This was the trolley tour with Castle visit. We got picked up right at our hotel (Embassy-Napa) and Dennis greeted us and got us settled in the trolley. From train rides through the countryside to private tours with your own chauffeur, these are the best Napa Valley wine tours based on recent traveler reviews. Note that participants must be 21 or older to participate in any of the recommended outings.

Napa Valley Wine Train – The Legacy Experience

Price: From $625 per person Duration: 6 hours

One of the most popular ways to explore California wine country, the Napa Valley Wine Train offers a variety of experiences. Travelers wanting to visit some of the wineries should book The Legacy Experience, which stops at three vineyards, including two of the best wineries in Napa Valley : V. Sattui and Charles Krug. It also includes a photo-op at the historic Welcome to Napa Valley sign, a four-course meal (served throughout the day) and a welcome glass of sparkling wine. All wine tasting fees are included in the tour rate.

The tour lasts six hours in total, three of which are spent on the train. Check-in begins at 9:45 a.m., the train departs at 10:15 and the tour concludes around 4:30 p.m. Despite the steep cost of tickets (which varies by day), travelers say this Napa Valley wine tour is a must. They also note how delicious the food is.

Napa Valley Wine Trolley – Daily Tour

Price: From $125 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Explore California wine country aboard one of the Napa Valley Wine Trolleys, which resemble San Francisco's iconic open-air cable cars. The six-hour Daily Tour stops at three wineries in the lower half of the valley; specific wineries vary from day to day. Drivers double as guides and provide information about the region and its best-known product, and patrons generally find them to be both very informative and amusing.

The tour departs from the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa at 10 a.m. daily, with pickups at select Napa Valley hotels starting earlier. Tickets include transportation, guide gratuity and a picnic lunch, but exclude winery tasting fees, which range from $30 to $40 per person at each winery. If you're looking to visit Castello di Amorosa (the popular winery that resembles a castle) in particular, take the Up Valley Tour .

Platypus Wine Tours – Join-in Wine Tour of the Napa Valley

Price: From $130 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Platypus Wine Tours escorts tour-takers to three area wineries over the course of approximately 6.5 hours. Wineries visited depend on availability and change from one tour to the next, though they tend to be small, family-owned operations. Drivers/guides earn enthusiastic praise for being knowledgeable, professional and personable. Tours typically depart from a central location in Napa (for those driving into Napa), but pickups from nearby hotels are also available. Group sizes range from eight to 12 participants.

Tickets include a picnic lunch at one of the stops as well as bottled water aboard the bus. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included. Platypus also offers tours of Sonoma Valley as well as private tours.

Napa Valley Bike Tours – Full-Day Napa Valley E-bike Tour

Price: From $199 per person Duration: 5.5 hours

Cycle to two different wineries on this electric bike ride. Along the route, guides share information regarding the region and wine-making, and they are widely regarded as knowledgeable and helpful. The bike tours, which are restricted to six participants, begin in Yountville at 10:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m.; this includes bike fitting and riding instruction.

Tickets include use of an e-bike and helmet as well as lunch from Bouchon Bakery, a local favorite. You'll visit three wineries, ranging from well-known vineyards to small, family-owned establishments, on this Napa wine tour. Drivers, who are generally found to be both friendly and accommodating, provide insider information about the region during trips between the wineries. Along with the chauffeurs, travelers also enjoy the wineries selected for the tour. Buses pick up tourgoers from Napa area hotels between 10 and 11 a.m. and tours typically end at about 4 p.m.

The picnic lunch at one of the stops and tasting fees are not included.

Napa Native – Private Wine Tour

Price: From $570 Duration: 6 to 8 hours

A lifelong Napa Valley resident curates and leads this small-group tour. You'll visit three to four boutique wineries, providing your preferences to the company during the booking process. Offered by Laces & Limos, this one-of-a-kind tour will take you to Napa Valley wineries in an open-air tuk-tuk, which departs the Archer Hotel in Napa at 11:30 a.m. daily. Price: From $1,440 per group (up to 14 guests) Duration: 8 hours

Looking for someone to drive you to the Napa Valley wineries of your choice? You can do that, too. Especially fun for groups (think bachelorette parties and girls getaways ), this 14-passenger Mercedes limo sprinter bus is driven by a private chauffeur (who is always the highlight of the tour, according to recent tourgoers). If I could so a ZERO star I would. Totally unacceptable with what happened to my niece at her wedding. With family attending from out of state having to worry about their guest arriving shouldve been the least of their worries when a PLAN was already set in place but didnt happen. Driver did not stick to the outlined instructions that were highlighted on the reservation confirmation. 2nd shuttle service never occurred & guests needed to drive where they were planning to ride a shuttle to the event. This delayed the event by an hour. NVTT charged the wedding party for overtime, that was essentially caused by their own driver. Disappointed in the service we received during this wedding. Hope the my nieces are refunded!!!!

