Basic Info You Must Know for Keukenhof 2024

Before you plan your Keukenhof day trip from Amsterdam, here are some important must knows…

Keukenhof 2024 Dates

In 2024 the Keukenhof Gardens are scheduled to open from March 21 – May 12.

Keukenhof 2024 Tickets

To make the most of your Keukenhof experience, I highly advise you get your tickets in advance – in fact, since 2022 this is the much cheaper way as in-person tickets cost 3.50 euro more.

There are a lot of different kinds of offers you can take advantage of to secure the best deal and it’s a bit confusing so if you need help deciding what’s best for you, I recommend you check out my full Keukenhof tickets guide here.

Otherwise, here’s a quick summary of the different ticket types and where to get them:

Combitickets:  Combitickets bundle your transport TO/FROM Keukenhof and your entry ticket to the gardens, which = savings! Which one you get depends on where you’re coming from. I’ll explain these more in detail later.

All-inclusive tours:  Many tour operators offer day tours that include your Keukenhof ticket. Sometimes, these tours can even be cheaper than attempting to do the entire trip independently!  For example, here’s one for 34 euros, which is even less than the official Combiticket from Amsterdam on the Keukenhof website. The downside? Less freedom (and suffocating alongside a bus full of your fellow tourists).

Attraction bundles:  Lastly, attraction bundles allow you to purchase tickets for Keukenhof and other main Holland attractions at the same time for a discounted rate. For example, you could book the following:

Keukenhof & Zaanse Schans Combo Day Tour:  If you’re looking for a packed day full of Dutchy goodness, this combo tour brings you to Keukenhof and the windmill village of Zaanse Schans for just under 70 euros. Click here to check reviews and availability.

Keukenhof + Sightseeing Windmill Cruise: If you’d like to bundle your visit to Keukenhof with a little scenic cruise to see windmills, this bundle is less than 60 euros. Click here to check reviews and availability.

Volendam/Marken, Zaanse Schans & Keukenhof: For just under 100 euros, you can enjoy this full day whirlwind tour of Holland, with a visit to Keukenhof, a tour of Zaanse Schans Windmill village, tours of the fishing villages of Volendam and Marken, and a cheese factory visit. This is definitely a jam-packed bundle, but good value for money if you have a short amount of time in Holland! Click here to check reviews and availability.

Keukenhof 2024 Theme

Historically, Keukenhof has had a different theme every year that is represented throughout its various beautiful displays! That said, 2023 didn’t seem to have a clear theme and they haven’t announced a theme for 2024 so it’s possible they may no longer be doing them.

Here are some photos from 2019’s theme, Flower Power, complete with peace signs, pop culture nods and all sorts of wonderful 70s goodness:

How to Get from Amsterdam to Keukenhof Gardens

As I mentioned in the intro, there are a lot of different options for getting to Keukenhof from Amsterdam.

Which option is best depends on what you value, whether that’s convenience, price, or flexibility. Here’s a rundown of each option for you:

OPTION A (Most Convenient!): Book an Amsterdam to Keukenhof Gardens Tour

Cost:  Starts at 33 euros per person

If you’re worried about finding a tour that gets you from Amsterdam to Keukenhof, you can breathe. There are genuinely dozens of tour companies that provide this package, so you have tons of options.

The best part? Tours are both convenient, AND quite cheap, so if you want to visit Keukenhof without stressing about lugging your own butt around public transport, then this is a great choice.

This option will get you from central Amsterdam to Keukenhof directly in less than an hour.

Is it worth it to pay for an Amsterdam to Keukenhof tour rather than just do it yourself? I think the answer is yes. Honestly, sometimes it’s even cheaper than paying for an official combi-ticket, so I would definitely look into it and compare prices at the very least.

OPTION B: Get from Amsterdam Schipol Airport to Keukenhof Gardens with public transportation

Cost: 31.50 euros (when purchased online ) for a Keukenhof Express + Keukenhof entry Combi-ticket

The journey from Schipol Airport to Keukenhof is an easy one – there’s the direct Keukenhof Express bus which gets you to Keukenhof’s main entrance in around 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

STEP ONE: Buy a timed ticket online.

STEP TWO: Take the Keukenhof Express (Bus 858) at your pre-booked time from Schipol Airport’s bus station, which is located in front of the airport.

STEP THREE: Rejoice! You’ve made it to Keukenhof.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

OPTION C (Most Flexible!): Drive to Keukenhof from Amsterdam

Cost:  Parking is available for 6 euros

Last but not least, if you want to get to Keukenhof for your day trip before everyone else, then driving is probably your best bet to avoid crowds.

And don’t worry about getting lost – Keukenhof is ideally situated between Amsterdam and the Hague, so you can easily get to it using Google Maps. There’s also plenty of parking at Keukenhof available for 8 euros per vehicle.

How to Get from Amsterdam Schipol Airport to Keukenhof

Another option if you’re getting from Amsterdam to Keukenhof is going straight from the airport. If this is the case, you can actually take a direct bus straight from the airport to Keukenhof.

Cost:  25 euros (when purchased  online ) for a Keukenhof Express + Keukenhof entry Combi-ticket

The journey from Schipol Airport to Keukenhof is an easy one – there’s the direct Keukenhof Express bus (858) which gets you to Keukenhof’s main entrance in around 30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you’re going directly from Schipol to Keukenhof, you should probably get a 25 euro Combi-ticket which covers your roundtrip busfare and your skip-the-line entry to Keukenhof.

Things to do at Keukenhof During Your Day Trip

While Keukenhof is huge, doing it as a day trip will give you more than enough time to fully appreciate the gardens in all their glory.

Here are a few of the things that you need to make sure you don’t miss during your Amsterdam to Keukenhof trip!

1. Go pavilion hopping

One of the highlights of visiting Keukenhof is exploring the many covered pavilions they have scattered around the park.

Be sure to grab yourself a park map at the start of your visit to ensure you don’t miss any!

These pavilions often have their own themes/specialties, with some even running shows throughout the day.

You can read my full Keukenhof guide here for a more detailed breakdown of pavilions and what they have to offer.

2. Marvel at the many outdoor gardens

Of course, the main reason you’ll have done this Keukenhof day trip is to see all the lovely outdoor gardens!

Besides the manicured displays, they also have a few inspiration gardens set up (with more realistic gardening ideas for your own home), so don’t miss those!

3. Take advantage of all the hilarious Keukenhof photo opps

One of the most wonderful things about visiting Keukenhof (in my opinion) is that everybody there is shamelessly taking a million photos per second, so nobody is there to judge if you want to indulge your inner tourist and go wildly snap-happy as well.

Keukenhof makes this easy with a variety of ‘made for Instagram’ photo opportunities that can be found all throughout the park.

My personal favourite for 2019 was a giant flowery wedding dress that you could pretend to wear!

6 Final Tips for Your Amsterdam to Keukenhof Day Trip

Alright, before I send you off on your merry way, here are some final tips to help ensure that your trip is as magical as you’ve always dreamed.

1. Make sure to buy your Keukenhof tickets in advance

I realize I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but remember: Keukenhof gets busy!

If you’ve made it through all 2000 words of this blog post and still think you should walk up and get a ticket on the spot, then let me quickly shake you like a maraca and point you towards the many online tickets you can get right now in advance.

Click here to get your instantly downloadable skip-the-line tickets

I got my ticket online the night before on  GetYourGuide  and used my mobile voucher to walk straight in. This allowed me to smugly bypass a lot of other people while walking in, and not only did it save me time, it gave me a nice little ego boost too.

2. Make sure you arrive for your designated time slot

My old advice used to be to get to Keukenhof early! During my visit, by the time noon came along, the crowds were so intense that I wanted to just hide in a corner and cry.

BUT, times have changed and now Keukenhof requires timed tickets. Based on the website FAQ, it seems they are very strict on arriving within the designated time slot, so make sure you get there when your ticket says to.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

3. Avoid weekends, holidays and special events when visiting Keukenhof

For the sake of your sanity, I implore you to also avoid weekends, holidays and special events as much as possible when planning your Keukenhof day trip.

Not only will these be the busiest times to visit and the park itself will be swarming with humans and selfie sticks, your commute will also include the bonus of thousands of new friends.

Unless you enjoy being stuck on a train with a stranger breathing into your ear, then avoid these dates at all cost!

NOTE: With the new timed ticket system, crowds are a bit better than before since there’s a visitor cap in place, but I still recommend booking for off peak times to increase your chances of fewer crowds.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

4. Decide if you want to visit the gardens, the tulip fields or both

One of the most common mistakes that visitors make is they assume Keukenhof consists of those sprawling colourful tulip fields you see photos of, when this couldn’t be farther from the case.

Keukenhof itself is simply manicured gardens/pavilions, and while it may be located near those fields, the way you visit them is completely different.

So, to help plan your trip, decide first whether it’s the fields you want to see, the gardens you want to see, or both… then plan accordingly. My guide to visiting free tulip fields in the Netherlands can help with that.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

5. Have a plan for all the places you want to see

Keukenhof is huge, and honestly, as a first-timer, I found it really overwhelming!

I had no idea that the park had so many different pavilions, and while I stared at my map for approximately 10 million years, I still ended up missing a few things.

This is why I’d recommend getting acquainted with the park before you visit.

You can check out my full Keukenhof guide here for a virtual walkthrough of the different spaces, along with a rundown of the best photo opps in the park.

6. Bring some snacks and water

Last but not least, doing Keukenhof as a day trip is already expensive as it is, so to keep costs down, I would recommend smuggling your own snacks and water into the park.

I say smuggle, but it’s totally allowed and encouraged, so go ahead and bring that tub of Nutella 😉

While there are a variety of concession stands scattered around Keukenhof, as you might expect, prices aren’t exactly affordable.

When a burger, fries and beer costs you 17.50 euros, I’d say chucking a sandwich into your bag is a nice idea.

