NDDOT issues no travel advisory for western, central northeastern North Dakota

no travel advisory north dakota

No travel advisory issued for western, central, and northeastern North Dakota due to snow, blowing snow, and ice under the snow creating hazardous driving conditions.

Cities included in the No Travel Advisory are: Williston, Dickinson, Minot, Bismarck, Devils Lake, Jamestown, Valley City, Grand Forks and surrounding areas. Motorists in these areas should not travel as blowing and drifting snow is creating hazardous driving conditions.

A Travel Alert has been issued for the Fargo area due to icy roads and slush on roadways creating slippery driving conditions.

Cities included in the Travel Alert are Fargo, Mayville, Hillsboro, Casselton, Lisbon, Wahpeton, and surrounding areas. Conditions are such that motorists can still travel in these areas, but should be advised of rapidly changing conditions. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speeds and drive according to the conditions.

I-94 from the Montana Border to Jamestown as well as Highway 83 between Minot and Bismarck will close at 5:30 p.m. Central Time.

Travel Alert extended to the Devils Lake area.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation has issued a Travel Alert for many areas of the state because of icy roads caused by freezing rain.

Cities included in the alert are Dickinson, Bismarck, Minot, Jamestown, Valley City, Grand Forks, and surrounding areas.

NDDOT says motorists can still travel, but conditions can change rapidly.

No Travel Advisory issued for the northeast region of North Dakota

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) along with the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) have issued a No Travel Advisory in the northeast region of North Dakota due to heavy snow and high winds causing near-zero visibility, icy roads, and hazardous driving conditions.

The No Travel Advisory includes the cities of Grand Forks, Drayton, Grafton, Pembina, Cooperstown, and surrounding areas.

A No Travel Advisory means motorists should not travel due to hazardous conditions which may make it unsafe to travel. Motorists should take No Travel Advisories seriously.

As a reminder, a Travel Alert remains in place for Jamestown, Valley City, Ellendale, Towner, Devils Lake, Carrington, and surrounding areas.

There are three categories you should familiarize yourself with:

1. TRAVEL ALERT – Motorists can still travel but may encounter areas of challenging winter weather driving conditions on roadways. Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination and be alert to conditions that may make travel difficult, change rapidly, or cause travel delays. A TRAVEL ALERT has the potential to change to a NO TRAVEL ADVISED if conditions deteriorate.

2. NO TRAVEL ADVISED – Motorists should not travel due to hazardous conditions which may make it unsafe to travel. Snowplows may be pulled from the roads during severe conditions. Motorists should take NO TRAVEL ADVISED seriously as those motorists who choose to travel at their own risk may become stranded and emergency responders may not be able to reach them safely. A NO TRAVEL ADVISED has the potential to change to a ROAD CLOSED OR BLOCKED if conditions deteriorate.

3. ROAD CLOSED OR BLOCKED – Motorists are not allowed to travel on a closed road due to life threatening conditions. The road may be impassible or blocked. Motorists who drive past a road closure device may be fined up to $250.

(Update: 11:25 a.m) -- A portion of I-94 has reopened between Dickinson and the Montana Border.

Two Southwestern North Dakota counties, Bowman and Slope, briefly downgraded to a travel alert but have since reinstated No Travel Advisory alerts. Conditions are expected to improve into the evening, and more fully recover into Sunday night.

(Fargo, ND) -- A No Travel Advisory is being issued to all counties across the state.

This comes from officials within the North Dakota Department of Transportation, who as of this publication, have stated the entire state is under a no travel advisory. I-94 between Jamestown and the Montana border and several other roads, including US 52 East between Jamestown and Minot, are closed.

"NDDOT and the National Weather Service anticipate severe winter weather will create difficult travel conditions in much of North Dakota Friday night through Sunday morning. Snow and strong winds will cause impacts to travel. Winter Storm Alerts have been issued for much of the state. Please consider your travel plans. Motorists should be aware of rapidly changing conditions and are encouraged to reduce speeds and drive according to the conditions," said a statement from the North Dakota Department of Transportation, who added that motorists who drive past road closures could face fines up to $250.

In addition, over-dimensional vehicles have been temporarily restricted from Northwest and Southwest state roads at this time because of the winter storm. An updating map of road conditions in our area can be found by clicking here .

North Dakota Issues No Travel Advisory In Grand Forks Area

March 25, 2018 / 6:34 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota officials are advising motorists not to travel in the Grand Forks area because of near-zero visibility and icy roads.

The state issued the no travel advisory for the area Sunday. Dan Riddle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks, says at least six inches of snow have fallen in the area, with potential for a few more by evening.

Officials also say a travel alert remains effective for northeastern and parts of southeastern North Dakota because of icy and snow-covered roads and low visibility. That means motorists can still travel, but could encounter roads with difficult winter weather driving conditions.

Riddle says six or more inches of snow are expected in northwest Minnesota by Sunday night. He says central Minnesota could see light snow and freezing rain into Monday.
