Vigan is among the oldest cities in the Philippines.

It is most famous for its Heritage Village and the Calle Crisologo street.

This historic centre dates back to the 16th century and it’s the best-preserved example of Spanish architecture in Asia.

Because of the unique blend of the Philippine’s and Spanish architecture, well-preserved Spanish monuments and rich cultural heritage it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Dancing Fountain at Plaza Salcedo

The Dancing Fountain is located right at the centre of the Plaza Salcedo.

There is a show starting every night at 7.30 pm.

Lasers and lights dance to music from around the world for about 30 minutes.

However, expect crowds since the fountain is an ideal stop-over for the locals as well, and there is a limited place for sitting.

You’ll be greeted by a big old bell and breathtaking views at the top.

The belfry is guarded by a small gate which is locked when there are no visitors.

If you want to make sure you can enter, register at the Tourist Centre along Calle Crisologo at Vigan and ask for a tour in advance.

4. Baluarte Zoo

Just 10-minute drive away from Vigan City is the privately owned Baluarte Zoo.

Among caged animals, there are Bengal tigers, pythons, iguanas, camels, deer, as well as ostriches and flamingos.

Visitors can feed monkeys, swans, peacocks, and parrots.

Within the zoo, there is also a butterfly garden where you can admire thousands of butterflies and a track for horse riding.

The zoo is open every day, and the entrance is free.

I just resigned from a job after some months of exhausting and hectic engagements. That was my first job in the sprawling Manila metropolis and I never thought it could be that stress-filled for someone like me who got used to living a simple life in the mountains.

I badly needed a break and travel was my ultimate respite. Instead of going back home, I chose to explore the eco-cultural wonders of Ilocos Sur, one of the provinces of Region I.

If you’re also planning for an immersion there, here are the must-see tourist spots to see. Take note. Most of these are off-beaten, thus, suited for those who don’t like touristy destinations. Let’s go!

1. aw-asen falls.

Aw-asen falls is one of the newly discovered tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, located on one of its remotest barangays namely, Santo Rosario in Sigay. Expect humps and bumps along the road to the barangay as it has not been fully paved.

The challenge does not end there. From the barangay’s nearest drop-off point, you ‘ll have to hike steep terrains and cross rivers before finally catching sight of majestic Aw-asen falls.

Aw-asen falls measures more than 142 feet (43 meters). It carved a wide and very deep pool. It’s crystal-clear and cold waters provide an instant relief after the arduous hike of getting here.

16. Kayapa Falls

Cascading on one of the most laid-off locations in Ilocos Sur, Kayapa falls features a 7-tier beauty. It’s cool waters emanate from forests upstream which used to abound with different wildlife species such as deer and wild pigs.

The river leading to the falls also thrives with shrimps and small fishes. It is a new tourist spot in Ilocos Sur.

17. Mira Hills Park

Mira Hills Park is Vigan city’s highest point and is the only remaining eco-park within the metropolis. It offers a rustic respite from the hustles and bustles of the city.

Here, you’ll find a swimming pool, an amphitheater for outdoor activities, and the Buridek Museum.

18. Govantes River

Locals claim Govantes River as the “face” of Vigan City because it’s the first river you’ll see before entering Vigan City proper. The local officials have been eyeing to turn it into a boating park.

Hopefully, that will help abate the worsening quality of the river due to household and industrial pollution.

19. Padre Burgos House

It’s the home of Padre Jose Burgos, one of the Filipino priests shot during the Spanish times for allegedly leading a revolt. The house, therefore, signify the heroism of the Ilocanos.

20. Syquia Mansion Museum

The mansion is said to represent the wealth of some locals in the past. These locals were active players during the Galleon Trade. Inside, you’ll find ancient furniture, relics, and paintings.

Surprisingly, one of the relics was a gift of a Chinese emperor during the Ming Dynasty. During the presidency of Elpidio Quirino, the mansion served as the Malacañang of the North.

Because of that, the museum is one of the historical places to go to in Ilocos Sur.

Located a short distance away from Vigan City is the Bantay Church Bell Tower, one of the landmark attractions in Ilocos Sur.

The structure was constructed in 1591 adjacent to the Saint Augustine Parish Church (also known as Bantay Church), one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It originally served as a lookout point and defense fortification against pirate attacks and other external threats during the Spanish colonial period and then again as a lookout point against invading forces during the WWII.

Bantay Tower has a beautiful neo-gothic facade, making it a popular spot for photos.

Unfortunately, in 2022 an earthquake damaged the bell tower. As of 2024, going inside the bell tower is still not allowed due to reconstruction efforts, but you can still see and take pictures of the Bantay Tower from outside.

By now, we know that Ilocos Region is home to a number of beautiful heritage churches, right? Santa Maria Church (also referred to as Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion) is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring a beautiful brick façade and a cylindrical bell tower.

The church is located atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

It gets busy on weekends on holidays, so if you want to go there for quiet and reflection, schedule your visit on a weekday.

A visit to Ilocos Sur won’t be complete without going on an gastronomic adventure. And so, next up on our list is Pinakbet Farm, a riverside restaurant located in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

Pinakbet Farm is a fantastic place to enjoy Filipino favorites, including their IsKarGu set meals (isda, karne, gulay) served with KBL (kamatis, bagoong, and lasona). While savoring the dishes cooked from farm-fresh ingredients, take a moment to appreciate the peaceful river and farm setting. You can also watch a cultural dance performance daily, starting at 12:30 NN to 1PM.

For those who like off-the-beaten-path adventure, one of the Ilocos Sur tourist spots that you should see is Aw-Asen Falls. Standing about 121 meters high, Aw-Asen Falls is considered the highest waterfall in the Ilocos Region. It’s tucked away in the mountains of Sigay, away from the main tourist crowd, making it a great spot for nature tripping.

To get here, you will need to go on a short but tiring trek for almost an hour. The trail mostly consists of mountain path and thick vegetation. Once at the waterfall area, don’t miss the chance to take photos of the majestic waterfall in its glory and take a dip in its cool, deep basin. It is said that the waterfall is fed by a spring uphill, so the water is safe to drink.

The best time to visit Aw-Asen Falls is from November to May.

Next up is one of the best-kept attractions in Ilocos Sur: Pinsal Falls.

Located in the town of Sta. Maria, Pinsal Falls is an 80-foot waterfall with a wide emerald-green basin for swimming. Locals also refer to it as “Twin Falls,” since the flowing cascade separates into two.

To get to the actual waterfall, you can go on a fun balsa ride or walk your way through a series of stairs. If you’re feeling adventurous, trek to the top of the waterfall, which offers a better view and a series of mini-pools where you can take a dip, jacuzzi-style.

There are cottages near the falls that you can rest for rest and picnicking. There are also bathrooms and toilets for refreshing.

The best time to visit Pinsal Falls is during the rainy season, when the flow of the waterfall swells up.

For those craving sun, sand, and sea, Santiago Cove (colloquially known as Sabangan Cove) in the town of Santiago beckons with its 1 kilometer stretch of white sand and clear waters. It is often likened to Boracay in Kalibo, Aklan.

