Places To Visit In Chanderi

With an array of beautiful places to visit in Chanderi, it is one of the unknown gems of Madhya Prades, rich in heritage and culture.

Places To Visit In Chanderi

“People know Chanderi for its silk sarees but most are not aware that Chanderi is a historical town with about 600 heritage properties”! says Muzaffar Ansari, aka Kalleybhai with a smile. He is indeed the face of Chanderi for the thousands who have visited the little town from across India as well as the world. For us, Kalleybhai unveiled tantalizing glimpses of the hidden treasures of Chanderi, enough for us to vow to ourselves to return for a more detailed and extended exploration. The experiences and places to visit in Chanderi are nothing less than a revelation of sorts. In the words of Kalleybhai, “Chanderi is an untouched place which has culture, history, handicrafts, nature, pre-historic sites, religion, and much more in one place”. Keep reading as we join Kalleybhai on our short voyage of discovery of Charismatic Chanderi and whet our appetite with some of the fascinating places to visit in Chanderi. After being mesmerized by the majesty of the Taj-ul-Masajid in Bhopal, the age-old treasures of Bhimbetka, the majesty of Sanchi and Udayagiri , we as part of the Times Passion Trails in collaboration with Madhya Pradesh Tourism reached the enchanting and enigmatic town of Chanderi.

Kati Ghati Chanderi

Chanderi is synonymous with its silk weaves. Weaving remains its lifeline, with around 5,000 looms that dot the town. Weaving is the occupation that supports almost the entire population of the town which numbered around 33,000 as per the last Census in 2011. Though the colourful weaves in silk did form a part of our itinerary in Chanderi, weaving a fascinating web of history that dated back to the pre-historic times, as well as stories from Chanderi Puran for us, was Muzaffar Ansari, our Chanderi Sutradhar, the man who knew the past and the present of Chanderi like the palm of his hand. But before we take you to the wonderful and historical places that are scattered like gems around Chanderi, it is but appropriate to understand a bit of the history of Chanderi as well as the legends and myths associated with it.

Buddhi Chanderi – Chanderi’s Previous Avatar

Buddhi Chanderi

To learn about the past of present-day Chanderi, it is necessary to know about a place called Buddhi Chanderi which literally means old or aged Chanderi. Budhi Chanderi is a small village about 19 kilometres from Chanderi. It is believed that Boodhi Chanderi was earlier known by the name of Chaidnagar. Chaidnagar dates back to the times of the Puranas and finds mention in the Mahabharata.

In ancient times Chaidnagar was part of a Janapada (Republic in Vedic times) that was ruled by the Chedis. As per Puranic history, the Chedi dynasty was founded by Chidi or Ched believed to be the grandfather of Shishupala. Chaidnagar was ruled by Shishupala who in the Mahabharata meets his nemesis in the form of Krishna, his own cousin. It is believed that the etymology of Chanderi too can be traced to the Chedis. The Chedis were Chandra Vanshis or members of the Lunar dynasty and hence the evolution of the name Chanderi from the word Chandrapuri or City of the moon.

Another interesting legend from Indian mythology also has a mention of Chaidnagar. The legend of the saga of Nala and Damayanti also features Chaidnagar in a small way. In the legend,  King Nala and his queen Damayanti are forced to live in the forest after the King gambles away all his possessions. Various circumstances lead to his leaving a sleeping Damayanti in the forest to fend for herself and walk away. Damyanti walks through a forest to reach a city which is believed to have been Chaidnagar, present-day Budi Chanderi. She takes refuge there in the royal palace as a maid of the queen.

Budhi Chanderi has thrown open a fascinating to the distant past of the Chanderi region. So much so that the region of Chanderi is one of the continuously inhabited regions of India. Numerous sites have been discovered in Buddhi  Chanderi and these evidence the remains of palaces and temples. Ruins of the Jain, and Hindu temples from the 9th century are testimony to the splendour of the place in the early medieval period. More than 55 Jain and Hindu temple ruins have been discovered within a single fortified enclosure.

Sadly, barring a couple of temples, the others have been reduced to ruins by the ravages of time and nature. Most of the Jain temples seem to have belonged to the Digambar sect. It is also interesting to note that some of the temples had been restored during the reign of the Bundelas as they have elements of Bundela architecture. The sculptures recovered from Buddhi Chanderi belong to Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Jainism. The principal sites of Buddhi Chanderi are the remains of a Jain monastery which encloses in its fold many temples and the remains of what is believed to be a palace, local lore identifies the palace ruins as Shisupala’s Palace though archaeological evidence dates it to the 14th-15th century AD.

Many of the beautiful remains recovered from Buddhi Chanderi are on display at the Chanderi Archaeological Museum. Buddhi Chanderi which lies in the midst of forests slowly fell into decline and the habitation shifted to present-day  Chanderi around the 11th century.

History of Chanderi

Places To Visit In Chanderi - Chanderi town

Diving into the seemingly bottomless history of Chanderi, one realizes that it goes back to the pre-historic times, to the Paleolithic period. Archaeological explorations and excavations of the area have yielded sites that are classified as pre-historic, early medieval period and medieval period.

Prehistoric tools have been found in a site labelled as Tana Bana Hotel. The tools have been found from a playground situated between the Tana Bana Hotel and Pranpura village. Middle Paleolithic tools have also been recovered near the Battisi Baoli of Chanderi. The Paleolithic tools like handaxes, cleavers, discoids, and other tools made of quartzite have been discovered in the region.

In a site known as Nanon located about 22 kilometers from Chanderi on the road that leads to Mungaoli, painted rock shelters have been discovered. The rock paintings which are probably the early expressions of Man depict scenes of everyday life like hunting, pictures of different animals, etc.. The rock paintings have been dated from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period.

There are over 12 sites around Chanderi and many being discovered on which archaeologists are working today. What is revealed of the ancient history of Chanderi seems only to be the tip of the iceberg.  One can only imagine of the grandeur of the Chanderi region in the past from the eloquent stories told by the silent stones of the past.

The Great Southern Highway – Dakshinapatha

The rich heritage of ancient India that stretched from North to South and East to West was connected by two great trade routes called Dakshinapatha and Uttarapatha. These routes which followed the course some of the great rivers of India served as the vibrant lifelines that helped in the travel of not only goods and commerce, but also ideas, culture, religion, art, architecture, and much more. The Dakshinapatha was a route that started from Magadha in present-day Bihar to Pratishthana in Aurangabad district. The route provided a gateway from the north to the Deccan. Chanderi situated strategically near this trade route thrived and prospered throughout the passage of history.

Chanderi’s More Recent History

Places To Visit In Chanderi - Chanderi Museum

Artifacts have been found near Chanderi which trace its history to the Gupta Period. After that, the region thrived under the rule of the Gujjar-Pratihara dynasty who ruled over Central India from the 8th Century to the 11th century. They were connoisseurs and patrons of art and architecture and the wonderful temple architecture of Central India in places like Khajuraho and Bateshwar bloomed during their period. It is interesting to note that though the power of the Gujjar-Pratihara dynasty declined elsewhere, an offshoot of the dynasty continued to rule over Chanderi till almost the middle of the 13th Century. Many of the ruins of the temples found in Chanderi and the sculptures that are now housed in the Chanderi Archaeological Museum are from this period.

