.
Save on a more extravagant meal by finding a deal through the Dineout Iceland app, which for a small fee offers discounts all over the land of fire and ice.
Looking for a cheap and quick local bite? Try a roadside hot dog for just $4.
Visit the free National Parks and take in sights like waterfalls and geysers, but Singh suggests skipping the Blue Lagoon, which can cost $350 for a family of four, instead opt for taking a dip in a local, free hot spring.

Adventure into the Land of Fire and Ice
This small island packs a lot of wonder into every inch—you'll find fiery volcanos, crystalline waterfalls, and majestic glaciers on the land, and the iridescent glow of the Northern Lights each winter in the skies above. Discover Iceland's Viking past, and its warm and welcoming culture.
- Northern Lights
You'll have the best chance of catching the most amazing, all-natural light show if you travel to Iceland from late September to late March.
The capital's name, Reykjavik, literally means "cove of smoke," inspired by the steam coming from the natural hot springs.
- Skogar Folk Museum
Lush, green turf roofs (with an underlay of birch bark) were one of the most common roofing types throughout Scandinavia and Iceland—and offered plenty of insulation during the cold winter months.
Perlan Observatory
The Perlan Observatory offers spectacular views of Reykjavik and Iceland below—and the Northern Lights above.
- Reynisfjara Beach
The volcanoes that built Iceland also created its gorgeous black sand beaches—and the stone columns here, which legend has it were created by trolls.
Natural Springs
Iceland's abundant natural springs offer many opportunities for soaking and soothing.
- Blue Lagoon
The gorgeous Blue Lagoon isn't technically a natural hot spring--it was built in a volcanic lava field to harness the heat of the 100-degree, mineral-rich water from beneath the earth's surface.
Black Beach
The volcanoes that built Iceland also created its gorgeous black sand beaches.
Diamond Beach
Bits of glacial ice wash ashore on the black sands of Diamond Beach, looking like massive diamonds glittering on the ground.
Hot Springs
A plunge into an Icelandic spring is among the most restorative natural therapies you'll ever find.
- Secret Lagoon
The Secret Lagoon is a small, natural hot springs that became Iceland's first public swimming pool in the 19th century.
Skogafoss Falls
Rainbow seekers are often lucky enough to find double rainbows created in the mist that rises from theis waterfall's 200-foot-long drop.
- Thingvellir National Park
Thanks to the volatile volcanic forces still at play in the Land of Fire and Ice, Thingvellir National Park expands by nearly an inch each year.
Strokkur Geyser
Strokkur Geyser erupts every five to eight minutes, sending water and steam nearly 100 feet into the air.

Tips to travel Iceland on a budget, plus travel expert-approved gear

Fortunately for you, many of Iceland’s most spectacular natural landscapes are still accessible in the winter, and you might even find they’re cloaked in a beautiful layer of white snow.
Planning your trip to Iceland last minute?

Top picks for places to stay in Iceland:
- Hotel South Coast (Great central location)
- Grandi Reykjavik (Includes free breakfast)
- Hotel Kria (Close to black sand beach)
- Hotel Skaftafell (Mid-range price)
From the Snaefellsness Peninsula all the way east to Skaftafell and the glacier lagoons, the landscape is equally stunning wherever you go and is remarkably diverse.
Whether you take Iceland winter tours or stick to exploring on your own, you’re in for a real treat.
How Many Days Do You Need For Your Iceland Winter Itinerary?
The beauty of this Iceland winter road trip itinerary is that it can be adapted to fit your desires and time constraints.
A week to explore down the south coast and back would be ideal, but anywhere from 4-7 days will give you enough time to really soak in the beauty of the country in winter.
The limited daylight hours, particularly if you plan an Iceland Itinerary for December, mean you’ll have less time each day to explore, however activities such as bathing in hot springs and viewing the Northern Lights can be done after the sun sets.
Because the winter weather restricts access to some parts of the country, you have less ground to cover and will stick largely to the south coast. This means that a 4-7 day winter Iceland Itinerary is a reasonable timeline.
Daylight Hours For Your Iceland Winter Road Trip
As winter arrives in the land of fire and ice, the days rapidly get shorter ultimately culminating in the winter solstice on December 21 when the country sees just four hours of daylight from approximately 11:30am to 3:30pm.
If you plan an Iceland Itinerary for January, the daylight hours will increase again to 7 hours by the end of the month giving you a little more time to explore.
By February you’ll experience 10 hours of daylight as it finally begins to resemble the daylight hours of the rest of Europe.
While the many hours of darkness certainly impact the number of outdoor activities that can be accomplished in one day on a winter Iceland road trip, it also means a higher chance of experiencing ideal conditions to see the Northern Lights.
Weather On Your Winter Iceland Trip
There’s no arguing against the fact that Iceland winters are cold, however despite the country’s name and its proximity to the Arctic Circle, it’s not as cold as you might think.
Thanks in part to the warming effects of the Gulfstream, the average winter temperatures are in fact comparable to that of a US city such as New York City.
Winter temperatures particularly in the capital hover around freezing (32F/0C), however, if you pack appropriately and bundle up, the cold won’t stop you from completing your adventurous itinerary.
The bigger hindrance in the winter is the snow, rain, and often fierce winds making road conditions challenging and sometimes dangerous. Iceland’s weather is notoriously unpredictable all year long.
If you’re planning a winter trip to Iceland, make sure you continue to check the road conditions. Even the best-maintained roads can become impassable during the winter months.
Ultimate Iceland Winter Itinerary In 7 Days
Day 1: south coast waterfalls .
Iceland’s south coast is known for its spectacular waterfalls. Not only is this collection of waterfalls particularly impressive, but they are all relatively close to one another making them easy to access in one day.
You can expect large tourist crowds at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss in particular. Their easy accessibility off of the well-maintained Route 1 and their reasonable proximity to Reykjavik make them an appealing stop for your Iceland winter itinerary.
Book Here: Full-Day South Coast, Black Beach & Waterfalls Tour
Stop 1: Walk Behind The Cascading Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Seljalandsfoss is the first of the south coast waterfalls you’ll encounter, and it’s certainly one of the most popular.
This 200-foot waterfall is particularly unique because a path leads around the back allowing you to walk behind the waterfall and feel its sheer force. If you don’t want to get wet, bring a raincoat as you’ll definitely catch some of the sprays as it hits the water below.
If you choose to visit the waterfall as part of your 7-day winter Iceland Itinerary, you’ll have the opportunity to see it take on a whole new kind of beauty as parts of the waterfall freeze and a sprinkling of snow coats the land around it.
This is truly one of my favorite things to do in Iceland!
Stop 2: Wade Through A Cavern To Find Gljúfrabúi
Gljúfrabúi is particularly convenient to visit as it’s a neighbor to Seljalandsfoss. This unique waterfall requires a bit more of an adventure to reach, and ideally, you’d be equipped with waterproof or quick-drying shoes in case the water levels are high.
To reach Gljúfrabúi on your Iceland winter trip, you’ll follow the end of the Seljalandsfoss trail towards the campground, where you’ll eventually spot a sign for the entrance to the waterfall. From there, you’ll walk over stones through the river or wade through the water if the stones are underwater.
Inside the cavern, you’ll find a beautiful waterfall cascading down the cavern walls. On a sunny day it’s particularly striking as it’s made even more brilliant by catching the light streaming through the opening above.
Stop 3: View The Power Of Skogafoss From Below Or Above
Your Iceland winter road trip continues with Skogafoss which is located just a short 25 minutes down Route 1 from Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi. It’s nearly equal in height to Seljalandsfoss at 197 feet but beats it in width at an impressive 84 feet wide.
This thundering waterfall can be viewed from below where you’re sure to get wet from the spray. Or you can choose to work your legs climbing roughly 500 stairs to the top of the waterfall for a view from up above.
From above you’ll get to see the waterfall’s source, the river Skógá, as well as a view out beyond of the vast south coast landscape.
Stop 4: Wander Into The Valley Where Kvernufoss Awaits
Visually, Kvernufoss has many similarities to Seljalandsfoss, just on a smaller scale. It also happens to be a neighbor to Skogafoss making it an obvious next stop on your Iceland winter itinerary.
You’ll drive from Skogafoss to Hotel Edda, which is right next door, where you’ll walk a brief 10-15 minutes into the valley. Navigating the last part of this walk is trickier and sometimes impossible in the winter when the icy ground makes approaching the waterfall dangerous.
Worst case scenario you can view this 98-foot waterfall from a bit of a distance. It’s still a beautiful site and a peaceful one too thanks to much smaller crowds.

