What our customer says, frequently asked questions.

The majority of courses in Scotland are open all year round, but generally the golfing season runs from the beginning of April to mid-October. The long daylight hours from May to September attracts many golfers to Scotland. During June, the sunlight hours can be from 4:30am to 10:00am ideal for those wishing to play more than one round. Typically, June, July and August are the busiest months for visitors golfing in Scotland.

However, travelling during shoulder season – March/April or late October/November may be a better option for certain people due to the savings which can be made at a number of the courses. Things to be aware of especially in the months of March and November is that some courses require players to play off fairway mats and they may also have winter greens in use.

This is always quite a difficult question to answer as Scottish weather is known to be very unpredictable! You can have a beautiful day in March and then a cold week of rain in August, therefore our advice is to come prepared for all weather types and pack plenty of layers, warm clothing and waterproofs – during just one round of golf in Scotland you can experience all 4 seasons!

Scotland’s average summer temperature ranges from 60-74F (or 15-23°), with temperatures usually highest during July and August. However, July and August can sometimes experience more rain than the months of April and May. Temperatures begin to drop in September and October and these months can also bring more wet weather.

Due to ever growing demand of golf in Scotland, we recommend to try and start planning your trip around 18-12 months prior to secure your preferred courses. Especially if you are looking to play The Open venues such as The Old Course, Muirfield and Troon.

Visitors always receive a warm Scottish welcome and are treated like a member for the day with access to all the facilities including locker rooms, showers and practice areas/driving ranges if available. Practically all golf clubs also have a nice bar and restaurant where you can enjoy a bite to eat either before or after your round.

A range of Welcome Schemes have been developed by Visit Scotland including the ‘Visiting Golfers Welcome’ scheme which recognises the special efforts made by golf clubs to provide and accommodate visiting golfers. Follow the link to see which golf clubs and courses are participating in the scheme:  Visiting Golfers Scheme .

Generally, most clubs ask for golfers to wear appropriate golfing attire with collared shirts or turtlenecks. Shorts are allowed as long as they are tailored (some courses also require knee length socks if wearing shorts).

Denim, jeans, t-shirts, cargo or combat trousers/shorts, tracksuits, rugby and football shirts are not permitted on the course or in the clubhouse. Sometimes clubs will allow smart denim jeans in the clubhouse. The majority of clubs also do not allow golf shoes within the clubhouse.

A formal dress code of jacket and tie is required if dining at Muirfield and Prestwick Golf Club .

More information can be provided on request for specific courses.

Yes, there are certain golf clubs that require a handicap certificate to play especially the bigger championship courses. The Old Course in St Andrews has a very strict policy in place and you must show your handicap certificate to the starter. The maximum handicap at The Old Course is 24 for men and 36 for ladies. Muirfield is lower at 18 for both men and ladies. Some clubs are more lenient; however, we always recommend for our clients to bring their handicap certificate with them.

Golf packages, golf events, other services, what our clients say.

Sensational trip, and fantastic courses. Think the general consensus was West Hill was the best out of the 3, very easy on the eye. Hotel was very good and we enjoyed a top notch meal at The Red Lion, Horsell. All in all a super trip. Tim Scott, England - September 2023
We were a group of four traveling to Scotland for my 50th birthday this September. We initially contacted Callum in February and right from the get go he provided exemplary service. We had quite a diverse itinerary that included three rounds of golf (Kingsbarns, Jubilee and Nairn), skeet shooting, whisky distilleries (Glenlivet and Tomatin) and historic sites and he put it all together with perfect timing. His knowledge of the towns and regions made some long drives feel like a history lesson and we soaked it all in. Hotels, restaurants and club rentals were all arranged to perfection. At the conclusion of our quick four days we all left feeling like we had made a new friend. If you are planning a golf trip to Scotland (or even Ireland), you’ll be in good hands with Callum. Photo credit www.torvalmork.com Torval Mork, Canada - September 2023
Callum was an absolute pleasure to deal with. He worked with us to set up a perfect trip to the Ayrshire coastal area. Royal Troon, Turnberry Ailsa and 5 other courses. He set up local dinner times for us and included a scotch tasting at The Jar in Troon. Picked us up at the airport personally and took us to our hotel, had transportation arranged for the remainder of the week and then joined us on our last night for dinner and then back to Edinburgh for our return flight home. If you are even considering a trip to Great Britain, I highly recommend you check out Golf Concierge Scotland. You won't be disappointed. Daniel Ferris, New Jersey, USA - June 2023
Thanks a million for the fantastic organisation of our Scotland Golftrip. Great courses, great agenda, great recommendations on accommodation and food - it was just a super perfect golf outing - thanks to you. We would always come back and make good use of your knowledge and organisational skills - thus we had the most enjoyable time in the kingdom of golf. WE WILL BE BACK. All the best Norbert Norbert Podschlapp - Germany, June 2023
Our group are still talking about how much we enjoyed the Ireland experience and coming back for more!! Thank you for all your help! Thomas Halsted - Connecticut, USA - May 2023

Golf Course of the Season

Western gailes - 2023.

One of Scotland's finest and toughest links courses, Western Gailes never fails to deliver. With such majestic neighbours as Royal Troon, Prestwick and Dundonald, not to mention the Ailsa Turnberry Course slightly further down the coast, it would be easy for this scintillating course to be overshadowed, but it's 7,000 yards of undulating fairways are a delight to play and it is no surprise that it regularly featured as a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship when the event has been held in Ayrshire.Expect sand dunes, ferocious winds, thick gorse and narrow fairways with natural bowl-shaped greens where you'll be rewarded for good golf but equally punished for any mistakes you make!!Inside the impressive clubhouse, you will find a warm welcome from members and some fine hospitality, including a complimentary lunch with your green fees. The wood-panelled décor gives a real feel for the history of the club, of which its membership is rightfully proud and there's much evidence of the club's historic events marked on its walls.

