VISA WAIVER FOR THAIS GOING TO THE UK | One of the goals of the UK-Thai Strategic Partnership agreement signed with UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron on Wednesday is to allow Thai passport holders visa-free access to the United Kingdom on short-term visits for tourism or business.

On Wednesday, Thailand signed a roadmap agreement with the United Kingdom elevating the Western country as a strategic partner. The deal was inked on a flying visit to Bangkok by newly appointed UK Foreign Secretary and former Prime Minister, David Cameron. A key upshot of this agreement is that active talks will now focus on granting visa-free access to Thai passport holders in the United Kingdom. It comes with a mounting number of Thais living in the United Kingdom and Brits in Thailand. At the same time, the agreement is coming with rising geopolitical tension in the Indo-Pacific. Part of this week’s agreement was enhanced security cooperation between the two kingdoms.

In a significant diplomatic move, Thailand and the United Kingdom have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership. This has been described as a roadmap for closer ties between the countries.

In Bangkok, on Wednesday, top Foreign Ministry officials were certainly upbeat.

In short, they heralded it as a significant milestone in 170 years of diplomatic ties.

Visit by Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton to Thailand. New strategic partnership deal brings Thailand closer to a visa-free waiver and a full trade pact

The announcement came during the official visit of Mr David Cameron, Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton. The UK’s Foreign Secretary was in Thailand on March 20, 2024.

The 57-year-old Foreign Minister recently made a surprise return to the UK’s political arena. He was appointed Foreign Secretary out of the blue by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in November 2023. In turn, he was elevated as Lord Cameron in order to be seated in the House of Lords. Markedly, he is no longer a sitting MP.

Cameron was responsible the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom in 2016. It was part of his government’s 2015 election-winning manifesto.

Afterwards, he resigned when the shock decision for Britain to exit the European Union was made clear.

Previously, he was the UK Prime Minister from 2020 until 2016 and won two General Elections. His visit to Thailand, on Wednesday, came while on his way to an annual meeting with top Australian officials in Canberra.

Free trade pact talks began in late 2020. In 2022 the kingdom entered into an Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) with regular meetings on bilateral trade

It is coming with red-hot geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Mr Parnpree Bahiddha-Nu-Kara, warmly welcomed Mr Cameron. The new agreement, he promised, will strengthen the bonds between the two nations.

A key focus of the talks was the enhancement of economic ties, with discussions revolving around preparations for a free trade agreement (FTA).

Thailand began talks on a free trade pact with the United Kingdom in late 2020. It came as the United Kingdom finalised its future European Union relationship.

Thailand urged to get on the ball as the full Brexit gets the green light with Christmas Eve trade pact

Subsequently, in 2022, it entered into an Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP). This entails regular meetings to review and expand bilateral trade.

Thailand seeks full trade access to the United Kingdom. Foreign Ministry must also negotiate the choppy waters of geopolitical tensions in Asia over China

On Wednesday, Mr Parnpree emphasised the potential of the new agreement in raising cooperation between the two kingdoms. In short, Thailand is anxious to expand market access across the world and attract inward investment.

Moreover, both sides are embarking on a programme of enhanced security cooperation.

The agreement foresees future development in areas such as science, technology, tourism and education. Thailand needs to upgrade its standard of education at all levels including achieving greater proficiency in English.

Undoubtedly, a key goal for Thailand in future is a visa waiver agreement for Thai ordinary passport holders.

Thailand is pursuing a similar concession with European Union countries or the Schengen zone. It comes after its agreement with China which went into effect on March 1st.

Srettha plans a visa-free hub by asking the European Union for a mutual visa waiver similar to China

Thailand’s current foreign affairs policy is to raise the kingdom’s position as a world player. This includes strengthening the power of the Thai passport abroad.

Visa exemption for Thai passport holders travelling to Britain is bolstered by increasing numbers of Anglo-Thai relationships, expats and foreign tourism

The visa exemption for Thai travellers, additionally, would mark a significant step towards easier travel between both countries. In turn, this will assist in promoting people-to-people exchanges.

Indeed there are already strong community bonds between Thailand and the United Kingdom.

