Georgia Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: January 3, 2024

Georgia Visa Image

Georgia has one of the world’s most uncomplicated visa policies. Many nationalities are offered a visa exemption of up to a whole year. Most of the rest can quickly obtain a Georgia visa online (eVisa).

Even those nationalities that are not eligible for an eVisa can get a tourist visa from one of the many Georgian embassies abroad.

Georgia is a remarkably welcoming country and tourism is booming. In this article, you will find everything you need to know about tourist visas for Georgia:

  • Who is exempt from a visa
  • What kinds of Georgian tourist visas exist and which one is best for you
  • What are the visa requirements
  • How to obtain a tourist visa for Georgia
  • What are the entry and exit procedures

Table of Contents

Georgia visa policy.

Georgia allows visa-free entry to citizens of 101 countries and territories, including the EU, US, UK, Australia, and Canada (full list below).

In general, visa-exempt individuals can stay up to 365 days, one of the most generous allowances in the world.

Visa-exempt are also those holding valid visas or residence permits for the EU, US, Australia, and Canada among others (full list below). The duration of the visa exemption in this case is up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

In addition, most other nationalities can get a multiple-entry eVisa online allowing stays for up to 30 or 90 days depending on their passport.

GEORGIA VISA TYPES

There are three main ways to enter Georgia as a tourist.

  • Take advantage of the generous visa exemption
  • Acquire an eVisa through the Georgian government eVisa portal
  • Apply for a regular tourist visa from one of the Georgian diplomatic missions abroad

GEORGIA VISA REQUIREMENTS

Georgia visa requirements by nationality

If you intend to visit Georgia as a tourist, bear in mind the certain conditions and requirements for obtaining a visa and entering the country.

Passport validity required to enter Georgia as a tourist

The passport validity required depends on the method you use to enter Georgia.

Entering Visa Exempt

If you are visa-exempt, your passport should be valid at the time of entry and for the intended duration of your stay. This is despite the fact that a visa exemption is granted for up to 365 days. Note that this requirement may be different for other countries you may want to visit in the region.

Entering on an eVisa

If you’re applying for an eVisa, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months over the validity of the eVisa. This is regardless of your actual dates of entry or exit from the country.

For example, if your Georgian eVisa is valid from 5 August 2024 until 5 December 2024, then your passport must be valid until at least 5 March 2025 (3 months after the expiry date of the eVisa)

Entering on a tourist visa from a Georgian embassy

Should you not be eligible for an eVisa and instead have to apply at an embassy, then the required passport validity may be different depending on your location and will be confirmed by the embassy itself.

In general, for a Georgian tourist visa, embassies require that your passport is valid for at least 3 months more than the validity of the issued visa (just like with the eVisa).

Return or onward ticket out of Georgia

A return or onward ticket is not required to enter Georgia if you’re visa-exempt.

It is required if entering using an eVisa. Border officers rarely ask but should they, you must be prepared. If you don’t have plans yet, consider using an onward ticket service .

Officially, if you are traveling by other means of transport, a flight ticket is not required.

If you’re applying for a visa from an embassy of Georgia, then the embassy will likely ask for both a flight into the country and out of it.

GEORGIA eVISA

Georgia e-Visa - step-by-step guide

Obtaining a Georgian eVisa online is the easiest way to visit Georgia if you’re not from a country that’s visa-exempt. Check out this in-depth Georgian eVisa guide for detailed information.

eVisa validity

The eVisa validity is either 120 days or 180 days depending on the country. These denote the length of time when you can enter Georgia. Do not mistake this for the length of allowed stay.

The eVisa allows access for either 30 days (out of a 120-day period) or 90 days (out of a 180-day period) depending on the passport you’re applying with. Refer to the lists above to see the countries that are eligible for either duration of the eVisa.

The Georgian eVisa allows multiple entries. This means that during the validity of the visa, you can leave Georgia (say, to visit neighboring Armenia or Azerbaijan) and later reenter.

You cannot stay in Georgia longer than 30 or 90 days respectively even if you leave and reenter.

For example, if you hold an Indian passport (allowed 30 days within a 120-day period) and stay in Georgia for 20 days, leave the country then reenter on the same eVisa, you will only be able to stay 10 more days.

