Waste Management Phoenix Open

You just Monday qualified into a PGA Tour event—now what?

1069190966

Jeffrey Kang, shown in the 2018 Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, will be in this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open field as a Monday qualifier.

SCOTTSDALE — Monday qualifiers are having a moment. Much of that is due to the work of one man: Ryan French, known in the Twitterverse as Monday Q Info, who has shined a light on the colorful characters and rich storylines percolating below the glitz and glamor of the PGA Tour. Nothing like them exists in other sports. There is no pickup game for Lakers roster spot, no open batting practice to DH for the Yankees. So long as you have a few hundred bucks and a free Monday—and, in recent years, make it through the pre-qualifier, devised to weed out the delusional (or unfunny) 90-shooters—you are one great round away from teeing it up against Brooksy and Rahmbo.

MORE: Our Waste Management Phoenix Open picks

The dream scenario, of course, is parlaying a start into a PGA Tour career. The model for this is Corey Conners, who Monday’d into the 2019 Valero Texas Open and won the tournament to get into the following week’s Masters and end the purgatory of fringe Korn Ferry/PGA Tour status. Conners, boosted by that magical week in Texas, now sits No. 42 in the world and the Canadian has a great chance to make the International Presidents Cup team this fall.

More often than not, though, the Monday qualifier survivors—who almost always shoot something preposterously low to get into the field—enjoy a week in the sun before returning to the grind.

Jeffrey Kang, one of three men to get into the Waste Management Phoenix Open through Monday’s crapshoot, knows the grind as well as anyone. This will be the 30-year-old USC grad’s first start on the PGA Tour. He has played three times on the Korn Ferry Tour, but not since 2019. He’s had to wait longer than he’d ever expected for this opportunity—both on Monday, when he holed a 10-footer to end a 10-hole playoff for the final qualifying spot, and over the last decade-plus, when a gnarly case of the driver yips derailed a hugely promising prospect.

MORE: Morgan Hoffmann goes off the grid to find a cure

Kang was Golfweek’s top-ranked prospect when he signed at USC and started strong for the Trojans, picking up all-conference honors in each of his first two years and getting an honorable mention All-American nod as a sophomore. Then came the dreaded y-word, the result of a mechanical issue compounded by a crisis in confidence. Convinced that the driver struggles would be temporary, Kang turned pro shortly after graduation but has not been able to keep pace with the guys he beat as a teenager.

More on Monday Qualifiers

pga champions tour monday qualifier

“I’ve had times where I didn’t know if this is what I need to do,” Kang says, “if this is what I’m cut-out to do. But I had some really high moments in my junior career, so I knew I could compete and play at a certain level. And then when you’re not, it puts you in a weird spot. I definitely thought about stopping, but I couldn’t tell myself that I’d be okay with that. I thought it’d always linger, like I didn’t try everything.”

Holing that right-edge putt on Monday afternoon granted him the biggest opportunity of his still-young golf life. But first, he had to figure out where to park.

Yes, after the shock of making it through a Monday wears off, the distinctly un-sexy task of sorting logistics begins. After he sunk the clinching putt, a tour official approached him with forms he needed to electronically complete in order to register for the WMPO. Kang’s phone had run out of battery when he checked it.

“It just completely died,” he says. “I’ve never had that happen before just because of messages.”

Kang and his friend/caddie, Henry Chung, didn’t return to their hotel until 5 p.m. Monday—which was one hour after the late check-out time. The hotel had already extended their stay through Monday night, but virtually every hotel in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area is fully booked for this week, which year after year draws the biggest crowds of any PGA Tour event. It took them a solid hour of searching just to find a bed to sleep in. Next came extending the rental car and a well-earned slumber.

Kang and Chung pulled up to TPC Scottsdale at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, plenty of time to take care of a number of housekeeping items and to buy a tour-issued yardage book. Of course, they proceeded to get lost. Immediately.

“I circled this parking lot a good three times this morning. Just had no idea where to go. Going, scrambling, figuring out what I needed to do. One guy told me to go there to get a player’s badge, then I go there, and they told me to go somewhere else. I didn’t get to the range until 11 a.m.”

“Definitely interesting morning, but I can’t complain.”