Large numbers of nationals from both countries have formed relationships and familial bonds since the internet era began.

Subsequently, fears about immigration and stronger safeguards have inadvertently penalised genuine UK and Thai citizens. It is hoped that closer ties between the two countries will be advantageous to this growing and positive community.

In foreign policy terms, Thailand is seen as a pivotal and important player in Asia by Western powers.

Of course, the United Kingdom is a staunch US ally as indeed is Thailand on paper. But in the last two decades, Thailand is seen as having moved dangerously close to China.

The discussions between Mr Cameron and Mr Parnpree took place in this context.

Discussions touched on the critical situations in Gaza and Myanmar. Both countries have roles to play and vested interests in furthering the cause of peace

At length, they additionally extended to regional and global issues. Particular attention was given to the increasingly critical situation in Myanmar.

At the same time, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and no doubt, Middle Eastern concerns over Gaza.

Democratic forces on the cusp of victory in Burma over the despised military junta, call for support

Israeli ambassador launches campaign to remind thais about the hostages still being held in gaza.

The latter comes with Thai hostages still being held by the terror group Hamas in the war ravaged enclave.

The United Kingdom, like Thailand, is a close friend of Israel and the United States. At the same time, both kingdoms now have significant Muslim minorities.

Simultaneously, attacks by Houthis on shipping in the Red Sea are a rising worry. In short, this has also created problems for Thailand’s already challenged export industry.

Thailand expressed gratitude to the UK for supporting its application to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Unquestionably, this highlights the close cooperation and mutual support between the two countries. Similarly, both countries benefit from a stable international order and peace, something increasingly under threat.

The UK sees Thailand as an important player in the Indo-Pacific. Both countries are anxious to underline their status as powers in their own right

A pivotal moment in the visit was the signing of the Thailand-UK Strategic Partnership Roadmap by Mr Parnpree and Mr Cameron.

This roadmap formalises the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. At length, it makes the UK the first country in the European region to be recognised as such by Thailand.

Additionally, an Air Services Agreement was signed. In short, this paves the way for enhanced connectivity through direct flights between Thailand and the UK.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Cameron accentuated the importance of the strategic partnership. He highlighted Thailand’s role as a significant player in the Indo-Pacific region.

Both countries are anxious to stress their world role in their own right.

Thailand wants to be seen as independent of the United States and China.

At the same time, the United Kingdom is forging a singular course apart from the European Union and America.

Cameron underlined the economic benefits to the UK of closer trade and business with Thailand. He highlighted this on a visit to a Thai Air Force base

Mr Cameron emphasised the potential for economic growth and job creation in the UK through collaboration with countries like Thailand.

Especially in the face of global challenges such as climate change and the dawn of a new technological era.

The new partnership, in particular, will promote health and energy research.

In addition, it supports green growth initiatives in Thailand. The launch of a fund worth up to £6 million to boost green growth was noted.

This demonstrates the UK’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in Thailand.

‘South East Asia is a commercial powerhouse and Thailand is one of the biggest economies of the lot. Working with countries in this region means jobs and growth back here in the UK,’ Lord Cameron announced before departing the United Kingdom. ‘Thailand is a founding member of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and an influential player across the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work with them to address shared global challenges that affect us all – including the impacts of climate change, rapid technological development, and threats to global health.’

Furthermore, Mr Cameron’s visit included engagements aimed at strengthening defence cooperation. One aspect of his visit was a trip to a Royal Thai Air Force base.

There, he inspected jet fighters using British-made components.

Consequently, he told reporters that this category of exports to Thailand generated £300 million for the British economy annually.

New strategic partnership and roadmap initiative will lead to Thai passport holders eventually having visa-free access to Britain for short-term visits

Significantly, this aspect of the bilateral relations is becoming increasingly more important. Certainly, it is linked to a growing belligerence in the region from Beijing. In short, a heightened threat of war, something which is now a very real possibility.

An issue of key concern for Thai officials is a reciprocal visa arrangement.

Indeed, this is highlighted in the extended roadmap of Anglo-Thai relations. This would, in effect, eventually offer visa-free facilities for Thai passport holders travelling to Britain. This waiver would only apply to short-term visits for such purposes as tourism or business trips.