Documents required

Everyone applying for the eVisa must have these documents when starting the application:

  • A scanned copy of a valid passport’s ID page in PDF format
  • Compliant with the ICAO standards
  • Maximum size of 472 x 600 pixels or 4 x 5.16 cm
  • 300 DPI resolution
  • Your debit or credit card ready to pay the 20$ eVisa fee.

The following list of things, you declare that you can present to the border official if asked. They are not required to obtain the eVisa, but you may be asked to show any or all of them at the border.

  • Travel Insurance
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Hotel reservation
  • Proof that you have sufficient funds to cover all the costs associated with your trip to Georgia

Application procedure

The application for the Georgian eVisa is incredibly simple and straightforward. The official Georgian eVisa website is well-made and user-friendly. Completing the application will take you around 15 minutes.

Refer to this step-by-step guide about applying to the Georgian eVisa for the detailed procedure. To summarize, the main steps are:

  • Check eVisa eligibility and the necessary documents according to nationality
  • Pick the start date of the eVisa validity
  • Enter personal information and upload a photo
  • Verify all information and receive an email confirmation
  • Approve the application in your email within 5 hours
  • Pay the eVisa through the online portal
  • Receive the Georgian eVisa in your email within 5 business days

GEORGIA TOURIST VISA FROM THE EMBASSY

Georgia Visa Sample

Unlike the simple eVisa, obtaining a tourist visa from a Georgian embassy is a little more complicated.

Officially, the Georgian government requires that people apply for visas in an embassy in their own country. If there is no Georgian embassy, then they must apply in the closest neighboring state’s embassy.

Application requirements

The required documents may differ from country to country. Please consult with the Georgian embassy.

You must present:

  • Valid at least 3 months more than the expiry of the visa
  • Containing at least 2 empty pages
  • Issued within the last 10 years
  • Visa application filled out electronically
  • Receipt of payment of consular fee (50$)
  • Digital color photo (3×4)
  • Bank statement showing you have enough money to cover your expenses
  • Return ticket
  • (Maybe also) Proof of employment or study, proof of family bonds or proof of owning property
  • (Maybe also) Itinerary for Georgia and/or written intentions for visit
  • (Maybe also) Letter of Invitation

TRAVELING TO ABKHAZIA AND SOUTH OSSETIA

Abkhazia and South Ossetia are two territories considered by Georgia an intrinsic part of their country but occupied by Russia.

Without going into the politics of the issue, they are generally not covered under the Georgian tourist visa nor the visa exemption. This means that you must obtain an additional separate visa for Abkhazia or permission from the MFA to visit South Ossetia if you wish to enter either of them.

ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURE AT THE AIRPORT

Shota Rustaveli Airport in Tbilisi Georgia

Entering Georgia by Air

Head straight to the immigration desks. If you’re from a visa-exempt country present your passport, receive a stamp, and enjoy Georgia.

If you hold a visa or a residence permit from an eligible country, present it with your passport to prove visa-exempt status.

If you have an e-visa or a regular tourist visa from the embassy, proceed to the immigration desks and be ready to present all documents that the border officer may ask for. These are listed in the ‘documents required’ and ‘application requirements’ above.

When you receive the stamp in your passport, double-check the date you must leave by and proceed to baggage reclaim or the arrivals area.

Leaving Georgia by Air

When exiting Georgia at the airport, you must pass passport control. Present your passport and boarding card and proceed. Unless you’ve overstayed your visa, it should be seamless.

ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURE AT THE LAND BORDER

Entering georgia by train.

The train from Armenia to Georgia stops at the Armenia-Georgia border where you will have to get off the train and line up at the immigration office.

If you hold a visa or residence permit from an eligible country, present it to the immigration officers. If you hold an eVisa, present it along with your passport.

The Georgian border checkpoint at the Armenia-Georgia border is notorious for strict screening, questioning and deportation. Therefore, make sure you carry every piece of documentation that can help convince the immigration officers that you are a genuine tourist and would leave the country promptly after your trip.

Make sure you carry the following:

  • Your onward or return ticket
  • Hotel reservation for the entire trip
  • Travel medical insurance covering the entire trip
  • At least 1,000 USD in cash per person

IMPORTANT Carrying enough cash in USD is very important. The immigration officers do not consider credit/debit cards, bank statements or bank apps as proof of financial means. They only consider cash in USD. So make sure you carry at least 1,000 USD in cash per person.

