A Top NYC Food Tour on TripAdvisor

My boyfriend and I decided to take a food tour of Chinatown and Little Italy to try some new foods and learn about the culture/ history of these neighborhoods and Hannah did not disappoint! As a picky eater, this was a great way to open up a bit more while learning + sightseeing the area. Hannah provided great insight into how these neighborhood + cuisine developed, answered tour and non-tour related questions, and made this a great experience for us. You could tell Hannah truly enjoys sharing this experience and I would recommend this to tourist and locals alike!

Because honestly:

Not only have I lived in NYC WELL over twenty years (I’ve been a resident of this fantastic city a whole lot longer but no way am I going to tell you exactly how long so that you can do the math and determine my age), but I also love food about as much as I love breathing.

Breathing wins out ever-so-slightly, but only because I can live without food a whole lot longer than air. 

What I’m trying to get at is that if anyone would know all about good food in NYC, it would be this chick right here.

In my humble opinion:

Life is uncertain and you should forever and always eat dessert first.

That’s what my mom told me and I am definitely sticking with her sage advice. Which is why this epic cupcake tour is perfect for someone like me who has a sabertooth tiger size sweet tooth!

Not only does it reinforce all of the ULTRA-IMPORTANT life lessons that my dear mother taught me (LOL), but it’s also a dream activity for anyone out there who basically never met a piece of cake that they didn’t like or who wants to know exactly where New Yorkers eat .

Because I mean really:

Where else in the world are you encouraged to not only eat dessert but to eat MULTIPLE desserts within a two-hour time frame?

Yeah, the answer is nowhere, that’s where!

That’s why,  this cupcake tour is like this super awesome, alternate reality where you’re encouraged to “try” as many desserts as possible.

And I for one am forever down with any and all New York food tours that make it socially acceptable for me to eat like 12 desserts in one sitting.

The desserts you get on this tour are just tiny “samples” that obviously contain like one calorie a piece.

At least, that’s what i tell myself to rationalize my sugar addiction. In reality:

You’ll actually stop at like 6 different locations (Stops include Molly’s Cupcakes, Baked by Melissa , Amorino, Milk & Cookies, etc.) and will definitely not leave this tour hungry.

But not to worry because if you get full along the way:

You can just take some of the cupcakes home with you, minus the gelato since that food really isn’ a save for later kind of food.

And while all of the fine purveyors of dessert that you’ll sample along this NYC food tour are good…

My personal fave will always be Molly’s Cupcakes! I’ve been there a couple of times and am OBSESSED with building my own cupcake here (it also doesn’t hurt that this store sits along the beautiful perimeter of Washington Square Park).

Last time I was here:

I ordered a vanilla cupcake, with brown butter frosting, and DUH, rainbow sprinkles. 

Yeah, I STILL dream about that cupcake since it was that amazing.

Here’s the thing:

When you come to New York City, you need to have at least one slice of New York-style pizza while you’re here.

Preferably more, but one will suffice if you’re lactose intolerant.

With like a billion pizza places on every corner (literally), things can go very, very wrong, very, very quickly.

That’s why:

You will leave our tour with a full stomach, a full mind, and a full heart. We advise that you DO NOT eat a large meal before this tour. Come hungry and wear stretchy pants!

Our tours are often sold out very quickly. If the date you requested is not available, please do not hesitate to email us and we can see if there is anything we can do. We cannot promise but we will try our best to sort something out for you.

We strongly advise wearing comfortable walking shoes. Our tour runs a little over 3 hours. Although we have several seated food stops, we cover a good deal of ground around Greenwich Village as well. Our pace is moderate, but if you need a slower pace, let us know.

We take 12 people max. If you are more than 12 people, please do not hesitate to email us and will try to see if we can accommodate.

I set up this tour for a corporate team building event. The tour was the perfect balance of site seeing, sampling food, and socializing. It wasn't too rushed, and certainly wasn't boring. Dante has great interpersonal skills and was able to remember all 23 of our names by the end of the tour. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Dante was a great and fun host, and the "nice guy" tour is appropriately named. Over three hours, he took us to seven food stops in Greenwich Village and discussed the history, culture, and architecture of the village along the way. Among the food stops, there were two VERY different styles of pizza, one of which I had never heard of (and I eat a lot of pizza). It was a really fun time!

