The band’s ‘At Their Very Best’ tour has taken in arenas across USA, Canada, UK & Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia over the last nine months with an impressive 500k+ tickets sold to date. Between the impressive staging, high concept performance art and surprise appearances from friends, the tour has been lauded as a band truly in their prime; a claim backed up by the plethora of five-star reviews from critics. The 1975 ‘Still … at their very best’ will set the bar even higher, featuring newly expanded production.

Over the last decade, The 1975 have firmly established themselves the defining band of their generation with their distinctive aesthetic, passionate fanbase and unique sonic approach.

Released last October, the band’s fifth studio album ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’ was met with lavish praise, with The FACE labeling it “an album of massive tunes, pristine production and sincere romanticism” and Rolling Stone vowing the album saw the band “reassert themselves at the forefront of 2020s pop-rock”. It outsold the rest of the Top 5 combined to land the band their fifth Official UK Number 1 album in a row. The band were also crowned ‘Best Rock/Alternative Act’ at the 2023 BRIT Awards.

The 1975

The 1975 has announced the “Still… At Their Very Best” fall tour, the band’s biggest North American tour to date. The Matty Healy-led group will take their fifth album, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” across the U.S. and Canada for the second time since its October 2022 release.

The tour will kick off Sept. 26 in Sacramento, Calif., and end Dec. 2 in Seattle.

The band had teased the tour on social media throughout the month, posting vague visuals and linking to an online registration form.

Popular on Variety

The tour evolved throughout its initial North American run, from altered setlists to surprise guest cameos from Phoebe Bridgers and Bleachers. Healy made headlines for bringing fans onstage during “Robbers” and passionately kissing them.

Variety praised the band’s latest performance at Madison Square Garden , calling the concert a “captivating exposition from a band that embraces nearly every pop trope yet demands to be taken seriously.” The band will return to the famed New York City venue on Nov. 14.

A fan presale begins June 21 at 10 a.m. local time, while public tickets will go on sale June 23 at 10 a.m. on the 1975’s website .

The 1975 Are Still at Their Very Best for New North American Tour Dates

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

The 1975 are returning to the States this fall for a second run of North American tour dates. The UK band’s Still…At Their Very Best trek will kick off in California this September.

The 1975’s latest run supports their 2022 album Being Funny in a Foreign Language, released in October. The group played a run of arena shows in North America last fall and have been performing worldwide all year. They are currently headlining festivals across the UK and Europe this summer.

The band released a new episode of their web series, A Theatrical Performance of an Intimate Moment, to announce the tour. The eight-minute video sees singer Matty Healy going through a morning routine before heading to work at a lab and experimenting on a patch of greenery.

The 1975 announce 39-date North American tour

The massive still...at their very best tour features shows across the u.s. and canada, beginning in september of this year..

the 1975 tour boston

The 1975 have announced a behemoth run of shows in the U.S. and Canada slated for this fall. The band's Still...at their very best tour kicks off on September 26 at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center, and will wrap up almost three whole months later at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena. In celebration, they've also released Episode 4 of their absurdist video series "A Theatrical Performance Of An Intimate Moment."

Still...at their very best is a continuation of the 1975's ongoing At Their Very Best tour, which has been marked by near-constant online discourse, mostly thanks to the antics of frontman Matty Healy. These include eating raw meat on stage, making out with fans, cameramen, and security guards, and — oh, yeah — dating Taylor Swift . These new shows promise an expanded production, but what that means is still anyone's guess.

The 1975 play a sold out td garden in boston [show review].

Overall, this concert was everything you want to see in a concert: moments that make you laugh, moments that bring tears to your eyes, and moments of pure bliss. The 1975 truly were “still at their very best.”

' src=

This past Sunday night, The 1975 played their first show at TD Garden in Boston. The stadium was packed to the brim, being the first show on this tour to sell out. The show represented round two of their incredibly successful “ The 1975 at their very best ” tour.

Being someone whose favorite band is The 1975 and who has seen them start out in small venues in Connecticut, through Boston Calling , through Terminal 5 in New York, to now TD Garden, it has been truly astonishing to witness their incredible rise to fame. Their music has also evolved substantially through the years, with each album showing off the many genres and instruments they can include successfully. It also goes to show that the fans will evolve with the band.

