Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Melbourne Cruise Port

Melbourne is a dream city for foodies. You can find just about any type of cuisine and dish that you’re craving here, ranging from delectable budget eats to exquisite fine dining. Those on Melbourne cruises head to Lygon street for Italian cuisine. Vegans will appreciate the Organic Food & Wine Deli. If you’re craving Asian food, visit Melbourne’s Chinatown or go to the South Melbourne Market (especially famous for its dim sims). For views, you’ll find a number of restaurants and cafes along Acland Street in the waterfront neighborhood of St. Kilda, and Greek food in the aptly named Greek Precinct. It’s also where you’ll find some of Melbourne’s famous cake shops, which are as tasty as they sound and perfect for a dessert. Grab a slice (or a whole cake) and a few forks to enjoy on the beach before heading back to your ship.

You can’t skip out on having a cup of coffee in Melbourne, which is often said to have the best coffee in the world. The baristas who create these decadent coffee and espresso drinks treat their coffee-making skills like a true craft of art, both in taste and presentation.

Culture & History of the Melbourne Cruise Port

Melbourne was founded in 1835, making it a fairly new city by world standards, especially since it’s so populated and plays such a key role in the economy of the Australian state of Victoria. The roots of the current city makeup of Melbourne were formed when businessmen from the nearby island of Tasmania were looking to start a port settlement and lost out on a bid to do so in Port Phillip. Even before it was proclaimed a settled city, the land of Melbourne was inhabited by the Kulin Nation, which the city of Melbourne respectfully recognizes as being the traditional land of this indigenous culture. The Kulin Nation still views Melbourne as a place of significant importance where its people can gather, work, and socialize, just as they did before British colonists settled the land. Today, Melbourne is known as a melting pot of cultures, rich in restaurants and international cuisine and a thriving art scene.

Melbourne Port Facilities & Location

Cruise ships will dock at Station Pier in Port Melbourne, which is a short walk away from public transportation that will take you into the city center. Most people head straight into the city, but there are also some souvenir shops and eateries within walking distance of the pier.

Transportation in Melbourne

Melbourne has a convenient tram system that connects the pier with the city center and other sights around the city. In addition, Melbourne has an extensive bus system. Taxis are available to hire by the pier or at one of the taxi ranks around the city center. Trains that connect with other towns and cities in Australia can be boarded at Flinders Street Station or Southern Cross Station.

Shopping Near the Melbourne Cruise Port

The attractive Bourke Street Mall boasts great shopping along a pedestrian-only street. Wander down the picturesque street and duck into the stores housing popular brand names. Another great place for shopping that you can get to from the port for Melbourne cruises is the Melbourne Emporium, which is a fairly new complex that offers popular shops in a modern setting.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The currency used in Melbourne is the Australian dollar. You’ll find ATMs located around the city dispensing Australian dollars. In addition, most businesses accept credit cards. It’s common in Melbourne and the rest of Australia to leave a tip, but it may be a smaller amount than what you’re used to at home. Tipping 10% of the total bill at a restaurant is the usual amount expected, while most people just round up to the nearest whole dollar amount for taxi service or a drink at cafes and bars.

Melbourne Cup 2022 Preview

Track: Slow-Heavy Weather: Showers

A full field of 24, including six mares, will line up for Australia’s most famous race –  the $7,750,000 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup. Seven of them had their last start in the Caulfield Cup , two in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup , two in the Cox Plate , two in the Geelong Cup and four had their last start overseas. Others runners came via the Rosehill Gold Cup , Archer Stakes , The Bart Cummings , ATC St Leger, Bendigo Cup and the Metropolitan . Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have five runners, Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott have two runners, Robert Hickmott has two and Danny O’Brien has two.

The clear cut favourite in the early betting is UK runner  Deauville Legend . He is the most lightly raced runner with only seven starts for three wins and three places and had his last race over 2385m at York on 17 August which he won by 2.8 lengths, but there were only 6 runners. Second favourite is another UK runner  Without A Fight  who has strong international form and had his last race over 2414m at Newmarket where he ran 2.3 lengths 2nd. Third favourite is  Realm Of Flowers  trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman who was narrowly beaten in The Metropolitan at her last run on 1 October.