Muirfield course pictured on a sunny day

Scotland is the historic 'Home of Golf', where the game has been played for centuries. As a result many of the finest golf courses on the planet can be found within its borders, with the country home to world famous links courses like St Andrews' Old Course, Royal Dornoch, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Royal Troon and many others.

In the Golf Monthly UK and Ireland Top 100 Golf Courses list, 25 courses from Scotland feature and five of the top six are all in Scotland. Most of these are links, which Scotland is famed for, but a few inland entries include two stunning layouts at the brilliant Gleneagles as well as the delightful Rosemount course at Blairgowrie. The best golf courses in England can rival many of Scotland's but north of the border is certainly where the charm and character comes out due to the heritage and history on offer.

Below we list the top 25 best golf courses in Scotland according to the latest Golf Monthly top 100 rankings...

St Andrews - Old

St Andrews Old Course pictured

  • Opened: 1552
  • Designed by: Old Tom Morris and Daw Anderson (1850s)
  • Top 100 ranking: 2nd
  • Green fee: £98-£270

The most famous course in the world - simply a must play for every golfer. Seven double greens, only two short holes and only two par-5s; the Road Hole and the Swilcan Bridge give this course more history than any other. It is probably one of the most playable layouts as high handicappers won't get beaten up. Wander round the famous Home End and take in the everything the experience has to offer at what is one of the world's bucket list golf courses .

Muirfield Golf course pictured

  • Location: Gullane, East Lothian

  • Designed by: Old Tom Morris, Harry Colt and Tom Simpson
  • Top 100 ranking: 3rd
  • Green fee: £285-£420

A perfect links course along an exceptional stretch of terrain where routing, variety and conditioning are of the highest order. It has hosted The Open Championship on sixteen occasions from Lee Trevino's chip-in win to Phil Mickelson 's win six years ago. The course largely runs in two loops, the front nine is clockwise around the outside with the back nine sitting in the centre. It means varying wind is a huge factor. This complete golfing test never fails to deliver.

Trump Turnberry - Ailsa

Trump Turnberry Ailsa course pictured

  • Location: Turnberry, Ayrshire
  • Founded: 1902
  • Designed by: Archibald Kennedy and William Fernie (Martin Ebert redesign 2016)
  • Top 100 ranking: 4th
  • Green fee: £275-£395

Despite being the host of four Open Championships (1977, 1986, 1994 & 2009), the course still underwent major changes a few years ago. Martin Ebert was tasked with this and he did a great job. The boldest changes are around the turn beginning with the par-3 9th along the cliffs, which is now followed by a snaking par-5 right along the coastline. The lighthouse itself has been converted into a stunning halfway house, one of the best in golf. It's expensive but it is as good as it gets.

Carnoustie - Championship

Carnoustie Golf Links pictured

  • Location: Carnoustie, Angus
  • Founded: 1842
  • Designed by: Allan Robertson, Old Tom Morris and James Braid
  • Top 100 ranking: 5th
  • Green fee: £270

The challenging Angus links is a stalwart of the top-10 of our ranking. There’s a strong case for saying that Carnoustie’s championship course may be the most challenging in this country. It delivers a complete test of golf as displayed each time a Major championship visits, whether that be The Open Championship, or the AIG Women's Open. Francesco Molinari won over baked fairways in 2018 with the ball running like a scalded cat upon landing. Padraig Harrington came through an epic tussle with Sergio Garcia in 2007. But, for many Carnoustie will always stir memories of 1999, Jean Van de Velde’s 72nd hole collapse, and Paul Lawrie’s famous comeback victory.

Royal Dornoch - Championship

Royal Dornoch Golf Club pictured

  • Location: Dornoch, Sutherland
  • Founded: 1877
  • Designed by: Donald Ross
  • Top 100 ranking: 6th
  • Green fee: £125-£335

Around 45 miles north of Inverness, there’s a sense of splendid isolation to be found on the fairways at Royal Dornoch. Tom Watson, an honorary member of the club, described the links as “One of the great courses of the five continents.” The philanthropist and industrialist Andrew Carnegie said of his home in Dornoch, “If there is heaven on earth, it is here.” Are the plaudits and praise justified? In a word, yes. This is a captivating place that will leave an indelible imprint on the memory. Another Old Tom Morris design makes the list and it is one of the most northernly courses in Scotland. It is a classic yet timeless links course with glorious view, and improved transport links has made it a lot easier to reach this course.

Trump International Golf Links

Trump International Golf Links Scotland pictured

  • Location: Balmedie, Aberdeenshire
  • Opened: 2012
  • Designed by: Martin Hawtree
  • Top 100 ranking: 14th
  • Green fee: £305

Since opening for play in 2012, Trump International Golf Links on the coast north of Aberdeen, has earned a reputation as one of the very best coastal courses in the country. Whatever views you have on the owners, the golfing offering is spectacular. This jaw-dropping layout is one of the best modern links has to offer, delivering superb variety between the mountainous grass-topped hills. You get great views of the North Sea and the beaches adjacent to it. The vistas from the tees, in particular the 14th, are breathtaking.