The setlist begins of course with the first song of the newest album and proceeds through some of the newer hits from ‘ Being Funny in a Foreign Language. ’ The energy through the stadium was pulsing, even from the stands above the floor section. Everywhere you looked, there were people of all ages belting out the lyrics to each and every song.

It goes without saying that the physical set on the “at their very best” and “still at their very best” tours is one of the most unusual sets I have ever seen. The stage is set up to look like the inside of a home, complete with doorways, various seating arrangements, prop furniture complete with lamps, and even a spiral staircase. The emphasis on the set is complete with sound effects to effectuate turning on an old lamp that buzzes, the sounds of opening and closing doors, and the flickering of lamps in sync with each other.

The best part about this set, in my opinion, is the return to some of the original staples of the band. Not only did they add a neon light of “still at their very best” that changes color in sync with the set of each song, but the doorways and any additional rectangles found on the stage are complete with neon strips to highlight the classic The 1975 rectangle.

At each location, the band has been making adjustments to the set to play some of the older classics off their original self-titled album. This show included “You” and “Heart Out” in the portion of the set that has been subject to changes. In addition, lead singer Matty Healy brought out his father, Tim Healy, for a song all to himself.

The use of a second stage at certain points of the show has been a new addition to this tour. The finishing moments of the set, where Matty Healy, bassist Ross McDonald , and guitarist Adam Hann all rock out to “People,” are given the added dynamic of bringing the remaining band members front and center on the main stage.

I will say we got to see less of the classic Matty Healy dance moments at this show than I was anticipating. I would imagine the band is getting quite tired, and given their announcement that they will be taking a hiatus from music for some time after this tour wraps up, it is playing a role in that possible exhaustion.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s 65th is cause for celebration

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 65th anniversary tour arrived at the Boch Center Wang Theatre Thursday; it was the first of five performances that will all close with the company’s signature work, Ailey’s 1960 “Revelations” (pictured).

Not many dance companies can celebrate a 65th anniversary. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater passed that mark last year, and this weekend a 65th anniversary tour brings it back to the Boch Center Wang Theatre, under the auspices of the Celebrity Series. Ailey has been a near-annual Boston fixture over the past half-century, and it’s hard to imagine another contemporary dance ensemble popular enough to fill the capacious Wang over a long weekend.

All five performances will close with the company’s signature work, Ailey’s 1960 “Revelations.” The Saturday matinee program will feature “Ailey Classics.” The Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin with new productions of Alonzo King’s “Following the Subtle Current Upstream” (2000) and Ronald K. Brown’s “Dancing Spirit” (2009), the latter a tribute to artistic director emerita Judith Jamison. Thursday’s opening bill (to be repeated Sunday afternoon) brought a new-to-Boston pair set on the company: Amy Hall Garner’s “Century” (2023), a 100th-birthday gift to her grandfather, and former Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts’s “Ode” (2019), described as “a meditation on the beauty and fragility of life in a time of gun violence.” One upbeat, one sobering, they made for a fine start to the weekend.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's Ashley Green and Chalvar Monteiro in Amy Hall Garner's "Century."

Garner’s sunny “Somewhere in the Middle” was on the program that Paul Taylor Dance Company presented at the Shubert in April 2023. “Century” is another nonstop party, and the score is similar, drawn from grandfather Henry Spooner’s favorites. The upbeat “Basie Land” kicks the piece off in front of a shimmering gold curtain backdrop, the five men in red shirts and tan vests, the five women in poufy rose miniskirts, everyone jiving and jitterbugging incessantly, strutting, promenading, all the while reminding us how balletic Ailey dancers can be. Body parts explode in every direction; partnering is fluid until the fourth of the piece’s seven sections, where to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s “Snowball,” Hannah Alissa Richardson and James Gilmer have a short but sultry duet.