Subsequently, it is hoped that Thai tourists and related family members living in Thailand will be able to fly to the United Kingdom without prior visa approval.

The moves would be of considerable convenience to the growing number of Anglo-Thai families. In view of the fact that these now number in the hundreds of thousands.

Approximately eighty six thousand UK nationals currently live in Thailand. This is according to the 2023 Thai census figures. 70% of these are male, many with Thai relationship partners.

Currently, the United Kingdom is one of approximately 40 countries that already enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand.

The Thailand Tourist Visa Guide (Single & Multiple Entry)

The majority of foreign nationals are able to enter Thailand on a visa exemption stamp.

This means that when you enter Thailand you are given a stamp at the immigration desk that allows you to stay in the country for 30 days.

Okay, so now you're clear on how long you can stay when you arrive without a visa, what if you want to stay for 6 weeks, or 2 even months?

In this case, you can apply for a Tourist Visa before you travel.

In this FAQ guide, I'll answer all common queries regarding the Thailand Tourist Visa, both single and multiple entry.

thailand-tourist-visa

1. Where can I get a Tourist Visa?

A Tourist Visa can be obtained from a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country, or a country outside of Thailand, if you live abroad or are already traveling.

You can also apply via the E-Visa online system. Indeed, some embassies may no longer accept applications for Tourist Visas and instead require you to apply online.

The E-Visa is delivered via email. You can then print it out and present it to immigration on arrival.

What different types of tourist visa are there?

A. single entry.

The Single Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 3 months from its date of issue. It allows a single stay of a maximum of 60 days.

B. Multiple entry

The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months from its date of issue.

It allows an unlimited number of entries within the 6-month validity of the visa. Each entry allows a maximum stay of 60 days.

For example, if you leave Thailand on the 59th day of your stay and re-enter the country a day later, you will be stamped in for a further 60 days.

What documents do I need to get the Tourist Visa?

The requirements may vary slightly between country, but this is usually what's required from your local embassy.

  • A completed visa application form with two recent passport type photos attached. The form can be downloaded from your local Thai embassy website.
  • Your passport must have a minimum 6 months remaining validity, and at least two blank pages – this is so your visa can be added to the passport, and for entry/exit stamps when entering and leaving Thailand.
  • If you reside in a country but are not a citizen of that country, then you will be required to show a visa or residence card that permits you to stay. You will also be required to show evidence of where you live, by way of utility bill, bank account statement, or driving license.
  • Two recent passport size photographs. You can get these done at a photo booth (in a mall or store) or at some print services shops.
  • Confirmation of travel (flight tickets).
  • Proof of accommodation in Thailand: this can be a copy of your hotel booking or a letter from the family or friend you are staying with.
  • Copy of bank statement to show proof of earnings. This requirement will differ between countries, and differs for the single and multiple entry visas. For example, for a Single Entry Tourist Visa from a US Thai embassy, you will need a copy of your bank statement showing $700 per person and $1,500 per family. For a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, you will need a copy of your bank statement for the last 6 months showing a minimum balance of $7,000 (every month).

Thailand's E-Visa System

If you are applying online through the E-Visa system, you will require the following documentation:

  • Passport or travel document with a validity of not less than 6 months.
  • Photograph taken within the past six months.
  • Evidence of travel to Thailand (air ticket paid in full).
  • Evidence of adequate finance (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family).

Please note that you are not required to submit any supporting documents in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate after completing the E-Visa application. Once approved, a confirmation e-mail will be sent through and you can  print a copy of the confirmation e-mail to present to airline and Thai Immigration officials.

You can apply online here: https://www.thaievisa.go.th

Historically, Thailand's online systems have always fallen way short of expectations, with browser compatibility issues, bugs, broken links, etc., but the new visa system is working pretty well.

For those who deem themselves digitally challenged, there is a comprehensive user manual. This manual is also available as a series of how-to videos, which are very helpful. You can find the manual here.

How much does a Thai Tourist Visa cost?

The cost varies between country, but here is the cost for the US and UK:

  • US: Single – $40. Multiple Entry – $200
  • UK: Single – £30. Multiple Entry – £150

How long does it take to process a Tourist Visa?