- Full Trump International Golf Links review

Kingsbarns Links pictured

  • Location: Kingsbarns, Fife
  • Opened: 2000
  • Designed by: Kyle Phillips
  • Top 100 ranking: 15th

Generous fairways and gathering greens mean that this modern links course isn't too punishing. It is set on the beautiful coastline and has become one of the best seaside tracks over the last 20 years, hosting the Alfred Dunhill Links each year as well as the 2017 Women's British Open. There are many a great hole but the 12th and 13th are clear standouts as they hug the shoreline tightly. The clubhouse at Kingsbarns also blends the old and new. Wood panelled and decorated with oil paintings, it has the feel of an old-school Scottish club minus any stuffiness or pretension. Much like the course, it’s perfectly thought out and constructed to the highest specifications.

Royal Aberdeen - Balgownie

Royal Aberdeen Balgownie course pictured

  • Location: Aberdeen
  • Founded: 1780
  • Designed by: Robert and Archie Simpson
  • Top 100 ranking: 16th
  • Green fee: £195-£370

A classic Scottish links with narrow and rumpled fairways, sloping greens, testing run-off areas and tricky bunkers. Architecture and typical links elements help deliver a stern test by which both professional and amateur tournaments have been hosted here. Archie and Robert Simpson from Carnoustie designed the first layout at Balgownie, before James Braid advised on alterations to the greens and bunkering in 1925. Hawtree and Company have more recently added their touches.

Royal Troon - Old

Royal Troon - Old Course pictured

  • Location: Troon, Ayrshire
  • Founded: 1878
  • Designed by: George Strath, Willie Fernie and James Braid
  • Top 100 ranking: 17th
  • Green fee: £260

Host to one of the most exciting Open Championships in recent times when Henrik Stenson outduelled Phil Mickelson in a thrilling final round in 2016, then to the highly memorable AIG Women’s Open in 2020, won by Sophia Popov, golf fans (and the golfing media) have been reminded just what a superb links the Old Course at Royal Troon is. Huge skies stretch above as you forge out from the clubhouse, and the front nine takes you towards the loop and the famous “Postage Stamp” 8th hole, one of the most famous par-3s in the world. The back nine is very punishing as it is played back into the wind.

Castle Stuart

Castle Stuart Golf Links pictured

  • Location: Inverness
  • Opened: 2009
  • Designed by: Gil Hanse and Mark Parsinen
  • Top 100 ranking: 21st
  • Green fee: £235-£300

This course has hosted the Scottish Open four times since opening only ten years ago. Stylish and compact, it puts a new spin on modern golf links. It gives cracking views across to the Black Isle and is one of the world's most incredible golf courses . There is an emphasis on accuracy around this cleverly designed links. The early holes on both nines play in different directions along a lower shelf right beside the Firth, with the water highly adjacent on the right heading out, and the back nine then playing away from the clubhouse and vast putting green in the opposite direction with the Firth in play for a hook.

North Berwick - West Links

North Berwick Links and the sea pictured

  • Location: North Berwick, East Lothian
  • Founded: 1832
  • Designed by: David Strath, Old Tom Morris, Ben Sayers and C.K Hutchison
  • Top 100 ranking: 30th
  • Green fee: £175

As you head out from the town you go towards the sea - you'll be negotiating walls, burns, bumps and hollows. The 13th to 15th is one of the most famous stretches in golf with the final hole of the three, a 192-yard par-3 being one of the most copied in the world. The West Links, on the golf-rich East Lothian coast, is living proof that the design philosophies of a bygone era can still be very much part of the modern game. Indeed, many would argue that the challenges of some of the quirkier elements of this wonderful old links are exactly what the game is missing in certain quarters.

Nairn - Championship

Nairn Golf Club pictured

  • Location: Nairn, Highland
  • Founded: 1887
  • Designed by: Archie Simpson and Old Tom Morris
  • Top 100 ranking: 35th
  • Green fee: £160-£285

Dating from 1887, this superb links has welcomed many important competitions over the years, including the 1999 Walker Cup and 2012 Curtis Cup. The Amateur Championship visited for a second time in June 2021. This is a thinker’s course with testing greens and run-off areas demanding careful placement. Old Tom Morris  and  James Braid  both had a significant hand in the shaping of this fine old links on the Moray Firth. The holes play mostly along the Firth in either direction, save for a brief foray up and away in the middle of the back nine where the feel becomes more heathland for a few holes with magnificent views.

Gleneagles - King's

Gleneagles King's course pictured on a sunny day

  • Location: Auchterarder, Perthshire
  • Founded: 1919
  • Designed by: James Braid
  • Top 100 ranking: 38th
  • Green fee: £140-£300

James Braid’s long-revered Perthshire masterpiece enjoys quite simply one of the most beautiful settings for golf in the UK&I. Carved through the pine trees, the King’s rises and falls over springy moorland turf. Scotland's number one inland course is designed to play like an inward links with tightly cut fairways that are now 40 per cent wider while a new tee on the final hole stretches its yardage to 555. There's the odd blind shot around a number of breathtaking backdrops. It's a must-play.

Dumbarnie Links

Dumbarnie Links pictured

  • Location: Leven, Fife
  • Opened: 2020
  • Designed by: Clive Clark
  • Top 100 ranking: 40th
  • Green fee: £185-£258

It had been talked about for years and eagerly anticipated for some time once work commenced, but it finally became a reality in 2020. The brainchild of former Ryder Cup player, Clive Clark, Dumbarnie serves up a truly exceptional golfing experience, playing from an elevated clubhouse right down to the shore at times via a series of remarkable holes, many of which stand out visually. Among them is a trio playing downhill towards the Firth of Forth - the appetite-whetting 1st, the simply gorgeous short par-3 8th and the attractively bunkered 9th. Just nine miles from St Andrews, this modern gem is a very welcome addition to the already-fantastic golf on offer in Fife. It's home to what we think is the best new clubhouse in Scotland .

