WestJet Carry On Rules: Everything You Need to Know 1

WestJet Carry-On Size: Detailed Guide to Their Carry-on Policy!

If you want to avoid checking a bag and paying extra fees on WestJet, you need to read this.

WestJet Carry-On Size Limit

Westjet carry-on weight limit, my favorite carry-on bag for westjet, westjet personal item size, westjet encore carry on size restrictions, westjet baggage fees (checked baggage), catsa liquids rule, rules for bringing food on a westjet flight, fees for bringing your pet with you on westjet, prohibited items.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about WestJet’s carry-on policy. This includes WestJet carry-on baggage size and weight limits, fees, personal items, liquids, prohibited items, and other things you should know to avoid any surprises when you board your next WestJet or WestJet Encore flight!

WestJet Carry-On Policy

WestJet allows one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard at no charge.

This policy if for domestic or international flights operated by WestJet or WestJet Encore. It does not apply to WestJet partner airlines .

Westjet Airline Carry-On Size Rules

When flying WestJet your carry on baggage cannot be larger than 21 x 15 x 9 inches (53 x 38 x 23cm) and your personal item cannot be exceed 16 x 13 x 6 inches (41 x 33 x15cm).

If you aren’t aware of your carry on bag dimensions, WestJet provides bag sizers located at their ticket counters and gates. You should always check that your bags fit within this bag sizer. If your baggage is larger than the standard carry-on size or if you have more than 2 bags, you will be charged a fee.

westjet carry on bag sizer

As a rule, WestJet doesn’t impose weight restrictions on a carry-on bag.   The only rule they have is that it must be light enough that you can store it in the overhead bin unassisted.  Your smaller, personal items should be stowed under the seat in front of you.

When flying North American based airlines, such as WestJet, I recommend buying the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Spinner. I have personally used this carry-on for years and have never had a problem stowing it on board. It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds everything I need for a 3-4 day trip.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 21" Carry-On Expandable Spinner

This carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate overhead bin space on most major US airlines.

Case Dimensions:

  • H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in.

Note: If fully expanded it may not meet overhead bin size limits, so be careful to not overpack.

Personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop, camera bag, backpack, shopping bag, small musical instrument or a similar-sized item.  Westjet allows one free personal item, in addition to your carry on, as long as it is small enough to be stowed under the seat in front of you.

Your personal item cannot be larger than 16” x 13” x 6” (41cm x 33cm x15cm).

Note: If you are assigned a bulkhead seat, there are no seats in front of you to store your personal items, so everything will have to fit in the overhead bin.

WestJet Encore is a subsidiary of WestJet that flies regional routes throughout Canada, primarily to and from Calgary. They exclusively fly the “Dash 8” (De Havilland Canada DHC-8) Turbo Prop, which has limited space for carry on baggage.

When flying a Dash 8 with Encore you can bring a personal item on board, but you will often not be allowed to bring a carry-on bag due to limited overhead space.  Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you.

All carry-on baggage that fits within WestJet’s size restrictions will be gate checked, free of charge , during the boarding process and returned upon deplaning.

Pro Tip: Despite this “official rule” there are some bags you can fit on a regional jet.  Check out this article on the  best carry-on baggage for regional jets .

If you have to check a bag on WestJet, there are some size and weight rules to be aware of. The size of checked baggage must be within 157 total cm (62 total in.) and not weigh more than 23 kg (50 lb.).

Oversized luggage exceeds 157 cm (62 in.) in total combined dimension (length + width + height), but less than 203 cm (80 in.). Overweight luggage exceeds 23 kg (51 lb.), but no more than 45 kg (100 lb.).

You are allowed to check 2 to 4 bags on a WestJet flight, except with WestJet Encore, where you are allowed 2 to 3 bags.

You can prepay for up to two pieces of checked baggage on WestJet-operated flights when you book online or at any time up to 24 hours before your flight through  Manage Trips . Checked baggage fees may also be paid when you check in online  or at the airport 24 hours to 60 minutes before you fly.

WestJet Baggage Fees are based on the route you are flying and the fare class you purchased. For the most up-to-date pricing go to the WestJet Baggage Fees page .

WestJet Carry-On Liquids

Liquids, gels and/or aerosols placed in your carry-on baggage must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less and fit in a 1 quart-sized (1 litre) plastic bag. One plastic bag is allowed per passenger. Anything larger must be packed in your checked luggage.

Duty-free liquids, aerosols and gels containing more than 100 ml are permitted as long as they are carried in a duty-free issued Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB). Purchases must be accompanied by a receipt and the security bag must not be tampered with or opened prior to going through security at a transfer airport.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is a the government agency responsible for screening passengers and baggage at Canadian airports. They are equivalent to the TSA in the United States.

Any liquid that does not meet the CATSA Liquids rule will either have to be checked with your luggage or will be thrown away at the security checkpoint.

Here is a list of common items that are classified as Liquids, Aerosols and Gels:

Exceptions  to this rule are certain medications and baby food/child nourishment.

Here’s a link to the CATSA website advising what  food can be brought with you  on your WestJet flight.  This applies to food you are bringing from home through security.   Once you get through security, you can bring just about any food on the plane that you buy at the airport.

Flying with Pets

If you are going to bring a pet on board with you, it must be able to fit in a small, ventilated pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you.  Pets in cabin kennels will count as your one carry-on item.  In addition to the kennel, you can bring one personal item onboard the aircraft.

Here is a chart showing the pet fees WestJet charges each way.   Double them for a round-trip flight.

If you are bringing your pet with you, make sure you follow  CATSA’s pet policy  and have an approved Pet Carrier that conforms to  WestJet’s pet policy .

Sherpa Deluxe Travel Bag Pet Carrier, Airline Approved

Features mesh panels so your pet can breathe easily, a non-slip shoulder strap, locking zippers, and a rear storage pocket for treats and other goodies.

Approved for use on most major airlines and the small and medium sizes are included in Sherpa's exclusive Guaranteed on Board program.

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as a hazardous materials. Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked bag on all flights. These rules are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (“CATSA”).

Items considered  “dangerous goods”  are prohibited under WestJet’s carry-on policy and include the following:

  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Mace and  pepper spray
  • Poisonous, infectious, or radioactive substances
  • Sharp objects (knives, cutting instruments,  razors , ice picks, carpet knives, metal scissors, box cutters, or similar items)
  • Any beverage with more than 70 percent alcohol
  • Camping equipment containing flammable liquids or gasses
  • Flammable liquids, including gasoline and kerosene
  • Hoverboards, including electric skateboards, balance boards, gravity boards, and self-balancing devices
  • Medical or liquid oxygen
  • Torch lighters , lighter fluid, strike-anywhere matches, and fire starters
  • Wet-cell batteries
  • Motor oil, hydraulic fluids, brake fluid, and transmission fluid

The following items  are not considered “dangerous goods”  and are allowed when packaged properly, in accordance with FAA regulations

  • Knitting/ scissors
  • Hiking or trekking poles
  • Hair dryer/Straightener
  • Sunscreen/bug spray
  • Food as a carry-on
  • Fishing hooks
  • Fragile glass items

A complete list can be found on the  CATSA website , the  FAA website , and the  TSA website .

