  • Best time to travel: From October to April.

Welcome to Your 5-Day Tour to El Calafate - Day at Leisure

El Calafate - Perito Moreno Glacier

  • Transfer from El Calafate airport to your hotel – Dat at leisure

Southern Patagonia welcomes you with open arms. Upon arrival, we will bring you to your hotel and have the remainder of your day to relax or explore the surroundings. El Calafate is a starting point for travelers in search of adventure and treks to unearth the most fascinating natural wonders of Patagonia, such as the Perito Moreno Glacier.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world that’s still advancing. Though it’s not the only glacier in the area, it’s the one that made the city of El Calafate famous worldwide. For many years now, El Calafate has been considered the capital of the glaciers. Located at the shore of Lago Argentino (the southernmost, largest Patagonian lake) it’s also home to the Spegazzini glacier, which forms the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the Upsala Glacier, named Glaciar del Gigante (Giant’s glacier) it’s the biggest glacier that sits at the mouth of Lake Argentino.

But there is much more to see in El Calafate than glaciers. Make the most of your free day and discover other secret gems of the region.

Say Hueque Tips

Our recommended activities in El Calafate for your free day:

  • Glaciers are the main attractions that you can visit via hiking or a boat ride, but you have a lot more to discover about Argentine rural culture. On your free day, you can visit a typical Patagonian finca (ranch) and learn all about  Argentine rural culture, the traditions of the gaucho (cowboy) and enjoy a great asado (barbecue).
  • If you are really into knowing more about Perito Moreno Glacier and other famous icy giants of the region, you can visit The Glaciarium Museum and learn about the history of glaciers and their first explorers. Getting to the museum is really easy— There is a transfer you can take to the Tourist Office in downtown Calafate.

  • Perito Moreno Glacier tour: Meet the icy giant of Patagonia

During the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Glaciers National Park to enjoy the 6-hour Perito Moreno Glacier tour.   You will travel about 25 miles from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park, you will take walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and you’ll feel unbelievably close to Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall, sinking forever into the lake below.

Over the course of about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you might want to know…and things you may have never thought about. After this visit, you will take a boat ride that will bring you close enough to fully appreciate the 262-foot ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece. At the end of the day, we will drive you back to your hotel.

  • Hike over the Big Ice

Have you ever imagined hiking across the surface of a glacier? Well, this is your chance! The Mini Trekking tour will allow you to trek on Perito Moreno Glacier… This is one of our favorite Patagonia outings; we’re sure you won’t regret it.  This is an optional excursion you can add to this day.

El Calafate, Day at Leisure

Horseback riding in Calafate

  • Day at leisure in El Calafate – Optional tour: 4×4 and mountain biking

El Calafate adventures come in many different shapes and sizes. For your free day, we have an adventure suggestion that will get your wheels in motion to keep on exploring. Just ten minutes outside of town, you’ll find a 3000-foot-high hill, where you’ll have stunning views of Lake Argentino, Mount Fitz Roy and Torre.

Take a day tour to ride in a 4×4 right to the top of this hill, where you will spot the Perito Moreno Glacier emerging little by little from La Cordillera de los Andes (The Andes Range). This is also a place to find archeological treasures (like millenary shark teeth or petrified oysters) from different geological periods of Earth.

For the second part of the trip, you’ll hop on a mountain bike to get back to El Calafate. On the way you’ll stop to grab a bite, take pictures, spot wild guanacos and challenge your riding abilities with various types of terrain as you cross marshes and rocky pathways until you reach civilization again. Nature, history and adventure, all in one trip!

If you would like to add on this tour for your free day, just let your travel advisor know.

Torres del Paine Hike - Chile

Torres del Paine - Cuernos

  • Torres del Paine National: Hike inside the National Park (Chile)

In the early morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel to start your 15-hour trip to Chile and your full-day visit to Torres del Paine National Park. It’s going to be a long day of hiking, but it’s worth every minute every minute

First, we’ll drive through the Patagonian steppe for 2hr 30min (you might be able to see rheas, guanacos, Patagonian hare, and even condors!) until reaching the border of Chile in Cancha Carrera, where we’ll go through customs.

