With Capercaillie (“the most exciting and vibrant band in the field of Celtic music today” – Billboard ), Karen Matheson has enjoyed a stellar career. Capercaillie have sold more than a million albums, performed in over 30 countries and written and featured in the blockbuster movie Rob Roy with Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange, in which Karen performed a solo rendition of a Gaelic lament.
In December 2010 she was presented with an Honorary degree in music from the Robert Gordon University – another achievement to add to her OBE, and award of “Best Gaelic Singer” from the inaugural Scottish folk awards – just some of the many plaudits earned during an astonishing career.
In 2015 she released Urram (Respect) – a collection of timeless Gaelic songs that evoke the character of her Hebridean roots, through walking songs, love songs, lullabies, mouth music and evocative poems to the surroundings. The sound of the album is engagingly contemporary in its ambition though, with guest musicians including Seiko Keita (Senegal) on African kora, Soumik Datta (India) on Sarod, Scotland’s Mr. McFall’s chamber on strings.
As a solo performer, Karen has been involved in various projects worldwide including the award-winning BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, where over the last decade she has filmed tracks with artists like James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters, Nanci Griffith, and a host of respected Scottish musicians. Her many collaborators have included Algerian singer Idir, Breton guitarist Dan Ar Braz and Portuguese star Dulce Pontes and the late Pete Seeger.
Highlights have included sharing the stage with Pete Seeger in New York and performing at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where her stunning rendition of ‘Ae fond kiss’ stole the show to a televised audience of over 600 million people.

40 years and counting
From our homeland roots of Argyll in the highlands of Scotland, Capercaillie have been credited with being the major force in bringing traditional Celtic music to the world stage and inspiring the great resurgence so evident today.
And even four ground-breaking decades after Capercaillie first performed as teenagers in our native Scottish Highlands; even as we continue the worldwide musical journey that’s taken us from the Brazilian rainforest to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, not to mention into the pop charts – it is the ancient Gaelic culture that still inspires us most.

Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024
Nearly a quarter-century on from the original Transatlantic Sessions TV series, the live version is securely ensconced as an annual highlight not only of each year’s Celtic Connections , but - thanks to its now-annual post-festival tour - of many fans’ musical calendar throughout the UK. As No Depression put it in their 2018 review (citing co-musical director Aly Bain ), “the ‘special relationship’ across the Pond has come under scrutiny recently, but in the context of this music it remains as strong as ever.”
The incomparable Transatlantic ‘house band’, led by Shetland fiddle maestro Aly Bain and dobro virtuoso Jerry Douglas , featuring Russ Barenberg , Phil Cunningham , John Doyle , Michael McGoldrick , John McCusker , Donald Shaw , Danny Thompson and James Mackintosh will be joined by a generation-spanning array of guests for 2019. Among them, Nashville-based New Yorker Gretchen Peters recently followed up her double AMA Award-winning Blackbirds with more rave reviews for Dancing With the Beast, whose characteristically vivid, eloquent story-songs address post-Trump and #MeToo themes. It’s always a treat to welcome back the great Tim O’Brien , whose own new release, Where the River Meets the Road, covers songwriters from his native West Virginia including Doc Williams, Larry Groce, Bill Withers and the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers.
Aged just 25, and already crowned in 2017 as the first-ever female IBMA Awards Guitar Player of the Year, Californian wunderkind Molly Tuttle picked up 2018’s AMA Instrumentalist of the Year, plus Song of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards – all before releasing her debut album.
Celtic voices among the line-up include the incomparable Cara Dillon , whose transcendent interpretation of traditional exile and emigration songs, on her latest album Wanderer, were summed up by the Observer as “gorgeous homesick blues”. Scotland’s own Paul McKenna has long been ranked among our finest younger singers and songwriters, whose voice and passionate conviction are often likened to Dick Gaughan.
