Reviews From Our Guests

“We had the most amazing experience with both the scenic and whitewater rafting adventure! Our scenic guide, Jake, was knowledgeable and kind. Our whitewater raft guide, Spencer, was totally funny, knowledgeable, and personable. An awesome trip indeed!!! Totally recommend.”

Veronica Nelson

“I am not a person who regularly writes reviews, but our family of four had the most amazing experience with Teton Whitewater. 100% of the staff members we encountered were exceptionally friendly and helpful. You can tell that the employees care about making sure the rafting experience is fun and exciting for everyone. The bathrooms and rented wetsuits were clean and in good condition. I had some questions before the trip and my emails were always answered within 15 minutes of when I sent them. Our guide, Spencer, was outstanding. It was obvious that he was experienced and knowledgeable. Our raft had a great time getting to know each other and Spencer made sure he got to know each of us, as well. As we drove away after the trip my two teenagers said that this experience was the coolest thing we have ever done on a trip. Thank you all for the great family experience that will last a lifetime.”

Abigail Turgeon

“Most fun I have had in years! Awesome adventure with the best staff imaginable. I could not have been happier with my experience.”

“Just an all around great experience! The staff is so kind and friendly. I felt like I was among friends from the moment I walked in the door. The float was beautiful. The bus ride had great music. I felt like safety was a high priority throughout the entire event. Everyone in our group left with a smile and some incredible memories. Thanks so much for an awesome river experience!!”

About our Family Run Business! Jackson Hole Whitewater

Bookings for 2024 are open.

Voted the #1 rafting company in Jackson Hole.

Jackson Hole Whitewater and it’s entire crew are looking forward to meeting you this Summer. Jackson Hole Whitewater is a small family run operation dedicated to ensuring you the best of the best in service and safety. The Tibbitts family is proud to enter the 61st season of Jackson Hole Whitewater! We offer Whitewater and Jackson Hole Scenic Float Trips beginning the first week of May through September.

We are located in the town of Jackson Hole, about 30 minutes from Grand Teton National Park and about an hour from Yellowstone National Park. You can book online or if you would like to talk to one of our professional staff, give us a call. See you on the river!

This is a class lll river, with 8-10 sets of some real fun rapid, perfect for people of all ages and experience. River classifications are graded on a scale of I to VI. Class I is flat water. Class V is the most difficult. After every section of whitewater you go through there is a calm section following. This is a very wide and deep river! Some sections are up to 80 feet deep. This is a good thing as the shallower rivers can be very technical and rated upper V’s. This is a great family river! Also, a great river for all ages who like some big waves. *****Please note that scenic float times and whitewater trips on the Snake River can vary during the season. Call us if you need more details on the timing of any scenic or whitewater trip when you are in town. The times listed are estimated and do vary from week to week and month to month.

customer testimonials

Jackson Hole Whitewater and it’s entire crew are looking forward to meeting you so you can join our satisfied customers list. If you had fun please leave a review as a future guide to all who are seeking some outdoor excitement and fun.

The last time I was in Jackson Hole we did not whitewater raft and I was bummed. So this time I made sure it was the first to do item on my list. The hotel had booked the outfit so I didn’t research too much but I was told that it was the smallest more intimate outfit on the river so that made me feel very good about my booking. We were picked up promptly from our hotel by one of the owners sons in a very comfortable Mercedez Sprinter and from there we were taken care of throughout the entire experience. There was breakfast items laid out for us upon arrival to the shop and all the staff was so friendly! Everything went so smoothly that it made the excitement for the rafting that much more exciting.

I have gone rafting with JHWW for the past three years, and have had immensely enjoyed myself each time. The staff was very friendly and made the trip a blast ! I had the opportunity to go with my favorite guide, Captain Ron, on two of my trips, and he made sure to offer me the “wettest seat” on the raft ! I loved it !! Right up front where I got to see what to expect….big rapids ! I had the chance to meet the owner, David Tibbitts, and it shows that he really loves his job because of all the effort he puts forth to make sure everyone is happy, and comfortable. JHWW really makes you feel like you are part of “their” family when you go rafting with them. I am going to do the combo trip next year, so I can enjoying the relaxing scenic part of the trip, as well as the whitewater rapid part…I can’t wait ! Keep up the great work !