Prestwick Golf Links pictured

  • Location: Prestwick, Ayrshire
  • Founded: 1851
  • Designed by: Old Tom Morris
  • Top 100 ranking: 44th
  • Green fee: £145-£160

It can sometimes be easy to forget that St Andrews is not the true home of The Open. The first 12 Opens were played on this famed Ayrshire links that was less than a decade old when eight players teed it up for the inaugural Challenge Belt in October 1860. Packed with blind shots, drivable par-4s, desert-sized bunkering and rollercoaster greens, Prestwick is a lesson in course design. A true one-off and a must-play for golf fans.

Western Gailes

Western Gailes pictured

  • Location: Irvine, Ayrshire
  • Founded: 1897
  • Designed by: Fred Morris and Fred Hawtree
  • Top 100 ranking: 47th
  • Green fee: £185-£245

Set between railway and sea, the recently improved Western Gailes in Ayrshire delivers an exacting challenge over the purest golfing terrain. It shows exactly what Scottish links is all about and is close to links golf heaven. Some great green settings and thought-provoking par-4s, a thorough test of golf with stunning views to Arran to accompany it.

The Machrie

The Machrie pictured

  • Location: Isle of Islay
  • Founded: 1891
  • Designed by: Willie Campbell
  • Top 100 ranking: 52nd
  • Green fee: £130-£160

The famous Islay links is now reaping the full dividends of DJ Russell's course transformation, and that's why it climbed 38 spots in our 21/22 Top 100 rankings from 90th to 52nd. The new Machrie plays over a rumpled landscape of unending drama, with several front-nine tees right on the shore. It's a magnificent place to play golf with some truly magical green settings.

Gleneagles - Queen's

Gleneagles Queen's course pictured

  • Founded: 1917

The Queen’s is a gorgeous layout on the higher ground of the Gleneagles estate whose test and challenge confound its modest yardage. The shortest of the three at Gleneagles, at just 5,965 yards, makes the list as it is regarded by many as the most enchanting. More heather has been introduced to enhance the beautiful aesthetics on offer. The back-to-back par-3s at 13 and 14 around a small loch are a joy to play and the course really shows that length isn't everything.

Gullane - No.1

Gullane No.1 pictured

  • Founded: 1882
  • Designed by: Unknown
  • Top 100 ranking: 61st
  • Green fee: £180-£250

Wispy grasses, pot bunkers and stunning views over the Firth of Forth, this is a golf links teeming with character. Gullane is unusual in the sense that it's a true links running around and over a hill. It has also hosted the Scottish Open twice, in 2015 when Rickie Fowler triumphed and again in 2018, with Brandon Stone coming out on top. Excellent new practice facilities have enhanced the offering at Gullane. The No.1 course is the premier of the three excellent offerings at the club, where golf is thought to have been played for 350 years.

The beguiling links at Machrihanish features a magical allure and captivating front nine that is blessed with stunning views out to the islands of Jura, Islay and Gigha. Old Tom Morris extended this famous Kintyre links from 12 to 18 holes back in 1879 and in doing so created one of the most iconic opening holes - driving off of a beach. It offers stunning views of the Hebrides. Offering up fantastic value, Machrihanish is one of the best Scottish golf courses under £100 you can play.

Cruden Bay - Championship

  • Location: Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire
  • Opened: 1899
  • Designed by: Old Tom Morris and Archie Simpson
  • Top 100 ranking: 69th
  • Green fee: £145-£190

An Old-school links charm with a twist, the elevation changes and dunes at Cruden Bay throw up the most wonderful, panoramic views. Burns, bunkers and bumps will test every element of your game. The excellent and widely admired Championship Course at Cruden Bay is more than just a traditional links with a strong heritage. In 1894 the Great North of Scotland Railway Company commissioned the building of a course at Cruden Bay to accompany its hotel that was being constructed at the same time. The course, designed by Old Tom Morris and Archie Simpson, and the hotel were opened in 1899.

St Andrews - New

St Andrews New Course pictured

  • Opened: 1895
  • Top 100 ranking: 70th
  • Green fee: £90

Designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris, the New Course at St Andrews was opened for play in 1895. It sits immediately alongside the most famous course in the world, and is very much a leading links in its own right. The Links Trust describes the course as “The oldest ‘new’ course in the world.” Some commentators, and particularly some locals, believe that the course is actually better strategically than the Old. Whatever your view on this, there is no doubting that there are plenty of strong holes.

Blairgowrie - Rosemount

Blairgowrie Rosemount 18th green and clubhouse beyond pictured

  • Location: Blairgowrie and Rattray, Perthshire
  • Founded: 1889
  • Designed by: Alister MacKenzie and James Braid
  • Top 100 ranking: 74th
  • Green fee: £70-95

A look through the Top 100 listings will reveal the name of James Braid numerous times. He is one of our most prolific, respected and admired architects. The Rosemount Course is one of two very fine courses at Blairgowrie, and it is Braid’s 1930s reworking of an earlier Alister MacKenzie design. Tree-lined fairways fill some golfers with trepidation, but although positioning from the tee is important here, the fairways are reasonably generous and welcoming. The Rosemount Course is a peaceful golfing haven offering a beautiful but challenging round of golf played through magnificent specimen trees

St Andrews - Castle

St Andrews Castle Course pictured

  • Opened: 2008
  • Designed by: David McLay Kidd
  • Top 100 ranking: 89th
  • Green fee: £125

Set on the cliffs around Kinkell Ness to the south and east of St Andrews, The Castle Course was constructed to a design by renowned architect David McLay Kidd. The latest edition to St Andrews' class collection, it delivers a different view, a different terrain and a different test. It's an undulating rollercoaster of a course that delivers great fun and tremendous variety throughout.

