2024 Wells Fargo Championship predictions, expert picks, odds, field rankings, golf best bets at Quail Hollow
A former pga championship venue represents the final chance for players to get right before the year's second major.
The 2024 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club is the final stop on the PGA Tour calendar before players shift focus to the PGA Championship. Boasting signature status for the second straight year, the Wells Fargo Championship will welcome 69 of the top players the PGA Tour has to offer, all of whom should be around for the weekend with no cut at the 36-hole mark.
Headlining the field is the man who has seemingly done no wrong at Quail Hollow throughout his career: Rory McIlroy. The world No. 2 arrives fresh off his 25th PGA Tour victory alongside Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic. With the Masters now behind him, McIlroy hopes to continue running downhill and should have a great chance to do so given his history at this venue.
Three times a winner at Quail Hollow, including his first ever back in 2010, McIlroy must love his chances. Another player to love his chances this week is the defending champion Wyndham Clark. This time last year, Clark was without a PGA Tour victory and hardly a household name. Oh, how the times have changed.
The reigning U.S. Open champion is now among the best in the world and has consistently factored in these signature events with a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and close calls at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship and RBC Heritage. While Clark fell short to world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in all three of those instances, he and the rest of the field need not worry about the top man in the sport as he remains on the sideline awaiting the birth of his first child.
Scheffler's absence could give way for a number of players experiencing a drought of their own with names like Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young among them. This crop of top talent hasn't entered the winner's circle in a couple of years and hope to change that this week.
Masters contenders like Collin Morikawa and Max Homa should find themselves in the picture this weekend as well, while others like Viktor Hovland and Will Zalatoris search for a little bit of form.
2024 Wells Fargo Championship schedule
Dates: May 9-12 | Location: Quail Hollow Club — Charlotte, North Carolina Par: 71 | Yardage: 7,558 | Purse: $20,000,000
2024 Wells Fargo Championship field, odds
- Rory McIlroy (7-1): I wouldn't say he is in top form, but he is getting closer. In what has been described by some as a sluggish start to his 2024, McIlroy has picked up two worldwide wins, two other podium finishes and five other top 25s in 11 starts. His driver continues to set up his iron play which has flashed brilliance at times. His scoring clubs and short game need to get a smidge more consistent to feel really good about his chances next week at the PGA Championship, but that could happen this week at Quail Hollow where he has three wins.
- Xander Schauffele (10-1)
- Wyndham Clark (16-1): The term "big-game hunter" gets tossed around a ton, but it is beginning to describe Clark. The 30-year-old has made his hay at signature events this year with a win at Pebble Beach and podium finishes at Bay Hill, TPC Sawgrass and, most recently, Harbour Town. In his six other events, Clark has not registered a top-20 finish. He's the defending champion and must be considered on this stage.
- Patrick Cantlay (18-1)
- Collin Morikawa (22-1)
- Max Homa (22-1): Homa is twice a winner of this tournament but only once at Quail Hollow; he picked up his first career victory here in 2019 and won on a rain-soaked TPC Potomac in 2022. Homa has since added a T8 to his résumé last year and arrives with a world of confidence following his podium finish at the Masters -- his best major championship result. He's got the entirety of his game cooperating, has found success at this golf course and similar difficult venues and is among the best closers in the game.
- Justin Thomas (25-1): A fast finish in Hilton Head saw Thomas grab his first top five since The American Express in January. Since then, the two-time PGA Championship winner has flashed some high-quality golf, some low-quality golf and a little in between. He has been inconsistent as his iron play has stalled slightly and the putting continues to pose a problem. He's fared well at Quail Hollow in his career (namely his 2017 PGA Championship victory).
- Tommy Fleetwood (28-1)
- Viktor Hovland (28-1): We haven't seen the reigning FedEx Cup champion since an ugly missed cut at the Masters. Quail Hollow should be a perfect golf course for Hovland given his driving acumen, but there are a ton of question marks swirling around his game at the minute. His ball-striking numbers have taken a dip in 2024 and his around-the-green presence -- which was so improved in 2023 -- has reverted to the norm ranking last on the PGA Tour this season.
