Captain Pike rides more horses than starships in the first Star Trek: Strange New World trailer

Save a horse (ride a shuttle).

Paramount has debuted the first trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the latest Star Trek series that’s centered on the USS Enterprise (the first time that a show has returned full-time to the iconic ship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005.

Strange New Worlds is technically both a spinoff and a prequel, picking up with the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in Star Trek: Discovery ’s second season, making it also a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series (given that the show is set about a decade before Kirk takes over as captain).

As such, the crew of the Enterprise is a mix of familiar and new names for fans. The ship is helmed by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), with Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, his first officer. Ethan Peck’s Spock is there, but as science officer, as is a Nyota Uhura, who’s still a cadet at this point (played by Celia Rose Gooding).

A more old-fashioned kind of Star Trek show

The trailer seems more set on establishing the overall vibe of the show, which seems pitched at trying to recapture the more episodic, exploratory style of earlier Trek series (as opposed to the more serialized nature of recent shows like Discovery or Picard ). The nostalgia factor runs strong throughout, too, with a voiceover waxing rhapsodic about the wonder of space travel and the stirring sounds of the original Star Trek theme playing in the background.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many pieces of Paramount’s resurgent Star Trek franchise on its Paramount Plus streaming service, alongside Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut on Paramount Plus on May 5th.

‘Star Trek Strange New Worlds Releases Full Trailer

Paramount+ dropped some matter, anti-matter, and dilithium crystals into the intermix chamber of its promotional warp core on Sunday, spreading anticipation of its next Star Trek adventure at superluminal speeds. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the forthcoming (and somewhat retro) new series, leaves Spacedock on May 5.

The new series, which stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, is a spinoff of the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, which just ended its fourth season. The character of Pike was originally played by Jeffrey Hunter in the Star Trek pilot in 1964. It never aired, but footage was repurposed on the show’s first season in 1966. Bruce Greenwood played the part in the first two of the recent rebooted films.

Strange New Worlds is set a few years prior to the events of the original William Shatner -led Star Trek , but features many familiar characters. Rebecca Romijn plays Captain Pike’s first officer Una (also known as Number One) and Ethan Peck is science officer Spock. Both are reprising their roles from Discovery .

Paul Wesley will play Captain James T. Kirk in the series’s second season, which has already begun shooting.

Also in the mix are Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga (both characters from the classic show) plus Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel. Interestingly enough, both Number One and Nurse Chapel were originally played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, but on different ships. Star Trek can be confusing sometimes. Christina Chong is also appearing on the show as La’an Noonien-Singh, a character with some yet-to-be-revealed relationship to the interstellar baddie Khan Noonien-Singh (played by Ricardo Mantalbán and Benedict Cumberbatch in different realities.)

This makes the fourth Star Trek series on Paramount+. In addition to Discovery , there is Star Trek: Picard , currently in its second season, plus Star Trek: Prodigy , an animated series aimed at kids on a mid-first season pause, and the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , created by Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites alum Mike McMahan , readying its third season.

The first 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' trailer is here with a cowboy Pike

The new Trek spinoff beams in May 5 on Paramount Plus.

The first teaser trailer for the next live-action "Star Trek" spinoff, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," has beamed in from Paramount Plus and it looks to be a cowboy adventure to the stars.

" Star Trek: Strange New Worlds " stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the first captain of Trek's iconic USS Enterprise starship (before Kirk was even out of Starfleet Academy) and will warp on the Paramount Plus streaming service on May 5.  The new series will focus on Pike's days in command of the Enterprise and include Rebecca Romijn star as Number One, the ship's first officer, and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock.

All three characters (and their actors) debuted in season 2 of "Star Trek: Discovery." Check out our Star Trek streaming guide to see where to watch "Discovery" online to catch up on the characters in "Strange New Worlds."

Based on the teaser , "Strange New Worlds" is bringing some cowboy action to the Star Trek franchise. It opens with Pike on horseback, galloping across a snow-covered ranch dotted with windmills as a shuttlecraft arrives.

"Chris, I need you back, Captain," a voice says, hinting that Pike's been retired (his bushy, gray beard is a big clue) but apparently there's a Federation problem only he can solve.

