News of a new Terrence Malick movie inspires a fervor among cinephiles like few others, in part because they used to be so rare: Malick made just five films between 1973 and 2011. He’s about to release his third since then, and The Film Stage has quite the rundown of its origins. “ Voyage of Time ” will soon screen at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals before coming to IMAX in October, which means there’s still plenty of time to obsess over the making of this nonfiction companion to “The Tree of Life” about the birth of the stars and the future of mankind.

The film will screen in two different formats: “Life’s Journey” is 90 minutes long and narrated by Cate Blanchett, while “The IMAX Experience” clocks in at 40 minutes and will be accompanied by the dulcet tones of Brad Pitt. The former’s voiceover is said to be “more searching and poignant, an urgent inquiry from a child of earth to the mother of all”; the latter is described as “more awestruck and explanatory.” Neither sounds likely to change many viewers’ minds about Malick, whose lyrical approach has only proven more divisive in recent years.

The filmmaker apparently started the process by reaching out to producers Sarah Green and Nick Gonda, not with a script but with two ruminative quotations:

“Is no one inspired by our present picture of the universe? Our poets do not write about it; our artists do not try to portray this remarkable thing. The value of science remains unsung by singers: you are reduced to hearing not a song or poem, but an evening lecture about it. This is not yet a scientific age.” —Richard Feynman “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead — his eyes are closed.” —Albert Einstein

Terrence Malick finally embarks on Voyage of Time – twice

The long-awaited mystical documentary is to have two versions, with a short Imax work narrated by Brad Pitt and a feature-length edition with Cate Blanchett

Terrence Malick’s epic documentary Voyage of Time is to be released in two versions for Imax and traditional cinemas, each featuring different narration from Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.

The long-mooted companion piece to the reclusive film-maker’s 2011 Palme D’Or winner The Tree of Life has been in conception for at least seven years. Once described by Malick as “one of my greatest dreams”, it was tipped to feature scenes of the birth of the universe originally intended for the earlier film, but was later retooled as a standalone project.

Malick initially hoped to shoot in Hawaii, Iceland, Papua New Guinea and Chile, with the Academy Award-winning special effects artist Douglas Trumbull proposed to once again deliver the non-CGI special effects techniques that gave The Tree of Life its distinctive look. However, the film appeared to hit difficulties: Trumbull later told the Playlist he had never truly been involved in the project, while Malick proceeded to busy himself with 2012’s To the Wonder and upcoming Berlin film festival debut Knight of Cups .

In 2013, the film-maker was taken to court by investors who claimed he had “forgotten” to make Voyage of Time and used finance provided by them to complete other projects. The case was settled in February 2014 with Malick’s production company, Sycamore, promising to hand over funds within nine months in order for the suit to be dropped.

The film looks to be back on production slate. A press release describes Voyage of Time as a “celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse”. It continues: “This film examines all that occurred to prepare the world that stands before us now: science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet.” Malick will first create a 40-minute Imax version with narration by Brad Pitt, following with with a 35mm feature-length edition that will be narrated by Cate Blanchett .

Blanchett appears to have replaced Emma Thompson, who revealed in 2013 that she had recorded a narration “about a year and a half ago”, labelling the experience “very mysterious” and “free flow”.

The new iteration of Voyage of Time has received funding from Imax’s $50m (£33m) Original Film Fund, while additional partners include Broad Green Pictures, Wild Bunch and Sophisticated Films. “Terrence Malick is one of the most innovative film-makers in the world, and has literally been designing and making this movie with large-format cameras for over 30 years,” said Imax’s Greg Foster. “To be able to launch our Film Fund portfolio with Malick and his imaginative style of filmmaking is capturing lightning in a bottle. We look forward to working with Terry and his producing partners on this groundbreaking film.”

'Voyage Of Time' Trailer: A Gorgeous Documentary As Only Terrence Malick Can Deliver

Voyage of Time Trailer - Terrence Malick

The first trailer for Voyage of Time: Life's Journey , a new documentary from filmmaker Terrence Malick , debuted back in June ahead of a special 45-minute IMAX release of the film coming this fall. Brad Pitt narrates that version, and it's the only one confirmed for a US release so far. However, there's a feature-length, 90-minute cut of the film that is narrated by Cate Blanchett , and a new trailer has just debuted teasing that version of the movie.

