The reefs are in fact also atolls, although mostly submerged, with only small unvegetated sand cays above the high-water mark. The submerged banks are sunken atolls. Almost all the atolls have a northeast-southwest orientation with the islands lying on the eastern rim, and a mostly submerged reef on the western rim, enclosing a lagoon. It has 10 inhabited islands, 17 uninhabited islands, attached islets, 4 newly formed islets and 5 submerged reefs.

The main islands are Kavaratti, Agatti, Minicoy, and Amini. The total population of the territory is 60,595 according to the 2001 census. Agatti has an airport with direct flights from Kochi.

Cabin Types

Costa Cruise India Interior Cabins

Which cabin should I book?

A lot of first time cruisers choose an inside cabin (an internal cabin without a window) solely due to their budget or simply because they spend maximum time at the lounge, spa, deck or activity area and only require a room for sleep and changeover. However you will be surprised to know that there is normally a very small difference to upgrade to an ocean view cabin (cabin with a view). For a whole different experience think about upgrading to a balcony cabin or mini-suite. In life, few things are worth spending a little extra money on, and a cabin with a balcony or mini-suite is worth everything. Trust Triplou!

How far in advance can I book my cruise?

Choice and availability are best when booked early. Oftentimes certain categories of cabins sell out; especially during peak seasons, so the sooner you can book the better.

What can I do onboard Costa Cruise?

As you soak in the breathtaking view of the tranquil sea and experience the grandeur of India’s First Premium Luxury Cruise Ship, you’ll be treated to loads of surprises and delightful moments. The lucky guests can enjoy high-quality accommodation such as mini-suites, cabins with ocean view and balcony, interconnecting rooms; all featuring plenty of amenities, gourmet cuisines, live entertainment, broadway musicals, burlesque performance, a breathtaking pool deck, multiple spa treatments, exciting excursions, world-class service and much more all included. Though the best part about Costa cruises is the multicuisine gourmet food; from five, six and seven-course dinners down to the burger from the grill, khaman dhokla of Gujarat to the fiery Mumbai vadapav and pav bhaji, Delhi chaat to Kolkata rolls, Goan omelette pav to Chennai idli & dosa….everything you crave for from the Indian Street can be enjoyed at the high seas.

What about the night life?

Night life is the main highlight of a cruise holiday. That’s when life onboard a cruise ship really turns on. There’s dancing, live entertainment, broadway musicals, discos and lounges, casino, feature films, and parties with all loves ones as well as new friends. And the night can go on as long as you want. Even until the spectacle of sunrise at sea.

Are there smoking areas on the ship?

There are smoking areas on the ship – these are normally in designated areas. In principle, smoking is not permitted in any onboard common areas, passage ways, swimming pools, entertainment areas, theatre, conference halls, any decks, onboard shops, food service areas (buffets and restaurants, the medical centres, child-care areas, corridors or elevator foyers, areas where Guests are assembled in groups for safety exercises, disembarkation or tour departures, public toilets, or in bars close to areas where food is served). Smoking is strictly prohibited in all staterooms and stateroom balconies.

What documents do I need to book a cruise?

Proof of citizenship is required for everyone sailing aboard Cordelia cruise. Indian nationals may provide their Passport, Driving Licensee, PAN Card, Voters Card or Aadhaar Card for entry into port and embarkation. For Foreign nationals, Passport is mandatory (please check with the Indian Immigration Office for precise documents apart from valid Passport)

Do I need to purchase travel insurance if traveling locally?

A Travel Insurance gives you and your loved ones peace of mind and protection in the face of an emergency. We have seen many cases of people having to cancel their holiday bookings at the last moment and losing almost the entire value of their fare due to injury, sickness, or death of a travelling companion or immediate family member. Unfortunately, there are a myriad of other unforeseeable circumstances that could occur when traveling to a new place, and travel insurance can protect your vacation investment. Whether you’re looking for medical coverage in a foreign country or want to protect your belongings, there is an insurance policy that is right for you. Our Cruise Experts will be delighted to assist you with the appropriate Travel Insurance policy for you and your loved ones. Also if you currently have travel insurance, be sure to understand what is covered and excluded.