If you attend the Thai embassy in person, the process will take around 5 working days. If you apply by mail, the process will take a minimum of 15 days.

Applying online will take 6-10 working days.

This is a general guideline and will differ between countries, and may be longer or shorter depending on how busy the embassy/consulate is.

I would personally allow 2 weeks if applying in person or online, and 3 weeks if applying by mail. This will ensure you get your visa before your flight date.

When is my Tourist Visa valid from?

The Single Entry Tourist Visa is valid 3 months from date of issue, and the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months from date of issue.

When you enter Thailand, you will be stamped in for 60 days.

Note: The expiry date of the visa shows on the visa sticker as ‘ENTER BEFORE'. When you enter Thailand, you will receive a rectangular stamp in your passport stating your date of entry and the ‘ADMITTED UNTIL' date. This date will be exactly 60 days after your date of entry

What happens if I leave Thailand before my 60-day stay is up?

If you leave prior to your 60-day stay ending, the remaining days will be forfeited.

If you think you will want to leave Thailand and re-enter, you should get a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa.

The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is valid for 6 months from date of issue. You are allowed unlimited entries within the 6-month period of the visa. If you exit Thailand, as long as you re-enter before the visa expires, you will be stamped in for a further 60 days.

Can I extend my visa inside Thailand?

For those who want to extend their stay in Thailand, you can extend the 60-day Single Entry Tourist Visa by 30 days at a local Immigration Office. The fee for the extension is 1,900 Baht.

Under the Multiple Entry Visa, you can extend one of the 60-day stays by a further 30 days. The cost is the same.

Under the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, by saving the 30-day extension for your final entry, you can accumulate almost 9 month's stay in Thailand.

Can I cancel my visa and get a refund?

No. The visa fee is non-refundable.

Can't I just do border runs instead of getting a Tourist Visa?

Because you are granted 30 days stay on arrival in Thailand, in theory you could just leave over a land border after 30 days and return the same day, activating a further 30 day's stay.

This is known as a border run . People used to stay in Thailand for years just going back and forth over the border.

However, the current rule is that if you enter Thailand over land without a visa, you are allowed a maximum of two 30-day entries within any rolling 12-month period.

With a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, you can go in an out as many times as you want within the validity of the visa.

What is the faster option through Suvarnabhumi Immigration in terms of paperwork and/or queues - VOA (30 day exemption) or a pre purchased Tourist Visa?

I’m tossing up my next two entries (this will be my third) so I need to consider when I use my second exemption. My main concern being time constraints with an International transfer & rechecking luggage.

It is not VOA, if you are eligible for visa exemption. Queues for visa and visa exemption are the same. Paper work, probably not much in it.

By air you can use more than 2 exemptions per year. 2 exemptions limit only applies to land/sea borders not air.

Which passport are you travelling on?

As I will have two more entries this year (already had one this year) I need to decide which way to use this entry and whether having a Visa over using the exemption (in this particular instance) is quicker.

I am on an Australian passport. No will need to exit as I need to re check luggage. International to International.

My understanding is the Visa exemption is two entries per year. I haven’t seen anything indicating otherwise? Thank you by the way.

No it is not, unless you go overland or sea. Air is not restricted to 2.

So that is 4 within 4 months.

As Ray has tried to tell you, the restriction of two visa exempt entries per year is for LAND entries only. Exempt entries by air are technically unlimited (although if you have a lot of back to back exemptions, you may be questioned).

As an Australian passport holder you do not need any visa for stays under 30 days — that’s a visa exemption. which is not a Visa on Arrival (aka VOA). It is not any kind of visa.

The 15-day exemption can only be used twice per calendar year when entering via a land border . This limit does not apply to air passengers.

British citizens already in Thailand can apply to extend the visa-exemption period once for 15 days. The request must be made before the end of the visa-exempt period.

  • Proof of accommodation such as an invitation letter from family or friends

There are several types of Thai visas available, including for the following purposes of travel :

  • Official duties
  • Business or work

  • Journalism, film-producers, and reporters
  • Scientific research
  • Skilled/specialist work

Basic document requirements for all non-immigrant visas

All travelers applying for a non-immigrant visa for Thailand must have a UK passport valid for 6 months and with at least 2 blank pages.