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

Have you ever heard of or flown WestJet Airlines? Perhaps you’re curious about what the Canadian airline’s policies are regarding carry-on and checked luggage, so be sure to read on. To answer your questions in this regard, I will cover as many of them as I can in this article here, and offer you links to additional relevant information.

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Carry-On & Personal Item Size?

WestJet Airlines Ltd. is the second-largest Canadian airline, second only to Air Canada, and is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. WestJet operates an average of nearly 800 flights per day to transport over 66,000 passengers daily.

This great carry-on bag  is for travelers that want to get the best value out of their luggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag  could be the last carry-on bag you ever purchase!

Let me fill you in on WestJet’s current rules and regulations and then answer common questions I hear about them.

Table of Contents

How Strict is WestJet Airlines With Its Carry-on Luggage Policy?

WestJet is considered among travelers as one of the stricter airlines in regard to baggage size and weight. WestJet recommends carefully measuring your carry-on and personal items before traveling. In addition to your one carry-on bag, you’ll also be allowed one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack, diaper bag, or laptop bag.

WestJet Airlines, like other carriers, implements its own policies. If your luggage is deemed to be “oversize,” you could very well have to pay additional check-in fees at your boarding gate.

Carry-on luggage items have size restrictions, but not weight restrictions, and are typically stowed in the luggage bins overhead of passenger seats. Personal items typically are stowed underneath the seat of each passenger, though they may need to go in the overhead bin, as well.

Including handles and wheels, your carry-on luggage (e.g., bag, backpack, suitcase) on WestJet Airlines flights is not to exceed: 21” l x 15” w x 9” h (53 x 38 x 23 cm), or 45 total linear inches/114 cm. Your carry-on item must also be light enough so you can store the bag in the overhead luggage compartment by yourself (individuals with special needs or disabilities can receive assistance upon request).

Personal items (e.g., laptop, purse, briefcase, etc.) should not exceed 16” l x 13” w x 6” h (41 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm).

Take some preemptive cautionary steps beforehand and invest in some WestJet-compliant carry-on luggage so that you can travel in peace and quiet.

How Can I Measure My Carry-on Bag to Make Sure It Fits on a WestJet Airlines Flight?

To help you verify your baggage conforms with WestJet’s carry-on size restrictions, the carrier recommends taking note of bag sizers at airport locations that feature its required 21″ x 15″ x 9″ dimensions.

It’s also a good idea to measure your carry-on bag before you leave for the airport to ensure that your entire bag, along with the wheels and handles, measures 21″ x 15″ x 9″ or less.

It’s important to remember that the three-dimensional measurements together – length + height + width – cannot add up to more than 45 linear inches/114 linear cm. If you happen to be traveling with a soft-sided or expandable suitcase, you may want to measure your carry-on again after it’s packed to ensure it still complies.

My WestJet-compliant Luggage Recommendations

Would you like to know what carry-on luggage I would recommend for flying with WestJet Airlines? I personally recommend the following WestJet-compliant carry-on luggage bags because of the carrier’s strictness with its luggage policies.

This is a great carry-on bag for travelers that want to get great value out of their travel baggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag is one you’ll fall in love with, and it may be the last carry-on bag you’ll ever purchase!

WestJet Airlines’ Carry-on Luggage Allowance

WestJet Airlines passengers are allowed to bring one carry-on item and one personal item on board its flights. Any items which do not fit into a sizing device or which are considered to be oversized will need to be checked, with checked baggage fees assessed accordingly.

WestJet can charge you $75.00 CAD / $56 USD extra for bags between 63 to 80 linear inches total (158 to 203 centimeters). Bags in excess of 80 linear inches will not be accepted.

Bringing Carry-on Liquid Items Onto WestJet Airlines Flights

You are allowed to bring liquid items onboard WestJet Airlines flights in your carry-on baggage as long as they pass through security checkpoints.

Toiletries and items in the form of liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers of 3.4 fl. Oz. (100 ml/100g) or less must be packed neatly in a clear, resealable one-quart (1 liter) plastic bag. Try these Ziploc one-quart baggies .

Duty-free liquids, aerosols, and gels of more than 3.4 oz. /  100 ml are allowed to be brought on board WestJet flights, as long as they are contained in a duty-free issued Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

You’ll find plenty more information here on our TravelontheFly site about what items you are and aren’t allowed to bring on a plane with you. You may also want to verify these requirements with WestJet’s website .

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Your Carry-on Size?

You shouldn’t have to worry about anything as long as your item(s) fit in the overhead bin above you or underneath the seat in front of you.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible, I’d suggest complying with the carrier’s policies. If you need a new carry-on bag that will fit WestJet’s (and other carriers’) guidelines, get this bag and don’t have to worry about it ever again.

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Your Carry-on Baggage Weight?

Most airlines, including WestJet, are not concerned with carry-on/personal item weight. You should only be concerned with spaces in the cabin where carry-on items should be able to be stowed comfortably. Meeting the size dimensions of your carry-on bags I mentioned above should cover all your bases.

Should I Risk Flying on WestJet Airlines With an Oversized Carry-on?

Most individuals who fly frequently will probably tell you, “No way!” And I would have to agree with them. But know that if your bag is only slightly larger than WestJet Airlines’ specified size dimensions, you’ll likely be OK. Worst-case scenario if your carry-on is too large is that you will have to check your bag at the gate, but then you can be charged $75 CAD ($56 USD) for checking an oversized bag. PRO TIP – You have a better chance of getting away with a slightly larger piece of luggage if your carry-on is soft-sided. That‘s why I have highlighted and pointed you toward soft-sided bags like this one here . They are a little easier to squeeze into tight spots, including into the overhead bins on a plane!

WestJet Airlines Checked Baggage Fees

If you’re flying WestJet Premium, PremiumFlex, Business, or BusinessFlex, there is no charge for your first two checked bags. EconoFlex allows you one free checked bag.

Basic, Econo, and Member Exclusive tickets pay $30 CAD ($22 USD) for the first checked bag prepaid ($40 CAD/$30 USD at check-in) and $50 CAD ($37 USD) for the second checked bag prepaid ($60 CAD/$45 USD at check-in).

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations, and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within WestJet Airlines’ size regulations, and then you will never have to worry about it!

