Are you looking for inspiration to plan your first cruise ? Take a cinematic voyage with my pick of movies set on a cruise ship.

Not all of these cruise ship movies are masterpieces (although some are). A few are utter stinkers. However, each of them showcases aspects of life on the high seas.

Although I have indicated the availability of these films on Netflix and Amazon Prime there may be regional variations. Information here relates to the UK market in March 2024.

Let’s start with the best movies about cruise ships, from films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to a science fiction classic.

Now, Voyager (1942)

Now, Voyager is not only one of the best movies set on a cruise ship but it is also one of my favourite films of all time. I blub like a baby each time I watch it.

Cowed by her domineering mother, middle-aged neurotic Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (a stupendous Bette Davis) takes a cruise after a restorative stay in a sanatorium. Whilst on board, she falls in love with the married Jerry (Paul Henreid).

The movie is famous for an iconic scene where Paul Henreid’s character lights two cigarettes and gives one to Bette Davis. 

A masterpiece of a movie.

An Affair to Remember (1957)

This melodrama directed by Leo McCarey and starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is considered to be one of the most romantic films of all time.

Playboy Nickie (Grant) and Terry (Kerr) fall in love on a transatlantic cruise to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, they agree to meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. But will all go to plan?

An Affair to Remember was introduced to a new generation of cinema-goers when it was featured in the 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle .

Death on the Nile (1978)

Agatha Christie’s 1937 murder mystery has been adapted for the silver screen three times but the original film version is the best of the bunch (don’t go near Kenneth Branagh’s woeful 2022 remake).

Directed by John Guillermin, Death on the Nile was Peter Ustinov’s first appearance as Hercule Poirot and perhaps his best. Soon after Poirot boards a ship for a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is discovered murdered on board. Who is her murderer?

The Fifth Element (1997)

Welcome to a cruise ship of the future.

For my money, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is up there with the best science fiction movies of all time. Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis giving one of his finest performances) is a 23rd-century cab driver who is unwittingly pulled into a search for a mysterious fifth element that will prevent an apocalyptic event.

Much of the action in the final third of the movie takes place on Fhloston Paradise, a space cruise ship patronised by the rich and powerful. This superliner features twelve swimming pools with two VIP pools, dozens of high-end restaurants and a concert hall.

A glimpse of the future of cruising? Minus the giant fireball of course.

Disaster Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

The poseidon adventure (1972).

The 1970s was the decade for disaster movies featuring all-star ensemble casts and The Poseidon Adventure gets my vote as the best disaster film set on a cruise ship.

This multi-nominated movie – it went on to win two Oscars – centres on the ageing SS Poseidon on her final voyage from New York to Athens. After it is upended by a tsunami on New Year’s Day, it’s a race against time to bring the survivors to safety.

Spoiler alert; not many passengers make it.

Titanic (1997)

The Oscar-winning, multi-nominated Titanic is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Directed by James Cameron and starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, this epic movie about one of the most famous cruise ships in history is also one of the most expensive movies ever made.

The sinking of the Titanic is viewed through the lens of a fictional relationship across the social divide between Rose (Winslet), and Jack (DiCaprio).

A Night to Remember (1958)

Despite Titanic ’s many gongs, I far prefer this treatment of the sinking of the ill-fated cruise ship.

Filmed in a semi-documentary style, A Night to Remember sticks closely to the facts of the ship’s sinking, unimpeded by fictional sub-plots. This riveting film portrays the events of the fateful night of 15 th April 1912 from the perspective of the luxury liner’s second officer, Charles Lightoller (Kenneth More).

Cruise Ship Movies to Make You Laugh

Monkey business (1931).

Monkey Business was the Marx Brothers’ third feature comedy and takes place on a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic to the USA.

Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo play four stowaways who are forced to work for a pair of feuding gangsters to evade capture by the ship’s crew. After the ship docks, the zany quartet become unlikely heroes when one of the gangsters kidnaps the other’s daughter.

Out to Se a (1997)

Out to Sea is not Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon’s finest cinematic outing by any stretch of the imagination but it is a harmless bit of escapist fun.

Hunting for lonely women with hefty bank balances, Charlie (Matthau) coaxes his widower brother-in-law Herb (Lemmon) into working with him as a dance host on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise. Under the watchful eye of the cruise director (played by Brent Spiner from Star Trek ), Charlie pursues wealthy socialite Liz (Dyan Cannon) and Herb unexpectedly falls for Vivian (Gloria DeHaven).

The Parent Trap (1998)

This romantic comedy directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers stars Lindsay Lohan playing the role of identical twins who discover their relationship when they are sent to the same summer camp. The twins then set to work trying to reunite their parents.

While much of The Parent Trap takes place on land, there are some scenes set aboard Cunard’s now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 (they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California).