Additional supporting documentation is required depending on the type of visa. This may include evidence of financial means, employment details, academic certifications, etc.

Where to Submit the Thailand Visa Application in the UK

UK passport holders can apply for a visa through the nearest Thai embassy .

The first part of the application process has been digitalized however applicants still need to attend an appointment at the embassy to present their documents.

On approval, the applicant must collect the visa from the embassy.

The Thailand Embassy in London is located at the following address:

Royal Thai Embassy 29-30 Queen’s Gate London SW7 5JB

It takes several days to process a Thailand visa application from the UK. Visa appointment waiting times at the embassy vary.

What Happens if a UK Citizen Overstays their visa?

Travelers who stay in Thailand longer than the time permitted by their visa will be fined 500 baht per day up to a maximum of 20,000 baht.

People who overstay a Thai visa also risk being detained or deported and prevented from re-entering Thailand in the future.

It is important for visitors to depart the country by the end of their visa validity period.

Can British travelers extend a Thailand visa?

Tourists in Thailand with a 60-day visitor visa can apply to extend their stay by up to 15 days . Thai visa extensions should be submitted at a Thailand Immigration office before their original visa expires.

To apply for a visa extension, travelers need:

  • Completed TM.7 application form
  • Copy of passport information page
  • Copy of the visa
  • Passport-style photograph

Visitors pay a visa extension fee. Applicants usually spend around 1 or 2 hours at the immigration office to complete the process.

From July 1st, the following changes have been implemented for all international travelers.

  • Foreigners do not need to show proof of Covid Insurance.
  • All mandatory hotel quarantine has been removed.
  • Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers entering Thailand.
  • Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving.
  • Unvaccinated travelers (including children traveling with unvaccinated parents) will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) 72 hours before departing for Thailand. Proof does not need to be uploaded before traveling.
  • Airlines and Thai Immigration will do random checks to confirm travelers meet Covid prevention requirements (vaccination or Covid test).

Below is a full list of what international travelers need before entering Thailand.

Passport Validity / Visas

The first thing to check before planning to travel to Thailand is the validity of your passport. International travel requires that your passport is not expiring within six months of your travel date. If you have less than six months left on your passport, you cannot enter Thailand.

If you are planning to travel in the future, check your passport early so you know if you need to apply for a new one or not. It is best to check with your local embassy about how long it will take to receive your new passport. As people look to travel again, passport departments are swamped with new applications and this is causing a backlog in many countries.

There are several visas available to foreigners who are planning to visit Thailand. The visa you need will depend on where you are from, your purpose of travel, and how long you intend to stay.

Visa Exemption

A foreign visitor may enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption Program . Nationalities under the Visa Exemption Program may enter Thailand without a visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

Upon arriving in Thailand, most nationalities who are part of the Visa Exemption Program may stay for up to 30 days. Certain nationalities can arrive as part of this program, but for a shorter time. It is best to check the country exemption list and confirm how long you can visit Thailand without needing to apply for a Visa.

Tourists arriving under visa exemption are eligible to extend their stay for up to a further 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration Office. The cost to extend is approximately 2000 baht.

There is often confusion about Visa Exemption and “Visa on Arrival”. Visa on Arrival is a 15-day visa for travelers from India,  China, and 16 other countries. If you do not find your country on the Visa Exemption list, it is best to check the Visa on Arrival list.

There are some important things to note for Visa on Arrival:

  • A passport must be valid for at least 30 days.
  • The purpose of the visit is strictly tourist.
  • A visitor must show an address in Thailand where they will be staying.
  • A traveler must have a confirmed return flight.
  • Must show proof of funds to the value of 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht for a family.
  • A fee of 2000 baht is paid on arrival. The fee must be paid in cash and in Thai baht.

Tourist Visa and Special Tourist Visa (STV)

Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, or the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which can be extended for 90 days twice at a local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to potentially stay in Thailand for 9 months. The Special Tourist Visa is currently scheduled to halt applications in September.