The crew of the USS Enterprise beam down to a planet in the first teaser trailer of

We then see a series of flashes of tantalizing alien planets — including some of the "strange new worlds" Trek is known for — as we hear Romijn's voice read out: "No matter how many stars there are in the sky; no matter how many galaxies swirl beyond our own; no matter what the mathematical probabilities, or the number times we say we are not alone in the universe; our first visit from the stars is always the province of children's stories and science fiction — until one day, it isn't."

The trailer closes with quick looks at the Enterprise crew in action. They beam down to a planet in spacesuits and walk around, then view shifts to a lush planet where a crowd has gathered and see a paper cutout of the Enterprise transition into the starship itself. The final view is of Pike himself as he gazes into space out a viewport.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is the third new live-action spinoff to join Paramount Plus's Trek TV revival, which began with "Discovery" (now in its fourth season). It follows "Star Trek: Picard" (which just returned for season 2) and also two new animated shows: "Star Trek: Lower Decks," a comedy for adults, and " Star Trek: Prodigy," a series for kids produced with Nickelodeon.

"Strange New Worlds" will bring some new characters into the mix alongside old favorites, who've been recast. Celia Rose Gooding will portray a young Cadet Nyota Uhura (the character originated by Nichelle Nichols on Trek's Original Series in 1966), while Jess Bush will portray a new version of Nurse Christine Chapel (who was portrayed by Majel Barrett) and Babs Olusanmokun) as Dr. M'Benga.

We'll also meet Hemmer, an Andorian (Bruce Horak); Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navias); and La'An Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), who sounds like a relative of the fan-favorite Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh from the Original Series  and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will beam to TV screens, exclusively on Paramount Plus , starting on May 5.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Anson Mount

“ Star Trek ” is returning home to the U.S.S. Enterprise.

In the first trailer for “ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ,” the fifth “Trek” series set at Paramount Plus , Capt. Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) is seen living in a remote winter cabin (presumably) on Earth. As fans of Mount’s tenure on Season 2 of “Star Trek: Discovery” know, Pike knows about the horrific future that awaits him, in which he’s injured so terribly that he’s trapped inside an immovable body (as depicted in the original series “Star Trek” two-part episode “The Menagerie”). Something, or someone, lures Pike back into service on the Enterprise, returning him to his crew and to the Federation’s mission of exploring the galaxy.

The rest of the trailer provides several glimpses of the vast locales that await Pike, and audiences, in the show’s first, 10-episode season — which will return “Trek” to its episodic roots rather than tell a single, season-long story. Joining him will be Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Spock (Ethan Peck), as first seen on “Discovery,” along with legacy “Trek” characters Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun). Three new characters will round out the cast: Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and Hemmer, played by Bruce Horak, the first legally blind actor to play a central character on a “Trek” TV series.

“Strange New Worlds” is executive produced by co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, as well as Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Aaron Baiers. Goldsman also directed and wrote the series premiere, with the story by Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet. The show is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will debut on May 5 on Paramount Plus in the U.S., Latin America, Australia and the Nordics, and in Canada on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streamer Crave. Additional international distribution will be announced at a later date.

Strange New Worlds release date, trailer, cast, plot and timeline for the Star Trek spinoff

The classic voyages of the original Enterprise begin anew.

star trek strange new worlds trailer

Boldly go! Of all the new Star Trek projects, Strange New Worlds probably has fans the most excited, if only because it seems poised to be the one series that feels the most like “regular Star Trek.” Just a few short years ago, it would be hard to imagine yet another Star Trek prequel whipping the fandom into a lather. And yet, Strange New Worlds is poised to really, truly, take the Trek franchise back to boldly going basics. Here’s everything we know so far.

As Discovery and Picard continue to chart a course into Trek’s future, one part of the Trek franchise is keeping a nostalgic boot firmly planted in its colorful past. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the next new series in this expanding universe, and it's swimming in nostalgia even though not a single legacy actor is involved with the project. Unlike Star Wars, Star Trek continues to boldly recast legacy characters. Here’s what that looks like for Strange New Worlds .

When is the Strange New Worlds release date?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will hit Paramount+ May 5, 2022. Season 2 is already in production. It looks like each season will be 10 episodes long.

Is there a Strange New Worlds trailer?

