Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver – Safari Zone Strategy Guide

In the original Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal , when your Trainer traveled to Kanto you found that the Safari Zone had moved out of Fuchsia City. This meant no Safari Zone Pokemon for your character. In Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver , the Safari Zone is back… just in a brand new location. It’s the biggest and most complex Safari Zone to date, so let’s take a look at what all you’ll have to go through to catch ’em all.

First of all, the basic premise has stayed the same – you are given thirty Safari Balls and you have a limited number of steps to catch Pokemon with. Your play ends when you run out of either steps or Safari Balls. This new Safari Zone is a lot more Trainer friendly however. Remember in the old games where you’d have to waste half your steps just to get to an area where you could hopefully find a Chansey? Well, now the Safari Zone is customizable. By using your DS stylus and the touch pad, you can move around the order of the six Safari Zones. This means if all you need to complete the Pokedex is say, a Smeargle, you can set it up so that the Field area of the Safari Zone is right at the entrance, giving you a better chance of catching it. Each of the six zones features distinctly different Pokemon, so you’ll have to visit them all eventually.

The Safari Zone Warden will also have tasks he will assign to you. The first is to get him a Geodude. In return, he’ll activate the customization ability mentioned in the previous paragraph. After that, he will ask you for a Sandshrew. Once you bring him one he’ll activate a new level of customization. This will involve special items that can attract Pokemon that would otherwise not appear in the Safari Zone. Each of these special Pokemon will require a set number of items to be laid down in the Safari Zone in the area they would show up in. Now you can only have 30 items out at a time, and some Pokemon like, say, Carnivine require 25 Grassland item to be laid out in the Desert area. That leaves you only five items to place elsewhere in the zone. The good thing is that the longer you leave these items out, the more experience those items will get, and they will level up like a Pokemon. These items will eventually be worth up to seven times their original value (based on how long you leave them out for), so things will get easier to catch all the Pokemon possible in the Safari Zone. Some rarely occurring Pokemon will not only requires items to be set out, but will also require those items to sit in the area for a length of time before they appear. Remember Carnivine in our item example? Well you’ll also have to leave those items in the Desert for ten straight days before he’ll begin to appear. Because of this, you might want to consider looking for Carnivine in the Marshlands where he requires only 18 points of items, but he will then take 20 days to appear. It’s up to you.

Here now is an easy to read table of each Pokemon and the requirements you’ll need to make them appear within the Safari Zone.

Where can you catch a ghastly/Haunter here?

Sprout Tower at night.

Brendan Avatar

i was thinking…you know that u have 2 wait a certain amout of days for sum pokemon 2 appear…can u jus like change the date on your DS so that it makes the game think that say 20days have gone past??? any one know?

Sean Avatar

@brendan, no i don’t think it will work like that, if you change the date on your ds it takes at least 24 hours in order for anything time related to happen, as far as changing it 20 days and than waiting 24 hours i’m not sure but personally i wouldn’t waste my time trying

COKSUKA Avatar

@Brendan, might work, changing the time from 1pm to 1am makes it night so I don’t see why not. Worth a try, it takes 2 mins to do. it’s a stupid thing to put in a game anyway, the majority of people beat the elite 4 in less than 2 weeks, then they’re done with the game, not going to sit around for 110 days for some shit pokemon to appear.

SHADOW SHAYMIN Avatar

no you cant change the date but if you forward your clock to 23.29 and wait a minute then save then repete for an extra day each time thats how i got riolu

Thom Avatar

Is there anyway you can tell if you have made the rarer pokemon appear??

J-Man Avatar

@Shadow Shaymin – Why 23.29, and not 23.59? I’m gonna try what you recommend.

rye Avatar

need help to find dragon type pokemon realy strong to beat 9 gym

There is no ninth gym. There are two sets of eight.

Someone Avatar

@Shaymin: Are you just BSing? I’ve tried the same approach for bagon and then shelgon and both times was unable to catch one.