Watch the new Voyage of Time trailer after the jump.

Empire Magazine had the exclusive on this trailer, which may indicate that the feature length version is on the verge of having a release date set in the United Kingdom. Or maybe they have the trailer because the 90-minute version of the film will be playing at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival this year.

The imagery here is stunning, making it a must-see on the IMAX screen, and Cate Blanchett's voice only makes it that much more alluring. However, I'm not entirely sure I want to see the cut of the movie that's half the length of the alternate version. Admittedly it's been reduced so that it's still satisfying as a film, but having 90 minutes of Terrence Malick's cinematic beauty like this would definitely be better.

If you're interested in taking a hard look at the making of Voyage of Time , complete with commentary from expert scientists, check out this article at The Film Stage right now . The shorter cut of Voyage of Time debuts in IMAX theaters on October 7th  but stay tuned to find out when we might see the 90-minute cut of the film hit theaters.

The unfolding of the universe takes place before your eyes, in this experience for the senses, mind and soul.

A labor of passion by director Terrence Malick ( Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life ), Voyage of Time: Life's Journey is an exploration into our planetary past and a search for humanity's place in the future. Humming with the energy of nature itself, the film melds innovative special effects with awe-inspiring footage from around the globe, in search of what lasts, what endures through time's changing scenes.

What does it mean, after all those eons, to be us, here, now?

The action traces the scientific chronology of earth, from the birth of the stars to the explosion of new life, to the planet-altering debut of humankind. Malick invites audiences to probe past, present and future in intimate ways. Working with a team of scientific advisors and visual effects artists led by Dan Glass ( The Tree of Life, Batman Begins, The Matrix Reloaded ) the film shows an array of never-witnessed natural phenomena – celestial and terrestrial, macroscopic and microscopic – in a variety of new ways.

The fierce geology of the early planet. The first cells, growing, dividing, exploring every niche open to them. The coming of fish, forests, dinosaurs and our own species with its need to reckon with everything – all this transforms into a hymn to nature, life and the universe. No two people will have the same experience.

VOYAGE OF TIME: Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett Will Narrate Two Versions of Terrence Malick's Epic

The movie will be released as both a 40-minute IMAX version and a 35mm feature-length film.

The journey of filmmaker Terrence   Malick 's Voyage of Time is nearing its own epic proportions at this point.  The conception for the film was first announced years ago as an IMAX documentary about the history of life in our universe (not exactly a slapdash subject).  But as Malick has been involved in several other movies since (including Knight of Cups ), the project seemed to have stalled.

Then in 2014, Voyage of Time was shopped to buyers at Cannes, and now, IMAX, along with Broad Green Pictures, will being joining Sophisticated Films and Wild Bunch to complete the financing.  Through this deal, Broad Green will receive the first North American distribution rights, after its exclusive IMAX release.

The film is also the first recipient of the IMAX Original Film Fund, which began in May.  According to the press release,

The Fund, capitalized at $50-plus million, will co-finance a portfolio of 10 original IMAX films that will enable IMAX’s worldwide network to provide new digital content to its institutional partners in the form of documentaries that employ cutting-edge techniques, innovative filmmakers such as Malick, and embrace fresh new perspectives in documentary storytelling.

Voyage of Time was spawned from footage Malik shot for The Tree of Life , and will continue to explore those kinds of complex themes of science and spirit, birth and death, and the largest regions of the cosmos down to the smallest life on Earth.  Two versions will be released: a 40-minute IMAX version, narrated by Brad Pitt , and a 35mm feature-length version narrated by Cate Blanchett .

The press release didn't mention the formerly planned 2016 release of the film, so that remains in question.  Still, with all of the backing in place and the voice actors now officially on the roster, Malick fans should be able to feel confident that this Voyage will eventually end up in theaters.