You can read more about WestJet Airlines’ checked bag policies here as you’re preparing for a specific upcoming flight.

Where Can I Find a Quality Travel Bag That’s Within WestJet Airlines’ Carry-on Luggage Limits?

I recommend this great carry-on bag that is an incredible value for the cost.

And this Travel Pro bag is an excellent choice for even the pickiest travelers.

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Its “One Personal Item” Policy?

WestJet Airlines is considered to be quite strict in regard to baggage sizes and weights among travelers. One small personal item is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items). Technically speaking, WestJet expects personal items to be 16” l x 13” w x 6” h (41 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm) or less in size, but as long as your personal item can easily be carried and stored underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead luggage bin, WestJet Airlines representatives probably won’t be asked about it.

WestJet Airlines’ Personal Item Policy

Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you, and dimensions should not exceed 16” l x 13” w x 6” h (41 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm) . Read more about personal items on WestJet Airlines flights here .

Carrying Additional Items Onto WestJet Airlines Flights

In addition to your carry-on bag and personal item onboard WestJet Airlines flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal , food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Is the First Checked Bag Free on WestJet Airlines Flights?

WestJet Airlines charges $30 CAD for the first checked bag and $50 CAD for the 2nd checked bag if they are prepaid. Overweight (>50 lbs/23 kg) and oversize bags are assessed an additional fee of $75 CAD.

Exceptions to checked baggage fee charges include: Strollers and car seats when traveling with infants or children.

Read more about WestJet Airlines’ checked bag policy here .

So, How Strict is WestJet Airlines About Carry-on and Personal Items?

WestJet Airlines passengers are allowed to take one carry-on bag and one personal item on board its flights. Both of these items should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin, or one of them should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with WestJet Airlines’ requirements, like this one .

In case you choose to take this risk with WestJet Airlines by bringing a larger bag, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. If your carry-on or personal item is deemed to be “oversized,” you could be charged a bag check-in fee at your boarding gate.

Here’s What You Need To Know About WestJet Baggage Allowance

Here’s What You Need To Know About WestJet Baggage Allowance

To fly with WestJet, you must understand their luggage restrictions as they will dictate what you can bring on the plane and how much it will cost. Our blog post “Here’s What You Need To Know About WestJet Baggage Allowance” will provide a general overview of WestJet’s baggage weight policy for both checked and carry-on bags. So, before you book your flights such as flights from Toronto to Ahmedabad India , make sure to take a look and review this article first.

WestJet Carry-On Luggage Size

The WestJet carry-on policy makes travel more comfortable and convenient for passengers. With the generous allocation of two things per person, many people can board the aircraft with everything they need without having to check their bags. One personal item, such as a laptop bag or briefcase, is equal to one ordinary carry-on item, such as a suitcase or duffle bag. The carry-on luggage cannot be larger than 115 centimetres (45 inches) or weigh more than 10 kilograms (22 pounds).

In addition to the personal cabin baggage that is provided by the airline, WestJet gives passengers the option to buy an extra seat if they need one for larger bags. Passengers must stow knives and other potentially dangerous goods in checked baggage, as these items cannot be brought onboard.

WestJet Carry-On Baggage Allowance

  • One component, weighing just over 10 kg and measuring 23 by 40 by 51 cm, can be found either in the overhead bin or behind the seat.
  • 1 piece, 16 by 33 by 43 cm, as heavy as you can lift comfortably, stored in the overhead bin or under the seat.

Checked Baggage Weight of WestJet

Customers who book flights from Toronto to Delhi with a WestJet ticket are entitled to free bag checks. The amount of checked luggage depends on the type of ticket and the specific route taken.

Standard checked baggage allowance for the majority of fares is one bag with a maximum weight and dimension of 23 kg (50 pounds) and 158 cm (62 inches). Passengers must check in these luggage at least 45 minutes before the flight’s scheduled departure time to ensure that they load onto the aircraft safely. Customers must pay additional fees before boarding their trip for excess or large baggage.

Moreover, WestJet provides free checked baggage for travelers bringing infants under the age of two. WestJet’s infant baggage allowance policy entitles each infant to one free piece of checked baggage weighing up to 10 kg (22 lbs).

  • One component, 62 inches long or 157 cm long, weighing no more than 23 kg.
  • There are four pieces, each measuring 115 linear inches, with a maximum weight of 23 kilos.

Checked Baggage Rules of WestJet For Exceptional Items

On WestJet flights, a variety of items are allowed, including sporting equipment, mobility devices, musical instruments, and pet carriers. Sports equipment includes items like skis, snowboards, golf bags, surfboards, bicycles, and skateboards as well as other things like diving or camping supplies. All large sporting goods must comply with their specific size requirements and pay the associated shipping fees.

Before allowing a customer to check in a battery-operated wheelchair or mobility scooter, WestJet requires a letter of authorization from the manufacturer stating that the assistive device is secure for air travel.

  • One item, measuring 105 cm by 40 cm by 23 cm and weighing no more than 10 kg, is permitted.
  • You are permitted 158 cm of checked baggage that weighs no more than 32 kg.

WestJet Baggage Weight Limit for International Flights

All travelers flying with WestJet receive a generous international carry-on allowance. These regulations simplify the process for passengers to bring luggage on board and make the most of their travel opportunities.

Each passenger can carry a maximum of two pieces of carry-on luggage, with a weight limit of 10 kg (22 lbs) for each. Additionally, the combined height, width, and depth of each piece must not exceed 45 inches. Passengers should note that anything exceeding these restrictions must be checked in as hold luggage to maintain safety and security.

Each component must not surpass 115 cm (45 inches) in size and 10 kg in weight. Additionally, a personal bag measuring 43 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm is permitted.

WestJet Baggage Allowance for International

WestJet Airlines offers its international passengers such as if you’ve booked cheap flight tickets from Toronto to Hyderabad a sizable checked baggage allowance on international flights. Passengers can bring up to two pieces of complimentary luggage on international flights, subject to weight and size limitations imposed by WestJet. The airline restricts each piece of checked luggage to a maximum weight of 50 pounds (23 kilograms) and dimensions of 62 inches (157 centimeters). We inform customers that fines may be incurred for bringing products that exceed these limits or for checking more than their allotted amount, with the aim of maintaining affordable rates. You can check out Flyopedia.com for cheap flight deals from the USA to India for your next adventure.

You can check in one item that is 62 inches long, 23 kg in weight, and no longer than 115 cm.

WestJet Oversized Baggage for International Flights

WestJet has set standards to ensure that people can travel with confidence knowing their possessions will get them from point A to point B safely. WestJet is aware that some travelers may have unique needs when it comes to their baggage allowance. Special allowances for luggage can be made on a case-by-case basis for travelers carrying items such as musical instruments, sporting goods, or medical equipment.

