SNL ’s Brutally Honest Tour Guide Wants to Temper Vacation Expectations for You

Portrait of Devon Ivie

We didn’t think we’d be getting four free minutes of therapy when clicking on this Adam Sandler sketch , but, well, here we are, and we have a lot to think about with our (nonrefundable, ugh ) summer plans. Word to the wise: Are you trying to travel away from your problems? Are you mentally in a place to travel at all? Sandler’s tour guide, pissed at the occasional negative review of his Italian adventures, has some words of wisdom you need to swallow. “If you’re sad now, you might still feel sad there,” he explains. “If you were sad where you are, and then you get on a plane to Italy, you in Italy will be the same sad you from before, just in a new place.” He just wants to be very clear what these tours can and can’t do for you, okay? “It cannot fix deeper issues, like how you behave in group settings or your general baseline mood. That’s a job for incremental lifestyle changes sustained over time,” he adds. “This may sound rude, but I’m trying to temper expectations.” All of a sudden, a Paddington 2 rewatch sounds way better than a Venice day trip.

A message from Steve Perillo:

If you’re sad where you are and then you get on a plane to Italy, the sad you in Italy will be the same sad you from before, just in a new place. Does that make sense? – Joe Romano

Joe knows what he is talking about. How do I know? Joe is me! Let me explain.

I woke up on Sunday morning to a flurry of texts and voicemails. No, I had no idea that Adam Sandler would be playing me on Saturday Night Live , or actually playing my alter-ego “Joe Romano,” a guy from NJ with a beard whose family has run Italy tours for “two generations” mostly to folks”from Long Island and Jersey.”

Haven’t seen it? Watch the skit

The whole thing was spooky. It was like Adam Sandler read my mind.

Joe says, “There’s a lot a vacation can do: help you unwind, see some different looking squirrels.” I’m always talking about how Italian squirrels look different – they are more red!

Many thanks to Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live for the thrill of a lifetime.

You can see the REAL Perillo TV commercial here:

And my friends, if you can accept the fact that I can’t change the “sad you”, I’d love to invite you on a real PERILLO (not Romano) Tour of Italy .

We take care of everything for you – stay in lovely, centrally located hotels, see the sites with the best tour guides in all the land, eat the food that Italy is known for the world over and experience a particular kind of magic – that hopefully won’t make you sad!

I’ve spent years personally refining them and picking out only the best of the best from the restaurants to the vineyards we visit. If you need help figuring out the best our Italy tours for you, give us a call at 800-431-1515.

Adam Sandler on ‘SNL’: 3 Sketches You Have to See

By Ryan McGee

There are times in which Saturday Night Live ’s reliance on audience nostalgia works against it. This often happens when it smothers the fire of the existing cast in favor of bringing back old cast members to generate cheap heat. It’s not unlike the WWE bringing out an old star to defeat a rising one: Instead of elevating the future of the business, it ends up doing long-term damage to him or her.

With Adam Sandler returning to SNL , however, the show got a unique chance to honor its past while also giving prime comedic real estate to its existing cast. While Sandler primarily works best in a solo setting (as evidenced by the clips below), this episode nevertheless featured continuity with the past rather than a negation of the present. The lasting power of his era of SNL comes from the enduring friendships it created, and it demonstrates how much we care about the Not Ready For Primetime Players as people, not just performers. We don’t know these people, but we certainly feel like we do, and that more than SNL as an institution is why so many of us have watched as long as we have.

Without diving any deeper into the schmaltz, let’s look at the sketches people will be talking about until Emma Thompson hosts next week.

  Weekend Update: Opera Man Returns

Look: Opera Man is a dumb character, but like so many Sandler inventions, it’s so knowingly dumb that it somehow turns smart. Sandler’s gift is never pretending like he’s above the material he performs, which grants him a lot of good will. There are two levels happening at all times with Opera Man and his cavalcade of other “Weekend Update” appearances: there’s the content, and there’s the simultaneous meta-commentary ABOUT the content. The beats in between in verse demonstrate this, as he almost always finishes with a look that says, “I don’t know why this works either, but let’s just roll with it together.”

Weirdly enough, the short, sing-songy nature of Opera Man yielded some of SNL ’s best political jokes in some time. It’s no accident that the show overtly ignored a political cold open this week in favor of a Game Of Thrones /Avengers mashup and put its ideas here. Opera Man’s constraints forces the show to deliver its punchlines in the most succinct manner, taking a six-minute concept and condensing it into six seconds. As such, they land much more effectively, and probably will have more legs because of it. A short verse about the Democratic candidates distills the entire race into eight lines, and it shows more insight than a dozen cold opens. Sandler had dozens of characters he could have pulled out of mothballs in this slot, but he and SNL chose wisely in bringing this one back.

Adam Sandler’s “I Was Fired” Monologue

The odds of Sandler not doing a musical-infused monologue were so low that Las Vegas refused to place odds on it. But even if this was inevitable, it ended up still being delightful. The sheer power of seeing Sandler back in Studio 8H could have been enough. Having a simple ditty would have been enough. Instead, this turned into a succinct way of summing up the past and paving the way for an episode to stand on its own rather than be a ninety-minute trip down memory lane.

Sandler’s contentious history with this show after his departure is well-documented, but having it laid out here gave Sandler autonomy while also allowing SNL to own up to its decision to fire him. No single person is bigger than the show (save Lorne Michaels, without whom the show should probably end next time around, but that’s another essay for another time), but it’s impossible to overstate just how popular Sandler was during his run on the program. The fact that he has had such a lucrative career allows him to brag about that during the monologue, and the fact the SNL is still around to provide a platform for that brag says a lot about it as well. This was a win-win that also managed to sneak in great cameos from Chris Rock and Pete Davidson, the latter of whom exploited his off-camera shenanigans in the most succinct, potent way all season. The Springsteen-esque way this song ended marked a triumphant return for one of the show’s most popular stars.

Chris Farley Song

Even if you’ve already seen Sandler perform this on his Netflix special 100% Fresh , there’s something undeniably powerful about seeing him sing it live in Studio 8H. The show put this in the only slot it could — the final one — since there wasn’t a dry eye in the house once Sandler had finished. It marked an elegant finish to an episode that balanced the old and the new quite well, and demonstrated the lasting power this show has.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying SNL used to be better, and how nothing currently compares to that which was. The not-so-hidden secret is the show has always more or less been what it is now, which is to say an inconsistent show that is always walking the tightrope between success and outright disaster. We remember the highlights and forget the duds, which creates the false illusion that past seasons had nothing BUT highlights. That’s not a slight on the show, which is built on a risky foundation upon which anything successful is fairly miraculous.

Both Chris Farley and Adam Sandler are part of that wonderfully complicated tapestry. Their era was one defined by the power of personality rather than character-driven sketches, with a lot of sketches residing on the overwhelming presence of one person rather than deriving its power from a collective energy. The cast SNL brought in immediately after cleaning house between Seasons 20 and 21 reflected the waning ratings power of that approach. That reality didn’t make it into Sandler’s musical monologue, but that doesn’t mean people still don’t quote Chris Farley highlights decades later. The fact that Farley didn’t hit the bullseye each time doesn’t make his overall batting average any less remarkable. Sandler’s song focuses on these successes, and the tears the song evokes remind us how lucky we are this man helped create those singular moments for us.