The best part of that interesting morning was giving the tour his bank’s routing number, putting the pieces in place for a life-changing direct deposit come Sunday evening. Fingers crossed. After finally hitting some balls, he played a full practice round on his own, discussing start lines and club selections with Chung. They agreed on a bunted driver on 15 instead of a roasted 3-wood, a decision based purely on feeling. A few groups ahead, Matt NeSmith consulted with his paid statistician, who instructed him to practice a few lay-up shots from the right rough because going for it from there is a no-go. Kang doesn’t have that kind of luxury. At least not yet.

He will, however, get the tour-pro treatment in one key department: gear. A huge benefit of Monday’ing into an event is getting to raid the on-site equipment trucks. A player like Kang gets a free set of clubs perhaps once a year, but that’s about it. On the Big Tour, however? It’s a gearhead’s dream. Head into the truck, tell them what you want and they’ll make it happen. Kang had already gotten new grips on his sticks and planned to pick up some fresh wedges for the week.

“It’s just way more compact out here—fairways are firmer, greens are a lot firmer,” he says. “I’m used to shooting darts. Soft greens, soft fairways, shorter courses.”

Any PGA Tour event was going to feel a helluva lot bigger than the Forme Tour events Kang has been playing. The WMPO, however, is the biggest of the big. Kang respectfully paused our interview to drink in the walk from the 15th green to the iconic 16th tee. It was close to 4:30 p.m. and this was Tuesday, hardly the frenetic atmosphere that’ll greet contenders come the weekend. Still, 20-odd well-served patrons dared him to hit it as close as possible and aggressively boo’d when he fanned a 9-iron out right. A fan promised Chung a free beer if he could hit it inside his boss but he, too, missed the green. Boo’s all around. Chung wasn’t bothered. “I can’t wait for Sunday!,” he yelled. Kang, too, was all smiles as he walked up to the green. This is what he’s been waiting for.

Monday Qualifier: The Path to a PGA Tourney

Imagine teeing it up for a PGA Tour event… even if you’re an amateur golfer. It’s 100% possible if you have a few great rounds in your game.

To get to the biggest stage of golf, you must go through the gauntlet known as Monday qualifiers. These are some of the most competitive events in the world and can truly change someone’s life.

Keep reading to learn more about qualifying for a professional golf tournament to see if you have what it takes.

Monday Qualifiers – The Step-by-Step Process

First off, you might be thinking,  “What are PGA Monday qualifiers?”

It’s a good question. I’m sure you’ve heard announcers on TV say something like,  “He shot 65 on Monday to qualify for this event.”  Or,  “He didn’t have any status so he had to Monday qualify just to get here.”

A Monday qualifier is the process to get into a professional golf tournament. It’s a little different process for each tour but we’ll outline them all in this article. Let’s start with the PGA Tour where the world’s best golfers compete for huge purses.

To qualify for a PGA Tour event, here is a quick overview of the process:

  • Find your event → Register for pre-qualifying site → Pre-Qualifying Event (18 Holes) → Top scores get into Monday Qualifier (18 Holes) → Top players advance to the tournament.

In the old days, you could just sign up for a Monday site and give it your best shot. But as there is so much interest in it these days, you first have to go through pre-quaifying, just to make it to the Monday qualifier.

I’ve competed several times to try and get to a Monday qualifier and haven’t had any luck (yet). It’s more competitive than you could imagine as you get some of the best players in the world all hoping for a shot.

You’ll get a little bit of everything in these qualifiers; amatuers like myself, mini tour professionals, teaching pros, ex-PGA players, Korn Ferry pros, and professional golfers who don’t have status anymore.

Can anyone play in a Monday qualifier?

Yes, as long as you’re willing to spend some money! In fact, a guy lost his fantasy football pool and had to play in a Monday qualifier… he ended up shooting 111 and likely has a lifetime of shame too.

But before getting into the field and typical scores, let’s dive into the first step – finding your event.

Step 1: Find Your Tournament

First things first, sadly, you can’t qualify for any PGA Tour event on the schedule. I know every golfer on the planet wants to tee it up at Augusta National in April for the Masters, but it doesn’t work like that.

Monday qualifiers only exist for a certain number of tournaments each year. These are known as “Open” events; such as the Valero Texas Open, Waste Management (WM) Open, or the Farmers Insurance Open. There are no qualifiers for events like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am or the BMW Championship.

I live in Scottsdale, Arizona so each year I try for the WM Open in January. It’s usually best to find a site that is local as almost all qualifiers are near the tournament site.

Step 2: Register for Pre-Qualifying

Once you find your event, it’s time to get your credit card out and pay for the big day. You might be thinking, “How much does it cost to play in a Monday qualifier?”

