College Info

feature_internationalstudents.png

Each year, nearly one million international students enroll in US undergraduate and graduate programs. There are so many colleges and universities in the US, though, that it can be tough to know where to start, especially if you're applying from out of the country.

In this post, I'll lay out some of the best universities for international students. Whether you're looking for generous financial aid, large international populations, or special international programs , we've got you covered.

Finally, I'll lay out the five most important steps you need to take if you want to go to school in the US, straight from the State Department.

Let's get started!

What Makes a School Good for International Students?

Applying to college is stressful for students all over the world. If you're looking to attend an international school, particularly one that's located in the US, there are a few additional, unique obstacles to worry about:

  • Funding your education. US schools are notoriously expensive, and international students aren't eligible for many forms of American financial aid.
  • Finding an environment of your peers. Although some students may not be concerned with finding a group of international peers at a US school, many may feel more comfortable with a student body composed of a healthy mix of domestic and international students. You may also find more resources, student groups, and activities geared towards students from outside the US at these schools.
  • Achieving comfort and success in a very new environment. As an international student, you may be looking for specialized social, academic, professional, and language support. Moving to a new country is stressful—it's a good idea to think about what support systems would help you transition.

Although international students may have other concerns when applying to US schools, I think the above points are the most universal.

The rest of this post will list the types of schools that address these problems, i.e. the best colleges for international students. I'll list the schools that give generous financial aid to foreign nationals, boast large percentages of international students, and offer special support to non-US citizens . Your own priorities will dictate which type of school might serve you best.

Let's get to the good stuff—which schools should you actually start checking out?

Cheapest Colleges for International Students

International students aren't eligible for federal financial aid , a big source of funding for students here in the US. Unless a school's total Cost of Attendance isn't an issue for you, you may want to consider institutions that allocate large amounts of their own financial aid money to international students. A school's generosity may help cover the deficit left by a lack of access to federal aid.

A little background information before we get started: attending college in the US is expensive . In fact, the US is one of the most expensive places in the world to get a college education. And just because a school offers financial aid doesn't mean you won't end up paying quite a bit in the long run—it's common for students in the US to be saddled with significant student loan debt . If cost is a concern for you, the following list of cheapest colleges for international students should be a great place to start your school search . They all awarded financial aid to at least 50 students from abroad for the 2020-2021 school year.

body_euromoney.jpg

A final disclaimer: the schools below are all pretty high-ranked institutions . Schools like this tend to have larger endowments and more money to give to students via financial aid. You'd have to be a very competitive applicant to gain admission to many of these schools (perhaps even more competitive than a similar domestic applicant). Click the name of the school to get more information about admissions statistics.

If you're a non-US student attending a non English-language high school, chances are that you'll need to prove your English proficiency when applying to university. Colleges in the US will sometimes accept a high SAT or ACT score as evidence of your English skills, but more often than not, passing scores on the TOEFL or IELTS are required as well.   Fortunately, our PrepScholar TOEFL product is here to help you crush the TOEFL, with a guaranteed 15-point score increase or your money back! We've taken all our test prep analysis and teaching expertise, coupled with our proprietary machine learning algorithms, to come up with the best TOEFL test prep program out there. And the best part? Colleges With the Largest International Student Presence

If you're applying to schools in the US, financial aid is likely not your only concern. You might also be wondering which colleges and universities have large international populations.

Large numbers of international students at a particular school indicate a more diverse student body. If this criterion is important to you, you'll definitely want to check out the following list of schools. Keep in mind that this list is based on the percentage of international students, and not necessarily raw numbers of international students — many large, metropolitan schools attract a significant number of students from outside the US.

You might notice that there's no overlap between the following schools and schools that provide the most financial aid to international students. If you're interested primarily in schools with a large international student presence, keep in mind they may be significantly more expensive than the institutions listed above.

Colleges With Special Services for International Students

Some of the best colleges for international students offer specialized programs that make studying in the US a bit easier for foreign nationals . The following list is by no means exhaustive, but it'll give you a place to start if you're looking for schools that offer unique, helpful services to international students.

Some of these schools have dedicated centers for international students. They provide assistance in a variety of areas, including ESL instruction and student visa guidance. Other schools foster an easier transition for international students with mentorship programs or regular faculty check-ins. You may even find specialty scholarship programs meant for students coming from other countries .