- Hideki Matsuyama (30-1)

New father, new head pro becomes rare Rockford golfer to reach PGA Tour Major championship
Jeff Kellen dreamed of making the PGA Tour when he finished third in the Men’s City as a junior at Rockford Lutheran, one of the best finishes ever by a high school player. He dreamed of being a pro golfer when he was a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference pick at Illinois State, finishing one stroke out of first place as a senior.
But he never made it. He didn’t even make it to the top minor league tour. Not even after he became one of the few pro golfers in history to birdie every hole on the back nine , shooting a 27 in the second round of the Summergrove Classic near Atlanta on the Hopkins Tour a decade ago.
Now, though, all his other dreams were coming true. He and his wife of eight years had their first child in November. He also got his first job as a head PGA pro, at North Shore Country Club in Glenview that same month. His life had never been better.
More: From golf stars to teaching stars
“It’s been a year full of blessings,” Kellen said.
And, now, the same is true of his golf life. Kellen joined Guilford grad Brad Benjamin (2010 Masters, 2011 U.S. Open) and Byron grad Chris French (2023 PGA Championship) as the only Rockford golfers to qualify for one of golf’s four Major tournaments in the last 45 years.
“It’s the realization of a dream,” Kellen said. “I always wanted to play on the PGA Tour and have a chance to play in events like this.”
Kellen gave up on being a pro golfer in 2017 to become a golf teacher instead when Ed Slattery hired him to be his top assistant at Mauh-Nah-Tee-See. In 2020, he moved on to Butler National, one of Illinois’ most exclusive clubs, as its top assistant pro.
“We were just lucky to have him for three years,” Slattery said. “This is wonderful. I am really happy for him. I can’t wait to see how he does.”
Kellen’s career as a teaching pro rose quickly.
“I love it,” he said. “The childhood dream of playing golf was born out of my love for the game. To be able to transition that into the business of golf on the club side is wonderful. It’s not the same thing day after day after day. Every day presents its own opportunities and challenges. I get to share my passion for the game. That makes it a lot of fun.”
More: How Rockford's Chris French make it to PGA after quitting golf in his 20s
It doesn’t allow him to play that much golf, though. On the other hand, the PGA has its own series of tournaments for its teaching pros. Kellen has played in 10 or 12 of those every year, never earning more than $5,545 in any one of them. But the big carrot is the PGA sends the top 20 players from its tournament for PGA professionals all around the country to the PGA Championship. That’s how French, the head pro at Aldeen, made it last year. And that’s how Kellen got in this year, tying for eighth there to qualify for the PGA Championship, which runs May 16-19 at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.
“I was well aware that I was capable of qualifying,” Kellen said. “Seeing Chris do it was super exciting. He and I are friends. I know where my game stacked up against his. It made it more real and showed me it was something that should be a goal, something that should be achievable.”
Kellen began closing on his dream hard when he shot a 68, tied for the low round of the day, in the second round in Frisco, Texas. That put him tied for fifth , four strokes off the lead. But he skied to an 80 in a windy round 3, dropping to 29th.
That is when his dream life helped him keep his golf dreams alive. Rather than get down, Kellen was returned to his rental house and was uplifted by his son, Remi, and his wife, Sierra, who played soccer on Lutheran’s 2006 state championship team.
“Years past, I would have been dejected and down,” Kellen said. “Those other life things made it easier to keep in perspective. I just figured I’d play tomorrow and see what happens.”
What happened was Kellen was on the exact cut number with four holes to play. They had leaderboards on each of the last six holes, so Kellen — and his dad, who caddied for him — knew exactly where he stood. He birdied 15 to get three shots clear of the line. A bogey on 16 dropped it back to two. He needed to make a six-foot par putt on 17 to retain that two-shot edge.