This concludes our discussion of WestJet’s luggage policy. It is now time for you to start planning for your trip! Now that you are aware of the exact rules and restrictions controlling WestJet flight luggage limits and what to bring, it is time to buy your ticket. And that’s where we came in. WestJet Baggage and Carry-on

What is the carry-on allowance on westjet flights.

WestJet allows passengers to bring on board one carry-on baggage and one personal item . When flying with WestJet Encore, you will fly in a Bombardier Q400 NextGen turboprop which is big, but the space for the carry-on baggage is little. When traveling with WestJet Encore be sure to carry your essential items with you (fragile objects, medication, keys, laptops, and cell phones).  As such, you may be asked to check carry-on items, so be sure to carry your essential items with you (fragile objects, medication, keys, laptops, and cell phones).

What is WestJet’s policy on checked baggage allowance?

WestJet and WestJet Encore accept standard bags up to 157 cm (62 inches) in combined dimensions (length + width + height) and 23 kg (50 lbs) . A checked baggage fee may apply from the first bag based on the fare type purchased, where you are traveling to and from, and on the marketing carrier (the airline selling the seat).

Baggage over 45 kg (100 lbs) or with combined dimensions exceeding 203 cm (80 in) will not be accepted for transport. Some items like wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, approved restraint systems, playpens, strollers, and humanitarian aids are permitted at no charge.

Carry-on Baggage

Each WestJet passenger can have one carry-on baggage and one personal item on board stowed under the seat in front or in the overhead bins. The carry-on bag may include, but it is not limited  to a backpack, bag, or suitcase. The carry-on bag cannot exceed the following measurements: 53 x 23 x 38 cm (21 x 9 x 15 in).

The personal item may be but is not limited to a briefcase or purse, camera, garment, kennel, or laptop computer. The personal item must not exceed the following measurements: 41 x 15 x 33 cm (16 x 6 x 13 in) .

In addition to the carry-on baggage certain items are allowed :

  • A diaper bag with the child’s items.
  • An approved restraint system for children with a purchased seat.
  • Canes and walkers.
  • Duty free items.
  • Properly labeled medication.
  • Medical devices, syringes or needles.
  • Human organs for transplant or delicate scientific instruments.
  • Two liters of blood for personal use and properly packaged.
  • Cremated remains.

Special recommendations :

  • You should always pack in your carry-on: identification, keys, medication, jewelry, mobile devices.
  • At check-in , your carry-on should fit the sizing device.
  • Your carry-on should also be light enough so you can put it in the overhead cabins or under your chair without any assistance.
  • Carry-on baggage should only contain acceptable items for the country you are traveling to.

Checked baggage

It is important to mention that baggage check-in cut-off time is 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes before departure for international flights. However, if you have overweight or oversized baggage, you should check-in 30 minutes before the normal check-in time .

Maximum four bags per passenger are accepted on WestJet flights , and maximum three bags per passenger are allowed when traveling with WestJet Encore in the turboprop aircraft. However, the 3rd and 4th bags are accepted on a space-available basis to/from all destinations, and only two bags per passenger and only one oversized golf bag are accepted when traveling to/from Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago .

Baggage Fees

Baggage fees are combinable where applicable (if the third bag is overweight and oversized, all three fees will apply). WestJet charges the following baggage fees :

Sporting Equipment

Sporting equipment counts as a piece of checked baggage and is accepted provided the following requirements are met :

  • The sports item should have a maximum length of 3 meters (9.8 feet) .
  • The equipment should meet the specific air travel requirements.
  • A handling fee of $50 CAD will be charged at the airport for bicycles, each surfboard, paddleboard, wakeboard and set of wave skis, and firearms .
  • Oversized fee and overweight fee (up to 100 lbs) will be waived for hockey, ringette, lacrosse, and football equipment and bicycle in a container with a maximum dimension of 292 cm (115 in) .
  • The oversized fee will be waived for curling equipment, golf equipment, skis, water skis, snowboards, and vaulting poles (accepted on Boeing B737 aircraft only in a maximum of 5.31 m (17 ft.) nylon bag with a total weight of 100 lbs) .

If you require additional information or packaging instructions, you can find here information about fees, the amount allowed, and packaging instructions for: bicycles and helmets, golf clubs, hockey, ringette, lacrosse and football equipment, scuba gears, skateboards, longboards, and scooters, skis, water skis and snowboards, sports balls, sports racquets and surfboards and windsurfers.

Baggage Service

If your baggage is delayed, missing, or damaged , you should contact WestJet immediately . If your baggage is delayed, you have a maximum of 21 days to report it to WestJet. A WestJet representative will create a delayed baggage report. If the issue is damaged baggage, you should report it within 7 days.

Carry-on luggage and personal item size limits (2024).

Just like checked bags, carry-on luggage size restrictions can vary by airline.

Carry-on Luggage Sizes by Airline

westjet travel carry on restrictions

Key Takeaways

  • The carry-on size limit for many airlines is 22 x 14 x 9 inches.
  • Most domestic airlines do not have a weight limit for carry-on bags.
  • You can typically bring a carry-on bag in addition to a personal item.
  • Your personal item should be able to fit neatly under the seat in front of you.

If you're traveling with carry-on luggage and/or a personal item, you'll need to adhere to size restrictions in the same way you do with checked bags . These rules include the dimensions of your carry-on bag and, in some scenarios, even the weight.

What size luggage is a carry-on?

While carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline, several major carriers go by these dimensions.

Airlines calculate carry-on luggage size measurements using two methods:

  • Height by width by depth:  Most – but not all – airlines measure bags by inches or centimeters using this formula: height by width by depth, such as 22 x 14 x 9 inches. (Note: The dimensions listed below, which are given according to that formula, may differ slightly from the way each individual airline formats its size requirements.)
  • Linear inches:  A few airlines have linear inch restrictions for carry-on baggage, meaning the airline gives one number for the total of all three dimensions. As long as the combined height, width and depth don't exceed that number, you're in the clear.

Can a 24-inch bag be a carry-on?

Yes, a 24-inch bag can be used as a carry-on suitcase when flying with the following airlines: Frontier, Southwest and Sun Country . However, if you're shopping for new carry-on luggage, it's best to opt for something that meets the requirements for most major airlines (22 x 14 x 9 inches or smaller).

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

Most major domestic airlines do not impose a weight limit on carry-on bags; however, several international airlines have weight restrictions for carry-on luggage and, in some cases, personal items.

Carry-on vs. personal item: What's the difference?