Contact your local Thai Embassy to verify what documents are needed to complete the process. When your visa is approved, the Embassy will place a sticker on your passport, so allow time for potential postage.

For those entering Thailand for a different purpose of stay, they need to obtain a Thai visa from their local Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to coming to Thailand.

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may apply for a wide range of long-term non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for a long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized at a local Thai Embassy or Consulate. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

Siam Legal International is a reputable company in Thailand that has offered visa assistance to foreign visitors for years. They are well versed in Thai immigration policies and processes. If you would like to streamline your long-term stay in Thailand, it is worth contacting them.

Thai Elite Visa

If you wish to make Thailand easily accessible for many years to come or are perhaps thinking of relocating permanently, it is worth having a look at the Thai Elite Visa.

The Thai Elite Visa allows foreign citizens to live in Thailand for 5, 10, or even 20 years. Thai Elite members do not need to worry about some of the eligibility criteria that are needed when applying for other long-term visas.

The Thai Elite visa is an exclusive visa that offers a host of benefits to holders. If you want to enjoy “Thai life” for the long term, you can read more about the Thai Elite Visa .

Proof of Vaccine or Testing

How a visitor enters Thailand will still depend on their vaccination status.

Vaccinated Travelers

Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving. A vaccinated traveler will need to have a copy of their vaccination certificate either printed or on a digital device and be able to present it if asked.

Thailand does not require visitors to have had a third booster shot. 2 shots (1 shot for Jansen) is considered fully vaccinated and accepted.

Unvaccinated Travelers

Unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR test or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) within 72 hours before boarding a flight in their departure country. They will need to have a copy of the test result and be able to present it if asked.

The RT-PCR and Pro-ATK test must be completed by a medical professional and a test report received. The home ATK (RAT) self-test is not acceptable for entering Thailand.

Vaccination and Testing for Children

The testing requirement for children under 18 depends on the vaccination status of their parents. Children traveling with vaccinated parents do not need to complete any RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before entering Thailand. Children traveling with unvaccinated parents will need to complete the same test as their parents within 72 hours of departing their home country.

It is important to note that many airlines are still asking for proof of vaccination or a Covid test before boarding flights. If you cannot produce one of these documents, you might not board the flight.

Though foreigners no longer need to provide evidence of testing or vaccination prior to arriving in Thailand, they are still required. Thai authorities are conducting random checks of international passengers and if a vaccination certificate or test result cannot be shown, a visitor will not be allowed to enter Thailand.

Insurance has become a dirty word during Covid. Seasoned travelers have always understood the importance of having comprehensive Travel Insurance when traveling abroad. Travel insurance protected travelers from unexpected incidents like:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Lost luggage

It was one of those things that people hoped they would never need but regretted not having when needed.

During the Pandemic, proof of insurance became mandatory when visiting countries like Thailand. Over time, people stopped referring to insurance as “Travel Insurance” and always referred to it as “Covid Insurance”. Because you had to have it, it was another hoop to jump through.

The good news is that you no longer need to provide proof of “Covid Insurance” to enter Thailand. But it is recommended because all the things listed above can still happen, and Covid has not disappeared completely.

Foreign visitors are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand if something should happen. Whether it be an accident or personal injury, if a visitor needs medical help, or has a canceled flight, they will need to cover any expenses themselves. Depending on the severity, this could be hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Buying good Travel Insurance shouldn’t break the bank. Protecting yourself is cheaper than medical bills, new flights, and replacing lost luggage.

You can buy Travel Insurance from many companies. But if you are looking for coverage that is designed for Thailand, is trusted by Thai authorities and medical institutions, and offers a helpline with people who speak the local language and know the country’s procedures, it is worth checking out AXA Thailand .

Their policies are well priced, straightforward, offer many benefits to its customers, and can be approved in minutes.

Hotel and Proof of Address Updates

Previously, a foreign visitor would complete an Arrival Card (TM6) before entering Thailand. This requirement has been temporarily removed as part of a new initiative by the Thai government.

A visitor no longer needs to provide proof of a hotel booking before departing their country, but will still need to provide an address when passing through Passport Control in Thailand. This address can be a hotel, home, or friend’s address.