In the mid of the 13th century, Chanderi came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate. The region was captured by Ghiyasuddin Balban on behalf of Sultan Nasiruddin who was the eighth Sultan of the Slave Dynasty (Mamluk Dynasty) to sit on the throne of the Delhi Sultanate. Chanderi was under the Delhi Sultanate for quite some time. It was only in the 16th century that the Rajput King of Mewar, Rana Sanga, captured Chanderi and installed Medini Rai as its ruler. Medini Rai had been a trusted loyalist of the Malwa Sultan and had been instrumental in helping him consolidate his hold over the region of Malwa. However, he fell out with the Sultan and became a trusted lieutenant of Rana Sanga and continued to be a thorn in the flesh of the Delhi Sultanate till his defiant death in what is known as the,  “Battle of Chanderi”. Medini Rai’s last battle was with the army of the Moghul Emperor Babur who invaded Chanderi. Though he had been given an option to surrender and give up Chanderi in exchange for Shamshabad, the brave Medini Rai chose to fight till his last breath and etched his name as a braveheart in the history of Chanderi.

Chanderi finds mention even in the autobiography of Akbar, Ain-e-Akbari, where he describes it as a town with 14,000 stone houses, a staggering 384 bazaars, around 12,000 odd mosques and more than 360 vast resting places for caravans.

Ibn Batuta visited Chanderi towards the middle of the 14th century on his way to Malabar. He describes Chanderi as a bustling commercial town full of bazaars, full of people trading in various goods.

In the middle of the 16th Century the Bundelas took over Chanderi and ruled over it till the beginning of the 19th century when it came under the Sindhias of Gwalior and remained with them till India’s independence, except for a short period in between

Indeed Chanderi is a place waiting to be discovered with the canvas of its history stretching way back in time. With 13 sites discovered in and around Chanderi, and many more being discovered regularly, an unofficial count of around 43 different sites, the region’s history, definitely deserves being labelled as a World Heritage City.

Chanderi Museum – A Window To Chanderi’s Glorious Past

Places To Visit In Chanderi - Chanderi Museum

Museums are always fascinating and the Archaeological Museum in Chanderi is no exception. It was appropriate that we started our exploration of Chanderi from the museum as it provided a deep and insightful perspective of the region and its history. The museum is very well maintained with spacious galleries. In fact, we were reminded of the National Museum in Phnom Penh , Cambodia ,  while visiting the Chanderi Museum .

Muzaffar Ansari - Kalleybhai

We were met by Kalleybhai at the entrance of the Museum and he took us around the museum, giving us a snapshot of Chanderi’s history across the centuries. The Museum is set in the midst of beautifully landscaped gardens and is a visual treat. Right at the entrance to the museum we were intrigued by a strange-looking and huge image that looked down upon us, it looked like the image of the Hindu God Shiva, but was different and awe-inspiring and at the same time fearful.

“This is a replica of the original 7-feet statue that was found in a village called Tala in the Bilaspur district of Chattisgarh,” explained the archaeology expert Padmashri K.K.Muhammed who was traveling with us. The statue which is now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India dates back to the Gupta Period, between the 4th and 5th Century AD. In fact, the original sculpture fascinated him so much that he had a replica made, and it was that replica that now stands at the entrance to the Chanderi Museum.

The statue of Shiva in Chanderi Museum

The statue of Shiva is unique and something that we have never seen in any temple, anywhere in the world. The statue is made up of different creatures from head to toe. It is believed to symbolize the Pashupatinath form of Rudra. The incredible statue of Shiva silently conveyed the message of the omnipresence and omnipotence of Shiva as the lord of the Universe.

On the head of Shiva is a coiled snake while two peacocks who are traditional enemies of snakes adorn his shoulders. They are in harmony when one with Shiva. The eyes are those of a crocodile while the two hands also emerge from the jaws of a crocodile. The crocodile symbolizes Ganga who is always closely associated with Shiva. The nose is made up of a lizard. Two fishes make up the moustache while the chin consists of a crab. The genitals of the naked statue are represented by a moving tortoise. Apart from different animals and birds, there are 9 faces on the statue of Shiva that can be interpreted as the 9 planets, signifying that not only is Shiva the lord of all living beings ( Pashupatinath ), but the entire universe is comprised in his being.

Chanderi Museum

Awed by this riveting form of Shiva, we followed Kalleybhai inside the museum and he took us on the journey right up till the beginning of human existence in the region of Chanderi. The museum itself is filled with sculptures and other artifacts discovered in the surrounding area, most of them dating back to around the 8th and 9th centuries AD, though some date back to much beyond that period. Most of the sculptures are from the ruins of the Jain and Hindu temples of the region. The museum is organized in four galleries. A gallery each is dedicated to Jainism, Vaishnavism, and Shaivism, while there is another common gallery dedicated that showcases the history of Chanderi.

As we moved spellbound in the galleries, exquisite sculptures of Hindu Gods and Jain Tirthankaras stared at us silently, the remains of a glorious era of Indian history.

Varaha sculpture in Chanderi Museum

An intriguing Varaha sculpture stands in the centre of a gallery riveting your attention. It is a different interpretation of Vishnu’s Varaha avatar from the one found in Udayagiri. Here, Vishnu is seen completely in the form of a Boar. What makes this sculpture unique are the minute carvings that grace the entire body of the Boar. The entire cosmic universe seems to be represented on the body of the Boar, one can find different Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu pantheon, the planets, saints, celestial beings, etc.. The sculpture of the Varaha was discovered in a site called Toban near Chanderi and dates back to the 9th Century AD.

Chanderi Museum

Sculptures in sandstone of Shiva, Vishnu, Parvati, and other Hindu Gods greet you at every corner of the museum. Jain Tirthankaras look benignly from their pedestals, while ancient coins grab your attention. Many of the collections have been donated to the museum by Kalleybhai’s family collection. Make sure you include the Chanderi museum at the top of your list of places to visit in Chanderi.

Chanderi Fort – Chanderi Ka Kila or Kirti Durg

Places To Visit In Chanderi

Atop a hill overlooking the town of Chanderi stands the Chanderi Fort. This Chanderi monument beckons visitors with its imposing facade and makes it one of the top 10 best places to visit in Chanderi. The fort hides within its fold many interesting monuments that tell stories of valour, desperation, and tragedy associated with the fort. Standing on the border between Bundelkhand and Malwa, the Chanderi fort was of strategic importance as it was the gateway to the Deccan. The fort is one of the most important places to visit in Chanderi.

The fort has a 5- kilometer wall running around it and is nestled at a height of about 71 meters above the town of Chanderi. It was built during the 11th century by the Pratihara king Kirti Pal and hence the fort is also known as Kirti Durg. The fort has been rebuilt and renovated a number of times by different kings who held sway in the region. Within the ramparts of the fort can be found, a palace as well as a mosque. The main gate of the fort is known as Khooni Darwaza, a grim reminder of the tragic battle that Medini Rai and his soldiers fought with Babar’s army.