Jackson Hole Whitewater is Outstanding

In august, we had the pleasure of rafting with Jackson Hole Whitewater. When we arrived, we had no idea what type of trip we wanted to take. After talking with their friendly office staff, we chose the scenic portion of the river. Our guide Krystal was extremely knowledgeable of the river and the area and answered the many questions that we had. The lunch they provide on the river was perfect. On top of the many bald eagles we saw the highlight of the trip was actually seeing a herd of elk cross the river! If we ever have the fortune to make it back to Jackson, rafting with Jackson Hole Whitewater will be top on our list!

Simply the Best

We go all over the country whitewater rafting and JHWW wasour favorite hands down! From the moment we walked into the door we felt welcome!! Every person that we came in to contact that is employeed through JHWW was friendly and knowable! My advise to everyone that wants to go rafting in Jackson, you should just go with the best and That is with no aruguments (at least for my family) Jackson Hole Whitewater!!!

I highly recommend Jackson Hole Whitewater. Dave is excellent to work with and so accommodating. We’ve gone with our entire family from 6 to 76 and had a blast. The scenery is beautiful, the guides are great, and the water is chilly!

JHWW, Just writing to thank you guys for a great float trip early last week. My  family & I went out on the dinner float last Monday (I think) and had a  great time. We were on the raft that saw 4 moose, 5+ eagles, and a bunch of  other animals. Our guide, Ryan (or maybe Brian? Not 100% sure – sorry) was  really great and very knowledgeable. Made the trip that much better. I posted a  5 star review for you guys on  Trip Advisor , and wanted to shoot you some photos  you can put on your website if you want – our guide asked me to send some of  the moose when I got back. I’ve attached a few pictures for you guys. Thanks again, and keep up the great work.

What to wear, whitewater:.

  • Bathing suit or quick drying shorts and a t-shirt
  • Water shoes or sneakers – NO flip flops or crocs
  • Splash jackets included – wetsuits and booties available for rent

WHAT TO BRING?

Bring whatever you’d like (change of clothes, snacks & water, towels, etc.) and USE YOUR BUS SEAT AS A LOCKER! Your bus driver will stay with the bus the whole time you’re on the river.

Whatever you’re comfortable in! Wear layers in the morning as it tends to be chilly.

Bring your camera on this part of the river! We usually see lots of wildlife like bald eagles and hopefully some big game.

Dress in layers, it’s usually pretty nice on the river, but it is the mountains and we can have an occasional storm pop up.

This trip was so much fun for our whole family! Molly was our guide - I felt she had a great handle on the boat and was very friendly! The trip length was long (in a good way!) and the amount of whitewater was plentiful. Our 11 year old LOVED it, as did us parents. Overall, a really great trip and guides. We will absolutely book a trip with them again soon!

Choose Mad River! There are a lot of outfitters to choose from to raft down Snake River. Choose Mad River because they are so organized, their guides are funny and skilled, the home base has easy parking, and you'll feel taken care of. Our kids loved it, partly because the guides were awesome. As soon as it was over, we wished we could do it all over again!

Our Mad River whitewater rafting trip exceeded all my expectations! We had Molly as our guide and she was terrific. She handled the raft with skill without missing a beat while answering questions and pointing out interesting sights- including seven bald eagles! Very relaxing float with amazing views. Highly recommend and would do this again. Mad River rocks!

Our rafting trip was so much fun! We loved soaking in the local scenery and wildlife. We saw several bald eagles and osprey and our guide did a great job of pointing them out. Our guide was amazing! Super engaging and did a great job bringing a group of mostly strangers together with a lot of laughs. Would definitely recommend to couples and families!

Questions just ask..

None! Roughly half of our customers that we take down the river have never been whitewater rafting. All of our guides know this and go over a very detailed safety speech in which they will personally go around and show you how to sit and the best ways to keep yourself in the boat. To help ease some nerves, there are two great benefits to this river for first-timers. The first half of the trip is fairly mellow. You’ll get wet, but it is not too daunting. This allows you the time to get used to being in the boat. You are not going to be thrown into the boat and hit the biggest wave of the trip in the first five minutes. The second half of the trip is where all the bigger waves are. The other nice thing about the Snake River is that it is classified as a “Pool and drop river”, which basically means that after every section of waves, you are going to have a nice calm section afterwards before you hit your next set of waves. So you have time to sit back and relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the canyon between waves. The people who were nervous usually have the best time!

