TG GOLD AWARD
Tested: May 2011
It seems like a long time since we did our last wedge test – in fact, it was about 16 months ago and as you’d expect a lot of new models have appeared on the market in that period. One of these is Ping’s new Tour-S model, which is a new and improved version of the Tour-W wedge that proved so massively popular.
And like their G15 driver improving on the previous G10, the new wedge might just be even better than the old model – something we didn’t think could happen. A very traditional headshape makes it a winner in the eayes of seasoned players as well as weekend golfers, and the Custom Tuning Port increases perimeter weighting for added forgiveness.
When it came to the lads’ assessment of the club, the quartet was full of praise for the Tour-S. Mike summed it up eloquently when he talked about the great feel and weight of the new club, and Chris suggested the new product took up where Ping’s previous excellent offering had left off. Chris was also incredibily accurate with the wedge, firing his shots to an average of just 3.5 yards from the pin.
In terms of feel and sound, the test team all scored the wedge highly, and it performed well from near the green and the 75-yard target. One final thing to consider – Chris generated more spin with this than any other wedge – if you want lots of control and a classy product in your bag, take a good look at this stunning piece of kit.
Results (out of 5):
Spin (56 degrees from 75 yards): 8,396 rpm Looks: 4.5 Feel: 4.8 Sound: 4.8 Around the green: 4.5 75 yards: 4.5 Overall r ating: 4.5
How much technology is it possible to pack into the compact head of a wedge? Lots, according to Ping. As well as featuring the usual technologies such as a machined face, maximum conforming grooves and a cleverly-designed sole for maximum versatility it also includes something called a Custom Tuning Port.
An insert in the rear of the head, it increases perimeter weighting for added forgiveness. But who would need forgiveness in a wedge? The fact Ping’s Tour players such as Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez all place their trust in the Tour-S indicates even the world’s best like a bit of help.

Ping tour-s wedge review: the perfect choice for golf tours [updated may 2024].
Are you an avid golfer who loves to explore different courses and play in tournaments? Then you understand that having the right equipment can make a significant difference in your game. When it comes to wedges, the Ping Tour-S wedge is an excellent choice for anyone who wants precision, consistency, and performance.
In this article, we’ll provide an in-depth Ping Tour-S wedge review to help you make an informed buying decision. We’ll discuss the features, benefits, and drawbacks of this wedge, along with real-world feedback from golfers who have used it. So, without further ado, let’s dive in.
What is the Ping Tour-S Wedge?
The Ping Tour-S wedge is a golf club designed to help golfers excel in short game situations. It’s specifically engineered to offer players more control and precision, allowing them to make precise shots from difficult lies. The wedge is available in several lofts, including 54, 56, 58, and 60 degrees, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.
Features of the Ping Tour-S Wedge
One of the standout features of the Ping Tour-S wedge is the precision-milled grooves that provide excellent spin and control. The wedge also has a tungsten toe weight that helps to increase the club’s moment of inertia, which provides better stability on off-center hits. Additionally, the wedge has a hydropearl chrome finish that reduces friction with grass and sand , which allows for more consistent shotmaking.
Benefits of the Ping Tour-S Wedge
The Ping Tour-S wedge offers several benefits that can help golfers improve their short game . For starters, the wedge provides excellent distance control, allowing you to make accurate shots from any distance. The precision-milled grooves also provide excellent spin and stopping power, which can help you get the ball closer to the pin. Additionally, the hydropearl chrome finish helps to reduce friction, which can lead to more consistent shots from the rough or sand.
Drawbacks of the Ping Tour-S Wedge
While the Ping Tour-S wedge is an excellent club , it does have a few potential drawbacks. One is that it’s relatively expensive compared to other wedges on the market. Additionally, some golfers may find that the tungsten toe weight makes the club feel slightly heavier than other wedges , which could affect their swing. Finally, the hydropearl chrome finish may wear off over time, which could affect the club’s performance.
Real-World Feedback from Golfers
To get a sense of how the Ping Tour-S wedge performs in practice, we scoured online reviews and forums to see what real golfers had to say. Overall, most golfers were impressed with the wedge’s performance, noting that it provided excellent control and spin. Some golfers also appreciated the club’s consistent feel and sound, which helped to build confidence on the course. However, some golfers did note that the club’s price was a bit steep, and some felt that it was too heavy for their liking.
After reviewing the Ping Tour-S wedge, we can confidently say that it’s an excellent choice for golfers who are serious about their short game . This club offers exceptional precision, spin, and distance control, making it a reliable tool to have in your bag. While it may be a bit pricey, its performance and durability make it worth the investment. So, if you’re looking for a reliable wedge for your golf tour, be sure to check out the Ping Tour-S wedge today!