Johar Smarak

Johar Smarak

A simple memorial stands inconspicuously in a corner by the side of the fort. A few women dressed in colourful attire stand near the canopy which protects the memorial stone that has scenes from the battle of Chanderi carved on it along with a scene that depicts the Jauhar as well as one of the ceremonial Shiv Puja. The wind blows across the monument as we listen to the poignant story associated with the monument. Just beyond the monument is a gorge and this is where thousands of women jumped into the fire, fearing the impending invasion of Babur’s army which was at the doors of the fort. Babur himself was astounded at what the women and men had done and he has expressed himself about this in his autobiography, Babur Nama.

One of The Lesser-Known Place To Visit In Chanderi – Baiju Bawra Memorial

Baiju Bawra

A tomb surrounded by sepulchral silence stands a little distance away from the Johar Smarak. A single stone marks the tomb as that of the musical legend of India, Baiju Bawra, who was a contemporary of Tansen. Legend has it that he was first associated with the royal court of Chanderi and later moved to the court of Raja Man Singh Tomar of Gwalior. It is believed that he could light lamps, melt stones, bring rain, as well as make flowers boom with the power of his singing. It is believed that he died in Chanderi in the year 1610 after battling typhoid. Today the man who is believed to have melted stones with his singing, himself lies in an obscure corner beneath a stone, unsung.

Cactus plant with names

Near the tomb of Baiju Bawra are many cactus plants, and on each of the leaves can be seen scratched the names of couples. It is believed that if couples scratch their names on these leaves, their love shall blossom.

Badal Mahal Chanderi

Badal Mahal Chanderi

Beautifully landscaped gardens. Immaculately maintained walkways. An imposing structure that rises to the skies but is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. This is what awaits you as you step into the Badal Mahal. The structure known as Badal Mahal gate stands as a symbol of Chanderi and is one of the iconic landmarks of the town.

Inside Badal Mahal Chanderi

Ironically Badal Mahal is neither a palace nor a gate. The structure that is referred to as Badal Mahal Gate or Badal Mahal Darwaza does not lead to anywhere. The structure rose in the 15th century and was constructed by the Sultan Mahmud Shah Khilji. The structure rises to about 100 feet from the ground. Two minarets stand on either side of exquisitely carved arches with intricate lattices and religious motifs.

Badal Mahal

The gate also represents the secular character of the Chanderi region as it has religious symbology from Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. The Badal Mahal is believed to have been a venue for the reception of royal visitors. These would be ceremonially received here before being escorted to the palace. The Badal Mahal must figure in your list of places to visit in Chanderi.

Jama Masjid

Places To Visit In Chanderi

Just opposite the Badal Mahal is a very old mosque that presents an almost surreal picture. This is the Jama Masjid that dates back to the 15th Century. The mosque is a beautiful example of the fusion of Islamic and Malwa architecture.

Chanderi Jama Masjid

The grand domes are topped with traditional Padmakosa (Lotus), Kalasa (Pitcher), and Amalaka. A vast courtyard is in the centre of the Masjid. The quibla wall has been divided into beautiful and ornamented Mihrabs.

Kati Ghati or Kati Darwaza

Places To Visit In Chanderi

A girl sits on a lone bench beside a massive gate that seems to have been cut into the rock. A bus moves through the gate and stops near the girl who boards it and the bus moves away. Does that sound familiar? It should ring a bell if you have seen the hit Bollywood movie by the name, “Stree”.

Kati Ghati

The bench was in front of us and saw was the massive gate. What was missing was the presence of Shraddha Kapoor. We were at Kati Ghati, one of the landmarks of Chanderi and the locale for the last scenes of the movie Stree.

Kati Ghati

Kati Ghati as the name implies is a gate that was not constructed, but rather a passage cut into sheer rock. The gate was excavated under the orders of Jiman Khan in the year 1490 under the reign of Ghiyasuddin Shah. The dimensions of Kat Ghati are a height of 80 feet, length of 192 feet and width of 39 feet.

There are many stories and myths associated with the gate which render it with a mysterious aura and these stories lead up, right to the construction of the gate.

Legend has it that Jiman Khan who was the administrator of Chanderi under the reign of Ghiyasuddin Shah wanted to impress the Sultan who was arriving there. So he thought of having the gate built. But the task was easier said than done. Sheer rock had to be sliced to form the gate. No one came forward to take up the humungous task till a person came forward and agreed to get the work done subject to certain conditions. He wanted complete independence and absence of any sort of supervision when the work was being done, and that he would name his fees after the work was completed. He boasted that he would give a surprise once the gate was complete.

Kati Ghati

Soon it was time for Jiman Khan to glimpse the finished work. He was amazed at what he saw, the massive rock seemed to have dissolved and in its place stood a broad passage through the rock. He was pleased and thought that this would surely humour the Sultan Ghiyasuddin Shah. But before he gave full vent to his joy, he noticed an anomaly, the gate was devoid of hinges, which meant that no door could be fixed on it, leaving the passage wide open to intruding enemies! Realizing his blunder the man who along with his retinue of labourers had cut through solid rock, took leave of Jiman Khan, never to be seen again. It was said that he committed suicide immediately after that.

Places To Visit In Chanderi - The tomb at Kati Ghati

The tomb of the man who was responsible for the massive task of cutting rock and building the Kati Ghati lies just outside it. Local folklore, contributes to the Chanderi horror story which goes that the place is even today haunted by the spirit of its architect who becomes a door and stands in the passage at night, not allowing anyone to pass through.

It is likely that an observation room was built on top of the gate where sentries would be posted to keep watch over the passage in lieu of a door. Rock cut steps that lead to the top of the gate point towards this fact.

Places To Visit In Chanderi - Kati Ghati

An inscription near the gate gives information about the construction of the gate. What is interesting is the fact that this is in four languages, local Bundeli, Sanskrit, Arabian, and Persian. Another interesting aspect of the inscription is the mention of the Hindu God Ganesh.

A few scenes of the Bollywood movie – Stree was shot in Kati Ghati.

Chanderi Silks –  Handloom Park

Places To Visit In Chanderi

Chanderi is of course, synonymous with its silk weaves. The art of weaving exquisite designs especially with gold dates back to the 13th century. In the initial years,  the exquisite weaves were for the adornment of the royal families, however, with the passage of time and innovation, things have changed a lot. Though almost every home in Chanderi has a loom or two, the Government has now set up a Handloom Park, where weavers are provided assistance in the form of procurement of raw materials, working capital, infrastructure etc.

Places To Visit In Chanderi - Chanderi weaving of saree

We visited a couple of handloom units in the Handloom park and had an opportunity to observe the making of the Chanderi Saree. Chanderi Handloom Park is definitely one of the interesting places to visit in Chanderi for an understanding of its rich tradition of weaving.

Chanderi looks exquisite indeed. The statue of Shiva in the entrance of the museum is making me curious. Of course, the weaves have my heart.

Amazing place for family picnic. Good historical reference. Very clean and well reconstructed monuments. Calm place to watch sunrise and sunset. Great thoughts.

