I went on a 3-day camping and hiking trip led by REI's travel company — here's why I recommend REI Adventures to anyone

  • REI doesn't just sell outdoor gear — it also offers excursions across the world via its travel company, REI Adventures .
  • REI Adventures has more than 250 guided trips for a variety of activity levels, durations, and activities.
  • I attended a trip to Pinnacles National Park and was impressed with the entire experience REI curated.

Insider Today

My alarm jostled me awake at 5 a.m. PT, around the same time I'd usually wake up on the East coast. But instead of getting dressed for work, I layered up in comfortable gear, made sure my daypack had enough water in it, and rolled out of my tent, ready as I would ever be for a sunrise hike in Pinnacles National Park.

I owed this unique opportunity to REI Adventures , the travel company arm of outdoor co-op REI , which has been guiding adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts on these trips since 1987. This hiking and camping excursion through one of the country's newest national parks is just one of the many outdoor adventures it offers around the world.

If the idea of an "outdoor adventure" sounds intimidating or intense, don't be discouraged. REI Adventures offers trips for a wide variety of activity levels, durations, and activities, so you can find one that suits your comfort level and interests. The more important point is to get you outdoors ( your body and mind will thank you for it ) with less hassle and work.

See below for a glimpse into what my experience was like on an REI Adventures trip through Pinnacles National Park. At the end of this review, I've also included answers to a series of FAQs such as how long each REI Adventures trip is and how much it costs to attend.

rei adventures trips

After arriving at the park, we jumped right into the sunny afternoon with a five-mile hike.

rei adventures trips

Our group of nine people total (seven participants and two guides) traversed mountainous terrain, stopping to admire distinctive rock formations and attempt to spot the elusive California condor. We learned a bit about the history of the park, its geography, and its notable features.

With our first hike checked off and our bodies sufficiently warmed up, we drove back to the campground to set up camp. Everything for our trip fit in this van and small trailer.

rei adventures trips

Packed into the trailer were tents, cooking equipment, food supplies for all three days, and camping chairs.

The guides showed us how to set up our tents, which were surprisingly easy to assemble, even for a novice like me.

rei adventures trips

I haven't camped in at least 10 years, so I was a little nervous about having to set up my own tent. But thanks to the clear direction of our guides and the simple design of the tents, I had my humble abode set up in no time.

In case you're wondering, we slept in these airy REI Co-op Kingdom 4 Tents ($399). Since I don't camp often, I appreciated that these were provided to us. I wouldn't use it enough if I bought one for myself, and I also have nowhere to store it in my own apartment.

They also provided us with sleeping pads, small personal tables, and a woven mat to make the tent feel more comfortable. It was a nice and thoughtful touch.

rei adventures trips

The guides are expert camp cooks and have all the equipment and food supplies necessary to make delicious meals ...

rei adventures trips

... which meant everyone else in the group got to sit back and enjoy a drink by the campfire as we rested from our hike.

rei adventures trips

I wouldn't mind helping make dinner, but I have to admit it also felt great not worrying about any of our meals throughout the trip. Our main task that evening was to be on the lookout for wily, hungry raccoons.

And all the meals were amazing. I didn't expect to eat this well on an outdoors trip, where I'm usually getting by on dried meats, squished sandwiches, and mysterious stews.

rei adventures trips

Our first dinner included salad, salmon, pork loin, and potatoes.

If you have food restrictions or allergies, don't worry — our guides were careful and attentive about concerns like keto or dairy-free diets in our group and always had alternatives available.

Seriously, I don't even eat breakfasts this balanced and filling at home.

rei adventures trips

Not having to prepare food, then filling ourselves with the delicious meals, meant we had plenty of energy to attack each day's activities. The guides also carried snacks and prepared picnic-worthy lunch spreads during our hikes.

Of course, our guides were more than excellent cooks. Having personally scouted destinations and led countless trips before us, they were experts — professional, friendly, and energetic to boot.

rei adventures trips

I felt confident in their capable hands as they led us through noteworthy parts of the park, and I learned a lot about the wildlife and geology of Pinnacles. The guides are also great resources for types of outdoor gear you should carry, cool parks and hikes around the world, and other tidbits of outdoors knowledge.

They showed us different rocks ...

rei adventures trips

... exposed us to woodsy areas that made Pinnacles feel like a completely different park ...

rei adventures trips

... and took us into the dark and exciting caves that Pinnacles is so well known for.

rei adventures trips

On the morning of the last day, we embarked on a short sunrise hike to Bear Gulch Reservoir, where we enjoyed breakfast and some quiet time.

rei adventures trips

It's not often I can watch the sun rise and listen to the birds and other animals come alive in the morning, so I relished the respite from city life.