There are several videos that are basically different kinds of Strange New Worlds trailers. The first proper video was released in 2021 and was called “Meet the Characters.” More recently, there’s been a teaser trailer that focused on Captain Pike riding a horse, and boundless outer space optimism, in a decidedly pointed pivot away from darker, grittier, Star Trek.

What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a new ongoing TV series set in the 23rd century probably about 5 years before the classic show. It was announced on May 15, 2020, in a video message from Ethan Peck, Anson Mount, and Rebecca Romijn. The cast repeatedly suggested this project came into being because fans wanted it . The show will take place in established Star Trek continuity (Prime Timeline), but during a period that has not been extensively depicted.

star trek strange new worlds trailer

The official poster for Strange New Worlds , featuring Captain Pike on a horse.

Why is it called Strange New Worlds ?

The title "Strange New Worlds," is taken from Captain Kirk's opening narration from the classic Star Trek.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

In subsequent versions of Star Trek , this narration was changed: in TNG the "five-year mission" became "continuing mission" and "where no man" became "where no one." It's a good bet that if there's an opening narration from Captain Pike in Strange New Worlds , that he will say "five-year-mission" and "where no one has gone before." In canon, this speech is considered to be the motto of Starfleet, and in the J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek Into Darkness (which featured a different Captain Pike) it was called "the captain's oath."

Where is Strange New Worlds in the Star Trek timeline?

Strange New Worlds is a sequel to Discovery Season 2, a sequel to Star Trek: Enterprise , and a prequel to The Original Series . Presumably, the show will chronicle a five-year mission commanded by Captain Pike from roughly 2258-ish to 2263-ish. For context, this is how it shakes out.

  • 2150s-2160s Star Trek: Enterprise
  • Early 2254: Short Treks episode "Q&A"; Spock's first day on the Enterprise
  • 2254: "The Cage"; first (initially) unaired 1965 Star Trek pilot. Also, the first (filmed) appearance of Spock, Pike, and Number One
  • 2256-2258: Star Trek: Discovery Seasons 1 and 2
  • 2258-2263(?) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • 2265-2270 Star Trek: The Original Series .
  • 2270s-2290s Star Trek classic movies
  • 2360s-2401: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, TNG movies , Lower Decks, and Picard.
  • 3189-?: Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and Season 4.

Trek canon has established that Pike commanded two consecutive five-year missions on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 prior to Kirk taking command in 2265. (Though in some old canon this was 2264.) The events of "The Cage" on Talos IV happen before Discovery and Strange New Worlds , and the Short Treks episode "Q&A" happens before all of that. Pike’s temporary command of the USS Discovery in Discovery Season 2 was seemingly a blip in between back-to-back five-year missions on the Enterprise .

In theory, Strange New Worlds might have taken place between 2254 and 2257, which would then make it a prequel to Discovery and a weird midquel to "The Cage." However, Akiva Goldsman said the showrunners are not "hitting the reset button," on the characters, which confirms the series will take place after Discovery Season 2. So, 2258 or 2259 is a good bet. Goldsman also told the Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 , that various aspects of the Strange New Worlds' aesthetic will be made to look like it matches up closer to The Original Series . This means that yes, the uniforms and the design of the Enterprise have changed again, slightly .

“It's a fine line because obviously we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show. It's not Discovery . There are a few more reach-backs (to The Original Series ) and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery ] but now its its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of The Original Series , that's what we're looking to do.”

Because Strange New Worlds is literally taking place so close to The Original Series , it will be an interesting dance to see how exactly Pike, Spock, and everybody else is dressed. Will Spock switch back to a gold shirt at some point? (He wears gold in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the second TOS pilot episode.)

star trek strange new worlds trailer

Number One (Rebecca Romijn) rocking a classic TOS communicator.

Who is in the cast of Strange New Worlds ?

Here’s the full regular cast of Strange New Worlds, all crew members of on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley AKA “Number One”
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Chief Engineer Hemmer (an off-shoot of the Andorian species called an Aenar.)
  • Christina Chong as Security Chief La’an Noonein-Singh
  • Melissa Navia as Flight Controller Lt. Erica Ortegas

As of March 2022, Paramount+ started rolling out 30-second videos that highlight different members of the crew. These videos have included insights into Uhura, La’an, Erica Ortegas, M’Benga, Chapel, and Hemmer. Each video (embedded above) feels like a miniature trailer!

