Yates Climbs to Victory in Stage 4 of Tour de Romandie

News & results.

Stage 4 of Tour de Romandie 2023 exposed the riders to the hardest challenges of the entire tour. The 161.6-kilometer route from Sion to Thyon 2000 featured no less than two category 3 and three category 1 climbs, culminating on the famous Thyon 2000.

The hostilities started early, and a series of multiple attacks were launched and caught. This stage offered the chance to secure the biggest scalp of the race with a beautiful stage victory on a mountaintop – or gain a significant advantage in the general classification.

With 80 kilometers left of the race a ten-man group led the race. The group featured Ewen Costiou (Team Arkea-Samsic), Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck), early race leader Josef Cerny (Soudal-QuickStep), Ben Zwiehoff (Bora-Hansgrohe), Julien Bernard (Team Trek-Segafredo), Christopher Juul-Jensen (Team Jayco-Alula), Antoine Debons (Philippe Wagner Cycling), Thomas de Gendt (Lotto-Dstny), Lawson Craddock (Team Jayco-Alula), and Team Astana’s Gianmarco Garofoli.

With 50 kilometers left, Cerny, Zwiehoff, Craddock, Juul-Jensen, and De Gendt had formed a front quintet with an advantage over multiple groups of chasers. The weather conditions were rainy.

With 20 kilometers to go Jesus Herrada (Team Cofidis) and Michael Woods (Team Israel-PremierTech) were involved in a crash in the peloton, while Brandon Smith Rivera (Ineos-Grenadiers) launched a short-lived attack from the front of the peloton.

UAE Team Emirates took to the front of the main peloton to set a fast pace for Adam Yates and race leader Juan Ayuso. Their acceleration caused multiple breakaway hopefuls to be caught.

12 kilometers from the finish line at the top of Thyon 2000 the breakaway hopefuls had been caught by the viciously chasing peloton where the favorites were setting themselves up for victory. Jayco-Alula riders were setting the pace at the front.

With 8 kilometers left a split occurred in the peloton.

Team DSM’s Marco Brenner moved to the front of the peloton to increase the pace and team captain Romain Bardet attacked three kilometers later. Meanwhile, Ayuso was dropped.

With 6 kilometers left, EF Education-EasyPost’s Simon Carr counterattacked while Max Poole (Team DSM), Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), and Eddie Dunbar (Jayco-Alula) tried to close the gap.

Dunbar then launched a solo attack.

Later Bardet tried his luck again, but Yates was fast to accelerate and set out on a solo quest towards the finish line. Matteo Jorgenson (Team Movistar), Bardet and Brenner tried to catch up.

With 2.5 kilometers left, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) launched an attack from the chase group.

Yates crossed the finish line in solo fashion as winner of stage 4 and thereby also took the lead in the general classification. Pinot reached the top seven seconds later for his Groupama-FDJ team, while Caruso finished third having spent 19 seconds more on his bike than the stage winner. Poole finished fourth and Jorgenson was next to cross the line.

In the general classification Yates now leads Tour de Romandie 2023. Jorgenson is 19 seconds behind, while Caruso has a 27 second deficit on the leader.

Sunday’s stage 5 of Tour de Romandie 2023 is the final stage of this year’s race.

PREVIEW | Tour de Romandie 2023 stage 4 - Queen stage to decide GC, Juan Ayuso faces tough competition

Preview . Stage 4 of the Tour de Romandie is the queen stage. High in the Alps the riders will tackle a brutal stage and an incredibly difficult summit finish which should decide the outcome of the overall classification.

Whilst specific details are yet to be given, stage four of the race will be the queen stage. It is a classic aswell at the Swiss race, as the riders tackle the Rhône valley's many ascents, in a stage that culminates on the Thyon 2000 climb, where big gaps are expected. There is a total of over 4300 meters of climbing, and unlike last year the gaps will be made outside of the time-trials - on a day like this there is no hiding.

