AdBlocker-iOS requires an iOS platform (duh!) running iOS 4 or higher. ARC should be disabled for these classes, which can be done by adding the -fno-objc-arc flag in Build Phases. These frameworks/libraries should be linked to your project:

Adding AdBlocker-iOS to your project

Simply drag and drop the 6 class files to your project (don't forget the ARC thingy mentioned, if your project uses it). Drag and drop the adblocker_list.txt to your project bundle, making it accessible for later use.

Background Info & Usage

AdBlocker-iOS is based on examining the regular expressions in a easylist and then determining if a URL passes (allow) or fails (block). The main function for this is - (BOOL)examineURL:(NSString *)url; , which returns YES if it needs to be blocked or NO if it can be allowed. Before any of this can be done, you'll need to first load a list of regular expressions. Fortunately, this project comes with the default easylist 2.0 ("adblock_list.txt") that you can use. Here's how you can do it:

The "DOCUMENTS" is a macro for your Documents folder where the adblock_list.txt is stored. This can be changed to your [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"adblock_list" forType:@"txt"]; but its preferred to move the list to your Documents folder (or any other r/w folder) for updating purposes. There are two methods you can use to intercept a UIWebView's request to process a URL: Custom NSURLCache and UIWebView's Delegate .

A custom NSURLCache class will allow you to "nullify" any data request sent out. To do this, import the "FilteredWebCache.h" and override your shared NSURLCache as such:

• Processing speeds for AdBlocker-iOS aren't so top-notch as one would like them to be. That's not to say though that the waiting period is that noticeable (~0.4 second/URL – that's just a rough guess). This is largely due to the fact that RegexKit is not available for iOS, so many of the caching features are subsequently unavailable.
• The update URL can be customized to your own if you want to issue your own adblock lists; however, make sure you follow the ADP filtering guidelines for each URL rule you design.

In some cases, filtering may not work and ads may still be displayed even though AdGuard for Safari and the proper filters are enabled. This usually happens when something goes wrong with filter updates due to Safari bugs.

How to fix ​

• Open Safari.
• Click Safari in the left upper corner menu.
• Click Settings… → Extensions .

• Restart Safari.
• Return to Settings... → Extensions and re-enable the content-blocking extensions.
• Open AdGuard for Safari app.
• Go to Filters .
• Click Check for updates .
• Do not close the AdGuard for Safari window until the filters are updated.

It would appear that your current configuration is not compatible with the type of checks carried out by this tool. However, please note that this does not mean that there is a lack of protection provided by the solution you have configured, such as an ad blocking extension, a VPN or a DNS. The limitations of JavaScript or the absence of certain features may prevent the test from being able to accurately determine the number of connections that are blocked. You will still receive an estimate of the percentage of connections that have been blocked/detected by this tool

How I can have 100%

A green score indicates a satisfactory level of protection. There is no need to aim for a perfect score. About uBlock Origin

In 2014 uBlock Origin’s founder, original author and lead developer, Raymond Hill, created the original uBlock extension, with its development initiated by forking the codebase of HTTP Switchboard with a separate blocking extension, uMatrix, which had been previously designed for advanced users. The initial uBlock was developed by Raymond Hill in order to enable community-maintained block lists while simultaneously adding additional features and upgrading the code quality to proper release standards. First released in June 2014 as an exclusive Chrome and Opera extension, in late 2015 the initial uBlock extension expanded to other browsers under its current name – uBlock Origin. (occasionally represented globally as – uBlock₀).

Developer Nik Rolls then officially released uBlock Origin for the Microsoft Edge browser in December 2016.

In January 2017, uBlock Origin was added to the repositories for Debian 9 , and Ubuntu (16.04), and the uBlock Origin extension was awarded the prestigious IoT honor of “Pick of the Month” by Mozilla.

As of 2024, uBlock Origin continues to be maintained and actively developed by founder and lead developer Raymond Hill.

The uBlock Origin extension remains an industry leading, open-source, cross-platform browser extension with software developed specifically for multiple platform use, and as of 2024, uBlock Origin’s extension is available for several of the most widely used browsers, including: Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Opera, Firefox and all Safari releases prior to 13.