Like Father (2018)

In this predictable rom-com, jilted bride Rachel (Kristen Bell) ends up on her honeymoon Caribbean cruise with her estranged father Harry (Kelsey Grammer).

Like Father is set aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas , so lovingly filmed that it feels like an infomercial at times.

Carry on Cruising (1962)

Carry on films are a guilty pleasure for me. Cinematic masterpieces they are not but they are silly fun from a more innocent time.

Carry on Cruising is very much in this mould.

Sid James plays Wellington Crowther, the captain of SS Happy Wanderer, who is forced to replace five absent crew members at short notice. Not only are these the most incompetent shipmates to set foot on deck, but the passengers are no picnic.

Musicals Set on Cruise Ships

Gentlemen prefer blondes (1953).

Shot in glorious Technicolor and featuring a razor-sharp screenplay, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is one of the best musical comedies set on the seven seas.

Showgirl Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) sets sail for Paris with her friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), where she plans to marry her wealthy beau, Gus Esmond Jr. However, her plan is placed in jeopardy by the watchful eye of a private detective hired by Mr Esmund Sr. and by Lorelei’s love of diamonds.

Royal Wedding (1951)

Do you fancy on-board entertainment Hollywood-style?

In the run-up to the wedding between the then Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, an American brother-and-sister song-and-dance team Tom (Fred Astaire) and Ellen Bowen (Jane Powell) set sail for London. Then love intervenes for both siblings.

Shall We Dance? (1937)

Was there ever a more perfect recipe than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers performing to the sublime music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin?

Set on a transatlantic sailing from Paris to New York, Shall We Dance? features Astaire as Pete “Petrov” Peters, a Russian ballet dancer, and Rogers as Linda Keene, a musical-comedy star. As a publicity stunt to prolong Linda’s career, her agent leaks to the press that the two performers are married. 

Will a fake marriage turn into the real thing?

This exhilarating musical features some of the greatest songs ever composed, including They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Starring Doris Day in her film debut and choreographed by Busby Berkeley, Romance on the High Seas is a farce with romantic misunderstandings at its heart. Georgia Garret (Day) is a nightclub singer who is hired to assume the identity of a socialite, Elvira Kent, on a cruise to Rio de Janeiro to allow Kent to remain at home to spy on her suspected unfaithful husband,

Filming locations for Romance on the High Seas included Rio de Janeiro and Cartegena in Colombia.

Dramatic Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

Ship of fools (1965).

This eclectic group of passengers on a cruise ship bound for pre-war Germany from Mexico represents a microcosm of 1930s society. Picking up eight Oscar nominations and directed by Stanley Kramer, Ship of Fools features a stellar ensemble cast including Vivien Leigh (in her final film role), Lee Marvin and George Segal.  

Although the action takes place almost entirely on an ocean liner, the movie was filmed on a soundstage at Paramount Studios.

Table for Five (1983)

In this poignant melodrama, divorced father J.P. Tannen (Jon Voight) takes his three children on a Mediterranean cruise in an attempt to reconnect with them. However, he quickly realises that this is not that easy and is faced with an impossible decision when he learns of a tragedy back home.

Partly filmed on MS Vistafjord (built for the now defunct Norwegian American Line ), shooting locations for Table for Five included Rome , Genoa, Haifa in Israel , Athens and Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt.

Speed 2 Cruise Control  (1997)

Keanu Reeves was wise to decline the lead role in this lame sequel to Speed . In his place, Jason Patric teamed up with Sandra Bullock as they battled to get all of the passengers on a Caribbean cruise to safety when disaster strikes.

Seabourn Legend was rented for six weeks to film the movies and its multiple filming locations were used including those in the USA, the Caribbean and France.

And the Award for the Worst Cruise Movie Ever Made Goes to …

Jack and jill (2011).

If you thought that Speed 2 Cruise Control  was bad, this is the cinematic turkey to beat all cinematic turkeys.

Improbably, Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill who join their family on a cruise vacation. Jack and Jill is so unfunny and its plot so preposterous, that I don’t have the will to say any more about it.

This became the first film to sweep the board of the Razzies, winning in each category including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, and Worst Screenplay. The cruise ship scenes were filmed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas .

What Cruise Ship is Like Father set on: Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas

Like Father is one of the newest additions to the cruise ship movie genre. Starring two of Wandermust Family favourite actors in Kristin Bell and Kelsey Grammar. This movie is set almost entirely on the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas. 

This cruise ship movie actually starts out on land where Kristen Bell is left at the alter who then proceeds to head out on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged father – played by the great Kelsey Grammar of Frasier fame. 

Of all the movies filmed on cruise ships I think this one is my favourite as the ship really shines in this movie.

Cruise Ship in Jack and Jill Movie: The Jack and Jill cruise ship is the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas!

