Murchison Falls National Park is a well-known but relatively remote wildlife reserve in northwestern Uganda, bisected by the Victoria Nile and situated between Lake Albert and Lake Kyoga. How to get there

Nile Safari Lodge is accessible via a 5-hour (305 km/189 mi) drive from Kampala via Masindi, Kichumbanyobo Gate, and Mubako Gate through the park. For more adventurous visitors, the lodge can also be accessed via the escarpment road passing through Bulisa and Wanseko.

Nile Safari Lodge has a helipad for private helicopters, with GPS coordinates of 2°15’08.7” N 31°31’10.2” E. The lodge can arrange a jet-ranger helicopter for 3 passengers at $3900 . For small chartered flights from Entebbe International Airport, the nearest airstrip is Bugungu Airstrip, about a 25-minute drive from the lodge.

Boat Safari

One of the most popular activities is the motorboat safari to the base of the Murchison Falls. This three-hour round trip takes you up the Victoria Nile, where you can spot hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, and lions along the Nile banks.

For a more tranquil experience, guests can take a three-hour motorboat safari in the other direction, downstream towards the delta at Lake Albert. This trip is an excellent opportunity to view rare shoebill storks and other papyrus endemic bird species. Guests can choose between an early morning ride with breakfast onboard or a late sunset ride.

Wildlife Viewing Game Drives

Game drives are also a must-do activity in Murchison Falls National Park. The savannah grasslands of the Buligi area, around the Victoria Nile delta on Lake Albert, offer the richest wildlife for game drive safaris. Guests can access this area via the Paraa Vehicle Ferry, a motorized pontoon that offers crossings every couple of hours in each direction. On the southern side of the Victoria Nile, where the landscapes are more heavily wooded, guests can explore the trails on their way to the Top of the Falls.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kniyo Pabidi & Budongo Forest

Chimpanzee tracking is another exciting activity that guests can experience in the nearby Kaniyo Pabidi Forest. This natural forest is home to over 800 chimpanzees, about 90 of which are habituated for tourism and available for chimpanzee trekking. Black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and olive baboons can also be spotted in the forest. The forest is also a bird-watching paradise, with highlights such as chocolate-backed kingfishers, white-thighed hornbills, and the exclusively endemic Puvel’s illaposis.

Budoongo Forest is another great place to watch primates and bird species near Nile Safari Lodge. This forest is an island of tropical river forest set in a sea of grassland in the southeast of the conservation area, with sightings likely to include a similar range of wildlife but without the habituated chimpanzees.

Nature Hiking

For guests who prefer hiking, the trail to the top of the waterfalls is a popular option. This 45-60 minute trail offers breathtaking views of the mighty cascade from different angles and elevations. Guests can also reach the trail as part of a game drive safari or a motorboat safari up the Paraa stretch.

Balloon Safari

For a unique experience, guests can opt for a balloon safari with Dream Balloons, which operates from a take-off site on the river’s north bank, around 17km from Nile Safari Lodge. The balloon uses an 8-passenger basket with a pilot and flies either east towards the Murchison Falls or west towards Lake Albert, depending on the prevailing wind conditions. Flights last 45-60 minutes and include a bush breakfast wherever the balloon lands.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching is a wildly endowed activity in Murchison Falls National Park, with over 450 recorded species. The park offers an opportunity to spot incredible bird species such as ground hornbills, secretary birds, black-bellied bustards, open-billed storks, weavers, swallow-tailed bee-eaters, red-throated bee-eaters, woodland kingfishers, francolins, grey herons, martial eagles, African fish eagles, papyrus gonoleks, lesser flamingoes, greater flamingoes, white-tailed larks, Verreaux’s eagle owls, and shoebill storks.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Finally, guests can visit the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a 70 sq km sanctuary that offers guided walks to get up close and personal with the last of Uganda’s white rhinos. While the sanctuary is over 100km south of most of the lodges in Murchison Falls, it is a project well worth supporting, and guests can make it a long day trip if they’re driving out from Kampala.

