Ratings and Reviews

Buggy since 8 release.

I love 1Password and have used it for years both personally and professionally. However, since the 8 release, there’s been a handful of bugs that have been a bit irritating. Initially the lack of Apple Watch integration off the bat was a bit frustrating, thankfully they sort of fixed that but still has random flaws where the OTP doesn’t update consistently. Another issue I’ve been running into more recently on the phone app, if I switch from one app to another and then back to 1PW, it will open a random password file (not the one I was copying data from) as if I clicked “edit”… what’s scary is I don’t know if changes have been made to the password or not… I’ve been clicking “discard changes” just in case to get rid of it but this is frustrating because I haven’t tried to open any other files. This is treatable every time and it’s always a different file. 1PW, please resolve this one as it has the potential to create altered passwords that aren’t correct and could wreak havoc on shared passwords between team members. Great password manager and customer service

This is an excellent password manager. I’ve pretty much used all the major / popular ones and this one honestly makes me feel the most secure and actually seems to work best across devices. An example of that is when you update your password on one device it instantly is updated on all of them. I know that sounds basic but lastpass, Microsoft and apple password managers always seem to have a problem actually doing this which leads to a lot of frustration. It’s also just the best if you use lots of browsers and different types of devices since obviously apple and MS don’t exactly play well together. I had issues with Face ID not working previously as I’m sure many others experienced. 1Password customer service did everything they could to ensure i was a happy. They listened to and acknowledged the issue helped me with a workaround while they worked on an update for their app. They followed up afterwards on multiple occasions. really just took care of me at every level I’m impressed by their customer service and technical support. I highly recommend this app and company.

Stop trying to get me to share my info with you, 1Password!

Generally, I’ve been happy with 1Password. However, recently, it seems every time I log into it, it tries to get me to share my information with it about my family account “for product improvement reasons.” In the dialog box, the option is to accept the sharing is on by default. But when I deselect it and dismiss the dialog box by selecting “Confirm Choices,” the app just asks me again the next time I log in. I DON’T WANT TO SHARE. Let it go, 1Password. It’s creepy. While you promise not to look at the passwords, the implication is that you can see the sites we use and the name of our items. No thanks. Additionally, the desktop app also wants to have full accessibility access on the Mac. This is a bit disconcerting and confusing when the browser plugin does just fine without it). Since I don’t want or need 1Password to fill passwords outside the browser, it’s annoying. Also, 1Password 8 is only available for direct download on the Mac, and I don’t want that—for security reasons I prefer to download (and update) via the App Store.

Big 1Password update for iOS and Mac brings over 100 improvements and changes

1Password is out with a major update for iOS and Mac (Android, PC, and Linux too). The new release brings over 100 new features, improvements, and bug fixes including the ability to reorder fields and sections inside items, keyboard shortcuts, improved search, Continuity and Handoff support for Apple devices, and much more.

1Password detailed all the changes on its blog for version 8.10.0. The company says the latest features and changes were inspired by user feedback and it’s an impressively long list of new improvements and fixes.

First up with 1Password for iOS , here are some of the top changes in 8.10.0:

• We’ve improved Face ID and Touch ID unlock for 1Password 8 for iOS and Safari.
• You can now search a list of items by swiping down in the list and using the search field. 
• You can now reorder fields and sections inside items.
• We’ve added keyboard shortcuts to the app!
• Press and hold the Command key to see the available shortcuts. 
• You can now edit and delete vaults by opening the vault and tapping the overflow menu button. 
• Searching for items now displays the full list of results. It may take a few moments for all results to appear. 
• We’ve added support for MDM-managed preference keys. 
• We’ve added support for Continuity and Handoff of items between Apple devices.

• You can now reorder sections and fields when editing an item.
• We’ve made some speed improvements to 1Password Unencrypted Export (1PUX), so it’ll only compress necessary files during the export.

• When you show the search results for a query with no matching items, the sort button will now be hidden. 
• We’ve fixed an issue that could cause extra whitespace to be shown at the bottom of secure notes.