Day 2: Skaftafell And Glacier Lagoons
Day 2 of your Iceland winter road trip itinerary is the kind of day Elsa from Frozen would enjoy thanks to an endless supply of ice-related experiences.
This is the farthest east you’ll venture on this trip before heading back in the direction of Reykjavik.
From glaciers to floating icebergs you’re about to experience a whole new side of Iceland that fits right in with the country’s name. This is proof of Iceland’s diverse landscape at its finest.
Stop 1: Explore The Landscapes Within The Skaftafell Nature Reserve
Unsurprisingly Iceland is home to a number of national parks including Vatnajokull National Park where you’ll find the Skaftafell Nature Reserve.
This is the perfect opportunity to take a guided ice cave tour . These Iceland winter tours take you over a glacier and through newly discovered or rediscovered ice caves that form each summer and become explorable in the winter.
Within Skaftafell you’ll also find another of Iceland’s unique and impressive waterfalls, Svartifoss. A 3.5-mile round trip hike takes you by a number of other waterfalls before reaching the cascading Svartifoss backed by beautiful basalt columns.
Book Here: Skaftafell Guided Glacier Hike Day Trip
Stop 2: Escape The Crowds At The Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon
The Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon offers similar beauty to Jokulsarlon, but on a smaller more intimate scale. Tourists flock to Jokulsarlon but many skip over its neighbor leaving you to enjoy the beauty of Fjallsarlon in peace and quiet.
If you sit by the water you can hear the ice break and collide, a reminder of nature’s ever-changing existence and power. This is the perfect way to wind down day two of your winter Iceland road trip.
Stop 3: Watch the Icebergs Float To Shore At Jokulsarlon And Diamond Beach
There’s something so serene and peaceful about watching icebergs float on calm waters during your Iceland winter trip.
The Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon gives you the opportunity to view these bergs from a distance while listening to the occasional crack of ice as pieces break off the glacier in the background.
Across the street, you’ll find Diamond Beach, a beautiful black sand beach with crystal clear iceberg chunks dotting its shores. The beauty of Diamond Beach is that it’s always changing as ice melts and new bergs wash to shore.

Day 3: Solheimasandur And Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Day 3 is one of the more relaxed days of your winter Iceland road trip as a light itinerary leaves you with time to wander and fully take in the unique spots you’ll be visiting.
From an eerie plane wreck to the most well-known of Iceland’s unique black sand beaches complete with dramatic basalt columns, you’re in for an exciting day with the chance to take in a part of Iceland that is different from anything else you’ll experience on this trip.
Stop 1: Circle The Plane Crash Remains On Solheimasandur Beach
Visiting the wreckage of a plane crash may seem like an odd choice for your winter Iceland Itinerary when you have so much natural beauty to explore around the country, but when that plane crash is smack in the middle of one of Iceland’s black sand beaches, it becomes all the more intriguing.
A 2-mile hike each way will take you to the Solheimasadur Plane Wreck, the remains of a DC-3 US navy plane from 1973. Thankfully everyone survived the crash, so the story isn’t exceptionally grim, but the scene still paints an eerie picture.
The white wreckage contrasted with the black sand is a picture every tourist looks to get. Visiting in winter is equally fantastic when the sand might be peppered with white snow.
Book Here: South Coast and Black Beach ATV Ride
Stop 2: Watch The Raging Atlantic From The Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Iceland is known for its black sand beaches, but Reynisfjara is the most popular of them all. Known for its dramatic waves, the beach can be both stunning and dangerous. Sleeper waves have been known to take out oblivious tourists, so stay alert.
As long as you’re paying attention and are dressed to brace the cold, the beach is a wonderful stop along your winter Iceland road trip allowing you to take in ocean sounds, admire the unusual rock formations out in the sea, and climb the basalt columns.
The basalt columns line the back part of the beach rising higher and higher like an enormous church organ. They’ve become a favorite spot for photographs as tourists climb the individual hexagons.
From the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, you’ll head a couple of hours away to Fludir so you’re in a great position to start Day 4.

Affordable: Skyggnir Bed and Breakfast . Check rates: Booking.com
Mid-range: Blue Hotel Fagrilundur . Check rates: Booking.com
Day 4: Golden Circle and Hot Springs
Iceland’s Golden Circle route is perhaps the most iconic tourist route in the country which means it gets crowded, but it’s iconic for a reason and offers you a glimpse of some of Iceland’s most spectacular natural phenomena.
Day 4 of your 7-day winter Iceland Itinerary takes you to hot springs, waterfalls, and geysers. By the time you reach your hotel at the end of the day, you’ll be in awe of the power and diversity of nature.
Book Here: Golden Circle Full Day Tour From Reykjavik
Stop 1: Grab A Pool Noodle And Float In The Secret Lagoon
Let the hot spring bathing begin! The Secret Lagoon is the first of many opportunities on your Iceland winter itinerary for you to soak in geothermally heated water.
The Secret Lagoon is a man-made pool with water fed from a natural spring. It’s located in a geothermally active area near the town of Fluðir and is a favorite spot for many locals and tourists.
If you’re looking for the luxury of the Blue Lagoon, this is not it. But this modest pool offers pool noodles to float on, a petite geyser behind the pool, a relaxing setting for recharging and is an ideal way to start your day.
Book Here: Golden Circle Small Group Tour With Secret Lagoon
Stop 2: Stay Warm In The Hrunalaug Hot Springs
The Hrunalaug Hot Springs consists of one bathtub-sized pool and one slightly larger 8-10 person pool with a changing hut in between.
As you relax in the hot springs, you’ll be surrounded by the beautiful natural landscape while you enjoy ideal water temperature that is perfect for keeping you warm as you make your way through day 4 of your Iceland winter itinerary.
While you’re more than welcome to visit both the Secret Lagoon and the Hrunalaug Hot Springs back to back, you’ll more likely want to pick one over the other as they both serve similar purposes.
Stop 3: Take In The Impressive Width Of Faxafoss
The packed crowds of the most famous Golden Circle stops are still to come, but in the meantime, you can enjoy a lesser-known treasure of this tourist route, the Faxafoss waterfall.
Faxafoss stands at 105 feet tall which is nothing special compared to the well-known south coast waterfalls, but its width and the power of its crashing water make it a worthwhile stop.
Another benefit to visiting this natural beauty is its proximity to the greenhouse restaurant Friðheimar where you can get the most delicious all-you-can-eat tomato soup and freshly baked bread to fuel your Iceland winter road trip adventures.
Stop 4: Feel The Spray Of The Two-tiered Gullfoss Waterfall
You’ve officially hit the first of the three most iconic Golden Circle stops on your winter Iceland road trip.
Gullfoss is an impressive, two-tiered waterfall nicknamed the Golden Waterfall due to the rainbow that can often be seen arching over it on a sunny day.
You can view the waterfall from its second drop, or climb the stairs to the top of the waterfall where you can get close enough to feel its misty spray. Either viewpoint is impressive and makes you understand why this stop is among the most famous in Iceland.
Stop 4: Take A Video of The Strokkur Geyser Erupting
Strokkur marks the second of the iconic Golden Circle stops on your winter Iceland Itinerary. Iceland is full of geothermally active regions, but to see an erupting geyser is a rare and unique occurrence.
In the Haukadalur Valley, you’ll find the Strokkur geyser. It’s a neighbor to another geyser, appropriately named “Geysir” however Geysir is no longer active. Strokkur on the other hand erupts roughly every 5-7 minutes making it easy to witness multiple times if you choose to stick around for a bit.
As you wait for the next eruption you can wander the area and enjoy bubbling pools of muddy water and steam rising from the ground.
Stop 5: Thaw Out At The Laugarvatn Fontana To End Your Day
A day that starts and ends with a soak in a geothermal bath is an ideal day. You’ll finish day 4 of your Iceland winter itinerary with a stop at the Laugarvatn Fontana thermal baths and spa.
With three mineral pools of varying temperatures, steam baths, a sauna, and a lake bordering the pools if you care to take a cold plunge, you’re in for a real treat.
You’ll even have the opportunity to pay a little extra to see how rye bread is baked in the hot ground as part of a geothermal bakery tour. And of course, you’ll get to eat some bread after for the ultimate icing on the cake.