Many other schools offer resources to students both domestic and international, but the following programs are particularly notable for students coming from abroad. If you think you may need one special program in particular—ESL assistance, for example—I'd encourage you to contact the admissions office at any school of interest for more information.

University of Arizona , Tucson, AZ

U of A hosts the Center for English as a Second Language , which helps students adjust to using English in professional and academic spaces. For more general assistance, students can go to the school's dedicated International Services Center .

Finally, U of A offers an international student scholarship program. Students can receive between $5,500 and $22,000 per year.

Purdue University , West Lafayette, IN

Roughly 8,000 international students attend Purdue each year; about 4,000 of those are undergraduate, and about 4,000 are graduate students. The school publishes a quarterly newsletter for international students. Additionally, Purdue fosters an International Friendship Program where domestic students serve as mentors to ease any difficulty in transitioning to a US school.

Clemson University , Clemson, SC

About 1,500 international students enroll at Clemson each year. The school requires regular meetings between international students and staff to make sure students are happy and successful. Clemson also offers group workshops that help international students gather information about maintaining status, employment possibilities, travel and visas, and cultural adjustment.

University of Wisconsin—Madison , Madison, WI

About 4,000 students from more than 120 different countries attend the University of Wisconsin. The school hosts a couple of notable programs.

First, the BRIDGE (Building Relationships in Diverse Global Environments) program connects international students with US students during their first year in the US.

Second, the Assembly of International Students connects the many international groups on campus to promote cultural awareness and understanding within the student body.

Temple University , Philadelphia, PA

Temple offers some alternative options to students who may not be ready for a fully English-immersive experience in the US. Their Intensive English Language Program is an educational program that preps students to enroll at a US school or to get a job that requires English proficiency. It is NOT a BA program, but a pre-program of sorts to prepare students for further study.

Temple also offers " provisional/conditional admission " to competitive applicants who score below admissions threshold on the TOEFL.

What Do You Have to Do to Attend a US School?

As an international student, you'll have to take a few extra steps if you plan on studying in the US. You'll want to do your own research on any further steps or restrictions for students coming from your particular country, but I'll give you a basic rundown here, so you know where to start, and you can check out our complete guide to the process for more details.

body_americanflag.jpg

According to the US State Department , here are the five steps you need to take to study in the US:

Step 1: Research Your Options

If you're reading this page, you've already begun this step! You'll want to start this process 12-18 months before the start of the academic year you hope to start studying in the US. It's especially important to gather information about application criteria and deadlines.

If you need some extra help getting started, you should check out our guide on how to research colleges .

Step 2: Finance Your Studies

Again, you've already started gathering info on financing your studies if you've checked out the schools at the top of the page. Like I mentioned, schools can be pretty expensive in the US , so you'll want to have a plan in place for funding your education .

Read more about the different types of financial aid and the schools with the most generous aid policies .

Step 3: Complete Your College Applications

Each college app is unique, although there's generally a lot of overlap. It's important to start these applications well before the deadlines (which are often December-January). You might want to read more about the typical college application timeline .

As an international applicant, you'll want to be especially careful about arranging for the SAT, ACT , and/or TOEFL . You may not have to submit your TOEFL scores to some colleges if you meet a certain score threshold on SAT/ACT sections.

Read more about SAT and ACT prep for ESL and bilingual students to help plan for these important parts of US college applications and find out your best international SAT and ACT test dates .

Step 4: Apply for Your Student Visa

It's important to allocate plenty of time to complete and submit your visa application, in case any complications come up. Visit the State Department's website for more information on applying for your visa.

Step 5: Prepare for Your Departure

This is where you square everything away and make sure all your travel arrangements and documents are ready to go and in compliance. Your new school may also have information available for things like student health insurance, climate, local transportation options, and housing.

What's Next?

Motivated to start working on your college applications? Great! But before you do, you should definitely figure out which standardized test— the SAT or the ACT —is better for you (did you know that it doesn't usually help to take both)?

You might need to do ACT/SAT prep a little differently than the typical US student. For an introduction, read our complete guide to the ACT & SAT for international students . Then, check out our list of current international SAT and ACT test dates to see which date is right for you.

Not sure what steps you need to take to apply to college in the US as non-US citizen? We have blog articles to help you with everything from what different materials you need for your application to how to get financial aid if you have a green card .

32 Questions to Ask on a College Visit

Students should feel free to ask questions during an information session or on tour.