We’ll keep traveling through isolated and windy landscapes, occasionally dotted by guanacos and native green-orange-tinted bushes; you’ll truly feel the momentous solitude that characterizes Patagonia. Torres del Paine is a gift that keeps on giving; little by little it will reveal its fascinating nature, and prepare to hike this amazing park!

Along a winding road, we’ll make different stops to have a close-up view of various attractions like Cascada Paine (Paine Waterfall), Paine Range at Lake Sarmiento, and the Paine Horns at Lake Nordenskjold. Depending on the weather, we’ll depart on a 1-hour hike to reach the lake and get closer to the striking mountain peaks. At midday, after having stopped by the Lago Pehoé Viewpoint to gaze at the vastness of the French Valley, we’ll have our boxed lunch with this mountainous backdrop.

At the end of this dreamy travel experience, we’ll drive you back to El Calafate to enjoy your last evening in town.

Say Hueque Tips

  • What to wear and what to bring for this tour?

Dressing like an onion is probably the key – since weather is so variable – always be ready for some rain, wind, and sun (an extra pair of socks can be crucial!).  Bring some extra snacks and  Ziploc bags (for taking your trash back) , enough water, and sunblock too! Have it handy to use.

We have been remiss in writing to thank you and your team at Say Hueque for organizing our two weeks in Argentina. We had a fabulous time. All of the tours and especially the tour guides were excellent. Our hotels were perfect as well. We especially want to mention Ramiro Garcia, who was our tour guide and driver for our five days in Salta. We were surprised that we had a private tour. We couldn’t have picked a better guide. He was a perfect host and showed us so much of your beautiful country.

Thanks for making our trip to Argentina special and memorable. We have passed along your name to several people thinking about adding Argentina to their travel plans.

Thank you and the entire team for making our trip a wonderful experience. The accommodations were terrific. The tour guide in Santiago was particularly wonderful. Can't say enough about Patagonia Camp. The staff, yurt experience and natural beauty made the camp experience truly memorable.

Thank you again

PS what a great idea to plant trees.

We’ve been home almost a week now. Hard to believe our adventure is now just a memory. But what a great one! Hats off to the two of you for your huge efforts and contributions to making our vacation such a success.

With sincere thanks, Linda

We (my wife and I) just arrived back in Norway after a 3 week long tailer made trip to Argentina. I will just express my gratitude towards your staff who helped us make this trip a success.

They were extremely professional and helpful during the planning of our journey and during our stay in Argentina. We have travelled a lot around the world and used many different agencies to help us plan the journeys. But our experience with Say Hueque is the best so far. Immediate and nice response to our questions/suggestions and during the roundtrip everything went 100% as planned. Extremely well organized. We have already decided to come back to explore more of your country - hopefully in cooperation with Say Hueque!

All the best

I wanted to express our gratitude for your exceptional assistance in planning our recent trip to Argentina and Chile. The experience exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly thankful for your recommendations that played a significant role in creating lasting memories for our family.

Here are some highlights from our trip that we wanted to share: Glacial trek, Aldebaran Hotel - a unanimous favorite for its post-trek relaxation and rejuvenating massages, El Chalten hikes and the New Year's Eve dinner

We had an incredible journey, and your contributions made it truly special.