“That putt on 17 for par was the one moment that if i made that putt I knew I was probably good,” Kellen said. “It was a slightly uphill right edge putt. The wind was blowing 35 miles per hour left to right. I aimed it right inside the edge and hit it firm. I wasn’t going to let the wind blow it out of the hole. I hit it dead center.
“That was my theme for that whole round. I hadn’t practiced much, so I made the decision that come hell or high water on that round, I was going to make a good aggressive swing all day and let the chips fall where they may. The worst thing you can do in this game is take guided swings. You should let it rip and see what happens.
“I tell my juniors when they get nervous to swing hard. When you try to baby things or be delicate, it’s far more difficult than swinging as hard as you can.”
Jeff Kellen’s life has become more complicated these last few months. The biggest golf tournament of his life looms ahead. His everyday life has more responsibilities, too. As a father. And keeping golfers happy at a top country club.
“Life is way busier. More obligations. More things to keep your hands on. Managing a team. All that stuff,” Kellen said. “But it’s been wonderful. We’ve got a great team here. North Shore Country Club is a wonderful place to be.
“It’s been a year of a lot of great things. We feel very lucky.”
Myrtle Beach native, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ co-host Vanna White brings excitement to golf

Change Text Size
After a hefty spin, the wheel of golf has finally landed on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The city is set to host the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club this week as an Additional Event alongside the Wells Fargo Championship.
Among those playing in the 52-team pro-am on Wednesday is Vanna White, celebrated co-host of the show “Wheel of Fortune.” Born and raised in North Myrtle Beach, White is most famous for uncovering letters that could lead to make-or-break for contestants for the past 41 years — but she also possesses a lesser-known connection to golf.
“I started playing golf when I was young, and it only lasted for a couple of years – of course, other things got in the way,” she said ahead of the pro-am.
White picked the game back up back five years ago and is now quite the golf enthusiast, participating in her fair share of celebrity tournaments.
“It’s beautiful on the course, it’s nature, and you’re really competing against yourself and I just have fun when I go out there,” she said. “I don’t take it too seriously. It’s a great escape and a good way to clear your mind.”
Vanna White will be playing in the Myrtle Beach Classic pro-am on Wednesday. (Courtesy Vanna White/Facebook)
Golf has also taught White lessons applicable to her life and career: “If I’ve learned anything over the past few years from golf, it’s been to never give up. Never give up! There’s always a better score.”
Now, White is proud to be one of the ambassadors of her hometown event. For a city lauded as the “golfing capital of the world,” the Myrtle Beach Classic has been decades in the making. The Grand Strand has played host to Senior and Ladies PGA Championships and a multitude of amateur, junior and collegiate events, but this is the first time a PGA TOUR event will be played here.
White initially didn’t want to play in the pro-am, but caved pretty quickly.
“I’m so excited, I’m a little kid in a candy store. … The course is so beautiful. … it’s breathtaking, everything about it,” she said while beaming.
She did play the Dunes Club a couple months ago – but refrained from mentioning her score (“It was hard,” she admitted.) and will be teeing it up here again alongside her brother Chip on Wednesday.
Despite her illustrious and continuing life and future in Hollywood, as White just signed on for two more years of the show along with new co-host Ryan Seacrest, she tries to visit her roots a few times a year.
"When I was born ... no one could pronounce my name correctly – Vana? Vanya? – I can come home now and people know me as Vanna,” she reflected. “I don't consider myself a celebrity even when I'm on TV, and especially when I come home. I'm still that Vanna that I grew up as, and I'll always be that same person.”
Part of White’s golf journey has been to break 100, which she accomplished in 2021. Is it time to break 90?
“I'm so close,” she admitted. “I'm shooting in the mid-90s right now – that's not bragging by any means – but it's those few putts that you miss. I'm working on it. Maybe tomorrow."
Stephanie Royer is on staff at the PGA TOUR. She played on her college golf team and is currently on a meaningful journey to travel to every destination in the "National Treasure" movies.

