13 Awesome Things to Do in Xátiva Spain

Xátiva, Spain is a beautiful city that is packed with history, beautiful architecture, and stunning views.

It is without a doubt one of my favorite day trips from Valencia and an easy place to while away a whole day if not more.

There are restaurants and historical sites to explore. You’re not too far from the best beaches in Valencia like Cullera and Gandia. Located about 60km or 37 miles south of Valencia, you’re not far from the action of all of the top things to do in Valencia .

How to Get to Xátiva Spain

It is a quick 40 minutes by train from Valencia or you can drive here in about an hour.

To get to Xátiva from Valencia, get yourself to the Valencia Nord Station and hop on the C2 Cercanias line. You can get tickets directly on the RENFE website or you can buy it on the day when you are at the station.

Is Xátiva Worth Visiting?

Yes! I wouldn’t be writing an entire article about this beautiful town if it wasn’t!

If you are staying in Valencia and trying to decide whether a trip to Xátiva is worth it for you , then this list of top things to do in Xátiva should help you decide.

The main things to do in this town are explore historical sites that date back to the Roman and Iberian occupations. There are also two fantastic art museums and some stunning architecture to explore in the old town.

If these types of activities don’t excite you, then you can probably skip a trip to Xátiva. Consider instead exploring the wine region of Requena or the combination of lavish palaces and beautiful beaches in Gandia .

There are so many amazing views around Xativa, but one of my favorites is from the castle.

Download the Xátiva Spain City App

The Xátiva Tourism Board has created a fantastic App that you can use as your guide around the city. It’s a great way to learn about each of the monuments as you self-tour around the city.

You can download it for Android here and for Apple phones here .

There is a map, a list of the different things to do in Xátiva, and information listed for each attraction. You can read about the history and see photos from all different angles.

13 Awesome Things to Do in Xátiva, Spain

There are so many fun things to do in Xátiva, here are my top picks for a day trip to this historical area.

One of the two fortresses on the hill in Xátiva. You get the best view of each one from the towers of the opposite one.

1. Xátiva Castle

Xátiva Castle sits atop a hill on the southern edge of the city center. The name is misleading because on the premises there are actually two separate fortifications.

The Castillo Menor and Castille Mayor, the lesser castle and the main castle. Castle Menor sits atop Roman and Iberian ruins and is the older of the two castles. Castle Mayor is the more recently built Medieval castle.

You can reach the castle by walking from the downtown area. It takes about 30 minutes and a lot of leg power to get to the top, but it allows you to stop at the different viewpoints and other ruins along the way.

There is a shuttle bus that also runs between the train station and the castle. You should stop into the tourism office when you arrive to learn about the operating hours of the shuttle.

The third way to get here is to drive. If you have driven yourself to Xátiva, you can drive up to the entrance of the castle. There is a free parking lot about 100 meters from the entrance through the castle’s main gate.

I highly recommend grabbing the map from the ticket office when you arrive. That way you won’t miss any of the unique gates, towers, or historical monuments that are scattered around the fortresses.

The Basilica of Xátiva is a beautiful place to explore while visiting the city.

2. Basilica of Xátiva

Located in the center of the old town of Xátiva Spain is the Collegiate Basilica of Xátiva. It is often referred to as La Seu by the locals.

Construction of the basilica began in the late 16th century. It was built on the site of an old Mosque and more than four centuries later, the basilica is still unfinished.

There is even a local saying when something is taking too long. People say, “This is taking longer than the construction of La Seu.”

Look for the Porta del Mercat. This is the door of the basilica that opens out onto the market square along Sant Vicent Street and is the oldest door of the building dating back to 1568.

You can enter the basilica during the few hours a day that it is open. The best part (if you’re not too tired from the climb up to the castle) is to climb the 180 steps to the top of the bell tower. The top of the tower is 60 meters tall (196 feet) and offers incredible views back over the rooftops of the old town.

The Antic Hospital Reial is a spectacular site to explore. Even from the outside, you know it will be worth exploring more of it.

3. Antic Hospital Reial

Directly across the street from the basilica, you can easily stop at Antic Hospital Reial. Like many things in small Spanish towns, the opening hours are irregular and brief, so be sure to check in advance so you don’t miss stepping into this stunning old hospital.

The hospital was founded in 1244 as a royal hospital. Inside it, you will find a combination of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Much of the original building was lost in a fire during the 18th century and was rebuilt afterward.