Day 5: Thingvellir, Selfoss, And The Reykjadalur Hot Springs
Day 5 of your Iceland winter itinerary will allow you to complete the Golden Circle with the third of the most iconic stops before heading towards the steam-filled valleys of Hveragerdi. Multiple continents soaks in hot rivers…the good times and stunning natural landscapes never stop.
The day offers the perfect mix of relaxation and thrilling adventure. Are you hoping to snorkel in crystal clear waters or sit by a waterfall? All this and more await you as you make your way through the Selfoss and Hveragerdi regions of Iceland.
Stop 1: Venture Between Continents At Thingvellir National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the meeting point of the Northern American and Eurasian tectonic plates, lava rock, a waterfall…surely this is enough to convince you to add Thingvellir National Park to your Iceland winter road trip itinerary.
As one of the three most iconic Golden Circle stops, Thingvellir is a thriving tourist destination, so expect crowds. Fortunately, the national park spans a large area so the crowds don’t tend to feel overwhelming.
The park can be explored any number of ways from walking the rift valley separating the two continents to taking a snorkeling tour through the Silfra Fissure .
Book Here: Silfra Fissure Snorkeling Half-Day Trip From Reykjavik
Stop 2: Take A Break And Enjoy The Conveniences Of Selfoss
As one of the larger towns outside of the capital, Selfoss is an ideal place to stop and just regroup before the next adventure of the day.
In Selfoss, you’ll have access to Bónus, Hagkaup, Krónan, and Nettó, all the major grocery store chains in Iceland.
You can also grab a casual bite to eat at a place like Subway or Pylsuvagninn (hot dogs), or you can sit down for a longer lunch in a cozy, charming spot like Þrastalundur.
This stop in Selfoss is also the perfect opportunity to fill up on gas before you head roughly 20 minutes to the next stop on your Iceland winter itinerary, the Reykjadular Hot Springs.
Stop 3: Break Up A Rewarding Hike With A Soak In The Reykjadalur Hot Springs
A 45-minute moderately difficult hike through a beautiful steam-filled valley will lead you to the ultimate reward, the Reykjadalur Hot Springs , a hot river perfect for bathing.
As you approach the area appropriate for bathing you’ll see the river is divided into sections by short rock walls that create deeper pockets of water just deep enough for you to comfortably sit in.
For an Iceland winter trip, however, you might have to hike slightly farther upstream to find a warm enough section of the river. When your legs feel rested and you’re ready to head back, you’ll return the same way you came to arrive back at your car.

Day 6: Snaefelssnes Peninsula
Waterfalls, natural bridges, basalt columns, volcanic craters…the Snaefelssnes Peninsula features a diverse landscape that offers a little bit of everything.
Visiting the Snaefelssnes Peninsula will take you back past Reykjavik and requires extra driving, but it’s a worthwhile stop.
If you’re starting to slow down towards the end of your winter trip to Iceland, you can choose to eliminate the Snaefelssnes Peninsula and spend all of day 6 and 7 relaxing in the lagoons and exploring the capital instead.
Book Here: Snaefellsnes Peninsula Full-Day Tour From Reykjavik
Stop 1: Snap A Shot Of The Iconic Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirjufellsfoss Waterfall
You might recognize Kirkjufell (church mountain) from an episode of Game of Thrones , or maybe you just saw it plastered on postcards in gift shops throughout the country. Either way, soak in the beauty of this cone-shaped mountain that dominates the surrounding landscape.
Most people just enjoy the view from Kirkjufellsfoss where you can capture both the waterfall and the mountain in one photograph. Though it’s possible to climb the mountain it must be done with a guide.
If Northern Lights viewing is on your Iceland winter itinerary, the dark skies and imposing nature of the mountain make Kirkjufell an ideal spot to enjoy the lights when conditions are appropriate.
Book Here: Snaefellsnes Peninsula And Kirkjufell Day Trip
Stop 2: Admire The Unique Londrangar Rock Formation Along The Coast
Londrangar is a short but picturesque stop best viewed from a distance to capture the complete picture of the rocks contrasted with the crashing waves of the Atlantic.
The existence of these castle-like remains of volcanic plugs is a testament to the power and resilience of nature.
Enjoy watching the seabirds riding the thermals and the sounds of the world around you that somehow manage to be simultaneously noisy and peaceful. It’s beautiful in any season, making it a perfect stop for your Iceland winter trip.
Once you’ve taken in the view from afar, you can choose to get a closer look at the unusual rock formations by starting at the lighthouse at Malarrif and making your way over.
Stop 3: Make Your Way Across Arnarstapi’s Natural Bridge
Have you ever wanted to walk across a natural bridge with the ocean waves gently lapping below you? Now’s your chance to add it to your Iceland itinerary for winter.
The small fishing village of Arnarstapi is home to an impressive natural bridge that’s wide enough for you to comfortably walk over.
The bridge isn’t always the easiest to find (it’s not Gatklettur, an arched rock you’ll come across earlier along the coastline), but as you continue along the coast from the stone statue of the half-troll/half-man Bardur Snaefellsas, past Gatklettur, to the sign labeled “Midgja,” you’ll find the bridge.
Stop 4: Embrace The Moody Darkness Of The Búdir Black Church
The Búdir Black Church is the ideal place for moody photographs. It’s a striking sight any time of year but is particularly perfect for an Iceland winter itinerary when the black of the church is contrasted with the surrounding landscape blanketed in snow.
This church has stood in various forms of disrepair and reconstruction since 1703. With the ocean on one side and mountains and glaciers on the other, its isolation within a small village makes it particularly unique.
Add Iceland’s often gloomy weather conditions and the surrounding church graveyard and you have yourself quite the eerie but fascinating site.

Day 7: Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, And Sky Lagoon
The final day of your 7-day winter Iceland Itinerary has the potential to be the most relaxing. You’ll have the option of visiting two of Iceland’s most luxurious geothermal baths while sipping on a drink and reminiscing about your trip.
Follow that up with a stroll through the colorful streets of Reykjavik as you learn about Iceland’s rich history and culture. With all the amenities and conveniences of a larger city, you’re sure to enjoy your time in the capital.
Stop 1: Soak In The Healing Waters Of The Blue Lagoon
At this point, the Blue Lagoon is practically synonymous with Iceland. It’s an iconic tourist spot that has evolved over the years from a local hangout to a luxury tourist destination.
Mineral-rich waters, a swim-up bar, and a striking lava rock backdrop make for an ideal day of relaxation. Even the most basic entry ticket is pricey, but it’s worth experiencing at least once in your life.
If you’d like to make a soak in the milky-blue water of the lagoon a part of your Iceland winter itinerary, you’ll need to make sure you book your tickets weeks if not months in advance.
Book Here: Golden Circle & Blue Lagoon Small-Group Tour
Stop 2: Enjoy A Seven Step Spa Ritual At The Sky Lagoon
What’s better than a luxury bathing experience in geothermally heated waters in the land of fire and ice? Not even having to leave the capital to have this unforgettable experience.
The Sky Lagoon is a newer addition to Iceland’s geothermal pool landscape, but one that has quickly become a favorite of both locals and visitors alike.
Rugged rock walls, an infinity pool that offers stunning views of the ocean, and a swim-up bar make the Sky Lagoon an enticing place to recover from your adventurous Iceland winter trip.
The seven-step ritual however is what truly sets it apart from other luxury bathing experiences such as the Blue Lagoon.
The seven-step ritual begins with a soak in the lagoon, followed by a cold plunge, a 10-minute sauna experience, a cold fog-mist, the use of an exfoliating body scrub, the steam room, and finally a shower, and additional time spent enjoying the lagoon.

Stop 3: Explore The Landmarks and Museums In The Reykjavik City Center
One week in Iceland in winter is best spent road-tripping through the country’s unique and impressive natural landscape, but the charming capital city of Reykjavik can be a welcome change of pace.
Downtown on Laugavegur and the surrounding streets you’ll find restaurants, cafes, bars, and souvenir shops.
Reykjavik is also home to some of Iceland’s most fascinating museums such as the Arbær Open Air Museum which displays old Icelandic sod roof buildings as well as the Maritime Museum on the harbor.
Before leaving, you’ll want to visit one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks, the Hallgrímskirkja Church which offers stunning views of Reykjavik and beyond.