For whitewater our age limit for kids is usually 6 years old, there are some times of the year we could talk about adventurous 5 year olds. Just give us a call! For our scenic trips the youngest we will take is 4 years old.

There are certain water levels during the run-off season where we may raise our age limit. Please give us a call to discuss if you have more questions.

Our river trips leave as scheduled rain or shine. Don’t worry we are prepared! Find our rafting in rain the resources here. For whitewater we have wetsuits and booties available to rent that will make the trip enjoyable!  For the scenic, if a storm happens to come in we have ponchos on all the boats. However, we reserve the right to cancel or shorten a trip due to extreme weather conditions that would cause the trip to be unsafe. Whitewater rafting is a wet activity by nature, and assuming that you are dressed appropriately, we think this is the best outdoor activity for a rainy day! I f that is something you are not comfortable with, it is the responsibility of the party to cancel outside of our respective cancellation polices to receive a full refund.

6 Best Rafting Trips Near Yellowstone and Grand Teton

Whether you want to ride the rapids or enjoy a leisurely float, the rivers near yellowstone national park deliver..

Nothing beats a whitewater rafting adventure for escaping the summer heat. Although there is no rafting inside Yellowstone, the waterways surrounding the park offer up everything from lazy floats to intense rapids—pleasing everyone from kids and grandparents to adrenaline junkies. Find your perfect whitewater (or flat water, as the case may be) adventure on these favorite rivers.

1. Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

This large, long waterway rises in Yellowstone and travels more than 1,000 miles through Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Washington to become the Columbia River’s largest tributary. The most popular rafting section of the river runs from Grand Teton National Park through Jackson Hole, the area surrounding Jackson, Wyoming.

“Rafting and floating the river is my favorite way to see the park,” says Evan Toal, a guide for more than eight years and the head boatman at Jackson Hole Whitewater. “It’s the best way to take in the beauty of the area in a peaceful setting that is unobstructed by roads, buildings or any other human-made structures.”

Whitewater Rafting Trips on the Snake River

The Snake River offers both whitewater and mellow scenic float trips. “Whitewater” means more rapids and more adrenaline as you navigate through the Snake’s rushing waters. There are a number of companies that offer whitewater rafting trips on the Snake River.

Rafting down the Snake River with Mad River Boat Trips

Whitewater trips with Mad River Boat Trips are divided into three categories of rafts: classic adventure, small and super small. The smaller the boat, the bigger the adventure. Each trip covers eight river miles near Alpine, Wyoming. The classic adventure is best for those that want a taste of whitewater rafting without any white knuckling. The raft holds 10-12 people and has several non-paddling positions if you’re not sure you’re up to wielding a paddle. www.mad-river.com

Scenic Float Trips on the Snake River

If you’re looking for a more relaxing way to take in the majestic scenery of Grand Teton National Park and the surrounding area, then a scenic float trip is in order. Enjoy a secluded trip down Snake River within Grand Teton National Park and experience the park in a unique way. Bring a camera or binoculars because it’s possible to see a variety of wildlife, such as bald eagles, moose, elk and otters.

For most companies the minimum age limit is 6, but depending on the difficulty and intensity of the river at the time, the age limit could increase.

2. Yellowstone River near Gardiner, Montana

The mighty Yellowstone River winds for almost 700 miles through some of the park’s most stunning scenery: Yellowstone Lake, the Upper and Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Black Canyon of the Yellowstone, a 2,000-foot-deep canyon on the north side of Blacktail Deer Plateau.

From the park, it flows east through Montana and North Dakota, eventually joining the Missouri River. It offers a ton of fun in terms of rafting trips along the way.

Yellowstone Rafting with Flying Pig Adventure Company

At Yellowstone National Park’s North Entrance sits the town of Gardiner, Montana where you can literally load into rafting boats from town into the Yellowstone River. The river is a great one for families. Plus, the river flows along one of the borders of the park, making it a unique way to see a different side of the landscape.

“You can’t raft on the rivers in the park, so it’s the closest you’ll get to rafting in the park,” says Thomas Davis, co-owner of Wild West Whitewater Rafting. “It’s a great stretch of river whether you are looking for splashes or something more. It’s not overwhelming, so it’s pretty much good for all age levels.”