It remained a hospital that served the people of Valencia for over five centuries. Head inside to take a look at the different architecture as well as the stunning courtyard.

4. Plaça de Mercat

The central plaza and market square of Xátiva Spain is one of my favorite places to wander through. Surrounded by colorful buildings on all sides, you really feel yourself to be in the Mediterranean while you peek around the corners here.

If you are visiting in the morning, there are tons of restaurants surrounding the plaza where you can stop for a coffee or light meal. In the evenings, things reopen and you can sit outside to enjoy tapas and cold beers or wine from the nearby Requena-Utiel wine region.

I visited right in the middle of siesta time in August, so the plaza was deserted. This brought with it its own charm. With no one around, I could take as many photos as I wanted, find a bench in the shade easily, and take my time looking at each of the buildings without worrying about being in someone’s way.

The market plaza in Xátiva is particularly quiet during siesta time in August.

5. Jardi de la Pau

This little garden near the center of town is a wonderful place to find a little bit of peace in a bustling town like Xátiva. There are tons of different flowers, a beautiful fountain, plenty of benches to sit on, and lots of dog walkers to distract you.

It is not a large park, but a simple garden where people stroll through. But it is surrounded by so much modernity, it feels like a little breath of fresh air to stop through here.

6. Antigua Estacion

Antigua Estacion, located right on the edge of the city center to the east, is the second oldest train station in Spain.

It is not longer a functioning train station and isn’t really much to look at other than a crumbling brick building. But if you are a train or history buff, it’s cool to learn about the history of this location and see the remnants with your own eyes.

It was originally built in 1854 and connected this region of Spain all the way back to Madrid.

The Antigua Estacion is worth checking out if you are a history or train buff!

7. Terrassa Sant Josep

For more exceptional views back over Xátiva as well as of the castle all in one photo, stop into Terrassa Sant Josep.

It also happens to be a wonderful place to eat during your day trip to Xátiva Spain. If you are visiting during the busy summer months, be sure to call ahead and book a table so you can get a table out on the terrace.

The food is simple but exquisite. Think paella with local ingredients, grilled seafood, fresh salads, plates of Valencian cheeses, and locally cured meats.

8. Cova dels Coloms

As you walk up to Xátiva Castle, you will find tons of different signs that tell you what used to be along the hillside. The city is full of so much history.

One of the sites that is worth stopping at is Cova dels Coloms . It is a large cave that offers some stunning cool air, a true relief from the Spanish summer heat.

A visit to the archeology museum in Gandia is worth checking out if you want to learn more about that period in Valencian history.

The Islamic Palace is one of many historical sites to visit in Xátiva, Spain.

9. Islamic Palace

As the name suggests, this is a site where an Islamic palace once stood. Like many cities and towns in Spain, Moorish influence remains around every corner.

This site is pretty much completely left in ruin. When I visited it looked like you could have at one time walked through the palace. There are a few unkept paths that wind through the small ruins site.

However, when I visited there was a fence that was surrounding it and it was padlocked so that no one could enter. It is very easy to see from the path that winds up to the palace. Cross the small footbridge across the street from the Terrassa Sant Josep and you will be able to get the best view straight down into the ruins.

10. Jardines del Palasiet

This is a larger park than the Jardi de la Pau. It is located to the west of the city center and is a stunning park and gardens to explore in Xátiva Spain. It is particularly wonderful in late spring and early summer when all of the different flowers are in bloom.

The park is well landscaped and feels more like palace gardens that you may have experienced in Seville or Zaragoza .

There are fountains, hedged paths, and flowers and vines climbing along nearby buildings. There are plenty of benches to sit on in the sunshine or in the shade. It’s a popular place for locals to come and relax on warm summer days.

There are a few fantastic museum that you should visit on a day trip to Xátiva Spain.

11. Almudín de Xátiva Museum

If you enjoyed visiting the Lonja de la Seda in Valencia, you will likely find a trip to the Almudín equally fascinating.

The building was originally constructed back in the mid-1500s. It was a wheat market which is perhaps less glamorous than the silk market past of the Lonja, but at the time, was equally important and grand.

You will still see a Gothic facade and Ionic columns inside the Renaissance courtyard. But it is not just worth visiting to see the architecture.