8 day Self-drive tour | Ring Road Highlights

The guide Sola was very good and helpful!
The Iceland Complete-Small Group tour showed the incredible variety of the different parts of Iceland. From multi-varied waterfalls to active volcanoes and extensive glaciers. Each day’s itinerary was interesting and spectacular. The driver was a mine of information and I couldn’t have wished for a better trip. ?
Our guide; Snorri Sigurdsson, was outstanding. Not only did he do a great job of showing us the wonders of Iceland, he got me right to a hospital after I took a fall. He was very invested in his job, took an interest in all fifteen of us, and made an effort to talk to us all. I was very impressed with his fluency in both English and French. Whatever he told us In English, no matter how long, he would immediately repeat in French for our five French travelers. My wife and I highly recommend him.

Why Iceland is a Great Solo Travel Destination
Iceland is not only a superb place to travel solo in Europe , but also one of the best global destinations for single travellers . This is especially the case for solo female travellers and those who are on their first solo trip .
Safety is one of the main concerns of solo travellers , particularly women who are travelling alone. The crime rate in Reykjavik is so low to be almost zero.
Therefore, there is little chance of you getting robbed or being subject to physical risk. Harassment is also rare.
As a solo traveller in Iceland, it is easy to book excursions to suit your tastes online or via one of the agencies on Laugavegur in downtown Reykjavik. Iceland is also a mecca for outdoor activities .
And if you want to treat yourself, Iceland is made for splurging . Linger over a meal at one of Reykjavik’s excellent restaurants or buy that handmade Icelandic jumper you have been eyeing up.
>>> Start planning your solo trip to Iceland with these inspirational quotes about travelling alone .
What is the Best Month to Visit Iceland?
There is no absolute right or wrong time of year to visit Iceland.
Iceland’s average temperatures are higher than you might expect, given its position in the North Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the moderating effect of the Gulf Stream, Reykjavik’s average winter temperature is 0 degrees; in summer this reaches a giddying 12 degrees.
But, for me, the bigger consideration is the number of daylight hours . In midwinter, the sun doesn’t rise until 11.45 am, setting again at 2.45 pm. Whilst this might be optimal for Northern Lights chasing, it limits daytime activities.
Contrast that with mid-summer. Here, we are looking at 24-hour light, with the sun setting at midnight, and twilight persisting until it rises again at 3 am.
Therefore, the time of year that you visit Iceland may largely depend on the number of daylight hours that you feel comfortable with, and whether you want to see the Northern Lights.
In my view, Feb/March or Oct/Nov are good times to visit Iceland. There are enough daylight hours to allow you to sightsee, but you will also be able to see the Northern Lights if they decide to come out to play.
When I visited Reykjavik in March, there were around 11 hours of daylight.
What Should You Bring to Iceland?
First and foremost, warm clothing, whatever time of year you are visiting Iceland. This means a hat, scarf, gloves, layers and a warm, preferably windproof, coat.
A refillable water bottle. Don’t buy bottled water when you are in Iceland. Not only is this not eco-friendly, but it is also completely unnecessary. Icelandic water is pure and delicious straight out of the tap. Just let the water run for a minute before filling your bottle.
Zip-Loc freezer bags for your packed lunch. More on that later.
What Should You Leave at Home When Visiting Iceland?
Your umbrella. Seriously. Those Arctic gusts spell instant death for brollies and carrying one will instantly mark you out as a tourist.
Money in Iceland
Iceland’s currency is called Króna (ISK). Due to the lack of subdivisions, get used to seeing lots of zeros.
It’s worth noting that the Króna has no value outside of Iceland. Therefore, you should not exchange large amounts of currency, and you should change it back before you leave.
Also, as you are unlikely to be able to get hold of Króna in your home country, you will need to change currency on arrival. It’s best to do this in downtown Reykjavik rather than at the airport.
The good news is that Iceland is almost a cashless society . Credit cards rule supreme and can be used for even the smallest of purchases.
I did not change any currency and used my credit card for the entire duration of my trip to Iceland. But check that your credit card provider will not charge you an extortionate fee for using your card overseas.
Iceland Solo Trip Costs
Iceland is an expensive country in which to live.
Accommodation and food & drink are much to blame. Eating & staying in Reykjavik will cost you 44% more than the average in the EU.
However, booze is the real budget-buster. A glass of your favourite tipple is likely to cost 123% more than it would in an average European country.
But fear not. Even when travelling alone, it is possible to visit Iceland on a mid-range budget without resorting to staying in a hostel or letting a single Pot Noodle pass your lips.

How to Save Money When Travelling to Iceland as a Solo Traveller
Let’s take a look at how a solo traveller can visit Iceland on a budget.
Accommodation in Iceland: Money-saving tips for solo travellers
Accommodation in Iceland does not come cheap. To save money on lodgings, conventional wisdom applies:
- Get the best possible deals by using price comparison websites , for example, Google Hotels.
- Consider self-catering accommodation, through Airbnb or Booking.com . This will also save you money on food.
That said, I did the opposite.
I got a great deal three weeks before departure with BA Holidays .
This bundled flights at convenient times and to/from convenient airports with a centrally-located three-star hotel that included breakfast. The deal cost marginally more than the hotel alone if I had booked these separately.
Eating out in Iceland: Money-saving tips
Eating out in Iceland is relatively expensive.
A main course in a mid-range restaurant will set you back between 2,000 and 4,000 ISK. For this reason, Icelanders consider dining out to be a treat.
Here are my top tips for solo travellers to save money when eating out in Iceland.
- Bring some snacks from home . Whatever your fancy, these are good for munching on when you are feeling peckish or to form part of a packed lunch on the go.
- Bag a good hotel deal that includes breakfast. Not only will this set you up for the day ahead, but you may be able to assemble a packed lunch. Trust me … I wasn’t the only person doing this at breakfast. Whilst I was at least trying to be discrete, a group of four at an adjacent table had a production line going, complete with proper sandwich bags. I was seriously impressed.
- Alternatively, stay in self-catering accommodation where you won’t be reliant in dining out.
- When in Reykjavik, keep your eyes peeled for lunchtime lunch deals .
- Tipping is not expected in bars and restaurants in Iceland
Saving money on alcohol in Iceland
Alcohol is eye-wateringly expensive in Iceland. A local beer, for example, is likely to cost 1,000 ISK. Reckon on spending at least 1,400 ISK for a glass of unremarkable wine.
Despite this, Reykjavik has a vibrant bar scene and you should not deprive yourself of the chance to try the excellent local beer. But, if you’re not careful, alcohol can make your trip to Iceland expensive.
Here are my tips on how to reduce your Iceland trip costs when it comes to booze but still have a good time.
- Keep drinking out to a minimum
- Instead, buy booze before arriving at your accommodation. Pack alcohol in your checked luggage or buy a bottle or two at Duty-Free in your departure airport. Or do as the Icelanders do and stock up in the Duty-Free shop in the Arrivals area at Keflavik Airport.
- Don’t rely on buying alcohol from a supermarket . Prohibition was only fully repealed in Iceland in 1989 and its accessibility is relatively limited. It can only be purchased in state-run off-licences (ÁTVR), which are only open during office hours.
- If you are drinking out, take advantage of the numerous happy hours around Reykjavik. Again, learn from the locals, and download Reykjavik AppyHour, an app that lists these. Available for iPhone and Android devices.
How Much Does a Solo Travel Trip to Iceland Cost?
Here’s the bottom line. In 2019, my three-day / four-night itinerary Iceland trip cost a total of £820 .
Here are what the cost of this trip looked like broken down:
FOOD & DRINK £110 FLIGHT & ACCOMMODATION £504 SIGHTSEEING £162 AIRPORT TRANSFERS £44
Getting Around Iceland
Can you travel around iceland without a car.
Public transport infrastructure in Iceland is relatively limited.
There is no railway, only a shrinking network of long-distance bus routes provided by just a few companies. Although there are bus services during the summer months (June – August), for the remainder of the year buses are too infrequent – or non-existent – to be useful.
Because of this, many visitors hire a car and this is likely to be your cheapest option. However, it is not your only option.
As it was winter and I am not keen on driving, I didn’t hire a car. Instead, I used bus transfer services and excursions , which are very viable alternatives to driving.
Taxis are expensive and Iceland is currently Uber-free.
How can you get from Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik ?
If you are not hiring a car, use the efficient bus transfer service to get from the airport to downtown Reykjavik.