• Title labels for  “Sign in with”  providers in Login items are now properly aligned. 
• One-time password notifications are now classified as Time Sensitive. 
• You can now use your arrow keys and the Return key to navigate through item lists and select items. 
• You can now tap on the version number in Settings > About to copy the version details to your clipboard. 
• The option to configure the amount of time before you must reauthorize the 1Password extension in Safari on iOS is now disabled if Face ID or Touch ID aren’t turned on. 
• We’ve improved the visual appearance of the navigation bar in landscape mode on your iPhone. 
• We’ve fixed an issue that could prevent you from using Face ID or Touch ID to unlock 1Password. 
• We’ve fixed a crash that could occur when reopening 1Password after closing the app. 
• We’ve fixed an issue that could cause Watchtower cards to disappear when switching from portrait to landscape mode on an iPhone.

1Password has risen to the top of the premium password management ranks over the years with its solid user experience, full feature list, and competitive pricing. At just $35.88 annually for an individual plan, 1Password provides everything you need in a secure password manager, from core functions like autofill across unlimited devices to premium security monitoring and passkey support. 

1Password doesn’t offer a free tier like its competitors, but most of those no-cost plans come with fewer features and/or restrictions that make them difficult to use (the exceptions being Bitwarden and NordPass). Plus, 1Password has unique features like Travel Mode that lets you temporarily hide logins from prying eyes at international borders as well as the ability to restore recently deleted records. 

Finally, 1Password offers cross-platform support for its apps and extensions, making it a solid choice for Apple, Windows and Linux users alike. Our 1Password review will help you decide if this is the best password manager for you or if you’d be better off looking elsewhere.

1Password review: Costs and what's covered

1Password costs $35.88 per year for a single user and $59.88 per year for a family of up to five, and you can add additional users to the family for $1 per person per month. Unlike some of its competitors, 1Password has no free version, but it does offer a 14-day trial to new users. 

With a 1Password individual plan, you get unlimited password syncing across an unlimited number of devices, two-factor authentication, 1GB of document storage, 30-day storage of recently deleted passwords, premium support and security monitoring and alerts. The family plan includes sharing functions and account recovery for connected users who are locked out of their vaults. 

On desktop, 1Password supports macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, 64-bit versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11, Chrome OS and several Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise, openSUSE, Arch and CentOS. There's even a command-line interface for Windows, Mac, Linux and the Unix derivatives FreeBSD and OpenBSD.

Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Firefox and Edge on Windows, Mac and Linux, plus Brave on Windows and Mac and Safari on Mac. Opera, Vivaldi and other Chromium-based browsers can use the Chrome app. The iOS mobile app requires iOS 15.5 or later, while the Android app supports Android 9.0 and later. Finally, you can always access your vault on the web. 

I tested 1Password 8 on a 2020 MacBook Air running macOS 12.7.1 Monterey, an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 17.1.1 and Google Chrome . 

1Password review: Setup

[1Password Create Account]

To get started with 1Password, you first need to create an account at 1Password.com. You'll have to verify your email address and create a strong master password for accessing your vault. 

During the setup process, 1Password will also generate your Emergency Kit. This is a PDF containing your vault address, email address, Secret Key (more on that below) and a place to write down your master password.

Your Emergency Kit ensures you (or someone you trust) always has the necessary information to access your 1Password account, so you should print it out and securely store at least one copy. If you need to access the Emergency Kit later, you can find it in your account profile or settings, depending on which device you're using.

Note that you can change your master password or regenerate your Secret Key —you’ll just want to be sure you update your Emergency Kit to reflect this new information. When I initially set up my account, my master password contained symbols not found on a mobile keyboard, making it impossible to type my password in to unlock the app. 

Next, download the desktop and mobile apps. You can use 1Password solely via the web vault and a browser extension, but the desktop app has biometric unlocking so you won't have to enter your master password every time you want to access your vault.

The app setup process is a little bit different depending on your device and operating system, but you'll find all app options and steps in your web vault by clicking your profile icon in the upper-right corner and clicking Get the Apps. Pairing devices is especially easy if you scan your setup (QR) code, which you'll find in your web vault or your Emergency Kit.

Once you've entered your master password on the desktop or mobile app, you can enable supported biometrics like Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello or face, fingerprint, or iris unlock (as well as auto-unlock using Apple Watch ). On mobile, go to Settings > Security and select your biometric option. On Windows, settings are found under 1Password > Settings > Security and on macOS under 1Password > Settings > Security. You can also select how often you want the app to require your password to re-up biometric access.

Finally, grab the relevant 1Password browser extensions for quick access to your vault as well as autofill, saving and updating logins, password generation and more features in your browser.