Overall, I also enjoyed the company of my group.

rei adventures trips

When you go on a trip with REI Adventures, chances are you'll be traveling with like-minded people. Everyone may have different backgrounds and interests in different outdoor activities, but you're ultimately bonded by a love of the outdoors.

REI says that half of its trip participants are solo travelers, so trips are an excellent opportunity to meet new people. There are also friends, couples, and families who travel together.

The bottom line: Explore the outdoors with REI Adventures.

rei adventures trips

Thanks to these standout features from my experience, I wouldn't hesitate to go on another trip through REI Adventures.

  • The guides:  The organization, expertise, and friendliness of the guides are everything. They make the trips both fun and informative.
  • The convenience:  Annoying hassles like large, expensive equipment and detailed itineraries are all taken care of, so you can enjoy your destination even more.
  • The destinations:  Since the outdoor destinations are living, breathing entities, there's never any guarantee that you'll be able to see a specific animal or capture a specific view on your camera. However, there's no questioning that they're beautiful, interesting places to explore and appreciate.

rei adventures trips

Where are the REI Adventures trips offered?

At the time of this writing, there are more than 100 trips you can choose from — all of which are domestic. REI previously offered trips around the world and on every continent, even Antarctica , but has since altered its offerings in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to the pandemic, REI Adventures had trips that would allow you to kayak and zip line in Costa Rica , hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu , make the classic base camp trek at Everest, and more.

Though those are on pause currently, you can still narrow your search by a number of domestic regions or destinations to find one that fits where you want to travel (e.g. national parks).

How long are REI Adventures trips?

There are trips that are three days long, 23 days long, and everything in between. That means you can take a quick weekend trip when you're craving proximity to nature more involved than looking at your desk plant or collect all your vacation days to embark on an adventure of a lifetime. The majority of REI Adventures trips are three to nine days long.

Are REI Adventures trips strenuous?

No. Each trip has a number rating from 1 (relaxed) to 5 (strenuous). While a relaxed trip will involve a few hours of activity on flat terrain and with little or no elevation gain, a strenuous trip is designed for very active travelers and includes 10+ hours of activity per day, steep ascents and descents, elevation changes of up to 4,000 feet per day, and altitudes topping 14,000 feet.

About half of the available trips have a 3 rating (moderate), which is suitable for outdoor novices and casual recreationalists. While browsing trips, you can filter by activity level rating and gauge which ones are most appropriate for you.

How much do REI Adventures trips cost and what's included?

The trips range from $759 to more than $10,000 per person. They're pricey but there are a couple of factors to consider: REI members get significant discounts, and the price is inclusive of things like park fees, meals, camping tents, cooking equipment, some transportation, and professional guiding expertise.

Beyond the cost of expensive outdoor equipment, you might want to consider the price tag you put on convenience and expertise. If you're willing and able to pay for a less stressful outdoor experience in which someone else handles all the research and costs of itinerary design and equipment, then you should seriously consider an REI Adventures trip.

I've signed up for an REI Adventures trip. Now what?

After you sign up and submit a deposit, you'll get access to a portal where you can review everything you need to prepare for the trip. This includes a checklist of the gear you need to bring, forms about your medical history and physical fitness, and the option to purchase travel insurance.

In the days leading up to your trip, you'll also receive a final itinerary that includes the details of each day, as well as important contact information.

What else can I expect from my REI Adventures trip?

As part of an REI-sponsored media trip, I went on a shortened version of the Pinnacles National Park trip — it was three days instead of four, but the rest of the experience remained the same.

Keep reading to learn about all the details, including the tents we stayed in, the food we ate, and the guides who led us through the journey.

Young Women on adventure travel trip with REI Adventures

REI travelers enjoy nature and being active outdoors. They get excited to put on a pair of hiking boots and hit the trail for a several hour excursion in the wilderness.  The space in your suitcase that might have been dedicated to makeup, ties, jewelry, or cufflinks is replaced with outdoor travel accessories.

Getting out in nature with REI includes intense physically active experiences. REI travelers aren’t scared off by doing hard core activities like extreme whitewater rafting, trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro or going on a safari to Antarctica.

These travelers travel because they want to experience the outdoors. That said, it's also nice to slow down and get some cultural experiences in too, something REI Adventures offers to their active travelers that need a moment to rest and unwind.

hiking with REI Adventures

Everyone from travelers who simply love nature and the outdoors to hard core adventure travelers who love chasing adrenaline highs will be right at home on a trip with REI. However, because their core focus is in active travel, a certain level of physical fitness is expected for each traveler.

