Madagascar’s human inhabitants, the Malagasy people, are a gentle and easy going people who still live by the land as their ancestors did, thousands of years ago. Let the Malagasy people warmly welcome you to their island home.
We'll never forget zebu brochettes at the mid-point of our hike in Isalo national park, with lemurs cavorting through the trees!

Madagascar: a unique country and a dream destination for nature and outdoor lovers!
Its a land of diverse natural beauty and which wildlife enthusiasts consider to be one of the world’s most special places.
Encounters with wildlife are often very close and intimate. Lemurs stare back with big round eyes, chameleons may climb up your arm to the top of your head, and unique birds are a plenty. Over 580 km from the Malagasy highlands to the coast, we experience a mix of on and off road cycling. There’ll be chances to meet the friendly and welcoming locals to learn about their culture and customs, and as we travel through a variety of landscapes the flora and fauna will change. Madagascar is a magical place, and offers a memorable travel experience unlike any other.

Reviews for Madagascar Biking Tour - Tour
It was excellent! Our tour leader was helpful on every front, plus we had 5 others as part of the support team. They all worked really well together, were lovely and made things seamless for us. We ate really well, the lunches they prepared for us on the road were great, I might even say they were the best I had on a cycling tour. The restaurants they picked for the restaurant meals were good choices to give us some variety. The routes were generally good, giving us a nice variety of landscapes and towns. To my surprise (I’m not much into hiking) I enjoyed the hikes and parks on the non-cycling days, particularly the latter 2. I wanted lemurs and I got many as well as cool other creatures in those parks as well as in our stay at Camp Catta (great location). Our group got along really well & friendships were made. Anyway, it was a great trip, I am really happy with the experience. So a big thank you for everything! Linda S. October 18, 2023
The whole tour was fantastic. Loved the food/culture/people and of course the bike riding. The support from staff during the tour was beyond the call of duty and the local guides were wonderful. Greg Griffith September 1, 2017
The group was very good, good atmosphere and help from all participants. Jef Raus September 20, 2015
When the itinerary refers to a "challenging" day; it is. My quote is simply "some days were challenging"! Robin September 20, 2015
Our special experience was the close encounter with the Lemurs at small nature reserve of Anja exceeded expectations. Mora Mora. Alistair and Ann - Madagascar September 20, 2015