I actually watched Jack and Jill on a cruise ship going round the Caribbean and I think watching it on a ship actually improved the experience

This Adam Sandler film where Adam Sandler plays both the lead roles of Jack and Jill, virtually estranged twins that go on a cruise together has been universally panned. And for its efforts won a record total of 10 Razzie Awards. For those that don’t know the Razzies are basically the polar opposite of the Oscars. They are handed out on the afternoon of Oscars night as a reward (if you can call it that) for the worst films of the year. 

Despite all of these accolades (?) it is still a fun film to watch especially for fans of cruise ships who don’t take things too seriously. 

Alvin and the chipmunks – Chipwrecked – one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Cruise Ship in Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked Movie is set on: Carnival Dream

This is one of the more family friendly cruise ship movies. Alvin and chipmunks sequel called Chipwrecked is the second sequel to the 2007 Chipmunks movie. 

Whereas the first is set on land this film is set on the Carnival Dream cruise ship. In the movie the Chipmunks and Chipettes are heading to some music awards via cruise ship. As always with the chipmunk films they don’t listen to Dave and stay in the cabin and escape round the ship to cause mayhem which leads them to being shipwreck or as the film would tell you chipwrecked on an island awaiting rescue. 

Parent trap

This film from 1998 is actually a remake of the Hayley Mills classic from the 60s. When parents Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson split up they each decide to take one twin to raise each – what a great idea. 

Years later siblings reconnect at summer camp and switch places until the parents are reunited onboard a cruise ship. 

The ship isn’t specified however we know it was a Cunard ship that the finale was shot on. 

Hotel Transylvania 3

My daughter is a huge fan of the Hotel Transylvania franchise which stars Adam Sandler, Andy Sandberg and Selena Gomez about vampires who run a hotel for monsters.

The third instalment in the franchise sees them joined by Kathryn Hahn, of  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty  and WandaVision   fame as the captain of a cruise ship for Monsters. 

The ship sets sail to some great mythical locations such as the Lost Island of Atlantis and is a lot of fun for the whole family. 

An affair to remember 1957

This has to be one of the best romantic cruise ship films around dating from the romantic cruising age!

Although this film is more commonly associated with New York and the Empire State building as that is where the meeting at the end of the movie takes place, many people forget that the lovers meteor a cruise ship crossing to New York. 

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953

This is another one of the classic films that features on this list. Gentleman prefers blondes stars the fabulous Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell as they cross the ocean on a luxury liner.

Monroe’s characters is newly engaged and is secretly being investigated by her soon to be father in law who suspects her of marrying for money. 

There is a reason this film always features on the top 100 films of all time and as far as I am aware is the only film that makes it into these lists that features a cruise ship. 

Royal Wedding 1951

A Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic set on board a ship. Expect big musical numbers, great dancing and fabulous costumes. 

Shall We Dance? (1937)

The second film set on a cruise ship starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire that makes it into our list. 

Death on the Nile – one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and my absolute favorite film based on her books is Death on the Nile. 

It has a book that has warranted many adaptions including the recent 2020 version with Gal Godot and Kenneth Branagh. Personally I prefer the older versions but any of the films will delight any murder mystery fan.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

This was Doris Day’s first ever movie and is set on a cruise that is headed to Rio. 

Speed 2 cruise control – one of the best movies about cruise ships

When I was growing up Speed was one of my favorite films. Starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves this film set on a bus  quickly became a modern classic.

The sequel, Speed 2 Cruise Control did not receive such rave reviews but it still a fun watch. Sandra Bullock returned for this sequel set on a cruise ship but Keanu did not. 

I would say that this film is not one to be watched if you are taking your first cruise and are a bit anxious but will be a lot of fun for seasoned cruises. In my opinion this is one of the best action packed movies that take place on a cruise ship. 

Assault on a Queen

Assault on a Queen is a heist film set on a cruise ship starring the great Frank Sinatra. The film was made in the 60s so is one of the older films on the list but it is still well worth a watch. 

The Poseidon Adventure 2006

This 2006 remake is another that isn’t for those that are anxious about cruising but is a great action packed film. A New Years Eve Party goes awry when a rogue wave hits a cruise ship on a transatlantic crossing.

Everyone knows what happened to this famous ocean liner but may not be the best film to watch if you are a new or anxious cruiser. 

Table for Five

This 1983 comedy starring Jon Voight is another cruise film about an estranged father. This time Voight is estranged from three children and takes them on a cruise around the Med in an effort to reconnect. 

Out To Sea 1997

This Walter Mathieu and Jack Lemmon vehicle sees the two posing as dance instructors on a cruise ship. 

The film was filmed on an actual Holland America sailing, on a ship that was then called the Westerdam (another ship holds this name currently). 