In case you missed it, Adam Sandler and “ Saturday Night Live ” have a bit of history. Sandler, of course, goes more into detail about this in his monologue, but he was a cast member on the show (from 1990-1995, having started when he was 23 years old). 24 years later, though, Sandler has never hosted “SNL” — until now, that is. It’s certainly one of the more fascinating first-time hosting gigs of this season (although, it’s still quite odd Liev Schreiber hadn’t hosted until this season).

Host: Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler gets musical twice in this episode, and the first time — in his opening monologue, where he also gets in a nice age joke about Norm Macdonald — is a quite funny explanation about why he “left” “SNL” despite it being the best time of his life. And while the same thing happened to his buddy Chris Rock, but they both seem to be doing fine now. (Not sure how fine Rock was doing when he joined “‘In Living Color'” and it got canceled three weeks later. He wasn’t even an official cast member.) The bit ends with Pete Davidson coming out to sing, only to be reminded he’s not been fired… but he doesn’t have to worry, it will surely happen soon enough.

(Strangely enough, besides this and the family reunion sketch, Davidson is barely anywhere to be found in this episode. It’s a really strange choice, considering how much he was compared to Sandler when he first joined the cast, but a stranger choice really is that he’s still even on the show. It’s the “woo” crowd—they love him and “woo” him like he’s a celebrity guest, not a cast member. Because he’s famous, not because he’s the most impressive member of the cast. This isn’t even a knock on him, he probably even agrees with this assessment.)

Related Stories ‘Dark Matter’ Review: Apple’s Sad Dad Sci-Fi Series Is Handsome but Shallow Dua Lipa Says She Bumped Into Parents ‘at the Club’ in ‘SNL’ Monologue: ‘They Love to Party’

While the cold open for this episode is, well, cold, the monologue officially starts things off right, and it seems possible that this will be the case of a former cast member bringing out the show’s A-game (and their own A-game, really). Unfortunately, that is not what happens over the course of this episode. Not even a little bit.

The thing about Adam Sandler is that he’s proven on more than one occasion that he’s more than a one-trick pony… but he prefers to stay in his one lane with one trick. And past, let’s say, 2004, that lane has produced a lot of really terrible movies that can easily make a person question if Sandler was ever funny and if his past movies were any good. Don’t worry, he definitely was very funny and those past movies — especially the “Happy Gilmore”/”Billy Madison”/”The Wedding Singer” trifecta — honestly still hold up. (Also, this is neither here nor there, but “Mr. Deeds” is underrated.) He’s also proven that, despite all the really terrible movies, he can come out with a new stand-up special in 2018 and show he’s still got it. So it’s not a lack of ability or a fact of losing it that is to blame: Again, he prefers to stay in his one lane. Especially when it’s a lane that can get him and his buddies vacations to exotic locations to shoot said really terrible movies.

But that one lane on a sketch show can make for an extremely concentrated bit of terrible, and that’s what happens here, unfortunately. Nostalgia isn’t inherently bad, but when that’s really all there is, with the combination of the things not playing off of nostalgia just being plain bad, then there’s actually nothing of substance. Or at least, very little of substance.

On a positive note: “SNL” came back from a month break and decided to do a butt-plug pre-tape sketch. It’s crude and immature but… in a good way? That’s really more than can be said for a lot of this episode. It’s Beck Bennett’s reactions to the very, very obvious in this sketch that really sell it.

Best Sketch(es) of The Night: “Sandler Family Reunion” & “Romano Tours”

If there’s one thing to appreciate about Adam Sandler, it’s that he doesn’t have a complex about channeling, or other people channeling, his greatest hits. So that’s how you get a sketch like “Sandler Family Reunion.” Yes, “SNL” has done this sketch before with hosts like Jim Carrey and Christopher Walken . But like the audition sketches that serve as impression showcases (and by the way, do that far better than the “Celebrity Family Feud” sketches, yet somehow are less frequent) they kill — and they highlight the cast’s actual impression strengths. Pete Davidson’s Nicky (“Little Nicky”) and Melissa Villaseñor’s Bobby Boucher (“The Waterboy”) are the actual MVPs, but everyone pretty much nails this sketch. Especially Kenan Thompson as a man who clearly married into the family and doesn’t quite get the “invisible clarinet thing” they’re all doing. Plus, there are the cameos of Jimmy Fallon and Kristen Wiig (who plays Sandler’s/Carrie White’s mother, due to Sandler’s appropriately titled debut album, “They’re All Gonna Laugh At You!”)

Just one nitpick: Shawn Mendes is a talented singer-songwriter , but his few dalliances with acting have left a lot to be desired. His ‘Big Daddy’-era Sandler impression is only recognizable because of the final “Happy Meal” outburst. And it’s still not good.

No doubt a lot of people are going to feel seen after the Romano Tours, Italian vacation sketch. It’s already an okay sketch when it’s just about the tour (“See Venice, the city of wetness.”), but it’s a great sketch once it sets its sights on anyone who’s displeased about the tour and goes into the entire psychosis of vacation emotions. “Sad You” going on vacation leading to the “Same Sad You” is inspired, even before the breakdown of what the vacation “Can” and “Cannot” do. And that’s before he zeroes in on the characters within the sketch. Poor Kenan.

Worst Sketch(es) of The Night: “Family Feud Cold Open,” “War Zone Reporter,” & “Holes”

Seeing the C-Span bumper to open the episode immediately brought forth a familiar sense of dread about whatever “impressions” the show would force on A-list celebrities to welcome the show back. So the bait and switch of a “Celebrity Family Feud” sketch is a much-appreciated one… until you realize it’s truly the sketch equivalent of a hack impressionist’s “…and I think, it would go a little something like this.”

The highlight of the cold open is Leslie Jones’ Groot, simply because the sketch leans into the fact that this is just Leslie Jones playing Groot for the sketch, and it never veers away from that. Alex Moffat’s Thor/Chris Hemsworth has never been anything more than just a generic Australian accent, and that doesn’t change here. Seriously, he sounds nothing like Chris Hemsworth. (Maybe he sounds like Liam, but does anyone actually know what Liam Hemsworth sounds like? Has he ever spoken outside of movies, where he does American accents all the time?) The “joke” with Beck Bennett’s Thanos is that he’s a roid monster, but honestly, it’s hard not to think about the fact he looks like a purple Fat Bastard. A purple Fat Bastard who is also a roid monster. And after all these years, you would think with Kate McKinnon’s Brienne they’d give her lifts to complete the character but nope. She could honestly be playing Tilda Swinton in this sketch and you wouldn’t know the difference.