Here's the full press release:

LOS ANGELES, BERLIN (February 3, 2015) – IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX), together with Broad Green Pictures, today announced they are joining Sophisticated Films and Wild Bunch to complete financing of Terrence Malick’s VOYAGE OF TIME . Broad Green will have the first opportunity to distribute the feature film version in North America following the exclusive IMAX release.   Gabriel and Daniel Hammond of Broad Green Pictures are executive-producing the film along with Tanner Beard, Mary Bing, Yves Chevalier, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Jacques Perrin, Ryan Rettig, and Donald Rosenfeld. Dede Gardner, Nicolas Gonda, Sarah Green, Grant Hill, Brad Pitt, Bill Pohlad and Sophokles Tasioulis are producing. VOYAGE commenced international sales at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, with GAGA (JPN), MARS (FR), Lumière (BENELUX) and EDKO (HK) among the first to secure distribution rights.   VOYAGE OF TIME is a celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse. This film examines all that occurred to prepare the world that stands before us now: science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet.  Malick is working first in the IMAX format for a 40-minute version with scientific narration by Brad Pitt, followed by a 35mm feature-length version with narration by Cate Blanchett. VOYAGE OF TIME is the first recipient of financing from IMAX’s Original Film Fund, announced in May. ”Terrence Malick is one of the most innovative filmmakers in the world, and has literally been designing and making this movie with large-format cameras for over 30 years,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “To be able to launch our Film Fund portfolio with Malick and his imaginative style of filmmaking is capturing lightning in a bottle. We look forward to working with Terry and his producing partners on this groundbreaking film.”   “Terrence Malick is an innovator of epic scope,” said Gabriel and Daniel Hammond of Broad Green Pictures.  "We have long admired his work and could not be more excited to partner with him on this project.” “We are thrilled to partner with IMAX and Broad Green, who, along with our partners at Sophisticated Films and Wild Bunch, provide a combined expertise to ensure Terry’s vision is carried out at the highest level,” said Nicolas Gonda and Sarah Green.   Said Sophisticated’s Sophokles Tasioulis: “I am extremely pleased to welcome IMAX and Broad Green to VOYAGE OF TIME. In the past 12 months we have been working hard to secure the best imaginable set-up for Terry. With IMAX we give VOYAGE the perfect stage for the epic scale and ambition of the project and with Broad Green we bring on one of the most dynamic new powerhouses of the film industry.”   The deal was negotiated with the legal support of Stefan Luetje of Olswang Germany LLP, Alan Sacks at Frankfurt Kurnit and Christopher Tricarico, EVP of Business Affairs at Broad Green.

In 2018, the Spanish festival revamped its posters to feature a figure from contemporary cinema. Isabelle Huppert , Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Sigourney Weaver, Juliette Binoche, and Javier Bardem precede Blanchett as the official image this year, based on a portrait by the photographer Gustavo Papaleo.

Last month, it was announced that Blanchett would be part of the inaugural lineup for the Cannes Film Festival’s Immersive Competition section, the first-ever selection of augmented and  virtual reality  works to screen at the austere French film fest.

The eight competition titles and six out-of-competition screenings also include works featuring such talents as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown, and Tahar Rahim. The lineup highlights cutting-edge VR and AR techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.

Cate Blanchett to be honoured at San Sebastian film festival

Madrid (AFP) – Australian actor Cate Blanchett will receive a lifetime achievement award at Spain's San Sebastian film festival in September, organisers said Thursday.

Issued on: 09/05/2024 - 14:45 Modified: 09/05/2024 - 16:24

The 54-year-old will also feature on the main poster of the 72nd San Sebastian film festival, the highest-profile movie event in the Spanish-speaking world, which takes place from September 20 to 28.

Blanchett has won two Academy Awards: best actress for her performance in Woody Allen's 2004 drama "Blue Jasmine" and best supporting actress for her striking appearance as Katherine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator".

She has worked under numerous renowned directors, including Terrence Malick, Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro G. Inarritu and Guillermo del Toro.