Like most people on a short break to Iceland, I used its capital, Reykjavik, as a base. As well as being a fabulous destination in its own right, Reykjavik is the best base from which to explore Southern Iceland.
Here is my 3-day Iceland itinerary.
DAY 1: EXPLORE REYKJAVIK
After a hearty breakfast, start exploring Reykjavik . As Iceland’s capital is so compact, it is a breeze to navigate on foot.
Don’t miss the following:
Hallgrímskirja
This geyser-shaped modern church is Reykjavik’s most iconic sight.
Make sure that you take the lift to the observation deck at the top of the church. With its tower standing 73 meters high – the tallest church in Iceland – you will get fantastic 360-degree views of Reykjavik.
Grjóti village
The colourful buildings that you are able to see from Hallgrímskirja’s tower are clustered around Grjóti village, the oldest neighbourhood in Reykjavik.
Harpa
Reykjavik’s controversial harbourside concert hall. Take the lift to the 5 th floor to fully appreciate its honeycombed glass walls and ceiling, and for great views over Reykjavik harbour.
Sólfar (“Sun Voyager”)
This sculpture, created by the artist Jón Gunnar Áranson, represents a dream Viking longship floating off to a new beginning towards the setting sun.

DAY 2: TOUR THE GOLDEN CIRCLE
Day 2 of your Iceland itinerary and it’s time to leave Reykjavik to explore the country’s rugged interior. Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, a 300 km circular route that loops from Reykjavik into central Iceland, is not to be missed.
These are the main Golden Circle stops :
Thingvellir National Park
A rift valley where the American and Eurasian continental plates meet, and the site of the longest functioning parliamentary assembly.
Geysir
A thermal area of bubbling sulphurous pools where the mighty Strokkur geyser, reliably puts on a performance every five minutes or so.
Gullfoss
A dramatic waterfall f ormed by twin cataracts thundering into a narrow gravel canyon of the Hvitá river.
And you may also get an opportunity to pet an Icelandic horse .

DAY 3: VISIT THE BLUE LAGOON
Views are divided on this famous natural hot spring. Is the Blue Lagoon a complete tourist trap or a must-see destination on any Iceland itinerary?
I did debate whether to go there but, being a completist, I felt that it should be included in my Iceland itinerary. Also, I wanted to make my mind up for myself.
The verdict? Yes; the Blue Lagoon is a tourist trap but its steaming, milky waters set within a lava field is an unmissable sight.

Seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland
As elusive as they may be, Iceland is one of the best places in the world to witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the aurora borealis or Northern Lights.
What month is best to see the Northern Lights in Iceland?
The best months of the year to see the Northern Lights in Iceland are between September and March . They are at their peak in September and March, thanks to the March and September equinox .
Forget about seeing them from mid-April to mid-August as the skies are light.
Northern Lights tours from Reykjavik
There is no shortage of tours to see the Northern Lights from Reykjavik.
If you can, splash out on a small group tour, rather than travelling with a coachload of people. Not only will this be a more intimate experience, but it will also offer more flexibility to chase the lights.
As complete darkness is the key to success, these tours leave late at night. Wrap up warm.
The aurora borealis is reluctant to come out to play if the skies are cloudy. Check the Northern Lights forecast for your chances of seeing this spectacle.
If there is little chance of seeing the Northern Lights, many tour companies will cancel the trip. They will also offer you a second chance to see them if you are unsuccessful on your first trip.
Here are a few Northern Lights tour s that get good reviews from other travellers:
Northern Lights Bus Tour from Reykjavik
A four-hour bus tour to search for the Northern Lights. You will be invited to join another Northern Lights tour free of charge if the lights don’t come out to play.
>>> CLICK HERE TO BOOK THIS TOUR
Small-Group Premium Northern Lights Tour
Benefit from a small group size and included refreshments. Again, you will be able to schedule another Northern Lights tour free of charge if the lights don’t appear.
Where to Stay in Reykjavik
If you want to be in the thick of things, then the downtown area of Reykjavik, close to the Laugavegur shopping street, is your best bet. Here you will find most of the museums, restaurants and bars.
However, if you are a light sleeper be aware that there is a high concentration of bars that stay open until late in the weekend. But if you are also out burning the midnight oil, this won’t make any difference!
Mid-range – Hotel Frön
I stayed at this 3-star hotel on Laugavegur which is perfect if you are visiting Iceland on a budget but are looking for a bit of comfort. A big bonus was the free breakfast. Recommended.
>>> BOOK A ROOM
Here are some alternatives that I have found that may suit other budgets:
Splurge – Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Center
In an unbeatable location, a 2-minute walk from Laugavegur Shopping Street and 500 meters from Harpa Concert & Conference Center, this stylish 4-star hotel features a fitness centre and a bar.
Budget – Freyja Guesthouse and Suites
To reduce your Iceland trip costs, take a look at this property, a 3-minute walk from Hallgrímskirkja Church. It has excellent online reviews and is a bargain by Icelandic standards.
Iceland Group Tours for Solo Travellers
But what if you are not sure whether you are ready to explore Iceland independently? If that’s the case, why not join a group tour ?
You’ll benefit from an expertly curated itinerary and you will gain valuable insights into the country, its history and local culture.
Keeping safe when travelling is a common fear among those taking their first solo trip . But with a group tour, there’s safety in numbers.
Finally, with ready-made travel companions, you don’t have to fear solo travel loneliness or the prospect of dining out alone .
There are lots of group travel companies out there but two companies that I have used and can recommend are Exodus Travels and Explore Worldwide !
Alternatively, join a day tour when you are out there as I did. My go-to platform is GetYourGuide , which offers a broad selection of local tours with extremely generous cancellation terms.
Can You Visit Iceland as a Solo Traveller on a Budget?
Iceland is one of the best solo travel destinations in Europe, and its potential to drain your bank account should not put you off visiting. Despite the high cost of living, you will not need to take out a second mortgage on your return from a solo trip to Iceland
Bag a good deal on accommodation and exercise self-restraint when eating and drinking alcohol out. Iceland is expensive but it is worth it every Króna.
And let’s look on the bright side.
The relatively high cost of booze means that, unlike other European cities such as Tallinn or Prague, Reykjavik is yet to become stag party central. And surely that has to be a good thing?

From the modern city of Reykjavik to the volcanoes, glaciers and tortured lava formations of the interior, Iceland is a country of great contrast. This wild and wonderful walking holiday takes us across the most outrageous of Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, the southern highlands. The Laugavegar Trail weaves across the dramatic volcanic region of the Fjallabak, one of the most spectacular places for a walking holiday in the world. Driving close to Hekla, Iceland's famously active volcano, we reach the start of our trek at Landmannalaugar. From here, our first afternoon of walking takes us south into the mountains, through rocky gorges and by way of steaming hot springs to the ancient lava flows of Hrafntinnusker and our first night in a cosy mountain hut. Our route continues via Lake Alftavatn (Swan Lake) and across the extraordinary black sands of Maelifellssandur, below the Myrdalsjokull Icecap. We traverse the former summer grazing area at Emstrur and visit the magnificent Markarfljot Canyon, en route to the picturesque glaciated valley and birch woodland of Thorsmork (Thor’s Forest), where we spend our fourth and final night at a mountain hut where we will enjoy a celebratory BBQ. On our last morning at Thorsmork, we have the option to visit Songhellir Cave and to hike to the top of the small peak, Valahnukur, before catching the bus back to Reykjavik.