What is cancellation policy?

Cochin Cruise Port Guide: docked

In Cochin there are currently 2 cruise docks, both of them are on Wellington island. Check the map above to see where these 2 spots are exactly. Usually you dock at the cruise terminal which is only open on when the ship has a (dis)embarkation day. At both docks you are about 10 km away from the old town of Cochin.

Public Transport in Cochin

There is public transport available at the docks. One of the best ways to get around is to take the ferry across to city centre. For just a few rupee you can get all over Cochin. There is always a ferry jetty close by the ship and the best thing to do is to spot them from the ship when you are sailing in. The ferries look like the boats on the picture on the left hand side. Spot these and you’ll know where the ferry stations are. The 2 stops that you want to know about are the stop at Jewish town and Chinese fishing nets. Always double check if the ferry is going there before you step on.

Taxi and rickshaw

There is a limited amount of taxis waiting for you at the port. There is an abundance of rickshaws / tuk tuks waiting for you at the port. The rickshaws are recognisable yellow and black and they have meter although they don’t really want to use these for tourist. The rickshaws/tuk tuks can take you around for approximately 10 dollars per hours, depending on your negotiation skills. Often people say it is 20 US dollars one way to get into the city of Cochin, but you will notice it is possible to do it for 5 USD. Simply walk off the pier and start the negotiation!

Destination and distance:

Fort Cochin – 10 km west Jew town – 10 km west

Alappuzha (Kerala backwaters) – 60 km south

This church was originally built in 1503. That makes it the oldest European church in India. But there is more to this church than just a pretty facade. The famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Cochin in 1524. This was during his 3rd visit to India. The spot where he originally was buried was right here in this church. It was only after 14 years that his body was moved to Lisbon where it still finds its final resting place.

Jew town road

For quite some time a small Jewish community has been living in Cochin. At the heart of the Jewish neighbourhood we find Jew Town Road. This is nowadays one of the best places for shopping. Stroll the streets for any kind of souvenir or form of art. It is a really nice and cozy neighbourhood, even non-shoppers should at least get a taste for this part of Cochin.

In the city centre of Cochin you will find an old ruined for called Fort Emmanuel. It was the first fortifications that the Rajah allowed the Portuguese to build here. From here the Portuguese were eventually able to spread their colony and commercial interests. Today you will hardly recognise it as a fort because today it completely disappears into the city centre of Cochin.

Sailing into Cochin is beautiful and it is a great introduction of the city. Just before you leave open sea you often have the opportunity to see small dolphins, lots of fishing boats and eagles. Than your ship will leave open sea and sail past the old town of Cochin. Make sure to set your alarm clock for this!

Cochin India Port Guide

Whether you refer to it as Kochi or Cochin, this port city offers a picturesque, seaside stop on an India cruise unlike any other. With influences from British, Dutch, and Portuguese settlement over the past 500 or so years, Kochi feels especially global, whether you’re stopping for coffee at the local Kashi Art Cafe or touring Fort Kochi on your own.

See the famous Chinese fishing nets, one of the most photographable spots in Kochi, and peruse the catches of the day with the local fishermen. Or, take an excursion beyond Kochi to Alappuzha during your Cochin cruise, indulging in thali and kebabs after a day’s boat ride on the Arabian Sea. Luckily, Kochi itself is pretty walkable, and most sights are close to one another. Less bustling than Mumbai, Cochin retains a small town charm ideal for unhurried exploration.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to cochin, chinese fishing nets.

Travelers come from all over the world to see Kochi’s biggest sight, the Chinese fishing nets, which are giant relics from the 14th century and still in use today. The nets dangle over the beautiful sea below and serve as a reminder of how Kochi’s fishing industry drove the town into economic prosperity. Stroll the waterfront, take photos of the nets, or watch as teams of 20 odd fishermen operate them effortlessly.

