Shore jigging: a step-by-step guide to mastering this accessible technique.
Introduction
Welcome to our first post in the series exploring the exciting world of jigging! Today, we will focus on shore jigging, a popular and accessible technique for anglers who enjoy fishing from land or lack access to a boat. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner, this comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge and skills to master shore jigging and increase your chances of success on the water.
What is Shore Jigging?
Shore jigging is a versatile fishing technique that involves casting jigs or lures from the shoreline or other land-based structures, such as piers or jetties. By working the jig through the water column, anglers can target a wide range of species, from bottom-dwelling fish to fast-moving pelagic predators.
Key Equipment for Shore Jigging
- Rod: A long, medium to heavy action rod (9-12 feet) with a strong backbone and a sensitive tip is ideal for shore jigging. The longer length allows for longer casting distances and better control of the jig.
- Reel: A high-quality spinning reel with a strong drag system and a high line capacity is essential for shore jigging. The reel should be able to handle braided lines and resist corrosion from saltwater exposure.
- Line: Braided line (20-50 lb test) is recommended for its low stretch, high sensitivity, and superior casting distance. Attach a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader (20-40 lb test) to reduce visibility and provide some abrasion resistance near the jig.
- Jigs: A variety of jigs in different shapes, sizes, and colors should be available to adapt to various fishing conditions and target species.
- Cast: Aim for a long, accurate cast to reach distant structures or drop-offs where fish may be holding.
- Retrieve: Work the jig through the water column using a combination of rod movements and reel retrieves. Vary the speed and action to find the most effective presentation for the target species.
- Detecting Strikes: Pay close attention to the line and rod tip for any signs of a strike. Strikes may be subtle or aggressive, depending on the species and conditions.
Target Species for Shore Jigging
Shore jigging can be effective for targeting a wide range of fish species, including:
- Scouting: Spend some time scouting the shoreline to identify potential fish-holding structures or features, such as rocky points, drop-offs, or weed beds.
- Timing: Fish are often more active during low light conditions, such as early morning, late afternoon, or during overcast days. Consider planning your shore jigging outings around these times.
- Experiment: Don't be afraid to experiment with different jigs, retrieve styles, and locations. Adaptability is key to success in shore jigging.
Shore jigging is an enjoyable and accessible technique for anglers of all skill levels. By understanding the key equipment, techniques, and target species, you can refine your skills and enhance your success in this exciting style of fishing. Stay tuned for our next post in the jigging series, where we will explore the world of micro jigging!

- SHORE JIGGING
Just Before the thunderstorm...
Shore jigging fishing is an exhilarating form of angling that allows beginners to explore coastal waters and experience the thrill of hooking into powerful and feisty fish species. Whether you’re a newbie to the world of fishing or have some experience but are new to shore jigging, this guide will help you get started and improve your chances of success. Shore jigging offers an opportunity to catch a variety of saltwater species, including snapper, tuna, grouper, barracuda, bonito, and more. Let’s dive into the basics of shore jigging fishing for beginners.
Understanding Shore Jigging
Shore jigging is a method of fishing where anglers cast and jig as they retrieve, artificial lures (jigs) to mimic prey and entice predatory fish. It is particularly popular in coastal areas where fish tend to gather near rocky outcrops, piers, or jetties. The technique involves targeting various depths and working the lure in a manner that imitates wounded or fleeing prey. The jigging action is highly irritating for predatory fish and there is the secret of success. Here are the essential steps for beginners:
- Rod : A medium to heavy Shore Jigging rod, between and 9.2 to 10 feet in length is ideal for shore jigging. Ideal rods for beginners should not be over 100gr. Ideally 30-100gr like the SGS2 Shore Jigging 10’ MH 30-100gr are excellent, effective and provide minimum fatigue to the new angler as he explores the rocky coastline. Look for a sensitive tip and a sturdy backbone to handle the fight when you hook a big fish.