Carry on Cruising

I must admit to not being a fan of the Carry on films despite being British and brought up on these films. I personally find the humour very outdated. However if you like the Carry On series you will love Carry on cruising which has all the classic hallmarks of a carry on movie with the added bonus of being set onboard a cruise ship. 

This 2002 Cuba Gooding Junior film was a critical and commercial flop and winner of several Razzies. Cuba Gooding Junior accidentally ends up on a gay cruise. 

Unless you are desperate for a cruise ship movie I would personally give this one a pass. 

Monkey Business (1931)

An early Marx brother film where stowaways have to avoid staff and being caught on a transatlantic voyage.

TV Shows Set on Cruise Ships

I know this isn’t a film but Frasier is one of my all time favorite sitcoms and one of my favorite episodes is The Voyage of the Damned episode taps into many peoples worst fears about what a cruise is like. It is hilarious and is a much watch for cruise fans.

Royal Caribbean’s very own  Harmony of the Seas  makes her Hollywood debut Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, in the Netflix original movie Like Father, starring Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer and Seth Rogen. The ”dramedy”—written, directed and produced by Lauren Miller Rogen—tells the story of Rachel, the workaholic advertising executive who is left at the altar and unexpectedly winds up on her Caribbean honeymoon cruise with the one person she thought she would never see: Her estranged father. Although they depart as strangers with a whole lot of–emotional–baggage, they soon gain a new appreciation for love, life, family and each other.

It’s a laugh-out-loud flick that’s also sure to give you all the feels, and it was filmed on board the action-packed  Harmony . Scenes were shot on our nine-deck-high zip line, Boardwalk, the moving Rising Tide Bar, the Royal Promenade, Boleros (our Latin lounge) and The Perfect Storm trio of waterslides. There’s even a FlowRider cameo! The cast and crew also visited Royal Caribbean’s private island destination in Labadee, Haiti , where the stars took a breathtaking ride on the longest overwater zip line.

To celebrate the film’s release, we are hosting the largest movie premiere at sea. The event will be held across our four Oasis Class ships, the largest cruise ships in the world: Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas , Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas .

We have all the details and you’ll be glad to know that you will find current movies on the Disney Cruise Line, including first-run feature films and 3D movies!

Disney Cruise Movie Theater

Disney Cruise Line’s Buena Vista Theater is located on board each of the Disney cruise ships and seats a little over 250.

While you might find different Disney movies playing depending on how long the cruise lasts, pretty much all of the Disney Cruise Ships (Dream, Fantasy, Magic, Wonder and Wish) will have the same movie lineups.

This is even more true when it comes to new releases.

When a Disney movie comes to the big screen, the Disney Cruise line also gets that movie in its movie theater on the exact same day!

While the theater is a bit smaller than your traditional theater, you will find it feels just like a normal movie theater!

You will find a popcorn cart or refreshment stand that serves popcorn, candy, and canned soda (and beer), but you are free to bring your own with you.

I try to pack snack-sized movie theater candy for our cruise and we’ll stop by the beverage station for drinks before we go to the theater so we don’t have to pay anything extra!

Keep in mind, all themed Disney Cruises will also play non-themed movies as well.

Most of the family movies are run during the day into the early evening.

Later at night, you may find films tailored more toward adults (rated R).

No tickets are needed to see movies at the Buena Vista Theater. You simply show up at the movie time listed in your Personal Navigator, find a seat, and there you have it!

We have never had a problem getting a seat as there are nearly 400 seats in the theater and movies typically run more than once per cruise.

You might want to give yourself a little extra time if you want to purchase concessions because usually there is only one person working the counter.

How to Watch/Stream Amazon, Disney+, ESPN, Hulu (and More) on a Cruise

According to surveys, somewhere around 70-75% of households subscribe to some sort of streaming service, whether that be Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, ESPN or countless others.

And that number looks like it will continue to go higher as their popularity grows and more services are launched.

At the same time, people aren’t just watching streams at home on the couch. Whether it’s on their phone while on a lunch break, or the kids watching a show on a tablet in the car, streaming services can go everywhere with you.

While some people might find it weird to watch a show while on vacation (shouldn’t you be out having fun instead?), many of us like to unwind with a little TV. It’s a great way to relax during the heat of the day when you don’t want to be outside or at night when winding down before you go to sleep.

Of course, being in the middle of the ocean — sometimes hundreds of miles from the nearest land — can cause some hurdles to watching the latest episode in your queue.

So can you stream these services on a cruise? The general answer is yes, but it may not be quite as simple as it is back at home.

Best Way to Watch: Downloading Shows/Movies Before You Sail

If you want to watch Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+ or other streaming services on a cruise, the best way to do so is to download the show you want to watch ahead of time .

All the major streaming services allow downloading at least some of their library for offline viewing. Then, even if you don’t have an Internet connection, or the service is spotty, then you can still watch uninterrupted as the show is already saved to your device.

