2022 DP World Tour Championship leaderboard: Jon Rahm makes his move to hold slim lead over Matt Fitzpatrick

Members of the european ryder cup team will duke it out in the final round for the season-long crown.

dp world tour golf 2022

For the first time all week, a new man occupies the top spot on the leaderboard of the 2022 DP World Tour Championship. Former world No. 1 Jon Rahm was simply brilliant around Jumeirah Golf Estates on Saturday en route to his bogey-free 7-under 65. Carding seven birdies for the second consecutive day, the Spaniard has slowly meandered his way to 15 under and possesses a one-stroke lead over Matt Fitzpatrick.

With four birdies in his opening eight holes, a moment of unease arose on the difficult par-4 ninth. Making bogey on this hole the first two days, Rahm was forced to chip out of trouble before converting a momentum-saving par putt from just inside 15 feet. Adding three birdies on his inward half, Rahm has now positioned himself to become the first man to win the DP World Tour Championship three times.

"I don't think I could have shot any lower today," Rahm said. "Maximized the round. Wasn't my best off the tee but I was able to actually get some birdies out of some not so good situations. I didn't hit any of the fairways on the par fives and still played them three-under par. I'm hoping come tomorrow I can be a little better off the tee, and still keep the good iron play and good putting going."

First-round leader and 36-hole leader Fitzpatrick will be sure to apply some pressure as the Englishman battles for both the DP World Tour Championship and the season-long race. At 14 under, he is in the precarious position of trailing not only Rahm, but also Rory McIlroy as the world No. 1 is projected to win the Harry Vardon Trophy after his round of 7-under 65.

"Something I've learnt massively this year is to be more patient," Fitzpatrick said. "I'm not the best at it. I've got so much better, probably, since being told off by Billy [Foster, his caddie] in April. So I think that's been a big thing that's come on for me is just being patient and knowing that I'm playing some good golf. I feel really comfortable with my irons this week, and that's been a big, big change and a big step forward over the last few months. So, I'm looking forward going into tomorrow.

"It would mean the world [to win the DP World Tour Rankings]. I'm going to need a lot of things go my way," Fitzpatrick added. "I feel like this...could be a third win here, and if it happens, it could be all three times I've not won [the DP World Tour Rankings]."

McIlroy began his second round in a volatile fashion as two bogeys sandwiched an eagle in his first three holes. Making birdie on seven of his final 14 holes, the Northern Irishman has returned to the pole position in the season-long race ahead of the final 18 holes. McIlroy will attempt to join Henrik Stenson as the only men to win both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour season-long titles in the same year.

Round 3 leaderboard, scores

  • 1. Jon Rahm: -15
  • 2. Matt Fitzpatrick: -14
  • 3. Alex Noren: -13
  • T4. Rory McIlroy: -12
  • T4. Tyrrell Hatton: -12
  • T6. Tommy Fleetwood: -10
  • T6. Adrian Meronk: -10
  • 8. Jorge Campillo: -9
  • T9. Maximilian Kieffer: -8
  • T9. Kurt Kitayama: -8

DP World Tour Rankings up in the air heading into final day

Coming into the week, only seven players were able to win the DP World Tour Rankings. Through three rounds, this number has likely whittled down to only two as Fitzpatrick and McIlroy vie for the season-long crown. After commanding the lead the first two days, Fitzpatrick was projected to claim the title, but the four-time major champion has battled back with a vengeance courtesy of rounds of 68-65. Here are the scenarios for each player heading into the pivotal final round.

  • Rory McIlroy : If he wins or finishes ahead of the other six, he wins the season-long race
  • Matt Fitzpatrick : Has to finish in top two and have McIlroy finish worse than seventh

"It's really cool, I've got to this stage in the game over 15 years as a pro, and I'm still trying to do things for the first time," McIlroy said. "I've never won the FedExCup and this tour's rankings in the same year, so it would be really nice. It's been a wonderful year. I've played some really, really great golf and really consistent golf. If I'm able to go out there tomorrow and shoot a good score and get the job done, it would be a really nice way to end what's been a great year."

2022 DP World Tour Championship updated odds and picks

  • Jon Rahm: 11/10
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 14/5
  • Rory McIlroy: 9/2
  • Alex Noren: 9-1
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 12-1

This is reminiscent of the old Tour Championship on the PGA Tour for those unfamiliar with the DP World Tour Rankings. Rahm, Noren and Hatton have no chance to win the season-long crown while Fitzpatrick and McIlroy will shoulder the pressure of trying to claim victory in both the tournament at hand and the DP World Tour Rankings. With these odds applying strictly to the DP World Tour Championship, Rahm looks to be the fairest price and will remain our selection to win.

2022 DP World Tour Schedule

In what is a major rebrand, the European Tour is set to become the DP World Tour when the 2022 season kicks off.