In the episode proper, here are the four biggest knocks on the “War Zone Reporter” sketch:

  • There is not a single laugh in this sketch until it’s just about at the minute mark. Talk about a slow set-up. (In its defense, it ultimately has more laughs than the “Holes” sketch, which might actually have a negative amount of laughs.)
  • And it’s a slow set-up to get to a Snapchat filter sketch on “SNL” (as opposed to a reboot of Nickelodeon’s “All That”).
  • There’s a part where Mikey Day’s character notes that his phone screen cracked, and he can’t see a thing, so he’s actually unaware of the filters. That part of the premise is absolutely blown up once Sandler’s character gets involved, as he intentionally plays with and changes the filters.
  • Yes, people want to hear Sandler do voices. There’s an entire sketch in this episode dedicated to that. But maybe don’t have him play a Libyan in 2019. Especially on a show where it took way too many years to cast enough black people to have them play multiple, real black people in one sketch.

Unsurprisingly, with Adam Sandler as the host, the episode is very bro-y. Not in the sophisticated frat bro way Weekend Update is — which is so flat this week it’s not worth mentioning outside of the Opera Man feature , as even Kate McKinnon’s Elizabeth Warren is a one-note folksy “joke”—but in that classic, beer-swigging frat boy way. That allows Beck Bennett (and, by extension, Kyle Mooney) to shine, but unfortunately, it’s not in their usual, weird but secretly genius way. Because there is nothing genius about “Hole (Clothes)” sketch.

In fact, more so than their actual ‘90s sitcom sketches, this actually feels like it could’ve aired during the Sandler era of “SNL,” but not in a good way. There are dozens of sketches from Bennett and Mooney that have suggested they should be the dynamic duo of “SNL” instead of Mikey Day and Alex Moffat (as long as “SNL” can handle a truly weird dynamic duo) and this one is not that. How did “The Last Fry” get cut for time but not this?

Best Female Performer: Leslie Jones

This is for Groot and Chubbs.

Best Male Performer: Kenan Thompson

Kenan Thompson will forever have the best reactions of any cast member, and they come in handy during the latest “Last Call” Sheila (Kate McKinnon) sketch. This turns into a ménage à trois between Sheila, Sandler’s character, and a returning Wiig (playing Sandler’s wife) and while honestly the weakest of this series of sketches, at least there’s Kenan Thompson with a stick of dynamite in his mouth. (Also, just noting for this sketch, the dread of McKinnon tonguing Sandler is assuaged once Wiig gets there, and unsurprisingly, McKinnon/Wiig really go at it. There is definitely licking between McKinnon/Sandler, but it is not the same. This is a weird thing to analyze.)

Final Thoughts

This is exactly the type of episode that the “‘SNL’ used to be good” crowd (“during my formative years” being silent but implied) will jump all over to rip apart. This ignores the fact that this episode is absolutely as juvenile and unfunny as the worst episodes of that era, when “‘SNL’ used to be good,” that they’ve conveniently erased from their minds. This is because their memories are filled with “Best Of” compilations or the hour-abridged versions of the show that cut out the worst (or, unfortunately, most music rights-related) sketches.

This is a bad episode, but that’s not because things were so much better back in the day: It’s because it tries to channel the irreverent, childish humor of back in the day, and it only shines a light on how lame that is. Yes, Sandler, Farley, Spade, and Rock all came up together on “SNL.” But you know who else came up with them? Rob fricken Schneider. And he’s still reaping all the benefits. (That’s a reference to “The Wedding Singer” , by the way, so this isn’t a matter of thinking Adam Sandler has never had anything to offer.)

Nostalgia can’t do all the work. In Sandler’s musical tribute to Chris Farley, the crowd barely woos (there are a few) when he suggests an alternate reality where he’d be part of the cast of “Grown-Ups 3.” It’s the only weak point in an otherwise extremely earnest and touching performance. Adam Sandler’s beginning and ending to this episode are both absolutely great. Unfortunately, there’s the rest of the episode in between.

Saturday Night Live recap: Adam Sandler makes hosting debut, sings about being fired 24 years ago

Adam Sandler returned to the hallowed stage at NBC’s Studio 8H to make his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live , 24 years after he left the show as a cast member.

Sandler, who has since become one of SNL ‘s most successful alumni, was part of the “Bad Boys of SNL ” group alongside the likes of Chris Rock , Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows, David Spade, and of course, his frequent sketch collaborator, the late Chris Farley. Sandler’s most famous sketches included Canteen Boy, Opera Man, and Lunch Lady Land.

Steering clear of this week’s political scandals, SNL turned to the big pop culture moments instead, kicking off the show with a special edition of Family Feud : The Avengers vs. Game of Thrones . Kenan Thompson’s Steve Harvey (“I am Steve, of House Mustache”) hosted a lively contest between Team Avengers —Thor, Thanos, Okoye, and Leslie Jones as Groot (“Bitch, I’m Groot”) — and Team GoT , made up of Brienne, Tormund, Melisandre, and Bran.

Thompson kept the skit moving with timely quips, such as the past week’s debate over whether Game of Thrones ‘ epic battle episode “The Long Night” was too dark for some viewers — “You know it’s too dark when you can’t even see the white people in the show.”

Of course, it was Arya Stark who jumped in at the last minute to save the day for Team GoT .

Sandler took the stage to huge applause, saying, “I can’t believe I’m back at Saturday Night Live after all this time.” After some reminiscing about his time at the show (“I had some of the best years of my life here, I actually lost my virginity to a woman in this studio — I don’t kiss and tell but it was the Church Lady. She said I was special”), Sandler decided to sing a song that explained why he left the show: he was fired.

“I was fired, so sad to tell, well I never saw it coming, I got fired from SNL / Between seasons, I heard a nasty rumor that I was getting the sack, tried to call Lorne Michaels, but he never called me back / I guess NBC had enough of Crazy Spoon Head and the songs I sang on the news / Maybe they were sick of Canteen Boy, but I think they just hate the Jews.”

And of course, Sandler couldn’t sing about his firing without bringing up Farley: “I was fired, not rehired, well it made me sad and blue / I told my boy Chris Farley that I got fired, and he said, ‘Sandman, they fired my a– too.”

His former castmate Chris Rock then joined him on stage to sing a verse about his own firing, before Pete Davidson also came on for a quick cameo. But then Sandler stepped back in the spotlight to sing his final verse, delivering a sharp jab.

“Well, I was fired, I was fired, NBC said that I was done / Then I made of $4 billion at the box office, so I guess you could say I won.”

I think you might be right about that, Sandman.

The Sketches

Sandler Family Reunion: You can tell this is the sketch that the SNL cast was excited for this week as they came together to put their best Sandler character impressions to the test. Sandler, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, was surrounded at the Sander Family Reunion by his family members, all of whom seem quite familiar. Mikey Day and Kyle Mooney channeled Billy Madison as they give Sandler updates on their lives, Pete played a version of the quirky Little Nicky, Melissa Villaseñor was the awkward Bobby Boucher from The Waterboy , and Beck Bennett the harangued Robbie Hart from The Wedding Singer . “We were so happy to have cousin Adam here but watch out because you might end up in one of his movies,” Davidson’s Little Nicky said as Sandler replied, “Maybe I borrowed some stuff from you, but I did it out of love.”