That’s very deep dive in the history behind chanderi handloom and it’s charismatic city with such a beautiful architectural heritage

My mom loves silk sarees from Chanderi… They are so gorgeous… Loved reading about the beautiful place! Nice post!

This is a well detailed article on chanderi, I didn’t know a lot about it. And the explanation of the statue of shiva is done so well here.

Chanderi – a place of historic grandeur and art

Madhya Pradesh

Chanderi Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Last Updated on: May 20, 2021

When we visited Chanderi , little did we know that this place is going to leave such a striking impression on me. I have always loved ruins and old buildings. And we also love the stories of places and more so, the stories of faces. Chanderi provided all of these. A small historical town located in Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh , Chanderi is full of surprises.

What is so special about Chanderi?

Chanderi is beautiful. Every nook and corner of the town has some stories. From the tales of the past to the recent accounts of the film shootings of spooky Stree and Sui Dhaga, a visit to Chanderi was quite enriching. So what is Chanderi known for?

Chanderi is known for its famous handloom sarees – Chanderi Sarees.

After having seen the dokra , mukha and masks of Majuli , we were intrigued to know about the hardships behind the making of these sheer fabrics. Chanderi is also full of historic monuments that fed my love for heritage.

We were humbled to see the Samadhi of Baiju Bawra. The Dhrupad Maestro has been quite overlooked in history. But Dhrupads composed by him are still sung by most Dhrupad singers. And then there are the Chanderi Fort, palaces and numerous old buildings. Chanderi is of interest to history lovers, musicians as well as those looking for an offbeat holiday.

Legends, folklores and History of Chanderi

A place becomes more lively when you know about the stories behind them. And in India, there is no dearth of legends and folklore. And history too is an account of the times, the stories told by a few people who have seen and experienced the place. Chanderi too has a lot of stories in its cobbled streets and within its fortified walls.

The earliest legends relate Chanderi to the times of Mahabharata. It is said that Chanderi was established by Lord Krishna’s cousin King Sishupal of Chedi. The most famous legend, however, is that of King Kirtipal of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty who had shifted his capital from Boodhi Chanderi (old Chanderi) to the present town of Chanderi in 11th Century AD. The archaeological remains in Chanderi bear testimony of illustrious past that might have witnessed rise and fall of dynasties. But much of the history of the place is lost in the realms of time as there are very less written evidence about Chanderi and its past. Nevertheless, Chanderi finds mention in the writings of Al Beruni (973-1048AD) and Ibn Battuta (1304-1369 AD). Chanderi also finds a mention in Ain-e-Akbari, the autobiography of Emperor Akbar.

According to Ain-i-Akbari, Chanderi had 14,000 stone houses and 384 markets, 360 spacious caravan-sarais (resting places) and 12,000 mosques!

Later Chanderi was ruled over by Delhi Sultanate, Rajputs and the Bundela kings. Finally on December 12, 1860, following a treaty signed between the British and the Scindias, Chanderi was returned to the Gwalior estates. After the Indian independence, Chanderi became a part of Madhya Bharat that was later named Madhya Pradesh.

Sunset at Chanderi Fort, Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Hazrat Wajihuddin, one of the disciples of Shaikh Nizamuddin Auliya has settled at Chanderi in 1305 AD. And he attracted thousands of visitors to Chanderi, even from as far as Bengal. It is believed that the practice of weaving in Chanderi had begun from the weavers from Bengal (from regions around Dhaka) who had settled at Chanderi. Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) was a major centre of weaving at that time.

Chanderi and Baiju Bawra

Any classical music aficionado must definitely have heard of Baiju Bawra. What we know about the Dhrupad maestro is mostly from the 1952 Bollywood movie that focuses mainly on his rivalry with musical maestro Tansen. He was the disciple of Swami Haridas along with Tansen. We all know about Tansen, but Baiju Bawra chose a life of oblivion singing only for himself. Some even believe him to be a better musician than Miyan Tansen.

Chanderi is the birthplace of the Dhrupad Maestro Baiju Bawra.

The ‘bawra’ (crazy) musician Baiju Nayak composed Dhrupads that are even sung today by most Dhrupad singers. Not much is known about the life of Baiju or Baijnath Mishra, as he was called. But he was a great musician and was called “bawra” because of his temperament of a fakir in search of music. Baiju was associated with the Gwalior court as a Dhrupad singer. Gwalior is considered one of the oldest gharanas of Hindustani music , but Chanderi does not feature when the major Dhrupad traditions are mentioned. It seems that the Chanderi has been omitted out of the scenario of Indian Classical Music.

Baiju Bawra Samadhi, Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh

Baiju Nayak breathed his last on the day of Basant Panchami in 1610. There is a Samadhi of Baiju Bawra near the Chanderi Fort. Several people visit Chanderi on this day in remembrance of the musician. Chanderi has now decided to bring the legendary musician to the forefront. The Achaleshwar Mahadev Mandir Foundation (SAMMF) took a welcome initiative to start an annual Dhrupad festival at Chanderi at the Raja Rani Mahal in Chanderi as a tribute to the almost forgotten musician.

Where is Chanderi?

Chanderi is a small town located on the southwestern side of the Betwa River on the edge of the Malwa Plateau in the heart of Madhya Pradesh. Located strategically on the borders of Malwa and Bundelkhand , Chanderi fell on the major trade route of Central India and on the route to Malwa. Because of its strategic position and abundance of natural resources, Chanderi has always been on the eyesight of the rulers starting from Pratihars to Khilji, Lodhi, Mughals, Bundelas and finally the British.

Things to see in Chanderi

Each of the buildings and alleys of Chanderi seems to tell stories of the past. And its people will tell you the tales of today. With such history behind it, Chanderi is a blend of history and nature and has a lot to offer to its visitors. Chanderi comprises of the inner town and the outer town. You will find forts, palaces, mosques, temples, lakes and mausoleums in the small area of the inner town. While in Chanderi, do not miss these places.

Chanderi Fort or Kirti Durg

The most impressive one is the huge Chanderi Fort standing on the highest point of the Chandragiri Hills. The Kirti Durg was constructed by Pratihara king Kirti Pal and is named after him. The fort has been rebuilt several times by subsequent rulers of Chanderi. The huge fort has several interesting monuments inside. On the end of the fort is the Khilji mosque whose arches and pillars have graceful floral carvings and verses from the Holy Quran. The other places of interest are Hawa Paur , Naukhanda Palace and the tomb of Hazrat Abdul Rahman Narnuli . But the best point according to me is the Baradari which is a vantage point giving a commanding view of the entire town as well as the ruins of Kati Ghati Gateway and Kirat Sagar. There are three ways to approach the fort, one of which is named as Khooni Darwaza. Local tradition mentions that prisoners were thrown down this gate during the rule of the Sultan of Malwa and their battered corpse was displayed at the gate, therefore, it came to be named as Khuni Darwaza , or the Blood-soaked Gate .

Jauhar Kund

There is a Jauhar Smarak situated just outside the fort complex. It is said that many Rajput women committed Jauhar (an act of self-immolation) just after Medini Rai and his soldiers left the fort to fight the last and final battle with the forces of Babur. The battle was fought on 29th January 1528.