- Reel : Choose a high-capacity spinning reel with a smooth drag system. A reel designed for saltwater fishing is preferable due to its durability. Ideally no bigger reels than 6000 size. But reels should be durable in order to withstand the “aggressive” nature of this fishing style. A good example of reel for beginners that can last long and doesn’t cost much is Penn Slammer IV 4500.
- Braid and leader
- You don’t need to use more than PE 2.5 braid at the beginning of your shore jigging career, especially if you choose the above rod and reel. Use a trustworthy 8 carrier braid for less noise during jigging. Fish can hear!
- A fluorocarbon leader is recommended to make your line less visible to fish. You need to use a hard type FC leader to be able to withstand some serious scratches on the rocks. Savage Gear Super Hard FC Leader is an excellent choice! Make sure you use at least 2.5 meter leader and no more than 0.55mm for the above gear.
- Choosing the Right Jigs:
- Jigs come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. The selection depends on the fish species you’re targeting and the water conditions. Jigs that are very “amateur user friendly” are: Sardine Slider, Needle Jig and Slim Jig Minnow.
- Natural colors are often effective for attracting fish in clear waters, while brightly colored jigs work well in murkier conditions.
3. Choosing the Right Assist Hooks:
You dont want to have your first strike and lose the fish, right? Make sure you are using appropriate assist hooks on your jigs! Your Assist hooks shoudl be very sharp, strong and saltwater resistant. Make sure that they do not “grab” and stick” on the jig during jigging. Bloody Assist Hooks are PERFECT for any jig!
4. Tying the Right Knots:
Use strong knots like the MV knot or PR knot to secure the jig to your line and the leader to your mainline.
- MV knot video here https://youtu.be/vra0VkiLYlk
- Improved Tony Pena knot video here https://youtu.be/-aeYD_Sca_w
5. Casting and Retrieving:
When casting, aim to land your jig close to the target area, a rocky fall, a structure, or a rip current.
After the cast, let your jig sink to the desired depth, and then begin the jigging retrieve.
Experiment with different jigging techniques like a fast, erratic retrieve or a slow, fluttering one to entice strikes. Usually fast jigging respond better to pelagic fishing like amberjacks, bonitos, tunas and albacores, while slower tempo is better for snappers, groupers and barracudas.
6. Reading the Water:
Pay attention to water conditions, tides, and currents. Fish often gather in areas where there is baitfish or where the current carries prey past them.
Observe the behavior of seabirds, as they can indicate the presence of feeding fish.
7. Patience and Persistence:
Shore jigging can require patience, and it may take time to locate active fish. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t catch fish on every outing.
8. Safety Considerations:
Be cautious when fishing from rocky shorelines or piers. Wear appropriate footwear with good traction to avoid slips and falls. When it comes to Rocky Shores, always let someone know where you are, or even better, never go alone. Having company when a beginner, can only make your fishing better, less tiring, and easier. If your company is an experienced angler, even better!
Shore jigging fishing is an exciting and rewarding way to explore coastal waters while targeting a variety of saltwater species. As a beginner, it’s essential to start with the right equipment, practice your casting and retrieval techniques, and pay attention to the water conditions. Remember, fishing is not just about the catch but also about enjoying the outdoors and the thrill of the chase. With some dedication, patience, and a bit of trial and error, you can become a successful shore jigging angler and experience the joys of coastal fishing. So, grab your gear, head to the shoreline, and start your shore jigging adventure today!

Introduction:
Shore jigging has gained immense popularity among landbased anglers across the country. This exciting fishing method, originating from Japan, involves casting out a jig from the shore and working it back in various ways. Unlike boat-based jigging, shore jigging requires horizontal movement to achieve the desired action from the jig. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the essentials of shore jigging, including safety precautions, target species, recommended gear, suitable fishing spots, effective jigs and tactics.
Safety is paramount when engaging in shore jigging. Prioritize your well-being by ensuring the conditions at your chosen fishing spot, such as swell, wind, and rain, are safe. It is advisable to monitor the spot before fishing, as weather forecasts may not always be accurate. Carry a lifejacket with you as a precautionary measure, as no fish is worth risking your life for. Stay updated on the conditions using reliable sources such as the Bureau of Meteorology, Willy Weather, or SeaBreeze.