At Santiago Cove, you can relax on the shore, go for a swim, or indulge in watersports like kayaking, paddleboating, jetski, and island hopping. There are also beachfront cabanas where you can rest while enjoying the view of the sea.

Santiago Cove is a great place to enjoy the summer and it’s a family-friendly destination, too!

Another natural attraction in Ilocos Sur that you should see is Sangbay ni Ragsak , Ilokano’s own “Falls of Happiness.” Sangbay ni Ragsak is a beautiful 30-meter waterfall with a wide basin that goes approximately 6-7 feet deep, perfect for swimming. It’s a great spot for a quick dip, especially as it is lesser crowded than other tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Getting here is easy. From the registration point, the waterfall is only a short walk away. There are also cottages and tables along the trail that you can rent if you want to stay awhile.

Paracad View is a riverside dining restaurant built alongside a mangrove forest. “Paracad” is the Ilocano word for mangroves, and it aptly describes the tranquil mangrove forest view that you can enjoy while enjoying Ilokano favorites, including snacks such as empanada, lumpianada, and okay, as well as freshly caught seafood.

This restaurant is perfect for families. During the sunset, the place gives off a soft romantic vibe, so it’s ideal for couples as well.

Aside from dining and picture taking, kayaking activity is offered as well.

Owned by former Filipino politician Chavit Singson, Baluarte Zoo is a sprawling animal zoo located in Vigan City. Visitors can get up close and personal with a variety of animals, including tigers, ostriches, and reptiles, making it a fun-filled destination for families and animal lovers alike.

Note : I personally do not recommend any destination that engages in picture taking with captive tigers. I believe there are alternative animal sanctuaries that promote conservation. I’ve included Baluarte Zoo since it is one of the popular tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Finally, buy some pasalubong before your trip home! Vigan empanada, Vigan longganisa, bagnet, and chichacorn are favorite food souvenirs to take home. For recipients that love home cooking, take home a bottle or two of sukang iloko.

There are also shops in Ilocos Sur selling inabel clothing, bags, wallets, and other products.

How to get to Ilocos Sur

Here’s how to get from Manila to Ilocos Sur:

The most common way to commute is by taking a  bus from Pasay or Cubao to Vigan . Travel is around 8-9 hours.

The closest airport is Laoag International Airport in Laoag City. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines fly from Manila to Laoag on selected days.

From the airport, ride a bus, van, or taxi to your destination in Ilocos Sur.

The majority of tourist spots in Vigan City are best explored when it's dry and sunny. Plan your Ilocos itinerary around the months when there is little to no rain so you can maximize your time. Here is a detailed guide on when to go to Vigan City:

Vigan can be explored at any time of the year, but it's highly recommended to do your Vigan tour visit between November to May, the dry months. It is also when some of the city's distinct festivals are held.

December to February is having lower temperatures but still dry months in Vigan. Plan your trip during this time if you don't like the intense summer heat.

Every January 22, the locals of Vigan celebrate a longganisa-themed festival. Longganisa is a local sausage with a creamy garlic flavor and a breakfast staple in the country.

Eating Vigan longganisa (or buying bags of it for souvenirs) is a must when in this city. During the Longganisa Festival, stalls are installed around the streets selling the delicacy.

Just a few days after Longganisa Festival is the Vigan Town Fiesta. It is a week-long celebration in honor of St. Paul the Apostle that starts on January 25. This festival fills the streets of Vigan with colorful exhibits, carnivals, and locals performing street dances.

Viva Vigan Festival of Arts | May 

This festival during the first week of May celebrates and promotes Vigan City's cultural and historical heritage. The highlight of the festival is during May 3 (Tres de Mayo) where the celebration starts with a mass at the cemetery chapel and follows by dancing in Calle Crisologo and a parade of their local kalesa.

Climate and Weather 

Vigan has two climates, dry and wet, like other destinations in the Philippines. The dry months are from November to May, with the hottest from April to May. The wet months are from June to October, with August receiving the most rain.

What to Wear 

Exploring Vigan will require a lot of walking around the streets of Calle Crisologo. Wear breathable clothes that are perfect for the summer season, especially if you’re traveling there during the peak dry months.

Wear a hat or bring an umbrella, wear sunglasses, and choose comfortable shoes or sandals that are good for walking around. If your trip is during the cooler months of December to February, bring a light jacket, especially at night. 

How to Get to Vigan

By Bus 

Buses are the cheapest way to travel to Vigan. There are many bus lines to choose from, but their prices do not differ that much from one another.

However, expect the more premium rides like that from  Partas Bus in Cubao and  Fariñas Transit in Pasay that come with Wi-Fi, TV, and the toilet to be on a higher tier. Tickets can be booked in advance.

Partas , Dominion Bus Lines , Viron Transit , and St. Joseph/Aniceto Transit have direct trips to Vigan daily, while Philippine Rabbit Bus Line , Fariñas , Maria de Leon , Florida , Baliwag , and RCJ Transit have regular trips that pass by Vigan via the Manila-Laoag route.

If you want to save more time and money, go for an overnight ride. There’s less road congestion, and you won’t need accommodation for the night. 

For those coming from the following locations in North Luzon, here are some suggested ways to get to Vigan:

From Clark International Airport in Pampanga – Take the shuttle service or a taxi to Dau Bus Terminal where you can ride a bus for Vigan. Travel will take 7 to 9 hours.

From Baguio – Take buses to Laoag and get off in Vigan. The travel time is around 5 hours.

From Abra/Tuguegarao – GMW and Florida Liner bus lines have trips that stop in Vigan.

From Manila, Vigan-bound vehicles, both public buses, and private cars should take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) route.

These highways also serve passengers going to other provinces in Northern Luzon. Going to Vigan from Manila will take roughly 8 to 10 hours. You can also hire private van tours that will take you directly to Vigan from destinations in Luzon. 

Air travel to Vigan is a quick solution if you’re short on time but willing to shell out more. There are no direct flights, but you can fly from Manila to Laoag Airport and ride a bus to Vigan. The entire trip will take around 3 hours. If you’re coming from Visayas or Mindanao, fly to Manila first then to Vigan.

Vigan used to have a community airport named Mindoro Airport that served the whole province of Ilocos Sur, with InterIsland Airline and Sea Air having regular flights. However, operations had to be canceled due to low traffic, though the airport still serves chartered flights.

Other attractions will need to be explored by riding different public and private transportation options, depending on your preference and budget. Here are your options when discovering the tourist spots of Vigan City: 

Kalesa 

These horse-drawn carriages are a staple in the Calle Crisologo area and are perfect for short-distance travel for a unique cultural experience.

These are the only public transportation allowed inside the old street of Calle Crisologo. It’s a great option if you don’t want to walk under the heat. They are paid every hour and can be taken to tourist spots within Vigan City. 

For short to long distances within Vigan City that cannot be traveled by foot, you can ride a tricycle (auto-rickshaw). These can accommodate up to 4 passengers. You can also hire these for a day tour around Vigan City if you’re up for a rugged style of transportation with the open air.