A carry-on bag is typically stored in a plane's overhead bin, while a personal item should fit under the seat in front of you. Most airlines allow economy passengers to bring one carry-on and one personal item – such as an underseat bag – at no extra cost.

Carry-on luggage sizes by airline

Click on the major domestic and international airlines below to see their carry-on luggage size restrictions in inches for economy passengers – and note that any handles and wheels on your bags count toward size limits as well.

Domestic Airlines

Alaska airlines, allegiant air, american airlines, delta air lines, frontier airlines, hawaiian airlines, southwest airlines, spirit airlines, sun country airlines, united airlines, international airlines, all nippon airways, british airways, cathay pacific, klm royal dutch airlines, qatar airways, scandinavian airlines, singapore airlines, turkish airlines, virgin atlantic.

The fee is often around $20 if you pay for your carry-on baggage at the time of booking; it costs a hefty $45 if you add a carry-on bag later – and up to $75 at the gate.

See all Allegiant Air carry-on policies.

The above rules also apply to basic economy tickets.

See all American Airlines carry-on policies.

Note that if you're flying to or from Beijing or Shanghai, there is a 22-pound weight limit for a carry-on; for Singapore, there is a 15-pound limit.

See all Delta Airlines carry-on policies.

There are two instances where the carry-on bag fee is waived:

  • You're an elite member of the  FRONTIER Miles rewards program .
  • You bought a specialty ticket like the WORKS bundle.

Also note that carry-on bag fees, which typically start at around $30, depend on your destination, and that prices are cheapest if you add baggage when you make your booking. You'll pay more to add it later, especially if you do so at the airport. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to purchase a checked bag instead of a carry-on.

If you booked a Blue Basic ticket, you're only permitted to bring a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. If you bring a carry-on bag, you will have to pay $65 to check it at the gate (or up to $180 if you've already checked two other bags). However, select customers with Blue Basic fares can bring carry-on bags for free. These include:

  • Active U.S. military personnel
  • Unaccompanied minors
  • Customers flying to London

If you purchase a higher-class seat or if you reach Mosaic status on JetBlue's TrueBlue rewards program , you can also bring a carry-on bag for free on a Blue Basic ticket.

See all JetBlue carry-on policies.

See all Southwest Airlines carry-on policies.

Spirit's carry-on bag fees vary between flights, but they tend to start at around $25 to $30 for U.S. domestic flights. If you need to bring carry-on luggage, it's always cheapest to pay for it when you first book your flight. It will cost you more to add a bag afterward – and at least double the initial fee if you do it at the airport.

See all Spirit Airlines carry-on policies.

The Sun Country Airlines fee for a carry-on bag is around $30 if you pay for it when booking, or more if you add it later.

See all Sun Country carry-on policies.

There's one notable exception for carry-on baggage with United: Passengers with a basic economy ticket can only   take one personal item on board – no carry-on bag. This policy applies to travelers flying basic economy domestically or between the U.S. and Canada. If you have a basic economy ticket and are going to Central or South America (including Mexico) or taking trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flights, you can bring a full-size carry-on bag.

See all United Airlines carry-on policies.

Aer Lingus' carry-on policy depends on where you're flying. For trans-Atlantic flights, you can bring one carry-on bag within the dimensions above, plus a small personal item for free. If you're flying within Europe on Aer Lingus, the rules are a bit different: You'll have to pay a fee to bring a carry-on with you on board, starting at 5.99 euros. However, you can check that same bag for free.

If you're flying Aer Lingus Regional (a service with smaller planes, flying mostly around Ireland and the U.K.), a smaller carry-on limit applies: 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches, with a weight limit of 15 pounds.

See all Aer Lingus carry-on policies.

All Aeroméxico customers can bring a standard carry-on bag and a personal item on board. Be careful with the weight limit, though: For international flights or basic fare flights within Mexico, these two items combined cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. So, if your carry-on bag weighs 15 pounds, for example, your personal item cannot be more than 7 pounds.

See all Aeroméxico carry-on policies.

While there's no weight limit for carry-on luggage, Air Canada says your carry-on bag should be light enough that it can easily be lifted into the overhead bin. Also note that airport purchases (for example, larger duty-free items) count toward your baggage limit.

See all Air Canada carry-on policies.

Note that both your personal item and carry-on bag (referred to as "hand baggage") combined must not weigh more than 26 pounds if you're traveling economy. The weight limit is 40 pounds for premium economy and other higher-class cabins.

See all Air France carry-on policies.

A variety of personal items (think a handbag and umbrella) are permitted as long as they fit under the seat in front of you; this includes any items purchased at the airport.

If airline staff put a yellow tag on your bag, it should be stored under the seat in front of you.

See all British Airways carry-on policies.

Cathay Pacific has shifted from a weight allowance to a piece allowance, and this policy varies by itinerary. Passengers are generally permitted to bring one carry-on bag plus a small personal item (and assistive devices like a walking stick), but it's best to check your booking carefully to confirm the exact allowance. You're asked to check in any baggage that's too heavy to lift into the overhead compartment.

See all Cathay Pacific carry-on policies.

Since easyJet is a budget airline, standard fares only allow customers to bring one personal item (called a "small cabin bag") aboard for free. Fees for standard carry-on bags are between 5.99 and 32.99 British pounds, depending on your destination and when you add an extra bag to your reservation.

See all easyJet carry-on policies.

The above rules apply to all economy passengers except those traveling from Brazil, whose carry-on luggage can weigh up to 22 pounds. Emirates only allows economy passengers to bring one item on board; whether you bring a carry-on bag for the overhead bin or a personal item to tuck under the seat, this bag must comply with the size limits.

See all Emirates carry-on policies.

Be aware that the 22-pound weight limit applies to both your personal item and carry-on combined. If your flight was booked through Iberia but is operated by Vueling, similar rules apply, but the size limits for your carry-on bags are slightly smaller.

See all Iberia carry-on policies.

If you're traveling on the cheaper Light ticket, you may be asked to check your carry-on bag for no extra cost, if space is limited.

The above rules apply to LowFare+ customers. Passengers who fly LowFare (comparable to Basic Economy fare) can only bring a personal item (underseat bag) measuring 15 x 11.5 x 7.5 inches.

See all Norwegian carry-on policies.

Qantas

Economy passengers can opt to bring a nonrigid garment bag measuring 45 x 24 x 4 inches (or 73 linear inches) instead of a standard 22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on bag. The above rules apply to all economy tickets and vary for higher classes on international and domestic flights with Qantas.

See all Qantas carry-on luggage policies.

Qatar Airways allows passengers to bring multiple personal items provided they fit under the seat in front of you. Unlike with other airlines, laptops and laptop bags do not count as personal items and must fit within your main hand baggage allowance. For tickets issued in Brazil, the carry-on weight limit is 22 pounds.