Montefilia  was well back and got held up before flashing home late for a length 4th in the Caulfield Cup.  Gold Trip  was 2nd in the Caulfield Cup before 2.9 lengths 9th in the Cox Plate where he wasn’t suited by the tight Moonee Valley track.  Hoo Ya Mal  is another overseas raider with 2 wins and six places from 9 starts.  Smokin’ Romans  won the Naturalism and the Turnbull before 2.3 lengths 7th in the Caulfield Cup.  Lunar Flare  won The Bart Cummings then was 2nd in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, while  Knights Order  ran 4th in the Turnbull then 3rd in the Caulfield Cup. All other runners are currently $30 or longer.

The only horses to have won over 3200m are  Vow And Declare  (the 2019 Melbourne Cup winner),  Knights Order  and  Daqiansweet Junior .  Vow And Declare  has won most prizemoney ($6m), courtesy of the 2019 Cup, followed by  Duais  ($2.9m),  Montefilia  ($2.8m) and  Knights Order  ($2.4m).  Montefilia  has the most Group 1 wins (4), followed by  Duais  with 3.

As always there are many hopes in the Cup and a long price has never stopped a horse from winning.

Melbourne Cup Runner by Runner

1. gold trip.

Finished second in the Caulfield Cup, then was very unlucky not to be in the finish in the Cox Plate.  Got a pretty average steer there.  The trip has to be some query here but he loves wet ground.  In the mix.

Had a terrific Autumn which included a win in the Australian Cup here.  Appears to have been a length or two below her best this spring although this has been the target all along!

3. Knights Order

Won the Sydney Cup in the Autumn over 3200m on a wet track.  Arguably has come back a better horse this prep.  Thought his run in the Caulfield Cup was excellent – they just went way too slow on him!  Finished 19th in this race last year. Should find the top again here.  Looks a genuine top three chance!

4. Montefilia

Her run in the Caulfield Cup last start was excellent – probably goes close to winning it with a better ride.  The distance is a query for me.

5. Numerian

Another who is going well this preparation.  He was a very solid run in the Caulfield Cup.  Would be surprised if he finished top three here though.

6. Without A Fight

Irish Raider with good form overseas.  Has carried big weights and only has 55kg here. Gets international rider William BUick.

Another Irish horse. Has won over 2800m.

8. Deauville Legend

The boom horse from the UK.  Has been heavily backed over the last few months in all in markets and looks set to start a warm favourite.  He won the Great Voltigeur at York easily at his last start beating El Bodegon who subsequently ran really well in the Cox Plate.  Wet ground is an unknown but if he handles it he looks clearly the one to beat.

9. Stockman

Lovely staying type. Only finished midfield in the Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) on Saturday, but the start before was impressive with a big win in the ATC St Leger over 2600m. Chance at big odds.

10. Vow And Declare

Won this race three years ago.  Has improved with every run this campaign and has one of the inform jocks on.  I have him finishing somewhere in the 5-10 bracket.

11. Young Werther

Ran well here in the Turnbull, then poked around in the Cox Plate and wasn’t beaten far.  This has been his grand final all along.  First four chance.

12. Hoo Ya Mal

European import with 2 wins and 6 places from 9 starts.

13. Serpentine

Finished 2nd in the Lexus Archer Stakes (2500m) on Derby Day which was the best of his Australian runs.

14. Daqiansweet Junior

This years Adelaide Cup winner.  Thought he was disappointing in the Bart Cummings last start.  Prefer others.

15. Grand Promenade

Finished 6th in last year’s Melbourne Cup but hasn’t won since then. Handles rain-affected ground.

16. Arapaho

Finished 1.8 lenghs 2nd to Stockman in the St Leger at his latest start.

17. Emissary

Terrific win in the Geelong Cup last start.  Good gaps back to the third horse there and we know the Geelong Cup has been a good form reference for this in times gone by.  No weight on his back.  Place chance.

18. Lunar Flare

Secured her spot in the field by winning the Bart Cummings here on October 1.  Was a really good second last start in the Moonee Valley Cup.  Going super and is a genuine top 6 chance.

19. Smokin’ Romans

Won the Naturalism then proved it was no fluke winning the Turnbull at his next start. Subsequently jumped a well supported favourite in the Caulfield Cup where he was a touch disappointing although may of have had excuses.  Wouldn’t shock to see him run a place here.

20. Tralee Rose

Finished 9 th  in the race last year.  Improved showing in the Caulfield Cup last start finding the line quite nicely.  But I can’t see her finishing in the top 6.

21. Point Nepean

Won the Andrew Ramsden in May to lock away his spot in the field.  His two runs this campaign have been pretty ordinary.  The stable know what they are doing but I have to be against him here.