Importing passwords works on either the web vault or the desktop app (found by tapping your name icon in the web vault or File > Import on desktop). 1Password supports imports from a handful of other password managers as well as CSV files. There are more specific import options on the web than on the desktop.

1Password review: Desktop

1Password's interface has some minor differences between the web vault and the desktop app, but the basic navigation is similar enough. There's a left-justified menu bar for toggling between different collapsible sections of your vault. On the web, this includes favorited items, record categories and tags, as well as your archive, which holds onto removed records until you permanently delete them. 

The desktop app has a category drop-down instead of listing them on the menu bar. 

When you click on a record, you can view, copy or open-and-fill the credentials. There's an edit button either in the top or bottom toolbar. To add a record, tap the plus button. 1Password has a long list of pre-built templates, including ones for passports, medical records, rewards programs and outdoor licenses such as for hunting and fishing.

The menu bar is also where you'll find Watchtower, 1Password's set of security-monitoring tools. This includes lists of your weak and reused passwords; unsecured websites (logins that are connected to http:// pages that don't use encryption); compromised or breached websites; and logins in your vault that have two-factor authentication or passkeys available that aren’t yet enabled.

You can set up 2FA for these accounts right from your 1Password vault when in the desktop app. Interestingly, I got different data about my reused and weak passwords between my web and desktop vaults.

1Password offers the option to create multiple vaults in your individual account so you can organize or share records around specific purposes or projects. For example, you could create a vault with estate-planning documents to share with a partner or spouse, or a vault specific to your social-media accounts. You always have the option to view all your vaults at once or to toggle between them.

1Password also has Psst!, a secure data-sharing service that lets you send someone who isn't a 1Password subscriber a temporary link to view data saved in your 1Password account.

So, for example, if you wanted to send your Netflix password to your brother -in-law, you could send him a link that expires after 1 day and displays the password. Links can expire after as little as one view, or last up to 30 days.

You can also create a vault specifically for trips abroad and enable a unique 1Password feature: Travel Mode. This tool hides the vaults you wouldn't want customs and border control agents to see while still allowing you to access vaults you deem safe.

The Travel Mode option can be toggled on in the web vault at 1Password.com under Profile > Manage my Private vault and toggled off once you return home.

The 1Password browser extensions have most of the features you could need: You can view your entire vault, search for records, generate and autofill passwords (just tap the plus icon) and add, view and edit items. For seamless functionality, including biometric unlock, 1Password extensions require you to run the most up-to-date version of your browser — an important security measure but one that requires frequent restarts on Chrome.

To use autofill, tap the 1Password icon in any form field and select the login you want to use. 1Password will also automatically suggest generated passwords when creating new accounts with a button to save the credential to your vault.

There's also 1Password Quick Access for Mac, Windows, and Linux, which is part of the desktop app and can be accessed via the icon in your main taskbar. This replaces the 1Password mini in previous versions and allows you to find, view, and autofill items without leaving your current app window. In order to enable the full functionality, you may need to adjust your systems’ accessibility features.

As part of a deal with webmail provider Fastmail, 1Password also offers "masked" email addresses that let you generate random Fastmail addresses when signing up for a new online service. The catch is that you have to pay for a Fastmail account, which starts at $3 per month or $36 per year (though you do get a 30-day free trial). 1Password also supports Privacy Cards, merchant-specific, single-use virtual payment cards for shopping online. You have to create and link your Privacy account, but there’s a free plan for up to 12 cards per month.

Finally, 1Password has a long list of keyboard shortcuts for its apps and extensions for faster access to features and functions.

1Password review: Mobile apps

1Password's mobile apps have been updated to include more features, including full Watchtower reports, to better reflect the desktop experience. Plus, they’re more intuitive to navigate than in previous iterations.

The main toolbar lets you toggle between your home screen — which you can customize to show tiles for your favorite or most recently or frequently used logins — as well as categories, search, and Watchtower. You can manually add records from any screen using the plus icon, and you can sort your item list by title as well as date modified, created or used.

Under Settings, now found by tapping your profile icon, you'll find options for security features like biometrics and passcodes, auto-lock timers and Watchtower functions.

You can toggle on autofill in Settings, but as with most other password-manager apps, you’ll also have to enable autofill in your phone settings. You can select 1Password as the default if you have multiple password managers plus your phone’s keychain.