Day Trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof Flower Gardens: Your Complete Keukenhof Park Guide

Last Updated: October 15, 2022 //  by  Ashley Smith Leave a Comment

Taking a side trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof Flower Gardens is an absolute must-do when visiting Amsterdam in the spring. This guide will tell you everything you need to know to do so!

On my last trip to the Netherlands, my Amsterdam 3-day itinerary was as wide open as the overstuffed carryon I had no hope of zipping. However, there were a few things I knew I really wanted to see: the Anne Frank House , a bicycle collision, someone so high they were absolutely losing their minds, and TULIPS! (Check, check, and check!)

And for those, I would take a quick and easy day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof Flower Gardens in the town of Lisse—one of the best tulip fields in the Netherlands.

Table of Contents

It’s tulip time!

Tulips have been cultivated since the 10 th century and are native to areas ranging from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal ) to the Middle East, North Africa, Greece, and all the way to China.

Today, you can find them almost everywhere—notably, Northwestern Europe and your local grocer, but nowhere more prevalent than in the stomach contents of the deer families that sneak into my flower beds at night.

Tulips have come to be seen as the quintessential cultural symbol of the Netherlands. In Turkish culture , tulips represent paradise on Earth; in the Netherlands they represent the brevity of life.

What is Keukenhof?

Keukenhof (Dutch for kitchen garden ) is the largest flower garden in the world. It boasts 7 million flowers, 800 varieties of tulips, and one really tiny goat I should’ve made room for in my suitcase.

There are 9 miles of walking paths through beautiful wooded areas, wild floral arrangements, event pavilions, and even a windmill you can climb so you can brag about how high you got in Amsterdam.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Remember when Dorothy was imagining a place over the rainbow? Where happy little bluebirds fly and your dog won’t get unfairly euthanized? She believed it was “not a place you can get to by a boat or a train” and she was right. Only a category F2 tornado, a rogue hot air balloon , or a quick bus ride from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport can get you there.

Basically, if you want to see gorgeous floral displays and fields and fields of colorful flowers while you’re in the Netherlands, this is the place.

Amsterdam to Keukenhof: where is it?

Keukenhof Flower Gardens is located in the town of Lisse, just twenty minutes southwest of Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport (but about 40 minutes southwest of downtown Amsterdam).

How to take a day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof

The quickness and ease of getting there is what makes a trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof an ideal way to spend a spring day in Holland. (Even a straw-for-brains scarecrow could do it, just sayin’.)

But if you want to drive yourself, check out the best Amsterdam car rental deals here.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

1. Start at Schiphol airport

For starters, getting from Amsterdam to Keukenhof is easiest when you start from Schiphol airport, so get yourself there first. This should be fairly easy as it seems all roads lead to Schiphol. (Do I even need to make a Yellow Brick Road reference here? Imma skip it.)

There are other ways to get to Keukenhof but, if you’re staying anywhere near Central Amsterdam, this is by far the easiest, fastest, and most direct route.

At Schiphol, look for the giant inflatable tulip. In fact, we told our cab driver we were headed to Keukenhof and he dropped us off right at the giant tulip. They really do make it as easy as possible.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

2. Store your luggage if you need to

Because I had already checked out of my hotel and would be heading down to Belgium after my day at Keukenhof, I needed to store my luggage at Schiphol. (Yes, Keukenhof has bag storage, but it’s too small. I’ll get to that.)

Now, yes, I was apprehensive about storing my bags in a locker at a train station. (I do stuffer from crippling post-traumatic train station stress disorder , or PTTSSD for short, after all.) However, I’d never before been to Amsterdam, the Merry Old Land of Awes…ome public transportation—the most organized, cleanest, loveliest, trustworthiest of all train stations/airports.

This was no Rome Termini or Gare du Nord. This is a concourse of a different color. So, I felt perfectly safe storing my ruby slippers luggage here. And it really couldn’t be easier. Actually, it could–I made you a map.

From the big inflatable tulip, enter the airport and walk straight to the opposite end. Veer right and follow the yellow signs (of course they’re yellow!) leading downstairs to the luggage storage area.

3. Purchase bus + Keukenhof entrance tickets

Back out at the giant tulip you’ll see a truck with pictures of tulips all over it. At this truck you can buy all-in-one round-trip bus tickets from Amsterdam to Keukenhof and back, plus your Keukenhof entrance ticket. They call this the Combiticket.

Do not lose this ticket; don’t put it down on the bus or otherwise misplace it. You just have to hold onto it for twenty minutes. I have faith in you.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

4. Get on the Keukenhof bus

Mere feet away from the ticket truck is the bus from Amsterdam to Keukenhof. It, too, is covered in and surrounded by tulips.

There are Keukenhof signs, a designated pathway, and, for whatever reason, a team of people leading you the five feet to the front of the bus.

The only way you could screw this up is if you’d just completed a dizzy bat race or something. Well, this is Amsterdam, I guess that’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Day Tours from Amsterdam to Keukenhof

I get it—as easy as this is, you may still want to simply join one of the Amsterdam to Keukenhof tours, and that’s fine too! I am all about just letting someone else do all the thinking and preparing.

If that’s the case, here are some Amsterdam to Keukenhof group tours to check out:

This 8-9 hour tour not only includes a trip to Keukenhof, but also includes time in Giethoorn as well. (This is too challenging to do in one day using public transportation.)

Amsterdam to Keukenhof park guide

To visit Keukenhof is to experience so much Dutch! Besides all the flowers, there’s also… a windmill and guys in wooden shoes, traditional Dutch dancers wearing traditional Dutch clothing next to some guys riding traditional Dutch bicycles.

There are traditional Dutch beauties greeting you upon arrival, and traditional Dutch herring to eat on traditional Dutch benches next to a traditional Dutch lake. Or whatever.

In short, a day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof is the best possible way to absorb historically Dutch culture when you’re strapped for time in the Netherlands and more or less tethered to Amsterdam.

Keukenhof opening 2022

The thing you MUST know about Keukenhof flower gardens is that it’s only open for a brief time each year. And I mean brief… less than two months actually. (Tulips represent brevity in the Netherlands, remember?)

For 2022, Keukenhof is only open from March 24 – May 15, 2022. During that time, it is open every day from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM.

(I’m just gonna throw it out there that’s also about the same timeframe as tornado season in Kansas. Just sayin’.)

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Keukenhof 2022 theme

Every year Keukenhof designs their floral arrangements and displays based on a particular theme. The Keukenhof theme for 2022 is “Flower Classics.”

Of this theme, Keukenhof says: “Flowers are used as classic symbols in art, architecture and design. Roses symbolise love and tulips stand for spring! At Keukenhof we bring these classics together, with the wonderful tulip as the radiant centrepiece!”

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

What to see at Keukenhof

Geez, where do I even start? Actually, let’s start with flowers. At Keukenhof, you can see just about every flower variety you could dream up. All sizes, shapes, and colors, and not at all restricted to tulips.

There are indoor pavilions with flowers, outdoor gardens, incredible floral arrangements all around the entire park, multiple flower shows, and beyond. Additionally, there are five themed “Inspirational Gardens”:

  • Reconnection Garden featuring sustainable materials that bring you back to nature
  • Tropical Beach Garden with a beach-y theme under some palm trees
  • Green Tea Garden that features a huge selection of herbs (where you can drink tea)
  • Cottage Garden that feels like a retreat from the city with its wild plants and relaxing atmosphere
  • Red Romance Garden full of cherub statuary and all that lovey-dovey stuff

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

There’s the Tulpomania Exhibition, flower mosaics and walk of fame, and, naturally, a flower bulb shop! Looking to feed your urban wildlife back home something from the Netherlands? Here you go.

There’s also a windmill you can climb and talk to the caretaker about how windmills work. (This was seriously news to me.) You can also get great views of the tulip fields from up there.

There are performances and dancing, mazes, huge displays of artwork, and even baby animals. You can take a boat ride through the flower bulb fields, explore them by bike, or take guided tours with a Keukenhof guide.

Tips for your Amsterdam to Keukenhof trip

While it’s a pretty self-explanatory day trip, there are a few things you should know before you go. Check it:

Don’t bring big items

Like I said earlier, if you’ll be checking out of your hotel and/or on the way to somewhere else afterwards, you’ll want to store your luggage/bigger items at Schiphol.

Keukenhof does have lockers you can rent for a couple of euros (that you get back afterwards) but they are much too small to fit a suitcase. Their locker dimensions are 10” x 21” x 17”. You may be able to fit a small backpack in there, but not much more than that.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Arrive early

If the info above and the numerous photos don’t get the point across, there is so much to do and see on a day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof.

Definitely aim to arrive early in the morning so you can take full advantage of the day and not have to feel rushed here. Even if you’re a go-go-go traveler like me, you’ll definitely want to slow down and spend more time here. I promise.

Personally, I felt rushed during my time there because I had to get back to Amsterdam to catch my train to Brussels. I spent about 3 hours in the park though I definitely wish I’d at least another hour. (And I’m not like a super flower nerd or anything, it’s just an amazing and huge place! And you heard me mention tiny goats, right?)

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

That being said, Keukenhof themselves says 3 hours is about typical of what people spend there. Maybe you’re like me and will want more time. Maybe you’re more like Dorothy who yearned to visit a beautiful, carefree place somewhere over the rainbow, actually got there, then immediately said, “I’d give anything to get out of here altogether!”

So, how long you’ll want to spend there may vary. But, it’s always nice to have the option of more time in case you do find yourself totally enthralled or maybe just wanna take a nap in some poppies.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Wear comfortable shoes

Keukenhof is huge ; you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. Most of it will be on paved paths, but some of it may be on grass and some of it might be wet. Sometimes you’ll be hopping over ponds on wooden planks and maybe you’ll even ride a bike.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for your trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof. Trust me, despite how much they speak to you, do not opt for wooden clogs today!