Such a friendly guy, Ian introduced himself to each of the 12 in our group, and he constantly checked in with us to be sure we were enjoying ourselves. The West Village is a fascinating web of small streets and interesting businesses, particularly the restaurants on the tour.

Today my husband and I did the Greenwich tour with Dante. We were recommended by a friend, and couldn’t have been happier! Not only did we eat great food, but we learned about the area and history as well. You can truly tell how much Dante loves his hometown, but I was more pleased to see the great relationship he seemed to have with the restaurants we went to. This was our second tour with Dante, and it was like seeing the city with an old friend. Very relaxing and fun afternoon! Loved the variety of foods - a great way to sample many different foods, and Katz deli pastrami sandwich was delicious. Loved the doughnuts from Doughnut Plant and pastries from Russell and Daughters as well. Dante is a great tour guide and this tour is an excellent way to get an overview of the foods of NYC.

Had an amazing tour with Juan of Chelsea Market, the Highline, and Hudson Yard. Juan was very knowledgable about the area, the history and fun facts along the way. He made sure we had everything we needed and kept us moving at a good pace. He was upbeat, fun and caring. I would request Juan for another tour for sure.

Fantastic food tour (Williamsburg Bites Brooklyn Food Tour). Plenty of food and a great variety. Our guide even entertained my teenagers and made sure my seven year old always had something he liked. A great way to spend the afternoon.

Our guide knew the area's history and current best places to eat. She was both interesting and pleasant. Our tour turned out to be a private one, because the other tourists couldn't make it, but I would think she would be able to make it a nice tour for a group as well. The area is full with history and very good places to eat, I had never eaten so good in NYC.

The tour guide was so knowledgeable about the area, funny, friendly, extremely personable. I would say that the tour guide really made the tour memorable. They took us to a area in Williamsburg that was on the river and had the greatest view of the city, something we would have never found on our own. I would definitely suggest this tour if you are visiting and want to have a fun experience in Brooklyn.

A fabulous combination of one of NY's best food hotspots, and the superb High Line linear park winding it's way through incredibly varied architecture and art installations. The selection of Chelsea Market outlets we visited trying many and varied food samples was very well chosen. Our guide Kate was very knowledgeable and a great companion. Definitely a 5*+ experience.

Scott was informative, friendly and took us to some seriously delicious food places I'd never have found otherwise. Recommended!

This was such a fun experience!! We did a dessert tour w our pre-teen/teen kids and it was the highlight of our trip. They wouldn't stop talking about all the yummies for days. In fact, we went back to one of the places Scott showed us for seconds later in our trip. The fact that Scott was very knowledgable about the history and stories behind the food made it even better.

What a fun day we had with Scott sampling Chinatown dishes. My sisters and I had a great tour with Scott (the owner). Age food was delicious and Scott was very informative and flexible. I highly recommend the Chinatown tour. It was so much fun.

I had the pleasure of taking the Jewish Food Tour with Ultimate Food Tours, and it was an amazing experience! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the jewish history of the neighborhood and took us to some of the best food spots. We tried everything from the best smoked slamon to the best black and white cookie, and everything was delicious! Can't wait to go for a 2nd round and explore a different part of the New York food scene!

The best food tour we've ever done! We chose to do a food tour in Chinatown so we knew what we were eating & avoid shellfish because of allergies! Not only did we ate at 4 of the best little hidden gems but Scott's knowledge on the area & its history is incredible. All the restaurants were so happy to see him and gave us a warm welcome. We went to places we would've never even thought of going in. Didn't get intimated by the menu in Chinese cause we had Scott who knew exactly what to order at each joint. What is the best way to contact you.

Our office is not staffed at all times and because of time differences the best way to contact us is by e-mail for the quickest response. If you leave a phone message (voice mail box #2) please let us know how late we can call you in the evening or how early in the morning. HOW DO FOOD ON FOOT PUBLIC GUIDED TOUR TICKETS WORK?