The fifth section of “Century” is preceded by a brief voice-over from the honoree. Jeroboam Bozeman follows that with a luscious solo to Cyrus Chestnut’s “Total Praise,” a moment of reflection before Jimmy Hamilton’s squealing clarinet from Duke Ellington’s “Virgin Land” introduces a swivel-hipping Jacquelin Harris. A leg waggling in the air induces Chalvar Monteiro to join her for a balletic duet; then Steve Allen’s “This Could Be the Start of Something Big” launches the cork-popping finale. Like “Somewhere in the Middle,” “Century” is a fun piece, but it’s Bozeman’s solo that sticks.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Jamar Roberts's "Ode."

Roberts created “Ode” in 2019 during his three-year stint as the company’s resident choreographer. The New York premiere was danced by six men, but Thursday we got Roberts’s alternate version for six women, and that will be the case on Sunday as well. The score is Don Pullen’s 1975 solo piano improvisation “Suite (Sweet) Malcolm (Part 1 Memories and Gunshots),” a tribute to Malcolm X.

Against a floral backdrop suggestive of Kehinde Wiley, Corrin Rachelle Mitchell lies on the floor before rising with angular gesticulations. The others join her, all in pale calf-length dresses. As Pullen’s tolling gives way to nostalgia, the sextet whirl and gyrate, move in unison and mirror image, hold hands for a moment. Some five minutes in, the music turns violent, Pullen splattering machine-gun fire all over the keyboard, everyone freezing as if in a police searchlight. Souls as well as bodies are racked by the bullets; in the midst of Pullen’s banging and pounding, Harris emerges as a solo figure looking for liberation while her five sisters form a kind of Greek chorus. Eventually all six huddle, shrouded in darkness while the floral backdrop is spotlit. There’s a hint of affirmation as the music unwinds, and a group embrace. Then the other five lay Mitchell back down and walk out.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Alvin Ailey's "Revelations."

Both “Century” and “Ode” were well received Thursday, but the roar that greeted the opening tableau of the evening’s final work reminded one that, as always, it’s “Revelations” that everybody comes to see. There’s no mystery here. Ailey’s 64-year-old choreography looks as fresh as ever, responsive as it is to every nuance of the gospel numbers that make up the score. The gull shapes that first appear in “I’ve Been ‘Buked” suggest angels; when in “Fix Me, Jesus” Caroline T. Dartey executes an eye-popping 360-degree turn in seconde and then perches in arabesque on Jermaine Terry’s knee, she’s clearly won her wings. Solomon Dumas, Miranda Quinn, and Ashley Mayeux have as clearly walked through the fire in “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel.” The celebration of “Wade in the Water,” where the Holy Spirit sends bodies into ecstasy, yields just momentarily to Vernard J. Gilmore’s anguished attempt to rise under the weight of sin in “I Wanna Be Ready” and then the trio of Gilmer, Monteiro, and Shawn Cusseaux redeeming themselves with big jetés and zippy pirouettes in “Sinner Man.” Deliverance through dancing is the goal, and no one has ever doubted that “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham” delivers. Amen to that.

What to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: May 4, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 Kentucky Derby Saturday was the 150th running of the high-profile race. Known as the Run for the Roses, the race was the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, famously celebrated with mint juleps, seersucker suits and stylish hats.

Mystik Dan, an 18-1 favorite just prior to race time, won in a stunning photo finish over Forever Young and Sierra Leone.

150th Kentucky Derby

Here's what you need to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby:

Where is the Kentucky Derby held?

The Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Racetrack officials boast that the Run for the Roses is the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the U.S. The Derby dates back to 1875, when the track was called the Louisville Jockey Club.

What time was the Kentucky Derby?

Post time for the Kentucky Derby was 6:57 p.m. EDT. The race is traditionally held on the first Saturday of May and had been on that day for 73 years — from 1946 to 2019 — before the coronavirus pandemic's disruption to everyday life in 2020 moved the Derby to September . It returned to May in 2021 and has since stayed on the first Saturday of the month.

The Derby has been held on every day of the week except for Sunday, but it's been on the first Saturday in May a total of 92 times.

How long is the Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby has been 1 1/4 miles long since 1896. While the dirt track at Churchill Downs is only a mile long, the starting gate and the finish line are in different places, allowing the race to go that extra quarter mile.

What were the Kentucky Oaks results?