The Almudín is now home to the archeology museum of Xátiva. Inside you can learn about the city’s history through the Iberian, Roman, Visigothic, and Islamic remains that are housed here.

12. Museum of Fine Arts Casa de l’Ensenyament

For a smaller city, Xátiva Spain is packed with history and culture. Art lovers should not miss a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in the city center.

The Fine Arts Museum of Xátiva is home to one of the best collections in all of the Valencia region. You’ll find pieces here from Ribera and Goya as well as sculptures and masonry from different Spanish artists.

A piece (and statement) not to miss is the portrait of Felipe V. It is hung upside down in revenge for his having ordered the burning of Xàtiva in 1707.

The Museum of Fine Arts is a stunning museum to visit in Xátiva.

13. Cova Negra

The only real way to visit this part of Xátiva Spain is if you have a car. If you are exploring this region of Spain with a rental car, then you should not miss a stop at this stunning regional park.

Cova Negra is both the name of the cave inside the park as well as the actual name of the municipal nature park, which can be a little bit confusing. the park is 57 hectares or about 140 acres.

There are tons of walking paths to explore the park. Autumn is a wonderful time to visit since the leaves will begin to change colors here. But it is a great place to visit most of the year since it’s covered and therefore significantly cooler than the city center in summer.

The cave itself has been named a UNESCO cultural heritage site due to the Neanderthal remains that were discovered here (and are now housed in the Almudín Museum).

Take a Day Trip Tour from Valencia

Want to explore Xátiva as a day trip from Valencia, but don’t want to drive? Perhaps you want to explore the historical sites with a knowledgeable guide?

The best way to do that is to take a tour from Valencia. This tour starts at a meeting point in downtown Valencia and includes transportation, a bilingual guide, entry tickets to the main sites around Xátiva, as well as a stop at a second town nearby. Book that tour here .

Xàtiva

James I of Spain was left speechless the first time he saw Xàtiva and its impressive fortress. Come and visit the town and have a similar reaction when you step foot in sights steeped in centuries of history and immerse yourself in incredible landscapes.

One of the most beautiful towns in Spain, Xàtiva is defined by its delicious gastronomy, fascinating history and beautiful naturescapes . The town’s castle, Castillo de Xàtiva , dominates the skyline and speaks of a millennia-long history. But Xàtiva is not stuck in the past: it is a vibrant and bustling place with a great deal to offer visitors.

If you’re keen to visit the town, you will be pleased to know that it’s easy to get to. The town is just a 50-minute drive along the motorway from València city or a direct train ride from the capital’s main station.

What to see in Xàtiva

Beckoning you to come and explore, the castle is a great place to start your exploration of the town. As you make your way up to the top of the hill it crowns, known as Sierra Vernissa, you will discover that the fortress sits on ancient remains dating back to the Iberian and Roman periods . The Medieval part of the castle is known as Castillo Menor, which is surrounded by Castillo Mayor, giving the fortress its characteristic combination of Gothic and Islamic architecture.

From here you will be able to peer down at the town and have a good look at what else remains to be explored . One of the buildings that will jump out at you is La Seu , also known as Colegiata de Santa María . This great church is built on the site of the old mosque and is home to a beautiful altarpiece and interesting museum .

And that’s not all. You can also visit Hospital Real , the birthplace of Papa Alejandro - which is a stop-off on a guided tour about the Borjas - and Museo del Almudín. This museum is famed for its portrait of Felipe V which, most unusually, hangs upside down . If you’d like to find out more about this, we recommend taking a guided tour to really get to know the history of the town .

Once you’ve explored all the sights and points of interest in the town, you will hear the call of the surrounding scenery. The Cova Negra trail is an excellent route that walkers, cyclists and rock climbers will love. Starting in Xàtiva , the trail will lead you to a Gothic aqueduct known as Les Arcadetes d’Alboi. As you continue along the route, you will see beautiful birds circling overhead, such as Bonelli’s eagles and peregrine falcons . An excellent opportunity for birders to get out their binoculars and discover the local wildlife.

You will soon reach Font del Segura and then cross a bridge to the destination of the walk, Cova Negra . After taking some photographs of this impressive cave, you will start to make your return to Xàtiva, passing a popular rock climbing spot: L’Aventador.

This rockface is equipped for rock climbers - offering different levels of ascent - and even has a via ferrata . The trail then rises up, affording some beautiful vistas over Xàtiva. The final part of the route will take you to the remains of the wall that once protected the town and an old ice house.