Once enabled, 1Password will fill and save logins in browsers and apps from your keyboard. When login info is required, 1Password will either suggest a login (upon unlock) or launch for you to select one. It will also give you the option to create and fill a new username and password. On iOS, 1Password also has a Safari extension, though the autofill function seems smoother.

One feature I miss on the 1Password app is a password generator . This function pops up when you create or edit an existing record, but there’s no standalone tool as offered by competitor apps from Dashlane and NordPass .

1Password review: Security

Like most of its major competitors, 1Password uses AES-256 encryption to secure your data on your devices and on its servers. Only you can unlock your vault locally using your master password.

1Password adds an extra layer of security with your 34-character Secret Key, which is created and stored locally on your device and prevents hackers from accessing your data outside of your computer, tablet or phone. You do not need to remember or enter your Secret Key to get into your password vault, but you can (and should) save it in your Emergency Kit. 

1Password is also SOC 2 Type 2 certified by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) to securely manage consumer data and ensure privacy. 

Two-factor authentication on 1Password is available using an authenticator app such as Authy, Microsoft Authenticator and Okta Verify or with a U2F hardware key like YubiKey or Google Titan. 

Finally, 1Password supports a handful of biometrics for unlocking your vault, including Face ID on iOS, Touch ID on iOS and macOS, Windows Hello, Linux biometrics and fingerprint, face and iris unlock on Android. You can also log into your macOS desktop app using an Apple Watch .

1Password review: Passkeys

1Password currently supports creating, saving, and signing in with passkeys through the 1Password desktop app on Mac and Windows as well as across mobile devices running iOS 17. You can view, manage and share saved passkeys on Android. Watchtower will also identify existing accounts that can be secured with a passkey and link you to create one through the desktop and mobile apps. 

Unlike passwords, which can be compromised fairly easily through data breaches, passkeys aren’t stored anywhere for malevolent actors to access. Instead, there is a credential stored on your device that nobody can access. This is called a private key.

When you need to log into a site or application, the site will use a public key to request that you authenticate this private key, typically using biometric authentication like FaceID. Once authenticated, you are able to log into the site or application just like if you had a password.

As of November 2023, the ability to unlock 1Password with a passkey — rather than managing your master password and Secret Key — is available only as a private beta for iOS users. 

1Password review: Bottom line 

1Password is a top-notch password manager that is secure, easy and intuitive to use, and priced competitively. It functions consistently across web, desktop and mobile with all the features you’d expect—including more advanced passkey support than its competitors—as well as standouts like comprehensive security monitoring with Watchtower and a Travel Mode. 

Unlike with Keeper , you don’t need to pay for add-ons to get these features, and 1Password users aren’t charged a premium for access to VPN services a la Dashlane. Your $35 per year gets you everything 1Password has to offer. 

1Password doesn’t offer any type of free plan, so if you’re looking for no-cost options, Bitwarden or NordPass may be worth considering. But we can highly recommend 1Password among paid premium options.

Save your passwords

To save a login, enter your username and password. Then choose Save in 1Password .

You can edit the title of the login and the vault where you want to save it. Then click Save .

To update an incorrect or incomplete login, make your changes, then choose Save in 1Password and click Update .

Fill logins and other items

To fill an item, choose it from below the username or password field.

If 1Password suggests more than one item, you can use the arrow keys to select the one you want, or start typing to filter your items.

Sign in to sites with a passkey

To save a passkey, find a passkey-supported website. Depending on the website, you may need to create an account with a username and password before you can create a passkey.

When you choose the option to create a passkey, 1Password will offer to save it. If you have an existing Login item for the website saved in 1Password, you can choose to update it by adding the passkey. Or you can save the passkey as a new item.

The next time you visit the sign-in page for that website and choose the option to sign in with a passkey, 1Password will show you a list of your saved passkeys. Click Sign in beside the one you want to use.

Sign in to sites with a provider

To save a login for a site where you want to sign in with a supported sign-in provider, like Google or Facebook, sign in to the website with the provider you want to use, then click Save item .

Choose where you want to save the item, select the login for the provider you signed in with, then click Save .

The next time you visit the sign-in page for that website, 1Password will offer to sign you in to the site with the provider you saved in the item. Click Sign in next to the provider you want to sign in with.

Use a suggested password

1Password suggests strong passwords when you’re changing a password or signing up for a new account.

Create a custom password

Adjust the settings for your new password, then copy it to the clipboard or fill it on the page.