Thank you once again for your excellent planning and support. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best regards

My brother and I had a fantastic time in Patagonia and are so grateful for everything you did to make this such an amazing trip!! The itinerary you put together for us was perfect and we especially enjoyed the Laguna de los tres hike and big ice trek on the Perito Moreno glacier. Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

All very good I used you with my 14 year old in 2017. It is more money but there were a number of times we were impressed how on top of things your team and organization were. We forgot we locked up our money and passports in a hotel safe. Calmy people were contacted and a remedy was found. There was a definite feeling that you all were there, ready to help or to juist make sure things were going well. Really glad we asked to go to the coast; Valparaiso, Isla Negra and Nerudas house. Really no need to see Viña del Mar, too much hotel and vacationer feeling there, would have preferred something additional in Valparaiso. Peulla hotel Natura was wonderful, could have spent another night there, and done more than a small walk in that area. Glad we took the bus over the Andes and the lake crossing. Thanks much. All four of us loved it.

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

the service on the cruise was exceptional. The crew’s knowledge and passion for the region were evident in their informative lectures and their willingness to share their expertise. They ensured our safety while also going above and beyond to make our journey comfortable and memorable.

  • PAD3 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Money is a BIG problem in Argentina There is no money in Argentina. Do not book anything that requires cash. The banks are inept and can only dispense small amounts of money with high fees. Please do not book anything in advance and do not book any places that want cash. There's is NO cash here. Their economy is stuffed. I would recommend booking accom when you are about to come because if you book in advance....you are paying too much. Either bring USD in cash or you are in trouble. Some places charge 20% to use a credit card. That is because they know their money will drop in value before they get payment. Tricky landscape....but still great. Read more Written April 25, 2024
  • Adventure717207 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fine as a whistlestop tour and good value An okay excursion to El Chalten but only a couple of short walks rather than actual treks. Guide (Camilla) was helpful and informative. Probably too much time spent in El Chalten at the end of the excursion. Decent price and value for the trip but probably better options if you want to do longer treks. Read more Written April 5, 2024
  • dac55 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Glaciers are stunning We decided to go for the full "Gourmet" trip and included the disembarking at Perito Mereno Glacier. The Spegazinni Glacier was worth the time and money spent doing the sailing tour. We took a boxed lunch from our B&B as was cheaper. The pick ups were good and organization of the tour was excellent. However, if you are on a budget, just a visit to the boardwalks and a short boat ride at Perito Mereno is OK and a must do. Read more Written March 24, 2024

Secrets of Patagonia

Getting from El Calafate to Torres del Paine

Getting from El Calafate to Torres del Paine is a common transfer between Argentina’s beautiful Patagonia landscape and Chile’s famous national park. The most popular route is by arriving in El Calafate and visiting Perito Moreno and the next day departing to Torres del Paine. Here I explain the best way to get from El Calafate to Torres del Paine.

The options to get from El Calafate to Torres del Paine

You have three options available: private transfer, a bus transfer, or with your rental car. And if you really want a fast transfer, then take a helicopter from El Calafate. A trip from El Calafate to Torres del Paine takes about 5h hours with a direct transfer in private or with your rental car. Let’s explain every possibility.

Private transfer to Torres del Paine

A comfortable but one of the most expensive ways to travel to Torres del Paine is a private transfer. The biggest advantage, you plan the transfer at the time that suits you best, and the transfer is direct from hotel to hotel.

The price is mostly calculated per car and a higher price if more people join. A private transfer will cost you around USD 800 (€735) per car / one-way.

And if you want to go first to Puerto Natales, that is also possible. Which is mostly a bit cheaper.

Getting from El Calafate to Torres del Paine route

Bus transfer to Puerto Natales (Torres del Paine)

There is a daily bus service between Argentina and Puerto Natales. The next day you can take a bus from Puerto Natales to Laguna Amarga, which is seen as the start of the Torres del Paine park.

The bus takes around 5h30 to cross the border and get you to Puerto Natales.

Later you take a to Laguna Amarga. It is a 16-minute drive to the Torres del Paine Welcome Center. Most hotels and campsites also offer shuttle services from Laguna Amarga.

Currently, there are no bus services directly from El Calafate to Laguna Amarga.

Check out the schedule of the bus from El Calafate to Puerto Natales

Rent a car to the national park

Do you want some more freedom to move around? Then renting a car is one of the best options for getting to the national park in Chile.