Eating out in Xàtiva is another experience you won’t want to miss. Arroz al horno is the undisputed king of traditional local recipes, but there are other tasty varieties such as arroz blanquet and paella which your palate will thank you for. For dessert you simply have to try arnadí (a pudding made from pumpkin) and almoixàvena (a pastry enriched with egg and a delicious touch of cinnamon).

Before you leave, we recommend making a few purchases so you can enjoy the flavours of Xàtiva at home. Make sure you get a handful of ajos tiernos , green garlic, which can be used to make all sorts of dishes, and a bottle or two La Costera wine .

So what are you waiting for? Come to Xàtiva to explore all its sights, immerse yourself in its landscapes and indulge in its cuisine. The town has been waiting for centuries to welcome you - don’t make it wait any longer.

Historical Xativa Castle at sunset in the Valencia region of Spain.

© Vitaly Titov/Shutterstock

Castillo de Xàtiva

Top choice in Valencia Province

Xàtiva’s castle, which clasps to the summit of a double-peaked hill overlooking the old town, is arguably the most evocative and interesting in the Valencia region. Behind its crumbling battlements you’ll find flower gardens (bring a picnic), tumbledown turrets, towers and other buildings (some used in the 20th century and hence much changed), such as dungeons and a pretty Gothic chapel. The walk up to the castle is a long one, but the views are sensational.

If you think it's big today, imagine what it must have looked like 300 years ago at full size. Sadly, it was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1748 and never really recovered.

Before the current incarnation, the castle hill was always a fortified vantage point thanks to its crucial strategic position, and was important in the wars between Rome and Carthage, as well as in the Roman strife of the 1st century BC.

On the way up, the 18th-century Ermita de Sant Josep is on your left, and to the right is the lovely Romanesque Iglesia de Sant Feliu (1269), Xàtiva’s oldest church. You’ll also pass by the very battered remains of part of the old Muslim town . A tourist train zips up the hill a couple of times a day from the tourist office (€4.20).

Various signposted walks cover the castle hill and environs.

Xativa, Spain; a charming town and home to Xativa castle

Photo of Xativa

Visit Xativa

Xativa is a small town about 70 km to the south west of Valencia. It is inland of the coastal resorts of Cullera and Gandia. It is home to the spectacular castle of Xativa.

Explore Xativa

Xativa dates back to the 10th century and has Roman, Visigoth and Arab roots. Xativa was famous for its linen fabrics during Romans rule and the Arabs introduced an important paper trade to Xativa which became a centre for learning.

After the Reconquista King James I conquered the town and took it back from Arab rule.

Xativa basilica

Xativa became an important town into the Middle Ages and was the birthplace of several members of the famous and infamous Borgia family. The popes Calixto III and Alexander VI were both born here into the Borgia family.

In the 18th century King Philip V during the Spanish War of Succesion had the town burn down. Because of this many buildings of Xativa were built in the 18th century.

Visit the Fine Arts Museum in town and in the Borbones room you will see a portrait of King Philip hanging upside down in memory and protest of this event.

Another famous figure born in Xativa was José de Ribera born in 1591. Some of his work is also in the Fine Arts Museum.

The centre of Xativa sits behind the Alameda de Jaume I avenue where you will find the the tourist information centre. From here walk south to the Santa Maria Collegiate Basilica.

The basilica dates from 1414 but was largely rebuilt in the 1500s in Renaissance style. It was built on the site of a previous mosque.

Opposite the basilica on the Placa de Calixto III is the beautiful ancient hospital building which was founded in the 15 and 16th centuries. Inside is the Borgia interpretation centre with information about the Borgia (Borja) family.

The Archdeacons Palace is also by here.

From here walk westward to visit the Fine Arts Museum which is housed in an 18th century building with a Baroque doorway and the Almodi Archaeological museum constructed by Joan Ribera and Marti Xixalbo in the 16th century.

It has a cloister patio with Ionian columns and exhibits from Roman and Islamic times.

Now head northwards to the Sant Francesc Church which was once part of a convent founded by Jaume I. Its fountain has an image of the saint and was built in Baroque style. Walk from here to the attractive Placa del Mercat where a market takes place every Tuesday and Friday.