It’s not cheap. In 2022 it was $250 for my qualifier and the golf course was not a $250 course to say the least. Luckily, yu get to choose the site as there is usually more than one since so many players want a chance to compete.

For example, since the WM is such a popular event (and evyerone wants a chance to play in it), there are eight qualifying sites! In the 2022 WM Open, there were 78 players in each field so 624 players trying to get to the next qualifying event. Pre-qualifying is the week before the actual event and are between Monday-Saturday.

You can only pick one site so make sure it’s a golf course that you love. I always choose the same course as I’m familiar with how they set it up for the event and feel it suits my game.

Monday Qualifier

Step 3: Pre-Qualifying

Once you find your pre-qualifying site, it’s a good idea to play a practice round at the venue. That way you can evaluate the course conditions and get fully prepared for the big event. I typically do my practice round the day before so the course conditions are nearly identical to the qualifier.

Then, it’s time for the bid day. Go out and play 18 holes with one intention – make it to Monday. It’s hard to not play overly aggressive as you know a good score (and nearly perfect golf) is needed to advance.

The course is set up very difficult in most cases, especially if it’s a flat, easy golf course. In my 2022 pre-qualifer we had tough pins and bone-chilling wind which made for a long day.

A pro in my group quit on hole 17 because he couldn’t stand it anymore (and didn’t want to see his total score). Six of 78 players had a WD (withdraw) next to their name that day so he wasn’t alone.

My round didn’t go as planned after making a double bogey on the first hole. But I stuck with it and hit a perfect shot two holes later and holed out from 143 yards! Sadly, it wasn’t a good omen as I didn’t make it to the Monday so my journey was over. But don’t worry, I can still take you through the rest.

Scores tend to be crazy low in these pre-qualifying events. The weather made my site difficult and 69 (-3) advanced. But other qualifying sites had 62 or 63 to advance to Monday… that’s crazy good golf.

Step 4: Pay For Monday Qualifying and Practice Round

If you’re lucky enough to advance to Monday, it’s time to register for part of the event. That’s right, the Monday isn’t included in the original $250.

Prices vary for the pre-qualifer depending on your status when registering for the Monday qualifer. For example, amatuer entry fees are lower than professionals and range from $100 to $500 for the day.

Sadly, the Monday qualifier isn’t at the actual venue and instead a course nearby.

Step 5: Make it Through Monday Qualifier

The Monday of the event is where the magic happens. This is where all the players who made it through pre-qualifying advance to the Monday.

The field is also comprised of big names, amateurs, mini-tour pros, and more. You literally never know who you could get paired up with.

For example, in the 2022 WM Open Monday qualifier some name you might recongize were Aaron Baddeley, Scott Harringont, and more. Once again, scores are low to get to the PGA Tour event. Almost always there’s a tie and golfesr play until it’s down to the number of qualifiers allowed into the event. Talk about high stake golf, each shot is very intense!

Then, if you make it in the event you have Tuesday and Wednesday to complete practice rounds and get ready for Thursday. Talk about a whirlwind week of golf!

If you want to follow the action through the season, make sure to follow Monday Q Info on Instagram. They provide tons of updates so you can monitor activity of certain players and root your favorite people on from the distance.

Monday Qualifying for Other Tours

The process of playing in a PGA tour event is intense and much more difficult than other tours. Here is additional information of the process.

Korn Ferry Tour

The KFT has a similar process but skips the pre-qualifying the week prior and goes straight to the Monday qualifier. There are usually multiple sites with each one having several spots for the event. But they do fill up quickly so make sure you register in advance as spots tend to fill up quickly.

When I was writing this article I played with two guys who regularly travel and compete in Monday qualifiers for the KFT. They said the competition is unreal and that scores are usually -9 to -12 even to advance into the tournament! As one of them said, “One bad break and you have no chance of advancing.”

Yikes! Plus, they said the courses are rarely the nicest or most well maintained either. Less than perfect golf courses paired with high travel costs and insanely low scores make for a difficult challenge.

Other tours that skip the pre-qualifying include the PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latin America.

LPGA Tour

According to the LPGA Tour  website , there is a local qualifier (no pre-qualifying) too. They allow local qualifying for more than 15 events and two qualifiers advance into the tournament. Entry fees are about the same price ($200 to $250).