The festival organisers said she was "one of contemporary cinema's leading actors" with a "career combining cinema d'auteur with crowd pleasers".

Past recipients of the so-called Donostia award -- the festival's highest honourary award -- include actors Meryl Streep, Richard Gere and Robert De Niro.

It will be the first time Blanchett, a university dropout who grew up in suburban Melbourne, visits San Sebastian.

She will be the second Australian to receive the prize, following in the footsteps of Hugh Jackman.

As well as scooping awards for her more arthouse work, she has also dabbled in blockbusters, playing the elf leader Galadriel in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and a Marvel villain in "Thor: Ragnarok".

Spanish star Javier Bardem will also receive the Donostia award he won last year but was unable to attend because of the Hollywood actors' strike, organisers said.

The prize is named after the Basque word for the coastal town of San Sebastian.

Cate Blanchett to Receive San Sebastian's 2024 Donostia Career Achievement Award

Two-time Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett is set to add another prestigious honor to her illustrious career. The San Sebastián Film Festival has just announced that Blanchett will be the recipient of the Donostia career achievement award at this year's 72nd edition of the Spanish event.

For decades, Blanchett has been one of the industry's most versatile and award-winning actors, headlining independent author-driven gems and Hollywood blockbusters alike. She is a recipient of two Venice Volpi Cups, four BAFTAs, and four Golden Globes, as well as an honorary French Academy César Award and a Spanish Academy Goya career achievement award.

In 1999, Blanchett received her first Oscar nomination for her work in Shekhar Kapur's "Elizabeth." She has been nominated seven more times in the quarter-century since, winning a pair of statues for performances as Katherine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" and the titular lead of Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine."

One way to judge an actor's career is to consider how many A-list filmmakers they have worked with. Few performers today can boast of a lineup of collaborators like Blanchett's. Directors who have benefited from her performances include Kapur, Scorsese and Allen, as well as Terrence Malick, Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, Ridley Scott, Sally Potter, Wes Anderson, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Woody Allen, Gillian Armstrong, Taika Waititi, Peter Jackson, Todd Haynes, Richard Linklater, Jim Jarmusch, Guillermo del Toro, Adam McKay and Todd Field, to name a few.

In addition to her authorial fare, Blanchett has also appeared in many big-budget commercial films, including "Thor: Ragnarok," the "Lord of the Rings" series and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." She is an accomplished voice actor, having appeared in films from the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise, the English-language version of Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo" and a particularly fun turn as a violent monkey in "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio."

In August, Blanchett will star in Eli Roth's action-packed adaptation of the "Borderlands" video game franchise, and yesterday, it was revealed that she joined the Zellner Brothers' upcoming alien invasion comedy, "Alpha Gang."

Behind the camera, Blanchett is co-founder and principal of the production company Dirty Films alongside partners Andrew Upton and Coco Francini. The organization recently launched Proof of Concept, a program offering emerging filmmakers financial support, mentorship and exhibition opportunities.

For Dirty Films, Blanchett recently produced and appeared in Warwick Thornton's award-winning "The New Boy" and produced Christos Nikou's "Fingernails," both of which screened at San Sebastián. Other producer credits include Todd Hayne's "Carol," Todd Field's "Tár," and the 10-time Emmy-nominated series ""Apples," the 10-time Emmy-nominated series "Mrs America."

In 2018, San Sebastián began a new tradition of featuring a contemporary performer on its poster each year. This year, Blanchett is the face of San Sebastián and features on the poster, which was revealed with today's announcement. The poster was designed by graphic designer José Luis Lanzagorta, and it is based on a photograph taken by Gustavo Papaleo.

Fantastical Portraits of Cate Blanchett

photo of Cate Blanchett

I love these (haunting? are they haunting?) photos of Cate Blanchett taken by Jack Davison for this 2022 profile in the NY Times Magazine .

When the magazine asked the photographer Jack Davison to create the art for this story, he took inspiration from Cate Blanchett’s legendary gift at transforming herself on film. Over the course of a four-hour shoot, across nine different setups, Davison made the fantastical, perspective-bending portraits that appear here.

I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation..

Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