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Take note of that small window

By that I mean, don’t forget (or fail to notice at all) that Keukenhof is only open for about six weeks out of the entire year. If Keukenhof (or just seeing tulips in Holland) is high up on your bucket list, do not miss this crucial point!

Keukenhof alone is definitely worth visiting Amsterdam in the spring so you totally won’t regret prioritizing it.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Eat there or bring your own

Personally, I chose to eat at Keukenhof on my visit because it’s just so much more convenient and I was really amped to try some herring. (Which was so delicious BTW!)

However, they do allow you to bring your own food if you want to have yourself a little picnic among the flowers. (You just can’t eat it at the restaurants.) If you’ve got time and access to a grocery store in Amsterdam, this might be a delightful (and cheaper) way to go.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Work on your squats

I’m just saying… you’ll be doing a lot of this all day trying to take photos of alllll the flowers. It wouldn’t hurt to work on building up those quads ahead of time.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Don’t forget your antihistamines

I don’t think I need to remind you, allergy sufferers, that Keukenhof flower gardens are loaded with flowers, and pollen, and bees, and probably a lot of other things that’ll have you reaching for your antihistamines.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Best time to visit Keukenhof

The tulips in the fields outside Keukenhof (which you can see from the windmill) are grown for their bulbs, not their flowers. Because of this, the flowers are plucked from the plants which strengthens the bulbs for next year.

This typically occurs on or close to April 30 th each year. I visited on March 31 st , so the tulips weren’t fully in bloom yet. So, if you want to see the tulip fields in full color, visit in mid-April for your best chance.

That being said, the best time to visit Keukenhof also depends on which flowers you want to see the most. If you’re more into daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths, you’ll want to visit at the start of Keukenhof season.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

Unlike the bulb fields, the tulips inside the park don’t get plucked and grow huge and colorful. These tulips bloom in the latter half of the Keukenhof season. Towards the end of the season you’ll also get the benefit of fully green trees.

So, if I were to visit again, I personally would visit in mid-late April. I would love to have seen more of the tulips and leaves on the trees, but alas, I did not know. Now you know.

Other than that, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are the least crowded days to visit. Enjoy your day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof! There’s no place like Holland.

Hi, I'm Gerrit

I enjoy sharing useful tips about the beauty of this county.

Are you wondering how to travel to the Keukenhof from Amsterdam?

Look no further. As a Dutchman who has lived here my whole life, I know all the different ways to get to the Keukenhof .

There is not one solution that works for everybody. It depends, as always, on your situation.

That is why we explore all options in this article today. So you can find the right option for you.

When you’re short on time :

For most people, using a combi-ticket is the most effective method to reach Keukenhof. This ticket includes a tour bus ride from Amsterdam and a time slot entry ticket to the Keukenhof Tulip Garden.

It’s hassle-free , convenient, and relieves the stress of managing multiple tickets or negotiating traffic. It’s important to know starting in 2024, the Keukenhof Gardens will be using timed slots for entry . If you book a combination ticket including a transfer you don’t have to worry about this, the tour company will take care of the correct tickets.

Going to the Keukenhof from Amsterdam, this is the view why people go.

Table of Contents

Combi-tickets: direct transfer bus + entrance to the keukenhof.

To travel from Amsterdam to Keukenhof, you have two great options: combi-tickets. Both include a bus transfer and entrance to the Keukenhof Gardens.  Both options leave from near Amsterdam Central Station.

Buses from the This is Holland Experience (Amsterdam North) : This option departs from the This is Holland Experience, an interactive exhibit that offers a simulated flight over the Netherlands. I love this attraction, and it is worth buying tickets for (cheaper online). I always visit with my overseas friends. But you don’t have to, and it’s not what this article is about, just a side note.  It’s also the departure point for scheduled tour buses to the Keukenhof that leave every 30 minutes. The cost is only €35 with Get Your Guide, a trusted online marketplace for travel activities (and €7.50 per person cheaper than Tiqets).  Your ticket will include roundtrip transportation by a luxury coach and guaranteed entrance to the Keukenhof . And the nice thing is you can choose your return time.

You’ll always have a guaranteed seat on your booked departure, and for your return to Amsterdam, a seat is guaranteed for the departure 3 hours after your arrival.  Buses leave from Amsterdam every 30 minutes , and you can stay longer or shorter and return with any other departure (space allowing). It’s easy to get to their departure point . The This is Holland Experience is located at Overhoeksplein 51, Amsterdam.

It’s a 5-minute free ferry ride from the North Exit of Amsterdam Central Station to Buiksloterweg (F3). Ferries leave every 5-10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Once at the other side, it’s a 2-minute walk to the left.

Departure point at the This is Holland Experience for the Keukenhof shuttle bus.

Tours and Tickets : This option has fewer departures but might be more convenient because they depart from inside Amsterdam’s Central Station, where they have their own store. Go to the North Exit. It’s in the far right corner (if you have the trains behind you). At Tours and Tickets you can book a tour with just the transfer and entrance , or with a live tour guide on board for extra commentary and someone available for questions. This carries a small surcharge. It’s another direct transfer , stress-free option to reach the gardens. Just know that your departure time and return time are fixed . But they still allow plenty of time in the gardens.

Amsterdam to Keukenhof Express Bus

If you’re a holder of an Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket , you’re in luck. This travel ticket covers Amsterdam and the surrounding area, including the Keukenhof Express, a convenient and direct bus service from Amsterdam to the Keukenhof Gardens.

Keukenhof buses depart from various locations like Amsterdam Rai (for Amsterdam), Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, and Leiden.

These are the three  express bus lines that all travel non-stop from their departure points:

From Amsterdam , you can take the Keukenhof bus 852. They’re easy to spot, with images of flowers covered across the buses. Busses leave from the RAI convention center, a short metro ride from the Amsterdam City Center (included in the “Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket.”)

The travel time is roughly an hour .

From Schiphol Airport , you can take Keukenhof Express bus 858. This is an ideal choice for those flying into the Netherlands and don’t need to go to the city center. The journey from the airport is direct and takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

But this bus is popular, often waiting lines are long. It will remain to be seen if that is better this year now that Keukenhof started working with timed slots.

Keukenhof Express bus 854 departs from Leiden and is more useful for locals than for tourists unless you booked your hotel in Leiden.

Leiden is outside the cover area for the “Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket”; thus, you can’t use it on this line.

The Keukenhof Bus from Amsterdam to Keukenhof is public transport . Anybody can board it, and they run on a schedule. So it’s slightly different than a tour.

It’s important to note that the park works now with timed entry slots. Tickets are expected to sell out. Thus if you don’t travel on a tour, but with a pass like the “Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket.” (or travel with a car), you must reserve a Keukenhof entrance ticket well in advance!

Guided Tour To Keukenhof

There are multiple ways to visit the Keukenhof Gardens on a tour from Amsterdam. Here are a few options for you.

Go City Pass Keukenhof Tour

First, I want to mention this great deal: the Go City Pass . Go City is an I amsterdam Card alternative focusing more on popular attractions than museums. I had the ability to try it recently, and I had an amazing time in the city.

Go City Pass digitally on your phone.

I saved so much money compared to regular fees, and the attractions were often completely different than the I amsterdam Card (which is also great if you love museums). You can read my review about the I amsterdam Card here.

But what sets the Go City Pass apart is that besides all the fantastic attractions they include year-round, they also have a tour and admission to the Keukenhof in their program during flower season (when the Keukenhof park is opened) without any additional costs.

It’s an amazing deal . Now to take advantage of this you have to book your Go City Pass early and make reservations for the Keukenhof tour as soon as they become available.

You can get your Go City Pass (plus more information) here.

Tours and Tickets Daily Guided Tour

Although this tour is priced slightly higher (compared to the basic transfer and entrance option), it has the added benefit of a live guide on the bus.

This means you get more information about the gardens and the Netherlands, and you have the ability to ask questions. The departure time is fixed, as is the return to Amsterdam, with plenty of free time in the gardens.

Since this tour departs in the afternoon , the park will be slightly less crowded since the morning visitors have already left. But mind the word relative, this park is always busy when it’s open. You’re extremely lucky if it is quiet.

More information about the tour can be found here , where you can also directly book it from the provider.

Local Tip: Avoid rip-offs.  I saw one blogger recommending this Keukenhof tour on Viator that said to include Tulip Experience Amsterdam, another thing to thick of your list. It’s not something to tick off your list. It’s just a stop at a Tulip grower like any other, but you pay €45 extra for the “privilege”, I don’t think their having a swing for the kids makes up for doubling the prices from the tours I recommend above.

Explore Beyond Keukenhof

A trip from Amsterdam to the Keukenhof Gardens is a must on most visitors’ lists, but I have often heard they’re disappointed after their visit. Why is that?

Let’s first say the gardens are gorgeous . Beautiful, it’s not that.

But many people expect to see vast tulip fields , but it’s not a tulip field. Instead, it’s a meticulously maintained indoor and outdoor garden with various flower displays. It’s been around for decades and it’s gorgeous, but it’s not the same as the fields. There are tulipfields around Keukenhof, but not really inside.

Tulips bloom only very shortly. For about three weeks, tulip season is only from mid-April to the beginning of May. The park is open for six weeks. Double that time.

To have something to offer for all visitors, also those coming early, or late, most displays are indoors. And it’s not just tulips in the gardens either. They also display flowers other than tulips.

We often call it the tulips gardens , but it’s a flower garden instead, a small but important difference.

PS:  did you know it’s the largest flower garden in the world?

This Is How You Get More Out Of Your Experience

Here are a few tours options close to the Keukenhof to see a bit more. How about, a helicopter tour, or travel with your own electric vehicle from field to fields around Lisse?

But to truly experience the Dutch flower fields , I recommend traveling far from the Keukenhof area. This is very touristy.