You can easily rent a car in El Calafate and drive around in Chile. However, there is something very important. If you start your car rental in El Calafate (Argentina) then the drop-off needs to be in Argentina too. That can be El Calafate, Ushuaia, or another city that you prefer as an end destination.

Border crossing permit

Also, don’t forget to ask for the border crossing permit. This is a permit for the car to cross the border with you. The car rental agency needs to provide this. Therefore, it’s important to say that you want to drive to Torres del Paine. They will ask for your passport to arrange the border crossing permit for Chile.

When to book the rental car?

There are many car rental agencies available in El Calafate. But be aware that during high season the cars are very popular to rent. Be on time to make your reservation. Two or three months before is fine.

Car rental agencies that we recommend

Hertz is one of the most popular car rentals in El Calafate. It was a good service and pick-up was available at El Calafate airport. Also, Avis and Budget are operating in El Calafate.

Try to negotiate a price in Argentinian peso. It will save some money.

Thanks for all the great info. I am hiring a car from El Calafate airport to drive to TdP in November so I have contacted Hertz to get the necessary permit. They asked for my documentation to do this but then mentioned that the border is currently closed. I can’t immediately find any reference to this online so wondered whether you knew about this and had any further details. Thanks in anticipation

' src=

Hey Glenn – thanks for that great info. I’m travelling from El Calafate to Torres on 16 nov by bus, but cant seem to find any afternoon bus services that link with the 1.00pm arrival into Puerto Natales. The latest service is Bus Sur departing an hour earlier, so no way to link the two into Torres! Surely we don’t all have to stay a night in Puerto Natales just to travel to it the next morning! Have tried most companies on line but no luck yet, any ideas?

' src=

Hi Glen, I wonder if you can provide some advice. We are driving (rental car) from El Calafate to Torres del Paine later this month. What is the best route, taking into account the scarcity of gasoline stations? With a saloon car, is the Cerro Castillo border crossing OK – I understand it is a gravel road and with the need to drive slowly it may better to go to Puerto Natales. Also, where is the nearest point in Argentina to the border crossing that we can fill the car with fuel? Many thanks in anticipation. Ian

' src=

Who are the provides of direct bus services between El Calafate and Torres del Paine ? Do you have any links ?

' src=

Great info. How do you go back from Torres del Paine to El Calafate/El Chalten, in order to fly back to Buenos Aires? Is there a direct bus as well?

' src=

Hi Glenn, thanks for the article! Looking to have a bus transfer from El Calafate to Pudeto, to take the boat from there on. A few days later, after completing the W-trek, we’d like to take the bus back to El Calafate, from Hotel Las Torres (or Laguna Amarga). Where could I find information on the departure times, and where could I book in advance?

Have looked all over the internet, but cannot find.. Hope this is all possible? Would be very thankful!!!!

Thanks Hugo

Hello Hugo, I think I am planning to do the same trip as you: TdP to El Calafete next year. Did you find any way to do this please? I think there is a same day Grayline Tour to/from El Calafete and have tried asking if it would be possible to book transportation only (so we can spend 3 days in the park) , but so far have only been referred to their website (basically the one day tour). I look forward to hearing from you, Michael.

El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina

Home to perito moreno glacier and gateway to el chalten as well as to ushuaia., we offer full day tours to perito moreno glacier as well as ice hiking and ice climbing itineraries. we can also build in trips to el chalten..

  • El Calafate

Where is El Calafate Located?

Approx 3hrs 10min from Buenos Aires and up to 6hrs by road from Torres del Paine.

El Calafate is located in the far south of Argentina beside lake Argentino in the Patagonian region. Moreover, from the Chilean side it is just over the mountains on the other side of Torres del Paine National Park.