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds will also feature Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk. (But we don’t know if he’s a Captain, yet.)

star trek strange new worlds trailer

Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) in 2019’s Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.

How does Strange New Worlds connect to Discovery and Short Treks ?

The 2018 Season 1 finale of Discovery ended with the arrival of the USS Enterprise, though we didn't see anyone inside. 2019’s Season 2 re-introduced Pike, Spock, and Number One. Captain Pike was in every single episode of Discovery Season 2, the adult Spock started appearing from episode 7 onward, and Number One appeared in three episodes.

After that, Pike appeared in three Short Treks , "Q&A," "The Trouble With Edward," and "Ask Not." Number One and Spock only appeared in "Q&A" and at the very end of "Ask Not."

These versions of Pike, Spock, and Number One are the in-canon versions of the characters previously portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter (Pike), Leonard Nimoy (Spock), and Majel Barrett (Number One) in the TOS episodes "The Cage" and "The Menagerie." However, from a contemporary point of view, you could view Strange New Worlds as a direct spin-off of Discovery Season 2.

Who are the showrunners of Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman . At least one episode, probably the premiere episode, will be written by Jenny Lumet. As of 2021, Akiva Goldsman is the co-showrunner of Strange New Worlds along with Henry Alonso Myers. Kirsten Beyer also has revealed that she will be part of the writers’ room in Season 2.

We don't know all the directors of Strange New Worlds episodes, but Will Riker himself , Jonathan Frakes, has already said he can't wait to work with the cast:

"I’ve had great experiences with all three of them. Anson and I worked through finding Captain Pike. And Ethan and I worked through finding who Spock was. And the mantle of Spock, in particular, was so complicated and so emotionally taxing and was such huge shoes to fill, and Ethan felt it. Rebecca and I have a long relationship from back on The Librarians , and we have a fabulous working shorthand, so it will be great getting back to the floor with three old friends."

In addition to directing two Trek films in the '90s ( First Contact and Insurrection ) Frakes directed episodes of The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Discovery, and Picard . He has also directed at least two episodes of Discovery Season 3.

Akiva Goldsman also confirmed he has directed the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds . Previously, he directed the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Picard .

How many episodes will be in Strange New Worlds Season 1?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will run for 10 episodes.

How is Strange New World s different from other new Star Trek shows?

One of the biggest departures for Strange New Worlds will actually be a return of sorts. Since 2017, the various new Trek series have focused on heavily serialized seasons in which each episode must be watched in order to avoid being totally confused. Strange New Worlds is poised to return to stand-alone, episodic stories, a type of sci-fi storytelling that defined The Original Series and The Next Generation .

"We're going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic," Akiva Goldsman told Variety in May 2020. "Our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard . I imagine it to be closer to the original series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece."

Something Goldsman pointed out while on the official Star Trek aftershow, The Ready Room , was that the subgenres of Discovery and Picard were somewhat fixed, while TOS and TNG could hop genres week-to-week. Goldsman labeled Discovery as "science fiction/action-adventure" and Picard as "science fiction/drama." Some episodes of TOS and TNG are outright comedies("Trouble With Tribbles," or "Q-Pid"), while others are murder mysteries with barely any science fiction elements at all ("The Conscience of the King," or "Suspicions").

This is all to say that modern Trek seasons scan more like 10-15 hour long single episodes, whereas Strange New Worlds will focus more on self-contained episodes.

In April 2021, Goldsman doubled down on the episodic, stand-alone aspect of Strange New Worlds telling the Hollywood Reporter : “It's unlike the other [new] shows in that it's really episodic... Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs.”

Where can I watch Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will stream on Parmount+ in the United States, on Crave in Canada, with a global rollout to be announced.

Discovery, Strange New Worlds Studio Is Now the "Star Trek Stage"

  • Star Trek has a strong bond with Toronto; Pinewood Studios stage renamed to honor franchise's connection with Canada's largest city.
  • Discovery 's final season filmed in Toronto; Strange New Worlds is currently shooting in the city.
  • Paramount+ executive producer thanked Toronto for hospitality; future Star Trek productions are planned in the city.