22. High Emocean

Won the Bendigo Cup last Wednesday and is super fit looking. With only 50kg on her back I think she can make her presence felt.

23. Interpretation

Ran 0.9 length 3rd in the Bart Cummings then 6th in the Gellong Cup where he pulled up lame. Not the worst.

24. Realm Of Flowers

Won the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington over 2800m back in May. Was a close 3rd in a blanket finish in The Metropolitan last start nd wouldn’t surprise to see her place.

Emotional jockey Mark Zahra reacts after Gold Trip wins the 2022 Melbourne Cup

Sport Emotional jockey Mark Zahra reacts after Gold Trip wins the 2022 Melbourne Cup

Mark Zahra smiles while holding the Melbourne Cup above his head

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra says it is "unbelievable" that he guided Gold Trip to victory.

Zahra rode brilliantly to guide the French stayer to victory, less than three weeks after it finished second in the Caulfield Cup.

"I can't [put this into words]. I feel like crying. It's unbelievable. What a day," he said.

"He's a horse that when you go, you don't give him a chance to think about it. I was hoping no-one would come near me."

Emissary finished second and High Emocean came third.

Favourite Deauville Legend finished strongly, but could only manage fourth.

An emotional Zahra spoke of the difference between 2022 and last year, when he was suspended and lost the ride on eventual winner Verry Elleegant.

"This time last year [I was] in Byron Bay and I was getting told off [by my wife] for drinking too much and it could have been my ride," he told Channel 10.

"I said, 'What do you want me to do? My horse [Verry Elleegant] just won the Melbourne Cup?'

"For today, to come today and I've got good mates in the horse and it's unbelievable.

"Redemption day today. Just a miracle."

Gold Trip runs them down

Gold Trip ran from barrier 13 in a 22-horse field after the scratchings of Point Nepean and Lunar Flare.

The field of 22 horses runs around the first turn in the Melbourne Cup, with grandstands full of fans in the background.

The race was held on a soft 7 surface after the track was downgraded following some showers late-morning.

There was a scramble for the lead at the start, with horses racing up to seven wide as Zahra kept Gold Trip midfield, drifting back to the second half of the field.

Frontrunner Serpentine took control at halfway, with Tralee Rose and Smokin' Romans second and third.

Internationals Deauville Legend and Without A Fight found the fence, with Knights Order out wide.

Locals Duais and 2019 winner Vow and Declare were up with the field.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Knights Order hit the front after the 1,000m with Smokin' Romans, then began to go clear on his own.

Knights Order pinched a break on the turn, with Without A Fight and Deauville Legend moving into position.

The winning jockey stand up in the irons and raises his arm as he rides the Melbourne Cup winner with the field behind him.

In the straight, Smokin' Romans hit the front at the 450m, but Deauville Legend and Gold Trip came down the outside.

Zahra and Gold Trip grabbed the lead before the 250m, and the pair went clear, as Emissary finished strongly to take second and Bendigo Cup-winner High Emocean finished third ahead of the favourite.

"I've got the Cup with me and I can't stop looking at it knowing it's something that can never be taken away," Zahra told ABC Radio Melbourne.

After making a late surge in the final moments of the race, Zahra said the final stretch after taking the lead was agonising.

"I looked up and thought 'oh jeez, there's still a fair way to go here', the last 100 [metres] felt like it went forever, I couldn't wait for that post," he said.

Gold Trip, a French-bred horse, came fourth in French classic Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe in 2020, before coming to Australia last year to join trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Zahra said he hadn't been confident that Gold Trip would last the 3,200m cup distance.

The two trainers of the Melbourne Cup winner stand either side of the winning jockey, all holding trophies after the race.

Gold Trip had run second in the Caulfield Cup, then backed up for an eighth-place finish in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley 10 days ago.

The six-year-old went on to make history, becoming only the third topweight in nearly seven decades to win the Cup, joining three-time winner Makybe Diva (2005) and Rising Fast (1954).

Race 10 – MMS Security Sprint

Trainer Grahame Begg experienced the highs and lows of racing at Flemington.

On race morning his Melbourne Cup runner Lunar Flare was scratched from the big race but the Cranbourne trainer was awarded with a win in the last as Vespetine finished over the top of her rivals to score.

Danny Williams' cult hero Shelby Sixtysix enjoyed the downpour of rain prior to the last event and turned his form around, running a credible second ahead of Crestani.