Leaving Georgia by Train

When leaving Georgia by train, you do not have to get off the train. The immigration officers come into the train and stamp you out in your passport.

Visa Information

Traveling to Georgia can be an incredible experience, but it's essential to understand the country's visa requirements and entry procedures before embarking on your journey. As a foreign visitor, being well-informed about the necessary documentation and processes will help ensure a smooth and stress-free entry into this captivating country. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore Georgia's entry requirements and visa procedures for various nationalities, making it easier for you to plan your trip and navigate the visa process with confidence.

Visa-Free Travel To Georgia

List of countries eligible for visa-free travel.

Georgia has a visa-free travel policy for citizens of many countries, making it easier for travelers to visit this beautiful nation without the need for a visa. Citizens of the European Union, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and several other countries can enter Georgia visa-free.

Duration Of Visa-Free Stays

Visa-free visitors are typically allowed to stay in Georgia for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This duration provides ample time to explore the country and experience its rich culture and stunning landscapes.

Entry Requirements For Visa-Free Visitors

Although a visa may not be required, there are still some entry requirements that travelers need to meet. Visa-free visitors from most countries must possess a valid passport or a travel document with at least three months' validity remaining from the date of entry into Georgia. However, citizens of European Union member states and a few other countries can enter Georgia using just their national ID cards. Additionally, visitors should be able to provide proof of the purpose of their visit, such as a hotel reservation or an invitation letter, if applicable. It's important to note that entry requirements may change, so it's always a good idea to check with the Georgian consulate or embassy in your country before traveling.

For more information, contact us or please check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia: https://geoconsul.gov.ge/en

Georgian E-Visa

Eligible countries and application process.

For travelers who are not eligible for visa-free entry or just using their ID cards, Georgia offers an e-Visa option. Citizens of several countries can apply for a Georgian e-Visa online before their trip. To check if your country is on the eligible list, visit the official e-Visa portal of the Georgian government. The application process is relatively straightforward, requiring applicants to fill out a form, upload required documents, and pay the necessary fees online.

Required Documents And Fees

To apply for a Georgian e-Visa, applicants need to provide a digital copy of their passport, a recent passport-sized photo, and proof of travel arrangements, such as a round-trip flight ticket and hotel reservation. Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of the visit. The fees for e-Visas vary based on the type and duration of the visa, typically ranging from $20 to $100.

Processing Times And Validity

The processing time for Georgian e-Visas is usually around five working days, but it's recommended to apply at least two weeks before your planned trip to allow for any potential delays. Once approved, the e-Visa is sent to the applicant's email and must be printed and presented upon arrival in Georgia. The validity of the e-Visa depends on the type of visa granted, with tourist e-Visas typically valid for 30 or 90 days, while other categories, such as business or study visas, may have different durations. It is important to ensure that you apply for the appropriate visa category for your intended purpose of travel.

  • Georgian Visitor Visa (C-Visa)

Eligibility Criteria And Application Process

Travelers who are neither eligible for visa-free entry nor e-Visa may need to apply for a Georgian visitor visa (C-Visa) before their trip. The Georgian visitor visa is designed for short-term stays for various purposes, such as tourism, business, family visits, and more. To apply for a C-Visa, applicants must visit the nearest Georgian consulate or embassy in their country of residence. The application process involves filling out a visa application form, providing the required documents, and paying the applicable fees.

Types Of Visitor Visas (Tourism, Business, Etc.)

There are several types of Georgian visitor visas, each tailored to specific purposes, such as tourism (C1), business (C2), cultural, sports, and scientific events (C3), medical treatment (C4), and family visits (C5). It's crucial to apply for the correct type of visa based on the intended purpose of your visit.

To apply for a Georgian visitor visa, applicants need to provide a valid passport, a recent passport-sized photo, proof of travel arrangements (such as round-trip flight tickets and accommodation bookings), and a valid health insurance policy covering the duration of their stay in Georgia. Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of the visit, such as an invitation letter for business or family visits, or a detailed itinerary for tourism. The fees for Georgian visitor visas vary based on the visa type and duration, typically ranging from $50 to $200. It's important to check the specific requirements and fees with the Georgian consulate or embassy in your country before applying.