The big caveat is that for some services not every show will be available to download. Due to licensing rules, not all titles are eligible. So if you are in the middle of watching a series, there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to continue it via download.

You will also need to know what you want to watch ahead of time. If you plan to browse titles after you are on the ship to find something to watch, then you’re going to need to purchase wi-fi access on the cruise ship that allows access to streaming services.

Even so, if you want to watch a program on one of the streaming services, the best idea is to download it beforehand for later watching.

Streaming ESPN, Disney+, HULU, Amazon, and More While on a Cruise Ship

The good news? If you don’t download your shows ahead of time, then yes, you can stream programs like Disney+, ESPN, Amazon Prime, and others while on a cruise ship .

The bad news? It can be costly to do so.

Whereas a few years ago streaming content was largely blocked, cruise lines are moving more toward offering it as a feature of their highest-tier wi-fi plans.

Cruise lines offer several different levels of Internet service, with some ranging from low-tier plans that only allow things like social media to the highest speeds available and full online access.

These top plans can be pricey at between $15-30 per day, depending on the cruise line. On a week-long cruise, you can literally spend hundreds of Internet access.

One thing to keep in mind as well is that while online access is improving, it is still the Internet in the middle of the ocean. There are times where connections can be slow, which makes it hard to stream.

Even so, streaming is possible on most major cruise lines.

Carnival Of all the cruise lines, Carnival seems to be the most restrictive on streaming content. With their highest-level “Premium Wi-Fi Plan,” Carnival says “Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Sunrise are Netflix enabled, so you can use the Netflix app and your Netflix account to watch your favorite shows.” But they also say that the plan does not support video or music streaming.

In other words, you can get Netflix on a handful of ships, but Carnival says video services like Hulu aren’t available. In this case, be sure to download ahead of time.

Royal Caribbean Royal Caribbean offers VOOM , which it claims is the fastest Internet at sea. The cruise line offers two levels of services for VOOM. If you want to stream, then you’ll need to sign up for the upgraded “Surf + Stream” package. Prices will vary, but we recently saw a cost of around $16 per day.

As the name implies, the “Surf + Stream” package offers up support for streaming services like Disney+ and Hulu for movies and TV, so you can watch your shows while at sea. Just know that there still might be places where the connection won’t be as stable as what you’ll find at home. The ship’s position and weather can have an impact. It might be that your show isn’t as crisp and sharp as you might be used to watching.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Of the major cruise lines, Norwegian seems to have the most expensive wi-fi service, but it does allow streaming. To watch Disney+, Amazon, Hulu, EPSN and others, you’ll need to sign up for the “Unlimited Premium Wi-Fi Package.” This package runs $30-35 per day.

With the premium wi-fi, you get access to streaming apps, with NCL specifically mentioning “YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Audible, Hulu, Tik Tok etc.”

Be Sure to Bring Your Own Device

One thing to know is that while things might change in the future, as of now we’ve never seen any sort of streaming apps on the TV in the cabin. Instead, it’s normally just a handful of channels available. 

In other words, you’ll need to bring your own device (phone, tablet, laptop) to watch your streaming apps.

As well, the connections to the TV are typically disabled, so bringing a streaming device like Roku or Amazon Fire won’t work either. Just plan on watching on your own electronics instead of the cabin television.

Final Note: Using Streaming Services Out of the Country

One thing to consider is that streaming services are often tied to your home country. So if you are in the United States, then your available content may be different from what’s available in, say, Mexico.

When on the ship using their satellite Internet, your location may show as different, which could potentially cause issues with the content available. That’s another reason to suggest downloading programs before you sail. This way, you’ll know exactly what’s available, don’t have to pay for expensive Internet, or worry about the strength of the connection due to the ship’s position or weather.

How to Watch Your Own Movies on a Cruise Ship TV

Some people look at spending a week on a cruise ship as a vacation where they will only spend time in their rooms to change clothes and sleep - for the rest of us it's a time to relax. That includes being able to catch up on some of our favorite movies, TV shows, and other videos. Unfortunately, nearly all cruise lines have TERRIBLE programming available on their TVs (I'll give a pass to Princess though since I could never get tired of old re-runs of The Love Boat!). It's not that these TVs can't support HDMI inputs either. The cruise lines have actually gone and disabled them so you are forced to watch their programming instead.

While planning for an upcoming cruise I researched if you could connect your own laptop or portable DVD player to a cruise ship TV but nobody seemed to have a solid answer. Speculation was out there, but there was no actual tutorial or confirmation if it would work on Royal Caribbean - much less other cruise lines such as Carnival, Holland America, or Norwegian. The answer though is YES you can connect a standard HDMI cable to the TV in your cruise ship stateroom. While different cruise ships use different TVs, I suspect that this technique will work quite well not just on Royal Caribbean cruise ships but also at various hotels where I've seen the HDMI port similarly locked out.