Qualifying for US Open

While you can’t try to qualify for every tournament on the PGA Tour, there is one major that allows the everyday golfer to compete – the US Open. Like a normal tour stop, this is a challenging process where the odds are against you but there’s nothing like the challenge. I’ve tried four of five years (they didn’t have anything in 2020 thanks to the pandemic).

The process starts with a local qualifying 18 holes at a site you choose. These sites tend to be great golf courses in difficult conditions. The course I try out on is normally 7,300 yards with tucked pins, firm and fast greens. Needless to say, the conditions aren’t easy.

If you’re one of the players to advance (they usually take 3-5 spots, plus ties) and 1-2 two alternates, then you advance to sectionals. The sectionals take place in June and is a marathon day of golf – 36 holes (while walking). Each sectional site has a few spots in which players will earn a spot in one of the most prestigious events of the year.

Final Thoughts

While it’s not easy (by any means) to qualify for a PGA Tour event, it is possible thanks to local Monday qualifiers. 36 holes is all that separates you from playing in a professional even on the biggest stage. And only 18 holes for Korn Ferry or other PGA events.

But excellent golf is required and a little bit of luck. If you do wish to enter, make sure improve your game as much as possible so you’re ready for the challenge.

Remember, as long as you can advance through the pre-qualifier, you can get into the Monday. Then, you never know what might happen. All it takes is an epic round to play in a PGA Tour event, whether you’re an amateur or professional golfer. Just remember, if you try out as an amateur, you won’t make any money if you do make the cut (but will make plenty of memories).

The Korn Ferry Tour is slightly different and easier but still requires some great golf. But if you like to test your game (or don’t’ have any status on a professional tour), this is the process to get to the big stage.

Charles Porter, Kyle Reifers, Grant Booth, Eddy Lai earn spots

Charles Porter hasn’t had the easiest road into professional golf.

Growing up in government housing with six older siblings, Porter fell in love with the game – to which he was first introduced by his father – via the First Tee-San Francisco and the Youth on Course program. He didn’t play many tournaments but maximized his opportunities, including victories at the 2020 San Francisco City Championship and Contra Costa Amateur, and he earned conditional Korn Ferry Tour status this season via Q-School.

“I strongly believe I am the living embodiment of the Youth on Course mission statement — to provide youth access to life-changing opportunities through golf,” Porter told Northern California magazine Aces Golf earlier this year.

Porter earned another opportunity this week, carding 9-under 63 to Monday qualify into the Barracuda Championship. The San Francisco native, 24, earned one of four available spots in this week’s field at Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood).

Also earning Barracuda tee times via Monday’s qualifier were Kyle Reifers (64), Grant Booth (65) and Eddy Lai (65).

It’s the continuation of a remarkable Monday qualifying run for Reifers, who has made the cut twice as a Monday qualifier in the past month, finishing T38 at the Travelers Championship and T52 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Reifers finished runner-up at the 2015 Barracuda Championship, falling to J.J. Henry in a playoff, and will relish the chance to return to the TOUR’s lone Modified Stableford event.

In all, 56 players competed for four spots in this week’s field. The Barracuda Championship, a co-sanctioned event between the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, occurs in the third-to-last week of the FedExCup Regular Season.

Here’s a capsule look at the four qualifiers for this week’s Barracuda Championship:

Talor Gooch gets invitation to PGA Championship after LIV success

The PGA of America appeared to detour from its usual practice by inviting a low-ranked player whose recent success has come solely on the Saudi-backed circuit.

pga champions tour monday qualifier

In an apparent nod to his work on the LIV Golf circuit, Talor Gooch received an invitation to this month’s PGA Championship.

The 32-year-old Oklahoma native, whose Official World Golf Ranking placement was in the 30s when he defected from the PGA Tour in May 2022, has plunged to 644th while with LIV, whose events have yet to be approved for OWGR points. The PGA of America traditionally fills out its PGA Championship field with players ranked in the top 100.

While his ranking plummeted last year, Gooch won three LIV events, finished in the top 12 in six others and garnered an $18 million bonus for winning its individual points race. He thanked the PGA of America for its invitation Monday on social media.

“Looking forward to Valhalla next week!” Gooch wrote , referring to the storied course in Louisville set to host the tournament for a fourth time. “See y’all there.”

Gooch’s 2022 results on the PGA Tour earned him spots last year in the fields of three majors: the Masters, the British Open and the PGA Championship. After the U.S. Golf Association tweaked its qualifying criteria for the U.S. Open in February 2023, Gooch referred to himself in saying it was “obviously disappointing because that changed rule only affected one person,” then fell short of making the U.S. Open field that year when his OWGR mark dropped below the top 60.