Five Things to Know About the Cognizant Founders Cup
Brittany altomare announces birth of son.
- lpga-founders-cup
- Tournament News
The state of New Jersey hosts three of the next four stops on the LPGA Tour, beginning with this week’s Cognizant Founders Cup. The 13th edition of the tournament, which honors the 13 founding members of the LPGA Tour, will be played for the third time at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J., and offers one of the biggest purses of the regular season with $3 million in prize money. Here are five things you need to know about this week’s Cognizant Founders Cup.
Nelly Korda Chasing History
Nelly Korda will be chasing a historic sixth consecutive victory when she tees it up at the Cognizant Founders Cup. Korda captured her record-tying fifth straight win at The Chevron Championship and opted to skip the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro in order to give herself a two-week break before competing again. When Korda tees it up in the Garden State, she’ll be looking to achieve what has never been done before on the LPGA Tour: winning in six straight starts. Korda missed the cut last season in her first appearance at Upper Montclair Country Club.
Jin Young Ko Goes for Win No. 4
Defending champion Jin Young Ko returns to New Jersey not only seeking a successful title defense but also her first win of the season. Ko, who has enjoyed an epic run of success at the Cognizant Founders Cup, will be looking to collect her third tournament victory in five years, as the tournament wasn’t contested in 2020. Last season, Ko came from four strokes back on the final day to force a playoff with Minjee Lee, the 2022 champion, and ultimately defeated Lee on the first extra hole. Ko has played a limited number of events this season on the LPGA Tour as she’s dealt with injuries but has found some form coming into the week as she picked up her second top 10 of the season and best finish of the year so far with her tie for fourth at the JM Eagle LA Championship.
More than two dozen major champions are poised to tee it up in New Jersey in honor of the Tour’s 13 Founders. Major champions Celine Boutier, Ruoning Yin, Brooke Henderson, Hannah Green, Anna Nordqvist and Patty Tavatanakit are among those slated to compete.
Atthaya Thitikul, who made her first start of the season at The Chevron Championship after rehabbing a thumb injury, will tee it up for just the second time this year in the Garden State. Thitikul took the lead in her return to competition at The Chevron Championship but then faded on the final day with a closing round of 76. She’s played well in the Cognizant Founders Cup since it made the move to Upper Montclair Country Club, where she carded a final-round 63 in 2022 to finish in a tie for eighth and tied for fifth in 2023.
Two of the hottest players in recent weeks, Maja Stark and Hae Ran Ryu, are also in the field and will be looking to keep their good form rolling. Stark has finished inside the top three in three of her last four starts, including runner-up finishes at both The Chevron Championship and the JM Eagle LA Championship. Ryu, who earned Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year honors in 2023, has recorded three top 10s in her last three starts and picked up a season-best third-place finish at the JM Eagle LA Championship. She’ll be one to watch in New Jersey, where she finished fourth last season.
Lexi Thompson returns to action at the Cognizant Founders Cup after a right-hand injury hampered her success at The Chevron Championship. Thompson recently took to Instagram, where she posted a photo of herself wearing a brace on her right wrist and hand following her missed cut at the major championship.
Lydia Ko Continues HOF Chase
The quest to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame continues for Lydia Ko at the Cognizant Founders Cup. Each victory on the LPGA Tour earns players a point towards qualifying for the Hall, and when Ko won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions at the start of the season, she put herself within one point of automatic qualification. Ko needs 27 points to earn her way into the Hall, and with a victory at the Cognizant Founders Cup, she would earn her place in the LPGA Hall of Fame alongside the women whom this week’s tournament honors. Ko has enjoyed two weeks off since her tie for 17th finish at The Chevron Championship, where she was lurking heading into the weekend but couldn’t convert after carding a final-round 75. Ko has had mixed results at Upper Montclair Country Club, tying for 12th in 2022 and tying for 42nd last year.