Be careful: Qatar doesn't accept carry-ons longer than 20 inches, which is shorter than many other airlines.

See all Qatar Airways carry-on policies.

Ryanair is a low-cost carrier, so unless you pay extra, you can only bring one small bag that fits under the seat in front of you, per the personal item guidelines above. To bring a larger carry-on bag, travelers need to purchase Ryanair's Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, which typically costs between 6 and 32 euros depending on your destination.

Most (but not all) Scandinavian Airlines fares allow you to bring one traditional carry-on bag, plus a personal item, which SAS calls an "underseat bag." There's one exception: Passengers traveling within Europe on the Go Light fare must pay for a larger carry-on bag. If you booked a Go Light ticket for intercontinental flights, a carry-on bag is included.

See all Scandinavian Airlines carry-on policies.

Singapore Airlines has an unusual method for measuring carry-on bags – the dimensions of the bag must not add up to more than 45 linear inches total. For example, a bag measuring 15 x 15 x 15 inches would be suitable. All passengers can bring one bag of this size, plus a smaller personal item. The personal item, whose dimensions are specified above, does not count toward the 15-pound carry-on limit.

Virgin Atlantic lets every passenger bring a carry-on bag, including children younger than age 2. You can bring a bag weighing no more than 13 pounds for your child, in addition to a collapsible stroller and/or car seat. Each passenger is also allowed to bring a handbag or small backpack, an umbrella, a walking stick and airport purchases. Take note: Laptops do not count as personal items on Virgin Atlantic and should fit into your main carry-on bag. There's no specific size limit on the other personal items, but bags or airport purchases should fit under the seat in front of you.

Note that the above rules apply to passengers who book a TimeFlex or Premium Fare, as well as anyone traveling with a child under age 2 and/or requiring special assistance at the airport.

Whether you’re flying domestically or internationally, every airline has its own carry-on luggage size restrictions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, so you need to check your airline’s specific policy before traveling to ensure your carry-on bag isn’t rejected with potential additional charges.

Below, you’ll find a helpful chart detailing the most popular airlines’ carry-on restrictions, including the size and weight of a standard carry-on, and whether this varies due to the cabin you’re traveling in. We’ve also covered checked luggage sizes and allowances , too.

Don’t forget that there are many ways to avoid paying for baggage fees such as carry-ons and that’s what we cover in our in-depth article.

In some cases, you’ll see that the airline has a rule about maximum linear dimensions. That means that, when you add the length, width, and depth of a piece of luggage together, the sum can’t exceed a certain number. For example, if you have a suitcase that’s 28 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 18 inches deep, the linear dimensions would total 66 inches, too big for many airlines.

Carry-On Luggage Size Chart for Major Airlines

Unless specified, the maximum weight allowance is across your standard carry-on luggage and personal item combined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is considered carry-on luggage.

There’s no industry standard for sizes for carry-on luggage, with every airline assigning their own size and weight restrictions. If you want to purchase a carry-on bag that would be accepted by most airlines, then the most common maximum size would be 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including handles and wheels.

Which carry-on luggage is best?

The best carry-on bag depends on your own requirements. For example, do you need a wheelie case or a backpack, or a bag with a laptop compartment or built-in security? We’ve rounded up what we consider the best carry-on luggage bags for any traveler , ranging from soft-sided and hardshell wheelies to convenient backpacks.

Is a backpack considered carry-on?

A backpack would be considered a carry-on item if it adheres to the maximum size restrictions of a specific airline. Most airlines have a larger size allowance for a standard carry-on piece and slightly smaller one for a personal item (where permitted).

What is not allowed in a carry-on bag?

For safety reasons, there are certain items that are prohibited to be stored in carry-on luggage. These include individual containers with liquids over 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or a combined amount of liquids over 1 quart (1 liter); sharp objects such as scissors, blades, or pen knives; firearms; sporting equipment such as baseball bats or hockey sticks; tools; and lighters, matches, or other flammable items.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on luggage?

As with size restrictions, there are no industry standards for maximum weight allowances for carry-on luggage. These are defined by each individual airline, with some airlines actually not publishing a specific weight restriction — just that you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead compartment yourself.

It’s also worth checking whether the airline’s stated weight allowance applies just to your carry-on piece or whether it applies to the combined weight of your carry-on and personal item.

What is the difference between a personal item and carry-on?

Many airlines allow passengers to bring a personal item in addition to a carry-on bag. A personal item is usually a smaller bag, such as handbag, briefcase, or laptop bag , that can be stored under the seat in front of you. Some airlines specify size and weight restrictions for personal items, while many don’t specify maximum sizes or weights.

What is hand baggage only?

If you’ve booked a “hand baggage only” fare (sometimes referred to as a basic fare), this means that you may only bring hand baggage that is within the airline’s restrictions. No checked baggage is included. Depending on your airline, hand baggage may include 1 standard carry-on bag and 1 smaller personal item. Each airline sets its own size and weight restrictions for carry-on, so check the table above for more information.

What does TSA allow for carry-on?

TSA allows passengers to pack certain items in their carry-on baggage and prohibits others. Liquids may be brought on board under the 3-1-1 rule: a maximum of 3.4 ounces per container up to a total of 1 quart, stored within a clear, zip-top bag, with 1 bag permitted per passenger. Exemptions to this rule are made for infant necessities or required medication. Items such as lighters, blades, and baseball bats are not permitted in your carry-on.

See more information in our guide to how to easily get through TSA airport security .

What is the standard size of a carry-on bag?

There are no universal standards for carry-on baggage, with each airline setting its own size and weight restrictions. If you want to purchase a bag that adheres to most airline standards, then look for a case that’s no larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including all handles and wheels.

Can I take my phone charger in my carry-on?

General chargers for electronic devices can be packed as carry-on or into your checked baggage . If you’re using a portable power bank , then most airlines require you to pack this in your carry-on bag. This is because of the risk of lithium batteries catching fire in the hold.

Is a 24-inch suitcase a carry-on?

A 24-inch suitcase would be considered a carry-on by some airlines — but not all. Some airlines state maximum linear dimension only, so as long as your other 2 measurements are smaller to allow for the 24-inch length, then this would be fine. But generally, a suitcase measuring 22 x 14 x 9 inches would be the most widely accepted. This includes American Airlines and United Airlines .

Some Canadian airports have preclearance facilities where you and your baggage are cleared to enter the United States before you arrive.

If you’re taking a flight to the US that’s being precleared in Canada, you can’t pack any type of knife.

Part 3: Items that are banned from checked baggage for all flights

In Canada, you aren’t allowed to pack these items in your check baggage:

  • anything that’s illegal under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • any explosive substance, or
  • any device that can ignite

You can pack an unloaded firearm as long as it’s placed in a locked, hard-sided container. You must also declare all firearms, firearm parts, bullets and cartridges to your airline during check-in. For details on how to transport these items in your checked baggage, please contact your airline.