Questions to Ask on a College Visit

Prospective students should conduct at least basic research to facilitate questions to ask during the information session or on tour, experts say.

Key Takeaways

  • Before a campus visit, students should do basic research on the school.
  • Students and their families have various opportunities to ask questions.
  • No question is dumb.

College visits, whether in person or virtual, can help give prospective students a better feel of campus life.

Contrary to popular belief, however, students don’t need to have that “a-ha” moment when they eventually find the campus where they belong, says Thyra Briggs, vice president for admission and financial aid at Harvey Mudd College in California.

“I just don't think that happens for most students,” she says. “I don't want students to walk away from a visit where that didn't happen thinking, ‘Oh, this is not the place for me.’ This is a long-term relationship. It's not necessarily love at first sight. … In this age of instant gratification, I think it's an important thing to give a school a chance to affect you in a different way.”

For an in-person visit, families should prepare ahead of time by checking the weather and dressing comfortably as tours are mostly held outside.

"Leave plenty of time at an individual campus and allow yourself to enjoy the experience, be present in the moment and (don't) feel rushed because that could also skew your perception of things," says Bryan Gross, vice president for enrollment management at Hartwick College in New York.

It’s also important, experts say, to conduct at least basic research on the institution – even if it’s just looking at their social media accounts – to help facilitate questions to ask during the information session or on tour.

"We know that for some of you, this may be the first time you are going through this," Briggs says. "For others, it's a different student (going through the process) than the student you had who's older. So there’s no bad questions. ... I would hope that any college would welcome any question a student would ask.”

Here are 32 example questions, collected from college admissions and enrollment professions, that students don't always think to ask on college visits. These questions – edited for length or clarity – were provided by Briggs, Gross and Brian Lindeman, assistant vice president of admissions and financial aid at Macalester College  in Minnesota.

Questions About Admissions

  • Does this school consider demonstrated interest?
  • Is there an opportunity for prospective students to sit in on a class to experience a real lecture?
  • Are there options to receive a lunch or dinner pass at the dining hall to try the food?

Questions About Academics

  • Where do students typically study?
  • How does advising work?
  • What are the academic strengths of this school?
  • What opportunities are there for study abroad and exchange programs?
  • If available, are these global programs directly run by this school – where faculty members travel with students – or are these study abroad programs outsourced to a third-party company?
  • Are these study abroad experiences built into the tuition or are there additional fees to participate?

Questions About Financial Aid

  • What is this school's average financial aid package?
  • What is the average net cost when students enroll?
  • What is the current level of funding with endowed scholarships – how much are donors contributing to scholarships?
  • Do you offer merit aid ? If so, what are you looking for in a candidate?

Questions About Campus Housing and Community

  • What are the housing options?
  • What are the fee structures for these different options?
  • Are students required to live on campus ?
  • How does your campus define diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging?

Questions to Ask Your Tour Guide to Gauge Campus Life

  • What surprised you about this school? What's something you didn't expect?
  • What keeps you coming back to this school each year?
  • Have we seen your favorite place on campus?
  • What event on campus gets the biggest turnout every year?
  • If you were struggling with an issue, would you know who to turn to? Who would that be?

Questions About Work and Research Opportunities

  • What are the opportunities for undergraduate research on campus?
  • How do those research opportunities give students valuable hands-on experiences that enhance their resumes?
  • What are some specific ways this school helps students gain hands-on experience through internships ?

Questions About Student and Career Outcomes

  • What is the retention rate from freshman to sophomore year?
  • What is the five-year graduation rate?
  • What is the job-attainment rate of graduates within six months of graduating?
  • What percent of students are going on to graduate school ?
  • What percent of students are intentionally taking time off post-graduation compared to those who are not able to find jobs?
  • What size is the alumni network?
  • How are alumni actively engaging with recent graduates to help connect them specifically to opportunities in their fields?

Team helps international college students navigate u.s. banking system.

Group of students on a college campus

Campus Banking program serves students from around the world at universities across the United States

When students from other countries come to the U.S. for college, they often need to set up domestic bank accounts to pay their tuition and other expenses, and U.S. Bank has a team with years of experience assisting students from around the world.

Woman standing

U.S. Bank has forged partnerships with 35 colleges and universities to provide students with access to financial education and banking services, said Kari Martindale, who has managed the campus banking programs for 24 years.

“I love serving students and have a blast doing it,” Martindale said.