       Our Food On Foot Guided Public Food Tour calendar posts on the 16 th day of the previous month up 

       to two months earlier. Since our food tours are different than standard food tours and you choose       

       what you like at each stop you may choose tickets with a food credit or tickets where you

       pay-as-you-go. Either way the tour is the same but each ticket type has different cancellation options

       so choose your ticket based on your needs.  We do not deviate from the terms for the ticket you buy.

       Like any concert, sports or theater ticket your ticket(s) are considered a purchase and you are

       responsible for the cost of your tickets or cancellation fees based on the terms of the ticket you buy. 

       Our spaces are very limited and once you book a ticket you are preventing someone else from 

       booking that space so cancellation options are not free and are considered a courtesy. Cancellation     

       fees increase the closer you get to your tour date. There are no cancellations of any type for any      

       reason within 24 hours of tour start times. Private travel insurance is available on the open     

       market as we do not issue refunds for free at any time for any reason. These rules also apply to any 

       tickets offered by travel partner companies unless otherwise stated in their agreement or on their 

       listing or app. If you are part of a program that offers tickets that are booked under their terms it is 

       important to note that we do not decide what to offer you. That is strictly their decision.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BOOK A TOUR OR EVENT?

For public tours and events the only way to purchase tickets is online here or via the book button above. The public food tour schedule posts on or before the 16th of the previous month. Public food tours run from mid-March until the first week of January.  Other public tours including Spirits On Foot and Food For Fans Sports Tours have a varied schedule. Private tours are available all times of year based on availability. For private and group tours and events please contact the Food On Foot office directly.

Food On Foot started as a food tour company but we are now full service offering all types of food and sports related tours and events for individuals and groups.

WHAT DOES FOOD ON FOOT OFFER?

Let’s start with what’s made us famous, our Food On Foot Guided Tours both public and private. Other tours that we offer include our Spirits On Foot Tours (21 and over please), Food For Fans Group Sports Tours and the Self-Guided On Your Own Neighborhood Food Experiences. Our events include the Gourmet NY Tasting- a unique experience for groups in New York’s leading food halls for local meetings, events, parties and visitor groups and the Queens-Flushing Meadows International Food Excursion. We also offer our curated unbiased Custom Restaurant Recommendation Service for travelers coming to New York. We help you in enhancing your New York experience!

ARE THESE PUBLIC OR PRIVATE EVENTS AND TOURS?

Most of our events and many of our tours are for small private or larger groups. Publicly scheduled events and tours are listed on our calendar as they become available and require the purchase of tickets. Public events include Food for Fans Guided Sports Tours. Food On Foot Scheduled Guided Food Tours, Spirits On Foot Tours and the Queens-Flushing Meadows International Food Excursion.  All other events, services and tours are private for individuals, couples, families and any type of small and large group.

WHAT IF I BOOKED TICKETS OR HAVE AN OFFER THROUGH AN OUTSIDE SOURCE?

Food On Foot does have on-going and changing relationships with companies in the travel industry. If you have an offer through an outside vendor you must follow the instructions provided by that vendor on their app or website and use any booking codes they provide. If you book tickets through us and then go to any outside vendor for tickets your tickets may be non-refundable or incur a cancellation fee based on the type of ticket you purchased.

WHAT ARE THE TERMS ON PUBLIC TOUR AND EVENT TICKETS? CAN I GET A REFUND?

All of our public tours and events have one or more ticket options. You need a ticket for our tours and events because capacity is limited. We do not accept reservations under any circumstances no matter how or where you purchase your tickets. Scroll down on the booking platform for each tour/event to see ticket types. If you want a cancellation option do not purchase non-refundable tickets. Like concert, sporting event and theater venues we do not refund those tickets under any circumstances, personal or otherwise. These tickets are often the lowest cost option because you are guaranteeing your full payment at booking. Tickets with cancellation options incur a fee.

ARE EVENTS & TOURS YEAR-ROUND?

Events can be booked all year based on their availability. Not all events and tours are available year around. Always come hungry!

The tour begins as you head north out of Midtown into the heart of Hell's Kitchen. Your friendly local guide is a true food fanatic and can't wait to share the neighborhood's hidden gems! As you begin your small group walking tour, your guide will tell the history of Hell's Kitchen and how it became home to immigrants from all over the world. This mix of global influences has seen the neighborhood explode into one of the most exciting and eclectic culinary destinations in New York.