If you’re unsure about an item that you’d like to pack in your checked baggage, please contact your airline.

Liquids Rule

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Placing these items in the small bag and separating from your carry-on baggage facilitates the screening process. Pack items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in checked baggage.

Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening.

  • Medications
  • Infant and child nourishments

Inbound International Flights

You may carry duty free liquids in secure, tamper–evident bags, more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your carry-on bag if:

  • The duty free liquids were purchased internationally and you are traveling to the United States with a connecting flight.
  • The liquids are packed in a transparent, secure, tamper-evident bag by the retailer and do not show signs of tampering when presented to TSA for screening.
  • The original receipt for the liquids is present and the purchase was made within 48 hours.

The items inside the secure, tamper-evident bags must be screened and cleared. Any item that alarms or is unable to be screened will not be permitted in your carry-on bag. We recommend packing all liquids, gels, and aerosols that are over 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your checked baggage, even if they are in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

Liquids, Non-solid Food & Personal Items

You can make your security screening experience quicker and easier by packing your liquids, non-solid food, personal and toiletry items properly.  At the airport, these items are referred to as “liquids, aerosols and gels.”

Below you will find information on various items that fall into these categories, a list of items that are exempted from restrictions, and tips on how to pack all of them.

On this page

Examples of liquids, non-solid food and personal items that are liquids, aerosols and gels, how to pack your liquids, non-solid food and personal items, liquids/non-solid food, personal items.

  • liquid based cosmetics (e.g. mascara, liquid foundation, liquid eyeliner)
  • static remover
  • sunscreen spray

  • shaving gel
  • gel-based deodorant
  • gel-based cosmetics (e.g. gel blush, gel lip products)

Please note that if an item that is illegal in Canada (e.g. pepper spray) is found at a screening checkpoint, CATSA is required to notify the police.

  • Containers of liquids, non-solid food and personal items in your carry-on must be 100 ml/100 g (3.4 oz) or less . All containers must fit in one clear, resealable plastic bag no more than 1L in capacity. The bag must be transparent so screening officers can easily see the contents.
  • Each passenger is allowed a single 1 L bag containing liquids, food and personal items. The approximate dimensions of a 1L bag are 15.24 cm by 22.86 cm (6 in. by 9 in.) or 20 cm by 17.5 cm (8 in. by 7 in.).
  • At the screening point, take your plastic bag out of your carry-on and place it in a bin.
  • Any containers over 100 ml/100 g (3.4 oz) can be placed in your checked baggage as long as they are not prohibited items.
  • Avoid packing gifts and souvenirs containing liquids, aerosols and gels in your carry-on. These include: liquor, wine, beer, snowglobes, cans of condensed soup, maple syrup, perfume, and lotion. Put them in checked baggage or ship them separately.
  • Beverages: Drink or discard any beverages in containers of more than 100 ml before you get to security screening checkpoint.  This includes water in your personal water bottle. You can refill your container once you pass through security.
  • Duty-Free Alcohol: Be sure you know the rules for bringing duty-free alcohol as part of your carry-on baggage.
  • Non-solid food (e.g. yogurt, pudding, peanut butter, jam) in your carry-on must be in containers of 100 ml or less. All containers must fit in the same clear, closed, resealable 1 L plastic bag, along with all other containers of liquids, food or personal items you are carrying.
  • Food over 100 ml that is normally a liquid or gel but has been frozen solid will not be allowed to pass through security in your carry-on. In order for a food to be considered a solid, it must be solid at room temperature.
  • Solid food with less than 100 ml of liquid: Canned or jarred goods containing both solids and liquid that clearly contain less than 100 ml of liquid (e.g., can of tuna) are allowed. These items must fit in the same clear, closed, resealable 1 L plastic bag with all other containers of liquids, food or personal items you are carrying.
  • Food in checked baggage:  Both solid food and non-solid (over 100 ml) can go in your checked baggage; however, some restrictions may apply.

Did you know?

You can bring solid food in both carry-on and checked baggage. See Travelling with Food Items  for more detail.

You can pack alcoholic beverages (including homemade wine and beer, and commercial products) in your checked baggage if:

  • The percentage of alcohol by volume is 70% (140 proof) or less.
  • The quantity does not exceed five litres per person for alcoholic beverages between 24% and 70% alcohol by volume.

Alcoholic beverages containing 24% alcohol or less are not subject to limitations on quantities.

Duty-free alcohol: See Duty-Free Purchases .

Check the Canadian Border Services Agency website for personal exemption amounts on alcoholic beverages.

Personal items are allowed in carry-on baggage if they comply with the liquid restrictions. Some restrictions also apply to personal items in checked baggage.

The following items are allowed in limited quantities in your checked baggage:

  • Insect repellent (limit of one aerosol canister per person)
  • Aerosol items that are toiletry articles (e.g. hair spray, perfumes, cologne, aerosol deodorant)

Aerosols are subject to a maximum limit of 500 ml/500 g per container , with a total net quantity not exceeding 2 L/2 kg. Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of the contents.

Some items are exempted from the 100 ml or 100 g (3.4 oz) limit and do not have to be placed in a plastic bag. However, you must declare these items to the screening officer for inspection. The exceptions are:

  • Baby food/drink: If you are travelling with an infant younger than two years of age (0-24 months), baby food, milk, liquid formula, water and juice are allowed in quantities greater than 100 ml .
  • Breast milk: Passengers flying with or without their child can bring breast milk in quantities greater than 100 ml
  • Prescription medicines are allowed.
  • Essential non-prescription medicines , such as homeopathic products, pain relieving medication, cough syrup, decongestant spray, gel-based nutritional supplements, saline solution or eye care products, are allowed.
  • COVID-19 test kits are permitted without restrictions in carry-on and checked baggage.
  • Gel and ice packs are allowed, if they are needed to treat an injury, to refrigerate baby food, milk, breast milk, formula, water and juice for infants younger than two years of age (0-24 months), or to preserve medically necessary items or medication
  • Liquids/gels for diabetes: Juice or gels are allowed if you need them for diabetic or other medical conditions.
  • Distilled water for CPAP devices: The distilled water needed to operate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices is exempt from liquid restrictions.

Documentation to support your medical needs or condition is not required; however, if you feel that it would help ease your screening, it should be presented to the screening officer along with your medically necessary items.

Carry-on Luggage and Personal Item Size Limits (2024)

Text Callout : Key Takeaways - Carry-on Luggage Sizes

Alaska Airlines

See all Alaska Airlines carry-on policies.