The city has developed as a tourist destination only because it is the base from which visitors can enter the spectacular ice field Los Glaciares National Park (a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site), which is 50km away. However, the National Park is the second-largest in Argentina covering 600,000ha of which 40% is covered by ice fields, including the famous Perito Moreno glacier.  As a result there are over 13 glaciers that descend and melt into two large lakes: Lake Argentino and lake Viedma linked by the river La Leona that flows from Lake Viedma to lake Argentino.

Perito Moreno Glacier

About 80km west of El Calafate is Ventisquero Perito Moreno (Perito Moreno Glacier) – the “big one” that everyone comes to see. For example, it has a 5km long, vertical wall of glacial ice face rising to heights of around 60m flowing some 30km from its source in the Andes Mountains.

The Breaking Off of the Glacial Ice Face Into the Lake

The main spectacle occurs when, every few years, there is a mighty breaking off of the glacial ice face into the lake. What happens is that the Perito Moreno glacier advances (one of the few in the world not to be receding) towards lake Argentino until part of it makes contact with the peninsula of land opposite (from where there is a direct viewing area). As a result of this advancement when the glacier makes contact with the peninsula it then cuts the lake Argentino into two parts creating “two lakes”. Therefore, as you look directly at the glacier, the “new” lake on the left is now closed in and cannot flow into the larger lake Argentino as it previously did.

However, the newly-created lake continues to be fed with the water from rivers and ice melt causing the water level of the lake to rise. Eventually the higher-level new lake manages to erode a hole through the Perito Moreno glacial ice dam until it flows once again into the lake Argentino.

As a result of the increased water flow this hole becomes larger, and the water flow gets quicker and more powerful it eventually causes the glacial dam to collapse. Consequently, it is this massive collapse of towering glacial ice that causes such a stunning spectacle that people flock in from all over Argentina and the World to witness it. The spectacle only happens every few years. However, even without this incredible sight, just being close to the massive glacial wall is an incredible experience in itself.

Many of our itineraries include a night or more in El Calafate.

If you have entered South America via Buenos Aires or have landed to Ushuaia from an Antarctica Expedition trip, then El Calafate will be a very useful logistical stop off. More so if you intend to go over to or are coming from Torres del Paine in Chile. In addition, if you are headed to or coming from El Chalten, then also, El Calafate will be the stop-over place. And, in visiting El Calafate it will make a lot of sense to allow a full day to go and see the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier.

Staying Over in El Calafate

We suggest at least two nights in El Calafate in order to have time to go and see the Perito Moreno Glacier, or trek on top of it. Other than that, there are other activities and excursions, so if you have the time then we can also build these into your itinerary.

If you would like us to arrange a custom-itinerary for you, please send us an enquiry.

El Calafate: The Main Places of Interest

El calafate places of interest.

The principal place of interest is the large and impressive Perito Moreno Glacier – well worth a visit. The regular Perito Moreno will involve a regular bus that takes you to the Glaciers National Park, whereupon you then have a couple of hours to walk along the well-constructed board walks that are situated right opposite the glacier. In addition, we will include a Navigation on a catamaran that navigates close to the western face of the glacier.

For those who seek adventure, there is the option do hike on top of the glacier, known as “mini trek” and then there is the more challenging option to ice climb “big ice” inside glacial walls in the glacier. Age limits apply for each of these.

This is a key trekkers destination and usually merits at least three nights here, however, there are also full day trips out of El Calafate if you just want to visit and sneak in a short trek. It requires a 3hr road transfer each way.

Panoramic Views

Another interesting option is a half day tour into the hills overlooking the city from where there are incredible panoramic views as far as El Chalten on a clear day.

Estancia Cristina

For those who wish to see and experience a real Patagonia estancia then the historic working Estancia Cristina is another full day tour that some people like to do.

Torres del Paine

Although an incredibly long and tiring day (6hr transfer each way) there is also the option to go to Torres del Paine, if you do not already have this Patagonian jewel in your itinerary.

Here at Experience Chile, we will be pleased to arrange whatever it is you seek.