There are a couple of important buildings by here, the Marquis of Montortal's Palace from the 15th century with wrought iron balconies and decorative tiling, the Sant Ramon Bonhivern's Palace, and a 19th century mansion known as Diego's house with original tile work and window grilles.

Continuing eastwards you will get to the Santa Clara Convent built in the 14th century and renovated in the 17th century.

Also to note is the Alarcon's Palace built in the 18th century, this attractive building has asymmetrical door and window openings and at the top of the palace a row of arched windows illuminating the top floor.

Outside is the oldest fountain in Xativa, the Royal fountain of the Trinitat. Around its edge are the coats of arms of Xativa and of Valencia. It is one of the few Gothic fountains that remains in Spain.

Continue eastwards to Alexander VI Square and the birthplace of Rodrigo de Borja (Borgia) who became Pope Alexander VI Borgia. This square is decorated with the Aldomar's Royal fountain, a fairly simple round fountain with a polygonal crown.

Next the Church of Sant Pere was built in the 14th century and is one of the oldest in Xativa. It has a wooden coffered ceiling in Gothic-Mudejar style.

Nearby is the Convent of San Onofre which was built in the 18th century. It has a two-storey square cloister and a church decorated with tiled friezes and frescos in Baroque style.

Just behind here is the Twenty-five Spouts Fountain, a large Neo-Classical drinking trough from the late 18th century.

Here and there in the town you can see remnants of the original Medieval Wall of the town.

  • Plaça De La Trinitat

On your walk through the centre of Xàtiva, come to the Plaça de la Trinitat. One of the most symbolic and remarkable places in this town. The medieval design and atmosphere can be felt all around, surrounded by palaces, a convent and the royal fountain of Trinitat.

The latter is the oldest original fountain in Valencia that hasn’t had any remodelling. Interesting, don’t you think? Don’t miss it.

Xativa Market Square

tourist attractions xativa spain

At the end of Calle Noguera you will find the Plaza del Mercado. This is perhaps the urban space of greatest environmental interest. Most of the buildings date back to the 18th century, and it is also a historical and cultural place for the Spanish community. In this square, you can also find places formerly belonging to royalty and the auctions of municipal works. At at one time, in this same square, public executions were even carried out.

Every Tuesday and Friday it comes to life, offering a lively mercantile and popular spectacle. At the opposite end of the square, there is a narrow street that leads up to Corretería street, the most important urban artery from the Middle Ages until the last century. Turning right, two blocks further on, we find a tiny square where the Almodí Museum is located. This square is the perfect place to connect all the wonders that Xàtiva, Spain has to offer.

  • Royal Hospital

The Hospital Reial is nothing more or less than one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings in the city of Xàtiva. It is located opposite the well-known “colegiata” and is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive monuments in the city. As if this were not enough, the Valencian architecture comes out in all its splendour after the extensions that were made in the 15th and 16th centuries, harmoniously fusing the Gothic and Renaissance styles.

The oldest part of this magical building is the chapel, built in the middle of the 15th century. Inside it has a star-shaped vault, polychrome keystones and modillions, a façade of ogee arches with pinnacles; gables, and one of the elements that generates most curiosity among tourists are the beautiful choirs of musical angels that accompany the Virgin with the child, superimposed on the last archivolt.

Sant Domenec, Xativa Spain

The Sant Doménech is an old convent, built between the XIII and XIV centuries, by orders of the then, king Jaume II. This was when Xàtiva was considered the second most important city of the kingdom of Valencia. Moreover, this convent was built in medieval times, during the important cultural diffusion which gave way to the Spain that we know today. Therefore, this convent is a historical place that you must see at least once when you are in Xàtiva, Spain.

Nowadays, the convent of Sant Domènec houses the Museum of Corpus Christi, with a permanent exhibition of the elements of this traditional festivity.

Sant Feliu Church

The Sant Feliu church is one of the oldest churches in the now extinct Kingdom of Valencia. This church was built in the 1200s, at the height of the medieval period, after the Christian conquest by King Jaume I, coinciding in turn with the expansion of the Gothic style throughout Valencia.

This church is on the slopes of the Castell, close to the Bellveret viewpoint, where the ancient Roman city of Saetabis once stood.

L’almodí Municipal Museum

Set in beautiful surroundings, these two ancient buildings come together to display Spain’s most interesting archaeological collection. The collection ranges from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages.