Full Itinerary
Arrival day: antananarivo.
Welcome to Antananarivo, the capital and largest city in Madagascar. It is colourful, chaotic, cluttered, gritty, poor. You can arrive any time today and will be met at the airport by your tour leader and then transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure. Antananarivo (often called Tana) takes its name from an episode in Malagasy history and means 'one thousand warriors'.
Meals: None
Antananarivo to Antsirabe
We transfer to Antsirabe, the second largest city in Madagascar and best known for its thermal springs. Its also known for its French Colonial buildings and its many colourful pousse-pousse (or rickshaw). Our transfer takes us along a gravel road into the fertile highlands, past rice terraces, orchards and vegetable plots. This afternoon after our bike fitting there will be a short ride to get ourselves used to the bikes and the traffic.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Antsirabe (round trip)
Madagascar's two most known crater lakes, Andraikiba and Tritriva should not be missed. Lake Andraikiba is both beautiful and unique. We follow the 5km path around the edge before continuing to Lake Tritriva, a beautiful lake of volcanic origin. Even before reaching it, we can see the Mount Tritriva emerging from the village of Belazao. A sad legend surrounds this lake; it is believed that two lovers, whose marriage was forbidden drowned themselves in the lake to be together forever. They were reincarnated into two closely growing trees by the lake. Over the years the branches of the trees became intertwined to eventually become one tree.
Antsirabe to Ambositra
We start early today, cycling further south on a hilly road to Ambositra. We ride past many rice terraces which are harvested up to three times a year. We'll be treated to great landscapes, views and rural Malagasy life. Ambositra is a lively arts and crafts village surrounded by misty green peaks and an ideal place to pick up souvenirs of your stay! Tonight we'll stay in a nice hotel on the edge of town.
Ambositra to Ranomafana
After a short visit to some wood carvers we transfer to Lalatsara Camp. From here we ride along rural roads through a beautiful valley below towering granite boulders to Ambohimahasoa. Then after 2 climbs we ride through villages and forest before reaching the rain forest of Ranomafana National Park - part of the lush chain of rainforest that runs down Madagascar's east coast. The park's star attraction is the golden bamboo lemur, often found grazing amongst the bamboo thickets. The park spans over 415 km of mountainous terrain. After a final descent we reach tonight's lodge.
Today we explore the Ranomafana National Park on foot. The park is 'tropically damp' and a great place to discover the endemic animals and plant world more closely. We may hear the calls of the cuckoo rollers, catch a glimpse of a leaf-tailed gecko, rare birds, lemurs or stumble across the graves of the Tanala, 'the people of the forest'. The park is also flora rich with orchids, tree ferns, palms, mosses, trumpet flowers and strands of giant bamboo. We return by support vehicle to our hotel.
Ranomafana to Sahambavy
After breakfast we drive up to the village of Vohiparara and begin cycling on a gravel road. We see locals selling piles of sand from the nearby river as well as women weaving baskets. We overnight in a hotel in the centre of the tea growing area. If time permits we visit the Sahambavy Tea Estate, the only tea plantation in Madagascar. We stay in charming bungalows overlooking a lake in the tea growing area.
Sahambavy to Ambalavao
We cycle to Fianarantsoa, the former spiritual centre of the country. Then its mostly downhill to Ambalavao - its a very scenic ride with views into the valleys. Alternatively we can cycle to Ambalavao straight from the Sahambavy hotel on a mostly undulating dirt road (51 km). The car cannot follow here as we cross several small valleys with rice and cassava plantations and some eucalyptus forests. Its an adventure and tourists hardly ever come here so the children will be curious about us. In Ambalavao we see traditional Antaimoro papermaking.
Ambalavao to Anja Villagers Park to Tsaranoro
In Ambalavao we visit the workshop to see how traditional Antaimoro papermaking is done. Then we head further south where bizarre landscapes of towering cliffs await us in the small nature reserve of Anja. This unique environmental and cultural preservation site is an example of how humans and nature can co-exist and flourish. We'll see superb scenery, plants, caves, tombs and ring-tailed lemurs. We can take a short walk into the park before heading into the Tsaranoro Valley which leads to the Andringitra Mountains. We overnight in a rustic camp, our home for two nights.
Andringitra massif (hike)
Today we hike in the Andringitra massif with an ascent of the ‘chameleon’ mountain - named because of the recognisable shape of a chameleon in the rock. After passing many villages, rice fields and hills we reach a forest with gnarled trees where we may see lemurs. The mountain has steep cliffs of volcanic origin and consists of highly fissured granite. Andringitra extends over a length of 100 km. We'll be rewarded with spectacular views over this ancient landscape.
Tsaranoro to Ranohira
Today we ride back to meet National Road 7 where we continue by vehicle to Ankaramena. This place is well known for its delicious mango and papaya. We drive to Ihosy and continue on to the plateau of Horombe where we have lunch. Then we ride the last 75 km to our lodge on the edge of the Isalo National Park in the small village of Ranohira.
Hiking in Isalo NP
This park is fiercely beautiful with golden plains punctuated by craggy pinnacles of terracotta rock, valleys, canyons and waterfalls. The Isalo National Park comprises the entire stretch of the Isalo massif. This huge mountain is spectacular with its eroded sandstone mountain. Our adventure begins with a trek in the Park through landscapes formed by centuries of erosion and fascinating sandstone formations. We walk to the canyons, look for ring-tailed and other lemurs, and refresh ourselves at a waterfall or a natural pool.
Ranohira to Ambolimailaka to Ifaty
Today is the last part of our cycling adventure. We begin with a bus ride south to Toliara. This is the most important trade centre in south Madagascar. On the way we see Baobab and stop at the tombs of the ethnic groups of the Mahafaly and Antandroy. After lunch we cycle to Ifaty, Madiorano and Ambohimailaka, small fishing villages, where we enjoy a swim in the warm Indian Ocean. This evening we enjoy our last celebration dinner together. After dinner your tour manager says ‘Good bye’.
Time to relax at the end of your tour in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Discover colourful plants and fish while snorkelling around the coral reef. If you'd like to explore more unique plant life take a walk to a nearby Nature Reserve known for its variety of Didierraceae, Adansonia, Euphorbia and Baobab trees.
Meals: Breakfast
Another day to relax and unwind.
Departure Day
Time to say goodbye. We farewell the forests of Ifaty and transfer you to Toliara Airport where the tour finishes.