I am not a negative review writer, but this one genuinely makes me angry and warrants a bad review I was part of a wedding party last month as a guest and organizer of sorts. The shuttle showed up on time at the beginning and that's about all I can say in a positive light about this shuttle service. I heard the other organizer very blatantly tell the driver "Call me when you drop the first half of the guests at the venue so I know to start collecting the second half of the guests to be ready for when you return to get us." And the driver nodded and said okay. *Keep this in mind for later.* On the way to the venue the driver got the first group (the group of guests I was with) LOST. The drive was supposed to be 30 minutes and ended up being around 45 because he took a shuttle bus down a one way service road behind a school that ended in a locked gate. He had to reverse the shuttle and use a resident's driveway to perform a three point turn, repeatedly refusing the help from the two Fathers of the Brides that were on the shuttle until he almost ran over the resident's trash cans by their fence. Now let's say "It was the GPS's fault." to give them the benefit of the doubt. And I would say that too... if I hadn't of had to hand MY OWN PHONE to the drive with directions to get to the venue. Because he proceeded to almost take THREE MORE wrong turns in the span of five minutes. So we finally get to the venue and unload the first group of guests. The shuttle leaves. *Remember when I said to keep the directions he was given in mind.* Here's where they come back into play I thought he was going to get the rest of the guests. An hour passes. Nothing. I thought maybe they hit traffic and they were going to be a little late since the drive is 30 minutes one way. Another 15 and the other organizer calls one of the brides and says the shuttle NEVER ARRIVED. He never went back to get the second group of guests. Let me say that again. HE NEVER WENT BACK TO GET THE SECOND GROUP OF GUESTS!!! Luckily there were enough cars that they could all shove themselves into to get to the venue, we're all a little nuts and nothing is stopping this wedding come hell or high water lol. We avoid any further problems until later in the night, after the ceremony and into the reception. The driver is supposed to be at the reception at 9:30 to take grandparents and any one else who's tired back to the hotel. 9:30 rolls around. Shuttle is nowhere to be seen... We had to walk around the parking lot in the dark to find the shuttle. Only to find him SLEEPING. I get it, everyone gets tired but DAMN SET AN ALARM, THIS IS YOUR JOB! So we wake him up and he takes the grandparents home. Comes back late, picks up the rest of the guests at 11. Now the service is trying to charge the brides extra for "going overtime by an hour." I can tell you where that hour went..... THE HOUR HE DELAYED THE CEREMONY BY NOT GETTING THE SECOND HALF OF THE GUESTS! Do yourself a HUGE favor and find another shuttle service. TLDR: Highly highly highly recommend you look elsewhere for a better shuttle service. Didn't follow instructions, didn't pick up guests, delayed wedding an hour, trying to charge overtime for the hour THEY delayed the wedding.

I attended a friend's wedding in October and they had ordered two shuttles. The second shuttle never came and some of the guests ended up having to drive to the event. This was such a messy situation and ended up delaying the event by about an hour. If NVTT apologized to the couple and refunded them, this would be a different story, but they were charged overtime for the wedding when it was NVTT's fault for causing everything to be delayed. Other vendors also charged them more since NVTT essentially made everything late. If you're not looking for reliability and good customer service, feel free to take the risk and book using this company.

Amazing service with highly knowledgeable drivers. Juba was fantastic. Definite reocmmendation for timely airport travel, winery tours and other driving needs.

We had an excellent time exploring the wineries in Napa with Juba of Napa Valley Tours and Transportation. Juba was punctual, friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic all day. We had a great day and left with many recommendations for our next visit to Napa! Thank you, Juba and Napa Valley Tours!!!

Normally I don't post about bad experiences, but I cannot let this slide. It is highly unacceptable to take weeks to find a solution to an issue that can be resolved fairly and quickly. I attended a wedding recently where the shuttle driver did not follow the instructions that were included on the reservation confirmation causing an hour delay to the event. Due to the lack of guideline comprehension, a 2nd PLANNED shuttle service did NOT happen forcing guests to drive to the event when they had originally planned to use the shuttle. To top it off, NVTT charged the wedding party for overtime from a delay that was caused by their own driver. With the extremely slow response for a solution (it has been weeks now), I feel extremely disappointed by this service received during this wedding and how this business has chosen to not resolve it. I hope they are refunded and issues like this don't happen in the future.