St. Francis Church

Within Fort Kochi is the one of the oldest European churches in all of India, and it’s the sight where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama was originally buried. Take a walk through the church’s ornate interior, a testament to European architecture unlike anything else in Kochi. Today, locals in Kochi revere the church for the story it tells about Kochi’s past.

Mattancherry Palace

Once a gift to the Portuguese colonizers who came to Kochi, the Mattancherry Palace was later dubbed “The Dutch Palace”. Tour the grounds of the palace and don’t miss the beautifully preserved Hindu murals painted all over the palace walls. They’re a colorful piece of history in Cochin.

Indo-Portuguese Museum

For those who want to learn about Kochi’s rich history of occupations, including switching hands between the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British, head to the Indo-Portuguese Museum within Fort Kochi. You’ll learn about the history of Catholicism here and how these settlers impacted the area for years to come. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.

Top things to do in cochin, tour fort kochi.

A tour of Fort Kochi is how you’ll be able to see historic places like St. Francis Church, or interact with local fishermen near the famous Chinese Fishing Nets. While you’re walking around Fort Kochi, you’ll be transported back in time to the humble beginnings of this quaint port city. It’s an ideal activity for a laid-back day during your cruise.

Take a Boat Ride in Alappuzha

Only a half hour from Kochi is the town of Alappuzha, which is affectionately nicknamed the “Venice of the East” for its elaborate network of canals and its famous houseboat cruises through them. Walk the pier, which is nearly 150 years old, and enjoy a kettuvallam, a thatched roof boat ride which is like a house on the water. Relax and float on before returning to your Cochin cruise ship.

See a Kathakali Dance

The Kathakali dance tradition is over 300 years old and is a hallmark of the state of Kerala. Becoming a skilled dancer in this style takes years of rigorous training. Head to Kathakali Club in Kochi for a chance to see incredible performers in action, dressed in elaborate costumes and full makeup. It’s a must-see cultural experience during your time here.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Cochin Cruise Port

Specializing in North Indian cuisine, Dal Roti is a favorite among locals and tourists in Kochi. The menu is massive, featuring different delicacies and combinations of kati rolls, and thali, which are must-try dishes at Dal Roti. Inside, it is minimally decorated and unpretentious, so the food really is the star here.

Kashi Art Cafe

Sit under one of the red umbrellas on the patio and sip a cold drink at Kashi Art Cafe, where sandwiches and salads rule the menu. Art from local artists line the walls of the cafe. The entire place has a local flavor to it that’ll make you feel right at home. Try the veggie burger with a cold lemonade.

Head here for a strong cup of coffee while stopped on your Kochi cruise. There’s often live music and entertainment during the evenings. In the mornings, it’s the perfect spot for a pick-me-up, whether you’re looking for espresso drinks or a sweet treat thanks to their selection of breakfast foods, including omelettes and French toast.

Culture & History of the Cochin Cruise Port

Kochi, otherwise known as Cochin, is a major port city in India that has a rich history of occupations, trading hands, and trading goods. During the 15th century, the Portuguese took control of Kochi, building a major factory there and a fort to guard their growing trade and industry presence. Then, the Dutch invaded and brought economic prosperity to the region by exporting Kochi’s spices and everything from coconut to cardamom. Because of Kochi’s strategic position on the Arabian Sea, it grew in allure and colonizers scrambled to claim it. In 1795, the British took ownership of Cochin and facilitated building the port. The area didn’t claim independence for nearly 200 years until 1945. Since its independence, Kochi has blossomed as both a trade and tourism destination for visitors from all over the world

Cochin Port Facilities & Location

Celebrity Cruise ships dock in nearby Willingdon Island, which was artificially made in the 1930s and used by British military before becoming a hub for cruisers exploring Cochin. You’ll find souvenir shops, cafes, and wifi in local shops near here, or you can quickly hop on a ferry to get to Cochin proper once you’re off the ship.