This is real wilderness travel, with the Icelandic landscape changing dramatically each day. The trails will change from good paths to rocky scree and expanses of black volcanic sand, from green valley pastures to windswept ridges. Especially on the first departures of the season you are also likely to encounter snow patches, some of them quite extensive. There will also be river crossings on most days and the weather can be very unpredictable. We will walk for approximately 4 to 5 hours on Days 1 and 2 and 6 to 7 hours on Days 3 and 4, with the opportunity for further exploration on the morning of Day 5. The route is generally undulating, rather than hilly, with no more than 600 metres of ascent on any of the days. This trekking holiday is suitable for any regular hillwalker, but be prepared for a unique experience. The group's baggage is carried by the support vehicle and this means you can walk with just a light daysack.
Walk the full classic Laugavegur route (named as one of the 20 best treks in the world by National Geographic) across the Fjallabak, in 5 days, with an experienced guide, vehicle support and mountain hut accommodation.
The holiday starts at 0630am at the BSI Bus Terminal, Vatnsmýrarvegur 10 on the morning of Day 1. The bus the Landmannalaugar will leave at 0700am sharp. It would be a good idea to ask your accommodation to prepare you an early breakfast that you can bring with you. Your main luggage will go in the support vehicle, so please make sure that you have everything you need for the first day in your daypack. You will need to wear your sturdy waterproof hiking boots and bring your backpack on the bus. The daypack needs to contain your water bottle, rain clothes (trousers and jacket), sunglasses, sunscreen, gloves, warm hat, and a warm sweater/jacket. If you also want to dip into the warm river in Landmannalaugar you will also need to carry a swimsuit and towel. The drive takes around 4 hours and is one of the most scenic routes in Iceland. We cross the high moorland of Hellisheidi and pass south of the steaming volcano, Hengill. We pass also the greenhouses of Hveragerdi Village, where hot water is cheaper than cold water and keeping buildings cool is more of an issue than heating! East of the Thjorsa River, we head inland and cross to the north of Mount Hekla. We now enter the black Domadalur (Valley of Doom), which is gateway to the Fjallabak (Backcountry) Nature Reserve. The Fjallabak is a huge mountainous wilderness that is constantly built up by ongoing volcanic activity and eroded by glaciers, rivers and wind. Finally reaching Landmannalaugar, we have lunch, before setting off on the first stage of our walk to Hrafntinnusker. Setting off southwards into the mountains, we cross the 500-year-old Laugahraun lava flow that is still giving heat to the Landmannalaugar hot springs. Climbing steadily past numerous sulphur vents, we top a succession of rolling rhyolite hills before descending to the steaming hot springs at Storihver. As we get higher, the better we can understand the forces of nature. Whole mountains have been created and remoulded by thousands of years of boiling sulphuric vents and glacial erosion. Up on the plateau, steam rises in all directions from unseen vents. We reach our accommodation at the Hrafntinnusker Mountain Hut in the late afternoon. Here, we meet the support vehicle for the first time since leaving Reykjavik and have access to our main baggage. Our guide will prepare the evening meal at the hut and will appreciate help with the food preparation, serving and washing up.
Accommodation
The idea that there is always some logic to landscape is proved to be false today, as we head south into the canyon complex to the south of Hrafntinnusker. Descending into the gullies of Jokultungur, we come across hundreds of steaming hot springs and mud pools. The route meanders easily southwards, crossing old snow patches and climbing to ridges where we have views across dark volcanic plains towards Alftavatn and the Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull glaciers. Crossing the southern edge of the Torfajokull Massif, we descend a long slope towards the black sands and palagonite ridges around Lake Alftavatn (Swan Lake). Arriving at the lake, one of the most beautiful locations on our route, we check in at the Alftavatn Mountain Hut.
There are several rivers to cross today, as we head southwards and towards the white ice cliffs of the Myrdalsjokull Icecap. Some of these glacial streams and rivers are bridged, but others need to be forded - a chilly experience for the feet. After a long, but gentle climb, we descend to the green oasis of Hvanngil, where there is a mountain hut. We continue our walk, crossing another couple of rivers, to reach the surreal 5 kilometre wide, black sand plain of Maelifellssandur, beneath the conical peak of Storasula. Heading now towards Hattfell, another ancient volcano, we reach the Emstrur region where farmers used to graze their sheep in summer. Before arriving at the Botnar Mountain Hut (our accommodation for the night) we visit the magnificent Markarfljot canyon which is cut almost 200 metres down into the rocks south of Hattfell.
The first challenge today is to cross the bridge across the Emstrur River. Having overcome this obstacle, we trek through the magnificent Markarfljot Canyon, which was carved out by thundering floods, caused by volcanic eruptions under the ice cap. The effects of erosional forces are visible at every step on this trip and nowhere more obvious than in the Thorsmork Valley. For the first time on our trek, we enter a green and well-vegetated valley, which becomes more luxuriant the closer we get to Thorsmork. The last part of the hike is through thick birch forest, where even the lava ridges are covered with scrubby trees and the lovely arctic flowers that bloom for a few weeks each summer. Thorsmork means Thor's forest and it is not hard to see why this lovely area should be considered to belong to a god. It is out of this world! The valley is guarded on all sides by tremendous, fast-flowing rivers and steep glacier-clad mountains. It is one of the most beautiful spots in Iceland and the favourite weekend retreat of many of Reykjavik's walkers. We overnight at one of the Thorsmork huts.
We spend the morning in Thorsmork, with the option to take it easy or to walk one of the numerous trails. One option is to visit to Songhellir Cave (Song Cave) and there is also the opportunity to trek up to the viewpoint of Valahnukur, from where we can look across to the icecaps of Myrdalsjokull (1460m) and Eyjafjallajokull (1666m). After lunch, we catch the bus back to the Central Bus Station in Reykjavik where the holiday ends. We expect to arrive at approximately 1930. From here you can walk, or take a taxi back to your accommodation.

TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION
If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.
To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.
The holiday starts at the BSI Bus Terminal at 06:30 on the morning of Day 1. After a quick briefing from the Tour Leader, you will catch the 07:00 public bus to Landmannalaugar. You will need to book your own accommodation in Reykjavik. Transfers between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik are also not included. Contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.
4 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 4 dinners are included in the holiday price.
Many places on this holiday have drinkable water from the tap to fill your personal water bottles. Please check with the leader at the various locations. Please take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle ) for days when drinking water out of the tap is not available. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.
All food is purchased in Reykjavik, with the emphasis on fresh produce and easily-prepared meals. The tour leader will prepare the group’s evening meals and they will appreciate the help of group members in the kitchen - preparing vegetables, serving the food and washing up, for example. Local specialities predominate; including excellent sea-fish and Icelandic lamb, as well as the chance of fresh Arctic char. Breakfasts will consist of porridge, muesli, bread, jam, cheese, ham, plus tea and coffee. At breakfast, snack items and sandwich materials will be made available so that group members can make up their own packed lunches. It is not possible to cater for vegetarian/vegan diets as standard on this tour. A special diet can be ordered for a supplementary cost (ISK7000/£50 (2023). The supplement will ensure that you will be supplied with balanced meals that meet the requirements of your diet. If you require another specialised diet, for example gluten free/lactose intolerant please contact the office to discuss your requirements.
Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide special diets. Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your diet with food/snacks from home. If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice. Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.
For our 4 nights on the Laugavegar Trail we will stay in cosy Icelandic mountain huts with dormitory-style accommodation and shared facilities. Sleeping bags are required in the huts. Showers are available at some of the huts, but there is a fee to use them. The huts generally do not have electricity and we recommend bringing a power bank to charge your electrical devices.
The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader. There will also be a support vehicle and driver.
Approximately £150 - £200 (in local currency) should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses, including meals in Reykjavik. You can withdraw cash from ATMs in most towns in Iceland using a credit or debit card. If you wish to bring your travel money in cash this can be changed into Icelandic Krona at the airport. Meals whilst on trek are included, so you will ony need to pay directly for meals other than breakfast whilst staying in Reykjavik. In Reykjavik there is a wide range of dining options and you can expect to pay from around 2500ISK for lunch and 4000ISK for an evening meal in a restaurant in Reykjavik.
Tipping is the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your leader and local team. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service. We recommend that you decide levels of tipping and give any tips as a group rather than from individual group members.
For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage, which should be a soft duffle bag, and a daypack. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.
For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.
The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required , and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website .
Visa Iceland
UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa for short stays.
If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.
Vaccinations
You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations.
GHIC / Medical cover
UK residents should carry a free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment when you're visiting an EU country or Switzerland. This is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is vital when travelling overseas.
The unit of currency in Iceland is the Icelandic Krona.
Getting some additional exercise before coming on an active holiday makes a lot of sense. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience.
Despite its location on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Iceland is not the cold country we sometimes imagine. The island benefits from the influence of the Gulf Stream, which bathes its south, west and north-west coasts, giving the country a temperate oceanic climate (relatively mild winters and relatively cool summers). In Reykjavík, average temperatures are between 0 ° C in January and 12 ° C in July. In winter, they are slightly lower in the northeast and in the east, due to the Greenland polar current. In fact, only the interior of the land experiences really low temperatures, which can drop below -15 ° C. The rains are more abundant in the south than in the north. As for the winds, they are very frequent and sometimes strong. The only thing certain about Icelandic weather is that it is extremely changeable, so you should be prepared for four seasons in one day, though generally it is warm and sunny in summer.
December, January and the first half of February have little daylight (from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. approximately), but, on the other hand, from May to mid-August it is permanent. June has beautiful light and long days.
As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware ’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.
KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.
KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.
Mal og Menning. Fjallabak. Hekla - Laki. 1:100,000 scale.
The Icelandic maps published by Mal og Menning are good. The above map covers the area of the trek in detail. There are also general maps at a smaller scale, such as Island (covers the whole island) at a scale of 1:600,000.
It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation. When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.
For appropriate insurance cover we recommend Campbell Irvine Direct. Please go to our Travel Insurance page for further information and to get a quote.