Murcar Links pictured

  • Founded: 1909
  • Designed by: Archie Simpson, James Braid and George Smith
  • Top 100 ranking: 94th
  • Green fee: £130-£150

The club dates back to 1909, and its course is blessed with all the ingredients that make up a great links. Close enough to Royal Aberdeen to swap scorecards through the fence, an overhit approach at the third hole could take you onto the 10th tee next door. This connection extends to the original architect, Archie Simpson, who was then both Professional and Head Greenkeeper at Balgownie, and who designed the layout. Murcar is another classic with elevated tees, rumpled fairways, plenty of gorse and heather, as well as fantastic wide views out to sea. A top-drawer links that needs more recognition.

What is the best golf course in Scotland

The best golf course in Scotland is St Andrews' Old Course. The world famous links, which hosts its 30th Open Championship, and the historic 150th edition, in 2022 is truly magical. It ranks 2nd in our UK and Ireland Top 100 courses list, which is the highest of all 25 Scottish courses in the rankings.

What are the major golf courses in Scotland?

Scotland is known for hosting The Open Championship, with the country boasting a number of past and current venues on the Open rota. Prestwick played host to the first Open Championship and 24 editions altogether. St Andrews is the home of the world's oldest golf Major now, with 29 Opens to its name and a 30th right around the corner. Other current Scottish venues on the Open rota include Royal Toon, Muirfield and Carnoustie. Musselburgh was also a former Open venue, whilst Turnberry has hosted four Open Championships, most recently in 2009.

How many golf courses are there in Scotland?

There are 614 golf courses in Scotland, according to the R&A's 2019 Golf Around the World release. Of the UK/Ireland nations, England is top with 2,270 courses, Ireland is third behind Scotland with 494 and Wales is fourth with 186 courses.

Why is Scotland the home of golf?

The first definitive record of golf comes from Scotland – a 1457 statute of Scottish King, James II that specifically forbade the playing of “golfe.” Scotland is home to the world's oldest golf club, which is 'The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers', formed in 1744. The HCEG currently plays out of Muirfield in East Lothian.

5 under-the-radar Scotland golf trips we're booking right now

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/machrihanish-dunes-scotland-stephen-szurlej-hero.jpg

Stephen Szurlej

It’s likely been awhile since many American golfers have planned an international golf trip. But as travel restrictions are finally easing around the globe, we’re more ready than ever to put together a golf itinerary.

Scottish golf needs no introduction. The best courses in Scotland are likely already on your bucket list—and if you’re not familiar, it’s easy enough to find them on a list like our world rankings . Where we endeavor to help you here, though, is finding the under-the-radar courses that might not be on your radar. One of the most rewarding parts of planning a great trip is mixing in a hidden gem—sometimes your group will enjoy that just as much as the top-ranked course.

For those thinking about planning a trip some time soon, we’re here to help. We asked our friends at Golfbreaks by PGA TOUR for a list of under-the-radar-type courses to add to your next Scottish golf trip. Scotland will be at the top of many golfers’ list, particularly with The Open coming to the Old Course at St. Andrews in 2022. Happy planning.

Scottish Highlands

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/brora-jerry-tarde.jpg

Jerry Tarde

A list of under-the-radar Scottish courses needs to start with Brora (above). For those who frequent the area, Brora is often mentioned as a must-play. On paper, a 6,211-yard layout might seem like a letdown after playing Royal Dornoch , a top-five course in the world . But Brora hugs Kintradwell Bay with vistas that include views of a granite mountain, Ord of Caithness, looming over the sea—as well as sheep and cows grazing in the fairways. Brora earned a spot in most recent Golf Digest’s Most Fun Courses ranking—which every golfer who’s played the James Braid layout would agree with.

Also just slightly north of Dornoch is Golspie Golf Club , another gem designed by Braid that opened two years before Brora. Like Brora, it ain’t long at just over 6,000 yards. Golspie features more varied terrain but views just like Brora.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Moray.JPG

You’ll be familiar with the Moray Firth on any Highlands trip, but one of the better clubs in the area also has ‘Moray’ in the name. The Old Course at Moray was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris, and at 6,700-plus yards is significantly longer than the two shorter gems mentioned above. The Old Course hugs the coastline and is worth including on any Highlands itinerary—and if you’re looking for an easy 36-hole day, the New course at Moray, designed by Henry Cotton in 1979, is right there, too.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Fortrose-Rosemarkie.jpg

Also on the Moray Firth, just 20 minutes from Inverness on the Chanonry Peninsula, is Fortrose & Rosemarkie, which bills itself as the 15th-oldest club in the world—first opening in 1793. Braid redesigned the layout after new land was acquired in the 1930s. During World War II, the course was used as training grounds for practice landing ahead of D-Day.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Tain-Golf-Club.jpg

Tain Golf Club also features an Old Tom Morris design a town over from Glenmorangie and just a 15-minute drive from Royal Dornoch . Tain often gets overlooked by the other great courses in the region, and though it lacks the seaside acreage of the other courses in this article, it’s a memorable layout with the back-to-back par-3 16th and 17th holes.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Castle-Stuart.jpg

We are quite sure you have courses like Castle Stuart (above) and Nairn (and Royal Dornoch, of course) already on your Scottish Highlands trip plans. We hope this helps you round out your route.