Estimated start and finish times for Tour de Romandie stage 4: 10:55 - 15:50CET

Juan Ayuso continues impressive return to racing by winning the stage 3 time-trial at the Tour de Romandie

Stage 4: Sion - Thyon 2000, 162 kilometers

There is a 2-kilometer climb at over 7% near the start where the breakaway will likely get away. It needs to be a group of strong climbers if there is any ambition of surviving, as the riders will take on three long and difficult climbs within the Rhône valley. The first of which is Anzère, 14.6 kilometers at 7% that end with 117 kilometers to go. Another small ascent quickly follows, but the riders will then prepare for the second main climb.

Anzère: 14.6Km; 6.9%; 117Km to go

Suen is another difficult challenge. Officially it's 14Km at 6.6% however the details of the climb hide an uglier truth, which is that it's last three kilometers are almost flat. Most of the ascent is in fact at a constant 8% and sees many hairpins. This one will end with 43 kilometers to go, however the difficulties that are still to come mean most will try to approach it conservatively.

TV Guide - Where and When to watch Tour de Romandie 2023

Suen: 14Km; 6.6%; 43Km to go

The descent is split into two, however riders will be fighting for positioning into the second one, as it is quite technical and directly leads into the base of the final ascent. The riders have no time to calm down and prepare for Thyon 2000 in the valley, they immediately start climbing up it. However threats of an attack at the base aren't high as it's an effort of over 50 minutes.

The climb in total is 20.9 kilometers at 7.9% and is rather constant, the first half being mostly between 5 and 7%, but the second half featuring three tiny flat sections. The gradients will be higher however overall, exceeding 10% in some sections. The ascent goes all the way into 2090 meters of altitude, it's a proper high-mountain challenge and the gaps created at it's summit could prove decisive for the outcome of the race.

"My legs feel worse every day" - Juan Ayuso modest after stunningly taking first career World Tour win following lengthy injury lay-off

Thyon 2000: 20.9Km; 7.6%

The Weather

Map Tour de Romandie 2023 stage 4

The riders should avoid the rain once again, and the wind also won't be taking much effect. Temperatures won't be high however, the descents can be quite dangerous as wet spots in the corners are likely and all are very technical.

The Favourites

UAE - Juan Ayuso is now in the lead of the race. It's a strong start to the season after a very long injury and he's immediately in the right place. He's talked of fatigue and I do believe his form is not at it's best, however I wouldn't be surprised if he can defend it - I certainly believe he's close to taking the step to join the likes of Evenepoel and Pogacar when it comes to climbing prowess. However UAE rarely race with a set leader when Pogacar is not around, and with Adam Yates sitting third it's likely that he'll be given freedom. It's UAE's race to lose I reckon.

Matteo Jorgenson - The American has been racing stupendously this spring. There's no doubt he can climb at a very high level, but he is a heavier rider than most around him and I think he'll have a hard time. With this said for sure he can hold on to a podium, I think it's both realistic and already a terrific result if he would achieve it.

Groupama - FDJ - How well could Thibaut Pinot do? He's looking sharp, the GC now seems to be impossible to win but that wasn't likely his goal. The more explosive climbs would suit him better but he's a card, whilst the brutal ascent may favour Lenny Martínez more.

Romain Bardet - Sitting over 1 minute behind Ayuso after the time-trials puts Bardet in a complicated position, where aiming for a first World Tour stage-race win is almost unattainable. However a stage win is possible, he should deal well with this kind of day and will be in search of a win.

2023 Giro d'Italia Race Center - TV, Startlist, Profile & Previews

Bahrain - Gino Mäder was on the attack in the hilly day, providing good signs. He sits 12th in the overall classification and Damiano Caruso sits 6th, both have the opportunity to ride into a podium position and won't have the pressure to put on the chasing. Additionally, their number may help with tactical moves - although this is a final climb where tactics won't honestly matter much.