Through those partnerships, U.S. Bank provides information and assistance at international orientation events, offers seminars on how banks in the United States operate differently than in other countries, how different accounts meet different needs for students and how the account-opening process works.

The international orientation events are generally held in August and January, the two times a year when schools see the biggest influxes of new students, Martindale said.

The majority of international students that open accounts with U.S. Bank come from India or China, she said, but U.S. Bank representatives are able to help students from countries across the globe.

“When international students open accounts, they typically don’t have to have a Social Security number but they are required to fill out IRS forms that can be confusing,” Martindale said. “The form will ask for their foreign taxpaying ID number and they may have no idea what that means. We’ve worked with students long enough to know that in India it’s a PAN and in China it’s an INN. We have a cheat sheet for every country so we always have guidance for any student.”

Installing online banking apps can be more complex for international students, and U.S. Bank campus banking teams are equipped to help with that as well, she said.

“Regardless of what country the students are from, everyone in this age group is very tech-savvy,” Martindale said. “Once we get them onto the app, they know how to use it.”

In her 24 years in campus banking, Martindale has helped drive a number of changes, she said, including petitioning for the addition of foreign language translation services on U.S. Bank ATMs.

“I will continue to advocate for international students and students in general,” she said.

  • Proof of payment of the visa fee.

Important: A person in initial E-3 status can enter the U.S. up to 10 days before the E-3 start date

Canadian Citizens do not need to apply for a visa. You can enter the U.S. using your original and signed TN letter provided by the department.

Important: A person in initial TN status can enter the U.S. up to 10 days before the TN start date.

Immediate family members (spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21) who will come with you to the U.S. may apply for dependent visas. You need to bring documents that prove your relationship. These can include a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or official family registry.

If your dependents go to the visa interview alone, they will need to bring copies of all the documents listed above for your visa category.

If all goes according to plan, you will receive a visa stamp in your passport. Congratulations! Check your visa for errors before you leave the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

You may not enter the U.S. on your F-1 or J-1 visa more than 30 days prior to the report date on your I-20/DS-2019. Keep in mind the visa itself does not guarantee admission into the U.S.; all other documents must be in order as well .

Individuals entering the U.S. in H-1B/O-1/E-3/TN status may enter the U.S. no more than 10 days before their start date.

Please contact ISSS if you received a late visa appointment and will not be able to enter the U.S. by the report date on your I-20/DS-2019, or if your visa application has been denied.

Note: For J-1 visa holders, the U.S. Embassies may put your DS-2019 in a sealed envelope and staple it to your passport. We recommended that you do not open this envelope. The Immigration officer at the U.S. port-of-entry will open it and check your documents when you arrive.

If you have difficulty scheduling your visa appointment due to an unforeseen situation, such as a funeral or medical emergency, you may request an Expedited Visa Interview . Check the instructions posted on your U.S. Embassy website to schedule visa interviews. You will have to provide proof of your need for an early appointment.

Your I-20/DS2019 start date provides the necessary information you need to demonstrate your start date at UMD. Feel free to use our visa expedition letter if you feel it will assist your immigration case.

  • Administrative Processing    The U.S. Embassy may inform you your visa requires Administrative Processing. This means the consular officer needs more information before deciding to issue you a visa. Administrative processing can result in significant delays in visa issuance. Contact us and your UMD department if you will be unable to arrive for the start of your program.
  • Visa Denial    Contact us if your visa application has been denied

You only need the visa stamp in your passport to enter into the United States. Once you are in the U.S. the visa stamp may expire as long as you have:

  • A passport that is valid for at least six months into the future
  • An unexpired I-20 (for F-1s) or DS-2019 (for J-1s)
  • An I-94 that indicates D/S (F-1 and J-1 only) or a date into the future
  • A valid I-797 Approval Notice or valid I-94 for H-1B, O-1, E-3 or TN

If you leave the country, you will need to apply for a new visa before returning to the United States.

Best College Towns Throughout the U.S.

C ollege towns make great places to live. Besides being filled with youthful energy made anew by each incoming class of students, they are often filled with restaurants, shops and cultural attractions that attract this younger population.

But their gain is ours as well. Live music, museums, theater and academic lectures are all offered in a setting straight out of a storybook. And let's not forget game days during basketball or football seasons when sports fans, decked out in school colors, take over to cheer on their favorite teams.