REI travelers encompass a wide range of ages, but the core age group is between 18-40 . On Family Friendly trips it is recommended that children be no younger than 8 years old as all activities are very hands on and even intense. Not all activities will be open to the younger travelers in the group, but these trips are specifically designed to make sure everyone has something fun to do.

Top Destinations

Trekking trail in Nepal with REI Adventures

REI Adventures offers departures on all 7 continents, with an impressive number of Antarctica tours available. They have three categories to sort through destinations which include Regions, National Parks and Featured.

Regions include Africa , Antarctica , Asia , Australia & New Zealand , Central America , Europe , North America and South America . They offer trips to national parks such as Bryce Canyon, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon. Featured destinations include places like the Alps and Machu Picchu .

Whatever the destination, travelers can expect to experience the outdoors like they never had before. Travelers will get to do it all from hiking to climbing or kayaking .

REI Adventures Travel Style

Coffee at the fire on REI Adventure camping trip

Each of REI’s 150 trips are rated 1 through 5 for activity level. Level 1 (relaxed) includes trips to Tanzania and Botswana with activities such as going on a wildlife safari or hiking . Level 2 (easy active) include trips to Thailand and Italy with activities such as kayaking , hiking and going on a cruise .

Trips rated 1 and 2 are ideal for families with younger kids, older travelers seeking some invigoration without, you know, climbing cliffs or barreling through whitewater, or completely novice active outdoor travelers.

Each level after the first two increase in difficulty. Level 3 stands for moderate; 4 stands for vigorous and level 5 stands for strenuous. Trips that are rated Moderate are also great for novices, but those interested in a slightly bigger challenge physically. Those trips rated 4 and 5 often require a doctor’s note to ensure you are aware of the risk, and able to keep up with the physical demands. These may include 10+ hours of extreme activity a day with dramatically changing elevations and steep uneven terrain.

REI Adventures focuses on great outdoor experiences which means accommodations are also outdoor and nature focused. Camping is a common accommodation style, but you usually won’t be required to do your own set up or break down. In most cases (not all) hot running water is available. Other types of accommodations include rustic lodges, and basic hotels.

How difficult are REI Adventures trips physically?

This will vary by the trip, but in general it will be good to expect some parts of the trip to be physically challenging, relative to the trip classification. REI separates their trips into five main categories:

1.  Relaxed : These trips are ideal for new adventurers with no background in active travel. They usually involve easy hikes - expect to walk no more than 3 miles a day, and to be active between 1-3 hours a day. Elevation changes are rare, so most hiking and walking is relatively flat. Great for families with young kids looking to enjoy being out in the fresh air!

2.  Easy Active : Another good option for families or slightly older travelers looking to push their limits. These trips are active and exciting without being extreme. Expect to be active between 2-5 hours a day, hiking up to 6 miles; cycling between 10-30 miles.

3.  Moderate : Here’s where it begins to get more challenging - though REI states that these trips are perfectly doable for novices to outdoor travel. Expect to be active between 4-6 hours most days, and covering distances of up to 10 miles for hiking; between 20-40 miles for cycling.

3a.  Moderate plus : Moderate plus indicates that some experience in active outdoor travel would be beneficial. These trips are a combination of Moderate and Vigorous activities.

4.  Vigorous : These trips are best suited to those travelers with a bit of active travel already under their belt, and basic outdoor travel skills are recommended. Or at least willing to undergo some training to be ready and able to keep up with the group. You’ll be active for between 5-8 hours a day, hiking 12 miles most days; cycling between 30-50 miles.

5.  Strenuous : This designation is reserved for long distance trekking, dramatic changes in elevation, and it is required that travelers be fit and able bodied. A doctor’s note is required for you to be permitted on these tours. Expect consistently uneven terrain, and long days of activity - hiking 12 miles or more, or cycling 50 miles or more. Prepare to be active upwards of 10 hours a day.

Why REI Adventures?

Arizona national park tour REI Adventures

For an exhilarating and invigorating deep dive into nature and the outdoors, choose REI Adventures. If you love being active and pushing your limits with activities like climbing, white water rafting or mountain biking, you’ll feel right at home with REI.

With nature and outdoors travel comes a lower level of luxury. Most accommodations include camping and rustic lodges. REI travelers embrace the sleeping arrangements and even joy the extra level of immersion into the outdoors. If the idea of sleeping in a tent or potentially not having running water isn’t the level of luxury you’re looking for when you travel, REI adventures may not be for you.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is required when traveling with REI. Due to the potentially dangerous and risky nature of adventure travel, REI has a partnership with TripAssure, and recommend all travelers purchase the “Adventure Protection Plan” which you can do through REI. Should you choose to purchase independently, know that certain events that can arise from active travel may not be covered, so do so at your own risk.