While several LIV players have been eligible to play in majors this year because of past success in those events, Gooch — whose best finish in a major was a tie for 14th at the 2022 Masters — has had to rely on his world ranking. That well ran dry in 2023, and Gooch was facing the prospect of not appearing in any major this year until, per his post, the PGA of America took a detour from its usual practice.

The organization is expected to reveal its full field Tuesday, according to the Associated Press . Another LIV golfer, Joaquin Niemann, said in March that he had received a special invitation to the PGA Championship.

Assuming that’s the case, it will be the second straight major in which Niemann participates via invitation, after Masters officials included him in their field last month. Niemann, who was ranked in the teens when he left the PGA Tour, had taken strides to keep his world ranking (currently 91st) from falling off a cliff. In addition to playing LIV events, the 25-year-old Chilean competed in several tournaments on the Asian and European tours, where his four top-five finishes included a win at the Australian Open in December.

LIV Golf’s David Puig, who joined the circuit in 2022 after starring at Arizona State, has taken a similar approach. By bolstering his résumé with several top-10 finishes on the Asian Tour over the past year, the young Spaniard has climbed the OWGR to a perch just outside the top 100, and he reportedly also received a PGA Championship invitation.

Since joining LIV, Gooch has played just two events that weren’t on that circuit or were a major, and he didn’t have a good result in either. He answered a question last week about potentially playing in qualifying events for the U.S. Open and British Open by bluntly indicating he had no intention of doing so.

Gooch sparked derision in golf circles earlier this year when he was quoted as saying of the 2024 Masters — to which he was not invited — “If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his [career] Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.” The Masters field ended up including 13 other LIV players, raising questions about whether Gooch’s criterion for “the best players in the world” was a field with him in it.

As such, Gooch could find himself feeling an extra dose of pressure to perform well at the PGA Championship, which tees off next week. A one-time winner on the PGA Tour, he is coming off a fourth-place finish at a LIV event in Singapore.

Here is the look at the four players who Monday qualified for the Wells Fargo Championship. Weather caused problems at the qualifier, including a tornado warning. It concluded with a 2-for-1 playoff in near-dark. Patrick Cover made a par on the first playoff hole to defeat Danny Guise.

PGATOUR.COM talked with Keenan Huskey after he qualified for the Wells Fargo Championship. We talked with him about what the wait to get into your first PGA TOUR event is like.

PGATOUR.COM: You were the third group out today, when you turned in your card did you think it was going to be good enough?

Huskey: When I got done, I thought it was going to be close, but because of the variable today I just wasn’t sure. There were delays and the rain, so its so hard to tell what will make it and what won’t. The course changed throughout the day because of that. I knew it was a good score, but because of what I talked about with the weather, I really had no clue if it was good enough.

PGATOUR.COM: After you turn in your scorecard what did you do for the rest of the day, do you try to keep yourself busy or are you watching scoreboard intently?

Huskey: Man, I was really trying to stay away from it today, but it didn’t work to well. The problem was I couldn’t really leave the golf course, with the weather delays I wasn’t sure if the playoff was going to be today or if they weren’t going to finish until tomorrow. I was honestly waiting for another rain delay, if that happened, I was just going to head home and come back in the morning and wait. I ended up just sitting in my car and looking every once in a while. I would look through my phone for someone to call, I was watching YouTube clips, that kind of thing. I was just trying to pass the time. When the last few groups came in, I was kind of resigned to the fact I didn’t have any control over it. But it held up and here I am.

PGATOUR.COM: Who was the first phone call you made when you were officially in?

Huskey: It was my parents. It was an awesome phone call. My parents have been so important to my career, from juniors on. Obviously, this is something we all sacrificed for to get to this point. Its really cool to see all the work I have done and the countless hours I have spent with my dad and mom. On the other hand, this is just the first step in what I hope is a long career.

PGATOUR.COM: You had a really successful college career, but haven’t gotten to the Korn Ferry or PGA TOUR yet, is learning to be patient with getting there part of the process?

Huskey: Yeah, for sure. It was a huge step from junior golf to college golf, and then another huge step from college golf to the pro game. You really have to adapt your game at each step. Over the last six months or so I think I have become more consistent, and you really need that out here. You have to play well three or four days straight. It’s been a learning process for sure, but we’re figuring it out.
