Are you heading to Louisiana? The one thing everyone will tell you is to take a swamp tour. Taking one or more of our recommended Louisiana swamp tours is a must . I’ve even taken four in one week before, they’re so addictive!

Swamp Adventures in Louisiana

Gator tours or Louisiana swamp tours are a must-do when visiting this unique southern US state. I was visiting Louisiana for about ten days, visiting amazing sights and eating as much Cajun food as I could. And during that time, we discovered plenty of fun things to do in Lafayette , like visiting Vermillionville , taking a cooking lesson at Spuddy’s Cajun Foods , and doing all kinds of fun things in New Orleans , I took no less than four swamp tours. I just couldn’t get enough.

We were staying in Lafayette, the smaller and maybe tastier cousin to New Orleans, so one of our first stops was the visitor’s center. The ladies told us all the things to do in the city, but they kept coming back to taking a true Louisiana swamp tour. Apparently one is just not enough. They laughingly suggested one per day.

I have to say, after my first one, I was convinced. Taking swamp tours gets you out into nature, into the stunning vistas of the mossy Louisiana swamps, surrounded by beautiful bald cypress trees. I was enchanted.

While there, I took a private small boat tour, a kayak swamp tour, and two larger swamp boat tours in two different locations. I can honestly say, every single tour was different and worth the money. All of them were fantastic.

Along the way, we learned quite a bit about the flora and fauna from our tour guides. Of course, a lot of what the guides shared depended on their own personality and personal experience in the swamps and bayous. With their musical Cajun accents, knowledge of local lore, plant and animal life, I learned something new each time.

As you know, I love a good animal photo, and each tour was conducted at different times of the day. This facilitated seeing the wildlife in a variety of different behaviors and poses and in different locations. Each tour gave me multiple amazing shots.

All Kinds of Swamp Adventures

During my week in Lafayette, I was able to really get a good feel of the many types of swamp adventures available. Our first tour was a private charter that included Ginny, Jim, the guide, and myself on the boat. That’s it, and aside from a few distant kayakers and anglers, it felt like we had the whole swamp to ourselves. We were in a small motored swamp boat, and our guide was able to turn the motor off and glide in close to a number of animals and alligators before they got spooked and took off.

Kayak Swamp Tour

The second tour I did with Jim and it was my favorite–a kayak swamp tour. This is because I was out there to photograph and see lots of animals and birds. We started right before sunrise and it was mesmerizing to watch the whole area glow in the light of the rising sun and come to life right before our eyes and ears.

The great thing about the kayak tour was the fact that Jim and I could go where we wanted to and not have to rely on the guide to drive us. The kayak was also very quiet and we were able to get up close to many birds.

The downside of the kayak tour was we went too early to see many alligators. We did see some further away, but the mid-day tours provided so many more gator sightings.

We did have one harrowing experience with an alligator as we were finishing our paddle. A gator was just about to catch a garfish for his meal, sans Tabasco unfortunately, and he actually came right out of the water looking like he was going to land in our boat. Luckily he was just as startled as we were and hightailed it in the other direction. I do hope he was able to find breakfast after that.

Alligator Tours

The last two tours I did were both gator tours. Let’s face it, most people taking a swamp tour are there to see alligators and expectations run high. We were there in an October which, thankfully, is right before they go into their dormancy period. For a few months each winter, usually from about November to February, alligators go into a burrow and wait for the cold weather to pass.

So, we were extremely happy to see plenty of alligators on our swamp boat tours. On one we saw a mother who was watching over her brood of month-old hatchlings and the guide also fed the gators chicken so they were all around the boat.

Both guides on these larger group tours told us the names and personalities of each alligator, as well as plenty of stories and local lore. The gator tours were about an hour long, and probably the most popular type of tour to take.

The Wildlife

If you are like me and love seeing animals and birds in their natural habitats, you will love taking a swamp boat tour.

We saw so many birds, like anhingas, egrets, and blue herons. Let alone a real Woody Woodpecker (pileated woodpecker) and of course some I couldn’t capture on camera.

We also saw plenty of other wildlife, like spiders, wasps, turtles, raccoons, and, of course, alligators galore.

Final Thoughts

If you are visiting Louisiana, take it from me, and the ladies in the Lafayette visitor center, and take a few (definitely more than one) Cajun Swamp Tour. You won’t regret it and you will see such amazing things. Pick different times of the day as well as different operators to really get a good taste of what’s out there.

The bayou boat

The only way to get the full Cajun experience is on the Bon Ami. A traditional crawfish skiff, these lightweight aluminum boats were designed to navigate the swamps, bayous, and marshes of the Atchafalaya Basin. Best Airboat Tour: Airboat Adventures – Small Airboat Tour

Price: From $89 Duration: 2 hours

For a classic airboat swamp tour in New Orleans, choose Airboat Adventures. With this tour operator, you can expect interesting guides and multiple glimpses of alligators as you weave through 20,000-plus acres of cypress swamps. After your roughly two-hour airboat ride, take some time to explore the company's indoor facility, which houses Sugar, an albino gator.

While tours are available in both small (10 people) and large (30 people) boats, recent tourgoers recommend opting for a small boat tour, as the small airboats can access more remote corners of the swamp.