REI Adventures Offers Great Active Travel Trips

From Rafting in Alaska to Hiking in the Alps—REI Adventures has Great Trips

James O'Neil/Getty

While everyone is aware of it, outdoor gear retailer REI also happens to offer an outstanding array of adventure travel opportunities too. The company's aptly-named  REI Adventures  has an exciting – and surprising deep – catalog of great active travel itineraries to take clients around the globe, ranging from weekend getaways to three-week vacations, with plenty to do in between.

Guests on an REI Adventure can go canoeing, sea kayaking, or rafting in such varied locales as Alaska , Iceland , and Thailand . Those who prefer to travel on foot or bike can go hiking or bicycling in places as exotic as Hungary and Vietnam , or while exploring France's Provence region instead. If you're seeking a multi-sport adventure , excellent wildlife viewing, or a climbing trip, chances are REI Adventures will have something that can meet your needs both in remote locations around the world, as well as right here in the U.S.

It's easy to find trips on the website

REI Adventures's offers more than 250 active trips on its website, with options to visit every continent on the planet, including Antarctica. With such a vast catalog to sift through, it is important that the site be speedy and easy to navigate. Fortunately both are true, making it a simple affair to search for trips based on continent, country, or by a specific sport or activity.

REI Adventures is part of the REI retail chain, which has more than 150 stores spread out across the U.S. Those outlets – along with the REI website – are chock-full of equipment and clothing designed specifically with outdoor enthusiasts and adventure travelers in mind. And if you prefer to travel with a company that gives back to the world around us, it is important to point out that in 2016 the company donated nearly 70% of its profits to causes that are near and dear to its heart, not to mention those of its members .  Some of those causes include protecting and restoring the environment, increasing access to outdoor activities, and encouraging involvement in responsible outdoor recreation.

Some of the more popular REI Adventures trips include  hiking in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks , trekking to Everest Base Camp, and taking a classic safari in Tanzania. The company offers new trips on a regular basis, is constantly updating its itineraries, and offers a mix of traditional adventure travel options with opportunities to visit emerging destinations that remain a bit more off the beaten path too.

But that's not all. REI Adventures can also offer private tours for those looking for something a bit more custom tailored to their needs. The company also organizes family excursions and has a set of trips designed specifically for the under-35 crowd . Chances are, if you like to travel, you'll find something that fits your needs with REI Adventures.

For those looking for further information on what REI Adventures has to offer, the company's website provides an excellent set of FAQ's to help answer potential questions. The site can even help you purchase the proper travel insurance for coverage throughout your trip and offers advice for solo travelers too. Essentially, it is a good resource for anyone planning or considering a trip with the outfitter.

Adventures for the Ladies

REI has also taken an active role in getting more women involved with the outdoors as well. To that end, it has launched the "Force of Nature" program which provides hundreds of women-only classes and seminars, as well as promoting female-specific gear for use on their adventures.

But REI and REI Adventures have also paired with one another to create the Outessa program as well. These three-day weekends are also strictly ladies-only, offering women a chance to learn new outdoor skills and sports – such as mountain biking and climbing – in safe, supervised environments with all the necessary gear provided. The Outessa camps are held in places like California and New Hampshire, allowing as many women as possible to take part. And with more than 1000 events to choose from, there are plenty of adventure to be had.

If those weekend getaways aren't enough however, REI Adventures also has a slate of women's only trips that are longer and more comprehensive too, taking participants to the ends of the Earth, and beyond.

Rei co-op adventure travel adds 10 new trips to meet demand for most popular destinations and buys property near grand canyon to build signature camp.

New hiking, paddling and cycling itineraries from California to Maine now actively booking

SEATTLE , Feb. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading adventure travel operator  REI Co-op  added 10 trips as part of its expansion to meet demand of its most popular destinations and introduced new itineraries to California's wine country, Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness, the Pacific Northwest and more. At the same time, REI purchased 20 acres near the Grand Canyon to build its latest signature camp, which will open in spring 2025.

"For more than three decades, we've led trips to the some of the most remote and storied locales in the U.S. and Canada . Each REI adventure trip is an immersive experience that our guests will remember for a lifetime," said Mark Seidl , divisional vice president of REI Experiences. "Our expansion reflects the trust instilled in our brand to offer unmatched small group adventure travel from coast to coast."