The Kentucky Oaks is the all-filly race held a day before the Kentucky Derby. Thorpedo Anna won the so-called Run for the Lilies followed by Just F Y I and Regulatory Risk respectively on a sloppy track in front of a crowd of more than 107,000 on Friday.

How many horses run in the Kentucky Derby?

The field for the Kentucky Derby has been kept to a maximum of 20 horses since 1975. If a horse pulls out, or scratches, from the race in the days leading up to the Derby, additional horses can fill out the field until the scratch deadline. Last year's Derby field featured 18 horses after five scratched from the race.

Who was favored to win the Kentucky Derby?

Fierceness, the winner of March's Florida Derby, was named the morning line favorite by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia with 5-2 odds. The bay colt was followed in the morning line odds by Sierra Leone at 3-1 and Catching Freedom at 8-1.

In the end though, it was Mystik Dan, who had opened at 20-1 odds, who came away with the win.

What horses ran in the Kentucky Derby?

Here's the complete list of the horses running in the Kentucky Derby in order from post closest to the inside of the track out with their morning line odds:

  • Dornoch (20-1)
  • Sierra Leone (3-1)
  • Mystik Dan (20-1)
  • Catching Freedom (8-1)
  • Catalytic (30-1)
  • Just Steel (20-1)
  • Honor Marie (20-1)
  • Just a Touch (10-1)
  • T O Password (30-1)
  • Forever Young (10-1)
  • Track Phantom (20-1)
  • West Saratoga (50-1)
  • Endlessly (30-1)
  • Domestic Product (30-1)
  • Grand Mo the First (50-1)
  • Fierceness (5-2)
  • Stronghold (20-1)
  • Resilience (20-1)
  • Society Man (50-1)
  • Epic Ride (50-1)

How much is the Kentucky Derby purse?

The Kentucky Derby purse was raised to $5 million for the 150th running after being $3 million since 2019. The additional prize money means the winner will collect $3.1 million with $1 million for second place, $500,000 for third, $250,000 for fourth and $150,000 for fifth.

How much are Kentucky Derby ticket prices?

Tickets were still available in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby, starting at $130 and going up to five figures. The big race is the 12th of the day at Churchill Downs — post time for the first race is 10:30 a.m. EDT — with two more races scheduled for Saturday night after the Derby.

The $130 tickets are for general admission to the racetrack's infield. While the area is surrounded by the track, tickets are sold on Ticketmaster with a disclaimer that they don't come with a seat, view of the track or access to the frontside of Churchill Downs and its newly renovated paddock area. The Derby's website says fans can "watch the races from the world's largest 4K video board."

For $275, tickets were available for the part of the infield near the final turn, when the horses make the closing sprint down the homestretch to the finish line. Those tickets also don't have seats or a view of the track, and they have a $52 service fee added on Ticketmaster.

Tickets for reserved seats throughout Churchill Downs were recently being sold for Derby day, ranging from a $750 ticket — plus a $127 fee — to a $3,500 ticket with a $595 fee.

What were the 2023 Kentucky Derby results?

Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with 15-1 odds. The chestnut colt crossed the finish line first with a winning time of 2:01.57 ahead of Two Phil's and Angel of Empire, who came in second and third respectively.

The field rounds turn one during the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky.

What are the fastest Kentucky Derby times?

Secretariat holds the record for the fastest Kentucky Derby time, finishing the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.40 in 1973. Before then, the record was 2 minutes flat, set by Northern Dancer in 1964. In 2001, Monarchos recorded a winning time of 1:59.97 for the second-fastest Derby time .

Mystik Dan finished in 2:03.34.

Notre Dame captured its first title in DI men's lacrosse last season after defeating Duke, 13-9. Syracuse leads all programs with 10 national championships including their most recent championship win in 2009.

*After the 1990 championship, the NCAA Committee on Infractions determined that Paul Gait had played in the 1990 championship while ineligible. Under NCAA rules, Syracuse and Paul Gait's records for that championship were vacated. The NCAA does not recognize Syracuse and coach Roy Simmons Jr.'s 3-0 record, and Paul Gait's 7 goals, 7 assists and his participation in that championship.
