The Laureate Announcement Ceremony

Each Spring, beginning in 2004, the World Food Prize has been privileged to announce the name of the recipient of its $250,000 award in a ceremony at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C.

A succession of Secretaries of State have taken part in the Laureate Announcement Ceremony, beginning with Secretary Colin Powell and including Secretaries Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Michael R. Pompeo. Other Cabinet and Senior US Government participants have been Secretaries of Agriculture Ann Veneman, and Tom Vilsack and USAID Administrators Andrew Natsios, Rajiv Shah and Gayle Smith.

Held most often in the elegant Benjamin Franklin Ballroom on the eight floor of the State Department, the ceremony is regularly attended by over 300 ambassadors, diplomats, members of Congress, representatives of international organizations and development agencies, and business leaders.

The Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium

Held each October in conjunction with the presentation of the World Food Prize, the "Borlaug Dialogue," is a three-day symposium that brings together international experts, policy leaders, business executives and farmers to address cutting-edge issues in global food security and nutrition. The event, which takes place in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, and regularly attracts over 1,000 participants from more than 50 countries, has been referred to as "the premier conference in the world on global agriculture." The Borlaug Dialogue has featured an array of celebrated international speakers, including U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, AGRA Chairman Kofi Annan, HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Bill Gates, who launched his multi-million dollar initiative to uplift Africa at the World Food Prize in 2009.

The World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony

The magnificent Iowa State Capitol building in Des Moines, Iowa, is the setting each October for the ceremony at which the $250,000 World Food Prize is presented to the newest Laureate(s).  The ceremony has been said to rival those of the Nobel Prize in Sweden and Norway, drawing over 800 international guests. Each year, world-class performers take the stage to honor the World Food Prize Laureate, and the event is televised and webcast live. Past performers have included Ray Charles, John Denver, Broadway star Leslie Odom Jr., the Tokyo String Quartet, the Kathak Gunjan dancers from India, and international and recording stars such as Chachi Tadesse of Ethiopia and Achinoam Nini (Noa) from Yemen. Following the Ceremony, the celebration continues at the Laureate Award Dinner, held in the rotunda of the Capitol. Learn more about past events here .

The Iowa Hunger Summit

Founded in 2006, with all four of Iowa's living governors and Dr. Borlaug serving as honorary co-chairs, this one-day, grassroots gathering, organized by the World Food Prize Foundation, highlights efforts of Iowans to alleviate hunger both at home and abroad. The event, which is free and open to the public, is held in advance of the Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, and includes workshops, keynote speakers from around the country, exhibitors, and more. HyVee and the Iowa Grocery Industry Association are the presenting sponsors of the Iowa Hunger Summit, which also includes the presentation of the Robert D. Ray Iowa SHARES Humanitarian Award to an Iowa "Hunger Fighter."

World Food and Music Festival, Des Moines, Iowa

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. both August 25 and 26, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. August 27. The festival is produced by the Greater Des Moines Partnership .

The 2023 World Food & Music Festival will feature more than 55 vendors with food and beverage items from across 26 countries.

The Festival began in October 2005 in the Historic East Village in Downtown Des Moines. It featured approximately two dozen vendors and welcomed thousands of guests eager to explore the diverse cuisine. The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines was there from the beginning to support The Festival and provide a solid base from which to grow.

Over the years, The Festival expanded its vendors, programming, and entertainment and continued to see more guests enjoying the activities each year. To accommodate the growth, The Festival moved onto the Downtown DSM bridges for several years and in 2017 expanded into its current home in Western Gateway Park. Today, more than 90,000 guests visit The Festival each year to taste, see, hear, and experience the many wonders of the World Food & Music Festival.

Foodie Feast

When it comes to dining in Greater Des Moines, there are so many appetizing options that it seems cruel to limit yourself to three meals a day. Instead, we’ll provide a smorgasbord of options and leave you to your own devices. Treadmill and post-meal nap not included.

FIND YOUR ADVENTURE AND  DOWNLOAD THIS ITINERARY .

STARTERS (BRUNCH)

If you’re looking for an old-school, stick-to-your-ribs breakfast – diner food done right – look no further than  Waveland Café  and  Drake Diner . Waveland is home to the “best hash browns in the galaxy,” and you’ll find little argument from native Hawaiiowan Jason Momoa, who likes it so much he’s had a dish named after him. Try Da Momoa - biscuits and gravy overtop hash browns with sunny side up eggs and bacon.