Private Cars or Van

Most of them still maintain the old-world charm through red-tiled roofs, decorative doors, high ceilings, and capiz windows. Do stay until nighttime when the lamps along the street are lit, and tables are set up for dining, as it gets more charming and a tad romantic.

If you want an extra flair of colonial style, visit the Ilocos Sur Provincial Tourism Office. Here you can rent a filipiniana or barong (traditional Filipino costumes) to authentically exude that era’s style as you walk through Calle Crisologo.

Nearby Calle Crisologo is Plaza Salcedo, Vigan's main square and gathering point. At night, it's an audio-visual spectacle thanks to a dancing fountain light show.

Be at the Plaza Salcedo before 7:00 P.M. on weekdays to witness this 30-minute show that synchronizes the spouting of the water fountain to colorful lights and infectious music. On weekends, there is a second show at 8:30 P.M.

It is located in the main square of the city. Also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Conversion of St. Paul, it was founded in the 17th century, and is one of the oldest Augustinian churches in the Philippines.

It boasts of a modified Baroque architecture, made by the Ilocanos to withstand earthquakes. The church has also gone through many disasters but has been restored.

Bantay Bell Tower serves the nearby Saint Augustine Parish Church. It was established in 1950, making it one of the oldest in the Ilocos region, and was used during the colonial era as a watchtower against pirates, thus the name bantay or "to guard."

Climb up and enjoy an awe-inspiring view of neighboring towns.

Along Liberation Boulevard are factories and stores of handmade earthenware. The area is more commonly known as Pagburnayan from the root word burnay or clay pot.

Here, you can try cultural activities like pottery and weaving. The pots or jars are made from bantog clays that are dug from the western side of the city.

They are primarily useful in the fermentation of sugar cane into basí (sugarcane wine) and in making bagoong (fish paste).

Choose from any of the potteries in the area and get your hands muddy on pottery making. Or, you can watch the pros and buy souvenirs instead.

In Brgy. Camanggaan, you can marvel at the intricacies of the hand-weavers at Rowilda’s Weaving Factory or Cristy's Loom Weaving.

It is the ancestral home owned by former President Elpidio Quirino’s wife, Doña Alicia Syquia Quirino. The former president was born in this city, and the Syquia Mansion houses his extensive memorabilia.

Museo San Pablo houses photographs of Vigan in the 19th century by a German photographer and old religious statues.

Museo Nueva Segovia

In 1758, Vigan was the seat of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, making it the position of power of Roman Catholicism up North.

Museo Nueva Segovia is the museum of the Arzobispado and where the Archbishop of Nueva Segovia resides. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo and his men used it as headquarters when they were in Vigan in 1898.

Baluarte Zoo houses both native and exotic animals like lions, tigers, monkeys, camels, deer, ostrich, ducks, kangaroos, and a variety of birds.

It also houses a butterfly sanctuary. It's ideal for visiting early in the morning to watch the animals being fed and released in the open field.

What to Eat and Drink in Vigan

As a part of the Ilocos Region, Vigan City's main food offerings are Ilokano cuisine. Ilocanos, the locals of the Ilocos region, are known great cooks in the Philippines. Their dishes are cooked and served in Filipino homes and restaurants all over the country.

Ilokano dishes are usually cooked with bagoong (fermented/salted fish or small shrimps), fresh seafood, and vegetables. Here is some must-try local cuisine when in Vigan that are served in most Filipino restaurants:

Ilocos Empanada

This delicacy is made with a mixture of grated green papaya, mung bean sprouts, shredded carrots, whole egg, and skinless Vigan longganisa. All wrapped in a dough of rice flour that is then deep-fried to get a crusty shell.

Irene's Empanada in Plaza Burgos is one of the go-to places for this sinful but heavenly and cheap delicacy.

Bagnet - Deep-fried crispy pork belly cooked in its fat. Best eaten with Sukang Iloko (local vinegar).

Pinakbet or pakbet - A staple Ilokano dish cooked with fresh vegetables and bagoong (fermented/salted fish or small shrimps). Bits of bagnet (deep-fried pork belly) is sometimes added to this dish.

Sinanglao – Beef or carabao innards boiled in beef soup stock that is served with vinegar and kamias. You can add leeks and onion rings if you want to add more flavor.

Okoy – A pancake-like dish made with tiny local shrimps and usually eaten as an afternoon snack.

Tinubong – A sticky sweet rice cake cooked in coconut milk and sugar with strips of young coconut. It is sold in bamboo tubes.

Chichacorn or chichapop – A variation of Cornick or a corn snack. These are excellent food souvenir (pasalubong) items since it's easy to snack on.

Sukang Iloko – Vinegar made from fermented sugar cane, mixed with chili pepper and Samak leaves.

Royal Bibingka – A chewy rice cake topped with cheese and margarine and resembles a mamon (Filipino sponge cake), but with chewy texture like that of cassava cake.

Recommended Restaurants and Bars 

Check out these top restaurants while exploring the historic cobbled streets of Vigan. Most of these are located in or near Calle Crisologo. The majority offer Filipino or Ilokano cuisine with some international foods.

Café Leona

It is perhaps the most well-known restaurant in Vigan. Because it is named after the Vigan native, poet Leona Florentino, who is often considered as the mother of Philippine women's literature.

Aside from serving traditional Ilocano and Filipino cuisine, Café Leona also offers an eclectic fusion of Italian, Chinese, and Japanese dishes. And nothing highlights this better than their pinakbet pizza.

Lilong and Lilang Restaurant

Lush gardens may surround the hidden Lilong and Lilang, but it offers some of the best meat dishes like empanadas, warek-warek (pork innards with mayo), and bagnet. They do offer healthier choices like pinakbet and poqui-poqui (roasted eggplant).

Cafe Uno/Uno Grille

Uno Grille is the dining area surrounded by a garden, while Cafe Uno is the indoor area with cool interiors and soft lighting. Both are restaurants in Grandpa’s Inn.

Do try their take on Ilocano favorites longganisa, bagnet, poqui-poqui (roasted eggplant), and dinengdeng (a pinakbet-like dish with squash and a bagoong monamon soup base).

For the adventurous palate, try their nga abuos (mountain ants) or tokak (frog). Both restaurants offer pastries and pasta, and it’s been said that their white tea goes well with the chocolate pancake, buko pandan (a dessert made with coconut meat and screwpine leaves), and sans rival (cake made with buttercream and meringue layers).

Currency 

The primary payment mode in Vigan City is cash in Philippine Peso (PHP). Locals speak Ilokano (their native language) and Filipino. The majority of locals, especially in the City Center, can speak and understand basic to intermediate English as well so communication will not be a problem here.

HISTORICAL SITES IN ILOCOS SUR

1. explore plaza salcedo.

The first in the list of Ilocos Sur tourist spots is Plaza Salcedo in Vigan. The Main Plaza is Vigan is the first thing that we saw. It’s really beautiful for waking around. Next to Vigan Plaza you will find a few places to eat street food and restaurants around.

2. SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL

Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paul is also known as Vigan Cathedral. St Paul Cathedral is Roman Catholic and it’s located closed to Crisologo Street and Plaza Burgos.

3. PLAZA SALCEDO​ FOUNTAIN SHOW

Dancing Fountain Show at Plaza Salcedo​ at 7 pm during weekdays and during the weekends there is a second show qt 8 30 pm. It;s so beautiful and is one of the Ilocos Sur tourist spots that you can’t skip.

4. VISIT SYQUIA MANSION

The Syquia Mansion is a Majestic,  19th-century stone mansion  that features grand,  opulent rooms , period furnishings & art.  The Syquia Mansion tour is free,  but a donation may be given to the caretaker.

5. VISIT FATHER JOSE BURGOS’ HOUSE

Padre Burgos House  or also called  National Museum,  is  the ancestral house and birthplace of priest patriot Fr. Jose Burgos. It is one of the  notable historic structures of Vigan , the capital of the province of Ilocos Sur.  It is a two-story structure  located near the Provincial Capitol and close to St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

6. EXPLORE CRISOLOGO STREET

Calle Crisologo dominates the  Mestizo district,  with its cobblestone streets, malecón,  horse-drawn carriages  and rustic mansions, you will surely  feel like you’ve been transferred to a different place, rather, to a different time!

Full of souvenirs and picturesque everywhere, you feel like walking around old towns in Spain. You can’t miss in the list of Ilocos Sur tourist spots. It’s also popular ride a calesa to move around these streets.

7. VISIT CRISOLOGO MUSEUM

This Museum is the house of the late former politician  Floro S. Crisologo.  It is now turned into a museum with memorabilia & furniture.  The Crisologo Museum is found along De Los Reyes Street in Vigan. 

8. VISIT BANTAY BELL TOWER

The  Saint Augustine Parish Church , commonly known as  Bantay Church , is a  Roman Catholic   church  in  Bantay, Ilocos Sur  in the  Philippines . The church was dedicated to  St. Augustine of Hippo . It is also known as the  Shrine of Our Lady of Charity.  Bantay Bell Tower is one of Vigan’s most iconic structure. Built in 1951, you can see the panoramic view of Vigan in this historical tower.

9. SANTA MARIA CHURCH

Santa Maria Church is located in Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción). The church was designated as a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  on December 1993 as part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines.

10. EXPERIENCE PAGBURNAYAN

Pagburnayan Jar Making is also a well know of the things to do in Ilocos Sur wants to experience. It is located in Brgy. Pagburnayan in Vigan. Pagburnayan is a place where they used the  old and authentic methods in pottery.

The root word “burnay” is an  earthenware jar crafted by potter’s hands  with the aid of a potter’s wheel. It uses fine sand (anay) as a tempering material and fired at a high temperature in a  huge brick-and-clay ground kiln  that make it is harder and more durable than other terra cotta.

11. ABEL WEAVING

The Abel is the traditional woven used in Vigan. The Abel cloth is strong and colorful. Abel is made from yarns of cotton or sagut from the North Luzon where they are growing of this plant.

12. TRY LOCAL FOOD

Try local food is one of our favorithe things to do in Ilocos Sur and everywhere that we visit ha! The  Vigan empanada  is much in keeping with the  Vigan  people’s love for vegetables in their cuisine. Empanadas with meat and vegetables you can find them everywhere.  For 35 PHP as street food you can taste a good ones!

Also popular meals to try in Ilocos Sur are longganisa, sinanglao a beef soup and bagnet fried crispy pork.

NATURE ILOCOS SUR TOURIST SPOTS

13. visit baluarte chavit singson.

Baluarte Chavit Singson or Baluarte Zoo is a zoological park in Vigan, Ilocos Sur Philippine s that is owned by  Chavit Singson .   Baluarte  is just ten minute drive from  Vigan  City. It features a number of live animals like ostrich, tigers, lions, ducks, camels, kangaroos, and deers among others that lives peacefully at the zoo.

There is also a  butterfly garden  and a gallery which showcases the owner’s collection from his trip to Safari.  There is no entrance fee. Operating hours is 6AM to 6PM.

14. CRUISE MESTIZO RIVER

Mestizo River is a stream and is located in Province of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos, Philippines. Mestizo River has so much importance in history in Vigan. It was used to transport goods in the old times.

BEACHES IN ILOCOS SUR

15. mindoro beach.

This beach is located in  Barangay Mindoro , located five kilometers east of the town center. The beach, which faces the  West Philippine Sea , has dark but fine sands. It’s also one of the favorite places to go to by the the tourists because like most places on the Philippines in west coast, it offers a  beautiful view of the sunset .

There are cottages where guests can chill and rest. One of the features that grabs the attention of the people visiting is the  concrete breakwaters  that looked like giant jackstones.

16. SULVEC BEACH NARVACAN

Sulvec Beach is located in Narvacan at Ilocos Sur. Sulvec Beach is one of the popular Ilocos Sur tourist spots apart from Vigan. It has rock formations with a grotto by the sea. There are a few cottages in the beach if you would love to spend the day. As you know guys sunset by the beach is always the best time to visit.

17. SABANGAN COVE

Sabangan Cove or Santiago Cove is located in Santiago at Ilocos Sur. It’s called the Boracay of Ilocos because of their white sand and blue water. It’s perfect place to spend the day swimming and snorkeling. You can even stay at  Vitalis White Sands  and  Santiago Cove Hotel and Restaurant .

18. PUG-OS BEACH IN CABUGAO

Pug-Os Beach in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur just 30 minutes driving North Vigan. A great place for relaxing and swimming to spend the day or the weekend if you prefer. It can be the most popular in the list of Ilocos Sur beaches.

19. MOUNT TIRAD

Mount Tirad is located in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. It’s the third highest mountain in Ilocos Sur with 1154 meters. It’s an easy hike that will take you around 30 minutes from Pilar town to get the amazing views.

20. yamashita cave.

Yamashita Cave is located in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. Yamashita Cave named is because of General Yamashita was hidden in the cave during the World War II. To reach Yamashita Cave you will have to hile around 40 minutes from Cervantes.

21. KEN NGILAWEN BURIAL CAVE

Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave in Alilem, Ilocos Sur. Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave have two log coffins with a sculpture and inscriptions. To reach the burial cave from Apaya barangay you will have to hike a few minutes.

FALLS IN ILOCOS SUR

22. pikkang falls.

Pikkang Falls is located in Barangay Malamin in San Juan, Ilocos Sur. You will have to hike 30-40 minutes crossing the river to get to Pikkang Falls. The place is beautiful and you will enjoy swimming.

23. SANGBAY NI RAGSAK FALLS AND DAWARA FALLS

Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls and Dawara Falls are located in Suyo, Ilocos Sur. Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls and Dawara Falls you can visit both at the same time. You will find only locals around and it will be amazing if you like hiking around the nature.