St. Andrews

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/St-Andrews-New.jpg

Anybody planning a trip to Scotland knows making a stop in the St. Andrews area is a must. While it may be tough—and certainly more expensive—to get a tee time at The Old Course , players can still hit up the Home of Golf for a round without breaking the bank. There are seven courses on site, including The New Course (above), designed by Old Tom Morris. If not for it sitting in the shadow of its older sibling, this course may see a lot more traffic.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Crail-Golfing-Society.jpg

From one of the oldest golfing societies in the world to another, Crail Golfing Society (above), 12 miles east of St. Andrews, offers two courses for play, but it’s the Balcomie Links that makes this list. Designed by Tom Morris in 1900, this course is relatively short by today’s standards, but offers little protection from a north wind blowing across St. Andrews Bay, which can wreck a round.

LT.5

Mark Alexander

Located 10 miles south of St. Andrews on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, Leven Links is another course that used to be nine holes before Old Tom Morris added another nine. Leven regularly hosts Open Championship qualifying.

675736199XX00012_General_Vi

David Cannon

Back up north, across St. Andrews Bay and two miles west of Carnoustie , Panmure Links (above) is yet another Old Tom Morris design. It should come as no shock, then, to learn that the course has hosted Open Championship Final Qualifying several times. Ben Hogan famously spent two weeks at Panmure before the 1953 Open at Carnoustie where he went on to win his only Claret Jug, by four strokes.

Of course, while it’s always nice to stay within budget, sometimes it’s worth it to splurge a bit, too. Right next to Panmure , there’s Carnoustie , a permanent fixture in the Open rota with a propensity for final-round drama: Jean van de Velde collapsed there in 1999; Francesco Molinari held off Tiger Woods and others in 2018. The 18th hole is most famous for the chaos Barry Burn can cause, but the truth is, that’s just the third leg of a brutal three-hole finish. Before they get there, players must negotiate the 240-yard par-3 16th, followed by the 470-yard par-4 17th, where the Barry Burn must be crossed twice to reach the green.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Kingsbarns.jpg

Just east of St. Andrews, golf has been played on the land that Kingsbarns Golf Links occupies since 1793, but this course is relatively brand new, having only opened in 2000. This seaside links is part of the rotation of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Dumbarnie.15.08.19.MKIII.2.2

Back down near the Firth of Forth, Dumbarnie just opened its doors to the public in May of 2020. What it lacks in history, this course more than makes up for in spectacular views. At least 14 holes feature views of the sea, and the 345-acre plot of land lends itself to stunning elevation changes uncommon to seaside links golf.

Trump International Golf Links

Aberdeen may be known more for its top-end options— Royal Aberdeen and Trump Internationa l (above)—but with 165 miles of coastline, there is no shortage of more affordable options. Referred to as the oil capital of Europe, Aberdeen is full of nightlife, pubs and restaurants.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Murcar.JPG

First up, and just 10 minutes outside of the city, is Murcar Links . This place may not exactly be a “hidden” gem, given its location right next to some of the biggest courses in the area, but it could be overlooked. It’s not particularly long at just 6,500 yards from the tips, but can still punish golfers with massive sand dunes and thick, heathery rough. Say a prayer if the wind is up, especially if it’s coming from the north. A must-play when visiting Aberdeen, Murcar is the perfect place to either squeeze a quick round into a busy day or as the first or second leg of a 36-hole day with one of the nearby titans of the area.

Branching out a bit, roughly an hour south of the city in Angus, the world’s fifth oldest golf course awaits. Montrose Golf Links was completed in 1562, though it has been touched up a few times since then. Unlike most seaside links, Montrose is laid out in a T-shape, with the first nine playing along the coast, while the second plays perpendicular to it before turning back toward the clubhouse. On the other hand, the course also follows many other links “rules” as sandy turf, gorse bushes, deep bunkers and dunes are aplenty. Luckily, there’s another course on property that’s a bit easier and is often played as a warm up for the 1562 course.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Cruden-Bay-Golf-Club.jpg

In the opposite direction from Aberdeen, Cruden Bay Golf Club is just a bit more than half an hour north of the city. Golf had been played on this land for 100 years before the course we play today, yet another Old Tom Morris design, was open for play. Coming in at No. 53 on Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Courses , Cruden Bay hasn’t been touched since 1926. This links runs in a figure eight along the North Sea, with dunes the size of small buildings separating several holes as undulating fairways give way to punchbowl greens carved into those same dunes that serve as tee boxes and natural barriers.

Moving south and back toward the city, travelers may opt to spice things up with a round at Trump International or Royal Aberdeen . Trump International opened in 2012, after years of legal battles and environmental objections, with the goal of one day hosting a major championship. Though it has yet to attract the world’s best in an official capacity, there’s no doubt this course was built for them. Checking in at No. 42 on Golf Digest’s World’s Greatest Courses the 7,400-yard brute regularly plays through stiff crosswinds, while long rough, deviously placed bunkers and fast greens combine to test every facet of a player’s game. Choose your tee box carefully. This is not the place to try to be a hero.

Royal-Aberdeen-Golf-Club-hole-12.jpg

Completing a full loop through the Aberdeen area, right across the street from Murcar is Royal Aberdeen . The Balgownie Links have hosted the 2005 British Senior Open, the 2011 Walker Cup and the 2014 Scottish Open, adding to one of the richest histories in the world. Royal Aberdeen, originally founded in 1780 as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, is the sixth-oldest club in the world. The first nine holes here are widely regarded as one of the finest outward nines in the world, playing parallel to the coast before looping back south to play toward the clubhouse on higher ground. The five-minute rule for looking for golf balls—now three minutes—was first introduced here in 1783. The Balgownie Links rank 64th on Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Courses .