Pregnant women, children younger than 5 and people with back and neck injuries are not permitted to ride on the airboats. Pets, including service animals, are also prohibited due to the loud noise from the boat. The company provides ear protection, but you may want to bring your own if you are extra sensitive.

Transportation: Hotel pickup and dropoff is available for those staying at hotels in Greater New Orleans; the cost is $30 per person. If you'll be driving to the tour departure point, it's located at 5145 Fleming Park Road, Lafitte, LA 70067 .

Best Kayak Tour: New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours – Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour

Price: From $75 Duration: 2 hours

Novice kayakers will appreciate this paddle in Manchac Swamp, as it's especially suitable for beginners. During the tour, you'll wind your way through the swamp's calm waters and take a gander at the local wildlife.

For an even more memorable experience, take the early morning or evening tour to see the swamp bathed in warm light. Summer and early fall tours will give you the best chance for seeing alligators and turtles. Reviewers say you'll gain lots of insight not only about the area's ecology but also about local history.

Cajun Encounters' daily tour of the Honey Island Swamp takes place on a flat-bottomed boat. Each ride includes commentary from a friendly guide as you look for alligators, wild boar, owls and more. Tourists say the guides are informative and fun and highly recommend the tour, but caution there are many bugs.

Transportation: Hotel pickup and dropoff is included in the rates noted above; cheaper tickets are available for those who can drive to the tour location ( 55345 U.S. Route 90, Slidell, LA 70461 ).

Cajun Encounters also runs VIP tours (which have up to 10 to 12 passengers) as well as tours of the city.

From the experienced, knowledgeable guides to the amiable shuttle drivers, travelers consistently praise Louisiana Tour Company's swamp boat tour. They also appreciate that boats have cushioned seats, a roof and windows to help maximize comfort in all weather. The boats also have restrooms. During the almost two-hour tour, you'll see a Native American burial mound, a fishing village, numerous critters and beautiful swamplands.

Transportation: Transportation to and from your hotel is included in the rates noted above. However, cheaper tickets are available for those who can drive to the tour location ( 9706 Barataria Blvd., Marrero, LA 70072 ).

Louisiana Tour Company also operates airboat swamp tours.

Best Zip Line Tour: Zip NOLA – Swamp Zipline Tour

Price: From $91 Duration: 1.5 hours

See the swamps from above on this adrenaline-inducing tour. The 1.5-hour experience includes five different zip lines, a spiral tree staircase and two sky bridges for prime views of the swamps (and the creatures that lurk in them) below. Recent travelers highly recommend this tour, noting they felt safe throughout. Others note that it's good for beginners.

While there is no age minimum, children must weigh at least 45 pounds to zip line; the maximum weight limit is 280 pounds. This tour is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant or suffers from back pain or serious medical conditions.

Transportation: Round-trip transportation from New Orleans is available for an additional $25 per person. Otherwise, you can drive to the attraction ( 301 Peavine Road, Laplace, LA 70068 ).

Frequently Asked Questions

You can expect to pay at least $50 per person for a swamp tour that includes transportation; if you have a rental car for your trip to New Orleans, you can save some coin by driving to the tour location. Fees also vary depending on the company and type of vessel used to explore the swamps.

If alligators are your top reason for trekking to the swamp, plan for a spring or summer tour, as alligators enter a state of brumation (a modified period of hibernation) during the cold weather months.

Perhaps the most famous swamp in New Orleans is Honey Island. For those interested in visiting this swamp exclusively, Honey Island Swamp Tours and Cajun Encounters are both great options.

You'll want to dress casually for your swamp tour in New Orleans – a T-shirt and shorts or lightweight pants is ideal. You'll also want to bring a light jacket in case you get chilly or it rains during your tour.

Some swamp tour boats (not airboats), such as those operated by the Louisiana Tour Company , offer bathrooms, while others do not. If this is important to you, be sure to double-check whether or not this amenity is offered when booking.

On this tour, you will enjoy a fully narrated swamp tour by one of our local captains on the comfort of a swamp tour boat. Our tour boats feature a roof, cushioned seats, windows that can be raised or lowered for the weather, restroom, and plenty of standing and walking room. You may even experience a close encounter with some of the local swamp life. The swamp tour by Tourboat with pick-up does include ground transportation.

They have a roof, restroom, cushioned seats, and windows that can be raised or lowered during cold or rainy weather, along with plenty of standing and walking room. These tours are entertaining, educational and exciting. It provides you with a relaxing view of our beautiful swamps.

• Chevron down Swamp Tour by Tourboat – Pickup

If you have chosen our Swamp Tour by Tour Boat that includes transportation, you will be picked up at the curb of your hotel. Pick up begins at the starting time of 8:00am, 10:20am, 12:30pm or 3:00pm (seasonal) daily, depending on which tour time you selected. We use our sister company, “Alert Transportation” for the ground transportation service. We ask for up to 30 minutes for the pick up service. Our drivers go hotel to hotel for the pick-up process. Travel time is about 35 to 40 minutes to the swamp tour dock from New Orleans. After arrival, you will go to the ticket booth to get your boarding pass. You will be on the swamp tour boat for 1 hour 40 minutes. As soon as all passengers board the minibus after the tour, the driver will return you back to your hotel.