I should add that the time to set the clock to (and the time that I used) is 23:59

luke Avatar

the date changes work for me in the safari zone as do they for the bug catching contest(tho i dont recomend jumping ahead because it records the days you do the contest i would only do that for days you missed)

on another note the the best way to get any pokemon is to have the other versions. thats how i did it i legitimantly have seen caught and curently own every pokemon in all ther evolved forms thats the best thing i can recomind because yes the waiting is bs when i can just do in 5 min on another vesion and trade over what its making me do in like 100+ days

Spyder0 Avatar

Now if it says have 18 rocky items, do you have to have exactly 18 items or can you just wait till it counts as 18 rocky items?

Judas Avatar

@Luke, not everyone has 2 DS’s to trade the stuff over. I have 100% pokedex in diamond, but there’s not much I can do about it with one ds.

hanksy Avatar

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Route 41 is an expansive part of the ocean situated between Route 40 and Cianwood City . The mysterious Whirl Islands are said to be where the silver-colored Pokémon fled to when Ecruteak 's Brass Tower burned. However, it is impossible to reach the islands to investigate without a method to calm the violent whirlpools.

Cianwood City

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Cianwood City is a small, isolated settlement on the coast of a large island. Despite its distance from the mainland, the area still attracts Trainers aiming to challenge the Cianwood Gym or visit the centuries-old pharmacy known for its unique medicine. In addition, Cliff Edge Gate leads up onto the jagged cliffs to the west, where the new Safari Zone is located. The rocks that wash up on the northern beach can be cleared away to reveal hidden Pokémon and items.

Cianwood Pharmacy

The Cianwood City Pharmacy has served as the local Poké Mart for the last 500 years. Inform the pharmacist of the situation at the lighthouse to receive the SecretPotion , a powerful remedy that should restore Amphy 's health. After dispensing the SecretPotion, the pharmacist offers traditional medicine for sale.

Cameron's House

The house in the northeast belongs to Cameron , a photographer who will periodically appear in many locations across Johto and Kanto . When encountered, he will take pictures of you and your party against the surrounding area. After certain requirements have been met, he will also take your picture with individual Gym Leaders and other notable figures . These pictures are recorded in the Photo Album, which stores up to 36 images on the PC. Outside, he has an automatic camera set up for visitors to take their own pictures with their party.

Kirk's House

Cianwood may be isolated, but it is not without its share of crime. The house to the south of the Gym belongs to a PokéManiac named Kirk. He was bullied by a kid with red hair into giving up his prized Sneasel . Worried that the thief may return, he asks you to take his Shuckle , Shuckie, for safekeeping. Despite having the highest Defense and Special Defense of any Pokémon, Shuckle's low HP prevents it from withstanding much damage. After enough time has passed, he will ask for Shuckie to be returned. If you agree, he will let you keep it if its friendship is high; otherwise, he takes it back. Before accepting it back, he asks that you take the Berry Juice it is holding.

Cliff Edge Gate

North of the city is a cave hewn into the cliffs. This is Cliff Edge Gate , a cavern that leads to Routes 47 and 48 . The new Safari Zone lies farther west, beyond Route 48. Construction is not yet finished, so no one is permitted to pass through right now.

The North Ledge

On the north side of the beach is a small ledge at the foot of the cliffs. When you approach, Suicune takes off. It races around the beach before stopping to examine your character again, then runs off across the water. Eusine shows up shortly after, and challenges you to a battle in order to earn Suicune's respect. Use Ghost - or Dark-type moves against his Drowzee and Haunter , and Ground attacks to deal with his Electrode .

Eusine says that he is starting to understand why Suicune is keeping its eye on you, then leaves to continue his pursuit of the beast.