New destinations On REI's new Maine Hiking – Appalachian Trail 100-Mile Wilderness (Lodge Based) , guests spend six days exploring the heart of northern Maine's famed 100-Mile Wilderness. Local guides lead the journey into the wild northern woods to explore some of best daily hikes the route has to offer. The 100-Mile Wilderness route is the name of the next-to-last section of the Appalachian trail on its 2,180-mile route from Springer Mountain, Georgia , to Katahdin in Maine . Pristine lakes, river gorges and waterfalls await hikers. Evenings are enjoyed in the International Dark Sky Park at Medawisla Lodge and Gorman Chairback Lodge, both set on the banks of ponds where guests are invited to paddle and fish.

A four-day Tennessee Hiking – Big South Fork (Lodge Based) itinerary immerses guests in the unique history of the Cumberland Plateau. The adventure begins at the oldest surviving utopian community that was developed as an English Colony following the Civil War where people of all races, genders and economic standing could have a fresh start. Days include relaxed hikes to swimming holes and overlooks to breathtaking views as well as exploration of Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail named after Daniel Boone who was given the name Sheltowee when he was adopted by Chief Blackfish of the Shawnee tribe. Accommodations include a historic inn and rustic, restored cabins complete with family-style meals and kerosene lanterns.

Signature camp expansion Last year, REI doubled the size of its  Bryce Canyon National Park signature camp  to meet ongoing demand of its popular trips in the park. At the exclusive property, guests enjoy camping at its finest through spacious tents and sleeping cots, delicious guide prepared meals, private bathrooms and showers, and other special touches. Each year, Bryce Canyon National Park is one of REI's most sought-after destinations.

The company's latest addition is a five-day Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef Hiking Adventure . The trip begins in the heart of Utah's best-kept secret, Capitol Reef National Park . Named after the white Navajo sandstone domes, the land resembles a "reef," an impressive geological marvel warping the Earth's crust for almost 100 miles. Guests discover the distinct charm and rugged beauty by hiking less traveled trails. After a stay at a cozy lodge, the group travels to the otherworldly Bryce Canyon National Park . Two incredible days explore the remarkable geological playground of vibrantly colored hoodoos (sandstone spires) that create a magical landscape. Nights are spent at REI's signature camp where stargazing is unparalleled. A local astronomer leads a galaxy tour with high-powered telescopes to teach guests about the planets and deep space.

To date, REI operates three signature camps at Bryce Canyon National Park , Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Zion National Park spanning 13 itineraries across all three properties. The co-op recently purchased a 20-acre property in Williams, Arizona adjacent to Grand Canyon National Park . Next spring, REI will open a self-sustaining signature camp that prioritizes its impact on the planet, building on the current assortment of 14 trips currently offered in Grand Canyon that range from three to eight days.

Adventure travel on the west coast  Adventures in California and Washington repeatedly rank among the top destinations for REI travelers. Joining the company's Evergreen State assortment is an immersive six-day adventure in the heart of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic treasures, Mount Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park . Guests on Washington Hiking – Mount Rainier & Olympic National Park (Lodge Based)  explore the pristine wilderness of Mount Rainier through hikes to breathtaking meadows, cascading waterfalls, and awe-inspiring views of the majestic volcanic wonder. After a stay at the historic lodge nestled in the national park, the adventure continues to the enchanting Olympic National Park . There, travelers experience crashing waves of the untamed shoreline, marvel at the surreal beauty of the Hoh Rainforest, and trek in the unspoiled alpine wilderness of Hurricane Ridge.

For weekend adventurers who wish to play near the Emerald City, REI's new Seattle Hiking, Cycling and Kayaking Adventure (Lodge Based)  is an ideal option. Guests spend three action-packed days exploring Seattle's highlights by boats, bikes and boots. Kayak from Lake Union to the Puget Sound via the historic Ballard Locks , cycle the charming community of Bainbridge Island and hike the Cascades' forested trails. Each day discovers the region's most beloved outdoor spaces, and nights are spent at Seattle's most famous waterfront accommodation, The Edgewater Hotel.

With 35 itineraries across California , it's no surprise the state ranks among REI's top destinations where guests explore coastlines, national parks and more. A new five-day  California Wine Country Hiking: Napa & Sonoma (Lodge Based)  trip is an enchanting adventure through wine country. Guests delve into the world of eco-friendly winemaking by indulging their senses with tastings and ambiance of renowned wineries that perfected their craft over generations. Hikes traverse ancient redwood forests, shaded trails, panoramic vistas and lakes heighten the experience.