Ahead of what will be the 50th anniversary of Europe's premier circuit, it was announced that DP World had agreed a deal for the tour's naming rights, with a major cash injection to take prize money past the $200 million mark for the first time.

As part of the agreement, there will also be a minimum prize fund of $2m per tournament, sanctioned solely by the DP World Tour.

The aptly named circuit will travel to 27 countries and feature new events in Belgium, Japan, South Africa and the UAE. Of the 47 tournaments, 23 will be held in Europe, with the remaining 24 classified as worldwide events.

Five tournaments will make up the lucrative Rolex Series - the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship, and the DP World Tour Championship - with each boasting a purse of $8m.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy pose with their trophies after the end of the DP World Tour Championship. Rahm claimed the tournament title while McIlroy won the season-long points race.

Andrew Redington

To say Jon Rahm loves playing the DP World Tour Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates would be the understatement of understatements. The 28-year-old Spaniard had two wins and a T-4 showing in his three previous starts in the Old World circuit’s season finale, posting a scoring average of 67.66.

It was more of the same this week, as Rahm followed up an opening-round 70 with a 66-65-67 finish to take the tournament title for a third time, outpacing Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots. In the process, he lowered that career scoring average to 67.5.

It was Rahm’s ninth career DP World Tour victory and fifth win in the tour’s elevated Rolex Series events. With the triumph, Rahm claimed the $3 million first-place prize money payout (€2,891,271) from the overall purse of $10 million. He also saw his career earnings on the DP World Tour rise to €21,834,859.52, the 19th player in tour history to break the €20 million mark.

There was another winner on Sunday as well as Rory McIlroy, while finishing four strokes back of Rahm in solo fourth place, earned the DP World Tour’s Harry Vardon Trophy as the season-long points title winner . It’s the third time McIlroy has won the honor, but the first in a season in which he also won the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title.

T he 2024 Volvo China Open final leaderboard is headed by winner Adrian Otaegui, who topped the DP World Tour leaderboard this week with a win at Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen, China.

Otaegui won on the DP World Tour for the fifth time after winning the 54-hole event by three shots on 18-under 198. The event was shortened to 54 holes with interrupting weather.

Guido Migliozzi finished in solo second on the week, after Otaegui overcame a five-shot final-round deficit to win.

Sebastian Söderberg, Paul Waring and Joel Girrbach finished in a tie for third place, a shot behind Migliozzi.

Otaegui won the €356,293.78 winner's share of the $2,250,000 purse.

Volvo China Open recap notes

Otaegui earned 14.5 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win, with the minimum point schedule removed from the Official World Golf Ranking.

There was a 36-hole cut, with 68 of 156 starting players finishing the event in the 19th completed event of the season.

Otaegui earned 500 Race to Dubai points as a DP World Tour member, with its season-long Race to Dubai points race well underway for 2023-2024. He also earned a spot in the PGA Championship through the DP World Tour points standings.

The 2024 European Tour schedule continues in two weeks with the PGA Championship.

Talor Gooch gets invitation to PGA Championship after LIV success

The PGA of America appeared to detour from its usual practice by inviting a low-ranked player whose recent success has come solely on the Saudi-backed circuit.

dp world tour golf 2022

In an apparent nod to his work on the LIV Golf circuit, Talor Gooch received an invitation to this month’s PGA Championship.

The 32-year-old Oklahoma native, whose Official World Golf Ranking placement was in the 30s when he defected from the PGA Tour in May 2022, has plunged to 644th while with LIV, whose events have yet to be approved for OWGR points. The PGA of America traditionally fills out its PGA Championship field with players ranked in the top 100.

While his ranking plummeted last year, Gooch won three LIV events, finished in the top 12 in six others and garnered an $18 million bonus for winning its individual points race. He thanked the PGA of America for its invitation Monday on social media.

“Looking forward to Valhalla next week!” Gooch wrote , referring to the storied course in Louisville set to host the tournament for a fourth time. “See y’all there.”

Gooch’s 2022 results on the PGA Tour earned him spots last year in the fields of three majors: the Masters, the British Open and the PGA Championship. After the U.S. Golf Association tweaked its qualifying criteria for the U.S. Open in February 2023, Gooch referred to himself in saying it was “obviously disappointing because that changed rule only affected one person,” then fell short of making the U.S. Open field that year when his OWGR mark dropped below the top 60.

While several LIV players have been eligible to play in majors this year because of past success in those events, Gooch — whose best finish in a major was a tie for 14th at the 2022 Masters — has had to rely on his world ranking. That well ran dry in 2023, and Gooch was facing the prospect of not appearing in any major this year until, per his post, the PGA of America took a detour from its usual practice.

The organization is expected to reveal its full field Tuesday, according to the Associated Press . Another LIV golfer, Joaquin Niemann, said in March that he had received a special invitation to the PGA Championship.