Flying Pig Adventure Company , based in Gardiner, Montana, runs several trips here. All of Flying Pig’s raft trips launch from behind the Flying Pig Camp Store right in Gardiner. Choose from an 8-mile trip (Class I, II, and III rapids), an exhilarating, more technical 18-mile ride through Yankee Jim Canyon (Class III-IV), or a totally immersive overnight trip. Flying Pig also offers lodging, horseback rides, guided fly-fishing, a camp store, park tours and more. flyingpigrafting.com

Rafting with Montana Whitewater

Montana Whitewater Rafting and Zipline Company offers half-and full-day trips on the Yellowstone (Class II-III). Their Yellowstone EcoTour Zipline, based in Gardiner, offers zips on the mountains bordering Yellowstone, sky bridges, and multiple 1,200-foot ziplines soaring 200 feet above Cinnabar Creek.  yellowstoneraftzipline.com

Paradise Adventure Company launches from two locations, Gardiner and Pray, Montana, to run 6, 8 and 18-mile trips on the Yellowstone River. www.paradiserafting.com

Also in Gardiner, Montana, Wild West Rafting runs float trips through the Yellowstone’s majestic Paradise Valley, which is a gorgeous landscape just south of Livingston that stretches just north of Yellowstone. Framed by the Absaroka range and the Gallatin range, it’s great for wildlife watching and photography, as well as high-quality whitewater and scenic river trips. Trips are suitable for the entire family, from beginners to more seasoned thrill-seekers. wildwestrafting.com

3. Gallatin River near Big Sky, Montana

From its source in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park, the Gallatin River courses north for 100 miles to join the Madison and Jefferson rivers in the quaint, small town of Three Forks, Montana. Its upper 40 miles dish out the most thrilling whitewater, with miles of rapids, rocks and waves.

The Gallatin River is also home to the Fly-Fishing Adventure Center , located at Karst Camp, a private riverfront property, on the banks of the river. Options include the Learn to Fly-Fish Program for beginners and families and guided trips on the Gallatin, Yellowstone, and Madison Rivers. yellowstonefish.com

Rafting the Gallatin River with Montana Whitewater

Montana Whitewater Rafting and Zipline Company (locations in Gardiner and Big Sky) runs trips down the Gallatin River, from a Class I-II scenic float in the Gallatin River Canyon to full-day runs into Class IV whitewater. Half-day, full-day, and overnight trips are available. The Gallatin and Gardiner locations also offers zipline tours.  montanawhitewater.com

4. Madison River West of West Yellowstone, Montana

Most famous for its excellent fly-fishing, the Madison River also offers great miles for rafting and tubing. From its origins on the west side of Yellowstone National Park, the river flows northwest through Bear Trap Canyon and more remote terrain to finally join the Missouri River near Three Forks, Montana.

If you don’t opt for a tubing float down the Madison River near Bozeman, you’re going to be really envious of all the tubers you see having an amazing time floating down the Madison River as you drive Hwy. 287 from Big Sky toward Ennis and Virginia City. It’s really worth setting aside a day to float the Madison River under Montana’s big sky.

Floating down the Madison River in inner tubes

Montana Whitewater Rafting and Zipline Company offers a shuttle and rental tubes, including coolers, for trips on the Madison River. This is a great option for families with children or anyone looking for a mellow day out on the river. The company also offers a much more intense rafting trip: full-day wilderness rafting through the Bear Trap Canyon (Class II-IV).  montanawhitewater.com

5. Stillwater River near Red Lodge, Montana

Whitewater rafting near Red Lodge with Adventure Whitewater

Despite its name, the Stillwater River still offers some wild fun for those looking for adventure near Red Lodge, Montana. The gorgeous river is free flowing, which means no dams impede the mighty flow of snowmelt through the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains. Experience rapids like Beartooth Drop, Mad Max and Nemesis and spot wildlife from your raft. The flow can fluctuate greatly, so how wild the ride actually is depends on the time of year.

Adventure Whitewater runs family-friendly tours out of Absaroka,  40 minutes north of Red Lodge. Choose from a half day trip, or a paddle n’ saddle package where you can do a half day of whitewater rafting and a half-day of horseback riding. Adventure Whitewater moves operations to the Yellowstone River in late summer after the Stillwater’s season has finished. adventurewhitewater.com

6. Shoshone River between Yellowstone and Cody, Wyoming

Teddy Roosevelt declared this stretch of country from Yellowstone National Park’s East Entrance to Cody, Wyoming, as the most scenic 50 miles in America. But don’t take his word for it. Go see it yourself as you drive out of Yellowstone’s East Entrance toward Cody.