Nile Safari Lodge

Nile Safari Lodge is nestled amongst a papyrus forest, on the southern banks of the Nile River and each chalet or luxury tent offers a prime viewing spot for birds and wildlife. Game drives: Take a game drive and meet warthogs, lions, elephants, and buffalo. Murchison Falls National Park is also one of only 2 parks in Uganda that is home to giraffes. The lodge can supply drinks and a packed lunch upon request.

The property

Tastefully crafted out of eucalyptus poles and classic grass thatch roofs, the lodge has an organic touch. Gaze out over the Nile from the swoon-worthy salt infinity pool (plus that trusty pool bar), which is conveniently located near a smattering of sun loungers beneath a woven lapa. The Peponi Lounge & Bar is a prime reclining spot with a respectable selection of games on offer. The Laini restaurant combines European and African cuisine to create a menu that is hard to beat.

Spacious and oh-so-secluded, the six A-frame bandas are not a bad place to enjoy a little R & R. Along with lovely wooden finishes and billowing sails of netting, the rooms come with rich textiles for that pop of colour. Each room has a gorgeous shaded deck and king size bed while the Mwezi honeymoon banda also comes with a plunge pool and star bed. The Dunia family banda accommodates up to eight people - with a living room, private swimming pool and a stunning view of the Shoebill peninsula.

From this spot on the Nile, you'll find a world of unbelievable natural treasures. The all-important game drive is accompanied by some special additions - a Murchison Falls trek or night river cruise for an unreal view of the falls, where the wildlife often enjoys a drink at its base. Of course, Uganda is a bird watcher's dream with over 1100 species to find, including the ever-elusive Shoebill Stork (even though it can reach a height of 1.5 m). The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is also worth a visit on your way to or from the lodge!

Exclusive Banda

• This is a perfect room to spend a romantic getaway, with its breathtaking views.
• Exclusive bandas are the ideal place to relax with a drink or a book.

Family Deluxe Banda

• The family banda is ideal for families and small groups.
• It accommodates four to eight guests.
• The Family Deluxe Banda has two master bedrooms with four single beds and two king-size beds. And, it has a spacious living room and a private terrace with an optional lunch service.

It’s found on the southern banks of River Nile surrounded by the healthy papyrus forest. The amazing wooden chalets and lavishness tents that are situated in a perfect place to give a beautiful view of the park and the African wilderness.

The lodge has 10 spacious rooms, 5 wooden chalets and the lavish tents that have en-suited wash rooms, air conditioned comfortable rooms and luxury balconies that give a clear view of the area.            It has a fully stocked bar, restaurant with both international and local foods, the lounge along with the beautiful wilderness. Nile Safari Lodge is located just outside the Murchison Falls National Park boundary, a 6-hour drive from Kampala via Kichumbanyobo Gate.

It takes 25 minutes to get to Bugungu Airstrip which is the closest airport for chartered flights, from the lodge.  However, the lodge can also make arrangements for a jet-ranger helicopter and has a helipad for private helicopters.

• Hike to the Top of the Falls From your Nile River cruise, disembark at the bottom of the falls and hike up for a spectacular view from the top of Murchison Falls.
• Birdwatching Murchison Falls National Park is one of the premier birding destinations in Uganda.  Look out for species such as the Abyssinian ground hornbill, Red-throated bee-eater, and grey-headed kingfisher.
• Fishing For the avid angler, consider spending the day on the water for catch-and-release sport fishing.  The largest fish caught on record was a 113 kg Nile Perch.
• Chimpanzee Trekking Budongo Forest is one of three places in Uganda for tracking the habituated chimpanzee, and is located about three hours from Kampala, on the way to Murchison Falls National Park.
• Rhino Tracking The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to the only white Rhinos in Uganda.  Located about halfway between Murchison Falls and Kampala, along the Kampala-Gulu highway, the sanctuary offers visitors a chance to track the endangered rhino in their natural habitat.

Getting to Nile Safari Lodge in Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is approximately a 5-hour drive (280 km) from Kampala via the Kampala-Masindi highway.  Flights are also available from Entebbe to Bugungu airstrip and last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

If traveling from Kampala, we recommend stopping at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary—located midway between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park—for a chance to track the White Rhino.