Why Shore Jigging:
Shore jigging presents a unique way to target fish and expand your fishing techniques. Whether you prefer using bait, soft plastics, hard body lures, or jigs, shore jigging allows you to explore various parts of the water column without changing your lure. By adjusting your retrieve and tactics, you can effectively target different areas of the water, optimizing your chances of getting a bite. Furthermore, shore jigging broadens the range of species you can pursue, accommodating both fast-moving predators like kingfish, salmon, and bonito, as well as slower prey like snapper and jewfish.
Target Species:
Shore jigging caters to both pelagic and demersal species, providing ample opportunities to catch a variety of fish. While specific jigs may yield better results for certain species, there is a jig for every occasion. Common target species for shore jigging include kingfish, salmon, bonito, flathead, snapper, mulloway, and tuna. While it's possible to catch a mixed bag, focusing on one or two species allows you to tailor your tactics accordingly and increase your chances of success.
Essential Gear:
Investing in specialized gear for shore jigging enhances your overall experience. Opt for a rod between 9-10ft in length, with a recommended power rating of PE 1-4. Consider heavier combos in the PE5+ range for larger species. A longer rod facilitates longer casts and better control when fighting fish near the shore or rocky ledges. Look for a rod with a softer tip, as it enables precise manipulation of the jig in the water. Carbon rods with a soft tip provide an excellent combination of flexibility and strength. For reels, choose a Shimano model between 5000-8000 size, preferably with a higher gear ratio (HG or XG). Adjust the line strength according to the reel and rod size, typically ranging from 20lb (PE1) to 40-50lb (PE3-4) braided lines. Attach a fluorocarbon leader , with the weight depending on the fishing location and structure. Utilize reliable knots like FG or PR for secure connections, and employ split rings and assist hooks for jig versatility.
Gear Maintenance:
Proper care of your gear ensures its longevity and optimal performance. Keep your equipment away from saltwater as much as possible and clean it thoroughly after each session to prevent rust.
Recommended Fishing Spots:
The choice of fishing spots depends on your location in Australia. Rock ledges provide access to deep water and are ideal for shore jigging. Aim for areas with water depth ranging from 8-15m or more to maximize your chances of success. Other viable locations include break walls, jetties, and beaches. Explore your local area and consult local fishing reports or online forums to discover the most productive shore jigging spots near you.
Jigs and Tactics:
The market offers a wide range of jig shapes, sizes, and colors, catering to various fishing conditions and target species. Experiment with different jigs to find the ones that work best for you. Slow-falling jigs are effective when targeting slower fish, while fast-sinking jigs are suitable for aggressive or fast-moving species. Remember, most strikes occur during the jig's fall, so pay close attention during this critical phase. Adjust your retrieve speed, jerking motion, and depth to imitate natural prey movements and entice the fish to strike.
Fish Landing:
When it comes to landing your catch, utilize a net to secure the fish or, if in shallow water, walk the fish back to the shore. If you are fishing from a higher ledge, consider using a telescopic net or seek assistance from a fishing partner to safely land the fish. Avoid using the rod to lift the fish, as it may damage the rod or result in a lost catch.
Conclusion:
Shore jigging offers an exhilarating and versatile fishing experience for landbased anglers. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can embark on successful shore jigging adventures, targeting a wide range of species and expanding your fishing horizons. Remember to prioritize safety, choose the appropriate gear, select suitable fishing spots, and experiment with various jigs and tactics. Immerse yourself in this thrilling fishing technique, adapt to the conditions, and enjoy the wonders of shore jigging. Stay safe and tight lines!