This imposing museum awaits you with its doors open for you to walk through the ancient Roman rooms and imagine the streets of medieval Xàtiva thanks to the main model. You can also get close to the Islamic toys and touch the ancient tools used by our Neanderthal ancestors.

Xàtiva Grand Theatre

As its name suggests, it is a large modern theatre with a very varied programme. It is well located, at the end of the busiest street of the city and surrounded by bars and restaurants that make the visit more pleasant. Perhaps the only detail we should point out is that the car park, being such a busy place, is almost always full, so it is advisable to park along the Alameda or the street below and walk a little.

The Casa De L’ensenyança

It has a long history as it was initially built in 1758 with the aim of educating poor children. Over the years, specifically in 1991 Mariano González Baldoví decided to remodel it and turn it into a fine arts museum.

The architecture consists of 3 floors, with an attractive design on the stairs and in the centre of the house. Here, they exhibit works of Pop Art and works by native Spanish artists. You will also find rooms with portraits of the Bourbon kings and engravings with collections by Goya and Jacques Callot – a real must!

  • Xàtiva Castle

Historical places are the best tourist attraction that a town or city can have. That’s why when in Xàtiva you can’t miss the chance to visit this incredible double fortress that measures about 1 km. The castle is home to a great deal of Xàtiva’s history, which is why, when you visit the Castell, you will meet a guide who will explain in detail what happened in this castle.

tourist attractions xativa spain

Apart from history, its Valencian Gothic architecture will make you want to take the most amazing pictures. You can also visit the interior of the castle where you will find the Porta Ferrissa gate and the parade ground in the courtyard that leads to the Castell Menor and the Castell Major, which are other places of great interest.

Exercise is another reason to visit this double fortress. You can walk all the way to the castle by hiking. However, make sure you bring water bottles and sun cream so that nothing can stop you from reaching the castle. If you don’t want to walk that far, don’t worry, you can drive to the castle entrance.

Collegiate Church Basilica Of Santa Maria

This imposing old church is also called La seu. Despite the religious differences implied by the name, at no time in history has this church been intended to be an episcopal see.

Focusing more on the structure of the church, we can see a gothic style. Even so, it is difficult to define a style as this church is still under construction, being one of the later ones, whose reputation has led to the phrase “It takes longer than the construction of the Seu”.

  • The Black Cave

Among the amazing attractions that Xàtiva offers us, we can find the Cova Negra, which has been declared a Municipal Natural Site since 2006. As well as being the place Xàtiva is known for, it is an essential visit for any tourist, thanks to the views and the natural experience that it offers. If you are an active tourist you will want to visit it every day.

It is in the narrow valley that runs along the river Albaida. This area rich in vegetation, has a total of 57 hectares, which reflect the place’s high ecological value.

Here we can find one of the most exceptional landscapes in Europe, which helps us understand the prehistory of this continent and the life of the Neanderthal man.

This location was very strategic in the times of the Valencian kingdom, as it is very close to the Montesa corridor. A journey to the black cave

In the footsteps of the neanderthals, a landscape steeped in history.

No trip to Xàtiva is complete without a visit to the nearby Cova Negra, declared a Municipal Nature Park in 2006. Located in a narrow valley that runs along the river Albaida, the park covers 57 hectares of spectacular countryside that is home to a wealth of ecological and heritage assets, including the Cova Negra archaeological site. Declared a Cultural Heritage Site, the cave is fundamental in understanding European prehistory and how the Neanderthals lived.

Rich source of biodiversity

A ramble through the Cova Negra landscape reveals the contrast between riverside and mountain flora. The river Albaida hosts communities of floating plants and is lined by riverside woods containing mature poplars and elms. Meanwhile, the mountain area is perfumed with the seductive scent of Mediterranean flora, including many aromatic herbs such as pebrella (Thymus piperella), a species of thyme that is endemic to Valencia.

A haven for observing wildlife

The Cova Negra is particularly rich in bird life, and patient observers may be treated to the sight of Bonelli’s eagles, grey herons, purple herons, kingfishers and peregrine falcons during their stroll. However, the park also hosts a wealth of other fauna.

The Cova Negra, major archaeological site

At the widest bend in the river Albaida lies the archaeological site of Cova Negra, named after the dark colour of its walls and once home to Neanderthals during the Palaeolithic Era. Human remains and paintings have been found inside, and the site is of fundamental importance in understanding Mousterian culture and how the Neanderthals lived. An exact reproduction of a parietal bone (part of the skull) from the era that was unearthed in the cave is exhibited in the Almodí Museum.