To see all the passwords you’ve created, click Password Generator History below the password generator.

Search 1Password

Searching is the fastest way to find what you need in 1Password.

To search in 1Password, open the pop-up and start typing.

To cancel the current search, click or press Esc.

View and edit items

To view an item’s details, click it. Or use the arrow keys to select it.

To mark an item as a favorite, click and choose Add to Favorites .

To copy any field, click it.

To open the pop-up in a new window*, click and choose Open in New Window .

To edit an item, click and choose Edit . The item will open in a new tab where you can add tags or custom fields , move it , archive it, or delete it.

Use drag and drop to fill in apps

To fill in an app, drag your login details from 1Password to it. For example, drag your password to the password field in the app.

You can also use drag and drop in your browser. Fill answers to security questions, membership numbers, and more.

Fill one-time passwords

You can use 1Password as an authenticator for a site that supports two-factor authentication. First, find the site on 2fa.directory and follow the instructions to turn on two-factor authentication for the site.

Click > Scan QR Code to save it to your 1Password item. 1Password can then fill your one-time passwords any time you need to sign in to that site.

Switch accounts

To see everything, click All Accounts . To see only the items for a specific account, click All Vaults under the name of the account you want.

Use Watchtower

Watchtower tells you about password breaches and other security problems on the websites you have saved in 1Password.

If any of your items require action, you’ll see an alert banner with more information at the top of the item in 1Password.

Share items

You can securely share copies of passwords and other items you’ve saved in 1Password with anyone, even if they don’t use 1Password.

To share an item, open the pop-up, find the item you want to share, and select it. Click and choose Share .

You can choose when the link expires and who to share it with. Then click Get Link to Share . Click Copy , then send the link to the person or people you want to share the item with, like in an email or text message.

If you already have passwords and other information saved in your browser’s built-in password manager, learn how to move your data into 1Password from Chrome , Firefox , Edge , Brave , or Safari .

If you’re using a different browser, you might be able to export your passwords and other information using the comma-separated values (CSV) file format. To learn how to export to a CSV file, check the documentation for your browser. Then move your data into your account on 1Password.com .

If your browser’s built-in password manager is interfering with 1Password

If your browser’s built-in password manager is interfering with 1Password, you can turn it off:

• Select General , then make sure Make 1Password the default password manager in this browser is turned on.

If you use different passwords for additional 1Password accounts

When you unlock 1Password in your browser, only accounts using the same password are unlocked. To unlock an account that has a different password, lock 1Password, then unlock it using the password for that account.

To make sure you always have access to your 1Password accounts, use the same password for all of them . If you signed up for accounts with different passwords, you can change them .

Apple has issued iOS 17.5 along with a warning to update your iPhone as soon as possible. That’s because iOS 17.5 fixes 15 security vulnerabilities, some of which are serious.

Apple remains tight-lipped about exactly what is fixed in iOS 17.5, to ensure as many people as possible are able to upgrade their iPhones before attackers can get hold of the details.

Among the important flaws patched in iOS 17.5 are an issue in the Kernel at the heart of the iPhone operating system tracked as CVE-2024-27818, which could allow an attacker to execute code. Another issue fixed in iOS 17.5, in AppleAVD, could see an adversary able to execute arbitrary code with Kernel privileges if a user downloads an app, Apple said on its support page .

Apple has issued iOS 17.5 along with a warning to update your iPhone as soon as possible.

Another significant bug squashed in iOS 17.5 is a vulnerability in Voice Control that could allow an attacker to elevate privileges. Meanwhile, CVE-2024-27834 is a flaw in WebKit, the engine that underpins the Safari browser, which could allow an attacker to bypass Pointer Authentication.

An issue in MarketplaceKit tracked as CVE-2024-27852 and reported by researchers at security outfit Mysk could see a maliciously crafted webpage able to distribute a script that tracks users on other webpages.

Sean Wright, head of application security at Featurespace, calls the fixes issued in iOS 17.5 “a mixed bag.”

The worst is the kernel flaw, he says. “This could be chained with some of the other vulnerabilities to allow an attacker to gain full access to the device.”

POC for iOS 17.5 Kernel Flaw Will Soon Be Ready

One day after iOS 17.5 was issued, more is being unveiled about the security fixes. Notably, a security researcher Meysam who claims to have reported the kernel vulnerability has described in a post on X, formally Twitter, how he reported the flaw in iOS 17.4.1—the previous version of iOS 17. He plans to publish a proof of concept to demonstrate how it works “soon.”