Iceland is a totally different country, well worth visiting, we will return. Go there expecting and prepared for rain every day then the dry days are a good bonus. This is a very popular trek full group size of 16 appears normal. Good food on the trek, everyone helps with preparation or clean up in the remote mountain huts. We wish we'd booked the optional extension to the trip but are unsure if its offered by KE.

Daily itinerary
Day 1 - The Golden Circle
Today marks the beginning of your thrilling 8-day adventure. As you're picked up, you'll have the pleasure of meeting your knowledgeable guide and getting to know the rest of your group. The real excitement starts with the Golden Circle tour, an absolute must-see when visiting Iceland. This tour takes you to some of the country's most captivating attractions.
First on the itinerary is Thingvellir National Park, an extraordinary place that holds a significant spot in Icelandic history. Not only is it one of the country's three national parks, but it's also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The reasons for this prestigious recognition become clear as you delve into the park's rich history. It was here that Iceland's earliest settlers established the Althingi, the world's oldest surviving Parliament, way back in 930 AD. Walking through these ancient grounds allows you to step back in time and witness the birthplace of Icelandic democracy.
The park's unique geographical location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge offers a remarkable spectacle. You can see the visible boundary where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates emerge from the Earth, a testament to the Earth's dynamic nature.
After exploring Thingvellir, you'll embark on a short journey to two more captivating attractions, the Geysir geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall. Geysir is a geothermally active area that provides a captivating display of nature's power.
Here, you can witness the famous hot spring Strokkur erupting every few minutes, shooting scalding water into the air. It's a mesmerizing sight that offers a glimpse into the geothermal forces that shape Iceland's landscape.
Continuing the adventure, you'll go to Gullfoss waterfall, the "Golden Falls." This majestic waterfall is considered one of Iceland's most iconic natural wonders.
Plunging down two rocky tiers, Gullfoss showcases nature's raw power and beauty as it cascades 104 feet (32 meters). Standing near this magnificent waterfall is an experience that will leave you in awe of the Earth's immense forces.
As the sun sets on your first day, you'll find yourself in Hella village, a charming area close to the Golden Circle. Throughout your journey, you'll have the pleasure of staying in countryside accommodations, which offer comfort and fantastic opportunities to witness the mesmerizing dance of the northern lights, should the skies bless you with clear views.
Prepare for a week filled with natural wonders, cultural immersion, and unforgettable moments in the enchanting landscapes of Iceland.
Day 2 - The South Coast & Glacier Hike
Get ready for an unforgettable second day as you embark on a journey down Iceland's mesmerizing South Coast, renowned for its breathtaking beauty. Leaving your cozy accommodations behind, you'll be surrounded by a diverse tapestry of landscapes. Rolling farmlands, winding rivers, and fascinating waterfalls like Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss will greet your eyes, painting a picture of natural wonder.
To your right, the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretches out, its azure waves harmonizing with the Nordic ambiance. Along the way, there will be ample opportunities to pause, capture photographs, and fully immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring surroundings. Brace yourself for an additional thrill today, a glacier hike on Solheimajokull.
As you embark on this glacier adventure, you'll tread the icy terrain, navigating through deep crevasses and rugged ridges. The panoramic vistas that unfold before you are simply breathtaking. The glacier's surface boasts a mesmerizing shade of deep blue, while the snowy peaks bear the marks of volcanic eruptions, displaying a striking contrast of blackened ash.
Before retiring to your accommodation, either in the charming coastal village of Vik or its vicinity, you'll visit the world-famous Reynisfjara black sand beach. Here, you can witness the basalt stacks, natural formations sculpted over time by the relentless forces of wind and water. Marvel at the intricate patterns and feel the power of nature as you walk along the dark volcanic sands.
Vik offers more than a place to rest your head. It presents an ideal opportunity to savor the delights of traditional Icelandic cuisine, tantalizing your taste buds with mouthwatering local dishes. Additionally, you can explore the village's shops, brimming with handmade handicrafts that make for unique souvenirs and gifts to cherish.
The South Coast adventure promises an incredible blend of natural wonders, thrilling glacier hiking, and cultural encounters. Get ready to create lifelong memories as you delve deeper into Iceland's captivating landscapes and immerse yourself in its rich heritage.
Day 3 - Jokulsarlon & Ice Caving
Get ready for an extraordinary day, as the third leg of your journey unveils some of the most captivating sights in Iceland. As you traverse the vast expanse of Skeidararsandur, the black sand desert, the majestic panorama of Skaftafell National Park unfolds before you. Steep mountain ridges, pristine ice sheets, and dramatic wooded slopes create a scene from a postcard.
Continuing your adventure, you'll stop at the renowned Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, undoubtedly one of Iceland's most iconic and breathtaking locations. Here, witness the mesmerizing spectacle of pure white and cerulean blue icebergs breaking away from the colossal Breidamerkurjokull glacier and gracefully floating in the lagoon.
The sight is nothing short of awe-inspiring, offering a true connection with the power and beauty of nature. Keep a keen eye out, as you might be lucky enough to spot seals frolicking in the water or basking on the icebergs.
The wonders don't stop there. Brace yourself for an exclusive adventure as you explore the enchanting interiors of an ice cave. This unique experience allows you to venture into the heart of a glacier, revealing a dazzling array of colors that will captivate your senses.
Descending into these icy passages fills you with a thrilling sense of exploration and wonder. If you're visiting between October and April, you'll have the chance to explore a cave in the Vatnajokull glacier. For those traveling at other times of the year, the frozen world of the Myrdalsjokull glacier awaits your discovery.
After an exhilarating day, you'll settle in for the night in the vicinity of Vatnajokull glacier, ensuring you're immersed in the enchanting atmosphere of this icy wonderland. As darkness falls, be prepared to witness the ethereal dance of the northern lights, painting the night sky with vibrant hues if conditions are favorable.
Day 4 - The East Fjords
Today, get ready to embark on a journey to the enchanting East Fjords, a region in Iceland known for its untouched beauty and breathtaking wilderness. As you venture deeper into this remote area, a sense of peace and tranquility will wash over you, creating a genuine connection with nature like no other.
The East Fjords, with its minimal development, offer an ideal environment for wildlife to thrive. Keep your eyes peeled as you explore, as there are excellent chances to spot herds of wild reindeer roaming freely in their natural habitat. Witnessing these majestic creatures in the untamed wilderness is a truly awe-inspiring experience.
You'll encounter several stops defying your imagination throughout the day. Marvel at the beauty of Lake Lagarfljot, known for its mysterious legends and picturesque surroundings. The sweeping fjords of the East will leave you spellbound with their towering cliffs and pristine waters. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to visit charming fishing settlements, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and perhaps sample some delicious seafood delicacies.
For those seeking to make this day even more unforgettable, you have a couple of options.
You may add on a horse riding tour during the booking process. Hop on the back of a friendly Icelandic horse and traverse the stunning snowy countryside. Feel the crisp air against your face as you ride through the winter wonderland, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Alternatively, you can treat yourself to a rejuvenating experience at the Vok baths. These geothermal baths offer a soothing soak in warm, mineral-rich waters, allowing you to unwind while marveling at the stunning landscapes that surround you.
As the day draws to a close, you'll find comfort in the accommodations in the Eastfjords area. Let the tranquility of the surroundings wash over you as you unwind and reflect on the extraordinary experiences of the day.
Day 5 - Lake Myvatn & Dimmuborgir
You'll spend day five exploring the staggeringly beautiful geothermal region around Lake Myvatn. This area encapsulates everything that makes Iceland unique, with its bubbling mud pools, captivating lava formations, and geologically fascinating features.
Lake Myvatn is also known as "Fly Lake." During the winter months, you'll be pleased to know that the flies are nowhere to be found, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake and its dramatic volcanic landscapes.