Drake Diner has been a Des Moines landmark since it opened in 1987, although we’d believe you if you told us it opened in 1957, given the interior aesthetic. Come for the charm, stay for the Whole Hog omelet and coffee refills.

If you’re more of the bottomless mimosa and avocado toast type, two of the best brunch options in town happen to have those in spades. Try  Americana’s  practically famous Bombshell Brunch, with bottomless mimosas and Bloody Mary’s, not to mention family-style dining that includes everything from fried donut holes to a grilled cheese station.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Americana (@americanadsm)

St. Kilda  is the new-ish (and cool) kid, with two locations, including St. Kilda Collective in Valley Junction. You can’t go wrong with the original St. Kilda just south of downtown, specializing in just about any kind of toast (avocado, mushroom, berry) that your heart…or stomach…desires.

Other must-try brunches:   The Breakfast Club  – East Village newbie with an already legendary drink menu. University Library Café  - Legendary breakfast nachos.  Gilroy’s  - Al fresco brunch at it’s finest.  Mullets  - Breakfast pizza with a skyline view.  Eggs and Jam  - Hip-themed breakfast with dishes like Toast Face Killah.

AUTHENTIC DES MOINES:

If you visit the #1 pork producing state in the country but don’t have a breaded pork tenderloin, were you even here? You won’t have to look for long since it’s an unofficial state law that every restaurant must offer pork tenderloins. We’d recommend starting with old stalwarts like  Smitty’s  and  B&B Grocery , serving up lauded loins that are a favorite of both locals and visiting political press every caucus season.

If you want a Des Moines original that’s more cloth napkin than wet nap, try our signature dish, Steak de Burgo. A filet topped with a garlic and butter sauce, fair warning, it may render future steaks rather dull in comparison. You can find it at practically any Des Moines steakhouse with an Italian sounding name, but the dish at  Tursi’s Latin King  is so good we made a  video  about it.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Tursi’s Latin King (@tursislatinking)

Irreverent yet delicious would be the best way to describe  Fong’s Pizza  and  Zombie Burger . Fong’s is a tiki bar with Asian-inspired pizza whose famous Crab Rangoon pizza earned coveted praise by Alton Brown on Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Zombie Burger serves up inspired creations like the Walking Ched (burger between fried mac and cheese patties) and spiked milkshakes in a post-apocalyptic setting. It’s the perfect date night for horror-movie aficionados.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Fong's Pizza (@fongspizza)

Other must-try classics:   Jesse’s Embers   - A Des Moines institution serving up steaks and old-school charm.  Big Al’s  - A smoked tenderloin you didn’t know you needed in your life.  Simon’s  - Locals are obsessed with their Steak de Burgo for good reason.  Tasty Tacos  - Tacos in a puffed flour shell.  B-bops  - Everyone’s favorite local burger chain.  Waterfront Seafood Market  - Rustic New England fish market and restaurant with fresh fish flown in daily!

NEW SCHOOL:

Greater Des Moines is home to so many new and innovative eateries that sometimes it’s hard to keep up. But we have an insatiable appetite for deliciousness, so we’ll put on stretchy pants and give it a shot. Start with  Eatery A  and their patio overlooking Ingersoll Avenue’s “restaurant row.” Their happy hour (even on weekends) is the worst kept secret in town because it’s amazing (half-price pizza and drinks!).

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Eatery A (@eaterya_dsm)

HoQ  prides itself on farm-to-table cuisine (we’re Iowa - we practically invented it) with an evolving menu that showcases whatever’s in season. For elevated diner food in a decidedly hip setting, check out  Clyde’s Fine Diner  in the East Village. This ain’t your grandpappy’s diner, although he’d probably still love their Old Fashioned.

Other must-try new school:     Lucky Horse  - Beer and burgers don’t have to be boring.   Fresko  - The buzz is warranted.  Bubba  – Southern comfort in the heart of the Midwest.   Motley School Tavern  - An underrated gem in the underrated Beaverdale neighborhood.  Mulberry Street Tavern  – See and be seen at swank hot spot inside Surety Hotel.

AWARD-WINNING EATS:

We’re not all quirky fusion, food on a stick, and extra sides of ranch dressing. Sometimes our food gets gussied up, and when it does, it cleans up nicely. Take  Harbinger , the brainchild of chef Joe Tripp, who’s earned five James Beard nominations for Best Chef Midwest. With vegetable-focused small plates and cocktails with an Asian twist, this is the kind of place you can’t stop talking about.

Centro  is one of the most renowned restaurants in the city, with remarkably consistent food and service, whether you opt for a wood-fired pizza or homemade pasta. The same could be said for  Django , a French-brasserie across from the beautiful Pappajohn Sculpture Garden, offering the best French food you never thought you’d find in the middle of Iowa.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by DjangoDSM (@djangodsm)

Other must-try award-winning eats:   The Cheese Bar  - Named #1 Cheese Shop in America.   Alba  - An East Village favorite with reclaimed doors hanging from the ceiling.   Trellis  - Located in the Botanical Gardens, the food is matched only by the scenery.

INTERNATIONAL EATS:

Believe it or not, we have more than just corndogs and other assorted meats on a stick. We have a diverse selection of ethnic eats for every taste bud and spice tolerance. Located in an unassuming strip mall in the burbs,  Mi Patria  serves up Ecuadorian food (think empanadas, skirt steak, and plantains) that has been featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and once you’ve eaten there, will likely be featured on your Instagram feed.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Lindsay Simmerman (@simmichanga)

Hessen Haus  downtown is a German-style bier hall with German fare like schnitzel and currywurst, that you can wash down with a crisp hefeweizen served in a glass boot. If your glass of choice is more margarita glass than glass boot, check out  Malo . At this trendy downtown Latin American hotspot, you can upgrade your regular nachos to Totchos (you’re welcome) or perhaps change your life with a pork belly pupusa.

Speaking of life-changing,  Aposto  offers Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisine inside an 1880 Victorian mansion. Talk about date night done right.

Other must-try ethnic eats:   Tacos La Familia  - One word: Birria. Two words: Birria tacos.  Wasabi  - We have sushi in Iowa! And it’s good!  Lucca  - Date night Italian in the East Village.  Open Sesame  - You don’t have to tell us twice.  A Dong  - Vietnamese pho to warm the soul.

Iowa candy maker Palmer recalls 29 products for possible salmonella contamination

When it comes to product safety, Marty Palmer says 99.9% probability isn’t good enough. It has to be 100%.

That's why the president and CEO of Palmer Candy in Sioux City voluntarily has recalled products with white liquid coatings after the supplier of the material reported there was a potential for contamination with salmonella from an ingredient that, in turn, came from one of its suppliers.

Palmer said the recall includes “thousands and thousands, many tons of products because we use a lot of white coatings.” A total of 29 vareities of treats made by the 145-year-old, family owned company are affected ― but not its iconic Twin Bing bars.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, all eyes are on Iowa. Get updates of all things Iowa politics delivered to your inbox.

Production of the coating has been suspended while U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the company continue their investigation of the source of the problem, according to a news release from Palmer Candy.

While there have been no reported illnesses, and tests of ingredients all have come back negative for salmonella, Palmer said the recall was necessary to ensure safety.

More: Planters nuts recalled due to possible listeria contamination: See products affected

“While there is a very, very small chance (of contamination), when you are working with food and safety, 99.9% is not 100%. I only want my products to be 100% safe for our customers,” he said, adding, "That’s why the U.S. food system is the best in the world."

He said the problem was with dairy powders provided to the maker of the candy coating.

“It was a supplier of a supplier,” he said.

What to do if you have a recalled item

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected withsalmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in the microorganism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled confectionary items were distributed nationwide in Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target, Dollar General, and to distributors in Iowa and in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The products comes in a variety of retail packaging, including bags, pouches, and tubs.

Consumers who have purchased white-coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-831-0828 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Palmer Candy had a similar recall of 18 products in 2017, also because of a milk powder that had the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

"We always investigate hard to determine what has happened," Palmer said.

He said his supplier of the white coating will not be using the supplier of the suspect dairy powder again.

Here is a list of the items included in the Palmer Candy recall.

World Food Program director Cindy McCain: parts of Gaza in 'full-blown famine'

world food tour des moines

Cindy McCain, director of the World Food Program, says northern Gaza is experiencing "full-blown famine."

"There is famine – full-blown famine – in the north and it's moving its way south," McCain said in an interview set to air Sunday on NBC's "Meet The Press."

Her remarks are not an official declaration of famine, which is a technical designation spearheaded by the United Nations. The U.N. has said famine is "imminent" in Gaza since mid-March.

But McCain is the second American official to say that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached the level of famine. Samantha Power, director of the U.S. Agency for International Development, was the first to do so during congressional testimony last month.

McCain told NBC's Kristen Welker that she believes there is famine in Gaza "based on what we've seen and what we've experienced on the ground."

"It's horror. It's so hard to look at and it's so hard to hear, also," she added. "So I'm so hoping that we can get a ceasefire and begin to feed these people, especially in the North, in a much faster fashion."

More: Biden to meet with King of Jordan as US, Israel go 'back and forth' over Rafah invasion

The group estimated last week that 30% of children under the age of 2 in Gaza are "acutely malnourished" and 70% of the population in the north "is facing catastrophic hunger. "

Local health authorities say that more than 34,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began on Oct. 7, when Israel began a bombing campaign in retaliation for an attack in which Hamas killed around 1,200 people and took more than 200 people as hostages into Gaza .

Gaza has been in a hunger crisis for months as Israel bombards the strip. In the wake of the Oct. 7 attack, Israel launched a counterattack and called for a "complete siege" of Gaza, stopping any electricity, food, water or fuel from entering the territory. Israel also destroyed Gaza's port, and fishing and farming have become inaccessible.

That siege has since ended, but it is still challenging for aid workers to get supplies through to Palestinians. Israel conducts extensive inspections of the goods crossing the border through few checkpoints. American military forces are now building two floating piers off the Gaza coast to help deliver 2 million meals a day to people facing starvation as a result of the war.

More: Pentagon begins building floating pier to ferry humanitarian aid to Gaza

Israel has faced increased pressure in recent weeks to make it easier for aid workers to get into Gaza . The death of seven international aid workers from World Central Kitchen in an Israeli airstrike pushed President Joe Biden to give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an ultimatum to either protect civilians and aid workers, or lose U.S. military support.

Israel said it would open new aid routes, but has not backed down from promises to invade the southern city of Rafah , where many refugees who have fled bombing in the north now reside.

The World Food Prize Foundation

Laureate Society

The World Food Prize Laureate Society is the volunteer component of the World Food Prize designed to educate visitors to the Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates. In 2009, the World Food Prize Foundation undertook the $29.8 million project to transform the former Des Moines Public Library building and give it new purpose as the home of the World Food Prize. Dedicated to carrying on the legacy of Dr. Borlaug, the art and architecture have been designed to tell several stories:

  • That Dr. Norman E. Borlaug is the “man that has saved more lives than any other person who has ever lived”,
  • That the World Food Prize is the “Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture” and that the World Food Prize Laureates are the leaders of the single greatest period of food production and hunger reduction in all of human history (the last 50 years);
  • That led by John Ruan, Iowa rescued the World Food Prize in 1990 and moved it to Des Moines with the goal of making Iowa “The Hunger Fighting Capital of the World”; and
  • That Iowa has an amazing agricultural and humanitarian heritage.

Orientation and Training   Candidates for the Laureate Society will need to complete an information form and meet with the Director of the Laureate Society. The next steps include a group training session followed by a discussion and orientation tour with Kate Levasseur, Archivist and Historian at the World Food Prize Foundation. Each docent is given a docent guidebook with extensive information and background on the World Food Prize, the Hall of Laureates and the artwork in the Hall. More than 10% of the total renovation budget was devoted to commissioning exhibits and art that tell all of the stories of the Hall of Laureates.

Additional training is accomplished by new docents shadowing experienced docents learning one room at a time with the goal of being able to do a complete tour of the Hall of Laureates.

Qualifications To be a member of the Laureate Society, you should have: a desire to meet and work with people; good communication skills; ability to learn new information and the necessary time to volunteer. It is expected that a docent will volunteer from four to six hours a month.

5 Reasons why you should join the Laureate Society

(1) You will have an opportunity to meet people from all over the world;

(2) You will be promoting a majestic downtown Des Moines landmark;

(3) You will have the chance to educate visitors about the World Food Prize - a premier Des Moines program;

(4) You will learn about and be able to share Iowa’s rich agricultural and humanitarian history; and,

(5) You will have the chance to showcase downtown Des Moines and become an integral part of your community.