This is especially true with people arriving on a pre-approved visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

From July 1, travelers are no longer required to book a SHA+ hotel and undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival. Most hotels have removed their SHA+ quarantine packages, but you will still see the SHA+ badge displayed on hotels.

It is recommended to browse hotels in Thailand on Agoda.com before arriving as it is easier to organize transport to your first night’s rest if pre-booked.

buy now

Thailand Pass

From July 1st, 2022, foreign travelers no longer need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering Thailand. The system is still in place but is now a platform where visitors can notify the Thai authorities and medical facilities if they are diagnosed positive for Covid during their stay.

If you need to access the Thailand Pass system while in Thailand, please visit https://tp.consular.go.th/ and register by filling in your personal details on the Thailand Pass registration page.

International Arrivals

Travelers do not need to provide any proof of flights before leaving their home country.

There is a lot of discussion about whether a return flight needs to be booked when entering Thailand. Technically, all visitors should have a return flight booked. However, you will not always be asked to present evidence of a return flight.

If a visitor is entering Thailand with a pre-approved visa, or Visa on Arrival, they will often be asked to present details of their exit flight. Sometimes a visitor did not have a return flight and had to book a flight on the spot before being processed through Passport Control. To avoid this, it is best to book an exit flight that can be changed. You can always change your plans once in Thailand.

Domestic flights

There are no longer any restrictions on domestic flights and travel. When entering Thailand at an international terminal, a traveler is free to transit to a domestic flight right away. “Sealed” flights have been removed.

Domestic airlines will not always ask for proof, but it is best to have your vaccination certificate or Covid test result on hand in case you are asked to show it.

Siam Legal has received reports from potential clients that some hospitals are creating difficulties for them until full payment is made for their medical expenses. Also, foreigners have allegedly been threatened with lawsuits for not settling their medical bills before being discharged. Using out-of-country policies can be problematic. We recommend using insurance providers headquartered inside Thailand with a proper cover to avoid any undesirable outcomes.

Siam Legal International, a premier law firm in Thailand, recommends purchasing the proper insurance and so endorses AXA Insurance for your travel to Thailand insurance needs.

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT POINTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • Please review the details of any insurance before purchasing to understand if the policy has adequate cover. Cheap policies with inadequate levels of cover can lead to significant personal liability, and scenarios where policy holders incur hundreds of thousands of baht in out-of-pocket medical expenses have been reported. There are significant financial risks to being underinsured during your stay in Thailand.
  • These policies do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning). Best to pay a few baht more for the peace of mind that comes from having proper coverage.
  • AXA covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) for accidents and illnesses, including COVID-19. Other insurance coverage might not.
  • AXA also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation, which may be required during the quarantine period of any traveler.

Thai hospital staff are familiar with AXA cover, which should prevent any inconvenience during hospital admission or medical treatment from your hotel room. AXA Thailand also offers 24/7 local support during your stay in Thailand.

List of approved covid-19 vaccines.

As of December 1, the MoPH has approved the following vaccines:

  • Pfizer–BioNTech or Comirnaty
  • Janssen or Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S
  • AstraZeneca or Covishield
  • Sinopharm or COVILO
  • CoronaVac or SinoVac
  • Sputnik Lite

How to Obtain Travel Insurance

Though COVID-19 insurance is no longer mandatory for entry to Thailand, it is recommended to have comprehensive Travel insurance for the duration of your stay. Good travel insurance covers not only medical expenses relating to Covid but also accident cover, personal damage, loss of possessions, and missed or delayed flights.

It is best to purchase insurance before you travel. The easiest way to buy your policy is online through a reputable insurance provider. The insurance company will provide you with the all-important certificate of cover that you can present to authorities or medical professionals if you need to make a claim.

You may also be asked to present this certificate to the airline before they will allow you to onboard. It’s quick and easy to do online. You can choose your length of policy from 7, 15, 30, 60 days, and 180 days. Just make sure that the policy covers your entire period of stay in Thailand as foreigners are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand and insurance companies will not cover claims for existing conditions.

You may purchase AXA COVID-19 travel insurance within a few minutes. Check them below.