Edinburgh and East Lothian

North-Berwick-Golf-Club-14.jpg

David Cannon/Getty Images

Every area of Scotland has its own charm. But the East Lothian/Edinburgh earned a spot in our most recent “Best Buddies Trips” ranking for its variety and volume of great courses. You start, of course, with some of the country’s greats like Muirfield and North Berwick (above, a favorite of many). But it seems like there are as many under-the-radar tracks here as any other spot.

As a 2013 Golf Digest article stated, Gullane is the perfect place to stay—as the town lives and breathes golf. And you’re a short walk to Gullane Golf Club , which has three courses—the No. 1 course, which consistently ranks inside our top 20 in Scotland, and the No. 2 , which also boasts great coastal views. Don’t sleep on Dunbar , Kilspindie , Luffness , and the original nine holes inside the Musselburgh racetrack, among the oldest courses in the world.

South west coast

The Ayrshire coast is home to bucket-list, championship layouts like Royal Troon and Turnberry’s Ailsa . But it’s the under-the-radar tracks that makes this a great destination for non-Scottish travelers.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/firepit-scotland-from-the-sky/3-Prestwick.jpeg

Despite it hosting the first 12 Opens starting in 1860, Prestwick belongs on this list. Some call it too quirky, others would call it charming. Those who appreciate history and course design will mark it on their must-play list and decide for themselves where it falls on the quirky vs. charming matrix. With its roots in influencing course design for centuries, it’s certainly a must-see.

Western Gailes , like Prestwick , made Golf Digest’s latest World 100 rankings and represents what Ron Whitten called “perhaps the least-known grand old Scottish links.” And like Prestwick, it’s a tight design that is routed over and between rolling sand dunes. Sitting just north of Royal Troon, it was routed by Troon designer Willie Fernie, though the club insists its first greenkeeper Fred Morris laid out the course.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/macrihanish-scotland-stephen-szurlej.jpg

The hits keep coming in this area. Machrihanish is ranked 46th in the world but remains under-the-radar in respect to the other great Scottish courses for its relative difficulty to get to on the southern end of the Kintyre Peninsula. From a stirring opening tee shot across a corner of the Atlantic Ocean to the last putt, this has remained one of the most pure links experiences since Old Tom Morris extended the course to 18 holes in 1879.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/3/scotland-value/Dundonald-Links.jpg

Among worthy additions to your itinerary, Dundonald Links should be near the top. Kyle Phillips did a marvelous job with a renewed layout of the old Southern Gailes that’s worthy of recognition even in the same neighborhood as these other great courses.

PGA Championship 2024 live updates: Scottie Scheffler climbs leaderboard despite arrest for assault of a police officer

116 New Updates

Luke Brown

Scottie Scheffler arrested by police before second round

World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was charged with assaulting a police officer outside Valhalla Golf Club hours before starting his second round at the 2024 PGA Championship.

Scheffler — who was also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic — was released by police just in time to take to the course for his tee-off time of 10:08am ET. He impressed with a five-under round of 66 that moved him into third, at nine-under for the tournament.

The Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections, who posted a mugshot of the 27-year-old, said he was booked in at 7.28am local time and released at 8.40am. Scheffler later described the incident as “a big misunderstanding”.

The start of Friday’s second round was delayed by 80 minutes because of an unrelated crash near the course . Louisville police said a shuttle bus had struck and killed a pedestrian outside the golf club. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg later named him as local man John Mills.

PGA Championship contender Robert MacIntyre credits ‘happy Bob’ mindset for good golf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Robert MacIntyre is used to making on-the-fly adjustments, ones that have brought him to this moment — tied for fourth at the PGA Championship after shooting a 5-under-par 66 on Thursday.

The left-handed golfer grew up battling the swirling gusts customary to his hometown of Oban in the Scottish Highlands. He dominated Scotland’s amateur scene on the best links courses in the world, where failure to acclimate to changing conditions can drive you into the ground. But this week — as he plays the PGA Championship as a PGA Tour member for the first time — MacIntyre is facing his biggest adjustment yet.

MacIntyre earned his PGA Tour card after a successful 2023 DP World Tour season (formerly the European Tour). But since picking up his bags and establishing a base in Orlando, Fla., to play in the tour full time, MacIntyre has been open about the fact he’s struggling to adapt to his new lifestyle. He’s chasing his dream of winning major championships, but the day-to-day inner workings of that effort are not what he expected.

The weeks are long. The stakes are high. Many players keep to themselves. The environment is a stark contrast to MacIntyre’s experience on the DP World Tour, and it’s not just because he’s playing new golf courses with foreign strains of grass. His European peers like to chat. The Americans, in his experience, don’t. Swing coaches, psychologists and trainers accompany their players to practice sessions and dinners. On the DP World Tour, everyone is in it together. Time on the road felt like home away from home for MacIntyre. So far, the PGA Tour has been far from that.

Scottie Scheffler is in a fight at this PGA Championship. It’s the best thing for golf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In case anyone had forgotten how dominant he has been this season, Scottie Scheffler wasted little time reminding them Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club. The world’s top-ranked player returned from a three-week absence, drove his tee shot down the right side of the No. 1 fairway, then launched a ball 167 yards to the green, where it bounced once and dropped into the bottom of the cup for an eagle.