While rafting through this gorgeous area, you’ll see the spectacular scenery of the Wapiti Valley on the North Fork of the Shoshone while bouncing over Class II rapids.  Two-hour to half-day trips are available. Don’t forget to look beyond the river for wildlife. The riverbanks are full of wildlife including eagles, elk and deer.

Do you have a young family? Take a float on the milder sections of the river. Outfitters can be found in Cody, Wyoming . Visit the official Cody Yellowstone site to learn more.

THINGS TO DO IN GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK - WYOMING

F irst-time visitors oftentimes find themselves overwhelmed by all the things to do in Grand Teton National Park. I still find plenty of things to do even after coming here for over 20 years!

It's a park that has something for almost any park visitor. The Tetons offer incredible hiking trails, climbing, water activities, Wildlife viewing, auto touring, horseback riding, float trips, and much more!

Things to do in Grand Teton National Park

Stop at the scenic overlooks.

I still remember my first trip to the Tetons. My jaw dropped when I got to Jackson Lake and saw the mountains! It seemed like each corner was prettier than the previous one. I stopped at several of the overlooks including Oxbow Bend Turnout , Snake River Overlook , Teton Point Turnout, and Glacier View Turnout.

I was completely enamored! What completely blew my mind is that the valley floor throughout the Tetons is approximately 6500' in elevation. This is a high-elevation country, then you have this mountain range that just shoots straight out of the ground reaching as high as 13,770' in elevation.

The views here are second to none and the reason alone to come to see this incredible park. I keep coming back still in awe.

Visit the Mormon Row Historic District

Mormon Row is one of the most photographed locations in the park. The photo of the barn with the Tetons in the background is easily one of the most recognizable portraits of the American West.

It symbolizes the American dream of the westward movement and was one of the last places to be homesteaded due to its remoteness and ruggedness. This was not an area for the faint of heart and life was hard here. The winters are cold and water was not easy to find.

Wildlife Viewing

I personally feel that between Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, you will not find better wildlife viewing opportunities anywhere in the lower 48! Everyone asks me where to go to see wildlife in the Tetons and I tell them they just need to show up!

Wildlife commonly seen include black bears, grizzly bears, moose, elk, bison, pronghorn antelope, deer, coyotes, badgers, otters, and foxes. There are many more species, especially birds that make Grand Teton National Park home.

Don’t be surprised to see wildlife management vehicles near heavy wildlife areas. These park volunteers and employees are there to keep not only you safe but also the wildlife. They will ask you to move your car or to get off a trail if they feel like it is needed.

The area I get asked about the most for wildlife viewing is Moose-Wilson Road as it is well-known for moose. Yes, I have seen moose along this road, I have also seen moose along the Gros Ventre River and campground.

I think that I personally have a love-hate relationship with Moose Wilson Road. I say this because I love the wildlife here but hate that there is very little parking and the road shoulders have been either signed as no parking or there are rocks and logs preventing people from parking.

String Lake

String Lake is one of the most popular locations in all of Grand Teton National Park! The parking lot fills up early and you best get up early if you want to spend time here. There is plenty to keep you busy all day from going swimming, picnicking, canoeing/kayaking, and hiking.

Park Ranger John Pro Tip:

Get to the lake super early for a great experience of canoeing/kayaking. The wind is generally calm in the mornings as well as fewer people give the lake a mirror-like reflection on the water.

This also provides excellent photo opportunities. It is also more likely to see wildlife early in the morning.

42 Mile Scenic Loop Drive Grand Teton National Park

The 42 Mile Scenic Loop Drive in Grand Teton includes the Teton Park Road as well as Highway 26. It also covers many of the park's scenic overlooks and attractions like String Lake, the Cunningham Cabin , Mount Moran, Mormon Row , Taggart Lake, String Lake, Jenny Lake, Menor's Ferry Historic District including the Chapel of the Transfiguration.

There are two additional scenic drives that connect to the 42-mile scenic drive; Jenny Lake Scenic Drive and the Signal Mountain Summit Road Drive.

The only place, it doesn't take you to is Colter Bay Village which is north on the way to Yellowstone National Park . I have also seen lots of wildlife by simply driving along this loop road and enjoying the scenery.