A Standout Food Tour!

I've been on a lot of food tours across the US and Europe and this one stands out as one of the best! Our tour guide Alex did an absolutely outstanding job of describing both the food we ate and the history of Hell's Kitchen. The food stops were all unique, delicious, and well-thought-out. It was super well-paced and Alex kept us really entertained with his narrative of the Irish Mob in the area and the progression of Hell's Kitchen through the decades. I would highly recommend this to anyone either visiting New York for the first time or you've been there before.

Enjoyed the history lesson of HELLS KITCHEN. The food was fabulous. Ate our way through town-You won’t need dinner.

Good Luck Getting Your Hands on Buldak Carbonara Ramen

With its bright pink packaging and spicy contents, these Korean-made instant ramen packs are going viral online and flying off shelves.

What kind of gift could make a little girl cry tears of joy at her very pink birthday party? A puppy? A Stanley cup ? A ticket to Disney World?

In a 33-second video posted on TikTok earlier this month, the source of elation is a bright pink pack of buldak carbonara ramen. As of Friday, the video has garnered more than 57.7 million views and 43,000 comments, including “She’s so real for this,” and “That was a fair reaction, buldak carbonara noodles are so good.”

Around the world, millions have been charmed by the product from Samyang Food, on shelves since 2017 but only recently the object of viral fascination. (In January, search queries on Google for “buldak carbonara” quintupled compared with the same period of the previous year, when search interest first began to rise.)

Recipe: Ramen Carbonara

This year it seems to have reached the attention of the food obsessed — including the rapper Cardi B and the TikTok food critic Keith Lee — all of them enamored with the heat-tinged instant noodles and often going to great lengths to get their hands on them. In her own video, Cardi B describes how she drove — well, her driver did — 30 minutes to find the noodles.

It’s a testament to the noodles’ popularity that even celebrities have a hard time tracking them down. Though buldak carbonara ramen is sold at major U.S. retailers, including Amazon, Walmart and Carrs-Safeway, as well as Korean grocery stores , the internet is filled with reports about the elusive noodles.

Why the obsession? In a sea of ramen options, Samyang Food’s buldak carbonara ramen possesses the ease and appeal of boxed macaroni and cheese, albeit one spiked with invigorating heat and a glossy, electric orange veneer absent in the final presentation of instant noodle competitors.

Atop this blank canvas, people add chopped scallions, toasted sesame seeds, soft-boiled eggs, a handful of shredded cheese or a dash of milk for extra creaminess — because, why not?

Eric Ehler, the chef at Outta Sight Pizza in San Francisco, believes that part of buldak carbonara’s lightning in a bottle moment comes from making a widely popular dish, spaghetti carbonara , more accessible.

“This is a version of carbonara that you can recreate,” Mr. Ehler said. “Not everyone is going to have guanciale or Pecorino Romano at home — but they will probably have a green shaker of Parmesan cheese, some mayonnaise or peanut butter to doctor up the dish.”

“ Buldak ,” which translates to “fire chicken” in Korean, refers to a kind of barbecue chicken dish that packs intense heat. Kim Jung-soo, the chief executive of the Samyang Roundsquare conglomerate, told The Wall Street Journal in January that she discovered inspiration for the insanely popular instant ramen flavor at a fried-rice restaurant in Seoul renowned for its fiery flavor.

Ms. Kim and Samyang’s food-development team spent months researching before landing on the company’s original buldak flavor, which debuted in 2012, introducing a level of spice previously unseen in the instant ramen market. At 4,404 units on the Scoville scale — roughly the heat level of jalapeño peppers, though the perceived heat is arguably much greater — the arrival of such a product was music to the ears of a generation already enamored with Takis and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

“We expect the spicy trend to continue and open the doors to new variations of spicy,” Ms. Kim told The Wall Street Journal. In 2023, Samyang Foods Company announced that cumulative sales of its ramen surpassed 5 billion units with a total revenue reaching 3 trillion won ($2.3 billion). The company’s current market cap value is estimated at around $1.46 billion and doesn’t show signs of slowing down.

