South Dakota’s George S. Mickelson Trail is more than just a recreation Trail: it is a trail of history. You have the opportunity to travel the same path as General George A. Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Potato Creek Johnny. Burlington Northern built this rail line over 130 years ago to accommodate the miners who had rushed to the area to pan for gold. In 1983, the rail line was removed from service and this incredible trail was envisioned. After years of planning, hard work, and determination the trail became a reality.  JUN 21 - JUN 23 MICKELSON TRAIL SUMMER TREKbegins in Custer The Trail Trek is a 3-day, 109-mile supported bicycle ride through the heart of the Black Hills on the George S. Mickelson Trail. This ride is a wonderful way to see the beauty of the Black Hills that can't be seen from the road. The ride will take you through four hard rock tunnels, over more than 100 tressle bridges, through several beautiful areas and will leave you with many wonderful memories. Be Sure to Remember your Helmet! They are MANDATORY!

The Mickelson Trail Summer Trek is held annually in June, in the the Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

South Dakota’s George S. Mickelson Trail is more than just a recreation Trail: it is a trail of history. You have the opportunity to travel the same path as General George A. Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Potato Creek Johnny. Burlington Northern built this rail line over 130 years ago to accommodate the miners who had rushed to the area to pan for gold. In 1983, the rail line was removed from service and this incredible trail was envisioned. After years of planning, hard work, and determination the trail became a reality. In celebration of the achievement of many forward‐thinking individuals and the incredible popularity of the Mickelson Trail Trek, we are introducing the Mickelson Summer Trek. This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 3‐day ride covers almost the entire trail. Registration fee includes‐ shuttle service, 6 snacks, 3 meals and $10 each in Custer Cash and Deadwood Gold Bucks. Riders can enjoy the beauty of the heart of the Black Hills as they travel through the scenic valleys, old railroad tunnels and historic mining towns.

Be Sure to Remember your Helmet! They are MANDATORY!

Summer Trek Information Registration :

  • Registration before March 31 with merchandise‐ $200
  • Registration after March 31 without merchandise‐ $250

Registration closes on June 2. Unless ride fills early Pre‐Registration is Required!

The registration fee for the 3‐day ride entitles riders to full amenities during the Summer Trek, including an annual trail pass, shuttle service, merchandise, refreshments, 3 meals and 6 snacks. Registration packets and additional ride information will be distributed either Thursday night at Early Bird Check‐In or Friday morning at the Custer Chamber of Commerce.

Mickelson Trail Summer Trek - Custer

South Dakota's George S. Mickelson Trail is more than just a recreation Trail; it's a trail of history. You have the opportunity to travel the same path as General George A. Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Potato Creek Johnny! In September, hundreds of riders join together to ride this historic trail in the Mickelson Trail Trek. 

Riders can enjoy the beauty of the heart of the Black Hills as they travel through scenic valleys, old railroad tunnels and historic mining towns. This year's Trek promises to be bigger and better than ever, offering something for everyone. 

Layered clothing is strongly suggested in order to accommodate the weather. Major swings in temperatures can take place in a few minutes. Helmets are mandatory.

Lodging will be the riders' responsibility. The ride starts in Custer on Friday and Saturday and in Deadwood on Sunday, so plan your lodging accordingly.

Early check-in is on Thursday. The trek will take riders from Custer to Edgemont, Rochford and Deadwood.

This 109 mile ride takes place on America’s most scenic rails to trails conversion: The George S. Mickelson Trail. Enjoy a challenging day of historic exploration and unparalleled natural beauty as you embark on a cycling adventure like no other. Pedaling through the heart of the Black Hills, participants will be captivated by our region’s rich history and picturesque landscapes. The trail passes through historic mining towns, over more than 100 bridges, and through three tunnels. As the miles unfold, cyclists will be challenged by varying elevations and terrains, creating a sense of accomplishment with every hill conquered. The route culminates in the charming town of Edgemont, marking the completion of a monumental 109-mile journey - in one day!. The Big Mick Century Ride isn’t just a cycling event; it’s an exploration of the spirit and resilience that defines both cyclists and the historic landscape

they traverse. With its combination of natural beauty, historical significance,

and the thrill of the open road, this epic one-day event stands as a testament
