Across the band’s six gigs at Wembley Stadium, they were joined by a bounty of special guests. On August 17, the band enlisted Shaznay Lewis to cover two  All Saints songs, while the previous night saw them joined  by  Natalie Imbruglia , who paid tribute to the late  Olivia Newton-John  by covering ‘Summer Nights’ with the band. They also performed Imbruglia’s 1997 hit ‘Torn’.

Meanwhile, Coldplay also welcomed Craig David , who performed his songs ‘Live In The Moment’, ‘Fill Me In’ and ‘7 Days’ at each of the first two Wembley Stadium shows. Other guests included pianist Victoria Canal and Steve Coogan in character as Alan Partridge , who covered  ABBA ’s 1976 hit ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’ and  Kate Bush ’s  newly-made-cool-again ‘Running Up That Hill’ alongside Jacob Collier .

During the North American leg of their tour in April, Coldplay also brought out  Bruce Springsteen ,  Kylie Minogue  and  Kelly Rowland , who each performed on-stage covers of their songs  ‘Working on a Dream’ ,  ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’  and  ‘Independent Women Part I’  respectively.

Reviewing one of the Wembley gigs , NME said: “It’s a joyful spectacle; a masterclass in how a massive pop show can be done. The band seem genuinely thrilled at the reaction, too. “Thank you for coming. These days, it’s so difficult to get to see a show,” Chris notes appreciatively at one point. “Thank you for coming and restoring our faith in humanity; for being peaceful and singing together.” The roars in response indicate that the feeling is mutual.”

Coldplay Announce 2023 Tour Dates

By Matthew Strauss

Coldplay

Coldplay have announced 2023 dates on their world tour in support of Music of the Spheres . Next year, the band will perform in Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Find Coldplay’s schedule and a trailer for the tour below.

Coldplay famously declined to tour in support of Everyday Life for environmental reasons. The band has set out to make the Music of the Spheres World Tour more sustainable, with a press releasing touting concerts powered entirely by renewable energy. For example, there have been solar panels and wind turbines at every venue to help power the shows.

Recent tour reviews

I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.

The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.

Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."

Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"

Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.

The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.

And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.

Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!

A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.

Music Of The Spheres World Tour - Delivered by DHL

Olympic stadium.

Coldplay

Their worldwide stadium tour 2023 was, of course, an overwhelming success. In Europe alone, Coldplay thrilled audiences at 37 sold-out and acclaimed open-air concerts, plus dozens more performances in Asia and America. In 2024, the band around frontman Chris Martin will continue their "Music Of The Spheres World Tour" - Delivered by DHL - and will then also come to the Olympic Stadium three times on 15., 17. and 18. August.

The quartet, founded in London at the end of the nineties, is one of the most successful bands of the 21st century worldwide. In Germany alone, five of their albums have reached the top of the charts, and their best-known hits include "Speed of Sound", "Viva la Vida" and "Paradise". Coldplay have performed at the Olympic Park four times so far. In addition to a concert in the Olympic Hall in September 2008, the British pop rockers also played twice in the Olympic Stadium (September 2012 and June 2017), plus an unforgettable open air in front of 10,000 enthusiastic fans at Coubertin Square at their park premiere in July 2005.

For their "Music of the Spheres World Tour", which began in Costa Rica in March 2022, Coldplay have so far received overwhelming reviews. The Times of London wrote of the "Greatest Live Music Show Ever". And "The Sun" recognised "a truly mesmerising spectacle". Not surprisingly, the band secured the award for Favourite Touring Artist at the American Music Awards 2022.

In Munich, Coldplay is now setting a record with three concerts on 15, 17 and 18 August 2024. No international act has ever played more consecutive open-air concerts under a tent roof.

Coldplay announced the dates for an expansive 2022 world tour in support of the group’s upcoming Max Martin-produced album, Music of the Spheres  on Thursday morning (Oct. 14). The stadium outing is slated to kick off on March 18 with the band’s first-ever show in Costa Rica, at the Estadio Nacional, before moving on to the Dominican Republic and Mexico and then touching down in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on April 23 for a U.S. run slated to last through a June 14 gig at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

H.E.R. is on board to support the majority of the dates, with London Grammar booked to open a July 10 show in Berlin and an Aug. 16 gig at Wembley Stadium in London. Tickets for the U.S. dates will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. local time here , with a release teasing that more dates will be announced soon.