Equipment Needed:

Universal Remote Control - I used my Huawei Mate 9 since it comes with a universal remote app. You can also by a stand-alone universal remote control too.

HDMI cable - I recommend using one that is at least 10 feet long so you have some flexibility on where to leave your laptop

Video Source - In this instance, I used my laptop though I suspect this will also work with a game console, portable DVD player etc.

Laptop Remote Control - To take things a step further, you might want to also get a remote for your laptop too ( wireless mini touch pad or a Lenovo Yoga Mouse or a wireless presenter all work well depending on how you plan to use it beyond your cruise). 

How to Connect The HDMI Cable to Your Cruise Ship Cabin TV:

I recommend doing this while you are still docked so that if you need to look up any specific codes you can do that easily. For me though, the Samsung TV used by Royal Caribbean on Oasis of the Seas was one of the first found while cycling through the options on Huawei's app. While each universal remote control is going to be slightly different, I suspect that since this was found so easily that it is a VERY common TV and that probably holds true for other cruise lines too.

Once you've confirmed the correct frequency code, your universal remote will now function to fully control the TV including not just input switching but also volume, channel changes, etc.

The first thing you should do is examine the TV and look for any external buttons and ports. In TVs that I've looked at on three different cruise lines, they all have buttons - but they don't function. In our cabin (a Junior Suite on Oasis of the Seas), it was VERY easy to access the HDMI port as well as other inputs. I was able to tilt the TV forward slightly and plug the cable right in. Not all cruise ship TVs will be that easy to access the ports, but you should be able to still make things work.

Once the cable is plugged into the TV, plug the other end into your laptop and tap the input selection button on your remote.

If everything is setup properly on your video source, you should now have that displayed on the cruise ship TV!

Don't Be a Dick and Abuse Your New Power!

Like many "hacks" that I do, it's more about seeing if I can do something than actually abusing the power. Some cruise ships lock you out so that they can offer your Pay Per View movies, while others simply offer free movie channels. If your cruise line offers movie rentals, be a good guy and save yourself some time by taking advantage of that service vs hogging the internet connection downloading it for free. 

Above anything else - be responsible! When you are done using your laptop or Xbox / PlayStation / Nintendo game console, PLEASE make sure to switch the inputs back to the official input so that the next occupant of the cabin can have a great experience too.

Death and Other Details Review: Hulu's Whodunit Mystery Takes Itself Too Seriously

On paper, Hulu's  Death and Other Details  has all the makings of a great whodunit: entitled rich people living their best lives, an outsider who has infiltrated the inner circle, the working class that hates them all, and a disgraced detective trying to make a splashy comeback. So it's disappointing that, in reality, the series never quite pops. 

With the resurgence of whodunits thanks to projects like  Knives Out, Only Murders in the Building,  and Kenneth Branagh's modernized Poirot movies, any new one has big (gum)shoes to fill. The detective at the center of the case is key to keeping the audience engaged in solving the murder. In  Death and Other Details , Mandy Patinkin steps into that role as Rufus Cotesworth, the world's greatest detective. 

Or at least he was, until he was unable to solve the case of a murdered woman with ties to a powerful family. Through flashbacks, we learn Cotesworth fled midway through the investigation, leaving the family and the dead woman's daughter, Imogene (played as a child by Sophia Reid-Gantzert and in the present by Violett Beane ), behind. 

In the present day, Cotesworth shows up on a luxury cruise ship commandeered by that same family to celebrate the retirement of its patriarch, Lawrence ( David Marshall Grant ). There is a colorful cast of characters aboard, including Lawrence's entitled kids, Tripp ( Jack Cutmore-Scott ) and Anna ( Lauren Patten ); the commandeering head of staff, Teddy ( Angela Zhou ); and Imogene, whose complicated relationship with the family leaves her straddling both worlds. 

When one of the guests is suddenly murdered, Imogene and Cotesworth are thrown together to solve the case, bringing the past and present together through flashbacks, re-enactments, and interrogations set against colorful backdrops and featuring beautiful costumes.

Death and Other Details

• Lots of larger-than-life suspects
• A fun setting
• Great costumes and scenery
• Takes itself too seriously
• Too much exposition
• Too many complicated twists

It's got almost everything Agatha Christie could ever want from a murder mystery, but Death and Other Details  lacks fun. When dealing with suspects, a show like this needs to toe the line between believable and outlandish. It needs lighter moments to balance the morbid situation at hand. Rather than lean into those moments and play up its quirks, Death goes the other way.