Some outsiders will also be looking for a result. Out of those who can ambition a stage win I'd only put Michael Woods , although I am aware the shorter ascents would be better for him. The likes of Cian Uijtdebroeks , Simon Carr and Geoffrey Bouchard could be interesting outsiders, having shown impressive climbing prowess over these last months. Egan Bernal will be interesting to keep an eye on having finished 36th today and featuring in the GC fight - I wouldn't put him as a contender but the day suits him well and it will be good to see how well he does.

Tobias Foss at his best could also feature within the Top10 but I think it'll be a tough ask. There is room for surprises on this stage for climbers to show themselves in the World Tour. There are more experienced figures such as Louis Meintjes and Rein Taaramäe , young guns such as Oscar Onley , Max Poole and Harold Tejada and local climbers Yannis Voisard and Sebastien Reichenbach . Fausto Masnada , Kenny Elissonde and Thomas Gloag should also be in the mix.

Favorites for the young rider classification in the Giro d'Italia 2024

To compile this list, (former) editors at IDLProCycling.com were asked for their top ten in response to the question: "Who is most likely to win the Giro d'Italia?" Each top ten was assigned points as follows: 12 points for first place, 10 for second place, and then 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. For each rider, the total points received were converted into a percentage of the maximum points possible. This percentage is indicated next to each rider. This helps give a clearer view of how the odds stack up according to IDLProCycling.com!

Magnus Sheffield - INEOS Grenadiers: 8/84 points (9.5%)

In tenth place, we find a grand tour debutant, Magnus Sheffield. This May, under the mentorship of Geraint Thomas, the strong American will experience the highs and lows of the Giro d'Italia, seizing opportunities to shine amidst the grueling challenges. Sheffield is particularly strong in time trials and may well vie for a stage win in one of the two against-the-clock stages.

Sheffield has been knocking on the door especially in time trials for some time, but he is also making strides in tougher classics and smaller stage races. Despite suffering from a string of bad luck, including multiple crashes over the past eighteen months, the team at INEOS Grenadiers is hopeful that Sheffield will maintain his upward trajectory, as highlighted by his sixth-place finish at the Tour of Flanders, during his first three-week stage race.

Davide Piganzoli - Polti-Kometa: 13/84 points (15.4%)

Meanwhile, the smaller Italian teams enter this Giro with some promising climbers. Polti-Kometa is moving forward without last year's leaders, Lorenzo Fortunato and Vincenzo Albanese, but Davide Piganzoli is stepping up as the next major talent. The 21-year-old from San Marino has been making a name for himself in the under-23 circuit for several years and has now permanently moved to the pros.

Piganzoli finished fifth in the 2022 Tour de l'Avenir and achieved third place in that prestigious race last year. This year, he won the Tour of Antalya for Polti-Kometa and finished eighteenth in the Tirreno-Adriatico, after which he prepared for the Giro at altitude and in the Tour of the Alps. In that last preparation race, he finished tenth.

Mauri Vansevenant - Soudal Quick-Step: 20/84 points (23.8%)

The first Belgian on this list is Mauri Vansevenant of Soudal Quick-Step. The farmer's son is starting his third grand tour, in which he will play a free role. In recent weeks, Vansevenant has been notably active in the hill classics, securing a fourth place in the Amstel Gold Race and a sixth place in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

In the Giro d'Italia, he is part of a stage hunter team from Soudal Quick-Step, along with Julian Alaphilippe and Jan Hirt. The Belgian team relies on Tim Merlier for the flat stages, but as soon as the road tilts upwards, Vansevenant is given free rein. This strategy allows him to aim for a higher position in the general classification throughout the race.

Valentin Paret-Peintre - Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale: 25/84 points (29.8%)

Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale is having a stellar year with team leader Ben O'Connor, and the Paret-Peintre brothers, Aurélien and Valentin, play crucial roles in this success. The Frenchmen have been guiding their Australian leader through several races, making a name for themselves in the process. Aurélien won the final stage of the Tour of the Alps and placed fifth in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, while his younger brother Valentin racked up several impressive finishes.