A true Hidden Holland tip is to go to the large production fields far north of Amsterdam or to Flevoland. This is where you can see endless fields in every color imaginable

It’s best to rent a car , to visit these areas. Since there are not on the tourist (or train map).

Or consider a private tour by yours truly.

I offer a full-day private tour of the lesser-known production tulip fields in the North East and we visit the visit village of Giethoorn, where streets are canals.

This is where you experience the authentic Dutch tulip industry , with fields of vibrant tulips stretching as far as the eye can see in every color imaginable.

This tour is quite popular and tends to get booked quickly, especially because it can only be done in a short time window from mid-April to the first week of May.

It’s private so that no other people will join us. It’s just you and me as your guide . I recommend booking well in advance to secure your spot if you’re interested in this.

This private tour includes door-to-door transportation in a comfortable SUV to the production fields in the north. This is NOT in the direction of Lisse, and we will not visit the Keukenhof garden. You’ll need to do that on your own with one of the options above if you want to do both.

Traveling to Keukenhof Gardens By Train

While you can take the train from Amsterdam , I don’t recommend it. Because you can only travel by train from Amsterdam to Leiden. From there, you still need to transfer to a bus to get to the park. Then you can just as well board a bus from Amsterdam directly, or take one from the airport.

Using this route by train will also be more expensive , will not save you money, and won’t be faster.

Keukenhof By Car

It’s not complicated to get from Amsterdam to Keukenhof by car . But prepare for potentially heavy traffic.

The roads from Amsterdam to Keukenhof Gardens can get quite busy , especially during the weekends when the locals come and visit in droves.

And if you think you made it to the park, you might need to wait long to enter the parking lot .

My best advice opt for a weekday visit and plan to arrive early!

Speaking about parking, it’s available for €8 ( 2024 price ).

And again, tickets are now allocated through the new time-slot system to manage the influx of visitors. Make sure to get your skip the line Keukenhof tickets well in advance. You wouldn’t want to drive there only to be turned away at the gate.

The gardens are located in Lisse, about 25 miles / 40 kilometers from Amsterdam. Here is the address for Navigation :

Stationsweg 166A 2161 AM Lisse

This will get you to the main entrance.

The travel time from Amsterdam to the Keukenhof is 30 minutes from the airport and 60 minutes from the city center of Amsterdam.

I recommend Rental Cars and Discovery Cars if you’re looking for the best rental car deals. I always book with Rental Cars.

Cars are hard to get , so book yours on time too! Especially Rental Cars has great policies if plans change, so it’s no risk to do so early.

Me at the Keukenhof.

Biking to Keukenhof

Althought this is theoretically possible , I won’t recommend it for most people.

The distance is 20 miles / 35 kilometers. Which is a long way. If you like to do this, it is a fun ride , past the airport, and some flower fields. Make sure to rent an electric bicycle. The journey should then take no more then 90 minutes each way (without stops, of course).

You can rent a bicycle here for the best prices.

Hotel Recommendations near the Keukenhof

There are no great hotels directly adjacent to Keukenhof Park .

I would recommend Van Der Valk Sassenheim if you have your own car. It’s near enough and comfortable, with easy parking and a great breakfast buffet.

But for most people, I recommend either staying at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol . The airport has many hotels in all price classes for every budget, and from the airport, it’s easy to visit the Keukenhof by bus 858.

Alternatively, you can opt to stay in Amsterdam . The city offers many hotels. From central Amsterdam, getting to Keukenhof Gardens with different options is easy.

Find A Place To Stay In Amsterdam

Find accommodation in Amsterdam for the lowest prices on your favorite platform. What's great about this map is that it shows both Hotels , as VRBO rentals (AirBNB but then cheaper).

Update your (intended) travel dates for accurate prices . TIP: Zoom out on the map (-) in the bottom right corner. This will show more options and availability.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Keukenhof

When is the keukenhof open.

The Keukenhof is only open for a very short time in spring. Right now, it’s closed for the remainder of 2023. Next year, the opening times are from Thursday, March 21, through Sunday, May 12. The opening hours are from 8 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., seven days a week, including Sundays and holidays.

What are the Best Times to Visit Keukenhof?

The best time to visit Keukenhof from Amsterdam is on a weekday. These days are typically less crowded compared to the weekends.

I would recommend visiting from mid-April through early May because most people come to the Keukenhof to see the Tulips in bloom.

This window falls within the peak bloom period for tulips in the Netherlands. If you visit too early or too late, the tulips might not be there, especially outside.

April 20th is the day the Tulip Festival or Bloemencorso parade is held. This is extremely popular; millions visit the 25-mile-long parade on the same day.

And many think it’s also a great time to visit the Keukenhof Gardens since it’s so close. But it is not a great idea, it will be so crowded. Distances are short in the Netherlands, so return to the park the day before or after.

What if I miss my Tour or Bus departure?

If you happen to miss your scheduled departure, don’t panic. You can usually take the next departure if there is available space. However, I recommend arriving early to avoid such situations because of your time slot entry at the park. It will be easier to reschedule a tour with a combination ticket than when traveling alone.

Most likely, they won’t send you away if you’re one bus later, but they might not honor your ticket if it’s by a lot. Don’t take the risk.

Do I need to pre-book my Keukenhof tickets?

Yes, A B S O L U T E L Y, starting in 2024, Keukenhof has introduced a new time-slot system. This means you must pre-book your tickets, which can easily be done online. It’s a measure to control the crowd and provide a better experience for visitors. Because since re-opening after Covid the visitor numbers have exploded, and it wasn’t fun anymore.

Are Keukenhof Buses Wheelchair-friendly?

The Keukenhof Express is designed to be accessible to all visitors since it is public transportation. It’s wheelchair-friendly, with a low-floor entry system for easy boarding. Each bus has places for two wheelchairs. Mobile scooters are not officially allowed, but I have seen them board. It depends on the driver.

The tour bus coaches like those from Tours and Tickets, and the transfer service from This is Holland will transport wheelchairs in the luggage hold, but they can’t be inside the seating area. You have to be able to take a few steps to get in. If this is a problem, travel with the Keukenhof Express instead.

Can I buy Keukenhof Combi tickets on the Bus?

No, starting in 2024, Keukenhof Park has implemented a time-slot system, requiring all visitors to book in advance. So, you’ll need to secure your entrance tickets online before you visit the park. The transit ride can be paid on board but will be more expensive than getting your combination in advance.

Can I use a GVB travel pass (like the GVB Day Ticket or the I amsterdam Card) in the Keukenhof Express?

No, the Keukenhof Express does not accept GVB travel passes. GVB is a transportation operator that serves Amsterdam only. Keukenhof, located in Lisse, is about 25 miles / 40 kilometers from Amsterdam. The Express buses are operated by Arriva, which is separate from GVB.

The only valid passes on these buses are Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket, or OVpay (pay-as-you-go by contactless debit or credit card). However, OVpay is typically more expensive than a combination ticket or the Amsterdam & Region Travel ticket for most people.

Do Keukenhof Express buses stop along the way?

The Keukenhof Express and the transfer coaches are all direct services, meaning they do not make stops between the origin departure point and the Keukenhof. It’s as quick as traveling by car, without the hassle of driving and parking.

Can I visit Keukenhof Gardens directly from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport or Travel to Amsterdam first?

You can go directly from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to the Keukenhof. The Keukenhof Express bus line 858 provides a direct service from the airport to the flower park, making your journey much quicker.

Can I Bring My Pet on the Bus?

Yes, small pets, are allowed on the bus (but not coaches). However, larger dogs might be refused entry if deemed too big. Dogs are required to fit on your lap and must not disrupt other passengers.

The coaches will not allow pets. In the Keukenhof Park itself, dogs are also permitted, but they must be kept on a leash at all times, and only one dog is allowed per person. Dogs are prohibited in indoor areas or restaurants within the park.

The only exception is guide dogs, which are permitted in all areas. It’s also important to remember that you are responsible for cleaning up after your dog.

Can I Travel with Luggage?

While you are technically allowed to bring luggage onto the Keukenhof Express buses, it’s generally not recommended because buses are often crowded. Large luggage items can be deeply uncomfortable to transport, and you might be refused entry if your luggage is too bulky.

A much more comfortable and convenient solution would be to leave your luggage at a luggage locker at Amsterdam Central Station, at your accommodation, or at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport before you head to the park by bus. This way, you can experience the beauty of the flowers without the burden of heavy luggage.

What is the Tulip Festival Amsterdam?

For most people, it’s another way to refer to the Keukenhof.

Beautiful close up of tulip at the Keukenhof indoor display.

With this extensive guide, you’re well-equipped , to make the right choice when visiting the amazingly beautiful gardens. I hope you’ll have an amazing time there no matter what you choose.

It’s such an easy day trip from Amsterdam that a Keukenhof day trip should be on every visitor’s to-do list when visiting the Netherlands during these few weeks in spring. Even though the park is not the same as the large flower fields, it is something different.

These can range from guided tours to access to exclusive areas within the park. I opted for a package that included transportation from Amsterdam, which simplified my travel logistics considerably. For anyone aiming to witness Holland’s floral pride, this step is your first towards a hassle-free and memorable excursion.

Avoid weekends, holidays, and special events when visiting Keukenhof

I had the fortune to journey from Amsterdam to Keukenhof, and it was nothing short of a marvel. However, timing played a crucial role in making this day trip extraordinary. I learned that the best way to experience Keukenhof is by avoiding weekends, holidays, and special events. These times tend to attract larger crowds, making it challenging to fully appreciate the tulip fields’ serene beauty and the meticulously arranged gardens.

Weekdays offer a more intimate setting to wander through the expanse of colors that span Keukenhof’s landscapes. I discovered that visiting on a quiet Tuesday morning, I was able to navigate through the park with ease, enjoying unobstructed views of the tulip fields and accessing Keukenhof tours without the hassle of jostling for space. The tranquility of the park during these off-peak times enriched my experience, allowing me to savor the floral fragrances and picturesque scenes without rush.