Biking

Grand Teton National Park is incredibly bike-friendly with bike racks and many of the popular trailheads and destinations.

Those going to the park with bikes have the chance to use the Multi-Use Pathway, which opened to the public in 2009. This paved route runs alongside Teton Park Road to South Jenny Lake and provides some great views of the surrounding landscape.

The National Park Service put out a great brochure on biking at GTNP . It includes the gravel surface River Road and Two Ocean Lake Dirt Road.

This provides plenty of opportunities for bikers to enjoy the park scenery. There are also plenty of opportunities for hikers, with a number of walking routes winding their way around the park.

Visit one of four  of the Grand Teton National Park Visitor Centers

There are a number of visitor centers around the park providing details and information about activities, alerts, the landscape, and wildlife.

Colter Bay Visitor Center

Hours: 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Closed all major holidays except Independence Day and Labor Day.

The Colter Bay Visitor Center sits on Lake Jackson and previously served as the Colter Bay Museum.

Jenny Lake Visitor Center

The Jenny Lake Ranger Station provides useful information for those who plan to spend time in the park. They also offer activities such as guided walks and talks.

The ranger station at south Jenny Lake provides information and backcountry permitting for climbing and mountaineering in the park.

The Laurance S. Rockefeller Center offers activities such as guided walks and talks. It should be noted that some of the centers are seasonal and do not operate year-round.

Grand Teton Camping

For those who enjoy camping, there are plenty of developed campgrounds around the park. In total there are six to choose from and these typically have a number of individual and group sites on offer.

While some, such as the Jenny Lake Campground , offer only tent camping, others allow RV and trailer camping. The Colter Bay RV Park and Flagg Ranch Campground offer full hook-up sites for those who enjoy camping in a little more luxury.

Stay in a Lodge or Cabin

From the historic Colter Bay Cabins to the luxurious Jackson Lake Lodge and Signal Mountain Lodge you will love waking up in Grand Teton National Park. Each of the lodges is unique and offers a great experience.

Dine with a view at Jackson Lake Lodge

There are several dining options within the National Park Lodges but nothing compares to the Mural Room at the Jackson Lake Lodge.  It is here that you can have breakfast, lunch, or dinner with epic views of the Tetons.

Menors Ferry Historic District

Just down from the Moose visitor center is the historic Menors Ferry. A short trail takes you to Bill Menor's cabin and country store.

Here you can see what life was like for one of the original homesteaders in this area. He created the ferry on the Snake River proving to be an important river crossing for people.

There are also a few supplies to purchase even today in the Menor's country store.

Cunningham Cabin

The Cunningham Cabin is one of the few remaining structures left standing from the Homesteading movement that took place in the Jackson Valley in the late 1800s.

Today park visitors come here for the iconic photo of the Tetons looking through the cabin window. I know that it's one of those photos that everyone has but I still love it here. I love staring out that window and wonder what it would have been like living here over 100 years ago without any of today's amenities.

Those who have a valid fishing license for Wyoming have the chance to try and land a big one in the park. The waters and lakes around the park are generally open for fishing year-round, although there are a few exceptions to this. Full details of the fishing opportunities can be found in the Grand Teton Fishing Brochure .

Visitors looking to take advantage of the water in the park have unlimited opportunities. Motorboats can access the Jenny and Jackson Lakes (10 horsepower maximum), and non-motorized boats can be used on the many lakes and rivers in the park. A fun way to travel on the water involves floating the Snake River.

Remember the rules for Boating in the Grand Tetons and make sure to read the park's brochure on boating and floating before you go. Boaters are first required to get a permit before launching any vessel in the park and can get the permit at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center and the Colter Bay Visitor Center.

Also, remember that all boats entering Grand Teton National Park are required to stop for an AIS Inspection (Aquatic Invasive Species). By law boats coming from out of state must be inspected or have a valid proof of inspection before they launch on waters in the state, including waters in the park. Boaters must also purchase an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) decal from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake Boat Tours

Jenny Lake boating runs small passenger shuttles from South Jenny Lake Boat Dock to Mount Teewinot. This shuttle basically eliminates a 2-mile hike each way to reach the Cascade Canyon Trailhead. From here, you can hike to Hidden Falls (1 Mile round trip), Inspiration Point (2 miles round trip), and beyond to several other trails.