The Arcadetes d’Alboi aqueduct

The region’s historical gem of hydraulic engineering, the Arcadetes d’Alboi aqueduct strides across the river Albaida on the way to Alboi. Of Gothic construction, although not yet documented, its nine pointed arches and two hundred metres of length stand testament to an earlier era when it supplied water to the city.

A mediaeval canal

Les Arcadetes form part of the canal from Bellús to Xàtiva, a mediaeval watercourse that begins at the spring of Bellús. Listed as a Cultural Heritage Site at the beginning of century, it flows beside the Albaida River for ten kilometres. It is fascinating to seek out the respiralls, vertical, circular structures that connected the canal to the exterior during its underground sections. According to local legend, these were the brainchild of the intelligent daughter of the Muslim king of Xàtiva, and enabled water to flow along the entire route. However, her jealous brothers paid her for her ingenuity with death, an event commemorated by the two springs of crystalline water that then bubbled up at the site.

Outdoor activities

The Cova Negra park and the surroundings of Xàtiva in general are ideal for enjoying outdoor pursuits. Thanks to the numerous trails and paths that wend through the landscape, this is an unsurpassed area for hiking and mountain biking. Meanwhile, rock climbers will enjoy l’Aventador, a huge rock wall that has long been used for this sport.

GETTING HERE BY CAR

> From Xàtiva, take the CV-610 , direction Genovés; before the second roundabout leading into the town, turn right towards the village of Alboi. At the entrance, take a sharp left towards “La chopera de Alboi”. The car park, with room for at least 40 vehicles, is located 2 km further down the road on the right bank of the river Albaida.

> From Xàtiva towards Bellús on the N-340 ; at the Ermita de Bixquert chapel, there is a sign on the left to “Camí del Pont Sec” together with a sign indicating the place itself; from there, follow the signs to a small parking area located on the left bank of the river Albaida.  The pedestrian path that runs through the entire park, passing the Cova Negra and ending at the Casa de la Llum, starts here.

HIKING ROUTE FROM XATIVA

Walking from Xàtiva, the PRV-78 to the park takes between an hour and a half and two hours. The route starts beside the Fuente de los 25 Caños (fountain with 25 spouts) and is sign-posted; the path is totally flat and easy, and runs alongside the Xàtiva water supply channel.

XÁTIVA or Játiva Xàtiva "the city that gave birth to the Borgia family" is one of the most monumental towns of Valencia. The city breathes history on all four sides.

Walking through the city center, visiting its streets, squares, medieval palaces and memorials is absolutely amazing. There, you can visit the birthplace of the Borgias , Monasterio de Santa Clara, Hospital Real , Plaza del Mercado or one of the most prominent buildings such as Colegiata de Santa María . Xàtiva is a pretty town inside the Valencia region with 32,000 inhabitants, capital of Comarca La Costera located south of the province of Valencia. The city is located about 65km from aeropuerto de Valencia and about 35km from the coast and beaches of this community.

Colegiata church of Santa Maria aeral view

This city is proud to have given birth to many famous people throughout history, artists such as Jos é Ribera or inventors such as Francisco Paula Marti ; discoverer of shorthand. But undoubtedly the most famous family who lived in these lands was the Borgia family . A clan marked by corruption, favoritism, ambition and ruthlessness. Another curiosity is Xátiva being the first place in Europe where paper was manufactured in the year 1144, under the Islamic empire.

Frontal façade of the Royal Hospital of Xativa

The Borgia family arrived in Sagunto thanks to King James I who after having faithfully served the Crown and collaborated in the Reconquista, granted graces and favors to them. Thus, helping to create a great lineage who got an unprecedented boost up to the higher social ascension, “el papado de Roma.” Alfonso de Borja became known as Calixto III after being named Pope of Rome. At the top of the castle of Xàtiva we can see a hall dedicated to this family, which explains in detail who this family were. There are also trees showing who was who in this clan.

Xàtiva was one of the most important towns of the Kingdom of Valencia, even rivaling Valencia and retaining a great artistic heritage despite being burned in 1707 during the Civil War. Its walls and towers surprise visitors from afar towering majestically over the town of Xátiva.