As the gallery roared at the 106th PGA Championship, Scheffler slapped hands with his caddie Ted Scott. A slight smirk crept across his face, as if to say, “Can you believe it?” Only there’s no reason to not believe it when it comes to Scheffler, whose dominance has been so complete since March that the story can be told without saying a word. Just listen to the pauses and sighs that precede most of the comments when opponents are asked about his play.

Scottie Scheffler finishes his first round with a 4-under 67.

It is the sixth time Scheffler has gained five-plus shots on the field tee-to-green in a major championship round since the beginning of 2022.

No other player in that span has more than three such rounds.

Rahm rallies, shoots 1-under-par

Jon Rahm today:

First 12 holes: 3 over, -2.50 strokes gained putting.

Last six holes: 4 under, +1.14 strokes gained putting.

Rahm finishes with a 1-under 70.

Tom Kim shoots 66

Tom Kim (66 today, age 21) is the youngest player to begin a PGA Championship with 66 or better since Sergio Garcia opened with 66 in 1999 at age 19.

Scheffler birdies 15

After a three-putt bogey on the par-3 14th, Scottie Scheffler responds with a birdie on 15.

The champions know how to follow up bogeys with birdies.

Scheffler is 4-under-par with three holes to play.

Tom Hoge shoots 66

Eight birdies today for Tom Hoge

His previous career-high in a major championship round was just five.

Currently leading the field in average proximity to the hole.

Scheffler 3-putt bogey on 14

Scottie at 3-under-par

After birdieing No. 13, Scottie Scheffler with a three-putt bogey on the 14th.

Scheffler falls back to 3-under-par, six back of leader Xander Schauffele.

Tom Kim in the mix

One year ago at the PGA Championship, Tom Kim famously fell into a muddy creek at Oak Hill, becoming one of the buzzy moments of the major.

One year later, Kim is in the mix near the top of the leaderboard at Valhalla.

Kim is 5-under-par through 13 holes, having one of the rounds of the day in the afternoon wave.

Golfers under par at the PGA Championship

There are currently 64 players under par at Valhalla Golf Club.

The most players under par after round one of the PGA Championship is 60 (2006 at Medinah).

Wyndham Clark responds after an opening bogey

After bogeying his first hole of the PGA Championship, Wyndham Clark responded with birdies on holes 4, 7 and 8.

Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, is with a plethora of golfers at 2-under-par.

Brian Harman's relief on No. 7

This type of relief being awarded to any PGA Tour player, much less in a major, is just baffling to me. I just don’t buy that the cart path was in play at all. And it slowed down what is already a slow group, as Harman hesitated over the initial lie and then brought in a rules official.

On a side note, perfect touch for ESPN production to drop a “PGA Jr. League” graphic onto the screen. Because nothing will get kids into this game quite like a grown man dropping a ball from his knee.

Thomas Detry 4 under through 9

Among the golfers in the afternoon wave, Thomas Detry is having a stellar start.

Playing the back side first, Detry is 4 under through his first nine holes, which includes birdies at 17 and 18.

Detry is five off the lead making the turn.

McIlroy keeping it tight (-lipped)

McIlroy keeping it tight (-lipped)

Rory McIlroy, a man known for being physically incapable of not giving his thoughts on things, has turned questions that even so much as acknowledge outside issues into non-answers.

💬 "I'm ready to play this week."

💬 "It's always nice to be inside the ropes."

💬 "Happy to be here."

It's already a long way back

That is just an absolutely disastrous beginning for Jon Rahm, who as you've seen is 4-over through six holes.

The 2023 Masters champion and 2021 U.S. Open winner has bogeyed 2, 4, 5 and 6. Keep in mind that while three of the four are playing over par today, the par-4 4th has a 3.84 scoring average and is a definite birdie opportunity.

Even if it's a difficult opening stretch, to drop strokes on all four just cannot be done if you are to make any sort of run at this thing.

Right now Rahm is tied for 141st out of 156 people in the field, knotted up with names like Ryan van Velzen and Takumi Kanaya.

T142: Jon RAHM (+4) +4 thru 6

Goodness me, what a horrible day it's been already for Jon Rahm.

The Spaniard is on a run of three consecutive bogeys and has actually dropped shots at four of his first six holes.

The opportunities are there to claw the shots back - but only if you're in the form to take them.

Xander Schauffele leads the PGA Championship. But can he finish the job?

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This didn’t change your mind at all, did it? You knew Xander Schauffele would be here. You knew he’d play Round 1 at the PGA Championship well. Because when you’re a golf-playing robot, when there’s no difference in your mind between Thursday and Sunday, there’s zero doubt you’ll be right in the mix at a major.

This is why Schauffele does deserve your respect, why he’s been the second-best golfer in the world on paper. Schauffele does not have bad weeks. He hasn’t finished outside the top 25 since February. He hasn’t been outside the top 20 in a major since April 2022. The only person with more top-10s than Schauffele (8) is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (9). And Thursday at Valhalla, Schauffele shot a course-record 62 to remind everyone of what Schauffele really is: A great golfer.

Yet none of it means a damn thing to you, does it?

It won’t until he does it on Sunday. No matter how many times you’re told how great Schauffele is, how consistent he is or how many times he’s finished toward the top of the FedEx Cup standings, you won’t treat him like one of the best golfers of his era until you see him on a Sunday, on the biggest stages, staring down his peers and holding on for a win.

Read more about Schauffele's round here .

Xander Schauffele leads the PGA Championship. But can he finish the job?

Scheffler drops a shot

After a 3-under-par start, Scottie Scheffler bogeys the par-4 5th hole after finding the right greenside bunker.

Scheffler is 2 under for the tournament, seven back of leader Xander Schauffele.