LPGA Founders
In 2011, the Cognizant Founders Cup was created to honor the 13 founding members of the LPGA Tour. And since its inception, some of the biggest names to have played the women’s game have won the event, including the likes of World Golf Hall of Fame member Karrie Webb and LPGA Hall of Fame member Inbee Park, as well as major champions Stacy Lewis, Anna Nordqvist, Sei Young Kim and Yani Tseng.

Taylor Pendrith finally won his first PGA Tour event Sunday at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson after 74 professional starts.
As he came down the stretch, his former Kent State teammate and fellow Canadian, Mackenzie Hughes, carried around three beers , ensuring he did not miss the winning moment.
The PGA Tour social team followed him as he dipped under the ropes on the 18th green, waiting for his friend to finish.
Hughes asked CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis, “How close is Taylor?”
“It’s a tap-in,” she responded.

Pendrith’s wife approached Hughes, and he said, “I should have brought you one,” as they hugged in celebration.
The Canadian finally acknowledged the camera and said, “He’s going to get a little wet.”
Hughes snuck around trying to surprise Pendrith after he sank the winning putt. As Pendrith celebrated with his wife and son, Hughes snuck up behind him and gave him a Miller Lite shower down his back.
After he doused Pendrith, the camera cuts to his caddie, Hughes, and his wife raising their glasses to his win.
It was a big moment for Pendrith as he became the latest Canadian to win on the PGA Tour. The 32-year-old has not had the strongest year. Pendrith has also fought a shoulder injury , but the last two weeks saw his game trend in the right direction.
He and Hughes partnered at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week and tied for 11th. The week before that, he finished T11 at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
Now, Pendrith will play in his first Signature Event of the year, the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hallow.

Why webb simpson's board seat could play a key role in pga tour-pif deal and the future of professional golf, share this article.
McKINNEY, Texas – Ever since Webb Simpson offered to resign his seat on the board if Rory McIlroy took his spot, it has been a hot topic of conversation in the PGA Tour locker room and beyond.
Simpson, one of the six player directors on the Tour Policy Board, submitted a letter stating he’d like to resign with the caveat that McIlroy serve the remainder of his time on the Board. It’s a strange twist given that McIlroy resigned from the board abruptly in November, and was replaced by Jordan Spieth through a Board vote. (Simpson responded via text to an interview request saying, “I’ve been hunkered down and focused on my family and golf the last couple of weeks and it’s been very nice.” He didn’t participate in this story.)
Adam Scott, who joined the Board this year, said there wasn’t anything scheduled “at the moment as far as I know,” but noted, “it could be a good thing.”
“Rory is an important part of this Tour. His voice matters. We have to come together and make a decision as a Board how this is going to go forward,” Scott said.
He added the process is complicated because of Simpson’s highly unusual request.
“Usually, a player doesn’t have a contingency to their resignation and names a successor,” Scott said. “Some of the delay is just figuring out what is sensible. It’s a shame that it is out in the public. We don’t need all the ins and outs and being spread out detail-wise. We have a responsibility to shareholders now. The process matters more than ever. I think the process matters in general.”
If McIlroy were to rejoin the board that would mean that three of the largest stakeholders in the Tour’s new for-profit business entity – Woods, McIlroy and Spieth – would also be voting on Board matters.
“I think I could be helpful to the process,” McIlroy said at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans when the story originally broke. “But only if people want me involved, I guess. When Webb and I talked and he talked about potentially coming off the board, I said, ‘Look, if it was something that other people wanted, I would gladly take that seat,’ and that was the conversation that we had.
“But yeah, I think that’s the whole reason. I feel like I can be helpful. I feel like I care a lot, and I have some pretty good experience and good connections within the game and sort of around the wider sort of ecosystem and everything that’s going on. But at the end of the day, it’s not quite up to me to just come back on the board. There’s a process that has to be followed. But I’m willing to do it if that’s what people want, I guess.”