Cianwood Gym

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Cianwood City Pokémon Gym Leader: Chuck His Roaring Fists Do The Talking

The Cianwood Gym trains Fighting-type Pokémon, so Flying - and Psychic-type attacks will have the greatest impact. Normal -, Ice -, Rock -, Dark -, and Steel-type Pokémon all take serious damage from Fighting attacks. The Gym Leader, Chuck , can be found not far from the entrance, meditating under the relentless waterfall. But with all the noise, he cannot hear your request for a battle. Climb the left side of the Gym to fight the second Black Belt, Nob. When he sees you, he moves to the left of the highest stairway. Climb the right side and cross the bridge to push the red button. This retracts the winch, stopping the water flow.

Both of Chuck 's Pokémon know Focus Punch , a powerful move that forces the user to first spend a turn tightening its focus. If attacked during that turn, the user loses its focus and the attack fails. Primeape can retaliate against Flying Pokémon with Rock Slide , and Poliwrath can lull its opponent to sleep with Hypnosis . Both have moves that put Quilava at a disadvantage, while Croconaw loses the use of its Water moves against Poliwrath, thanks to its Water Absorb Ability. This is one of the few Gyms where Bayleef has an advantage.

Defeated, Chuck awards you the Storm Badge , which enables the use of Fly in the field. He also hands over TM01 ( Focus Punch ) as a prize.

Fly Like A Bird

Speak to the woman in front of the Gym. She happens to be Chuck 's wife, and is so impressed with you for defeating him, that she hands over HM02 ( Fly ). Fly allows instant travel to any familiar town, a much easier way to revisit earlier locations than by traveling on foot.

Olivine City

Olivine lighthouse.

Return to the lighthouse and take the elevator directly to the Light Room. Deliver the SecretPotion to Jasmine , who then administers the medicine to Amphy . It shows off its full strength with a flash as it powers the lighthouse, and seeing it restored, Jasmine promises to return to her Gym.

As you exit the lighthouse, you receive an important call from Baoba : the Safari Zone is now open! It is now possible to travel through Cliff Edge Gate at any time to reach the park.

Olivine Gym

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Olivine City Pokémon Gym Leader: Jasmine The Steel-Clad Defense Girl

Jasmine , the quiet Gym Leader of Olivine City , has only recruited two Trainers for her Gym. As they have both been fought already in the lighthouse, they merely express their gratitude to you for retrieving Amphy 's medicine. Jasmine specializes in Steel-type Pokémon, which typically have high Defense and are immune to Poison-type attacks. All three of her Pokémon are vulnerable to Fire -, Fighting -, and Ground-type moves, while her Steelix also takes serious damage from Water moves. Her two Magnemite can paralyze and confuse their opponent; her Steelix can whip up a Sandstorm that damages all but Rock , Ground , and Steel Pokémon every turn. Steelix's Screech move lowers the target's Defense, allowing it to deal even more damage with Rock Throw and Iron Tail .

Defeated, Jasmine awards you the Mineral Badge , which ensures obedience of all Pokémon up to level 70. She also hands over TM23 ( Iron Tail ) as a prize.

Cliff Edge Gate (optional)

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Cliff Edge Gate is a cavern that connects Cianwood City to Route 47 , and the new Safari Zone beyond that.

Route 47 (optional)

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Route 47 is a rugged path that links Cliff Edge Gate and Route 48 . Though the route's other end is accessible now, the difficult terrain prevents those without Waterfall and Rock Climb from fully exploring the area.

Cliff Cave (optional)

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Cliff Cave is a small, three-floor cave on the east side of Route 47 . From the entrance, you can climb to the route's upper level to reach Route 48 and the Safari Zone . The way down is currently a dead end.

Route 48 (optional)

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

Route 48 is a short riverside path that connects the rugged Route 47 to the Safari Zone Gate .

Safari Zone Gate (optional)

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon

The Safari Zone Gate is a bazaar situated between Route 48 and the new Safari Zone . The stands here are the first stores that sell Dusk Balls and Quick Balls .

Safari-Zone (Johto)

pokemon soulsilver safari zone pokemon