Assuming that’s the case, it will be the second straight major in which Niemann participates via invitation, after Masters officials included him in their field last month. Niemann, who was ranked in the teens when he left the PGA Tour, had taken strides to keep his world ranking (currently 91st) from falling off a cliff. In addition to playing LIV events, the 25-year-old Chilean competed in several tournaments on the Asian and European tours, where his four top-five finishes included a win at the Australian Open in December.

LIV Golf’s David Puig, who joined the circuit in 2022 after starring at Arizona State, has taken a similar approach. By bolstering his résumé with several top-10 finishes on the Asian Tour over the past year, the young Spaniard has climbed the OWGR to a perch just outside the top 100, and he reportedly also received a PGA Championship invitation.

Since joining LIV, Gooch has played just two events that weren’t on that circuit or were a major, and he didn’t have a good result in either. He answered a question last week about potentially playing in qualifying events for the U.S. Open and British Open by bluntly indicating he had no intention of doing so.

Gooch sparked derision in golf circles earlier this year when he was quoted as saying of the 2024 Masters — to which he was not invited — “If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his [career] Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.” The Masters field ended up including 13 other LIV players, raising questions about whether Gooch’s criterion for “the best players in the world” was a field with him in it.

As such, Gooch could find himself feeling an extra dose of pressure to perform well at the PGA Championship, which tees off next week. A one-time winner on the PGA Tour, he is coming off a fourth-place finish at a LIV event in Singapore.

Of his record 46 PGA TOUR Champions victories, four have come at the Insperity Invitational (2007, 2008, 2014 and 2018). In addition to Langer, six other World Golf Hall of Fame members will be teeing it up, including Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Mark O’Meara and Vijay Singh.

Steven Alker, the 2022 and 2023 champion, returns in his bid for a third straight title. The New Zealand native, who was tied for the lead in 2023 after Round 1 and led by three after the second, closed with his third consecutive round in the 60s for a 15-under total and a four-shot victory over Steve Stricker. No one else came within seven shots.

LIV’s Talor Gooch receives special invitation to PGA Championship

For the first time since the onset of the PGA Tour-LIV Golf divide, a LIV golfer has been awarded a position in a major championship due primarily to his performance on the 54-hole team-format tour.

Talor Gooch, who joined the Saudi-backed Tour in May 2022, announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the PGA of America has extended a special invitation to compete in next week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. The PGA of America also extended an invitation to LIV’s David Puig, the 22-year-old Arizona State product who recently won the Malaysian Open and qualified for the Open Championship.

Looking forward to Valhalla next week! Thank you for the invitation @PGA 🙏🏼 See y'all there. pic.twitter.com/0Rcm652KMP — Talor Gooch (@TalorGooch) May 6, 2024

“Looking forward to Valhalla next week!” Gooch wrote on X. “Thank you for the invitation PGA. See ya’ll there.”

The PGA of America (the governing body of the PGA Championship) traditionally invites the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 100 players to compete at the PGA. Gooch is currently ranked No. 644, while Puig is No. 106. LIV Golf tournaments are not recognized in the ranking system, and Gooch only teed it up in only six OWGR-official events since joining LIV. However, after leaving the PGA Tour , Gooch won three times on LIV and finished as the league’s 2023 individual champion. His sole PGA Tour victory came at the 2021 RSM Classic, six months before joining the upstart league.

LIV’s Joaquin Niemann notably received a special invitation to the Masters last month, but the Chilean intentionally traveled around the world to play in tournaments outside of LIV Golf and earn his place in the majors. Niemann won the Australian Open in December and placed in the top five in three DP World Tour events. Gooch, however, has not made the same effort. He played in the Hong Kong Open in November and the Saudi International last winter, but other than those two starts, the 32-year-old has not played outside of LIV. Gooch’s invitation to the PGA Championship indicates that the tournament’s organizers recognize his performance on the Saudi-backed tour.

Gooch has been especially outspoken about his exclusion from major championships. He was eligible for the Masters, the PGA Championship and the Open Championship last season due to his PGA Tour performance before joining LIV. But the USGA changed its eligibility rules and Gooch could not tee it up at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023 for the U.S. Open.

In a news conference last week in Singapore, Gooch announced that he would not attempt to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Open, despite 35 LIV players trying their hand at final qualifying in the coming weeks.

“I’m not,” Gooch said when asked if he would be qualifying. He did not offer further explanation.

Gooch also garnered attention when he said that if Rory McIlroy were to have completed the career grand slam at the Masters, the accolade would have needed an “asterisk” due to the absence of LIV players from the field. Yet 13 LIV golfers teed it up at Augusta this year.

The full PGA Championship field list has not been released. Brooks Koepka, the defending champion, is a LIV member and hoisted the individual trophy at LIV Singapore last week.