Early in the season, the lightweight Valentin placed eighth in the Tour Down Under, then helped O'Connor secure second place in the UAE Tour. They prepared for the Tour of the Alps with a high-altitude training camp in Sicily, where O'Connor finished second and the younger Paret-Peintre fourth. This performance confirms that he is likely to be a strong climber in the Giro d'Italia as well.

Giulio Pellizzari - VF Group-Bardiani-CSF: 29/84 points (34.5%)

We've already discussed the young, talented Italians like Davide Piganzoli, but in the same vein, you can include Giulio Pellizzari of VF Group Bardiani-CSF Faizane. In fact, our (former) editors rate Pellizzari even slightly higher when it comes to his chances of winning the white youth jersey.

The 20-year-old racer, who has already attracted interest from many major teams, finished second in last year's Tour de l'Avenir. This season he hasn't yet celebrated a victory, but he impressed in the Tour of the Alps. Among the big names, he finished eighth overall, but it was his aggressive riding style that really stood out. We can expect to see more of this in the Giro.

Florian Lipowitz - BORA-hansgrohe: 42/84 points (50.0%)

Florian Lipowitz has more than earned his spot on this list as the revelation of the Tour de Romandie. The 23-year-old German, who joined BORA-hansgrohe at the end of 2022, is known for his ability to generate high power outputs, a talent that he showcased in the latter half of last season. He won the Tour of Czechia and finished fourth in the Tour of Turkey.

Lipowitz only started his season in March this year, but he quickly proved in Romandie that he can compete at the highest level. The German stood out with his dynamic racing style and nearly clinched the overall victory, if not for some tactical hesitations in the final mountain stage. Can he confirm his capabilities in his first grand tour?

Antonio Tiberi - Bahrain Victorious: 53/84 points (63.0%)

In fourth place, we find Italy's hope, Antonio Tiberi. The time trialist shares leadership at Bahrain Victorious with the veteran Damiano Caruso, who finished fourth in last year’s Giro d'Italia. The 22-year-old Tiberi, unlike his teammate, has his whole cycling career ahead of him but feels a strong urge to showcase his talent in this three-week race at the Giro.

So far this season, the Italian has performed well, finishing third in the Tour of the Alps and eighth in the Tour of Catalonia. He hopes to reveal even more of his potential, though he is still facing a real test of his abilities at the highest level.

Luke Plapp - Jayco AlUla: 61/84 points (72.6%)

In the category all-or-nothing, you'll come across types like Luke Plapp. The fast rider from Melbourne is known as a super talent, but as is typical with super talents, it's still uncertain where exactly he will land. Plapp has the engine to go far in a general classification, but it seems he has set his sights primarily on the Olympic Games this season.

With his performance in Paris-Nice, he showed that he can compete at the highest level with the world's best, but things didn't go quite as smoothly in the Tour de Romandie. Starting Saturday, we'll see what the Giro d'Italia will hold for Plapp in his first appearance at 23 years old.

Cian Uijtdebroeks - Visma | Lease a Bike: 71/84 points (84.5%)

Could the fight for the white jersey turn into a Dutch-Belgian rivalry? It's a distinct possibility, with Cian Uijtdebroeks from Visma | Lease a Bike emerging as the main candidate from Belgium. The spirited rider is entering his second major tour, fueled by a strong finish in last year’s Vuelta and aiming for a solid overall classification.

So far this season, Uijtdebroeks has raced three times for Visma | Lease a Bike. In O Gran Camino (fifth) and Tirreno-Adriatico (seventh), he performed well in support of Jonas Vingegaard, after which illness forced him to withdraw from the Tour of Catalonia. He then prepared for the Tour of Italy through altitude training, where Uijtdebroeks will aim to make his mark in the GC.