It's not just the characters who take themselves too seriously. Class division and wealth are the topic of way too many conversations, hitting viewers over the head rather than letting people draw their own conclusions. The ship's setup is very  Upstairs, Downstairs or Downton Abbey , and the theme seems obvious enough without the constant exposition. 

There are moments when the show borders on fun. A karaoke scene between siblings, a night of unbridled passion, and an ongoing storyline involving one guest broadcasting the case for his social media following are some of the standout lighter moments. The series could use more of them. 

As for Cotesworth, he, too, is too serious. Patinkin easily commands a scene, but he doesn't exude the charm you want from your lead guy. His strongest scenes are those in which he's most animated, such as a talk show flashback in a later episode or his interactions with his partner at the office. On the ship, however, he's tightly wound and private, offering gruff advice to Imogene as he lets her lead the investigation.

Unfortunately, Imogene is an unsympathetic character. Finding her mother's killer is what drives her, but it often undermines the importance of solving the murder at hand (even if it may be the same killer). She's got access to money, beauty, and brains, and plenty of people on the ship seem to fall for her quickly. Given everything she has so readily accepted in life, it's hard to root for her and her hypocrisy. 

As for the case itself, it's hard to tell whether a satisfying ending is in store. Hulu released eight of the ten installments to the press, and although a new suspect comes to light in each episode, it's hard to tell where the story is going. Many of the reveals come via flashbacks off the ship, retold while a present-day Imogene or Cotesworth steps back into a scene to discuss information as it unfolds.

Despite the ship's isolated nature, some passengers come and go, and it doesn't take long for the case at hand to grow into a larger conspiracy that's no longer contained. That's fine for a thriller or psychological drama. But part of the fun of whodunits is discerning the killer and making educated guesses based on the clues others may have missed, without stretching too far outward.

In other words, it's all about the  Details . And while there are still two episodes for this story to come full circle, it will take a lot of pulling back and simplifying to get to that satisfactory ending.

Waterslides on steroids seem to be a must on any mega-ship. They may wrap around half a cruise ship deck, like Disney Cruise Line’s AquaMouse on the new ship, Disney Wish, or swirl from one deck down two or three decks below, like on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas. 

FlowRider Simulators

FlowRider simulates what it’s like to go surfing. But don’t worry about fish, coral, and other sea creatures because the current you ride is on water flowing above a manufactured blue “sea.” (You don’t even have to worry about duck-diving as surfers do in the ocean!) 

Who says you need to be on terra firma for zip lining? Ditch the jungle zip lines for cruise zip lines! 

It’s by no means the same experience (for starters, there’s only one or two lines on ships, not five or seven, and they’re short on most ships), but it’s fun nonetheless. Several Royal Caribbean ships have zip lines, and MSC Cruises has dueling zip lines. 

Ride a Roller Coaster at Sea

Carnival Mardi Gras has a roller coaster at sea. Yes, a roller coaster…at sea! Carnival describes BOLT as the “fastest and first” seacoaster. You manage your speed, so you can zip from start to finish or start off a bit slower your first time on the coaster if you please.

Fireworks on the Water

It may not be surprising that a Disney Cruise Line sailing includes a firework show one night!

Royal Caribbean’s North Star is a mechanical arm with a pod on the end that takes guests far above the cruise ship’s top deck – and the ocean. 300 Feet above sea level, to be exact. This attraction currently holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship.

Another truly unique experience is Carnival’s SkyRide. This double-track ride allows guests to ride a “bicycle” high in the sky for unparalleled views from above.

Rock Climbing Walls

Anyone who has been rock climbing knows what a great workout it is. So skip the gym and head to a rock climbing wall aboard Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line.

Ropes Courses

If you like a challenge in the form of some heights and a balancing act, you’ll love going through ropes courses on cruise ships. Carnival has their SkyCourse , and Norwegian Cruise Line has a three-story ropes course.

Ice Skating Rink

Put on some skates and go on a romantic date (or family outing) aboard Royal Caribbean. This fun sport is the perfect activity for holding hands. If you’ve never tried it, a cruise is an ideal place to cure those cold feet. 

Whether or not you want to try it yourself, Royal Caribbean has professional ice skaters onboard for wonderfully entertaining performances at night. 

Kids of all ages will have a blast playing laser tag! Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have exciting and fun laser tag courses (some complete with black lights and others in the open air) where you can try your best to beat the other team. 

Movie Theaters and Planetariums

Movie theaters may be a dime a dozen on cruise ships. Most ships have a movie theater either by a pool or a dedicated theater with stadium seating. 

However, it’s worth mentioning that Cunard cruise ships have planetariums onboard! That’s right: out-of-this-world, universe-exploring planetariums! Set sail for the stars while you’re sailing on the sea. 

Music at Sea

In addition to many cruise lines having lounges where bands play nightly (whether jazz musicians or a guitarist and singer, for instance), some ships have other interesting musical acts. 