24. AW-ASEN FALLS

Ilocos Sur is not your typical destination for suns and beaches. Visiting will take you back to its 18th-century vibe with its preserved Spanish architecture.

Its capital, Vigan City, holds a UNESCO heritage site recognition. Other than its historical traces, it is also a gastronomic destination thanks to its famous products like the  empanada  and Ilocos  longganisa.

While it is generally hot throughout the year, the best time to travel is March to May. During those months, the temperature ranges from the highs of 33 degrees C to lows of 25 degrees C.

Book your tour in advance to avail of lower rates. April is the busiest month for tourism. However, avail of cheaper accommodations when you consider traveling to less crowded months of March and November.

Traveling from Manila to Vigan, Ilocos Sur

From 6-7 hours of land travel, you will arrive at Ilocos Sur. If you are traveling in your car or a rental one, you will likely come earlier than commuting through public buses.

The fastest way, however, is thru a flight from Manila to Laoag in Ilocos Norte. After that, you will ride a bus with routes going to Vigan City.

1. Calle Crisologo

The most famous Vigan tourist spot is the Calle Crisologo. This street sits in the heart of the Heritage Village recognized by UNESCO.

The grid street pattern of Calle Crisologo showcases century-old houses that line along the pavements made from cobblestones. Kalesa (horse-drawn carriage), however, is the only vehicle permitted to traverse the street.

Spend an early walk while the shops are starting to open so you can enjoy taking pictures without the crowd. The lower floor of these ancient houses is usually souvenir shops or restaurants.

Visiting in the afternoon, on the other hand, gives you an ambiance of the 18th-century vibe. Visitors dine at alfresco or enjoy some drinks to cap off the night.

Shopping for souvenirs and indulging in Ilocano foods are among the things to enjoy on your trip to Ilocos Sur. For extra fun, ride a kalesa while touring Calle Crisologo and other places within the Heritage Village.

2. Plaza Salcedo

The Plaza Salcedo is a nearby Vigan tourist spot not to miss when touring the downtown area. The place is a spacious open park for picture taking during the day and enjoying a free dancing fountain at night.

Pass by here to relax after a long day of a stroll from Calle Crisologo or Vigan Cathedral.

Watch the waters coming from the nozzles come to life as it dances to the beat of the music. Likewise, various lights project upward as the music’s tempo shifts from slow to a fast-paced rhythm.

It would help if you were here early, though, so you could secure a limited seat and enjoy the free show.

3. Vigan Cathedral

The Vigan Cathedral, also known as Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, sits in front of the Salcedo Plaza.

The thick walls you can see outside characterize a Baroque type of construction to resist earthquakes. While renovations improve its stability, notable features remain.

Spend a peaceful afternoon by visiting this Vigan tourist spot. The ornate silver panels of the main altar catch the attention of visitors. There are also 12 smaller altars and noticeable Chinese embellishments.

4. Bantay Church Bell Tower

The Bell Tower serves as a watchtower in the town of Bantay during the 15th century and World War II.

The belfry sits on top of a hill, and you need to climb the stairs before setting foot at it. Upon reaching the brick structure, an enormous bell hangs at the center. An overlooking view of the town of Bantay and Vigan rewards you after all.

Snap a photo with the belfry as a backdrop, or perform a jump shot for added fun. Ensure to register first at the Tourist Center and request a guide before proceeding to this nearby Vigan tourist spot.

Here’s a fun fact. According to recorded history, Heroes Diego and Gabriella Silang dated on this place during the 17th century.

5. Plaza Burgos

Together with the Plaza Salcedo, the Plaza Burgos are the two main parks in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. Fronting across Burgos Street is the Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral.

A late afternoon stroll is not complete without tasting their street foods. Here, you get to try their famous empanada, a fried roll filled with minced meat, egg, and vegetables.

The statue is a reminder of Father Jose P. Burgos’ martyrdom during the Spanish colonial.

6. Padre Burgos House

Locally known as  Bahay Na Bato  (stone house), this museum extends the National Museum in Ilocos Sur. This place is where the late Father Burgos grew up.

Learn from the displays and writings of how Father Burgos fought for the equality of Filipino priests. Some of the priest’s belongings, including his old writing tools, photographs, and family antiques, are among the things you can appreciate on your visit.

Aside from Father Burgos’ memorabilia, the museum also holds a series of paintings by Don Esteban Villanueva. The canvas shows an overview of the Basi Revolt against the Spanish rulers and their drastic move to quell the uprising.

7. Crisologo Museum

Another museum you should add to your Vigan tourist spot itinerary is the Crisologo Museum. A small vintage house turned into a museum in memory of the late politician Floro S. Crisologo.

An unidentified gunman has assassinated the statesman during his Sunday visit with his wife at Saint Paul Cathedral.

Have a glimpse of the past for free, and learn about the trivial political clan from Vigan. Here, you can learn about the prominent family’s contribution and influence to the province through memorabilia, scriptures, and displays.

The stained dress of the late politician is also among the displays in this museum.

8. Syquia Mansion

The Syquia Mansion is an ancestral property where the late President Elpidio Quirino lived with his family.

His wife’s family owns the house and transformed it into a museum that showcases the former president’s memorabilia.

Appreciate the classic interior elements of what was once a presidential villa. It features a high ceiling, hardwood flooring, antique wood furniture, porcelain jars.

You even get to check the secret hallways for servants back then, so guests cannot see them.

Visiting this Vigan tourist spot, along with the other museums, is both fun and informative.

9. Chapel By The Ruins

When you visit the Saint Augustine Church, don’t forget to pass by a small chapel within its compound.

This place is the remnant of the old church from the destruction during World War II. The walled vicinity and open space make it a spot for a silent moment and reflection.

Say a little prayer on the bench, and appreciate the greens around the walls. The antique displays add a vintage vibe, though.

10. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

13. Ilocos Sur Adventure Zone

The Adventure Zone is for outdoor fun-seekers during the day and dines at restaurants in Calle Crisologo at night.

More than visiting the museums, tourist has a chance to spend a different day filled with adrenaline-rocking activities.

The main attraction is its 400-meter long zipline, which requires you to first climb a 5 level platform. You will then traverse the Abra River, which is usually calm and clear during the summer.

Parallel to the zipline is the postcard-like Quirino Bridge that connects the towns of Bantay and Santa.

This Ilocos Sur tourist spot also offers other activities worth trying like rock climbing and rappelling, kayaking, and giant swing.

14. Twin Bridge

The Quirino Bridge and Banaoang Bridge both span across the Abra River.

The Banaoang bridge replaced the Quirino Bridge. Years after its impairment from a typhoon, the local government has initiated refurbishment to restore its beauty.

The old bridge makes a scenic spot for photographers, thanks to its metal framing construction. Likewise, the mountains on both sides add a dramatic effect as a backdrop.

15. Narvacan Outdoor Adventure Hub (NOAH)

The outdoor complex sits perfectly between a mountain and the sea. They offer activities like paragliding, mountain climbing, off-road driving, and kitesurfing.