Ed Sheeran Joins Coldplay to Perform 'Fix You' & 'Shape of You' at London Album Party

In an effort to make the tour as sustainable as possible, the band announced that all the shows will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with pledges to cut tour emissions by 50% from the group’s 2016-17 world tour and plant one tree for every ticket sold. According to a release, each venue will be equipped with solar installations and other renewable power sources including waste cooking oil and a kinetic stadium floor with kinetic bikes powered by fans that will store energy in the first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery.

Coldplay are also encouraging fans to use low-carbon transport to and from shows through the official tour app, rewarding those who do with a discount at the venues, in addition to making sure that all merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. In a statement, the band said, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together. At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far. If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Russians are so desperate to see Western pop stars, they are paying to go on 'concert vacations' abroad

  • A Russian tour operator is offering concert-themed package vacations.
  • Russian fans can pay to see pop stars like Ed Sheeran and James Blunt in Europe.
  • The company has sold 150 concert vacations since last year, according to The Telegraph.

Insider Today

Western pop stars have largely boycotted Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine.

Russian music fans, however, appear to be so desperate to see their favorite artists that they are paying thousands to go on "concert vacations" abroad.

Tour operator Russian Express has seen large demand for its concert-themed vacation packages, according to The Telegraph. The packages include the chance to see Ed Sheeran in Zagreb , Croatia, and James Blunt in Dubai.

A spokesperson for the operator told The Telegraph that it had sold 150 concert vacations since it launched its packages in the fall of last year. The spokesperson said these kinds of vacations are "consistently popular" and that it selects artists that appear to both "young people and the older generations."

"Imagine Dragons and Snoop Dog are the choice of young people. Scorpions and Rammstein are the choice of older people," the spokesperson told The Telegraph.

One of the packages — a five-day trip to see Ed Sheeran perform in Belgrade, Serbia, in August — costs around $1,123.

Sheeran, who last performed in Moscow in 2019, has publicly expressed his support for Ukraine and performed at the Concert for Ukraine fundraiser in 2022.

"Western superstars don't perform in Moscow anymore," Jonny Tickle, a British man living in Moscow, wrote on X. "As a result, some companies have set up travel packages including flights, accommodation, and concert tickets for Russians who want to watch their favourite singers like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa and Adele.'"

Tickle also posted ads by Moscow-based radio station Europa Plus, which is running a competition called " Live Tour 2024 ." Prizes include packages to see Adele in Munich, Coldplay in Budapest, and Taylor Swift in Vienna.

In 2021, Coldplay's bassist Guy Berryman wrote on X that the band would "for sure" want to perform in Russia after a fan asked if there was anywhere he would like to play that he hadn't visited.

However, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Coldplay didn't include Russia dates on its tour.

In 2022, Coldplay invited Svyatoslav Vakarchuk , lead singer of the Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy, onstage at their show in Brussels.

"We are at war. I want you to know we are fighting not only for Ukraine, we are fighting for world peace, freedom, and democracy," Vakarchuk said in a video of the concert posted to X.

Russian Express and Europa Plus did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Top-tier concerts helped draw over a million visitors to Sports Hub in first 3 months of 2024

coldplay world tour europe

SINGAPORE - Concerts by A-list acts in 2024 have so far not only drawn higher-than-usual numbers to the Singapore Sports Hub, but also given the Republic’s economy a significant boost.

Driven by top-tier concerts, the number of visitors to the Sports Hub in the first three months of 2024 exceeded one million, which was more than the 700,000 visitors in the second half of 2023.

The concerts alone – by Coldplay and Mayday in January, Ed Sheeran in February and Taylor Swift in March – drew a combined total of around 840,000 visitors. The shows were held at the 55,000-capacity National Stadium.

The figures were shared by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, who was personally involved in securing a deal to bring American pop star Swift and her globally successful Eras Tour to Singapore. Swift’s concert was a coup for the Republic as it was her only stop in the region.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) noted a “surge in tourism” that boosted Singapore’s economy in the first quarter of 2024 – largely due to the Coldplay and Swift concerts – in its macroeconomic review published in April.

Coldplay was estimated to have brought in over 200,000 fans over six shows in January, while Swift drew more than 300,000 fans to her six shows in March.

According to estimates by private-sector analysts, these large-scale concerts could have generated tourism receipts of between $350 million and $450 million, MAS noted, with estimates differing depending on assumptions such as the proportion of foreign visitors among the concertgoers and their length of stay in Singapore.