Thymen Arensman - INEOS Grenadiers: 74/84 points (88.0%)

If there’s one man on this list who knows how to perform in grand tours, it’s Thymen Arensman. The Dutch rider from INEOS Grenadiers is only 24 years old, but is already starting his seventh grand tour. For the second consecutive year, he starts as the deputy leader behind Geraint Thomas at the Giro d'Italia.

Arensman performs reliably, having finished sixth in the classification last season—a position he had already achieved the year before in the Vuelta. This season he started strongly in the Algarve and Tirreno-Adriatico, and after an altitude camp and the Tour de Romandie, all signs point to another strong performance in Italy.

Tour de Romandie: Brandon McNulty takes comfortable win on stage 3 time trial

Magnus Sheffield (Ineos-Grenadiers) in distant second as Ayuso takes overall lead

How it Unfolded

US Champion Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) put his stamp on the stage 3 time trial, winning the 15.5km race against the clock in 20:06 at the Tour de Romandie .

"It was nice. I didn't know what to expect after the last few days. I had a good ride, and maybe I was a bit lucky with the weather. It's nice to have a win," said McNulty, who was an early start under dry conditions that then turned to rain in the last half of the event.

"I was lucky to be in the dry, and it's a bit strange because you don't know if you were actually the fastest, but always happy with a win."

His fellow countryman Magnus Sheffield (Ineos-Grenadiers) was a distant second, finishing the time trial 13 seconds slower than McNulty.

It was a good day for UAE Team Emirates as McNulty's teammates Felix Großschartner finished in third place at 15 seconds down and Juan Ayuso in fourth at 21 seconds down, taking the overall race lead in Oron.

"Now we obviously need to defend because tomorrow will be a tough day," McNulty said. "We look forward to defending the jersey now."

Ayuso now leads the overall classification by seven seconds ahead of Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) and 10 seconds ahead of Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe).

The race heads into the mountains for the queen stage 4 on Saturday, a 160km race from Saillon to Leysin.

The third stage at the Tour de Romandie was a 15.5km time trial that started and finished in Oron with a loop that offered a gentle rise on the way out to the mid-route (7.9km) time check and a predominantly downhill back into Oron. Although the event started under dry conditions, the rain rolled in for the second half of the race, making the roads slippery and dangerous for the late starters.

McNulty was an early starter, setting the benchmark for the rest of the riders with the fastest opening time, 20:06.

In the first half of the starting order, few riders came close to McNulty's time until his teammate Felix Großschartner finished with 20:21. Großschartner slotted in behind McNulty and jumped Johan Price-Pejtersen (Bahrain-Victorious) down to third.

The finishing order reshuffled behind McNulty again when his compatriot Sheffield stormed over the line with a new best runner-up time of 20:19, but still 13 seconds slower than McNulty.

Racing conditions worsened as the time trial progressed, with rain and slippery roads affecting the later starters and many of the general classification favourites.

Quick times came in from Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) at 20:29, Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) at 20:38, and Thymen Arensman (Ineos-Grenadiers) at 20:43, but it increasingly appeared that none would come close to McNulty's time.

UAE Team Emirates' GC hopeful Ayuso started the day in seventh place overall, but he crossed the line with the fourth-fastest time of 20:27, which put him in a position to take the overall classification lead.

Also in the hunt for the GC, Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos-Grenadiers) finished with a time of 20:34 and moved up ten spots to fourth overall, while Vlasov finished in 20:36 and moved up to third and Van Wilder with the same time but moved up to second overall.

Australian Champion Luke Plapp (Ineos-Grenadiers) - spotted riding a brand news Giant Trinity TT bike - slipped from third place overall to seventh, finishing the time trial in 21:05. Likewise, Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), who posted a time of 21:41, slipped from second to 15th overall.

Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek), the previous day's stage winner and overnight leader, was the last rider out on the course. While he looked comfortable closing out the event under the rainy conditions, his time of 21:44 wasn't enough to keep the yellow jersey.