They also offer an hour-long scenic cruise allowing you to sit back and soak in the scenery. They also have knowledgeable guides ready to answer questions and show you some of the highlights to the area.

Jackson Lake

The Grand Teton Lodge Company has several boat tours on Jackson Lake, the biggest lake in Grand Teton National Park.  Tours are 1.5 hrs.-2.5 hrs. depending on if you have a cruise only or one with either breakfast, lunch, or dinner included. no matter which cruises you decide to take, the views of the Tetons are absolutely breathtaking!

White Water Rafting in the Grand Tetons

Are you a thrill-seeker? Love to get wet? The Snake River raft trip will give you both! With names of rapids like the Big Kahuna and Lunch Counter, you will have a great time.

You also get the benefit of taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Tetons. There are several outfitters to choose from and will definitely be a highlight of your Grand Teton vacation.

Places to see sunrise/sunset

Sunrise in Grand Teton National Park is an unforgettable experience. This is because the Teton mountain range sets directly east to several very photogenic locations. As the sun rises, the morning glow of the golden hour lights up the Tetons creating pure magic. There are several locations to get an epic sunrise photo so use your imagination as you look east. Some of my favorite sunrise locations include:

  • Along Jackson Lake
  • Schwabacher's Landing

One thing to remember about photographing sunsets in Grand Teton National Park is the sun sets in the west behind the Teton Mountain Range that go North-South as you face towards the east. This makes taking sunset photos very tricky as there is only a short window to take a great sunset photo.

This window occurs about an hour before sunset as the sun dips behind the Tetons, yet still, enough light to light the foreground of your image. With luck, you will have clouds above the Tetons adding color and texture to your photograph. For those of you who come prepared, can have an unforgettable photo of the sunset in the Tetons.

Some of my favorite sunset locations include:

  • Snake River Turnout
  • Summit of Signal Mountain: Drive up Signal Mountain Road to get a great view of the entire Jackson Valley.

There are well over 200 miles of hiking trails in the Grand Tetons. Needless to say, hiking is one of the park's most popular activities. There is a huge variety of trails from easy flat trails to epic hikes up to a glacier on the Teton Peaks.

One of the best tips we can give you for planning a hiking trip in Grand Teton is to arrive early to the trailhead. When I say early I mean hours before you think you need to get there. We have seen cars parked for almost a mile from trailheads. You do not want to end up having to take a longer hike from your car than the actual hike you are planning to take.

I always encourage everyone to carry the ten essentials with them and make sure that someone knows what hikes they are planning to take. The trails here are at high elevation, rocky and it is easy to twist an ankle or fall if you are not paying attention. The weather here can also change suddenly so I always encourage everyone to come prepared. You even have to plan on wildlife encounters here including the Grizzly Bear in the Tetons.

The best easy day hikes I would recommend to a first-time visitor would be:

  • String Lake Loop
  • Taggart Lake
  • Lunch Tree Hill
  • Hidden Falls
  • Inspiration Point
  • Lake Creek-Woodland Loop Trail

Grand Teton Brewing/ Snake River Brewing

I think everyone knows that I like to enjoy a good beer after exploring a new park, especially trying beers with names themed after the National Parks.

Snake River Brewing (Jackson, Wyoming) has a great Jenny Lake Lager and Grand Teton Brewing (Victor, Idaho) has a National Park Series including an Old Faithful Ale as well as an Old Faithful Root Beer for those under 21.

Make sure to check out my article, Beers inspired by the U.S. National Parks.

rafting trips grand tetons

I was hoping to get some feedback on my rough itinerary. We are a family of 4 adults that will be traveling this summer. This is what I have so far:

Day 1 - Landing in Bozeman at 10:30 am.

Stopping to pick up grocery order at Walmart have having lunch somewhere on our way to Old Faithful Inn .

Day 2 - Old Faithful Inn

Upper Geyser Basin

Lower Geyser Basin

Fountain Paint Pot

5:45 pm Flag Lowering Ceremony at Old Faithful Inn.

Stay at Old Faithful Inn

Day 3 - Travel day to Signal Mountain Lodge in Grand Teton

What can we do this travel day? I was thinking either the Mt Washburn hike via Dunravens Pass or Taggart & Bradley Lake hikes??