  • Georgian Immigration Visa (D-Visa)

For individuals planning to stay in Georgia for an extended period or intending to work, study, or engage in other long-term activities, a Georgian immigration visa (D-Visa) is required. Similar to the visitor visa, applicants need to visit the nearest Georgian consulate or embassy in their country of residence to apply for a D-Visa. The application process involves filling out a visa application form, providing the required documents, and paying the applicable fees.

Types Of Immigration Visas (Work, Study, Etc.)

There are several types of Georgian immigration visas, each designed for specific long-term purposes, such as work (D1), study (D2), family reunification (D3), entrepreneurship (D4), and investment (D5). It's essential to apply for the correct type of visa based on the intended purpose of your long-term stay in Georgia.

To apply for a Georgian immigration visa, applicants need to provide a valid passport, a recent passport-sized photo, proof of financial means for the duration of their stay, a valid health insurance policy, and a certificate of no criminal record. Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of the visit, such as an employment contract for work visas, a letter of acceptance from a Georgian educational institution for study visas, or proof of investment for investment visas. The fees for Georgian immigration visas vary based on the visa type and duration, typically ranging from $100 to $300. It's important to check the specific requirements and fees with the Georgian consulate or embassy in your country before applying.

Visa Extensions And Overstays

Procedures for extending a visa.

If you need to extend your stay in Georgia beyond the initially granted period, it's essential to apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires. The process usually involves visiting the Public Service Development Agency or an authorized service center in Georgia to submit a visa extension application form along with the required documents and fees. Visa extension requirements may vary depending on the type of visa you hold, so it's crucial to check the specific procedures and ensure you have all the necessary documentation in place.

Consequences Of Overstaying A Visa

Overstaying a visa in Georgia can result in serious consequences, including fines, deportation, and being banned from re-entering the country for a specific period. The severity of the penalties depends on the duration of the overstay and the circumstances surrounding it. It's essential to be aware of the validity of your visa and plan accordingly to avoid any legal complications.

Tips For Avoiding Visa-Related Issues

To prevent any visa-related issues during your stay in Georgia, make sure to familiarize yourself with the entry requirements and visa procedures applicable to your specific situation. Keep track of your visa's expiration date and, if necessary, initiate the visa extension process well in advance to ensure that your application is processed in a timely manner. Lastly, always carry a copy of your passport and visa while traveling in Georgia, as you may be required to present these documents during routine identity checks or when using certain services.

  • Transit Visas

Eligibility Criteria And Application Process For Transit Visas

Transit visas are designed for travelers who need to pass through Georgia en route to another destination. Generally, travelers from countries that require a visa to enter Georgia must obtain a transit visa if they have a layover in the country. The application process for a transit visa is similar to that of other Georgian visas, involving submission of an application form along with the required documents and fees to the nearest Georgian consulate or embassy.

Duration And Conditions Of Transit Visas

Georgian transit visas typically allow for a short stay in the country, usually up to five days. This type of visa is meant for travelers who are merely passing through Georgia and not engaging in tourism or other activities. During the transit visa's validity, visitors are expected to remain within the airport or specific transit zones unless they have a valid reason to leave, such as a long layover requiring accommodation outside the airport.

The documents required for a Georgian transit visa application may include a valid passport, a completed visa application form, passport-sized photos, proof of onward travel (such as a flight reservation), and evidence of sufficient funds to cover the duration of the transit stay. Additionally, applicants may be required to provide a visa for the final destination, if necessary. The fees for a transit visa vary depending on the applicant's nationality and the processing time required. It's essential to consult the nearest Georgian consulate or embassy for the most up-to-date information on transit visa requirements and fees.

  • Special Entry Requirements

Additional Entry Requirements For Specific Countries

While many travelers can visit Georgia with minimal entry requirements, citizens of certain countries may be subject to additional conditions. These special requirements can include pre-approval from Georgian authorities or invitations from official sponsors within the country. It's essential to consult the Georgian consulate or embassy in your country for detailed information on any additional entry requirements specific to your nationality.

Health Requirements And Vaccinations

Georgia does not have any mandatory vaccination requirements for travelers. However, it is advisable to be up to date on routine vaccinations such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP), polio, and influenza. Depending on your travel plans and activities, additional vaccinations such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and rabies may be recommended. As of 2 November 2015 all applicants applying for a Schengen visa will be required to present their biometric data - ten fingerprints and a digital photo. Biometric data will be stored in the Visa Information System (VIS), which is a central database for the exchange of data on short-stay visas (for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period) between Schengen States. The main objectives of the VIS are to facilitate visa application procedures and checks at external border as well as to enhance security.