Jauhar Kund Chanderi Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Koshak Mahal

Koshak Mahal is another impressive structure located about 4 km from Chanderi town on Isagarh Road. It was built in 1445 as a victory monument by the Sultan of Malwa, Mehmood Shah Khilji, to commemorate his victory over Sultan Mehmood Sharki in the battle at Kalpi.

It was originally called the “ Kushk-e-Haft Manzil ” or the “ edifice with seven storeys ”. The Mahal was perhaps planned as a seven-storeyed building, but now only 3 storeys can be seen. There is a legend that says that the Sultan had ordered to build the monument in order to provide employment to the people of his kingdom, as Chanderi was facing severe unemployment at that time. Imagine building such a monument to provide employment! He must have been a good ruler.

Koshak Mahal Chanderi Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Shehzadi ka Roza

Shehzadi ka Roza stands as a metaphor for unfulfilled love. It is actually a tomb built in 15 th century by the Governor of Chanderi, Hakim in memory of his daughter Mehrunnisa . It is said that Mehrunnisa fell in love with the army chief. But Hakim was against the alliance. When the army went to war, Hakim asked a few soldiers to make sure that the chief does not return from the battlefield alive. The commander, however, survived, though injured. He managed to escape from the battlefield and ride towards Chanderi. But he fell from his horse and died at the very place where the monument is now built. When Mehrunnisa found out, he rushed to meet her lover, but on finding him dead, she ended her life as well. Hakim buried the star-crossed lovers together and built the memorial. He also dug a pond around so that no one can reach the tomb. The pond does not exist today, but Shehzadi ka Roza stands as a striking monument in the middle of green fields.

Shahzadi ka Roza, Chanderi Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Badal Mahal Gate

This is a beautiful structure situated in the inner town of Chanderi. The Badal Mahal Darwaza was built in the 15 th century during the reign of Sultan Mahmood Shah Khilji I. In all probability, the gate stood as the doorway to a palace that no longer exists. The beautiful gate with minarets and beautiful patterns must have seen the entourage of kings and their men. At present, a well-manicured garden surrounds the Badal Mahal gate. There is a Bawdi inside the garden as well.

The Badal Mahal Gate is quite iconic as it forms the part of the stamp which Madhya Pradesh Handloom Department puts on the hand-woven sarees which Chanderi is famous for. This gate is also seen in postage seals for the letters posted from Chanderi.

Jama Masjid

The Jama Masjid was built when Chanderi came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate under Ghiasuddin Balban. This is the oldest and the largest mosque in Chanderi where almost 2000 persons can offer their prayers. The entrance gate to the mosque is beautifully carved with ornate designs. But this gateway is not the original part of the mosque but has been brought from the ruined fort of Tamarpura.

Jama Masjid, Chanderi Madhya Pradesh Tourism

If you are on the north of this gate, then you are at Bundelkhand . And if you are on the south, you are at Malwa . The Kati Ghati Gateway carved out of an entire rock form the link between Malwa and Bundelkhand. The Gate is 80 feet high and its construction was commissioned in 1495 AD by Jiman Khan, the son of the then Governor of Chanderi, Sher Khan.

There is an interesting legend associated with the Gateway. It is said that the gateway was to be built to welcome the Sultan of Malwa who arrived on the next day. Jiman Khan was searching for someone who could build the gate in one day. Only one accepted the challenge. The next morning, Jiman Khan was pleased to find the gateway cut out of the rock. But he also found out that the gate lacked the provision for door hinges. Since it was at such an important position, a door was required for security purpose. Jiman Khan refused to pay the mason his wage for making this mistake and sent him away empty-handed. The mason was so dejected that he committed suicide. The Gateway still stands without a gate.

Raja Rani Mahal

The Raja Rani Mahal is situated in the inner town comprises two different palaces. The two palaces built in different styles and are perhaps built on different periods, probably in the 15th century. The structures are imposing and show the grandeur of Chanderi during those times.

Ramnagar Palace

The Ramnagar Palace was initially built as a hunting lodge by Maharaja Durjan Singh Bundela in AD 1698. The Palace is surrounded by greenery and there is a beautiful lake named Mehjatiya Pool on the other side. Currently, the Ramnagar Palace is maintained by the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Archives, Madhya Pradesh . You will find various artefacts from Hindu temples, idols and deities on display here. The lake is really beautiful and perfect place to take some beautiful clicks.

Jageshwari Temple

The temple is located on a hillside and can be approached by a flight of stairs. It is said that the temple is related to famous lore of the foundation of modern Chanderi. It is believed that Pratihara king Kirtipal had witnessed the “Miracle of Water” here. This temple is also considered among fifty-two Shaktipeeth and it is here where the mastak (head) of the goddess, Sati, believed to have fallen.

Parameshwar Taal and Lakshman Mandir

Parameshwar Taal was built by the Bundela Rajput Kings. The pond is now surrounded by temples and various cenotaphs. The Lakshman Mandir is also situated near the pond and is believed to be built by the Bundela King Anirudh Singh. The main shrine has an idol of Lakhsman and Sheshnag inside On the way to the Parameshwar Taal, you will also find the Royal Horses’ Memorial (two stone plaques dedicated to the favourite horses of the Bundela Kings), Maharaja Anirudh Singh’s Chhatri , Maharaja Bharat Shah Chhatri and Maharaja Devi Singh Bundela Chhatri .

Khandagiri Temple

This is a famous Jain pilgrimage site located on the Ramnagar Road. The first thing that you will notice here is the 45 feet giant statue of the first Jain Tirthankara Rishabhnath, also known as Adinath carved out on the surface of the hillock. There are a few caves that have the statues of Jain Tirthankars inside. While you are here, please beware of monkeys.

Chanderi Museum

The Chanderi Museum was inaugurated in September 2008 and is maintained by ASI. The Museum has five galleries spread across two floors. The first gallery is named History of Chanderi and has a display of photographs of the rock paintings found at Nanuan and other cave shelters along with sculptures and tools of the early men. Other galleries have statues of Jain Tirthankaras and various stone statues.

Things to do in Chanderi

The forts and cenotaphs and mausoleums will provide perfect fodder for heritage and history lovers. But Chanderi is much more than that. While at Chanderi, how can you miss visiting the Bunkaar colony where the Chanderi sarees are weaved? Or not enjoy the delicious cuisine? What about walking along the streets and alleys and find out more about the shooting locations of the Bollywood movies? Also, enjoy the natural beauty of Chanderi.

Visit the Bunkaar Quarters

Chanderi is famous for the magnificent silken fabrics produced in the town. Since time immemorial, the weavers or Bunkaars of Chanderi has been weaving the nine yards wonder. The Chanderi Sarees are known for their unique texture, sheen, and semi-transparent qualities. The sarees are hand woven cotton, silk or silk mixed with cotton variety. You can visit the quarters of the weavers to witness how these sarees are made. Not only weaving, but you will also see the traditional architecture of the houses and the way of life of the weavers here. And what more, you can also buy Chanderi sarees and dress materials here as you listen to the stories of the Bunkaars.