While he is keen to point out that this is not an exploit—ie a direct method of exploiting the issue—it does make updating to iOS 17.5 especially crucial. The more attackers know about the flaw, the more likely it is they can use it in attacks.

Apple Issues iOS 16.7.8 To Fix Already-Exploited Issue

Alongside iOS 17.5, Apple has issued iOS 16.7.8, fixing two issues, one of which is already being used in real-life attacks. Tracked as CVE-2024-23296, the flaw in RTKit could enable an attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability to bypass kernel memory protections. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited,” Apple wrote on its support page .

The iOS 16.7.8 is available for iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad 5th generation, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation.

Why You Should Update Now To iOS 17.5 Or iOS 16.7.8

It’s been a while since Apple’s last security update, iOS 17.4.1 —released in March—which fixed multiple serious security flaws. The update before that, iOS 17.4, was an emergency patch for issues being used in real life attacks.

The iOS 16.7.8 update is similar as it also patches already-exploited security issues. If you have an older device, updating to iOS 16.7.8 is a no-brainer, given that the flaw is being used in attacks.

While iOS 17.5 doesn’t cover any already-exploited flaws—at least that we know about—some of the issues are serious making it important you update your iPhone as soon as you can.

At the same time, the iOS 17.5 update contains cool new features, including unwanted tracker protection, as well as bug fixes.

The iOS 17.5 update is available for the iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

Two days after iOS 17.5 was released, some users are complaining about a Photos bug that is seeing deleted photos from years ago reappearing on people’s iPhones. This bug is certainly concerning, but it’s likely it will be fixed soon by Apple. I haven’t had any issues since updating to iOS 17.5.

If you care about your security, you will need to apply iOS 17.5 or iOS 16.7.8 manually, because Apple’s automatic updates can take a while to reach iPhones. It’s during this time that your device remains open to attack.

Wright says there is no need to panic, but ensure that you update “as soon as you can.”

So what are you waiting for? Go to your iPhone’s Settings > General > Software Update and download and install iOS 17.5 or iOS 16.7.8 now.

05/14 update: As well as important security fixes, the iOS 17.5 update contains a feature that helps stop unwanted tracking across platforms. Building on Apple’s iPhone feature to detect AirTags that might have been slipped into a bag or placed in a vehicle, the unwanted tracking tool in iOS 17.5 is a result of a partnership between Apple and its rival Google.

After releasing iOS 17.5, Apple has issued a press release to confirm the anti-tracking features are live. It describes how Apple and Google worked together to create an industry specification—Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers—for Bluetooth tracking devices. “This will help mitigate the misuse of devices designed to help keep track of belongings,” the statement reads, adding that Apple is implementing this capability in iOS 17.5, and Google in its Android 6.0+ devices.

The iOS 17.5 feature means users will get an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert if an unknown Bluetooth tracking device is detected.

It works across platforms, with Bluetooth tag manufacturers including Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola and Pebblebee saying future tags will be compatible.

Among the benefits, it offers instructions and best practices for manufacturers, “should they choose to build unwanted tracking alert capabilities into their products,” according to Apple and Google.

The standard is ongoing: Apple and Google are working with the Internet Engineering Task Force via the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers working group to develop the official standard.

Apple's Big iMessage and Texting Update Needs to Happen Before iOS 18 Launch

Commentary: Apple traditionally waits for an iPhone launch to roll out splashy new features. But there are multiple reasons why adopting the RCS texting standard shouldn't wait.

Apple plans to support RCS texting sometime this year, but there's good reason for the company to expedite this.

Apple's Messages app and iMessage texting service are among the targets of the US Department of Justice's lawsuit filed in March. The DOJ and 16 state attorneys general claim that Apple is using its dominance in the US mobile industry to stifle competition. 

Despite the suit's scrutiny on iMessage, Apple already announced plans to bring RCS -- a much more modern messaging protocol with updated features -- to the iPhone this year. Doing so represents a major step toward bridging the divide between Android and iOS when it comes to the cross-platform messaging experience, since it would support features like typing indicators, higher quality media sharing and message encryption.

But until Apple starts delivering these features, Apple's Messages app remains a big target for both the US government and other private companies like Beeper trying to make their own texting services compatible with iMessage.