Yet, for those with schedules that only permit weekend or holiday visits, all hope is not lost. Planning can significantly enhance your experience even during busier times. I found that purchasing Keukenhof tickets in advance was crucial. Options like Keukenhof ticket and tours from Amsterdam, which provide skip-the-line access and transportation, prove to be invaluable. They saved me time and guaranteed a smoother entry. Additionally, adopting an early bird stance by visiting the park at opening hour or opting for the later hours before closing can help dodge the densest crowds. This strategy enabled me to still capture stunning tulip photographs and delight in the authentic Dutch ambiance of the surrounding tulip fields.

What time does the 858 AMS-Keukenhof Express begin service? What time of day? My flight arrives at 7:30 AM.

In 2019 it used to operate from 08:00 AM. The Keukenhof Express bus schedule for 2020 is not live yet, but I guess it will be something around this time again.

Is Kuekenhof Gardens open in June, 2020? or is the garden only open in April and May?

In 2020 the Keukenhof gardens are open from 21 March to 10 May.

I am not able to purchase the combi-ticket. It keeps stating date not available. Seems like it wants me to buy the Tulip Festival Card.

Hi Ruth, the combi-tickets should become available in the coming weeks.

Hi Ruth, starting from today, the combi-tickets are available for purchase online.

THE COMBI TICKET PRICE TODAY IS 27 OR 32.50 EARO?

The price of the combi ticket depends on your departure location, you can check the prices and book your tickets here .

When you purchase a combi ticket do you need to travel and go to the gardens on the same day or can you travel to and from on different day and visit the gardens on another day?

In general, the ticket is meant to be used for a day trip to Keukenhof. It’s better to ask the service providers (Keukenhof and Arriva ) directly if it will work the way you need it.

When will the new 858 bus schedule be posted for this year?

I’m not sure when (and if) Keukenhof will publish the .pdf brochures with the bus schedules this year. But you can already check it via the 9292.nl travel planner (website or app).

Do you know what time the Express Arriva 852 buses to Keukenhoff start in the morning from Amsterdam Rai station and when they might become available to book?

It is not possible to book Keukenhof express Arriva tickets at the moment, and the timetable for 2022 is also not available yet. More information will follow soon (hopefully in the coming two weeks)!

Good news! The tickets are already available online . As faw as I can see, Arriva buses from Amsterdam RAI start at 07:30 every morning.

If I buy a return ticket can I use it over two days?

Hi Sarah, no, unfortunately not. You have to use your return ticket on the same day.

Hello, I booked a ticket for entrance to the park. I just got the entry but do not have transportation and will need to take the 852 bus, and will be coming from Museumplein. I’m wondering what to do – I can’t figure out how to buy just transportation…Thanks in advance :).

Hello! You can buy a bus only ticket. They are now available online . After you pick the date and time, there will be an option to book Adult (12+) – Day Ticket Bus only . Have a nice visit to Keukenhof!

Is it possible to use the Combi ticket to leave on a different bus than when I arrived? I am leaving from Amsterdam so wanted to purchase the 852 combi ticket, but after the gardens I will go straight to AMS airport for my flight – so would I be able to then take the 858 on return instead of the 852?

Hi Dulchinea, that’s a good question. It was always possible in the prevous years , so I expect that the answer is yes. But I’ll try to find an official proof of information. When I know more, I’ll update this comment.

hi.. is there any update on this? we are planning to request for a different bus coming back.. we take the (our combi-ticket) Amsterdam RAI to Keukonhof.. but we need to be in Leiden after the visit. is it possible to take the Keukenhof express going to Leiden on our return? Thanks a lot!

Yes, it’s possible, no problem!

When I book the Keukenhof combi-tickets, I realized that the return ticket must be used on the same day. We plan to stay in Lisse for a few days. The return time would be the first bus 25.4.2022 from Keukenhf to the Airport. Is this possible on bus line 585? I couldn’t find a bus schedule. When will the buses start in either direction in the morning?

Hi Ene! You’re absolutely right, with a combi-ticket the return ticket must be used on the same day.

You can check the bus schedule here – https://9292.nl/reisadvies There is no schedule for 25 April 2022 yet, but the schedule for Monday 18 April 2022 says that the first Keukenhof Express bus 858 departs from Keukenhof at 08:35. Next buses depart every 10 minutes.

According to the 92929.nl travel planner, there is also a direct Arriva bus 361 from Lisse to Schiphol. It departs starting from 05:12 in the morning. It’s a regular bus, so there you can probably buy a ticket from the driver.

I wish to take the Keukenhof express bus from Leiden central, and then from Keukenhof to Europaplein. Is this possible with an OV chipkaart?

Hi Aurora! Yes, you can travel in both buses with an OV chipkaart. 9292.nl website can show you what your journey will cost.

When will Express bus + Keukenhof admission combo tickets from Leiden be available for the 2023 season?

Hi Bruce! Probably beginning of 2023. We’ll post an update as soon as they are available!

When will combi (Keukenhof entry and bus) tickets be available for purchase?

Hi! We expect them to be available online from February 22, 2023.

I plan on travelling on the Keukenhof Express with an Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. Since you don’t book a seat, what are the chances that the bus will be full?

Hi Anna, it should be OK. There’s no seat reservation at the Keukenhof express, there’s only time-slot booking for the crowd control. With the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket you just stand in queue and enter any bus on the day(s) when your ticket is valid.

Bought a combi ticket for April 2023 can I arrive in keukeoff garden at any time slot with this ticket? Because I rented bikes first upon arrival and was planning on going in park after. Thanks in advance!

Hi Minta! That’s a good question, because according to the rules you have to take a bus within the indicated time-slot. As far as I know there’re no rules when you have to actually enter the park. But to be sure I would contact the official Keukenhof customer support team and ask them if it’s allowed to enter any time.

Hi! As I’m planning to go to Zaanse Schans and use public transportation in Amsterdam, buying an Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket 3 days + Entry ticket to Keukenhof is much cheaper. However, I am worried about not booking a time schedule for the Express Bus to Keukenhof. Do you know if that can be a problem? Also, on the website they say Keukenhof ticket + Keukenhof Express Bus trip from Amsterdam RAI is 36€ and a return trip is 17€. This doesn’t mean I have to buy and schedule the return ticket?

Hi Ines, don’t worry, with the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket can take any Keukenhof Express bus on the day(s) when your ticket is valid.

As for the Keukenhof ticket + Keukenhof Express Bus trip from Amsterdam RAI ticket for €36 – it includes Keukenhof entrance + return bus trip.

The ticket for €17 is a return bus ticket (for those who already have a Keukenhof entrance ticket).

Thank you very much! Your website is super useful! By the way, do you know at what time is the last bus from Keukenhof to Amsterdam? Is usually at the closing time or we need to leave earlier?

I know that last year the last departure time for the bus line 852 to Amsterdam was 19:55. I haven’t seen the bus schedule for 2023 yet. But hopefully it will be available on 9292.nl (the Dutch travel planner website) soon.

I am planning to purchase the Express Bus ticket from RAI and Garden Admission (36Euro) Does this include the return trip….or is that purchased separately? I’m a bit confused.

Hi Cindy, yes, it includes a return trip!

I can’t seem to be able to purchase the combi tickets online . It is saying that it is not available. Are they all sold out? What is the alternative way? Thanks!

Hi Irene! No, don’t worry, they are not sold out. Probably there’s a technical issue. They should be available in the coming days.

Hi, I am just wondering how strict the rules are around dogs on the Keukenhof Express? I noticed it only mentions small dogs but we are really hoping we could bring a well behaved Labradoodle. Thanks!

These are the rules from the Arriva (operating bus company) website:

Travelling with pets

Small pets carried in a bag or basket can travel free of charge on trains and buses. Dogs are allowed on public transport, but the following rules apply:

– Dogs can travel free of charge on buses but must be kept on a short leash. – Dogs can travel free of charge on trains if they are carried on a passenger’s lap. – To take a larger dog on the train, you need to purchase an NS Dagkaart Hond dog day ticket. – The dog must not occupy a seat on the train or disturb other passengers. – Harnessed guide dogs travel free.

The rest I think depends on the driver and on how crowded it is in the bus.

I don’t have personal experience with dogs in the bus. But hope this helps!

Hello, do 2 year olds also need a ticket on the Keukenhof express bus? The website just asks to select number of tickets it does not specify adults or children.

Hi! What website are you checking? Here you can select adult, kids or infant ticket (for 0 euro). But in general kids under 4 don’t need a ticket in public transport in the Netherlands.

trip from amsterdam to keukenhof

I have purchased a combi-ticket for bus+entrance and had to choose an arrival time. I cannot see how to book the Express bus from Schiphol. Questions/responses on the Keukenhof site and email to not answer my question. Also I cannot find the stops for the 397 bus going to Schiphol on a map. We are staying near the Rijksmuseum. Thank you

Hi Trish, When you buy a combi-ticket, you choose the departure time from the selected locaiton. So you don’t need to book anything extra for bus from Schiphol. That’s what Keukenhof website says:

With a combi-ticket you only reserve the departure time for the outward journey with the Keukenhof Express bus, not the arrival time slot for your entrance at Keukenhof or your return journey.

As for the bus stop – bus line 397 stops near Concertgebouw (this stop https://maps.app.goo.gl/o1imJShS1nMntni77?g_st=ig OR the other side of the street – please check on the spot). I would also recommend you to download Glimble app – it shows all travel directions (including walking routes to the closest bus stop).

Enjoy your visit to Keukenhof!

Hi, I bought entrance tickets for 2adults and 1child. As we will use ARTT for 2 adults, so the transport to Keukenhof is included. But for child, we forgot to buy her express bus tickets with entrance ticket. Can we buy express bus ticket round trip separately for a child and the fare? Thanks!