Separated from the Southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar’s isolation only adds to its appeal as a tour destination. Its seclusion is the reason for the rare plants and animals who live here, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.
Keep an eye peeled for the famed ring-tailed lemur as we explore the lush tropical rainforest on the Eastern side of the isle. And look out for other curious creatures along your trip: tomato frogs, dwarf chameleons, and hedgehog-like tenrecs – all unique to the country and so prolific that sightings are sure to happen.
The wilds of Madagascar offer an exciting combination of terrain for the adventurous cyclist & hiker to tackle. From the mix of tarmac & hard-packed dirt roads, the uphill climbs (notably, to the glassy Lake Tritriva atop the mountain of the same name), to the vast downhill trail across the Horombe Plateau. Madagascar is an island of unparalleled landscapes, & this adventure treks it all.
Ascend the ancient stone steps of Antananarivo, the country’s capital. Mingle with the friendly Malagasy people to experience their culture and how they live off the land. Refresh your hard-working muscles in the natural pools & waterfalls we pause at to rest. And ride the wide-open savannah, punctuated by otherworldly rock formations.

Bike and Hike Wild Madagascar trip was absolutely fantastic, it was a perfect combination of cycling and 3 days hiking. The lead guide Mr. SN and second guide Mr LR as well as the bike mechanic 3rd ride support RM were so accommodating, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful every pedal stroke and step along the way. The vehicle transport drives very safe – excellent drivers, so courteous – very much appreciated. One of the major surprises was how good all the food options were at 3 meals plus snack breaks while cycling, the use of local food very much appreciated. The homemade lunches prepared by our own bike tour staff were a highlight to look forward to each day. Excellent job on every level. Congratulations “Happy Guy On A Bike.”

Madanature Bike Tours
Welcome to madanature bike tours.
Madagascar is a unique place and certainly an experience that should be on every adventurous traveller's list of things to do. It is a land of extremely diverse natural beauty, ranging from verdant rainforests to craggy sandstone and beautiful sandy beaches. Then there's the wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts have always counted this as one of the world's special places. The amazing thing is that encounters with wildlife are often very close ones: lemurs big and small don‘t seem to run away, but just stare back at you with their big round eyes. Chameleons are also quite happy to climb up your arm and more, if you let them. And do not forget the birds. That make Madagascar a unique experience for wildlife.
There is also the novelty of travelling in a country that sees very few tourists. Putting up with power outages and poor roads is tempered by the fact that travellers get to absorb a slow and relaxed pace of life where no one ever seems to do anything in a hurry. The Malagasy have a commonly–used word for this – ‘mora mora’, which means ‘slowly, slowly‘. You will soon discover that Madagascar is indeed a magical place and a memorable travel experience unlike any other. Madagascar is most definitely a destination for adventurous travellers and nature lovers.

The majority of this trip takes place off road so you’ll need to be physically fit and confident riding on rough terrain. You’ll also undertake some hiking through rugged terrain including a hike to Chameleon Peak where you can appreciate panoramic views over this rocky highland with a breathtaking landscape of prairies and alpine patches.
With a variety of flora and fauna endemic only to its territory, this fourth largest island in the world has been recognised as a biodiversity hotspot by Conservation International. Apart from its natural , the island nation is also rich in culture with ethnic groups who have settled and made up the nation for more than two millennia.
This bike and hike tour takes you to appreciate the friendly Malagasy people along with their proud traditions before it’s time to venture away from civilization into the wilderness and marvel at the country’s biodiversity that can’t be matched by any on the planet. Who is this trip for?
The majority of this trip takes place off road and therefore it is recommended that participants be physically fit and confident riding on rough terrain. In addition, as this cycling adventure is complimented by two days of hiking through rugged terrain, a moderate level of physical fitness will be an asset.
The off-road portions of this trip are complimented by flat, tarmac and hard-packed roads. While the trails are generally smooth, some sections have loose gravel and sandy patches that could prove hazardous to riders. Additionally, as some of the descents can be rocky, extra caution is recommended.