3-Piece Slow Pitch Rod
I just ordered a 3 pieces slow rod from Ali.......Ya, I know, not the best quality but, I have used many sub100$ Chinese rods. Anyway, I will test it in a family trip in Costa Rica in February. Don't want to bring a big tube for 1 or 2 half days fishing. Not much to loose at this price. Will see... https://m.fr.aliexpress.com/item/40...tedetail&spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.70462e0eqVRiC4
Nothing wrong with trying new brands. I have to wait until May to try my Abu. Please post a report even if the fishing sucks to let us know how the rod performed. I’ll do the same.

Glad to find this thread. Tailwalk has a 3pc spinning jigging rod as well! Ordered one recently but haven't had the chance to fish it proper, seems very well made and balanced. Can't post a link to the rod, but googling salty shape dash jigging s63/200 should help.
Looks good. Honestly many of us can’t afford the time or money to visit exotic locations with fishing as the primary goal very often. We often compromise to do combo trips where fishing is a bonus. A slow pitch travel spinning rod that can micro or shore jig is a great option. The micro Jigging scene is becoming very popular in some parts and allows small to medium fish a chance to put on a good show. I travelled during the Christmas holiday and saw a lot of small rod tubes being carried-on (yes, mostly fly rods but not all). Those guys appeared to be making the most of a family-oriented vacation. It’s time for the SPJ crowd to stop missing out on fishing opportunities just because we are too proud to beg manufacturers for good travel gear. Keep them coming.
Hi, just an update as I just received my madmouse bambluz slow rod, 3 pieces. Not tried yet but quality seems really good. It as a nice parabolic bend that doesn't look like like a popping blank built like a slow rod. The tip section is solid carbon. It's a little more heavy than my other rods but I'm happy.

🔰Shore Jigging: A Beginner's Guide to NZ
Introduction.
Shore jigging is a fishing forms of fishing that involves casting the weighted jigs from the shore and retrieving them with a rhythmic jigging motion. It's a simple yet effective technique that can target a wide variety of fish, from hard-fighting pelagic species like kingfish and kahwai to bottom-dwellers like the gunard and snapper.
What is Shore Jigging?
Shore jigging is a relatively straightforward fishing technique that doesn't require a boat. You can do it from any shore-based location with access to open water, such as piers, jetties, beaches, and rocky outcrops. All you need is a sturdy rod and reel, a selection of jigs, and some basic knowledge of how to jig.
Why Choose Shore Jigging?
Shore jigging offers several advantages over other fishing methods, especially for beginners:
- Accessibility: You don't need a boat, making it a more affordable and accessible way to get started with saltwater fishing.
- Simplicity: The technique is relatively easy to learn, even for complete novices.
- Variety: Shore jigs can target a wide range of fish species, making it an exciting and versatile fishing method.
- Exercise: Jigging requires some physical effort, providing a good workout while you fish
Classifications
By tackle weight.
- Super Light Shore Jigging: casting weight between 10-20g, PE#1 and below
- Light Shore Jigging: casting weight between 20-60g, PE#1-2
- Shore Jigging: lure weight 60g and above, PE#2.5 and over
This is just a most common shore jigging classification by the tackle weight. Some suppliers or anglers might group them slightly different.
- Fast Pitch Shore Jigging : Often referred to as shore jigging, this method involves fast pitching or medium-speed pitching actions, usually done in areas with a good vertical drop field like rocks or jetties.
- Shore Slow Jigging : The rod action for shore slow jigging is slow, bending to a 5-5 ratio when loading. This method is akin to slow pitch jigging on a boat, but adapted for the shore using slow jigs.
- Surf Jigging : Utilize a lengthy casting rod, minimum 10' (3m), to cast the jig over surf breaks. Anglers can move along the beach while casting, also referred to as 'Run N Gun'.
- Lake Shore Jigging : a unique way of shore jigging to catch freshwater species.
Getting Started with Shore Jigging
If you're new to shore jigging, here are a few essential things to get you started:
- Rod and Reel: Choose a sturdy rod and reel that can handle the weight of your jigs and the power of the fish you're targeting. Reel size can go from 2000 to 14000.