Therefore, as of 2 November 2015 all visa applicants will have to appear in person at the Visa Application Center for Greece, when lodging the application, in order to provide their fingerprints. Please note that appearance in person for all applicants regardless of age is mandatory for biometrics.

Under the VIS, mandatory fingerprinting is introduced for all passport categories. Consular sections must collect biometric data – digital photo and fingerprinting often fingers - from all visa applicants. Consequently, all visa applicants, irrespective of nationality, shall be required to present themselves at the Visa Application Center for Greece at the time of their visa application for the biometric data collection.

(*)[1]Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

The following categories of applicants are exempt from the requirement to provide fingerprints (Article 13(7) of the Visa Code):

  • Children under the age of 12;
  • Persons for whom fingerprinting is physically impossible. If the fingerprinting of fewer than 10 fingers is possible, the maximum number of fingerprints shall be taken. However, should the impossibility be temporary, the applicant shall be required to give the fingerprints at the following application. The authorities competent in accordance with Article 4(1), (2) and (3) shall be entitled to ask for further clarification of the grounds for the temporary impossibility. Member States shall ensure that appropriate procedures guaranteeing the dignity of the applicant are in place in the event of there being difficulties in enrolling;
  • Heads of State or government and members of a national government with accompanying spouses, and the members of their official delegation when they are invited by Member States’ governments or by international organizations for an official purpose;
  • Sovereigns and other senior members of a royal family, when they are invited by Member States’ governments or by international organizations for an official purpose.

Basic Procedure: Biometrics will be collected using a quick, discreet and non-intrusive process that captures a facial image with a digital camera and a 10-digit fingerprint scan with a digital finger scanner. Your face must be clearly visible for a photograph to be taken. This means that you cannot:

  • have hair that covers the eyes
  • wear a hat or scarf or any other item that obscures the face, hair or neck (with the exception of religious head coverings detailed below)
  • If you wear a head or neck covering for religious reasons you must ensure your face is clearly visible, from the bottom of your chin to above your eyebrows including both cheeks. If possible both ears should also be displayed. You may also need to remove your glasses when the photograph is taken.

If you have cut or damaged your fingertips, you should make an appointment with the Visa Application Center for Greece when the injury has healed. If you have a temporary decoration, such as mehndi, you should advise the Visa Application Center for Greece when booking your appointment to determine whether a scan will be possible.

If you refuse to submit your biometric data, your visa application cannot be processed and you will be referred to the Embassy of Greece.

Photo Specifications

Before submitting Schengen Visa photos make sure that they are absolutely in a high quality form in order to make their reproduction easy – something needed when facial biometrics applies in the ID Document of the visa holder. The applicants should present two recent (not more than 6 months old) passport-sized photos that should be:

  • 3,5 x 4 cm (approx. 1.2 x 1.6 inch)
  • with a light background (white or off-white) so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background
  • in color and with facing forward
  • with the forehead and ears visible, without heavy jewelry
  • full face, non-smiling (without sunglasses, a hat/ cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religions belief or ethnic background
  • of high quality and printed on normal photographic paper (camera print), preferably not glossy

Please click here for the specifications.

Knowing and meeting properly these requirements is essential, as only if in the needed format, the biometric recognition of the applicant and perfect reproduction can be authorized correctly.

Note: Please follow these instructions carefully. If photographs presented do not meet these requirements, your application will be considered incomplete.

Regulation (EU) No 610/2013 of 26 June 2013, amended the Convention Implementing the Schengen Agreement, the Schengen Borders Code and the Visa Code and – among others – re-defined the concept of "short stay" for third-country nationals in the Schengen area which is a fundamental element of the Schengen acquis.

As from 18 October 2013 for the vast majority of the third-country nationals – irrespective of being visa required or exempt – who intend to travel to the Schengen area for a short stay (contrary to reside in one of the Member States for longer than 3 months) the maximum duration of authorised stay is defined as "90 days in any 180-day period […]". "The date of entry shall be considered as the first day of stay on the territory of the Member States and the date of exit shall be considered as the last day of stay on the territory of the Member States. Periods of stay authorised under a residence permit or a long-stay visa shall not be taken into account in the calculation of the duration of stay on the territory of the Member States."