Hi! I’ve checked several websites that sell tickets, including Keukenhof official website, Arriva (bus company) website and app. But unfortunately I don’t see kids bus-only tickets. They all sell only adult bus tickets. Can that be an option? Or maybe you can contact Arriva customer service and ask for solution? Good luck and have a nice trip to Keukenhof!

Hi, i would like to ask if I miss my departure of the express time will I still be able to take the next bus? Thank you.

Hi Jason, yes, you can also take a later bus to Keukenhof.

Is it possible to take Keukenhof express bus with a larger dog, for instance, a Labrador?

Hi! Please check my reply above https://holland-explorer.com/keukenhof-express/#comment-55565

It’s better to contact Arriva (bus operating company) if you want to know for sure.

are small mobility scooters allowed on the 852 or is there a luggage compartment that they can be put in

Unfortunately, mobility scooters are not allowed on Arriva buses https://www.arriva.nl/consumers/service-contact/i-have-a-question/traveling-with-a-disability.htm

Hi there. Is it possible to catch the Keukenhof bus with our regular OV chip cards and just buy the Keukenhof entrance tickets, or do we need to buy the tickets that include the bus tickets?

Hi Katie, it’s possible to use regular OV chip cards in the Keukenhof bus.

Hello! I bought combi tickets with the bus departure from the RAI location, but our accommodations changed and it would now be much easier for me to travel from the schipol airport bus line. Do you know if I can use my combi ticket at a different bus departure location than the one I originally selected?

Hi! Honestly, I don’t know. My guess is that it’s possible, because it’s the same company (Arriva) and the ticket from Amsterdam is even more expensive than from Schiphol. But it’s better to double check it with Arriva, or your tickets provider, directly.

Hi, If I go to Keukenhoof from Amsterdam RAI using ARTT and from Keukenhoof I plan to go to Leiden, can I buy an express bus ticket to Leiden in Keukenhoof or on the bus?

Hi Ronny, I’m terribly sorry for the late reply. But better late then never…

Yes, you can buy a single Keukenhof Express bus ticket from Keukenhof to Leiden. It costs € 6 and available online at the bus company webshop – https://ticket.arriva.nl/en-US/keukenhof

The timings written on the combi ticket are the departure time of the bus or the entry time in Keukenhof gardens? Thanks in advance.

Many regards Rohit

These are departure times of the bus. You can take a bus departing 30 minutes before and 60 minutes after the chosen timeslot.

Have a nice visit to Keukenhof!

Hi there! We will be travelling to Keukenhof from the airport as soon as we arrive to the Netherlands. I booked the tickets , but I’m not sure if we will be in time. If we arrive later, can we still take the bus to Keukenhof?

Hi Milena! No worries, the ticket is valid all day, so you can just take a bus later.

Hi, there!! Is it possible to get the refound of the tickets? I had a health problem and I cannot go to Amsterdam anymore. Thanks!

Hi Ricardo!

Please contact the online tickets office/ website where you’re purchased the tickets. Most of the websites selling Keukenhof tickets allow cancellation until 96 hours before your visit date. They can arrange cancellation and refund for you.

Get well soon!

The best way to get from Amsterdam to Keukenhof will depend on your plans and what makes you feel most comfortable.

You can purchase a Combi Ticket directly from the Keukenhof website if you don’t want to go through a third party. This ticket covers return bus fare and skip the line entrance. The Keukenhof website states these will become available again in February. Until then, you can still purchase entrance only tickets. However, some people prefer the comfort of traveling with a group or via a reputable company. I will explain each option so that you can choose the best way for you to get from Amsterdam to Keukenhof depending on your travel plans.

Amsterdam to Keukenhof by Car

If you are traveling by car, the journey to Keukenhof from Amsterdam City Centre is approximately 40 minutes. Amsterdam Schiphol will be your halfway point. Once beyond Schiphol Airport, you will travel for approximately 20 minutes. Be sure to plug in the address to your preferred navigation app for proper and up to date directions. Typing “Keukenhof” into you map should be enough to pull up the location; however, the exact address of Keukenhof Gardens is as follows:

Stationsweg 166a 2161 AM Lisse The Netherlands

Daily parking at Keukenhof Gardens is €6. The parking lot closes one hour after park closure. You can pay for parking with your ticket in advance. I will explain that further throughout the post and you can find the link to purchase Keukenhof tickets at the bottom of this post.

Amsterdam to Keukenhof via Public Transportation

If you opt for public transportation, you will pick up the Keukenhof Express Bus 858 at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. So, if you’re staying in Amsterdam, you will need to first take the train from Amsterdam Central Station to Amsterdam Schiphol. Once you arrive, you will find the bus station just in front as you exit from Schiphol Plaza from Arrivals Hall 4. The Keukenhof Express bus runs annually with the Keukenhof Gardens schedule. In 2023, the Keukenhof Express (again, bus 858) will operate from March 23 to May 14. There are other buses you can ride from Amsterdam but using the Keukenhof Express bus is definitely the most straightforward process.

Keep time a consideration. Plan to arrive 30 minutes to an hour early due to the long line of other travelers making their way to see those incredible Keukenhof tulip gardens. You will have the best luck with the bus line early in the morning. The biggest advantage to arriving at the park as soon as it opens is there will be fewer people during the early hours. Tour group buses will begin to arrive later in the morning bringing in crowds of tourists on a day trip. The early morning is also one of the best times to capture beautiful Keukenhof photos with the glow of the morning sun.

Amsterdam to Keukenhof by Taxi

Traveling from Amsterdam to Keukenhof by taxi is by far the costliest way to visit. Expect to pay upwards of €50 from Schiphol or close to €100 for a one-way trip from Amsterdam Central. You could also try finding a lower fare for car service through uber.

*amount varies by location

Book a Tour from Amsterdam to Keukenhof

If group tours are more your style, there are a variety of options available. For me, this is the easiest and best way to get from Amsterdam to Keukenhof. The benefits of a tour include a meeting place, scheduled times, and the ability to combine other activities in a structured environment. For example, if you would like to visit other tulip fields near Amsterdam, there are tours that include this. For example, this keukenhof tour includes a trip to a tulip farm while this one includes a windmill village guided tour .

The advantages of visiting Keukenhof Gardens with a tour group are also disadvantages if you prefer more freedom. Scheduled times means limited time in the gardens. Two to three hours may seem like plenty, but Keukenhof is an expansive park where you can easily spend an entire day wandering, sitting, playing, and marveling.

In addition to the extensive garden property, there are a variety of activities in and around Keukenhof that may be of interest. Some examples include boat rides around the park and renting a bicycle (just outside of Keukenhof Gardens) to explore the village of Lisse. If this is the case, a tour may not be the best option for you. Then again, you may find a tour that encompasses all your interests for the day. Either way, here are a few excellent tour options to consider for your trip.

Choosing the Best Time to Visit Keukenhof Gardens

The best time to visit Keukenhof is typically the end of March through mid-May when the park opens to the public. The length of winter weather will determine the best time to actually plan your visit. Since this can be hard when planning a trip from abroad, such as from the United States, it is best to aim for mid to late April. This will give you the best chance to see the most flowers in bloom. In addition to Keukenhof, there are also lots of other ways to enjoy tulips in Amsterdam.

The great thing about Keukenhof is that the gardens are continuously blooming with tulips and other flowers once the season starts. What you see one week will be entirely different than another week! You can check the weekly flower update on the Tulips of Holland website. My last visit was during the third week of April and, while many flowers had not yet bloomed due the long winter, many had also come and gone. Despite this, there were still more flowers than you can imagine. I spent four amazing hours in the gardens and still didn’t see all of the gardens within Keukenhof.

Keukenhof Gardens 2023 Dates and Hours

Dates: March 23 through May 14

Hours: 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM

When NOT to Visit Keukenhof

There are many flower parades and festivals throughout Holland each year, but the largest and most popular event falls in mid to late April. This particular flower parade, or Bloemencorso, passes Keukenhof as it travels more than 42 kilometers from Noordwijk to Haarlem through the tulip fields of Lisse. A premier spot to view the parade is Keukenhof Boulevard just in front of Keukenhof Gardens. While the Dutch flower parade is an amazing experience in itself, it makes for a very busy day at Keukenhof Gardens as many viewers combine these activities.

If you don’t mind heavier than normal crowds, you may still enjoy your day. Otherwise, I recommend visiting Keukenhof at a different time. This year the Dutch Flower Parade falls on April 22 and begins at 9:00 AM in Noordwijk. It ends at approximately 9:30 PM in Haarlem. The flower parade is expected to reach Keukenhof around 3:30 in the afternoon.

How Long to Spend at Keukenhof Gardens

Determining how long to spend at Keukenhof Gardens is totally up to you. I love flowers and could absolutely spend an entire day here! If you’re hungry, there are restaurants (albeit expensive) and if you need to relax you can take a break on a bench or even on the grass. It isn’t unusual to see folks catching a quick nap or reading a book on the lawn. Alternatively, you can enjoy cruising the grounds on a boat. Spaces for that fill up fast though so sign up as soon as you enter the park!

Perhaps you’re on a tight schedule or you don’t enjoy such a long time in a park. In this case, I would say to allow yourself no less than two hours to explore. This means, if you are traveling from Amsterdam to Keukenhof, you will want to devote at least half of a day once you consider travel time. Whether you opt for a group tour or go on your own, a time block of six hours is appropriate.

Purchasing Keukenhof Tickets

It is important that you purchase your Keukenhof tickets online in advance of your trip. There are several ticket options to choose from. I will explain each option so you can easily understand which choice would be the best for your particular travel plans. In the past, tickets were not linked to a specific time and date. However, you must now select a day and timeslot. Since Keukenhof is so popular and dates are likely to sell out, it is essential that you book your tickets as early as possible. I have included a link near the bottom to purchase your Keukenhof tickets directly from the website.