I usually don't like to put bad reviews unless I really have a terrible experience. The drivers assigned to my best friends wedding DID NOT stick to instructions that were confirmed prior to the wedding day. I was ready to take the 2nd shuttle that was scheduled to take us to the venue. They DID NOT SHOW!! I traveled from out of state so I did not get a rental car because there was going to be shuttles provided. Because the shuttle assigned did not show I had to scramble and get an Uber which isn't so reliable as well. This caused me and a bunch of other guests to be late to the wedding which delayed the event by an hour. NVTT charged the wedding party for overtime, that was essentially caused by their own driver. Disappointed in the service we received during this wedding. Hope the couple is refunded.

Juba was awesome... his hospitality made me feel at home with family. Jube gave me all the history of the Bay/Napa in such a short period, and I appreciate it. Ultimately, I felt safe and arrived to my destination in style and on time. Thanks, Juba.. was a great first experience at/in Napa

In New York’s Hudson Valley, a New Napa Is Growing—But for Beer

(Bloomberg Businessweek) -- The sun is just beginning to set over the Hudson River, its waters about 2 miles west of my tasting room perch, when I momentarily forget where I am. The waning light streams through the two-story glass walls and refracts off blond laminated timber beams above. Outside, I see farmland and families, children scampering about the vast landscape. The server walks me through tasting notes for the precious liquids—light yellow to dark burgundy—in the stemless wine glasses arrayed on the polished marble bar. It’s not until I take a sip and taste not a riesling but a crisp Czech Pilsner that I’m reminded I’m not at a winery.

I silently toast the owners of Lasting Joy Brewery and say, “Job well done.” The brewer, which opened the current facility in 2022 in Tivoli, New York, is part of an area vanguard creating a Napa Valley in the Hudson Valley, but for beer. Out are the dark, industrial and usually male-dominated spaces typical of brewpub culture, where drinkers swagger through ever-lofty IBUs (international bitterness units—they’re a thing). In are modern, warm, whitewashed rooms, walkable gardens and welcoming tastings. There are even bees.

“Wineries are very hospitality-first. It’s not just the product they’re putting in front of you,” says Lasting Joy co-founder Emily Wenner. “You have to offer the experience.” As the once-booming craft industry starts to stagnate, in part because of saturation, merely having good beer is no longer enough.

To Wenner that means immersing guests in terroir like any good wine country would. From my stool on this late April Saturday, the windows frame hills blossoming with cherry, apple and peach orchards. I also see rows of corn and barley, all future ingredients in a grain-to-glass drinking session.

Others echo this approach on an emerging, if still unofficial, ale trail. The New York State Brewers Association has an app you can use to trace your own brewery crawl from 460-plus breweries across the state. And the state-supported Hudson Valley Tourism agency, which covers the 10-county, 150-mile stretch from New York City to Albany, mentions some 90 breweries in a print brochure, but only two per county online. So area entrepreneurs are doing their best to make it easier to connect the dots.

ReginaRose Lott, owner of the Brew Bus , has shuttled people among the region’s various distilleries, wineries and cideries since 2018 and says multistop beer tour requests now outweigh others, particularly to those outfits that emphasize atmosphere.

“The wineries have been in place for a while, and whether traditional or newer with a hipster vibe, they have these beautiful and romantic locations,” Lott says. “Breweries have managed to do the same thing. They’ve created these gorgeous venues, some for weddings and rehearsal dinners, and others have taken beautiful old buildings and given them life. It’s a big draw.”

The tipping point came in 2013, according to Lott, when the state enacted legislation allowing brewers to serve consumers directly if their beers were largely local by 2019: At least 60% of all hops and other ingredients would need to come from New York. This official “ farm brewery ” designation threw beermakers an economic lifeline, but it also gave these establishments in the agri-rich Hudson Valley an opportunity to showcase the region, both individually and collectively.

Arrowood Farms , in Ulster County across the river from Lasting Joy, takes the designation to its earthy, authentic extreme. It not only grows an acre of Cascade, Chinook and centennial hop vines in rows of 18-foot-tall trellises like some sort of giant’s vineyard, but it also strives for 100% New York‑grown ingredients, much of which are harvested on the 48 acres around its rustic taproom and the surrounding counties.

Those hops join cherries from its orchards, gooseberries and currants from its garden, honey from its beehives and even foraged mushrooms from its wooded land in seasonal, wild-fermented offerings. Arrowood says its on-site spring has a mineral profile reminiscent of water in the Czech Republic’s famous beermaking Plzeň region, and I believe it when tasting its Spring-Fed kölsch.