Transportation in Cochin

Once your Cochin cruise ship docks, look for the local ferry located near the ship that will take you to various stops. Rickshaws and taxis are two of the most popular ways to navigate around Cochin, and it’s recommended you haggle on your fare before taking off with a taxi driver. Uber and rickshaw-hailing app Ola are two popular ride-sharing alternatives to the traditional yellow taxi system. If you’re feeling daring on the streets of Cochin, bikes and scooters are available for rent for short periods, too.

Shopping Near the Cochin Cruise Port

Check out the street markets in Cochin for spices, Indian fabrics, and vintage clothing items. A lot of the newer shopping, specifically for electronics and clothing, can be found in malls around Edappally, which has become known for its sheer variety of options for shoppers. The vendors near the terminal won’t typically sell high-end items, but they’ll hawk the standard trinkets and tourist fare.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You’ll use the Indian rupee as the official currency while on your Kochi cruise. Currency exchanges are found at the cruise port and around the city at various banks. Tipping isn’t always expected, but it is appreciated as a mark of quality service. While you’re shopping in India, haggling and bargaining is always encouraged to ensure you get a fair deal. In food service, like for your server or bartender, a 15-20% tip is highly recommended.

Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, claim they have been stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.

Jill and Jay Campbell, from South Carolina, said they are stuck on the Central African island of São Tomé with four other American and two Australian passengers after the captain of the ship allegedly refused to let them reboard,  according to WMBF.

But a spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time.”

A passenger being refused to board the ship.

“Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel,” the spokesperson said.

The Campbells acknowledged there was “an issue” on their tour of the island, and the guide “didn’t get us back” to the ship in time on Friday.

“We were like, our time is getting really short, and they were like ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,” Jay recounted telling the tour guide.

He said the tour operator then contacted the cruise ship captain to let them know they would be late.

One elderly passenger that was abandoned.

When they reached the port, Campbell said the ship was still anchored, and the island’s Coast Guard took them on a boat to a ship in order to get back onboard.

The captain then allegedly refused to let them board.

  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us and then go on the way,” Campbell said.

“They had no port to call for the next day, they were simply going to be at sea.”

They and the others — including a married couple from Delaware, a paraplegic and an elderly man with a heart condition — were left stranded on the island without any of their belongings from the cabin, including money, medicine and necessary travel documents.

Some of the stranded passengers.

The Campbells were the only ones who had a Visa card on their person, and had to pay more than $5,000 in food, toiletries and hotels for the group, they told WRAL.

In an updated statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines noted that “guests are responsible for any necessary travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.”

Knowing this, the group had planned to fly to Gambia in West Africa to meet the cruise ship at the port on Sunday.

They then spent 15 hours traveling through six countries to reach the port on Easter, only to find out that the ship could not dock due to low tides,  according to WPDE.

The passengers are now heading to a port in Senegal, where the cruise is set to dock on Tuesday.

But doing so is not going to be easy.

8 cruise ship passengers were left stranded on an African Island.

“What we looked at was some type of van transportation for eight people, the quadriplegic woman included, driving from here,” Jay told WPDE.

“We have to cross the ferry to get into Senegal,” he added. “We just learned from the gentleman that the ferry hadn’t been working, but he said, ‘No problem, if the ferry is not working, we will get another little boat and then pick up a car on the other side.

“And then once we get on the other side of Senegal, it’s another four hour drive.”

Still, Jay said the voyage is worth it.

“We paid a lot for this trip to Africa, so we hope to make it through the rest of this trip and end in Spain,” he told WBMF.

In its updated statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for Norwegian said they are “in communication with the guests” and have been working “closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed if the guests were to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.”

The Post has also reached out to Norwegian Cruise Lines for comment.