Day 4 - Signal Mountain Lodge

Cascade Canyon Trail - Hiden Falls & Inspiration Point

Day 5 - Signal Mountain Lodge

Quick hike in the AM before our 1:00pm Solitude Snake River Float? Taggart Lake?

Aerial Tram after float or ?

Dinner at Doran's or ?

Day 6 - Travel Day to Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel

Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Noth Rim - Brink of Lower Falls - Lookout Point - Red Rock Point

South Rim - Artist Point

Day 7 Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel

Mammoth Hot Springs

Norris Geyser

Lamar Valley

Day 8 - Flight out of Bozeman 11:30 am. We will plan to leave the hotel around 6:00 am.

I want to eliminate too much backtracking. I also want to make sure I'm not over scheduling our days. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You have a lot on day 2, so you can finish some of that as you want on Day 3 before heading to GTNP. Mt Washburn is out of your way for day 3. You can pick up West Thumb Geyser Basin on day 3 or 6. You could do Mt Washburn (depending on when your trip is for conditions) on day 6 or 7.

rafting trips grand tetons

You will probably do the Old Faithful geyser trail your first evening or day two morning when the day trippers are gone. You are a little heavy on the thermal areas so don't forget to leave time for other areas of the park like Hayden Valley, La Hardy Rapids, Tower Falls area etc. You will have a great time.

Nice catch on Grand Prismatic, Brian. However, if they hike to Fairy Falls, you want that earlier in the day than close to sunset for wildlife reasons. Maybe the first afternoon later do the hike and the overlook on the way back without the time constraint on the 2nd night? If hitting West Thumb on the way out and not on the return, that gives a bit more time for the east side, and then pick up more like Tower Fall on the 7th day?

Penny815, you can see there are various ways and you get to work out what fits your group best!

Somr thoughts…

Day 2 focus on old faithful area, geyser basin.

Day 3 am old faithful area, late am grant/ west thumb , then to grand Teton. Dinner at SML restaurant

Day 4 h Jenny lake snd hikes

Day 5 am take pictures of mountains at ox bow bend, schwahbacker landing ehrn sun is behind you. Pm float trip. Therr was under prior ownership float trips done from SML operated by one of the companies where they pick up and drop off at lodge. I woukd say do evrning in jackson. Make dinner reservations around 6 pm.

Day 6 am lake Yellowstone , youcould do canyon now but I’d just do canyon for lunch thrn do Lamar valley thrn to mammoth

Day 7 am canyon , pm norris, mammoth. Am in canyon is usually better time to go.

Day 8 if flight is at 1130 am, you want to get there by 930 am to fill car snd return it. It’s about 2 hrs from gardiner to Livingston to airport.

On day 2 or 3 you could do norris. On day 6 if you do Canyon , thrn on day 7 you coukd do am lamar valley with lunch in Cooke city thrn return to mammoth. If you do thst thrn you could move ladt night to red lodge for the night and drive besrtooth highway to red lodge. Airport is about 2.5 hrs drive from red lodge.

I don't know where Dan P is getting 3 hours from Bozeman to West Yellowstone.

It is 90 miles from Bozeman to West Yellowstone. I've driven that section many times. It takes a little under 2 hours to drive.

Sunset in mid-July will be around 9:05 pm with civil twilight (true darkness) at around 9:41 pm. There is no reason to stay in West Yellowstone. You will have plenty of time to get to your lodging at Old Faithful .

Day 1 - stays the same - possibly taking in Old Faithful loop trail if there is still daylight.

Day 2- Norris Geyser Basin, Lower Geyser Basin, Grand Prismatic - Fairy Falls Trail in the afternoon, flag lowering ceremony.

Day 3 - Old Faithful Loop trail/do what we didn't get to do on Day 2 this AM, perhaps Taggart Lake hike before checking into Signal Mountain Lodge .

Day 4 - Cascade Canyon Trail/Jenny Lake

Day 5 - Oxbend Bend and Schwabacher Landing for pictures before 1:00 float trip. Dinner in Jackson.

Day 6 - Lake Yellowstone , Canyon for lunch, Tower Fall and Lamar Valley to Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel to check in - perhaps Mammoth Hot Springs before the end of the day.

Day 7 - Mt Washburn hike, Grand Canyon, North & South Rim if there is time.

Day 8 - stays the same.

The more I look at the itinerary, the more I realize that we just can't do it all. LOL I can't thank everyone enough for taking the time to help me plan this trip!