- Jigs : Jigs are the lures you'll be using to attract fish. They come in various shapes, sizes, and weights. Start with a selection of jigs in different weights to target different depths and fish species. Choose the jigs to suit your shore jigging method which mentioned before.
- Line: Braided line is the best choice for shore jigging due to its strength and thin diameter.
- Leader: Use a fluorocarbon leader or nylon leader are both good for shore jigging, to add abrasion resistance and prevent your line from being bitten off by fish. Replace the leader immediately if seen any damage on lines
- Knot : Best to use FG knot for line to line, chain knot for terminals. FG knot balances knot size, strength, and time. Chain knot is easy, strong, and preserves leader strength with no slipping.
- Terminals : The split ring and solid ring combo is superior for securing the lure and hook compared to snaps, and it offers the most compact size. It is recommended to always use this combo over any other.
- Landing Net or Gaff : Always prepare a landing equipment with you to minimum the chance to lose fish
- Life Saving Devices : Helmet, knee guard, satellite beacon, cell phone and most importantly, the life jacket.
Basic Jigging Techniques
- Cast your jig out as far as you can, or you know where the fish is.
- Let the jig sink to the desired depth.
- Begin jigging by raising your rod tip sharply and then lowering it with a slow, controlled motion. This will impart a darting, erratic action to your jig.
- Vary the speed and height of your jigs to see what attracts fish.
- When you feel a bite, set the hook firmly and reel the fish in.
Shore Jigging Tips for Beginners
- Start in calm conditions and progress to rougher water as you gain experience.
- Go with experienced shore angler and always wear safety devices.
- Learn about the different fish species in your area and their preferred habitats.
- Tie your knots securely and double-check them before each cast.
- Practice casting in the field to polish your skills.
- Be patient and persistent. It takes time and practice to become a successful shore jigger.
Shore jigging is a fun and rewarding fishing technique that can be enjoyed by anglers of all skill levels. With its accessibility, simplicity, and variety, it's a great way to get started with saltwater fishing or add a new dimension to your existing fishing skills. So grab your rod and reel, head to the shore, and give shore jigging a try!

Visa-free travel to Russia
Several countries now have bilateral agreements in place with the Russian Federation to allow visa-free travel to Russia for their citizens. Unfortunately, however, there is no indication that similar agreements will be reached with the EU, the US, or the UK any time soon.
If you are not a citizen of one of the countries below and do not hold a diplomatic passport, the only other way to visit the Russian Federation without a visa is on a cruise ship to St. Petersburg. This exemption allows you to stay in the city for up to 72 hours without a visa on the condition that you are sleeping on the ship and are accompanied at all times by a licensed tour guide. If your cruise calls in St. Petersburg for 48 or 72 hours, there are companies offering shore tours which include a day in Moscow.
The same visa-free regime is applied to passengers on ferries from Helsinki and Tallinn operated by the company St. Peter Line, although in the case of ferry passengers you need to book your own accommodation. Again, it is possible within the 72 hours to visit Moscow as well. You can find out more about visa-free tours to Moscow and St. Petersburg here .
Nationalities which can travel to Russia without visas are divided into four groups with different requirements and different limitations on length of stay for each group. Even if you do not need a visa to enter Russia, you will certainly need a passport valid for at least six months after the date of your proposed exit from Russia, and you may require other official documents. You will also, like all foreign travelers in Russia, still need to register with the Federal Migration Service upon arrival.
Citizens of the countries of the CIS (the Commonwealth of Independent States) are permitted to stay in the Russian Federation for up to 90 days without a visa.
Citizens of these countries are allowed to stay in the Russian Federation without a visa for up to 90 days in each 180-day period, provided they will not be involved in any commercial or work-related activities during their stay.
Citizens of the countries in this group can stay in the Russian Federation for up to 30 days without a visa. They are not entitled to work while in Russia.
Citizens of these Balkan countries can also stay in Russia without a visa for up to 30 days, but must also show tourist documents (tourist confirmation and tourist voucher) or an official invitation to immigration officials.