Kristen Wiig also turned up as Sandler’s mother from The Waterboy , screeching, “They’re all going to laugh at you,” and Jimmy Fallon dropped in to do his own Sandler impression (the comedian’s a big Sandler fan) playing Papa Sandler, even leading the cast in a sing-a-long of Sandler’s famous “The Hanukkah Song.”

Joe Romano of Romano Tours: Sandler donned a tan suit and some slicked-back hair as Joe Romano of Romano Tours, touting “high-quality tours of Italy for people all over the world, but mostly from Long Island and Jersey.” But the point he kept hammering home was that a trip to even the most idyllic place “cannot change you.” “See Venice, the city of wetness, point and laugh at the Leaning Tower of Pisa… but I’d like to remind our customers, if you’re sad now, you might still feed sad there.”

Father-Son Erectile Dysfunction Commercial: Sandler and Beck Bennett had a heart-to-heart about erectile dysfunction on the front porch, as Sandler pulled out a new pill called Rectix to insert (where else?) anally, leading to jokes about butt plugs and awkward parent-children conversations about sexual performance. Aidy Bryant played the mother who informed her uncomfortable son that the pills were dishwasher safe, before Sandler said, “You know son, why don’t you borrow mine?”

Last Call: A greasy Sandler sat at the bar alongside McKinnon, getting a little flirty. While bartender Thompson watched the seedy pair get closer, an overly tanned Wiig popped up (quite literally from under the bar) and sidled up to McKinnon, introducing herself as Sandler’s wife (“God must have spent a little more time on you because there’s so many ideas going on here,” McKinnon said as she caressed Wiig’s face). “How should we start this little menage-a-troilette?” Sandler asked as the three then “freshened up” with Windex and engaged in a saliva-filled three-way makeout session as a disgusted Thompson watched on (“just get your gross on already”). “Since we’re all dogs, there’s only one thing to do — let’s Lady and the Tramp this sucker” McKinnon said as the three then threw spaghetti into the mix and things got even grosser — perhaps putting viewers off spaghetti forever (eh, who are we kidding? We love spaghetti).

Weekend Update — and the return of Opera Man

It’s been another stressful week in politics, so Michael Che and Colin Jost wasted no time getting down to business. Jost opened up Weekend Update with the news that Attorney General William Barr declined to testify before the House Judiciary Committee this week, saying, “I guess our country just doesn’t have rules anymore.” Che followed up with an update on the Mueller report, quipping, “Man, just steal the report — they found 30,000 of Hilary’s deleted emails.”

Kate McKinnon also turned up as Elizabeth Warren to talk about her student loan forgiveness plan (“I wish I could be forgiven for some of the things I did in college”), before laying into the other Democratic presidential candidates such as “Beto O’Dork” and Joe Biden, “the Amtrak masseuse,” with a quick dig at the current president, saying “impeachment is this guy’s middle name — that, and jacka–.”

Che and Jost got into a better rhythm as they then broke down some of the other headlines of the week, from the record viewership of last week’s Game of Thrones episode (“17 million viewers, all using the same 10 HBO Go passwords”) to a woman getting stung by more than 200 bees when a beehive blew onto her head, with Che commiserating that no one had been on hand to record the incident on video.

But it was the return of Sandler’s caped Opera Man that was the highlight this week. Opera Man took on Game of Thrones (“we can’t wait for the final show so we can cancel our HBO-oh”), the Kentucky Derby (“Winning horse is magnifioso, losing horse is delicioso”), NBA star James Harden’s eye-watering encounter with Draymond Green’s fingers (“Draymond poke him in eye-o”), and the Seth Rogen-Charlize Theron rom-com Long Shot (“pretty lady, goofy man, Opera Man no understand-o… where have I seen this before-o?” as a montage of Sandler’s movies appeared behind him). It should be noted that Rogen immediately tweeted his appreciation after Opera Man’s shout-out:

He then got into politics, quipping about the “70-year-old men” (Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden) and their presidential campaigns, Barr being a no-show in court (“check every single Wendy’s”), and digging into Trump (“Trumpa, dumpa, they afraid to impeach, I get to make-a the wall, and Putin makes me his beetch”).

Musical Guest: Shawn Mendes

The 20-year-old heartthrob — and his biceps — showed off his sultry live vocals on his catchy new bop “If I Can’t Have You,” a surefire contender for the pop song of the summer. He — and his biceps — later took to the piano for the second song, his melancholy ballad “In My Blood.” Mendes also had a role in the Sandler Family Reunion sketch, showing off his acting chops as well at Studio 8H. It’s looking pretty likely that the sky’s the limit for this multi-talented star.

Chris Farley Tribute

It’s impossible to think about Sandler’s time on SNL without thinking of Farley, and he put aside time at the end of the show to pay tribute to the late comedian, who died in 1997 from a drug overdose. Sandler penned an emotional tribute to Farley as part of his Netflix comedy special 100% Fresh , and played a version of the song on the SNL stage. Make sure you have some tissues handy as you’re bound to get teary as Sandler sings about his friend and how hard it was to say goodbye to him.

Sandler closed out the show by saying, “I can’t tell you, that really felt amazing. To my wife and kids, I’m glad you got to witness that because I loved it here.”

Emma Thompson will make her hosting debut on May 11, with the Jonas Brothers as musical guest.

Adam Richard Sandler (born September 9, 1966) is an American comedian, actor, screenwriter, producer, singer, and musician. Primarily a comedic leading actor in film and television, his accolades, include nominations for three Grammy Awards, five Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In 2023, Sandler was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Sandler was a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1995. He went on to star in Hollywood films that cumulatively grossed over $2 billion worldwide. Sandler had an estimated net worth of $420 million in 2020, and signed a new four-movie deal with Netflix worth over $250 million.

Sandler's comedic roles include Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996), The Waterboy (1998), The Wedding Singer (1998), Big Daddy (1999), Mr. Deeds (2002), 50 First Dates (2004), The Longest Yard (2005), Click (2006), Grown Ups (2010), Just Go with It (2011), Grown Ups 2 (2013), Blended (2014), Murder Mystery (2019) and Hubie Halloween (2020). He also voiced Davey, Whitey, and Eleanore in Eight Crazy Nights (2002) and Dracula in the first three films of the Hotel Transylvania franchise (2012–2018).

Several Sandler comedies, such as Jack and Jill (2011), have been panned, resulting in nine Golden Raspberry Awards and 37 Raspberry Award nominations, more than any actor except Sylvester Stallone. However, Sandler has also received acclaim for his leading roles in comedy-drama films including Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Mike Binder's Reign Over Me (2007), Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories (2017), the Safdie brothers' Uncut Gems (2019), and Jeremiah Zagar's Hustle (2022), with the latter three ranked as major career highlights.

While performing on stage in Los Angeles, Dennis Miller caught his act and recommended Sandler to SNL producer Lorne Michaels in 1990 , and while he auditioned to be in the cast, he was ultimately initially hired as a writer. He made his first onscreen appearance on December 8, 1990 , during the "Sabra Network Sketch", and became on official featured player on February 9, 1991 . After spending a few seasons as a featured player and writer, Sandler became a full-fledged member of the cast at the start of the 1993-94 season.

Characters like Cajun Man , Opera Man , and his own songs ("The Chanukah Song") made him an instant fan favorite. Due to low ratings, and then-NBC West Coast President Don Ohlmeyer having a different sense of humor, Sandler was released from SNL in 1995 , at the end of the show's 20th season. Despite that, Sandler's fame and popularity continued to rise when he left SNL to pursue a film career. Though not always loved by critics, movies like "Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore," and "Big Daddy" connected with audiences, making Sandler one of the top paid comic actor/writers working in Hollywood.

Despite being let go from the show, he made two cameos on the show. On February 17, 1996 during the Weekend Update segment, and on November 16, 2002 during the Cold Open. Other than those two cameoes, and appearances at the 25th and 40th anniversary shows, Sandler never hosted the show until May 4, 2019 . Both him and Dan Aykroyd tie the record of the longest gap between leaving the show as a cast member and returning as a host. Both hosted the show for the first time nine days shy of 24 years from last appearance as cast. However, both made appearances on the show during the gap.

Sandler then made two cameo appearances during the first two SNL at Home episodes, he cameoed on the April 11, 2020 episode, during the Hal Willner tribute, and in the next episode on April 25, 2020 episode in the "Stuck in the House" music sketch.

After last appearing as a cast member in 1995, years have passed since Adam Sandler has graced the  Saturday Night Live stage. Preparing to make his return and host the sketch series for the first time this week — Shawn Mendes will serve as the musical guest — Sandler has already made a walk down memory lane to recall his memorable sketches from his time on the late-night series in the  official promo ahead of his hosting gig.

Though the comedian has cultivated fame from films such as Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer , Sandler's slew of notorious sketches are still recognized as some of Sandler's most recognized work and the best in SNL history. Whether hosting his own show about his ex-girlfriend or singing an original song about Hanukkah, Sandler has starred in sketches that continue to be favorited by SNL cast members to this day.

As fans anticipate the sketches Sandler will perform or possibly revive for his hosting gig,  The Hollywood Reporter takes a look at 10 of the comedian’s most memorable SNL sketches.

Related Stories

'saturday night live': all the season 44 hosts and musical guests, "the hanukkah song".

To once again commemorate a holiday, Sandler penned an original song dedicated to Hanukkah. "When I was a kid, this time a year always made me feel a little left out because, in school, there were so many Christmas songs and all us Jewish kids had was 'Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel,' " he said, before singing his original song for "Jewish kids to sing." "Put on your yarmulke; Here comes Hanukkah;" Sandler sang on his guitar, with other fun lyrics including, "When you feel like the only kid in town without a Christmas tree; Here's a list of people who are Jewish, just like you and me… Paul Newman's half Jewish; Goldie Hawn's half too; Put them together; What a fine-lookin' Jew!" In later seasons, Sandler would then perform updated versions of his popular song, with Rob Schneider and a choir even joining him for one performance .

"The Denise Show"

In the 1993 sketch, Sandler's heartbroken character Brian hosted a show to mourn the loss of his relationship with Denise (Shannen Doherty). Prior to taking calls, Sandler attempts to hide his pain when describing his breakup: "She ripped open my chest and pulled out my heart, but it's fine." Callers ask Sandler's Brian how he's doing, and despite saying he's "fine," the comedian asks if anyone knows the whereabouts of Denise. "Have you seen her? Has she said anything about me?" Later in the sketch, Sandler's Brian makes a phone call to Denise only to hang up on her. "That was great," he said. Doherty's Denise also shows up to express her annoyance with her ex-boyfriend.

"Opera Man"

Sandler's portrayal of Opera Man became a fan favorite character on the variety sketch series. Always dressed in a tuxedo, cape and donning a wig, Sandler delivered special performances in which he sang about various topics in a faux operatic voice. Sketches included singing about a lottery ticket (comical lyrics include: "Dio in heaveno, per favor, un more matcho, be so greato, Opera man promise no more masterbato."), singing about then Vice President Al Gore in the " Weekend Update " and even joining forces with Jon Lovitz , who played Opera Man's brother, for a duet.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta4sbXme0z0]

"Lunch Lady Land"

In signature Sandler fashion, the comedian sang a tune about an unlikely hero for students during a now-famous 1994 sketch. Sandler said of the song: "This is a song about the high school experience through the eyes through the person more than anyone else puts young people on the right path. I’m not talking about the teachers… coaches… guidance counselors. I’m talking about the person we all call the lunch lady." During Sandler's quirky tune about a lunch lady, Chris Farley donned a hairnet, gloves and appropriate attire while dancing around the stage as Sandler sang on the guitar.

During SNL 's 20th season, a new show starring hosts Hank and Beverly Gelfand (Sandler, Chris Farley) called  "Zagat's," was introduced. The two characters explain that they are celebrating their 35th anniversary and Beverly (Farley) wants to find a restaurant to dine in, but Hank can't help but express his misery for being married. "My father said 'get married.' He should rot in his grave," Sandler's Hank says at one point, with other negative comments including "Day and night she talks, each word more useless than the next" and "Give me cancer now God!" At one point, Hank's sister-in-law (David Duchovny) makes a visit to gift the couple a restaurant guide. "I'm in the middle of a moron sandwich," Sandler's Hank yells, as Beverly and her sister continue to name possible restaurants to visit. Done being involved with the conversation, Sandler's Hank takes a bottle of sleeping pills which causes him to collapse on the floor. Instead of helping him, Beverly and her sister continue reading the restaurant guide.

"Red Hooded Sweatshirt"

With "violence and hatred in the world," Sandler penned another holiday tune about Valentine's Day to lighten the mood. But instead of singing about falling in love, the comedian directed his attention to "the nicest, purest thing in the world" — his red hooded sweatshirt gifted from his mom. Throughout the song, Sandler sang about the memories he's created with his treasured sweatshirt and qualities he loves about it. Fun lyrics included: "I like to rest my hands in your kangaroo pouch, it makes them feel comfy like a big soft couch" and "I don't care if the weather's no good; I say 'see you later rain' as I pull up my hood." Per tradition, Kevin Nealon joined along to sing the catchy tune.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81WwGlbVcBg]

"Pepper Boy"

In a sketch aired during SNL 's 20th season, the comedian took on the role of an incompetent apprentice named Carlo who struggled to learn the art of grinding pepper from his superior Marco (Dana Carvey) while working in an Italian restaurant. Though Carvey's Marco instructed Carlo that he must always approach each table and ask guests questions such as, "Fresh pepper?" and "Say when," Marco always lets his nerves get the best of him, even putting pepper in a guest's chocolate mousse. At one point Carvey''s Marco waiter slaps him across the face: "Not everybody want the pepper! There are rules! This is the art of the pepper boy. Don't let it die with me." After finally achieving the technique, Carlo and Marco are surprised when their boss tells them that every table will now have electronic pepper grinders, so they're fired. The sketch series also featured Janeane Garofalo, Tim Meadows, Chris Elliott, Chris Farley, Michael McKean as dinner guests.

"Bobby Watches Grandma"

During SNL 's 18th season, Sandler took on the comical role of a difficult grandma. When Joey (Michel Keaton) wants to spend some time alone with a date (Julia Sweeney) he brought home, Keaton's Joey asks his brother Bobby (Chris Farley) to look after their Grandma (Sandler), only Bobby was unaware of what he would have to actually endure. "Where's Joey? I need him. I need Joey. I want Joey," Sandler's Grandma immediately asks, as he then screams for Joey to return. Despite Joey instructing Bobby to keep Grandma quiet as he spends time with his guest, Sandler's Grandma consistently complains about Bobby and yells. Sandler's Grandma then makes comical demands for Bobby, asking him to fluff her pillows and retrieving the platter on the top shelf.  At one point, Grandma receives a visit from a solicitor (Rob Schneider) and is informed that she has been selected to be included in a "who's who volume of retirees." After she is told that she can preorder the copy for $500, Grandma begins giving away the money to which Bobby yells for her to stop. Later on, Joey continues to beat up Joey for being mean to their Grandma.

"Halloween Costume Ideas"

Hoping to alleviate the stress of finding the perfect Halloween costume without spending a lot of money, Sandler advised the audience on how to create a costume while on a budget during a "Weekend Update" segment. "If you want an original, scary Halloween costume use your imagination. What's wrong with just using your face?" Sandler said, as he then exemplified various costume ideas including "Squishy Man" (the costume consisted of squeezing his cheeks together with his hands) and "G Force Man" (He then pressed his cheeks outward). Sandler also performed the "Crazy No Arms Man" costume where he hid his arm in his shirt and acted like a grumpy man ("I've got one arm and I'm crazy," he yelled.), "Crazy Hand Coming Out of the Neck Guy," "Crazy No Arm Woman," among others. Nealon also joined in on the fun, quipping that he could be "Cup Man," where he could simply place a cup atop his head. Sandler would go on to provide more costume ideas in later segments dubbed "Adam Sandler on More Halloween Costumes" and "Adam Sandler on Even More Halloween Costumes."

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0HpP8BA1DQ]

"Thanksgiving Song"

To celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, Sandler composed and penned an original tune to perform during the "Weekend Update" segment. With a guitar in hand, the comedian sang along to a quirky song that he hopes would entertain and move the audience. Lyrics included: "Love to eat turkey cause it's good, love to eat turkey like a good boy should" and "A turkey for you, a turkey for me, let's eat turkey in a big brown shoe." Later on, Kevin Nealon joined Sandler to sing a duet of the comical holiday song. In the following season, Sandler revisited the song, only to perform it while portraying  Bruce Springsteen.

Adam Sandler returns to 'SNL' after 24 years with Opera Man and ode to Chris Farley

Saturday Night Live - Season 44

Comedian and filmmaker Adam Sandler returned to to the stage that launched his career, NBC's Studio 8H, to host "Saturday Night Live" after parting ways with the show nearly 25 years ago.

Although Sandler has become a hit-movie maker both as a star and producer with his Happy Madison Productions, he said during his opening monologue that people often ask him why he ever left "SNL," and he sang a song to answer the question.

"I was fired," he sang.

Comedian Chris Rock joined and answered the same question the same way: "I was fired."

🎶 I WAS FIRED 🎶 🎶 I WAS FIRED 🎶 – @AdamSandler pic.twitter.com/JcwOfdYhhq — Saturday Night Live - SNL (@nbcsnl) May 5, 2019

Current cast member Pete Davidson, who's seen more headlines for his love life and mental health than for his performance on the show, tried to join in, but Sandler informed him he has not, in fact, been fired.

"I wasn’t ... how’s that even possible?" Davidson said.

"I don’t know," Sandler said. "Be patient, 'cause it’s coming soon."

Sandler wrapped up the segment explaining why he was back.

"NBC said that I was done," he sang. "Then I made over four billion at the box office, so you could say I won."

"SNL" avoided playing off the headlines for its cold open, but news segment "Weekend Update" offered a comedic summary of political events, including a visit from presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, played by Kate McKinnon.

Adam Sandler on "Saturday Night Live."

She called the Democratic field of candidates a "friggin' clown car" and criticized her colleagues in Congress for so far failing to move forward with impeachment of President Donald Trump.

"It's like the Titanic is sinking and we are politely waiting in line for the bathroom," she said.

Sandler, who started as a writer on "SNL" in 1990 and left as a cast member in 1995, brought his character Opera Man to "Weekend Update." He had some lines for Attorney General William Barr, who did not show up Thursday for a day of testimony before the House Judiciary Committee.

"Where did Barr go?" Sandler sang. "He did not show. Check every single Wendy’s."

Pop star Shawn Mendes was the night's musical guest. Former cast member Kristen Wiig also stopped by to perform in a few sketches.

At the end of the show, Sandler sang an ode to comedian Chris Farley, a fellow "SNL" cast member who died in 1997 of an accidental drug overdose.

“On Saturday night my man would always deliver,” Sandler sang, strumming a guitar. “Whether he was the Bumblebee Girl or livin’ in a van down by the river.”

“Give it up for the great Chris Farley.”

'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: The Zagat's Guide Breaks Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler is perhaps one of Saturday Night Live ’s most successful alums, with hit movies like Billy Madison , The Wedding Singer , and Grown Ups . And he’s got a new movie out this weekend, Pixels (whether that will kill or flop at the box office remains to be seen). So, that’s all the excuse we needed to re-watch some of his best sketches in our SNL archive .

Sandler’s had plenty of classic bits, featuring his silly songs to “Weekend Update” characters, but we decided to highlight this one because it’s so funny, it even made him laugh during the sketch !

The sketch, from 1995, is “Zagat’s Restaurant Guide Commentary” and also features the late Chris Farley. Farley plays Bev, while Sandler is her husband, Hank. Bev is reading from the famous guide, while Hank can barely hide his boredom.

But Farley is so good as inane housewife Bev that Sandler can barely hide his laughter. As Bev croons that a steakhouse’s “sensual setting will set the mood for any romantic rendezvous” and rubs her husband’s leg, Sandler comes close to the edge. Breaking is a time-honored SNL tradition, one that even the best players couldn’t avoid.

Teams have made their big splashes in free agency and made their draft picks, it's time for you to do the same. It's fantasy football mock draft time. Adam Sandler announces brand new "I Missed You" tour to close out 2023

Sandler is finishing 2023 by heading back out on the road for a series of stand-up shows.

Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler misses you— or so he says . The actor, producer, and stand-up is apparently leaning hard into that latter part of his career as 2023 rolls along, having announced today that he’s about to embark on a brand new stand-up tour, titled, appropriately, I Missed You . Per Deadline , Sandler will embark on the tour in Vancouver, Canada on October 12, before heading Stateside for another 24 shows that will last him through the end of the year.