Walk along the roads of Chanderi

We always believe that the best way to know a place is to walk around. Walking around the streets of Chanderi can be a great activity. Out of nowhere, you might see an old imposing structure. The small town is typical with alleyways and boulevards. And there might be a surprise at corners. As we walked along the narrow cobbled roads, we found a ruined or old building lurking at a corner. It was a different experience altogether. And also do not forget to explore the market place. Visit the Sadar Bazar, Chanderi’s main shopping area. The main entrance of the market is through the Delhi Darwaza, one of the main gateways in Chanderi’s fortification.

Enjoy the cuisine

We always love to taste the local cuisines of a place. In Madhya Pradesh, you must get a taste of the Poha and Jalebis. While we relished on the jalebis, we also had Dak Tikka and Churma Laddoo . These specialities of the town are sure to please your taste buds.

Madhya Pradesh Cuisine, Chander

Enjoy the traditional music and Raai dance of Bundelkhand

You can listen to the traditional Bundelkhand music at Chanderi as well as enjoy the Raai Dance. Raai is a folk dance of the Bundelkhand region. Raai literally means mustard seeds. Just as mustard seeds swing around when thrown in a saucer, the Raai dancers swing to the lyrics of the songs and dances following the beats. The dance is quite interesting and is actually a duet between the drummer and the dancer. The dancer and the drummer both try to outdo each other using their dancing steps and beat of the drum.

Take a day trip to Bharka Waterfall and Nanaun Rock Painting

The rock paintings near the Nanaun village shows the earliest imprints of human existence in the region. The rock paintings are found in the caves and there is also a beautiful waterfall nearby named Bharka Waterfall.

There are direct State Transport as well as private bus services to Chanderi from Gwalior, Indore and Jhansi.

Places to stay at Chanderi

The best place to stay at Chanderi is the Kila Kothi situated just beside the Chanderi Fort. You will get a beautiful view of the town from Kila Kothi . Another place to stay is the Madhya Pradesh Tourism resort Taana Baana . There are a couple of budget hotels in the town as well.

A place also becomes more enjoyable because of the company you have. The trip to Chanderi was so enjoyable because of the great people we had on the trip. A special thanks to CMO, Chanderi Municipality who shared his knowledge with us, Kalley Bhai, our guide and Mr. Niraj Jain Vardhman for his help.

Chanderi: a hidden gem in Madhya Pradesh

A quick search on the Internet about offbeat places and less trodden paths will lead you to hundreds and thousands of results on this unknown gem of the Himalayas or that secret beach down south. But have you ever wondered what’s in the between these Himalayas and these beaches? A country as big and as culturally diverse as India, is sure to have a number of worthwhile offerings. All we really have to do is look! And so when I got the opportunity of visiting Chanderi, a small obscure town in the Ashoknagar district, to learn about the rich heritage, and the Madhya Pradesh art and culture , I (virtually) jumped to grab it! To give you an estimate of Chanderi’s richness and poignancy, for 3 days the kind people of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department took us in and around this historically significant town, and yet we were just able to cover about half of it!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Avantika | Travel Blogger ???????? (@waywardwayfarer_)

Grabbed your attention yet? Let me now jump into the know hows of things and try to give you a comprehensive guide of things to do in Chanderi.

How to reach Chanderi

The god-sent gift that the Indian Railways are, there is an eight hour long Shatabdi running from Delhi to Bhopal on a daily basis. Bhopal is the nearest Madhya Pradesh town to Chanderi. However, you can also get off at Lalitpur or Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh which are just 40 kilometers and 107 kilometers from Chanderi, respectively.

delhi to chanderi road trip

Madhya Pradesh public transportation to reach Chanderi is still a bit shoddy considering the fact that it is still a very small town with almost no tourist inflow. So you can take either a private cab, or hire a tempo traveller if you’re travelling in a large group, to reach this (majestic) small town.

The nearest airports are, of course, Bhopal (214 kilometers) and Indore (409 kilometers).

Where to stay in Chanderi

There are one or two hotels in Chanderi which offer a decent-ish lodging at reasonable prices, but if you have a few bucks to spare on you, I recommend making your way to Kila Kothi , the beautiful luxury hotel situated on a hillock overlooking the entire town! This hotel is an annex to the magnificent Chanderi Fort which is hardly a minute’s walk away from the hotel.

delhi to chanderi road trip

(Pssst. This is also the very hotel where cinestars like Anushka Shamra and Varun Dhawan stayed at, while shooting for the movie Sui Dhaga .)

The hotel is basically made out of a part of the part and they have kept intact most of it, giving it a very authentic royal touch. Even the interiors of every single room is to die for- so minimalist, yet aesthetically pleasing!

What to eat in Chanderi

One of the most famous meals of Madhya Pradesh are Dal Tikkad and Aaloo Pyaaz sabzi.  Dal Tikkad is yellow lentils served with a thick chapati made of gram flour, turmeric, ghee and some other magical ingredients. With this you get a mix vegetable dish of onions, potatoes and tomatoes. This meal is incomplete without their signature green chutney made of green chillies and tomatoes, and some churma laddoos for dessert! You can get this meal at any local dhaba or restaurant in Chanderi, or ask the kind souls at Kila Kothi to prepare it for you. And boy, will they prepare it with all the love they have!

Places to visit in Chanderi

Now, brace yourself because this is going to be a long, long list that probably only covers a little over half of what Chanderi tourist places have to offer. Our amazing guide, Mr. Muzaffar Ahmed Ansari, fondly known as “Kalley Bhai” is a MP Tourism approved guide and was a walking library on all things Madhya Pradesh. He has even made important contributions, including the manuscript of the Holy Quran, and some ages old copper and silver coins, to the Chanderi museum .

1. Chanderi Fort

This is a big fort located on the hillock overlooking the entire town, situated 71 meters above the rest of the town. The entrance to this fort is known as  khooni darwaza  or ‘bloody gateway’ owing to the large number of capital punishments that took place here, during the reign of the Mughals. The fort is adorned with spectacular lattice work and makes for a great place to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

2. Jauhar Monument

Another place of historical importance within the fort is the Jauhar Monument. A macabre Rajput tradition made famous by the (in)famous movie Padmavat, Jauhar was an age old ritual of mass suicide wherein women in large numbers would collectively walk into massive fire pits with their children in their arms. When the Mughal rulers had taken over Chanderi from its previous Rajput rulers, the women committed this act of defeat, choosing to kill themselves than to face dishonor in the hands of the enemy.

2. Kati Ghati

delhi to chanderi road trip

This is a gateway made by the Mughal empire cutting entirely through a living rock, separating the Bundelkhand and the Malwa regions.

3. Lakshman Mandir

delhi to chanderi road trip

Situated by the Parmeshwar Tal, this temple in Chanderi is one of the very few in the country dedicated solely to Lord Lakshmana. The Sheshanag is the main idol of this temple. An early morning walk would prove fruitful as one can have an insight into the early morning rituals of women feeding fish, and of men taking a dip in the holy lake.