Norwegian Cruise Line even has dueling pianos, a partnership with Howl at the Moon.

Miniature Golf

If you love a playful round of miniature golf, you’ll love this activity on cruises. It is likely to be a fun activity on board that allows you to get fresh air, but it’ll also provide a little fun competition. Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line offer mini-golf.

Sports Entertainment

Cruise lines try to have the best onboard sports facilities possible, knowing that many cruise guests enjoy being active. This includes anything from onboard basketball courts, indoor (like on the Disney Wish ) and outdoor (like aboard Princess Cruise Ships), to golf simulators.

They stay on top of the times too! A perfect example of this is the addition of pickleball courts to many cruise ships .

Cruise ships big and small are adding courts to attract people who love the sport or want to try it. AmaWaterways, a river cruise line, has added pickleball courts and big ships, like on Celebrity Cruises or Holland American Line.

Adults-Only Entertainment on Cruises 

In addition to cruise ship entertainment available for all ages, adult-only specific entertainment is available on cruise ships. 

For example, on many large and small ships, whether ocean or river cruise ships , you’ll be able to gamble in a casino, and on larger vessels, you’ll enjoy adults-only bars and nightclubs day and night.  

Cruise Ship Entertainment on Small Ships

These ships typically carry less than 1,000 passengers (often half that or less) and have more limited options yet cater to an older audience. Small cruise ship lines definitely want to entertain their passengers, yet the ports are often the main attraction. 

This means that there is undoubtedly onboard cruise ship entertainment, yet absent are rides for thrill seekers that need to one-up other cruise lines. 

Musical performances

SeaDream Yacht Club, for example, has an onboard piano bar where you can enjoy some live music as you wind down for the evening. 

A Danube River Cruise may present you with local performers, such as a group of German brass horn players while the ship is docked in Bavaria. 

Theatrical Performances 

Some small cruise ships entertain guests with theatrical performances at night – dance and drama included. For instance, American Queen Voyages, which primarily sails the Great Lakes and American Rivers, has an onboard theater with Broadway-caliber productions. 

Another example is Hungarian dancers that come on board to dance to a live band when you sail rivers in Europe . 

Crafts and Cooking Demonstrations

Some small ship cruises focus on cooking. Not just the cuisine served in the dining rooms but demonstrations . Scenic has a particular area for this purpose. Look for cruise itineraries with guest chefs of James Beard Award fame or Top Chef celebrity. 

Additionally, they may bring craft specialists onboard. Cruisers aboard Emerald Cruises may find themselves painting a pair of clogs when they sail on a river cruise in The Netherlands, doubling as a take-home souvenir.

44-foot whale found dead on bow of cruise ship as it came into New York

A 44-foot endangered whale was found dead on the bow of a cruise ship as it sailed into New York City on Saturday.

The whale — a female Sei whale — was discovered as MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia docked at the Port of Brooklyn, according to The Associated Press.

“We can confirm with deep regret that on Saturday a whale was discovered on the bow of our ship as the vessel approached the port of New York,” an MSC spokesperson said in a statement.

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” they added.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life. We have comprehensive measures in place to help avoid collisions, such as training all our deck officers with the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) and we follow regulations designed to protect whales and other marine life,” the statement continued.

“This includes altering itineraries in certain regions to avoid whales and we will continue to evaluate and update our procedures with our partners and the authorities,” the company said.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , Sei whales are endangered. They are typically found in deeper waters far from the coastline, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said on Facebook.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society performed a necropsy on the whale, but has not yet determined if the animal was dead when the ship hit it or whether it was killed by the impact.

The whale was towed to shore at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said in a Facebook post that a “necropsy examination (animal autopsy) revealed evidence of tissue trauma along the right shoulder blade region and a right flipper fracture. The whale’s gastrointestinal tract was also full of food.”

“Most of the other organs were sampled as well for toxicology and other life history studies,” the message added. “The tissue and bone samples collected will help biologists determine if the vessel interaction occurred pre or post mortem,”

The victim was identified to be Daron Davis, 27, from Canton, Ohio.

A late night shooting inside an Ohio movie theater has left one man dead, police said.

The shooting took place at approximately 11 p.m. when the Massilon Police Department were notified of a shooting inside a Regal Cinemas movie theater in Massilon, Ohio -- some 50 miles south of Cleveland.

“Massilon Police Officers responded and found a male deceased near the front lobby,” authorities said in their statement early Saturday morning detailing the shooting. “The victim was identified to be Daron Davis, 27, from Canton Ohio.”

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., police say a suspect was taken into custody outside the Massilon Police Department. Authorities did not disclose the identity of the suspect or reveal a possible motive in the killing.

Additional details on the shooting were not immediately available and the investigation is currently ongoing.