For the brave heart, you get to try their  Via Perrata , a.k.a Iron Path. When gears are all set, you will start climbing to its fixed iron rungs. The steel cable securely guides with the harness and the connected hook. After reaching the peak, you will be descending thru a Tyrolean traverse.

The beach features jet black sand that is rich in iron ore and magnetite. It has strong currents year-round, but walking along its shoreline still calls for a charming activity.

Visiting in the afternoon is ideal for a sunset view, as it lies on the west coast.

17. Santiago Cove

If you are coming from Metro Manila, you will be passing by the town of Santiago. Frequently missed by tourists, a small paradise lies on its cove.

The Sabangan Cove, or commonly referred to as Santiago Cove, has fine white sands. Unlike the Mindoro beach, the water here is calm and is perfect for a quick swim.

The road along the coast is a great spot to jog early in the morning or at dawn.

If you plan to spend a lunch picnic on the beach, there are cottages you can rent.

18. Munch to their Ilocano Dishes

Aside from the many Vigan tourist spots, Ilocos Sur is also known for its empanada. It is a fried stuffing rolled in a flour dough with vibrant, orange color.

The filling combines a mixture of shredded green papaya, minced pork sausage (longganisa), and a raw egg, rolled together and deep-fried.

Try tasting their Sinanglaw as well. It is a soup-based dish made from beef meat, and its innards are savored with garlic, ginger, onion, and  kamias . It pairs well with a local beer when you’re spending late-night drinks.

Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur Travel Guide

Classic but never gets old. Ilocos remains one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines.

The most common option to get to Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte is by bus with 10-12 hours travel time. Van transport is another alternative especially when you’re travelling as a group. Our visit to Ilocos on the other hand is done thru roadtrip. We selected the tourist attractions that suit our interest and time.

Paoay Church

The Saint Augustine Church in Paoay Ilocos Norte is famous for its distinctive architecture with massive and thick buttresses on its sides and back. It was perceived as a support to withstand the earthquakes. Paoay Church is declared a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippines and UNESCO World Heritage Site under the collective group of Baroque Churches of the Philippines.

The Bell Tower adjacent to the church is built separately on the right side and served as observational post during the revolution against the Spaniards.

Paoay Church and its Bell Tower are places not to skip when in Ilocos.

Paoay Sand Dunes

Experience a different kind of adventure in Paoay Sand Dunes when you ride the 4×4 jeep while it crosses over and down the hills like a roller coaster ride. This bumpy and dusty thrilling ride is a must when in Ilocos. It gives you an unforgettable experience and adrenaline rush.

The sand dunes are made from loose sands and oftenly shape by the prevailing wind coming from the West Philippine Sea and lie adjacent to Suba Beach. The long stretch of sand dunes encompasses the towns of Currimao to Pasuquin Ilocos Norte.

Aside from the 4×4 ride, another worth-trying activity is the sand boarding. It is like sliding in a swimming pool, the only difference is you’ll be riding on a board and slides downhill. It is quick and easy, you just need to follow the instruction and maintain your balance. Sand boarding is unlimited when you get the package for Php2,500 good for 5 persons. We got a discounted rate of Php1,800 when someone offered it when we’re in Paoay Church.

Before you end your sand dunes experience, make sure to drop by near the beach. The place is really captivating and picture-perfect.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

This beautiful creamy white rock formation is located in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The limestone formation is molded naturally by ocean waves and weather through time.        

Kapurpurawan today transformed entirely from a raw scenic attraction to a mainstream tourist spot. Compared to our visit in 2014, Kapurpurawan is now populated with souvenir stands and other small establishments. Horseback riding is also a common activity.

A good development in Burgos is the presence of windmills. It adds up to its originally beautiful backdrop and a big source of electricity in the province. Flying of drone in Kapurpurawan is prohibited.

Bangui Windmills

The Bangui Windmills are probably one of the trademarks of Ilocos province. These gigantic wind turbines generate electricity for nearly 40% of the province’s electrical power. Ilocos Norte tends to have more wind than other provinces due to its location between the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean making it an ideal place for wind turbines projects.

Tourism-wise, these windmills attract tourists all over the country even for foreigners because of its unique charm and graphic landscape. Several times it was featured in TV segments, travel blogs and even served as prenup spot.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is also known as Maira-Ira Point and is located in Pagudpod, Ilocos Norte. It is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the North. It has fine white sand and clear bluish water. Hotels, resorts and homestays are just around the corner giving you a lot of options to stay.

The place is also perfect for swimming with several exciting water activities like banana boat ride, jetski and zipline.

Bantay Abot Cave

Bantay Abot Cave is the nearest tourist spot from Blue Lagoon. Its significant distinction is the hole in the middle and green vegetation on its top. Getting in the interior, one needs to go down a few cemented staircases and some rock formation.

Patapat Viaduct

The Patapat Bridge or Patapat Viaduct is one of the most scenic and most photographed tourist destinations in Ilocos Norte. It is located on the northernmost tip of Luzon Island and connects Ilocos Norte to Cagayan Valley region.

Patapat Viaduct’s long and series of arches plus the superb ocean view are its main attractions giving the visitors an ideal picture spot.

On the way to Pagudpod, there is this beautiful cliff with picturesque windmill backdrop and beach cove at the sides. Getting here requires a short trek for at least 5 minutes. Still looking for this place’s name but couldn’t find one online. Take note, this is definitely worth visiting!

Vigan and Calle Crisologo

Not a question at all. You should visit Vigan and the famous Calle Crisologo when in Ilocos Sur and travel back in time with its preserved and timeless beauty.

It is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It illustrates the Spanish era time with its cobblestones streets, ancestral houses and old buildings.

Vigan is the place to buy souvenirs, printed shirts, jars, antique home decorations, Vigan empanada, bagnet, Vigan longganisa and many others.

Day or night, Vigan is lively and pleasing to the eyes. You can’t go wrong checking Vigan when going to Ilocos.

There are a lot of options to get to Ilocos, choose which mode you think is most convenient to you and your group.

• Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines offers flight from Manila to Laoag International Airport in Ilocos Norte.

Private Transportation

• The best way is to use Waze
• From Manila, travel time is around 10 – 12 hours with rest stops
• Several Bus Lines like Florida Bus and Partas have regular bus trips from Manila to Vigan or Laoag.
• Bus fare may range from Php650+Php950
• Travel time is 10-12 hours.

ILOCOS SUR Travel Requirements for Tourists

Leisure travelers are now welcome again in Ilocos Sur. In accordance to the Executive Order No.31, tourism activities in this Region 1 province has resumed. But like other destinations in the Philippines that has reopened to tourists, health and safety protocols are still in place.

Tourists are required to prepare and submit necessary documents prior to their intended travel date to be allowed entry. Along with the other provinces in Region 1, Ilocos Sur is using the Tara Na! website where visitors can check the required documents they need and schedule their travel. This is also where you can generate a QR Code that is essential when you visit the province.

In this post, you’ll find out what you need to prepare for your trip if you’re planning to visit Ilocos Sur.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Book a tour with a DOT-Accredited Travel Agency or Tour Operator.