Numerous sources like to pick the best of these towns. Far & Wide combined lists from USA Today, College Ranker, Best College Reviews, Best Value Schools and others to highlight the best college towns in every state that are all worth a visit.

Alabama: Tuscaloosa

Population:  99,390

Home to:  Stillman College, Shelton State Community College, University of Alabama

Where to stay:   Embassy Suites by Hilton Tuscaloosa Alabama Downtown

Bottom line: One of the largest schools in the country, the University of Alabama, calls Tuscaloosa home. There are nearly 40,000 people enrolled in college here — nearly a quarter of the town's population!

Rated one of the  most livable cities  in the U.S., as well as one of the  best places for young people , Tuscaloosa's population hovers near 100,000. And just watch out, come football season, when everyone takes to the streets in support of the town's beloved Crimson Tide.

Alaska: Fairbanks

Population:  31,551

Home to:  University of Alaska Fairbanks

Where to stay:   SpringHill Suites by Marriott Fairbanks

Bottom line: The sense of community found in Fairbanks is so strong that  Livability  ranks it at No. 4 of all college towns. There are only 32,000 people in this northern town, with just over 8,300 of them attending the University of Alaska. The small population keeps its residents close-knit.

This is not a place for the weak: Temperatures can reach 40 degrees below zero — when you'll find students in their swimsuits taking photos in front of the weather sign.

Arizona: Tempe

Population:  187,454

Home to:  Arizona State University, Rio Salado College, University of Advancing Technology

Where to stay:  Tempe Mission Palms, a Destination by Hyatt Hotel

Bottom line: There are more than 42,000 students residing in Tempe — one of the largest populations of students in the country. With 16 different colleges and universities in the area, including Arizona State University, it is easy to see why the median age here is 29.

Large employers in Tempe include State Farm, Wells Fargo and the university itself.

Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences goes ‘On Tour’

Multi-city road tour aims to meet prospective students across texas.

April 3, 2024 - by Cynthia Casteneda

The Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences , AGLS, has hit the road to meet prospective and admitted students across Texas with its inaugural AGLS on Tour series , which started on March 25 and continues through April 14.

AGLS on Tour planned stops in McAllen, San Antonio, Katy, College Station, Fort Worth, Dallas, Tyler and Amarillo. Jeffrey W. Savell, Ph.D., vice chancellor and dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences, alongside other leaders and students from across the College, is attending every stop of the tour to engage with potential future Aggies.

A man in a maroon button down and navy pants speaks with a microphone on a stage in front of the letters "AGLS" that are illuminated by small light bulbs.

To register for the remaining tour stops in Fort Worth on April 4, Dallas on April 5, Tyler on April 9 or Amarillo on April 14, visit tx.ag/AGLSinvite .

“AGLS on Tour helps us find and create a personal connection with the best and brightest future generation of Aggies,” Savell said. “We are actively reaching out to the prospective students in hopes of introducing them to our supportive atmosphere and showing them how we are a home for learning, discovery and innovation.”

A time for connection and community

Representing 15 departments and various degree programs, the tour gives admitted and prospective students an interpersonal opportunity to discover how the College can help them reach their career and life goals. In addition to engaging and meeting College leadership and faculty, they will gain insights from current students about their college experiences.

“This tour provides students with an authentic insight into life within our College,” said Robert Sturdivant, development program coordinator, who has been instrumental in making the tour a reality. “Being able to speak with students in person has been impactful. They get to ask questions, meet Aggies and, most importantly, see how a degree from our College is more than education — it’s a lifelong support network.”

A line of ten people linked together with their arms behind each others backs as they lean to the right.

Each tour stop lasts four hours, with the first two hours reserved for admitted students and their parents, followed by an open session for any prospective students and their parents. From learning about classes to getting to the most out of the college experience, attendees have a chance to see how the College serves as a launchpad for the next generation of agriculture and life sciences leaders.

“The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is outstanding in many ways, but the people are truly what make it special,” shared Savell. “This tour is to meaningfully connect with students and their parents and directly hear from them, and forge relationships we hope will last a lifetime.”

Thanks to the College of Agriculture Development Council , admitted student attendees are entered into a drawing for a competitive academic scholarship. Light refreshments and appetizers are also provided.

Students and employees of the University of Amsterdam protest against the war in Gaza.

Why have student protests against Israel’s war in Gaza gone global?

Ceasefire and divestment calls have spread beyond US campuses, with more expected as Rafah offensive begins

University campuses around the world have been the stage of a growing number of protests by students demanding academic institutions divest from companies supplying arms to Israel .

The protests, which first spread across college campuses in the US, have reached universities in the UK, the rest of Europe , as well as Lebanon and India.

The students say they are voicing their opposition to, what they describe as, their university’s “complicity” in Israel’s assault on Gaza that has killed more than 34,700 people. Israel said its military offensive was a response to the attack by Hamas militants on 7 October, when about 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage.

More than 2,500 demonstrators have been arrested in the US so far, with protests on college campuses attracting global media attention and reaction from Palestinians trapped in the besieged Gaza.

More protests are expected, with the Israeli assault on Rafah drawing international condemnation. Some students have begun hunger strikes in protest against their university’s “silence and inaction”.

Where are the protests happening?

Demonstrations have been staged at nearly 140 college campuses in the US, spanning 45 states and Washington DC since protests began at Columbia University in New York.

Dramatic scenes unfolded at Columbia about a week ago when more than 100 students were arrested after police officers entered the campus.

The university called on the police to tackle demonstrators who had occupied Hamilton Hall, renaming it Hind’s Hall, after a six-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed in Gaza.

Afterwards, Joe Biden, rejected claims that the protests were non-violent. “Destroying property is not a peaceful protest; it’s against the law,” the US president said.

Biden added: “There is no place for hate speech or violence of any kind, whether it’s antisemitism, Islamophobia, or discrimination against Arab Americans or Palestinian Americans.”

Since then, students at about 14 UK universities have also set up encampments.

Hala Hanina, a Palestinian student who has been involved in protests at the Newcastle University, said: “It’s so important for the student community and British community that they are fighting for justice.”

More than a dozen students at Princetonand 10 students at Edinburgh have said they will begin a hunger strike in protest at their university’s policies.

Prof Peter Mathieson, the principal and vice-chancellor at Edinburgh, said: “We have very recently been notified of the intention of an unknown number of students to commence a hunger strike as an indication of their strength of feeling and determination around issues related to Palestine and Israel.

“While we recognise their bodily autonomy, we appeal to them and others not to take risks with their own health, safety and wellbeing. We are in daily contact with the protesters to ensure they are aware of the health and wellbeing support available to them.”

What is the situation in mainland Europe?

Small protests have taken place at universities including in France, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, although most were swiftly cleared by police.

The largest was at the University of Amsterdam where riot police, acting at the request of university authorities, city hall and public prosecutors, moved in early on Tuesday morning to break up an encampment that had sprung up on Monday.

Police used a mechanical digger to break down barricades of pallets and bicycles erected by the protesters and used batons to disperse the crowd – 125 of whom refused to leaveand were arrested. Most were released after a few hours.

The university said: “We share the anger and bewilderment over the war, and we understand that there are protests over it. We stress that within the university, dialogue about it is the only answer.”

What are the student protesters calling for?

Many want universities to sell off shares, assets or other investments in companies linked to Israel and its war in Gaza, a move known as divestment.

Activists say universities and colleges investing in Israeli companies or organisations doing business in Israel are “complicit” in the war in Gaza.

The protesters are also calling for a ceasefire, for universities to acknowledge the conflict in the besieged Palestinian territory as a “genocide” and to “condemn the destruction of all of Gaza’s universities”.

Some students have also fused their demands on Gaza with their calls for universities to help tackle the climate crisis.

More than 100 students occupied Ghent University in Belgium calling for concrete action to meet the institution’s 2030 climate plans, as well as demanding it cuts ties with companies connected to the Israeli military.

The university did not respond to a request for comment but its director, Rick Van de Walle, posted a statement saying its ethical policies would not change, adding: “No deviation from the existing human rights policy will be used with regard to one particular country, in this case Israel.”

How have universities responded?

There has been a varied response from academic institutions to student protests, ranging from dramatic crackdowns to negotiations.

Brown University in Rhode Island brokered an agreement with students last week that the institution’s highest governing body, the Corporation, would vote on divestment from companies affiliated with Israel during a meeting in October. In return, students cleared the encampments.

Northwestern University in Illinois and the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, have also reached agreements with students, while Columbia has called off its main graduation ceremony.

An occupation at Goldsmiths in London also came to an end after the university agreed to the students’ demands, including the renaming of a lecture hall after the Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, humanitarian scholarships for Palestinian students and a review of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism.