A 58 DEGREE PING WEDGE IS AN EXCELLENT TOOL
The Tour-S is a well designed club. For me. the 58 degree wedge performs more accurately than a 60 degree. When I am looking at the distance to pin I left shots 8 - 15 feet short of the intended impact area almost every time it was used. Practice, with a 60, on the range has never allowed me to overcome fear of hitting a ball too long when within 40 yards of a green. This 58 degree wedge is perfect at compensating my visual picture of target to swing speed short comings.
Yes, I would buy them again. Awesome wedges.
I am a 16 handicap and these wedges are solid all the way around. Actually I have hit everything from junk irons to pro-line clubs and I have played to a 9 at best when I could play more and practice a bit. I hate practice so I avoid it at all costs. These wedges are awesome and at 67 I need all the help I can get. I just recently purchased a set of Ping Tour 57 irons with extra stiff shafts because my previous set of graphite Adams regular shafts were all over the place. I guess I still attack the ball kind of hard so the extra stiff stainless shafts are what I need even though I know my club head speed is much slower than when I was a kid. Maybe in about 10 years I will be ready for a more flexible shaft but you know what they say about teaching old dogs new tricks.
A great wedge for today's new groove standards
These are definetly a tour quality wedge, when you consider wedges utilizing the new standard grooves. They have a very nice feel to them, spin above-average, and set up very well for multiple shots. The KBS shafts are probably the best stock option they come with, and make them spin even better. I would say these are every bit as good as a Titleist, Cleveland or Mizuno wedge....each having their own pros and cons
Up, Up & Away
Lofts the ball as a 56 degree wedge should; has satisfactory feedback; another solid Ping product.

Review: Ping Tour-S Rustique Wedges
The new Tour-s Wedge have a new tuning port in the cavity which is very similar to the S56 irons. (see Review here). This tuning port Ping uses to create a cast club with excellent feel. They also redistribute the weight to the perimeter for some forgiveness in a wedge. The design, feel and over all play made me forget that these have conforming grooves.
I ordered a 52* 56* and 60* with KBS shafts to match the S56 irons. They all have similar grinds which are on the moderate side. I believe you can get more aggressive grind from the Ping WRX department. They all have a great shape, and aggressive, yet conforming grooves. I was also please with how they dug just a little but no huge divots.
The 52* gap wedge served me well. I was able to use it most on full shots, but from time to time to keep trajectory down on chips. While the grind isn’t overly aggressive, I still found it to be fairly versatile. I found this to be my 110 club every time I needed it.
The 56* is primarly my sand wedge. This club too didn’t have any fancy grind, but it just worked. It was able to escape the sand easily and typically with good spin. I had many sand saves with this wedge. I did use it too from the fairway at 100 yards. I had very good trajectory and distance control with this wedge.
The 60* does everything else. I use it on full shots at 90 yards and everything inside of that. I was really happy with this wedge even though the grind was similar to the other 2 wedges. I could still open it up and hit the flop. The leading edge was sharp enough to cut through the rough to extricate a ball, but didn’t dig too much on tight lies.
I was really impressed with the amount of spin that all three wedges offered. I have sets of both non-conforming and conforming grooves. While there is some difference I didn’t notice it much with these. They are sharp and spin the ball nicely. While I didn’t have many spin back, I wasn’t dealing with much roll out either. I just always felt in control of the spin.
Rust is a good thing on these Ping Tour-S wedges . They look great, offer a non-glare finish and spin the ball very nicely. For cast wedges they even felt pretty good.

The PING Tour-S Rustique is a top performer that looks particularly good in this finish. When the head rusts it provides plenty of spin on full and pitch shots. A head design that works brilliantly from sand.
Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .
Made from 8620 steel, which is softer than the Tour-S, the PING Tour-S Rustique model rusts over time to enhance traction with the ball and eliminate glare.
The finish looks great over time but is only available in three lofts.

- Lie angle is based on Black Color Code at standard length.
- The standard swing weights shown are with the PING Z-Z115 steel shaft.

s159 Shafts
PING offers a variety of shaft flexes in steel and graphite to meet your needs and preferences. Selecting the proper shaft flex for your swing will help you get the most distance and accuracy from every shot. Generally, players with faster swing speeds require stiffer shafts to keep the ball trajectory lower, while players with slower swing speeds will require more-flexible shafts to produce a higher ball trajectory.
The choice of steel or graphite shafts is usually based on preferences for weight and/or feel. Players seeking a lighter overall weight and/or a softer feel in their irons may prefer graphite shafts, while players who prefer a standard-weight club with a firmer feel may prefer steel shafts.
We recommend that you get fit for the shaft that allows you to play your best golf. Whether that’s a softer, lighter shaft with a higher launch or a heavier, stiffer shaft with a lower trajectory, a PING Certified Club Fitter can help you find the shaft that brings consistency to your game.
PING offers a variety of grip sizes and styles to fit different hand sizes and texture preferences. Since grip size influences your wrist action, and therefore the direction of your shots, it is commonly used by fitters to affect ball flight.
PING color-coded grips are available in six different diameters, and can be further customized with grip tape according to your needs. Once the neutral grip color code has been determined based on hand measurements, golfers may consider smaller diameter grips to help control fades and slices, or larger diameter grips to help control draws and hooks.