Tourists visiting Ilocos Sur must have a pre-booked tour with an accredited tour operator or travel agency. This is to help manage and monitor the limited operating capacity of the tourists spots.

Below is the list of the authorized travel and tour companies with which you can book a tour.

2. Complete the requirements.

Note: Tourists from areas under Alert Level 5 are NOT ALLOWED.

For Fully Vaccinated Travelers

Fully vaccinated travelers coming from areas under Alert Levels 1-3 must present the following:

• Covid-19 Vaccination Card
• Booking confirmation with accredited hotel or agent
• S-Pass TCP (Travel Coordination Permit). Here’s how to get a TCP!

Children 17 years and below, whether vaccinated or not, as long as they are accompanied by fully vaccinated adults, are treated as fully vaccinated.

For Unvaccinated / Partially Vaccinated Travelers

• Negative Antigen test result, issued within 24 hours prior to entry. (For frequent border crossers, antigen test result is valid for 14 days.)

NOTE: Although the S-Pass TCP is not included in the Dec 1 list published by the official Ilocos Sur Tourism page, it is included in the December 3 list published by PIA-Ilocos Sur. Just secure one to be on the safe side.

3. Apply for a Tourist Pass at Tara Na! Visita.

To apply for a Tourist Pass, you must sign up for a Tara Na! VISITA account first. You can register here.

After creating an account, you need to submit the details of your trip and schedule your visit. You must do this at least 5 days prior to your intended travel date.

4. Save or print your QR Coded Tourist Pass.

Once you have a Tara Na! VISITA account, download and save or print your QR Tourist Pass (QTP). Make sure to keep this with you at all times when you travel to Ilocos Sur.

7. Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Kabigan Falls is another hidden gem nestled within the lush forests of Pagudpud waiting to be discovered by tourists and visitors. It’s a small and lovely waterfall with a height of 87 feet and a speck of natural pool where you can swim and relax after a long day of exploring the beautiful attractions of Ilocos Norte.

The narrow body of white crystal clear water cascading down the stunning rock formation is already a sight you will truly remember. So don’t forget to take some pictures!

Oh, and I should warn you that Kabigan Falls is tucked deep within the forest so it will require some trekking and hiking to reach and leave the area. Well, those are already fun and exciting activities in themselves so why not give it a try, right?

10. Sinking Bell Tower

Did the name catch your attention too? Well, you’re not alone because the same goes for thousands of tourists who already visited and witnessed the enchanting beauty of the Sinking Bell Tower in Laoag. If you’re familiar with the Leaning Tower of Pisa, this one’s very similar to that! It is said that the mysterious Bell Tower sinks at a rate of one inch per year and no one exactly knows why. Another odd thing about the tower is that it’s about 80 meters away from the cathedral it’s supposed to be attached to!

Mind-boggling, isn’t it? Well, that’s exactly part of the reason why countless tourists visit this mysterious cultural landmark. And I bet that you’re also intrigued to visit it after reading this!

11. Malacañang of the North

Another significant cultural and historical attraction in Ilocos Norte is the Malacañang of the North . This presidential museum located in Paoay actually served as the presidential mansion of the Marcos family during the term of President Ferdinand Marcos.

The building in itself is already an incredible tourist attraction having great architecture and scenic views overlooking Paoay Lake. To this date, the Malacañang of the North serves an important role in preserving our country’s history housing significant artifacts and memorabilia regarding the rich history of President Marcos’ legacy.

The Paoay Lake National Park is indeed a natural wonder you shouldn’t miss in Ilocos Norte. It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places to visit in the province where you can just relax and enjoy the breathtaking view of the lake, the stunning landscape, and the fresh mountain air.

The largest lake in Ilocos Norte is also a popular spot for family picnics and sightseeing that’s perfect for countless memory-making opportunities!

The famous St. William’s Cathedral or more popularly known as the Laoag Church is another historical landmark that served as the pride of Ilocos Norte. The church as we know it was built in the year 1612 and until now it is still perfectly preserved and able to depict the rich religious history of Ilocos Norte. The extraordinary features of the Italian Renaissance-inspired architectural design of the cathedral are already an attraction in themselves!

Oh, and the Laoag Church is also the cathedral supposedly attached to the mysterious Sinking Bell Tower, so might as well pay a visit there too!

15. Juan Luna Shrine

Finally, the most fitting way to end our Ilocos Norte adventure is by visiting the famous Juan Luna Shrine located in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. The shrine is actually a representation of the very house where Juan Luna grew up. We all know that Luna is one of the most notable national heroes who fought the Spanish government through his paintings. Some of Juan Luna’s iconic paintings are Spoliarium, The Death of Cleopatra, and Exposicion Nacional de Bellas Artes.

Some of Juan Luna’s brother, General Antonio Luna’s significant memorabilia can also be found in this museum along with their respective personal items from childhood.

11 Things to do in Abra + Tourist Spots

For a long time, Abra province had been a blank spot on the Philippine tourist map… until photos of #2 on this list got viral online. Travelers are now starting to explore many travel-worthy sights in this landlocked province.

Abra is often skipped partly because of its location in North Luzon. It is sandwiched between two very popular tourist destinations — Ilocos in the west and the Cordilleras in the east. What you’re going to see in Abra is a mix of both. You can find Spanish-colonial heritage sites and Ilokano culture as well as captivating mountain views and hill tribe traditions.

1. Kili Falls & Hot Spring

Kili Falls is one of many beautiful places in Abra that you can visit all year round. The main attraction here is not just the waterfall. Hidden behind the main cascade is a hot spring that flows into an icy-cold river. The locals had made a wading pool beside it. The temperature is perfectly warm for a dip! Most times of the year, you can have this relaxing spot all to yourself. Kili Village does not attract a lot of tourists because of its remote location in the hinterlands of Tubo, the southernmost town of Abra. The trail to the waterfall from the village crosses scenic rice fields and a few hanging bridges similar to what you would find in Banaue, Ifugao, Benguet or Mountain Province.

How to go :

Brgy. Kili in Tubo is a 3 to 4-hour drive south of Bangued, the capital town of Abra. The passenger jeepney departs from “Tubo House” in Bangued in the morning, at around 8am. There is no fixed schedule and daily jeepney trips are not guaranteed. If there are no jeepney trips on the day of your visit, you have the option to charter a car or motorcycle that can take you to Kili. From Kili village, the waterfall and hot spring is an easy 20-minute walk away.

2. Kaparkan Falls

This waterfall is one big reason to go to Abra. Not because of its size, but its extraordinary appearance. Unlike most waterfalls in the Philippines, which are formed by roaring cascades, Kaparkan Falls is distinguished by multi-tiered spring pools/terraces that gently cascade down the forest.

Kaparkan / Kaparcan / Caparkan Falls is also known as Mulawin Falls.