Although he continues to put out movies with Netflix-pleasing regularity—most recently You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah and Murder Mystery 2 , both out in 2023—Sandler has also been a regular live draw for almost a decade at this point, after getting seriously back into concert performances back in 2016. In fact, Sandler just got done performing a set of shows billed as “Adam Sandler LIVE,” which does raise the question: Can he really miss us when he’s never actually left?

Sandler famously got his start as a stand-up, having been spotted by Saturday Night Live alum Dennis Miller and recommended as a writer for the show back in the 1990s. (And although the program’s infamously rigorous schedule precluded much touring during that period, his first comedy album, the skit and song-based They’re All Gonna Laugh At You , went double platinum with a quickness.)

Interestingly, the press materials for the kick-off show in Vancouver mention that Sandler will be accompanied by a “surprise guest”; since he already regularly tours with his famous friends when he does shows like these—notably Rob Schneider and Kevin James—it’s not clear who would qualify for “surprise status” at this point. (Although we did hear that one of his old regular co-stars had some openings on her schedule recently .)

When you think of some of the funniest actors of the last several decades, one that always comes to mind, no matter what, is Adam Sandler. Getting his start on the hilarious sketch show Saturday Night Live and then moving on to movies that have become classic comedy films, the actor has said some pretty hilarious lines. Here are Adam Sandler's funniest quotes from movies and Saturday Night Live, all of which will make you laugh.

<p> One of Adam Sandler's best movies is <em>Billy Madison, </em>the story of a young man who has to pass grades 1-12 to inherit his father's business – a chain of hotels. The only issue is that Billy is an idiot, but he's alright with that – as he says in this quote, "Sometimes I feel like an idiot, but I am an idiot, so it kind of works out." </p>

<p> “Put on your yarmulke, it’s time for Hanukkah!” Adam Sandler sang in 1994 to celebrate the Jewish holiday. During the tune, the comedian names various celebrities who are Jewish, half Jewish, a quarter Jewish and not Jewish to an extremely catchy melody.  It was a hit then, and it’s a hit now. Even after all these years, Sandler sings his legendary song live, and it’s always present during <em>SNL’s </em>holiday specials. Talk about iconic. </p>

“Paul Newman's Half Jewish, Goldie Hawn's Half Too, Put Them Together; What A Fine-Lookin' Jew!” (Saturday Night Live)

Adam Sandler is known for his catchy tunes, and one of his most well-known ones was "The Chanukah Song" which he performed on Saturday Night Live. Among the funny lines in this seasonal tune is, "Paul Newman's half Jewish, Goldie Hawn's half too. Put them together, what a fine lookin' Jew." It's hard to imagine anyone else singing this song -- only Adam Sandler could make that line so funny.

<p> <em>Billy Madison </em>is one of Sandler's best films, with many hilarious lines. And while this wasn't the <em>most excellent </em>thing for Billy to say, it was hilarious in its delivery. When a child struggled to read, Billy yelled, "T-T-T-TODAY JUNIOR!" Which ends in him getting in trouble, of course. </p>

<p> During a sketch called "The Denise Show" on <em>Saturday Night Live</em>, Adam Sandler played Brian, who was hosting a show to mourn the loss of his relationship with Denise (another character). And before he begins the show, he says, "She ripped open my chest and pulled out my heart, but it's fine." </p> <p> Ouch, but so funny because who hasn't gone through a breakup that bad? </p>

<p> <em>Billy Madison </em>gave fans some great one-liners for Adam Sandler lovers, and this one is there. In this scene, he purposely puts water on his pants to help out a kid who unfortunately wet himself, so to stand up for the kid, he says to the other children, "you ain't cool, unless you pee your pants." Hilarious but also heartfelt that he helped the child. </p>

<p> Sandler's tunes that he would often sing on <em>Saturday Night Live </em>were iconic for a reason, and one of his best was "Red Hooded Sweatshirt," a song that he sang in honor of Valentine's Day for the love he felt for his sweatshirt, a gift from his mother. The hilarious line is "I like to rest my hands in your kangaroo pouch, it makes them feel comfy like a big soft couch." </p> <p> It's such a strange combination of lyrics that makes you chuckle, but also so true. <p> <em>Billy Madison </em>sends fans laughing with this one. When Billy had one of his school friends call their teacher (whom he had a crush on) and the call does not go well, Billy exposes himself on the call; he angrily says, "<em>You blew it!" </em>before storming off – even though he was the one who blew it. Plenty of things don’t make sense about <em>Billy Madison, </em>but to me, that’s the perfect line. </p>

<p> <em>Airheads</em> starred Brenden Fraser, Steve Buscemi, and Adam Sandler as the Lone Rangers in <em>Airheads, </em>a comedy film about a band that hijacks a radio station to play their music. Sandler delivers some hilarious one-liners here, but my favorite is when they're hiding in a closet, and his character says, "I don't wanna go to jail; I'm fragile" in the softest, most hilarious way. </p>

<p> One of my favorite Adam Sandler sketches is "Pepper Boy," where Sandler plays a waiter who is learning how to listen to customers' demands when putting pepper on their dish. He's not the brightest bulb in the garden, and he winds up putting pepper on a chocolate mousse, all while asking the person, "say when" repeatedly. </p>

<p> <em>Bedtime Stories </em>is an underrated Adam Sandler movie, where the stories the main character told his niece and nephew would come to life. In this movie, Sandler delivers this line, "Haven't you heard? Goofy is the new handsome," and somehow pulls off this funny pick-up line. </p>

<p> In the <em>Saturday Night Live </em>skit, "Bobby Watches Grandma," Sandler becomes the grandma. This complex woman immediately asks for one of her grandsons, Joey, when Joey's brother looks after her. He screams, "Where's Joey, I need him. I need Joey, I want Joey!" in the most dramatic way possible, and it's hilarious. </p>

<p> If you've ever played golf of any kind, you've had this feeling. In <em>Happy Gilmore, </em>a story about an amateur golfer entering a tournament to win money for his grandmother, Sandler's character, Happy, grows frustrated when a ball does not go in the hole. In front of several people, he screams at the ball, "Why didn't you just go HOME? That's your HOME! Are you too good for your HOME? Answer me!" You can't help but laugh. </p>

<p> Sandler visited Weekend Update on <em>Saturday Night Live </em>to give costume ideas to those viewers trying to dress up on a budget. <p> In the film <em>Funny People, </em>Sandler plays George Simmons, a comedian diagnosed with an illness. When Simmons visits a doctor and notes how terrifying the doctor's accent is, he openly says to him, "Are you mad that you died at the end of <em>Die Hard?</em>" Talk about something to never say to your doctor. </p>

Lesson learned: never eat Sandler's sandwiches.