Note: Once the purchase of your tickets to Keukenhof is complete, they are non-refundable.

If You’re Traveling by Car or Taxi…

If you are driving yourself, you will need to purchase Keukenhof entrance tickets as well as a parking ticket. Currently (as of 2023), the Keukenhof entrance ticket for adults is €19, children 4-17 are €9, and children 0-3 are free. If your group is twenty or more, you can receive a special rate of €18,5 per person. After you select the appropriate number for each adult and child ticket, you will need to select to add a parking ticket. You will need one ticket per vehicle. It is worth noting that Keukenhof does have designated parking for motorhomes; however, they do not allow overnight parking. The parking lot closes one hour after park closure.

If You’re Traveling by Public Transportation…

If you would like to travel to Keukenhof via public transportation and you’re purchasing direct, the best option is to select the Combi Ticket. These should become available in February with updated pricing. This option includes a skip the line entrance ticket to Keukenhof as well as a return ticket to Schiphol on the Keukenhof Express bus. There are no stops or bus changes involved. You can also book the Keukenhof Combi Ticket if you are traveling to Keukenhof from Harlem (bus line 50, Hoofddorp (bus line 859), or Leiden (bus line 854). You should verify the bus line for your specific place of departure while planning.

Alternatively, you can book this super easy transfer (to and from) plus skip the line ticket from Get Your Guide for about the same price that leaves from a location near Central Station. You’ll have the same benefits of exploring at your own pace with less to worry about. The difference is that using the combi ticket, you will need to take the train back to Schiphol to catch the bus. With the GYG ticket , you will leave from a meeting point near Amsterdam Central Station.

Need More Amsterdam Ideas?

If you’re looking for more day trips from Amsterdam, consider Bruges! Bruges is small but incredible medieval town just across the border of Belgium. I highly recommend spending a night or two to experience its magic. Here are some fun ways you can spend 24 hours in Bruges . One of my favorite reasons is chocolate!

Tulips from (just outside) Amsterdam: Add Keukenhof to your spring travel bucket list

If springtime flowers fill you with joy, there is one place in Europe which is an absolute must: Keukenhof.

Close to the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, you’ll find vast gardens filled with a staggering seven million - mostly tulip - bulbs.

The Lisse-based floral exhibition is set on 32 hectares (or 79 acres) of land and each bulb is painstakingly planted by one of Keukenhof’s 40 gardeners.

2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the glorious garden. Here’s everything you need to know about it - and how to make a floral visit a reality, when it officially opens on 21 March.

A brief history of Keukenhof garden

The doors to Keukenhof - also known as the Garden of Europe - opened on 21 March 1949.

Established that year by a consortium of bulb growers and flower exporters, it was initially set up to showcase products and support the Netherlands’ export industry.

The following year, the garden opened to the public and was an immediate success, welcoming 200,000 visitors in its first season.

Situated in the municipality of Lisse, just south-west of Amsterdam , it’s now known as one of the world's largest flower gardens.

It dates back to 1638, when Adriaen Maertensz Block, captain and governor of the Dutch East India Company, bought the land and built a large manor house called Castle Keukenhof.

In 1857, then-owners Baron and Baroness Van Pallandt tasked landscape architect Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher - both designers of Amsterdam's Vondelpark - to restructure the park and grounds around the building.

Those designs, in typical English style, still form the basis of the modern day Keukenhof gardens.

Here’s what to expect during a visit to Keukenhof

While the gardens are no less than a cultural phenomenon, especially for the huge amount of tulips on display, you won’t just see these beautiful spring flowers.

Around 600 growers and trading companies supply their best flowers, shrubs and trees for the show, which runs for around eight weeks a year.

Expect to catch glimpses of the likes of roses and orchids as well as 800 different varieties of tulips and some of the best cherry blossoms in the whole country.

Different species are given their own spaces to showcase their unique charms.

Among the many themed pavilions, you’ll come across the Beatrix - named after the former queen of the Netherlands - where you’ll find orchids and anthurium. The nearby Oranje Nassau pavilion showcases the best roses, chrysanthemums and daffodils.

There does seem to be something for everyone, even for the smallest visitors.

Aside from millions of flowers, there’s a children’s maze as well as a scavenger hunt, petting zoo and a playground themed around Miffy , the Dutch rabbit icon.

You can also delve into the history of Keukenhof, with a visit to the park’s famous windmill, which was built in Groningen in 1892 and formerly used as a pumping mill.

Also on show are authentic 16th and 17th-century tulip varieties which serve to illustrate the development of more than 400 years of bulb growing in the Netherlands .

Dotted around the gardens, you’ll also stumble across around 100 individual sculptures showcasing a wide variety of artistic styles.

The entire venue is an artist’s dream, especially if you’re into photography. The flowers - in every tone imaginable - pop up every year across social media, drawing people in with their veritable riot of colour.

How to make the most of your visit to Keukenhof

Since its foundation, Keukenhof has unsurprisingly been exceptionally popular as a destination.

However, due to its vast size, Keukenhof doesn’t feel overwhelmingly busy. Nevertheless, we’d advise a little planning ahead before your tiptoe through the tulips.

If you’re travelling to the Netherlands purely to visit Keukenhof, we would recommend staying in nearby Lisse and catching a local bus.

Starting in Amsterdam? You’ll want to hop on the metro and get off at the Europaplein stop. From there, climb onboard the 852 bus - otherwise known as the Keukenhof Express. It runs up to ten times an hour and takes just over 30 minutes to reach the garden. You’ll need to take the 858 bus if you’re going straight to Keukenhof from Schiphol Airport; the journey takes half an hour and runs frequently.

No matter how long your trip is, it’s not a visit to the Netherlands with a boat or bicycle ride. Luckily, there are a variety of bicycle tours you can take around Keukenhof and if water is more your thing, you’re in luck.

Electrically powered boats cruise the channels between the bulb fields around Keukenhof, meaning you can take in the rainbow of flowers in a super relaxed way.

Keukenhof is open from 21 March to 12 May 2024.

The top 10 things to do in the Netherlands

The Netherlands packs so much within its compact borders – from its grand cities to green spaces, picturesque waterways and miles of coastline – that it’s easy to take in numerous unique and memorable experiences throughout the country, even on a short trip.

Here are 10 of the very best things to do on your Dutch travels.

Canals of Amsterdam full of people celebrating King's day with many on boats

1. Captain an electric boat to explore Amsterdam’s canals

Renting a boat for a few hours lets you navigate Amsterdam ’s watery landscape at your own pace. In the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed canal ring and surrounding waterways (such as the Amstel river, which gave Amsterdam its name), you can glide past landmarks like the Westerkerk’s belltower, near the Anne Frank Huis, pretty bridges, photogenic canal houses containing charming shops, cozy restaurants and museums, and regenerating docklands. Pick a fine day, pack a picnic from Amsterdam’s street markets and set sail.

Planning tip: Electric boats are free from emissions and noise, and don’t need a boat license or experience (instruction is given at pick up). Book with companies such as Boaty or Eco Boats Amsterdam .

Save these tips on the best free things to do in Amsterdam to take your euros further.

2. View Van Gogh masterpieces in the Hoge Veluwe National Park

A wonderland of pine forests, heath, grassland and sand drifts, roamed by red and roe deer, mouflon and wild boar, the 135-acre (55 sq km) Hoge Veluwe National Park is laced with hiking and biking trails. Amid the trees at the park’s heart, the astonishing Kröller-Müller Museum holds the greatest collection of Van Gogh’s works outside Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, including masterpieces like The Potato Eaters,  and more by Monet, Renoir, Seurat, Picasso and Mondriaan, among others. Outside, some 160 sculptures by such luminaries as Rodin, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth grace its gardens.

Near the lake at the park’s northern edge, the splendid 1920-completed residence of the founders, Helene Kröller-Müller and her husband Anton, Jachthuis Sint Hubertus , also welcomes visitors.

Planning tip: You’ll need to buy national park tickets in advance or at park entrances. Time-slot tickets for the Kröller-Müller Museum and guided tours of Jachthuis Sint Hubertus must be pre-booked online.

A young woman walks across the mudflats of the Waddensea at low tide, The Netherlands

3. Mudwalk on the Wadden Sea

Slogging through gluggy mud might not immediately appeal but wadlopen (“mudwalking”) across vast mudflats, with crabs, clams and cockles underfoot and gulls cawing overhead, is an unforgettable, often mesmerizing, at-one-with-nature experience. At low tide, the Wadden Sea, the world’s largest unbroken intertidal zone, retreats to reveal the seafloor; it’s possible to reach the Frisian islands of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog (shorter, easier treks are available).

Planning tip: On the mainland, north of Groningen, Pieterburen is a prime wadlopen base. It’s vital to go with a trained guide and wear clothing appropriate for the season (many places rent footwear so you don’t damage your own).

4. Visit fairytale medieval castle Muiderslot

Looking like it’s been lifted from the pages of a storybook, with its turreted round towers and surrounding moat, Muiderslot was the 13th-century creation of Count Floris V. Its fortifications were added in the 17th century, ensconcing its flourishing gardens, with a beech alley, kitchen and herb gardens and plum orchard commissioned by its then owner, the historian, poet and playwright PC Hooft, who hosted leading writers, artists and scientists here. Following its renovation by architect Pierre Cuypers (of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum and Centraal Station fame), it’s been a national museum since 1878. Themed audio tours bring the castle’s centuries of history to life. Beyond the ramparts, boats fill the pretty pleasure port of Muiden, lined with waterside cafes.

Planning tip: From April to October, a fun way to travel here is by ferry from Amsterdam’s reclaimed island neighborhood of IJburg. During the same months, ferries also run to the late 19th-century UNESCO-listed fortress island of Pampus .