Kaparkan Falls is located in Tineg, the northernmost town of Abra. Getting there is an adventure in itself as it requires a 4×4 ride along very rough roads. The ride from Bangued takes around 2 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions. Tineg tourism department organizes transport on a military truck or jeepney. The trucks leave Bangued at 7-8am, while the return trip from the falls departs at 2pm. The months from August to November is the best and only time to schedule your trip since the waterfall dries up during the other half of the year.

3. Apao Rolling Hills

Apao Rolling Hills is another obscure spot that you can see in Tineg, Abra. From the viewpoint across the high valley, enjoy a picturesque panorama of dry grassland topped mountains. It is most scenic during sunset when the mountainsides come alive with a spectacular auburn glow.

The viewpoint of Apao Rolling Hills is located a few kilometers away from Tineg Municipal Hall.

4. Piwek Rock Formation

This natural beauty can be found farther down the road from Apao Rolling Hills. The highlights here are gleaming white limestone rock formations that wall the banks of the Tineg River.

From Brgy. Alaoa in Tineg, a local guide can take you across the river on a bamboo raft to Piwek Rock Formations. There are two trails to choose from. The harder yet exciting way requires a bit of rock climbing over large boulders. The easier one is a less steep hike.

5. Don Mariano Marcos Bridge

Spanning over the mighty Abra River, the Don Mariano Marcos Bridge is the 3rd longest bridge in the Philippines. Stop over for scenic views of the riverbanks and mountainscape.

Don Mariano Marcos Bridge is located along the Abra – Kalinga Road, between the towns of Dolores and Tayum. You will pass through it on your way to Tineg.

6. Tayum Church & Heritage Houses

Santa Catalina de Alejandria Parish Church found within the town proper of Tayum is the most impressive Spanish-colonial church in Abra. This 19th-century Baroque church was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. Nearby, you can also find many surviving ancestral houses built in Bahay Na Bato style.

Tayum is located beside Bangued. Getting there takes around 10 to 20 minutes by car or tricycle.

7. Gabriela Carino-Silang Gallery of Fine Arts

Also worth a peak in Tayum is the former headquarters of Gabriela Silang. She is known widely as the Joan of Arc of Ilocania for being the first female leader of a Filipino movement for independence from Spain. Within the compound is the Gabriel Silang Gallery of Fine Arts, a private museum owned by the Cariño family that houses collections of retired Philippine Ambassador Rosario V. Carino. This gallery is filled with an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, artifacts, documents and books from different parts of the world that the former ambassador had amassed during his professional career. Its prized pieces include paintings by Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Domenico Ghirlandaioto as well as paintings made by the former ambassador himself.

Gabriel Silang Gallery of Fine Arts is located along Teodoro Balmaceda Street in Poblacion, Tayum. It is a short walk away from the Tayum Church.

8. Teofilo Garcia Tabungaw Guord Hats

Another honored artisan from Abra is Teofilo Garcia, a National Living Treasure Awardee who specializes in making traditional hats made from gourds (upo) or kattokong nga tabungaw. The all-weather headgear is primarily made from native gourds that he grows and harvests himself. The insides are hollowed out, dried, and lined with finely woven rattan matting, while the top part is applied with bright orange or red varnish to make for weather resistance. Mr. Garcia is the only one left in his village who still makes these rather whimsical looking masterpieces. He is currently reaching out to young people in his village who are interested in learning the craft. Visitors are welcome to see his workshop and buy a hat in support of keeping the traditional tabungaw-making alive and vibrant.

Teofilo Garcia’s workshop is located in the town of San Quintin. You can find it along the main road between Bangued and Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. From the highway intersection in San Quintin, drive or walk up the narrow uphill road. The workshop is located a few hundred meters ahead. GPS location: 17.525310, 120.544114.

9. Abel Loom Weaving in La Paz

The town of La Paz is home to a traditional loom weaving industry specialized in producing fine woven fabrics called abel. These textiles are hand loomed by women of the village who have learned the craft from their mothers and grandmothers. Leila’s Loom weaving is one of the largest suppliers of abel in Abra. You can visit their workshop in Brgy. Bulbulala if you want to see how abel is hand-made by the local weavers. They usually have finished products in stock if you are interested in purchasing.

From Bangued market, ride a ride the jeepney to La Paz. Drop off at the intersection to Brgy. Bulbulala. Leila’s Loom weaving is a short tricycle ride from there.

10. Bangued

A trip to Abra starts in Bangued, the capital town of the province. Go to the view deck of Victoria Park at Cassamata Hill National Park to get a bird’s eye view of Abra’s plains, mighty rivers, and mountain peaks. There are a few heritage sites to see in town including the Cathedral of Saint James the Greater (Bangued Church) and San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine (cemetery chapel).

You can catch a direct bus from Manila to Bangued. Travel time takes around 8 hours. Or, from Ilocos Norte via Narvacan. Travel time from Narvacan takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Meanwhile, travel time from Vigan takes around 2 hours.

How to get to Abra

Bangued, the capital of Abra is the tourist gateway and transport hub in the province. Travel time from Manila takes around 8 hours. The most popular and reliable bus operators are Partas, Dominion, and Viron. Although part of the Cordillera Region, the easiest way to Abra passes by the national highway in Ilocos Sur, North Luzon. From the highway intersection in the town of Narvacan, the road branches inland towards Bangued. This leg of the trip takes only 45 minutes to 1 hour. The nearest major city is Vigan, located 2 hours away. Meanwhile, the nearest airport is Laoag Airport, located 4 hours away.

On your arrival in Bangued, visit the tourism department under the Office of the Congressman, Lone District of Abra. You can find their office at DPWH compound, cor. Taft & Magallanes St., Abra – Kalinga Rd, Poblacion, Bangued ( see map ). The tourism officer on duty can help you with questions you may have about arranging your trip in the province. I have to check my notes again for our budget breakdown. For Kili & Bangued-Tayum, you might spend around P4K to P5K per person including the bus ride from Manila. For Tineg, the motorcycle charter (whole day from Bangued) should cost around +P1,500, while a jeepney costs between +P4K to P5K.

You can go to Bangued easily by private vehicle, but the roads to remote places in Abra is very terrible. If your car is not fit for it, I suggest that you charter transport in Bangued.

You can seek advice from the tourism office under the Office of the Congressman, Lone District of Abra. Their office is inside the DPWH Compound, Bangued.

Should take 3 to 5 days (starting in Bangued) by own or hired transport to visit Kili, Kaparkan and the other easily accessible spots mentioned. If you are commuting, it may take longer depending on the schedule of trips.

I didn’t take full note of the expenses, but it wasn’t too expensive. The lion share of our spending was the transport to Kili from Bangued & v.v.

Yes, but I don’t encourage it. Availability of transport to the area is very limited. You risk not being able to find transpo if you go without prior arrangements.

I would really love to visit Kaparkan Falls. Is it difficult to reach the falls? I’m in my mid 40s and I don’t have the greatest balance. How hard is the trek/ climb? Thanks and best regards.

Typically, you travel by land from Banguet to Kaparkan Falls, on a very rough road. It’s a short easy walk to the falls from the drop-off/parking area.