Allegiant Air

The fee is often around $20 if you pay for your carry-on baggage at the time of booking; it costs a hefty $45 if you add a carry-on bag later – and up to $75 at the gate.

See all Allegiant Air carry-on policies.

American Airlines

The above rules also apply to basic economy tickets.

See all American Airlines carry-on policies.

Delta Air Lines

Note that if you're flying to or from Beijing or Shanghai, there is a 22-pound weight limit for a carry-on; for Singapore, there is a 15-pound limit.

See all Delta Airlines carry-on policies.

Frontier Airlines

There are two instances where the carry-on bag fee is waived:

  • You're an elite member of the  FRONTIER Miles rewards program .
  • You bought a specialty ticket like the WORKS bundle.

Also note that carry-on bag fees, which typically start at around $30, depend on your destination, and that prices are cheapest if you add baggage when you make your booking. You'll pay more to add it later, especially if you do so at the airport. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to purchase a checked bag instead of a carry-on.

See all Frontier Airlines carry-on policies.

Hawaiian Airlines

See all Hawaiian Airlines carry-on policies.

Southwest Airlines

See all Southwest Airlines carry-on policies.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit's carry-on bag fees vary between flights, but they tend to start at around $25 to $30 for U.S. domestic flights. If you need to bring carry-on luggage, it's always cheapest to pay for it when you first book your flight. It will cost you more to add a bag afterward – and at least double the initial fee if you do it at the airport.

See all Spirit Airlines carry-on policies.

Sun Country Airlines

The Sun Country Airlines fee for a carry-on bag is around $30 if you pay for it when booking, or more if you add it later.

See all Sun Country carry-on policies.

United Airlines

All Nippon Airways

A variety of personal items (think a handbag and umbrella) are permitted as long as they fit under the seat in front of you; this includes any items purchased at the airport.

See all All Nippon Airways carry-on policies.

British Airways

If airline staff put a yellow tag on your bag, it should be stored under the seat in front of you.

See all British Airways carry-on policies.

Cathay Pacific

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

If you're traveling on the cheaper Light ticket, you may be asked to check your carry-on bag for no extra cost, if space is limited.

See all KLM Royal Dutch Airlines carry-on policies.

See all Lufthansa carry-on policies.

Qatar Airways

See all Ryanair carry-on policies.

360 Kiosk Email : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Scandinavian Airlines

Most (but not all) Scandinavian Airlines fares allow you to bring one traditional carry-on bag, plus a personal item, which SAS calls an "underseat bag." There's one exception: Passengers traveling within Europe on the Go Light fare must pay for a larger carry-on bag. If you booked a Go Light ticket for intercontinental flights, a carry-on bag is included.

See all Scandinavian Airlines carry-on policies.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has an unusual method for measuring carry-on bags – the dimensions of the bag must not add up to more than 45 linear inches total. For example, a bag measuring 15 x 15 x 15 inches would be suitable. All passengers can bring one bag of this size, plus a smaller personal item. The personal item, whose dimensions are specified above, does not count toward the 15-pound carry-on limit.

See all Singapore Airlines carry-on policies.

Turkish Airlines

See all Turkish Airlines carry-on policies.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic lets every passenger bring a carry-on bag, including children younger than age 2. You can bring a bag weighing no more than 13 pounds for your child, in addition to a collapsible stroller and/or car seat. Each passenger is also allowed to bring a handbag or small backpack, an umbrella, a walking stick and airport purchases. Take note: Laptops do not count as personal items on Virgin Atlantic and should fit into your main carry-on bag. There's no specific size limit on the other personal items, but bags or airport purchases should fit under the seat in front of you.

See all Virgin Atlantic carry-on policies.

Note that the above rules apply to passengers who book a TimeFlex or Premium Fare, as well as anyone traveling with a child under age 2 and/or requiring special assistance at the airport.

WestJet issues lockout notice to mechanics' union

Calgary-based airline and union have been negotiating new contract since september.

WestJet has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the union representing the Calgary-based airline's mechanics. The notice paves the way for a work stoppage to begin on Tuesday.

Last week, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), which represents the carrier's aircraft maintenance engineers, announced that members would begin taking a strike vote on May 2.

Voting will continue until May 9.

WestJet and the AMFA have been negotiating a new contract since September 2023.

In a Saturday morning email to employees, Diederik Pen, WestJet's president and chief operating officer, said work stoppages could begin as early as Tuesday at noon MT.

"We did not take this action without careful consideration. AMFA publicly issued a strike vote alert last week and actively encouraged guests to fly other carriers several times," the email said.

Pen said if the work stoppage can't be avoided, WestJet is prepared to take the following steps:

  • Operating under a reduced schedule.
  • Proactively managing changes and cancellations and ensuring communications with passengers in advance of their flights.
  • Implementing flexible change and cancel options for passengers who wish to make alternate arrangements.

Pen also advised WestJet workers to refrain from booking employee travel.

"Rest assured our focus remains at the bargaining table and we believe, with a commitment from both parties, an agreement is achievable," Pen wrote to employees.

AMFA regional director Will Abbott, who chairs the union's WestJet-AMFA negotiating committee, told CBC News that the lockout notice was "not unexpected."

"We feel that it's unfortunate that it comes to this, but we remain to negotiate in good faith. Nothing is going to be resolved until we get to the finish line. What needs to be done is a collective bargaining agreement that both sides can live with," he said.

Issues remain benefits and pay

Abbott says the biggest outstanding issues are what he calls "quality-of-life issues," including benefits and pay.

"We also have to make sure that we have language that protects the jobs that you do. You can have all the money in the world, but if you don't have the language to protect your job, you're not going to earn," he said.

In a statement posted Saturday to the airline's website, Pen defended the airline's latest offer to the union.

  • WestJet Encore pilots announce tentative deal in labour dispute with regional carrier
  • WestJet's St. John's-to-London route goes live — sparking anger over affordable air travel within N.L.

"The WestJet Group has presented an offer to AMFA that would make WestJet aircraft maintenance engineers the highest paid in Canada, with a cumulative wage increase of over 20 per cent across the span of the collective agreement. The offer would also deliver industry leading work-life balance standards and strong commitments to job security," the statement said.

"We sincerely value the work and contributions of our aircraft maintenance engineers, and our proposed agreement reflects this. We are unwaveringly committed to reaching an agreement to prevent travel disruption, however, we are equally prepared to protect the travel plans of our guests and to provide long-term stability and security for all employees at the WestJet Group."

Abbott says AMFA plans to keep negotiating, despite the lockout notice. When asked to rate the chances of Tuesday's work stoppage being avoided, he said he was the wrong person to ask.

"I didn't serve the lockout, so I can say that question would be in WestJet's court."