The carbonara spinoff has been welcomed by a cozy corner of the internet for a multitude of reasons. But the main driver of its success is simple: “It looks so good on camera,” said Cassie Yeung, a content creator who discovered Buldak carbonara, like everyone else, while scrolling through her “For You” page on TikTok.

“You can almost smell and taste the dish. It makes you hungry, it makes you crave it and you want to go recreate it yourself,” said Ms. Yeung, whose own buldak carbonara video has earned nearly 700,000 likes on TikTok. (One comment: “Just went down a Buldak ramen rabbit hole and now I need to find them ASAP.”)

Ms. Yeung said that some of her best performing videos on social platforms have centered on instant noodles, possibly because they are so accessible.

“Not everything has to be the most sophisticated plated dish,” she said. “Some of the best dishes are the ones that you throw together with little to no effort.”

Guess who’s back in Detroit? Keith Lee, one of the most viral names in online food reviewing and a native son of the Motor City, raised in the Joy Road and Evergreen area on the westside, has arrived in the city and is ready to eat. The TikTok personality returned with his family for a visit this week and is asking for recommendations of local restaurants that want to be reviewed.

It’s a busy time to go check out restaurants in Detroit, as Lee pointed out in a post published Thursday, April 25. There’s the NFL Draft taking place downtown (which is already breaking attendance records with a whopping 275,000 visitors who descended upon the central business district on Day One of the Draft). Helping to kick off the football festivities, another Detroit native, Big Sean, delighted fans Thursday with a quick performance on the Draft stage.

In light of the chaos overtaking much of the city’s hospitality industry during the Draft, Lee says he’s not treating this trip as a “full food tour,” but is rather taking this time to revisit some of his beloved childhood favorites, like coneys, corned beef egg rolls, and Better Made chips.

Lee wasted no time with the taste-testing, first stopping by Hart Plaza — the NFL Draft Experience area site, where dozens of local restaurants, food trucks, and cafes are set up for the festivities. He appreciated the fact that many of the food vendors were Black-owned. He offered a sneak peek of what he’s getting into food-wise during this current visit by checking out a tray of wings from Good Vibes Lounge . He reported that the East English Village establishment had just gotten hit (presumably by a car) and that the ownership was feeling “defeated.”

“God willingly, she got a space here at the NFL Draft,” Lee says, before he displays a screenshot of Good Vibe Lounge’s Instagram account to let viewers know how to find the neighborhood bar and restaurant.

“God don’t make no mistakes,” added Lee, who is known for his spiritual take on his so-called “ Keith Lee effect .” Eater has reached out to Lee via email about his visit and will report any updates when they become available.

Lee has become a household fixture among the food-obsessed for his food tours in cities across the United States, including San Francisco , New Orleans , Dallas , Chicago , and Atlanta — a destination that went viral for its many dramatic instances of bad experiences. A native Detroiter, who now lives in Las Vegas, Lee has more than 16 million followers and makes it a point to visit smaller mom-and-pop establishments — often that are BIPOC-owned — that may have impressive menus, but that might be lacking in online presence. His visits are unannounced and are primarily takeout. He often sends in a family member to fetch the food when it’s ready so as not to attract attention. He rates each place 1 to 10 for customer service and the quality of the food, and makes sure to note his personal preferences whenever he scores. When he first started, he focused on Vegas-area restaurants and did his reviews while sitting in a tiny children’s-sized Paw Patrol chair, and now he most often films his reviews in his car.

The “Keith Lee effect” that his reviews have on small businesses is profound. Janel Prator, owner of the Puddery , a Houston-area dessert business featuring Prator’s creamy banana pudding, told Eater in a December 2023 report that her shop was struggling to take off before a review Lee did his did of her place in November. His influence was immediate business took off, with customers lined up from the front door eager to try her desserts.

The last time Lee paid a visit to his hometown was in September when he reviewed several beloved local food businesses, including the Spot food truck, which, according to Lee’s review, had contacted him on social media to invite him to check out its food. He ordered a steak crunchwrap supreme with Hot Cheetos (on the side) and gave the truck a rave review for its service, house-made “Turbo” sauce, and commented that the meat was seasoned to perfection. Similar to Prator’s experience, the Spot also reported traffic snaked around its truck in the days after Lee’s review went live.