5. Taste Trappist beer and tour the abbey where it’s made near Tilburg

Trappist brewing secrets are normally closely guarded but   a visit to La Trappe gives you a rare chance to go behind the scenes. In a beautiful and serene pastoral setting on the outskirts of Tilburg in the Netherlands’ southeast, monks have been brewing since 1884 at Koningshoeven Abbey. On a guided tour, you’ll see the brewing process and abbey buildings, and taste its divine ales.

Keukenhof or Kitchen garden, also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world's largest flower gardens. Famous for its tulips

6. Cycle through tulip fields in the Bollenstreek

All your senses come alive as you pedal past fields of vibrantly colored flowers in the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region) along the 21-mile (35km) Bloemenroute. Cycling this fragrant "Flower Route" takes around two to three hours. In spring you’ll see the Netherlands’ famous tulips and other flowers like jonquils and daffodils, while dahlias and sunflowers are among the floral spectacle in summer.

Bollenstreek highlights include Lisse’s intriguing Museum De Zwarte Tulp (Museum of the Black Tulip) and magnificent Keukenhof Gardens , and nearby flower farm De Tulperij in Voorhout.

Planning tip: Leiden makes an ideal base for forays through the tulips, with plenty of places to rent wheels in the city (and region-wide). Downloadable route maps highlight which flowers are in bloom in season.

Lonely Planet's Brian Healy shares his top tulip-viewing tips from a recent trip.

7. Step inside a museum storage facility in Rotterdam

Rotterdam ’s foremost art institution the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen might be closed for renovations until 2029 but it’s still possible to see its exceptional collections. The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen , in a giant bowl-shaped building covered by 1,664 reflective glass panels, is the storage facility of the entire, 154,000-piece collection. And, in a world first, the public can view its cache of paintings, sculptures and photography in climate-controlled compartments. The building’s tree-topped roof terrace has panoramic views over the striking contemporary skyline of Netherlands’ second-largest city.

Detour: Other venues to see art in the city include the Kunsthal, with changing exhibitions, and TENT and Kunstinstituut Melly, showcasing contemporary works. Serious art lovers should also check out the royal collection at Den Haag’s Mauritshuis, an easy 15 miles north of Rotterdam.

Mother and children ride bicyles past windmills at Kinderdijk.

8. Wander past windmills at Kinderdijk

Windmills are a classic fixture of the Dutch landscape, with some 1200 traditional spinners dotted across the countryside. At UNESCO World Heritage site Kinderdijk , 15 miles southeast of Rotterdam, 19 historic brick and timber mills still in operating condition rise above the peaceful waterways and polders (areas of drained land). You can meander (on foot or by bicycle) along the canals’ towpaths, visit museums and take a boat ride beneath the mills’ creaking sails.

Detour: Around 20 miles north of Amsterdam, windmill-filled Zaanse Schans is a working, inhabited village with quaint shops, traditional crafts and millers on hand to explain how windmills work.

Who needs to road trip when you can cycle? Here and the top 11 cycling routes in the Netherlands.

9. Delve into underground caves and passages in Maastricht

To understand the multilayered backstory of spirited southeastern city Maastricht , start by surveying the landscape from lofty Fort Sint Pieter. This hulking 1701-built defensive fortress sits within a deep-cut dry moat. Stroll the surrounding paths, then take a subterranean tour of the city’s honeycomb of caves and passages with Maastricht Underground to uncover the city’s Roman, Napoleonic and WWII history.

Netherlands, Edam town, female , young lady on bicycle riding near shops. on right of image a cheese shop display.

10. Eat cheese in Edam

Edam is synonymous with its round, red-rind, mild cows-milk cheese and the town has plenty of opportunities to indulge at restaurants, aromatic shops (Henri Willig occupies a 16th-century building) and, most atmospherically, its cheese market – held on Wednesday mornings in summer – when costumed locals enthusiastically recreate the trading of a bygone era and you can buy cheeses produced on local farms.

Cheese aside, Edam is a charming place to stroll the narrow streets lined with historic recalling its prosperous ship-building heritage and cruise its picturesque waterways.

Planning tip: Edam makes an easy and enjoyable 14-mile (22km) bike ride north of Amsterdam.

1) Although clearly many flowers were past their peak (and much of that planned) I felt there were still lots of beautiful flowers to see (not just tulips but others as well)

2) The gardens were much bigger than I had thought and we ended up staying for 4 leisurely hours (also helped the weather was spectacular and we had allocated the entire day so no reason to rush) - recommend also checking out the 75th anniversary pavilion

3) We were a bit worried about the timing and wanted flexibility since (had just landed the day before and we weren’t sure how tired we would be, and it had initially looked like rain in the morning) so we emailed with Keukenhof ahead of time and they told us the combo ticket was good all day, regardless of the time on the ticket - so we booked for 8am and actually went at 11:30 am

4) The line for the bus at RAI looked much worse than it was - there were about 150 in line when we got there but we only waited 10 min. They fill up one bus and have another waiting right behind it and then again another after that

5) Overall I would say it was fantastic!

The best time to visit Amsterdam

By Arundhati Ail

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Canoe Canoeing Leisure Activities Person Rowboat Sport and Water

Amsterdam’s charming neighbourhoods with bright facades, sloping roofs, iconic canals and remarkable museums are a natural draw for tourists. The Netherlands capital is an impressive hub for design, perfect for art buffs who want a vacation filled with gallery-hopping, Dutch pancakes and stroopwafels with scenic views . The weather can be tricky to plan for, with bursts of rainfall in summer and a deep winter season. But we’ve got you covered. Here’s a handy guide on the best time to visit Amsterdam, so you can make the most of this fascinating destination.

Jump to: What is the best time to visit Amsterdam? Temperature throughout the year in Amsterdam When can you see tulips in Amsterdam? What is the cheapest time to visit Amsterdam? How many days are enough for an Amsterdam trip?

What is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

Amsterdam's Damrak neighbourhood

Like most European cities, the best time to visit Amsterdam is in the summer, between June and September. This is peak tourist season in Amsterdam, so brace for crowds . Summer is marked by pleasant weather and sunny days, with occasional rainfall. This is when locals are out and about, lounging on beaches like Zandvoort, surfing at Wijk Aan Zee or taking a dip in Buitenzwembad Marineterrein, a canal next to the Maritime Museum. Summer is also the time for several festivals and outdoor events in Amsterdam, like the Luminosity Beach Festival in June—a music fest on the shores of Bloemendaal aan Zee— Aalsmeer Flower Festival in June, Amsterdam Pride in July and Lowlands Festival in Biddinghuizen near Amsterdam in August.

Temperature throughout the year in Amsterdam

November to February: 0ºC-10ºC March to May: 2ºC-18ºC June to August: 11ºC-22ºC September to October: 7ºC-14ºC

When can you see tulips in Amsterdam?

Image may contain Flower Petal Plant Outdoors Machine Motor Field Engine Nature Tulip and Spring

Tulip season in Amsterdam runs from mid-March or April to early May. This is also a great time to visit, and is a popular window for tourists who want to catch a glimpse of the blooms before they’re gone. During this time, large swathes at the Amsterdam Tulip Museum are painted in bright red, yellow and purple with tulips of different kinds—some 16-20” high, yellow Darwin Hybrids and even the unique deep purple Queen of the Night. Inside the museum, you can also find tulip-themed furniture, bags and knick-knacks. There’s also the famous Bloemenmarkt, a floating flower market on the Singel canal, where you can get yourself a bright bouquet of tulips and daffodils, as well as souvenirs. Other places to see tulips include Keukenhof, about a 40-minute drive from Amsterdam, which has almost 80 acres of tulip fields, and Museum de Zwarte Tulp just beyond Keukenhof, where you can enjoy walking or cycling tours of the tulip gardens.

What is the cheapest time to visit Amsterdam?

November, January and February are low-season months in Amsterdam. If you’re willing to brave the cold weather (temperatures drop to 0ºC during this time), you can make the most of relatively lower flight and accommodation costs. You’re also likely to encounter fewer crowds and easier tickets for Amsterdam’s major attractions, like the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. Just make sure to brace for the cold and pack ample layers.

How many days are enough for an Amsterdam trip?

Four to five full days are good for a first trip to Amsterdam. This will give you enough time to explore major attractions like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Museum, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Vondelpark and the NEMO Science Museum. Book your tickets to museums in advance so you can space out your visits and squeeze in walks in trendy neighbourhoods like Jordaan for shopping and pubs, and drop in at Amsterdam’s many coffee shops (though there have been orders during the past few years for cannabis coffee shops to not advertise to tourists). If you want to enjoy day trips to cities close to Amsterdam, like Keukenhof, Bruges in Belgium and Rotterdam, a week-long trip should suffice.

On Saturday, Taapsee shared some more pictures from her travel bucket. Taapsee Pannu tagged her sisters Shagun and Evania Pannu and she captioned the post, "My kind of Amsterdam. Canal, cycling and sibling...." Take a look:

In March, Taapsee Pannu married her long-time boyfriend Mathias Boe in Udaipur in the presence of family and friends. The guests at Taapsee's Udaipur wedding included her Thappad co-star Pavail Gulati, Abhilash Thapliyal (actor of Aspirants) and writer Kanika Dhillon. Badminton players Satwiksai Raj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, coached by Mathais Boe, were also among the attendees. The wedding was organised by The Wedding Factory, an event management company owned by Taapsee's sister Shagun Pannu and Farah Sood.

Taapsee didn't post any wedding picture or video on her social media feed. However, videos from her bridal entry to sangeet went crazy viral. In her wedding video, Taapsee Pannu, dressed as a traditional Punjabi bride, can be seen dancing her heart out during her entry. Taapsee can be seen sporting kaleeras and choodas. As soon as she reaches the stage, groom Mathias Boe can be seen hugging her. Mathias Boe, whose face is covered with a sehera, can be seen dressed in a traditional outfit. The video also documents moments from their garlands exchange ceremony. Mathias can be seen kissing Taapsee on her cheeks. Take a look here:
