T rek Marlin 5 is a phenomenal, trail-ready 29er that costs little and gets the job done on different types of surfaces, including paved and unpaved roads.

Trek is known for bikes that have good value to money, so this Marlin series model has some worthy components and does not make too many compromises.

Lightweight Alpha Silver Aluminum Frame

Trek Marlin 5 has the same Alpha Silver Aluminum frame seen on all bikes from this lineup. It is characterized by a versatile head tube angle of 69.5 degrees. That’s a good compromise between steep and slack geometry. That means this bike will perform well in most conditions, including climbing, descending, and cornering.

Light, durable, and comfortable Alpha Silver Aluminum frame is Marlin 5’s biggest selling point, seen on other more expensive bikes from Trek’s MTB lineup.

All cables are internally routed which makes them last longer and improves the overall appearance of the bike. Riders can add a rear rack and a rear kickstand, which would make Marlin 5 ready for daily commutes as well.

Springy SR Suntour Fork

Marlin 5 is equipped with a low-ranked SR Suntour XCT 30 fork with a coil spring. This fork is quite heavy but beginner riders without too much off-road experience will like it because it provides plenty of comfort.

The wheels are Bontrager Connection. They have 32 spokes, so they are quite strong, and they’re double-walled which means they can withstand some beating.

The Bontrager XR2 tires are 2.20″ wide on 27.5″ wheels. However, when it comes to 29″ wheels, the rear is narrower at 2.0″.

These wheels and tires are a bit heavier than ideal , but once you get them going, they’ll take you wherever you direct the handlebars.

My wife and I just bought 2 29 inch Lithium Gray Marlin 5 Gen 2 bikes. So far so good other than a flat tire I experienced but that’s not Treks fault by any means. We like the weight and the smooth ride it has.

Trek 5 is my 1st Mountain Bike I have been riding it 3x a week Doing some hard bush trails. It really seems to handle all trails well. No one knows that my bike isnt really expensive . They all say “love your bike ” I just love my bike but will upgrade to a better Trek when I have obtained more skills. Thanks Natalie

I am 15 and got my trek Marlin 5 a couple years ago. I have ridden some insane tracks on it and haven’t really had any issues. The only thing I’ve broken so far is the derailer hanger but apart from that nothing. I use it for riding on streets, dirt roads and mountain bike tracks of different difficulties including black diamond tracks. It is still working great and I would think of it as a good bike. I found that the seat post was originally at my good pedaling height when I got it at its lowest point but have now upgraded that to dropper.

I bought a 29″ blue Marlin 5 for my son’s 14th birthday 16 months ago and initially I really liked it. But, it’s been a flaming pile of broken parts since then. My son doesn’t abuse this bike (no downhill or big jumps) and mainly rides a few miles into town and occasional wheelies. Since new here’s the things that have broken on it: rear shifter cable, rear axle, right pedal stripped out of crank arm, left pedal stripped out of crank arm, rear axle again, right pedal stripped out of crank arm again and the chain broke (which pulled the rear rerailer into the spokes and ruined it). Our closest Trek dealer is an hour away so running to the bike store is a real issue but they have been pretty good about helping me out. I’m a metal fabricator and part time motocross bike mechanic so I have a good background in metals and how they should operate. I honestly feel Trek has build a cheap bicycle with metal parts using allows that aren’t appropriate and as thin as materials as possible to save weight at the cost of reliability. I just called Trek directly and we’ll see where that goes.

Trek alpha sizing for MTB – what is it?

The old-school approach of measuring the frame size of Trek bikes is a thing of the past. With newer inventions and modern bike geometry, alpha sizing is used in place of numeric sizing on Trek mountain bikes.

Why is alpha sizing important?

1. Easier approach

Instead of using size numbers like 19.5, the sizes can be classified into S, M, ML, L, XL, and XXL. So, someone with a 17.5 size can go for the medium and a 19.5 is a large size. You don’t have to keep a tab on numbers; instead, the alphabet makes it easier.

2. Measurement based on reach

In earlier times the frame size measurement of Trek bikes was solely based on seat tube length. Things have changed, and modern mountain bike geometry focuses more on reach as of now. Hence, alpha sizing measures what matters and is a more simplified way of measuring bike size.

Trek sizing – virtual vs actual

This can puzzle you a bit as they both are somewhat similar yet there is a subtle difference. Actual size can be termed as the overall length of the seat tube from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the top tube intersection with the centerline of the seat tube.

On the other hand, virtual sizing is the overall length of the seat tube ranging from the center of the bottom bracket to the mid-point of the imaginary horizontal top tube in which it connects with the seat tube.

It doesn’t make much of a difference as it is there only to let you know what it is (actual size) and what it looks like in size (virtual size).

Bike & Bulky Item Returns

If you wish to return your bike to us please keep it in the box it arrived in and call us on 01772 644340 and we will arrange a collection.

Please note the following:

• a) If we have sent you the incorrect bicycle, we will cover the cost of collection and delivery of the correct model.
• b) If we have delivered the bicycle you ordered, but upon inspection you decide it is not the bike for you, we will charge you £50.00 for the collection.

Please do not ride the bike as a full refund cannot be given if the bike has been used or damaged.

Return Items to a store

Any item (excluding food and underwear) can be returned to any Leisure Lakes Bikes store not just the one you made your purchase at, including those made online. The item must be returned in ‘showroom condition’, with its original packaging, tags and with a valid receipt/delivery note.

Wrong size or you don't like the item?

If returning items that are not suitable for either refund or exchange you are accountable for the delivery cost in returning it to us. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

New faulty items/ Wrong Item Received

If you have received items that are faulty or not what you ordered send them back to us (using the steps above) and we will cover the delivery cost of the return if it is within 14 days of delivery. If we have supplied the correct product, it is not faulty or it is outside of the 14 days we can not be liable for your postage charges. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

In the event that you have received items that are fault or not what you ordered, please send them back to us as soon as possible. Only in these cases will we cover the cost of the return shipping charges.

Faulty Items

If you have received items that are faulty please send them back to us using the steps above. Please include a covering letter describing the fault and if you would like the item replacing or refunding. Once the item arrives back at our Mail Order Centre you will receive an email notifying you about the progress. Faulty items are then forwarded onto the suppliers to confirm the warranty issue. Please be patient with us as we need to receive this confirmation from the suppliers before we can process your request for a replacement/refund.

When returning the item please use Royal Mail1 st Class Recorded* so that you have a tracking reference just in case! If your item arrived faulty we will refund your postage cost. If the item was in full working order at the time of delivery to you, we can not refund your return postage cost.

*In the event that you return a faulty/incorrect item we will refund your postage charge as long as it is 1 st Class Recorded or a lesser value service. We do not refund premium services.

Refunds will be processed using the same method of payment used for the original purchase. Credit and debit card refunds must be made to the card used for the original transaction, cheque payments will be refunded in cash but due to banking restrictions can only be refunded at least 14 days after the original purchase date. Due to the high incidence of fraud we regret that we are unable to offer any refund without a valid receipt/delivery note.

Refunds will be made for faulty or incorrect items, including any delivery charge incurred by the buyer (excluding ‘Special Delivery’) in the return of the item. If the products you ordered are delivered to you in good condition but you wish to return them for any reason we will refund the full value of the goods excluding any carriage charge upon receipt of your returned goods.

Items won’t be considered lost until after 15 working days of items beingdispatched. Once the 15 working days are up we will issue a refund or replacement.

If you have not received your order please call us on 01772 644340 and a member of staff can confirm the shipping date. Unfortunately we cannot consider an item to be lost until 15 working days has passed (according to Royal Mail procedure). Trek Marlin 5 Upgraded, Newb Question

Good day! I Just started biking this year 2020, and ended up buying a Trek Marlin 5 17.5" 29er for me to develop the skills I needed in mountain biking, After a month or so I realized the bike cant handle some abuse as many people have said online and by some researches I've done. Later on I upgraded my drivetrain to shimano deore and changed my fork to a manitou machete 120mm travel. I was just wondering if the bike now can take a beating on some technical trails. I am not that type of an aggressive rider but I want to go in that direction. and also I'm not yet planning to buy a new bike, I just love the Volt Green of Marlin. Can you share some of your thoughts or insight for a newbie like me?  

Thank you! as for the issues, i feel like the 7 speed was limiting me. and the preload of forks was so hard to adjust. everytime i try jumping on the stock fork there's always loud noise when bike takes off the ground like its firing back fast. with the upgrade it feels much better and lighter, I even started doing some wheelies and its fun. Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep my eyes on that breaks and wheels. I was just skeptical to do some technical trails, as people always said that for doing those things I must have a trail ready bikes like having a slacker head angle. i guess i was being paranoid? for me thinking of these things holds my confidence back i don't know. 😂

People will say a lot of things aren't possible. They are wrong. People were biking down rough hills for YEARS before suspension was even invented. You might not be as fast or comfortable, but a big part of that is your ability level. It will increase while you learn what type of bike is right for you, and save for that one.

I would check with Trek about changing the fork length. Manufacturers design frames to be strong enough for a certain component setup. If you go outside of that, you subject the frame to stresses for which it was not intended. You may have voided the warranty on the frame. I am not surprised that the fork felt like garbage. It's a flimsy fork, and anything nicer than that probably creates a night-and-day difference!  

Like Matt said above, bikes can take a pretty good beating from a new rider. Ride it as you wish and within reason (it's designed for xc trail use, not downhill, etc). I think most of us started out with similar bikes and hammered them pretty good. If you decide to keep it, spend your money on key upgrades such as wheels.  

I started on a Marlin 7 about 4 years ago. I upgraded the rims to be tubeless ready, and that was it. I beat the hell out of it for 2 years before upgrading to something much better. I sold it to a friend getting into riding, and it still runs like new. Bikes are tough as long as you know how to maintain and tune them before other things fall out of line. My advice would be to upgrade your rims to be tubeless, and don't spend much more on other components. Ride it for a couple years and upgrade. A $400-500 bike will never be a $1000 bike. Go demo a better bike, and you will understand how much better the geometry of the frame is along with better brakes, drivetrain, etc. And most importantly, welcome to the world of mountain biking!

Bikes are more than just the sum of their parts. In some cases, individual parts can be used on many types of bikes intended for riding in different ways. The frame of that bicycle dictates most, but not all, of the purpose of a bike. The components bolted onto the frame dictate some of it, and mostly through their general quality, adjustability, and durability. This reflects mostly with how quickly they wear out or how easily they break, but the increased adjustability can make a huge difference on something like suspension components that need to be tuned for specific riders and sometimes specific terrain. The basic, inexpensive stuff simply can't be adjusted enough to make much of a difference. Where this leads me is to the fact that you can put better components on any frame to help the bike function better or be more adjustable, but you cannot change what the bike IS by putting different components on it. Being a basic frame, the Marlin isn't built with ride quality in mind, for example. Other, more expensive hardtails can be more "comfortable" but with hardtail frames, that's a difficult thing to quantify, and it takes some experience as a rider before you can even perceive such a difference consciously. The geometry of such basic frames also puts the rider in a more upright position that might feel better for beginners, but for more advanced riders, makes it more difficult to pilot the bike through more advanced situations. The basic frame will also oftentimes lack certain refined details that you find on more expensive frames. New components won't change any of those things. You also find at higher prices more diverse options. For hardtail frames, you'll find stuff intended for xc racing, for bikepacking, for riding in the snow or on beaches, for more aggressive riding, and so on. Full suspension frames can vary even more. So, coming back around to it, as a beginner rider, you simply don't know what you don't know. If you really take to mountain biking, you can grow out of an entry level bike pretty quickly. The frame less so, but it's usually the limitations of the components that become obvious first. You CAN upgrade what you have, but there becomes a point where the cost of upgrades doesn't make sense for what you have, and the frame becomes the obvious weak point of the whole thing. As a beginner, it can be difficult to figure out where that point is. Modest upgrades aren't generally an issue, but they'll only take you so far.  

Thanks guys for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I'll keep in mind what you guys have said! I'll just use this bike for a while and learn myself the limits i can throw on it. It maybe a bad frame for what I intended to use it for. If it brakes, i guess ill be more careful on picking new frame.  

Breaking the frame is unlikely, saying someone who has broken Steel ,Ti and AL. If you have the chance to ride other bikes ,you should do so, you will learn what you like or don't. Look for demo days ,borrow or rent. The more you ride , the more you refine what suits you.

Hi, a little bit off-topic but can you please expand on your upgrade to the Shimano Deore?  

I have, and love, my marlin 5 too. I bought it instead of a gravel bike, so its setup pretty mild. Its a stiff ass frame, its not comfortable or complaint like a high end steel bike... but whatever, its $550. I had a wheelset and 11s drivetrain ready to go on it the day I bought it... be aware that for the 5, you must replace the rear hub to change to 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 speed. Realistically that means a whole new rear wheel at a minimum. I wanted the green one, so I got the 5 on purpose. Its all getting changed out anyway, I have spares. If you dont, its really worth getting at least the marlin 6 to get away from the 7 speed hub. Also, its a 44mm headtube. It can run a tapered fork even though its a straight 1 1/8th stock.

What length should you choose?

• You are a beginner or intermediate skier
• Your weight is lighter than average for your height
• You like to make short, quick turns
• You are skiing fast and aggressively
• You weigh more than average for your height
• You plan to do the majority of your skiing off the trail
• You are purchasing a ski with significant rocker in the tip

A shorter ski will be easier to turn yet not as stable as a longer ski. A carving ski with a skinnier waist and a smaller turn radius can be skied at a shorter length than an all mountain or a freeride ski with larger, longer turn radius and fatter waist width.