Apple usually waits until it launches the next version of iOS in the fall to introduce new cross-compatible features. For instance, Apple added the ability to create web-based links for FaceTime calls with iOS 15, enabling Windows and Android users to join. That suggests we may not hear about Apple's progress in bringing RCS to the iPhone until June's WWDC developer conference , followed by a potential rollout in the fall.

But with all the mounting pressure, Apple can't afford to wait.

Government scrutiny is already pushing iOS open

Before the lawsuit, the EU was already pressuring Apple to open up certain aspects of its iOS operating system.

To comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act , Apple must allow for alternate app stores and digital payment methods on the iPhone. It also has to provide a prompt that informs users they can set a different default web browser besides Apple's Safari. While these changes are EU-only, the regulations did lead to Apple switching to USB-C for all iPhone 15 models sold internationally. 

Apple evaded these regulations on iMessage in the EU, possibly because third-party chat apps like WhatsApp have higher adoption internationally. But with additional scrutiny from the US government, Apple may have to provide greater transparency into how its messaging service operates and that it isn't actively hindering competition. 

By expediting RCS support, Apple could shift focus away from the currently limited texting experience between iPhone and Android and instead show how it's working to change that. 

Beeper tried to bring iMessage to Android but was shut out by Apple.

Beeper, Nothing and others keep trying to jump into iMessage

Apple should speed up its RCS adoption to circumvent external attempts to provide an "iMessage for Android."

While both Beeper Mini and Nothing Chats made headlines for trying to bring iMessage access to Android, both relied on loopholes in Apple's service. In some cases, you needed to entrust your Apple ID and password to a third party, which could potentially raise privacy concerns.

Other services like Blue Bubbles used an always-on Mac paired up with software to route iMessage texts to an Android device, but even these self-hosted options have their own security risks (along with the logistical issues like losing access if your Mac lost power). 

Apple actively shut down Beeper's access to iMessage last year, but services keep arriving to satisfy a desire among Android users who want to text their iPhone friends with modern features like typing indicators and better group chat support. By hurrying up on RCS, Apple could divert people from seeking out these services and deal with fewer security threats on its iMessage network in turn. 

Apple does have some of its apps link to other services, like the Phone app.

Apple could borrow Beeper's new plan to open up Messages

In addition to speeding up its RCS efforts, Apple could borrow Beeper's strategy to make the Messages app a hub for other texting apps. 

The new Beeper app, currently in beta, will be a center for non-Apple texting services. Texts from WhatsApp, Signal and even Slack would reportedly arrive into the one app  and retain their encryption. I haven't tested the Beeper beta yet, but was an active Trillian user that brought together the instant messaging apps I used as a teenager (AIM, MSN and Yahoo messengers).

Apple already does this to an extent. Apple's Phone app displays calls from multiple services, so if you want to launch a video call with a WhatsApp friend, you can do so from the Recents list.

Apple would not have to display texts from other services within Messages. A simple Messages app notification would suffice, and an indicator that the conversation is on WhatsApp -- which if you tap would move you to the appropriate app. 

When we should actually expect RCS

As much as I would like to see RCS on the iPhone now, the reality is that Apple will likely stick to its traditional product timelines. We might see details and an early beta version of RCS at WWDC in June. If that is the case, a public launch would likely come this fall as part of iOS 18 and the heavily rumored iPhone 16 series .

Apple Releases iOS 17.5 With Cross-Platform Tracking Detection, EU App Downloads From Websites and More

Apple today released iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5, major updates to the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating system updates that came out last September. The 17.5 updates come more than two months after the launch of iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 .

In the European Union, iOS 17.5 brings support for web-based app distribution. iPhone users can download apps directly from developer websites, without the need to use the App Store .

There are new features for Apple News +, such as an offline mode, and tracking notifications are now available cross-platform for alerts about Bluetooth trackers regardless of platform. Apple's full release notes:

Apple News - Offline mode in Apple News+ gives you access to the Today feed and News+ tab, even when you don't have an internet connection - Quartiles is a new and original daily word game that is now available in Apple News+ - Scoreboard in News+ Puzzles gives you access to new player data for Crossword, Mini Crossword and Quartiles, including stats and streaks Tracking Notifications - Cross-Platform Tracking Detection delivers notifications to users if a compatible Bluetooth tracker they do not own is moving with them, regardless of what operating system the device is paired with Some features may not be available for all regions or on all Apple devices.