“We love connecting people with the natural world that enables their beer to exist,” says head brewer Matt Schulze, noting on-premise sales have doubled since 2018. “That’s the best way to weave those things into our story.”

Guests are invited to tour the farm and see and touch the roots of their products, which on my visit entails a tart Porch Beer: Grape , a wild-fermented ale made with Concord grapes and aged in an oak foeder (wooden vat), as well as the light and bubbly farmhouse table beer , aged in white wine barrels and then bottle-conditioned with a neighbor’s maple syrup.

You don’t make ambitious beers such as these without a sense of adventure, which translates into fun for curious drinkers. Brewers might be using sophisticated techniques, yes, but taproom education doesn’t come across as inaccessible. And it’s that shared openness that’s helped create an ad hoc route among Hudson Valley taprooms, much like the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the broader Napa-Sonoma network that sprouted from tourists seeking second stops.

Schulze recommends I visit his friends at Plan Bee Farm Brewery , in a secluded corner of Poughkeepsie back on the other side of the river. There, couples congregate in a spare, barnlike taproom around a list long on yeasts isolated from their homemade honey. The most popular order this day—including mine—seems to be the soft, lemony sour Barn Beer wild ale .

Earlier at Lasting Joy, Wenner nudged me just up the road to Suarez Family Brewery , a literal mom and pop joint that retains all the back-road charm of its building’s Depression‑era heritage, first a tractor dealership then a 1970s lamp factory. Here, extended families sit at long tables and sample local ingenuity, such as the Domain Fruit (Blend 5) , a funky saison made from a combination of two botanical country beers and two maltier brews. The roasty Bones Shirt is one of the best German-style black lagers I’ve quaffed anywhere.

Everyone will direct you to the Drowned Lands brewery , so named for the postglacial flooding that gave the Warwick area its famous rich, dark farm soil. Set up in a defunct reform school for boys, the elegantly reimagined grounds conjure a bustling winery, with a 3,000-square-foot patio and a 1,000-square-foot deck, both overlooking nearby Wawayanda Creek and the distant Appalachian Mountains. Inside, one end of the taproom offers a windowed view of the brewery’s oak foeders, in which my exquisitely light and bready Ploughshare altbier fermented.

The seven-year-old Hudson Valley Brewery may not be set on acres of upstate farmland, but its heart is, having built its national reputation for sour farmhouse ales and fruit-forward amalgam sour India pale ales, or IPAs, that utilize 100% New York-sourced wheat. The beer itself is made in an old mill in the middle of Beacon, a 19th century factory town that attracts weekenders from the city to the Dia Art Foundation museum . It’s one of 16 breweries here in Dutchess County, more than double the number since the farm brewery legislation passed.

Following a renovation last year, the brewery’s modern white taproom is flooded with natural light. Leatherbound tap lists, complete with tasting notes, wait on the bar. Patrons sip from stemware,as they mill about a retail section of bottles to go, some of which are different “vintages” of the labels on tap, and parents pull tables together for their kids to color on. Lines often stretch out the door.

Just as a sour IPA is a means to connect the traditional hophead with the even crazier world of wild ales, Hudson Valley Brewery’s tasting notes are welcoming and easy to understand; a mixed-berry variant of the wildly popular Silhouette sour IPA  gets compared to a Nutri-Grain cereal bar and pink lemonade Fun Dip. Its Straylight sour IPA made with blueberry and lemon tastes like “white gummy sharks.”  The overall vibe, like in many Hudson Valley breweries, is distinctly refined but not rarefied.

“Having fun with the tasting notes works better than things like ‘fresh-cut grass’ that’s harder to pin down,” says Harry Manning, the brewery’s marketing and sales manager. “We do make a higher-end product, and I think we market ourselves that way. But we want to break down the pretension.” After all, it’s still beer.

WHERE TO STAY

After a day of brewery hopping, the Maker is a keen base in the historic heart of Hudson. Eleven rooms (from $499 a night) evoke a robber baron’s bohemian hideaway—all leather, velour, brick and wood, plus a rainfall shower and heated stone bathroom floors. A thermos of hot coffee and a newspaper will be waiting at your door in the morning.

On the other side of the Hudson,  Wildflower Farms is the new standard for luxury in the broader region. The Auberge resort consists of 65 striking, standalone cabins with access to a cosseting spa in its central lodge. Culinary programming is a highlight—think workshops on making focaccia with edible flowers, outdoor dinner parties thrown by globally renown chefs, or classes on botanical mixology.