One of the notable attractions at Lake Myvatn is Dimmuborgir, an area characterized by its peculiar rock formations that resemble a dark and mystical fortress. These formations have sparked legends of being the home of Christmas trolls, adding a touch of enchantment to the surroundings. Additionally, Dimmuborgir has been a captivating backdrop for various films and television series, contributing to its otherworldly allure.
Another captivating site in the area is Namaskard, a geothermal area featuring bubbling mud pools and steaming fumaroles. It's a unique setting to witness the natural forces at work.
A local custom involves burying containers filled with dough made from sweet rye bread in the geothermal area overnight. The result is a deliciously baked bread, cooked slowly by the earth itself.
Continuing your journey from Myvatn, you'll stop at the majestic Godafoss waterfall. This waterfall holds historical significance and breathtaking beauty, making it a must-see attraction. As you drive through the Vikurskard mountain pass, take a moment to absorb the impressive vistas of the surrounding Eyjafjordur fjord and the snow-capped landscapes, creating a truly picturesque scene.
Soon, you'll arrive in Akureyri, a charming town where you can look forward to exploring its many attractions. The town boasts a variety of museums, shops, and cafes, providing ample opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture and indulge in delightful Icelandic cuisine.
Before retiring to your accommodation for the night, keep an eye on the sky. If the clouds clear, you may be fortunate enough to witness the mesmerizing dance of the northern lights. This natural phenomenon, with its vibrant colors illuminating the night sky, is a sight that will leave you in awe.
Day 6 - Whale Watching and North Iceland
On your journey to West Iceland, take a moment to explore the serene and picturesque village of Hauganes in the north.
Despite its small population of around 140 people, this village exudes a captivating charm. Stroll along the black sand beach, where the rhythmic waves create a soothing atmosphere. As you wander towards the harbor, marvel at the sight of fishing boats gently bobbing up and down in the sparkling ocean waters.
For those seeking adventure, an exciting opportunity awaits in Hauganes. Join a thrilling whale-watching tour departing from the harbor and venture into the vast ocean, searching for these magnificent creatures.
Keep your eyes peeled for the great Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Harbour Porpoises, and White Beaked Dolphins frequently spotted in the area. You might even catch a glimpse of other majestic species, such as Orcas or the colossal Blue Whales. Witnessing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is an awe-inspiring experience that will leave a lasting impression.
After your memorable encounter with marine life, you'll continue your journey and arrive at your accommodations near the charming town of Borgarnes.
Before retiring for the night, unwind in the hotel's inviting hot tub. As you soak in the warm waters, tilt your head back and gaze up at the night sky, hoping to witness the enchanting spectacle of the elusive northern lights. If the conditions are favorable, these dancing ribbons of light will paint the darkness with their ethereal glow, creating a truly magical and unforgettable sight.
Take this opportunity to rejuvenate both body and mind, surrounded by the tranquility of Borgarnes and the natural wonders of the Icelandic night sky. As you prepare for a restful night's sleep, reflect on the adventures and discoveries that await you on the next leg of your Icelandic journey.
Day 7 - Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Prepare for an unforgettable day of exploration as you delve into the wonders of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This region is a treasure trove of breathtaking landscapes, towering mountains, rugged cliffs, vibrant birdlife, and ancient fishing villages, offering an immersive experience of Iceland's natural beauty.
Your journey begins with a visit to Gerduberg, a cliff adorned with hexagonal basalt columns. These striking rock formations create a magnificent display, showcasing the unique geological wonders of the peninsula. As you stand in awe of nature's artistry, take a moment to appreciate the intricate patterns and formations crafted over centuries.
Next, you'll venture to Ytri-Tunga, where you'll encounter an unusual sight in Iceland - a pristine golden sand beach. Unlike the volcanic black sand beaches commonly found in the country, Ytri-Tunga's sandy shores offer a distinct charm.
But what truly sets this beach apart is the presence of playful seal colonies lounging just offshore. Observe these delightful marine creatures as they bask in the sun and gracefully navigate the coastal waters.
Continue your exploration as you go to the enchanting black pebble beach of Djupalonssandur. To reach this secluded shoreline, you'll traverse a natural maze of free-standing lava pillars, creating an otherworldly atmosphere reminiscent of a fairy tale.
Throughout your journey, the majestic presence of the Snaefellsjokull glacier will watch over you. This colossal glacier, immortalized in Jules Verne's famous novel as the gateway to the center of the Earth, adds an air of mystique and wonder to the landscape.
No visit to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula would be complete without paying homage to Kirkjufell mountain, an iconic landmark known for its majestic beauty.
This picturesque peak served as the backdrop for Game of Thrones, where it was featured as the "mountain like an arrowhead" beyond the Wall. Capture the essence of this captivating location and immerse yourself in its stunning scenery.
As the day draws to a close, return to your accommodation, ensuring a restful night's sleep.
Day 8 - West Iceland
As your Icelandic adventure draws to a close, your final day will be dedicated to exploring the enchanting landscapes of West Iceland, leaving you with lasting memories of this remarkable country.
Begin your day by visiting Deildartunguhver, an extraordinary natural wonder and Europe's most powerful hot spring. Here, boiling water surges from the earth, stained red by minerals, while steam gracefully envelops the surrounding area. This geothermal marvel is a testament to Iceland's geologically active nature, offering a glimpse into the forces shaping the land.
Next on your itinerary is Reykholt, a place steeped in historical significance. This humble settlement holds a special place in Icelandic history as the former homestead of Snorri Sturluson, a renowned poet, author of sagas, scholar, lawmaker, and chieftain. Snorri Sturluson's contributions during the Middle Ages were profound, making Reykholt an important cultural and intellectual hub of its time.
Continuing your journey, be enchanted by two contrasting yet equally stunning waterfalls, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar is a series of delicate rivulets that meander through the dark lava field, creating a picturesque spectacle as the crystal-clear water seeps through the porous rock formations. Meanwhile, Barnafoss showcases the intense power and vibrant blue hue of rushing waters as they cascade through a narrow gorge, leaving a lasting impression on all who witness its beauty.
For your final adventure, you can choose to explore the magical world beneath the surface as you embark on a lava-caving experience. Vidgelmir, a renowned lava tunnel in West Iceland, unveils breathtaking formations and sculptures of ice, showcasing the unique artistry created by the dynamic interaction between fire and ice. Even those with limited mobility will find the journey manageable, thanks to a well-maintained footpath that guides you through this underground wonderland.
As the day draws to a close, you will be chauffeured back to Reykjavik, where you can reflect on your incredible journey. Whether you choose to gather in a cozy pub and exchange stories with fellow travelers or savor a delectable meal at an acclaimed restaurant, let the vibrant atmosphere of Reykjavik serve as the backdrop for reminiscing on the unforgettable moments and experiences that have enriched your Icelandic adventure.
What to bring
Good to know.
Customers traveling on their own will receive a single room. Reservations for two people will be allocated a double room. For bookings of three or more, triple rooms will automatically be issued. For example, a group of eight will receive two triple rooms and one double. If these arrangements do not meet your requirements, don't hesitate to contact the provider.
Each guest can take one item of carry-on luggage on board. Other luggage can be stored in Reykjavik for a low cost.
The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and, therefore, cannot be guaranteed, but this itinerary is designed to maximize your chances to see them if the weather allows. Please be advised that there is no specific northern lights hunt on this tour, but your guide will notify you if the conditions are favorable and advise you on how to spot them.
It can happen, in the case of extreme weather, that an activity is canceled. If your chosen activity is canceled, we will assist you with rearranging or booking other activities when possible, and any potential price difference will be refunded to you.
Please note that only pick-up and drop-off from designated pick-up locations in the greater capital area are available, not from Keflavík International Airport. Therefore, attempting to start this tour on your arrival day in Iceland is not recommended. Arrival time back to Reykjavik at the end of your tour can vary depending on weather and traffic.
It is highly recommended not to book your flight home the same night, as bad weather or delays could affect your journey. Please arrange accommodation for this evening and an airport transfer the next day to take you to Keflavik International Airport for your departure.
Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations nationwide.