Star Trek has called Toronto, Ontario home since the launch of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, and now one of their studio homes has been renamed to commemorate the long-running science fiction franchise's bond with Canada's largest city. One of Pinewood Studios Toronto's soundstages has been renamed the Star Trek Stage. On Discovery , the 18,000 square-foot stage is used for both the USS Discovery 's ready room and for the United Federation of Planets' space station headquarters; several other stages are used for the ship's other locations, while many outdoor scenes are shot on location in the greater Toronto area.

The stage was officially renamed during the filming of Discovery 's fifth and final season . In a statement, Paramount+'s Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman expressed his gratitude for the city's hospitality to Trek's cast and crew: "Pinewood Toronto Studios has become a second home for our Star Trek family, and we’re grateful that they’ve named a stage in honor of the franchise. In addition to the amazing stage space, we’ve benefited from working with the talented artists in front of the camera and behind the scenes and look forward to our partnership in Toronto on future series."

What Other 'Star Trek' Series Are Shot in Toronto?

Despite the impending end of Discovery 's five-season mission, Star Trek in Toronto isn't going anywhere. Discovery spinoff Strange New Worlds , which was recently renewed for a fourth season , is currently filming its third season in the city. Additionally, the newest series Starfleet Academy is slated to shoot there later this year . The Paramount+-original movie, Star Trek: Section 31 , also filmed in Toronto, and wrapped production earlier this year . While Toronto and its environs are typically called upon to represent alien worlds, the city did get a chance to play itself in the second-season Strange New Worlds episode " Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ", in which La'an Noonien-Singh and James T. Kirk had to foil a Romulan plot in the Ontario capital.

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season has the crew chasing the ancient secret behind all life across the galaxy, even as they try to outrace a new pair of implacable foes. In her review , Collider's Samantha Coley deemed it "well-paced and well-structured, with each episode offering a satisfying piece of the puzzle."

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season is now streaming on Paramount+ ; Strange New Worlds ' third season is currently filming in Toronto, and Starfleet Academy will film there later this year. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

Looks pretty Trekkie!

I think they misspelled “Whisperspeak.”

This kind of drive by stuff is trolling.

“Captain Burnham is forced to consider breaking the Prime Directive when a local tradition threatens Tilly’s life.” Sounds like the TNG episode “Justice” from season 1…

Sure, but at least it looks less stupid than Justice.

While undercover in a pre-warp society, Captain Burnham is forced to consider breaking the Prime Directive when a local tradition threatens Tilly’s life.

Tilly probably hits a ball into the one tiny forbidden area on the planet and breaks the glass, thus getting the death penalty. It happens more often than you would think.

Yah, that’s what I thought too.

I’ll settle for a recycled idea exectuted well… but to be honest, my preliminary interest into this one is low.

Holy Wesley Crusher batman. Now I know they’ve gone full canon connections.

Rayner is a great character. It’s a shame we only get one season with him. Callum Keith Rennie does a good job. I’ve liked him in his other roles. Well, we are in the final half of the season. I’m hoping they finish off strong. I have mixed feelings about DSC ending. I feel bad for all the fans who claim this is THEIR Star Trek.

It’s a shame we only get one season with him.

It’s always possible that he moves over to the Academy show.

Agreed on all counts, despite Prodigy being my #1 current Star Trek show.

He instantly makes any role he’s doing better by default. One of my favorites was Californication. He was great in that.

“Best show ever.” -Access Hollywood

Hopefully this is another good filler episode, like ep 5×4. When DIS isn’t all phasers blazing or overly melodramatic, it is much better. Plus, more Rayner please.

discovery is always overly melodramatic, always!

On a scale of overly melodramaticnes from 0 to 10 Discovery has its own scale that is in its entirety contained in the 10 of the normal scale.

There’s no such thing as filler episodes in Discovery. They’re all ‘high impact.’