For the full factsheets, please make an enquiry and they’ll be sent to you right away to help you decide if this is the perfect trip for you.
When's the best time to travel to Madagascar?
Dominated by the southern trade winds from the Indian Ocean Madagascar has two seasons, a warm, wet season (November – April); and a dry, cool season (May – October). However, due to its geographic setting this island country has a variety of climatic patterns – tropical in the north, temperate in the central, and arid in the south. Although the western and southwestern parts are hot in the summer, the weather is warm, with blue skies and a lot of sunshine during the winter months. Also note that in the central highlands the weather can get fairly chilly in the day and cold at night, so warm clothing is highly recommended.
Is fresh water supplied?
Keeping you completely hydrated is taken very seriously. Cold water, some energy-restoring local fruit and soft drinks are included in the tour price.
Is money easily accessible in Madagascar?
Madagascar’s currency is the Malagasy ariary (AR) and is used throughout the country. Euros are also widely accepted, with US dollars occasionally accepted in the capital, major cities and tourist attractions. However, while ATMs are available in Antananarivo and other major towns, you are allowed to draw only around €150 per transaction.
In addition, as credit cards are not widely accepted except at a few luxury hotels, upscale restaurants, Air Madagascar offices and travel agencies, it is recommended you have enough cash on hand. The most useful card is Visa, with MasterCard welcomed only in some stores. Visa and MasterCard can also be used to get cash advances (in ariary) at the banks which also change travellers cheques and cash in major currencies. Ivato Airport also has a foreign-exchange counter offering exchange rates as good as those at the banks, and is quite convenient for tourists upon their arrival to the country, but be sure to count your money immediately so that you haven’t been short changed as there have been a number of reports of fraud committed by its staff.
It is recommeded that you tuck away a few extra dollars, perhaps US$20, for incidentals. It is customary to tip local tour guides and drivers, however, the amount you give should be dependent on the level of service you receive.
Can I travel as a solo traveller?
Absolutely. There is no compulsory surcharge for travelling alone. Accommodation is arranged on a twin share basis with another group traveller of the same gender. If you cannot be matched, a single room will be provided at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.
Are spare bike parts available?
Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though it cannot be guaranteed there’ll be spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.
Do I need to bring a helmet?
Wearing a helmet is required and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.
What are the local hire bikes like?
Because some people can’t imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, they are not automatically provide as part of this tour. However, you are able to hire bikes locally for the price listed above. The bikes are Carraro mountain bikes with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes and Shimano components and front suspension. If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a road bike and that it is in good mechanical order.