The economic injection Singapore saw is on track to meet these projections.

“The numbers are probably in the ballpark of the private-sector estimates... subject to STB’s (Singapore Tourism Board) evaluations, we’re probably around there,” Mr Tong told The Straits Times at the National Stadium after the HSBC SVNS Singapore rugby tournament kicked off on May 3.

Swift’s run of March concerts seemed to also boost visitor arrivals.

From January to April, Singapore had 5.7 million international visitors, with a peak of 1.48 million in March, according to figures by STB. This was about 90 per cent of the number during the same period in 2019 before the pandemic.

Singapore’s arrival figures then took a hit in April, slipping to 1.36 million visitors. This was also a weaker performance than the first two months of the year, which saw 1.44 million visitors each month.

Retail sales in Singapore also rose 2.7 per cent in March , according to data from the Department of Statistics, lifted by Swift’s Eras Tour performances that month.

“The broader-base impact (of these concerts) is greater, and the economic share goes deeper across more sectors in society and a bigger spread of the economy,” said Mr Tong.

This is unlike a marquee event like the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix where the economic impact, while significant, is typically concentrated around high-end hotels and high-end food and beverage offerings, he noted.

“Here, you have a trickle-down effect to even the mom-and-pop shops, like the beads and merchandise shops that were sold out during the Taylor Swift concerts,” he said, referring to the bead and craft shops that enjoyed a business boost as “Swifties” wiped out shelves of their items to make friendship bracelets to wear and trade at her concerts.

Foreign visitors help boost hotel occupancy

Additionally, around half the attendees for the Swift concerts were foreigners, noted Mr Tong, whereas for Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars, only around 20 per cent were foreigners, given that these acts also played shows in other parts of South-east Asia.

With the influx of visitors, hotels said they saw roaring business – usually seen only during the F1 period – in the first quarter.

STB data showed that the month of March, in particular, saw swift earnings for hotels, with overall room revenue climbing to $493.8 million, up 9.5 per cent from the $451.2 million in February, and 37 per cent higher than the year-ago period.

Hotels ST spoke to attributed the spike in business specifically to the concerts. Large hotel operators like Hilton and Marriott International saw over 90 per cent occupancy across their properties here.

coldplay world tour europe

“Between this year’s ‘concert season’ from January to April, we’ve seen a substantial increase in booking demand with higher-than-average occupancy levels across Hilton’s four properties in Singapore,” said Mr Ben George, Hilton’s Asia-Pacific senior vice-president and commercial director.

Its hotels, including Conrad Singapore Orchard and Conrad Centennial Singapore, saw collective occupancy levels reach over 90 per cent, added Mr George.

“The best performing period was during the Eras Tour week (from March 2 to March 9) when our 15 hotels in Singapore enjoyed an average occupancy of 92 per cent,” said Mr Oriol Montal, managing director for luxury, Asia-Pacific (excluding China) at Marriott International.

Pullman Singapore Orchard saw a 15 per cent spike in occupancy above normal demand for the Coldplay and Swift concerts. General manager Rob McIntyre said there were more Indonesian guests for Coldplay but an increase in travellers from the Philippines for Swift.

Hotel operators also saw a younger demographic of customers booking rooms, with a longer average stay.

At newly opened boutique hotel 21 Carpenter in Carpenter Street, general manager Tarun Kalra said the majority of guests were in their 20s and early 30s from all over the region, as bookings increased by about 30 per cent compared with typical weeks – especially during the six-night Swift concerts in March.

“This surge in bookings highlighted a strong correlation between the popularity of the concerts and increased hotel occupancy,” said Mr Kalra.

coldplay world tour europe

Similarly, Amara Singapore said the majority of its guests who booked stays during this period were between the ages of 30 and 35, with a significant proportion from South-east Asia.

Senior vice-president of Amara Hotels and Resorts Dawn Teo said guests typically arrived a few days before the concert to explore the city and left a day after attending the concert.

Operators welcomed the temporary boosts in occupancy, but were also mindful of keeping the influx of guests steady throughout the year.

“While we welcome these short-term increases, we also recognise the importance of (Singapore) maintaining a consistent pipeline of events throughout the year,” said 21 Carpenter’s Mr Kalra.

“A more balanced mix of event types would further enhance our ability to cater to various guest preferences and maintain steadier occupancy levels.”