Bohemian clothes and slightly different foreheads… ironically, very TOS :-)

'Under the Twin Moons'

Star Trek's Top Exec Has One Strict Rule For Any Future Shows

Star Trek: Discovery Face the Strange

Since 2015, screenwriter and producer Alex Kurtzman has been the head honcho of "Star Trek" over at Paramount. Although Bryan Fuller came up with the initial idea for the streaming era's inaugural "Star Trek" series "Star Trek: Discovery," which debuted in 2017, it was Kurtzman who completely reworked the show from its origins, hence launching Paramount+ as an all-our-eggs-in-the-"Star"-"Trek"-franchise's-basket service. Kurtzman served as executive producer on all five "Star Trek" shows that began after "Discovery," including the now-concluded "Star Trek: Short Treks" and "Star Trek: Picard," as well as the soon-to-be-concluded "Star Trek: Prodigy" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Also soon to conclude is "Discovery" itself, which is currently partway through its fifth and final season.

As of this writing, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is the only series that hasn't been definitively canceled, while the "Section 31" TV film has yet to stream. Also in the works is a "Starfleet Academy" series that is still in the early days of its production. Given the financial woes over at Paramount  and the destruction wrought by the Streaming Wars, the future of "Star Trek" will most certainly be modest, if not downright austere. Apologies to the people who eagerly wanted to see the proposed "Star Trek: Legacy," a hyped potential spinoff from "Picard." That series will likely never be made.

On the "Star Trek" recap chat show "The Ready Room," hosted by Wil Wheaton, Kurtzman was asked about the future of "Star Trek," and the exec was, perhaps predictably, diplomatic. He couldn't very well say that that franchise was on fire, or that Paramount was actively taking a step back from one of its most lucrative properties, but he did say that he would follow a strict rule for any new "Star Trek" shows: there needs to be something to say.

The glut of Star Trek

Kurtzman admitted that he was just following the whims of creativity (and of the entertainment marketplace) when he started overseeing more and more "Star Trek" from 2017 to 2021, saying:

"[T]he truth is that when we started 'Discovery,' I wasn't thinking about that. I was just thinking about making a great show. And I fell so deeply in love with 'Discovery' and with the process of making it. I spent a lot of time that first season really kind of meditating on this incredible universe that has been around for so long, and how much more can be done with it; how many amazing stories there are to tell. There's really an infinite number of stories to tell."

One might argue that Kutrzman's stories are hit-and-miss. "Discovery" has just as many detractors as fans, and many agree that "Picard" only had one good season among its three (and even then, complaints can be made about "the good one"). One cannot deny, however, that the stories have been plentiful. Between the six shows that Kurtzman has overseen, there have been 210 episodes, with a promised 20 more on the way. If that number of episodes were applied to 1990s "Star Trek,"  it would equal almost nine full seasons in only six-and-a-half years. Never before, not even in its '90s heyday, did "Star Trek" produce the same sheer volume.

When moving forward, however, Kurtzman said he wanted the franchise to be about quality and not quantity. He may claim to have infinite stories, but there aren't, he said, infinite themes to dissect. Each potentially new "Star Trek" series, he feels, needs to have a point.

Enough of quantity, Star Trek needs more quality

In Kurtzman's own words:

"I only want to make another 'Star Trek' show if there's something special to say. I don't want to do it just to do more. I think that would be a huge disservice to 'Star Trek.' It would be a huge disservice to the fans. I think the fans would feel it instantaneously. They would know this is not authentic because if there's one thing that 'Trek' fans know, it's authenticity. So for me, it's really just about figuring out a way to make sure that we take our time, we're deliberate, we're thoughtful, and we deliver on the promise of something different every time."

Some of the harsher "Discovery" critics might immediately chime in, pleading that Kurtzman should have taken on that attitude seven years ago. Sadly, Kurtzman does not elucidate on what the current spate of "Star Trek" shows has been saying; it would have been nice if he gave a thematic rundown on how each individual show is about something specific. "Discovery," for instance, is about emotional turmoil and how workmates cling to each other for warmth. "Picard" is about how one frets over their legacy. "Lower Decks" is about workplace camaraderie and the quarter-life crisis, "Prodigy" is about maturity, and "Strange New Worlds" is about whimsy in the face of terror.

Kurtzman also doesn't mention what "Section 31" or "Starfleet Academy" might say.

Perhaps, however, Kurtzman wishes any future "Star Trek" shows to break a trend. Perhaps he feels that "Star Trek" hasn't been communicating enough in terms of philosophy, themes, and ideas, choosing instead to fall back on the bland efficiencies of storytelling. If we're to get more "Star Trek," like he said, we should expect more.