4. Shehzadi ka Rauza

delhi to chanderi road trip

This monument is a heartbreaking testimony of true love. When an unknown princess fell in love the chief of her father’s army, an alliance which was frowned upon by the King. To put this relationship to an end, the king instructed two of the chief’s soldiers to kill him after the battle they were to fight soon. When the chief returned bloody and wounded, he died in the arms of the princess. Unable to bear this sorrow, she ended her life as well. This moved the King deeply and he decided to build a mausoleum in honour of their love. Quite a story, innit?!

5. Jama Masjid

delhi to chanderi road trip

The oldest and largest mosque of Chanderi, and possibly all of Bundelkhand, the Jama Masjid was built when Chanderi came under the control of the Delhi Sultanate. A quaint and quiet open space, this cool courtyard was like a breath of fresh relief in the scorching heat.

delhi to chanderi road trip

Pro Tip:  If you would want to witness the big weekly Jummah prayer, reach the Jama Masjid on a Friday at 1pm to be a part of the spectacle.

6. Koshak Mahal

This palace was probably my favourite of all the historical monuments we visited during our short trip, what once used to be a mighty seven storey tall structure, is now just a a simple yet imposing building. Two of these seven storeys still remain. Since this is part of Chanderi is relatively cut off from the main town, it was a quiet place with nobody here except for us, and I was able to enjoy a few moments of peace, immersing in this culturally rich fairyland that I had found myself in.

7. Ramnagar Palace and Museum

delhi to chanderi road trip

The road through Kati Ghati leads to this palace, which is actually not a a palace but was once a hunting lodge built by the then Maharaja. There is also an open museum here housing some Hindu idols and deities. What makes this place special is that it is located right beside an artificial lake called Mehjatiya Pool. This is also the very lake where Babur camped for a night before heading on to attack the Chanderi Fort.

8. Khandargiri Jain Temple

delhi to chanderi road trip

The cultural and religious diversity of this small town is really something to talk about. Not only are there Hindu temples and mosques here, but this is also a very important place for the history of Jainism.

delhi to chanderi road trip

A pilgrimage site for Jains, the most striking feature of this temple is the 45 feet tall statue of the first Jain Tirthankara Rishabhnath, also known as Adinath, carved onto the surface of the hillock. This temple is also home to two caves, both carved onto the hillock, which house significant inscribed statues of the Tirthankaras. According to these inscriptions, the oldest of these statues is over 700 years old.

9. Visit the weavers colony

If there’s anything that people know about Chanderi, it is its cotton and silk woven sarees famous all across the country. These sarees are woven in the homes of the weavers of Chanderi, who live collectively in the “bunkar” (weaver) colony.

Generations after generations are involved in this intricate art and craft of Madhya Pradesh. Even young children, help out their parents with the weaving work, after returning from school.

10. Witness the spectacular Rai Dance

delhi to chanderi road trip

The Rai Dance is a folk dance of Madhya Pradesh from the Baghelkhand region, performed during special occasions like a wedding or the birth of a child in the Vaishya community. Typically performed by women of the Ahir community, or by a man dressed as a woman in the traditional attire and ornaments, this dance is done with the accompaniment of the musical instruments dholak and nagara.

11. Chanderi Museum

delhi to chanderi road trip

This museum is the perfect show of Chanderi’s true spirit, under one roof. From archifacts like the manuscript of the Holy Quran, to Jain idols, and to Hindu Shaivya and Vishnu idols, this museum is home to all.

We love transparency!  This post is sponsored by Madhya Pradesh Tourism, but the views expressed are truly my own.

Chanderi: A Fusion of Heritage and Elegance

Chanderi: A Fusion of Heritage and Elegance

A quaint town in Madhya Pradesh, Chanderi has earned global fame for its beautiful textile - Chanderi sarees- known for their elegance and design. But there's more to this town that emanates an old-world charm, and you might have seen glimpses of it in movies like 'Stree' and 'Sui Dhaaga'.  Did you know the town also has a great historical significance, showcased through its various monuments? You can even visit Chanderi Festival, which will be hosted by Madhya Pradesh Tourism between September 21-26, 2023, to experience the rich heritage and culture of the place.

Let's know more about this destination.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

Historians argue that early traces of human civilisation in Chanderi date back to the Mesolithic period, as depicted in the cave paintings of a nearby rock site, Nanaun. More prominently, the stone inscriptions excavated in the region indicate that Kirti Pal of the Pratihara dynasty made it his capital in the 11th century.

The occasional mention of Chanderi in the Mahabharata further establishes the importance of the town. Legend goes that the picturesque city was built by King Sishupala, Lord Krishna's cousin, in the Vedic period. Moreover, it used to be a busy trade route in ancient times, as documented in famous travel chronicles like that of Ibn Battuta.

Over the centuries, Chanderi served as the seat of many important rulers--from the Kachhwahas to the Mamluks, from the Mughals to the Bundelas and the British, and then the Sindhias in 1861--with each of them leaving behind remnants of their heritage and culture, adding to the historical significance of this town and influencing its deep-rooted traditions. The magnificent architectural structures in this destination bear testimony to its rich and fascinating past.

Architectural Marvels

Here are some of the top heritage sites in Chanderi that you should not miss:

Chanderi Fort

The fort, home to kings from subsequent dynasties during different periods, shows how different cultures shaped its architecture. The fort has three important gates called Khooni Darwaza, Hawa Paur, and Kati-Ghati, which have fascinating historical anecdotes associated with them.

For instance, historians say that it is at Khooni Darwaza that the Malwa Sultans hung the bodies of enemies. On the other hand, Kati-Ghati, located on the south-western side of the fort, was built under the patronage of Jiman Khan, who wanted to impress his father and the then Sultan of Malwa, Ghiyasuddin Khilji. The legend goes that while building it, the architect realised he had committed an error in the construction. Locals believe he committed suicide and his spirit continues to haunt the gate even today.

Koshak Mahal

Located just a few kilometres away from the main town is Koshak Mahal, built by Sultan of Malwa, Mehmood Shah Khilji. This ancient multi-storeyed palace is known for its arched gateways and unique structure that distinguishes it from the other monuments in the town. It has four palaces of equal dimensions that are situated at equal distances from one another to ensure adequate ventilation and light on all four sides.

Badal Mahal

This beautiful sandstone gateway, with a height of about 50 ft, surrounded by high walls, was built to welcome kings and other important guests to Chanderi. While it is called 'Mahal', there are no palaces on either side of the gate!

Jama Masjid

This is the largest mosque in Chanderi, constructed under the Delhi Sultanate in the 15th century. The premises comprise a spacious open court with a sanctuary and arched cloisters on its north and south respectively. While the structure of the building is unique, the detailed carvings on its arches, door and windows speak of a refined artistic taste. Interestingly, the finial (decorative top) of the massive domes has elements of Kalasa and Padmakosa, which are typically seen in Hindu temple architecture.

Lakshman Temple

Located near Parmeshwar Tal (pond), this temple has the perfect setting and makes for a unique travel experience. Dedicated to the Hindu deity Lakshman, the temple is known to have been built by Bundela king Anirudh Singh in the 18th century.