Contrary to the definition which was in force until 18 October 2013, the new concept is more precise by setting the duration in days, instead of months. Moreover, the term "from the date of first entry" which gave rise to many uncertainties and questions (especially after a judgment of the Court of Justice of the EU from 2006 (Case 241/05 "Bot)) has been dropped from the provision.

The notion of "any", implies the application of a "moving" 180-day reference period, looking backwards at each day of the stay (be it at the entry or at the day of an actual check), into the last 180-day period, in order to verify if the 90 days / 180-day requirement continues to be fulfilled.

Among others, it means that an absence for an uninterrupted period of 90 days allows for a new stay for up to 90 days. Stays in Bulgaria, Croatia, Ireland, Romania, Cyprus and the United Kingdom shall not be taken into account as they are not (yet) part of the Schengen area without internal borders. At the same time, the non-EU Member States Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland belong to the Schengen area; short stays in these countries count in when assessing the compliance with the 90 days / 180-day rule. Please note that the change does not apply to the visa waiver agreements concluded between the EU and Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Mauritius, and Seychelles where the old definition ("3 months during a 6 months period following the date of first entry") continues to apply . For citizens of these 7 third countries the calculator is not recommended to be used.

The length of stay of non-EU citizens traveling with a visa issued in accordance with the visa facilitation agreements concluded by the EU and certain third countries is to be calculated according to the new calculation method as there is reference in these agreements to "90 days per period of 180 days".

INFORMATION SHEET TO VISA HOLDERS

You have been issued a visa for the territories of the Schengen States. As soon as you receive your short-stay visa, make sure that all the information it contains is correct. Check the following:

  • Your passport has a passport number. This number is also indicated on the visa sticker. Make sure that these numbers are the same.
  • You applied for your visa for a specific period or periods. Check that your air ticket corresponds with the entry and exit dates indicated on the visa sticker.
  • Check that the number of days corresponds with the number of travel dates indicated on your visa sticker.
  • Check that your name is spelled correctly.
  • Do this yourself in order to avoid any problems or extra costs arising when using your visa. If you think that the information on the visa is incorrect, tell the consular authority immediately, so that any errors can be corrected.

How to read the visa sticker:

DURATION OF STAY.........DAYS indicates the number of days, you may stay in the Schengen area. The days should be counted from the date you enter the Schengen area (the entry stamp) to the date you exit the Schengen area (the exit stamp), i.e. both days included. The period of time between “FROM ...UNTIL” is usually longer than the number of days printed in the “DURATION OF STAY” field. The difference in period is meant to give you flexibility to plan your entry into and exit from the Schengen area, but your stay in the Schengen area must never exceed the exact number of days in the “DURATION OF STAY ...DAYS” field. No matter how many days you have stayed in the Schengen area, you must leave no later than the date printed in the “UNTIL” field."

Controls at the border

Your short-stay visa allows you to travel to Greece and usually to other Schengen States. But it does not automatically entitle you to enter the Schengen area. So you may have to provide certain information at border or other controls. You may, for instance, have to provide information on your means of support, how long you intend to stay in Greece and in the Schengen area, and why you are visiting. In some cases, such checks may result in a refusal for the visa holder to enter Greece or the Schengen area. It is therefore recommended that you carry with you copies of the documents which you presented when you applied for the visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of your stay). This will help to make the border control procedure easier and avoid delays at the border.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

You must keep to the period of stay allowed by your visa. Misuse and overstay may result in you being expelled and banned from obtaining a new visa for a certain period of time.

The decision to refuse a Schengen visa and the reasons for the refusal are notified using a standard form that is handed out by the Member State's Consulate that refused the visa. The notification of the refusal must include the reasons, on which the refusal was based, and the procedures and deadlines for submitting an appeal.

Applicants who have been refused a visa may appeal against this decision. Appeals shall be conducted against the Member State that has taken the final decision on the application and in accordance with the national law of that Member State. Member States shall provide applicants with information regarding the procedure to be followed in the event of an appeal.

Applicants are free to re-apply if their application has been refused earlier. However, it is recommended to take note of the reasons for the earlier refusal before submitting a new application and make amendments, where necessary.

The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. The visa fee covers the cost of the examination of the visa application.