Day 1 : NATIVE COUNTRY – NOSY BE HELL VILLE
Flight to NOSY BE HELL VILLE
Welcome and transfer to the hotel
City tour, ylang ylang plantation, moment of relaxation.
Dinner and overnight stay at hotel .
Day 2 : GRANDES TERRE AND TRADITIONAL VILLAGES
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the port of Hell-Ville.
Speedboat crossing to the village of Ankify, on Grande Terre.
Departure by car for Ambanja, then ascent of the track that runs along the Sambirano River, through a green landscape, where rice fields, plantations and villages follow one another. The Sambirano valley is the economic lung of the region, as evidenced by the incessant comings and goings of bicycles and motorbikes.
From the track, start of the hike starting with Ambolobozy, a village surrounded by centuries-old baobabs where you cross the river by canoe to reach the other side. Picnic on the banks of the Manambaro river and continuation of the walk along the Sambirano valley which appears in all its splendor with its typical villages and cocoa plantations.
Before arriving in Andranomandevy, the path borders a swamp fed by the sacred hot spring which gave its name to the village. This is the ideal time to observe its inhabitants: hundreds of birds nest in this mysterious place.
Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 3 : VALLEE DE SAMBIRANO
Breakfast at the camp by the river and departure for a 2 to 3 hour walk to the village of Morafeno.
Our local guide teaches us all about cocoa, coffee, pepper as well as the habits and customs of the Sambirano Valley.
Morafeno is the village of blacksmiths, making tools for picking and tending plantations. Crossing the river on foot or by canoe depending on the season.
We leave for Ambobaka by our vehicle. A beautiful walk takes us to the Bons Pères waterfall where we take the time to explore and swim. Picnic on site. Return to the vehicle and short transfer to Ambanja.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 4 : AMBANJA – DIEGO SUAREZ
Breakfast at the hotel.
Ambanja, the cocoa capital, which you will reach after about 6 hours of travel on the
National Road 6. It is in Ambanja that the best cocoa in Madagascar is produced, which has made
the Big Island famous worldwide.
Departure from Ambanja for a long road to the north , the next stage town 230 km away from Ambanja is Diego Suarez .The landscape is dotted with typical villages of Antakarana and fields of cashew trees (cashew nuts).
Arrival in Diego Suarez in the middle of the afternoon, a short tour of the town of Dègo Suarez is still a must. Diego Suarez has a particular cachet.
Installation at the hotel, night and dinner.
Day 5 : CAP DIEGO BAOBAB FOREST AND « MONTAGNES DES FRANÇAIS »
Today, our vehicle takes us to the peninsula of Cap Diego, just opposite Diego Suarez.
We continue on foot along the small cliffs and through a few villages. Along the way, we cross some vestiges of the fortifications erected by Marshal Joffre to then arrive at a forest of baobabs, proof of the strong endemism of Madagascar.
Return to the city of Diego Suarez. Our driver is waiting for us there to take us to the foot of the Montagne des Français.
Discovery of the Montagne des Français with an excellent guide.
Many baobabs and it is here that we find this quite curious baobab, the Adansonia suarezensis, in the shape of a cross. Arriving at the top after 650 steps, we discover the bay of Diego Suarez with its legendary sugar loaf Nosy Lonjo , in the distance the emerald sea.
Day 6 : TROIS BAIES
We leave this morning for a coastal hike. This beautiful pedestrian route allows us to connect three bays: Baie des Dunes, Baie des Pigeons and Baie de Sakalava.
The pass that separates Diego Bay from the Indian Ocean is very close, we are now at Cape Miné. This place is steeped in history, the vestiges of the French presence are still visible. We then stroll on the beautiful beaches of Orangea and Ramena.
After the hike and visit, let’s take the car back to the amber mountain.
Day 7 : MONTAGNE D’AMBRE
Breakfast at the hotel
In the program : Amber Mountain National Park.
Walk in primary forest to discover waterfalls, lakes, tree ferns, orchids, lemurs, chameleons…
Seven species of lemurs out of the 70 species in Madagascar, rub shoulders there. Five species like the day and are therefore diurnal and two species prefer the night. Randomly on the walk, you will meet birds – there are more than 75 species – and reptiles including the smallest chameleon in the world, the Tuberculous Brookesia. Picnic lunch in the park.
Then visit the town of Joffreville.
At the end of the afternoon, you will return to Diègo Suarez and you will spend the night in the same
Dinne at the hotel.
Day 8 : DIEGO – TSINGY ROUGES – ANKARANA
It is another variety of tsingy that we invite you to discover on this 8th day of your trip to
Madagascar, a dream island. During your transfer to the Tsingy Rouge private park, you will already have a taste of the great adventure you are about to experience.
These tsingy prove to be fragile but you will have the opportunity to contemplate them, in particular the big and the small red tsingy, as well as the Canyon. Their ocher silhouettes rising in front of you majestic and austere, give the red tsingy the vision of an exceptional landscape, of an unreal world.
Picnic lunch.
Continue to the rural village of Mahamasina.