Shehzadi ka Roza

You must visit this memorial dedicated to Princess Mehrunissa. The legend goes that her father did not approve of her falling in love with a commoner and ordered his assassination. Unable to accept this, the aggrieved princess ended her life. Her father built Shehzadi ka Roza in her memory in the 15th century and entombed her next to her deceased lover. It is a beautiful structure made entirely of grey sandstone and features designs inlaid with blue enamels.

Six-yard Elegance

A symbol of royalty, Chanderi sarees are not just a part of our heritage but also valued immensely in the world of contemporary fashion. This delicate and opulent handloom, which was first weaved by the Koshti community who migrated from Jhansi to Chanderi, flourished the most during the Mughal era. In the early 20th century, the then-declining art received its due recognition once again under the patronage of the Scindia royal family. An integral part of the rich legacy of Chanderi, what makes these elegant weaves eye-catching are their gorgeous motifs embroidered with golden or silver zari on a sheer, lightweight fabric made of silk or a cotton-silk combination.

Chanderi Festival

To celebrate the many unique features of Chanderi's rich heritage, Madhya Pradesh Tourism will be hosting 'Chanderi Festival 2023: Weaving Tales of Tradition' with much pomp and enthusiasm. The five-day festival, marked by various exciting events and activities, promises an enriching and memorable experience, as you explore the cultural elements that are synonymous with Chanderi.

About Chanderi In Madhya Pradesh

historic era

When we mention the term “Chanderi”, the majority of the people think about the fabric by the same name. While that is completely fine and justified, Chanderi is also a very popular but small town nestled just between Malwa and Bundelkhand in Madhya Pradesh. The place is located along the Betwa river, further, making it an amazing option to explore. So, if you have had the question of where is Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, we hope this answered it.

Chanderi was so centrally located during the historic era that it served as a trade route for Central India as well as the route to Malwa. The town was enriched with natural resources and was located in a very strategic position, making it an ideal trading hub back in the days. The place, because of its location, was also eyed by some of the major rules across India back in the days.

But What Makes Chanderi So Special?

amazing the place looks

Well, to be honest, it is just how amazing the place looks that make all the difference. It is beautiful from all ends, thus making it a spot that one possibly can’t even think of existing in India. The place has such a strong heritage that several films have also been shot here.

The wide range of historic monuments will further polish your knowledge about culture and heritage, making it quite the ride that you possibly didn’t even think of in the first place. If you wish to explore more into the depths of history and heritage, this is possibly the best spot to visit.

Weather In Chanderi

Chanderi does have pretty standard weather

Well, much like the rest of India, Chanderi does have pretty standard weather. The summers are hot and humid and can jump up to 30 to 45 degrees celsius while the winters are pretty chill and comfy with the temperatures skirting around 5 to 20 degrees celsius.

For the most part, it is best suggested that you do visit during the winter months because of how favourable the weather is. It is quite easier for you to walk around as well during the winter months without any issues, to be honest.

Calculate the distance

Before you plan a road trip, it is important to understand how to measure the distance between two points. Knowing the distances between different locations is essential for navigation and planning your journey.

Fortunately, there are several tools and techniques available to help you calculate distances quickly and accurately. These include using a map, GPS device or smartphone app, website calculators, paper maps, and measuring wheels among others.

Map: Using an ordinary paper map will give you an idea of the approximate distance between two points but must not be relied upon for exact measurements. You can use a ruler or string on the map’s scale to gauge the distance, then multiply this by the ratio given on the map’s legend to compare it with real-world coordinates.

GPS devices: With satellite-based technology now accessible in many consumer electronic devices, you can get exact points of measurement incredibly quickly when travelling through unknown areas. Such tools enable users to pinpoint exact spots and travel routes with considerable accuracy while estimating factors such as time allowances for different roads etc.

Phone apps: There are also phone applications that work based on geographic information systems (GIS) data of roads and other infrastructure that measure distances more accurately than digital maps alone can manage. With these phone apps, users can get audio signals when entering unknown areas or filter options to view any type or minimum length of road segment (bypasses for example). Many phone apps also store past destinations so that users do not need to input them again when retracing certain trips or visiting old friends.

Website calculators: For those who prefer simpler methods or lack access to sophisticated equipment such as a GPS device, there are many free site calculators available online where you can input two sets of coordinates including zip codes/addresses/cities/states then receive a direct measurement between them in either driving miles (which may also come with estimates for various types of vehicles) or route miles (which factors in off-road sections).

Follow safety guidelines

It’s important to follow safety guidelines when engaging in any activity that carries a risk. Safety items should be the top priority when considering security measures since they help prevent physical harm and reduce liability risks.

Whether you are in a work or home environment, safety should be foremost in your mind. Employers have a responsibility to keep their staff safe, and as an employee, you bear responsibility for performing safe work practices. Everyone should know what potential hazards may exist and how to respond if a problem arises. Knowing emergency procedures can help protect yourself, your co-workers, family members and friends from harm.

Safety steps that can be taken include: -Investing time to create clear safety protocols for everyone -Providing training on specific tasks related to security -Regularly maintaining all equipment used for security -Adhering to laws and regulations concerning the use of security devices -Incorporating technology that monitors areas even when people are not present -Properly disposing of hazardous materials securely -Creating quick access points so help can easily be contacted if needed -Conducting regular fire drills so employees are prepared if smoke or flames appear -Ensuring there is always an adequate supply of first aid materials onsite

Taking these steps will ensure that all areas are as secure as possible while keeping employees safe at the same time. All personnel should be educated on these protocols and take them seriously; any disregard or misuse of these guidelines could lead to serious injury or worse. Everyone must understand basic safety measures concerning the handling of any weapons or other necessary tools utilized in any particular profession requiring greater security measures.

Research local laws and regulations

Conducting thorough research into local and state laws and regulations before beginning a new safety and security project is essential for success. It is important to stay informed on any recent changes to the relevant laws, to ensure you are in compliance with them. Additionally, local building codes must be taken into consideration when constructing or developing a secure area.

Educate yourself about all applicable laws and regulations regarding safety and security to avoid any potential violations. Make sure to check with relevant government agencies in order to find out what you need to do legally in order to set up a safe space. Travel in groups

Road trip

When traveling, it is always best to travel in groups. When traveling by car, consider having at least two people in the vehicle and make sure all doors are locked while driving. This not only allows people to keep an eye out for potential dangers, but it also strengthens security as there are many eyes and ears paying attention. Additionally, having multiple people can help with navigation; the driver of the car can more easily focus on the road if another person is assisting with navigation.

If taking a longer journey, it is important to switch drivers frequently in order to reduce fatigue. Take regular breaks from driving and plan your trip ahead of time so that you know where you will be stopping each night. Whenever possible, stop overnight at a hotel or safe area rather than camping outdoors; if camping outdoors is unavoidable, then choose a well-lit area near other people and set up camp well before dark.

Above all else, trust your gut when making decisions about safety and security during your trip! Make smart choices to maintain a heightened level of security while turning your Delhi- Chandigarh road trip into an unforgettable experience.