<p> <em>Bulletproof </em>is a hilarious buddy cop film starring Sandler and Damon Wayans. In this film, Sandler's character, Archie Moses, is talking to his enemy and hurriedly says, "You'd better not kill me, man," followed by saying that he has certain "things" to do the next day. Because, yes, we all turn into scaredy cats when faced with death. </p>

<p> Possibly one of Sandler's best songs that he has sung is "Thanksgiving Song," a song that celebrates Thanksgiving. In this song, Sandler says, "A turkey for me, a turkey for you, let's eat turkey in a big brown shoe." The line doesn't make sense because who's eating turkey in a shoe? But it makes me laugh every time. </p>

<p> If you want to have your news sung to you, Adam Sandler’s Opera Man has you covered. With a thick accent, a white handkerchief and some very useful captions, the performer relayed the current events, ending every phrase with “oh” so they all rhymed.                    </p>

“Dio In Heaveno, Per Favor, Un More Matcho, Be So Greato.” (Saturday Night Live)

In the SNL skit "Opera Man," Sandler plays the popular character. One of the best lines this character delivered was "Dio in heaveno, per favor, un more matcho, be so greato" – which was him singing about a lottery ticket and wanting more money. I mean, come on. That's hilarious.

<p> <em>Airheads </em>is a hilarious musical comedy film, and Sandler's character, Pip, delivers this great line, "I ain't fartin' on now snare drum," when someone says that their record could be him farting on a snare drum. They didn't mean it in a literal way, but it was hilarious nevertheless. </p>

She's a waitress. They both love David Bowie. </p> <p> <strong>Why It Works: </strong>Adam Sandler's characters might be effectively undateable in many of his projects, but in <em>The Wedding Singer</em>, there's just enough common sense, lovability and eventually, drive behind the emotional outbursts to understand why a cute girl in an awful relationship would fall for him. Here, that cute girl is played by Drew Barrymore in all of her loopy glory, and the romantic chemistry is easily the best of both actors' careers. They're a great pair, and with a perfect ‘80s soundtrack, a ton of laughs and great supporting characters, we're all gonna grow old with <em>The Wedding Singer</em>. </p> <p> <strong>Perfect Quote: </strong>"I'll miss you, kiss you, give you my coat when you are cold. / Need you, feed you, I'll even let you hold the remote control." </p>

“We’re Living In A Material World And I Am A Material Girl, Or Boy.” (The Wedding Singer)

The Wedding Singer was pitched to Adam Sandler by Drew Barrymore, and it became one of his biggest hits. The movie follows a wedding singer who falls in love with a waitress. When his character, Robby, describes his outlook on life, he says, "We are living in a material world, and I am a material girl, or boy." It references a classic Madonna song. It's hysterical.

<p> In the film <em>I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,</em> Sandler and Kevin James star as two firefighters who pretend to be a gay couple and get married so their children can get healthcare. They have a "couple's spat" where Chuck openly says to Larry, "Every time I laughed at one of your jokes, I was faking it," to which Larry responds, "You monster!" Gets me every time. </p>

“For The Record, Everytime I Laughed At One Of Your Jokes, I Was Faking It.” (I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry)

In the film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Sandler and Kevin James star as two firefighters who pretend to be a gay couple and get married so their children can get healthcare. They have a "couple's spat" where Chuck openly says to Larry, "Every time I laughed at one of your jokes, I was faking it," to which Larry responds, "You monster!" Gets me every time.

<p> Adam Sandler was on a roll by the time The Waterboy was released in late 1998, but it’s crazy to think that it was the fifth highest grossing movie that year. According to Box Office Mojo, it brought in $161.4 million domestically, which is twice as much as Sandler’s earlier 1998 movie, The Wedding Singer, made during its run. </p>

"Now That's What I Call High Quality H20!" (The Waterboy)

The Waterboy is a great sports movie about an older man serving as the waterboy for a college football team. While plenty of lines from this movie are hilarious, his character, Bobby, saying, "Now that's what I call high-quality H2O!" always makes me snicker because who says that? That's so funny.

<p> <em>Happy Gilmore </em>is one of the funniest sports movies, and Sandler perfectly delivers this line. His character, Happy, enters a tournament for money. Still, he tells Shooter McGavin, a pro, "I was on this tour for one reason: money. But now I got a new reason," followed by a hilarious expletive. He truly wanted to stick it to an arrogant professional – and the following interaction is just as funny. </p>

“I Was On This Tour For One Reason: Money. But Now I Got A New Reason” (Happy Gilmore)

Happy Gilmore is one of the funniest sports movies, and Sandler perfectly delivers this line.

<p> Adam Sandler is known for being sarcastic in many of his movie roles, and one of his most iconic was Billy in <em>Billy Madison. </em>A spoiled man, Billy was hilarious in every way and used his sarcasm and dimwitted nature to get whatever he wanted – which, later on, hilariously backfires. </p>

"Ha Ha Ha. Shut Up!" (Billy Madison)

In Billy Madison, Sandler sarcastically laughs at someone, "Ha ha ha," before yelling sarcastically, "Shut up!" Yes, it's just as dramatic as you can expect it to be from Sandler.

<p> One of Adam Sandler and Chris Farley’s funniest collaborations was a musical sketch set to a song called “Lunch Lady Land,” which the <em>Uncut Gems</em> star did not write himself. According to <a href="https://uproxx.com/tv/reminder-bob-odenkirk-co-wrote-adam-sandlers-greatest-snl-sketch/">Uproxx</a>, his co-composers were Bob Odenkirk, Tim Herlihy (father of Please Don’t Destroy’s Martin Herlihy), and Allen Covert. </p>

“It Screamed Why Do You Burn Me And Serve Me Up Cold?” (Saturday Night Live)

In the skit, "Lunchlady Land," Sandler sings another ode with Chris Farley about lunch ladies, and this hilarious line is about the pepperoni pizza that lunch ladies serve, saying, "It screamed, why do you burn me and serve me up cold?" Because yes, lunch school pizzas are precisely that.

<p> Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) is a dedicated New York City police officer. He’s so committed to his work that he and his wife, Audrey (Jennifer Aniston) haven’t been on a vacation for quite a while. However, Nick books a trip to Europe for their anniversary. The trip isn’t the relaxing vacation that they want because they find themselves involved in a murder mystery. </p> <p> They are also being accused of the crime. Beyond all the <em>Murder Mystery </em>madness, it’s a simple story of a couple who manage to overcome dangerous situations because of their devotion and determination as a couple.                    </p>

"You're Watching A Real Person." (Murder Mystery)

Murder Mystery with co-star Jennifer Aniston is hilarious, and this line is so funny.

When their characters arrive on this yacht, Aniston's character, Audrey, compliments a woman behind her back, while also theorizing about her nationality because Audrey states, "she's that kind of pretty that you don't know what kind country she's from."

The woman, of course, hears her comments, and blatantly responds "Japan," flustering Audrey just a bit. Nick (Sandler) deadpans to Audrey, "You see? She can hear you; she's not on television right now, you're watching a real person."

I loved Murder Mystery 2 as much as the first with these kinds one-liners in both.