While McIlroy gained respect among players for serving as an unofficial Tour spokesman for the better part of two years in the Tour’s civil war with LIV Golf, his decision to exit the Board during such a pivotal time in shaping the Tour’s future didn’t sit well with everyone.
“He was very clear that it was too much for him. He had business dealings, he has a kid, he wants to focus on his game. Trust me, I get it. But once you quit, you’re not getting back,” said Kevin Streelman, a former member of the policy board who ran against McIlroy for Player Advisory Council chairman. “I wouldn’t quit on something that you were elected to by your peers. To want back in is peculiar.”
James Hahn, another former player director, questioned how Simpson could handpick his successor.
“That’s just not how democracy works. It goes against all the principles of what make a Tour-run organization,” he said.
Hahn wondered what would happen if U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris said she was stepping down as long as she could choose her successor. Then he put it back into terms that hit more closer to home. “Imagine if instead of Rory, Webb said he wanted Nate Lashley, who has been vocal against some of the Tour policy decisions, or named me to replace him. There would be an absolute uproar. People would be saying, ‘You can’t do that.’ ”
One veteran pro, who asked for anonymity because of his limited status – “I’m begging for starts,” he said – claimed that Simpson will remain on the board for the remainder of his term. The veteran pro said he asked board member Patrick Cantlay at the Zurich Classic about McIlroy’s potential return.
“I asked Cantlay, Is Rory back on the board? He said, No. But Patrick is really smart so I thought about how I phrased the question,” the veteran player recounted. “Maybe he was just answering based on this very moment. I said, Pat, I apologize, maybe I asked the wrong question. Did Webb step down? He said, Webb has not stepped down from the board. Then I went higher up and got the full story. Now, it does sound like things change daily out here, maybe hourly, so you never know.”
Cantlay and McIlroy had been at loggerheads during their time on the Board. In November, McIlroy told Paul Kimmage of The Independent , “My relationship with Cantlay is average at best. We don’t have a ton in common and see the world quite differently.” And that was the nicest thing McIlroy had to say about Cantlay, who also described him using a four-letter word for male genitalia.

The idea of Simpson stepping down and being replaced by McIlroy is appealing to many who want to see the Tour complete a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Speaking at the Zurich Classic, McIlroy said, “I think I can be helpful. I don’t think there’s been much progress made in the last eight months, and I was hopeful that there would be.”
One tournament director said McIlroy realized he made a big mistake in stepping down and is needed to help get a deal with PIF across the finish line.
“We need Rory back on the board. Had he stayed on he could’ve neutered Cantlay. He’s the only one with the power to neuter Cantlay. We need Rory to try to keep Cantlay from ruining the Tour,” a tournament director said. “Webb is too nice. A lot of people at the Tour at a very high level are thrilled that Rory is going back on the board for that reason.”
The tournament director compared McIlroy’s return to picking its poison.
“Rory wants the Irish Open and other international events to be promoted and smaller fields and larger purses. There’s a lot we don’t like about Rory and his deal. But the main thing is Cantlay and we’ve got to get a deal done with the PIF. LIV’s got to go away. If we don’t get a deal done, we’re all screwed in the end. We all know it. (Cantlay) is against it. Rory is for it. So let’s get a deal done and get these (guys) put to bed. Do any of us want to work with the Saudis, no? But, on the other hand, none of us want to fight against them and their money for the rest of our careers, either. Cantlay is blocking any type of deal they try to put together. Rory wants (independent director) Jimmy Dunne to be the negotiator, not the players. The players should only be voting on what happens inside the ropes and rules and stuff. They are not businessmen. If you have a high school education how the hell can you vote on multi-billion-dollar finance situations and investment properties? They don’t have a clue. They don’t know the business. Hire the top business guys in the world to do your deal. Put them in place and be done with it.”
Simpson is expected to meet with the media on Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he is playing on a sponsor’s invite, and he undoubtedly will be asked about his future on the Tour’s policy board. How he chooses to address those questions may offer some clarity into why he’d like to resign and insight into how this process may play out.