Race 9 – Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes

Larkspur Run held off a wall of horses to win the 2022 edition of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes.

The classy filly hadn't won since July in 2021 but rarely performed poorly and was rewarded with a stakes victory on Tuesday.

It also gave star jockey Jamie Kah her first winner of the day.

Race 8 – Benchmark 90 Handicap

Just under an hour after winning the Melbourne Cup with Gold Trip, trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace struck another blow with Detonator Jack.

Given a gun ride by John Allen, Detonator Jack stormed home over the top of his rivals late to score.

It was a dead heat for second with Nugget and Munhamek splitting the prizemoney.

Gold Trip has proven too good for them in the 2022 edition of the Melbourne Cup.

The classy import has given jockey Mark Zahra and trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace their first victory in the great race.

It was only Gold Trip's second win but he had gone so close having just been edged off by Durston in the Caulfield Cup.

Geelong Cup winner Emissary has run out of his skin to finish second while Gold Trip's stablemate, High Emocean, was third.

The favourite Deauville Legend seemed to have every chance and could only manage fourth.

The Big Dance trophy is heading to Newcastle with Kris Lees as Rustic Steel proved too tough for his rivals.

Rustic Steel held off a fast finishing Cisco Bay while the Annabel Neahsam-trained Sibaaq ran credibly in third.

Old Flame led and under the big weight stuck on to finish fourth.

Melbourne Cup favourite Deauville Legend has drifted out to $4.40 with TAB.

The classy import has been as short as $3.40 today but that price has moved out as the money comes for Realm Of Flowers ($8.50) and also Montefilia ($9).

Knights Order has also tightened from $16 into $13.

Race 6 – Melbourne Cup Day Plate

A freshen up and back in trip proved a winning formula for Bartolomeu Dias, giving Sydney hoop Tommy Berry and trainer Annabel Neasham a winner on Melbourne Cup day.

The jockey/trainer combo will be hoping for a similar result with Numerian at 3pm.

The well-travelled son of Mount Nelson, who last ran in the Toowoomba Cup, has now won four of five over 1800m.

Runner up Just Folk was game in defeat, racing wide with the top weight and sticking on to just get beat while third placegetter Lord Vladivostok struck plenty of traffic and only got out when the race was over.

Race 6 tips – Melbourne Cup Day Plate

Keen to be with consistent galloper JUST FOLK (1). Just found one better last start, that was a genuine Group 1 horse in Cascadian, and the soft rated track suits him to a tee. Value at $6.

Race 5 – Super Vobis 3YO Plate

James Cummings and Godolphin had four runners in the Super Vobis 3YO Plate, including the two favourites, but it was the $41 shot winning with Renosu scoring at a big price.

Ridden to victory by Blake Shinn, Renosu stormed over the top of stablemate Kin to salute.

Shinn now has a double after piloting Love Tap to win race three.

Flemington's track has been downgraded following a downpour of rain.

It's now a Soft 7 after it was posted as a Soft 5 this morning.

Race 5 tips – Super Vobis 3YO Plate

Would be more confident if it was still dry but will stick with SELOUS (15). Freakish winner at Goulburn two back and complete forgive run last start at Randwick where it was impossible to make ground. Saving on KATSU (12) at odds.

Race 4 – Trophy Stakes

A thrilling battle in the Trophy Stakes with Lindermann and High Approach going stride-for-stride in the straight but the latter proved too strong in the end.

Trainer Archie Alexander had the three-year-old peaking third-up out to 1800m for the first time and he seemed to relish the rainy conditions at Flemington.

Jockey Ben Melham told Racing.com in a post race interview that the track has degraded significantly following a downpour of rain.

The Patrick Payne-trained Quang Tri was one of the best backed runners across today's meeting but couldn't let down in the straight after stepping slowly from the wide barrier.

The Cameron Crockett-trained Salire came from the clouds to win the Highway at Randwick.

Salire spotted Miss Kirribilli at least eight lengths at the 250m mark, Nash Rawiller got him to the outside before flying home to salute.

Race 4 tips – Trophy Stakes

Hard to go past the favourite QUANG TRI (12). She was a handy winner first-up at 1400m and is going to enjoy the rise in trip. Tough as nails and loaded with ability.

Race 3 – Subzero Handicap

There's not much more beautiful sight than watching the greys do battle at Flemington and it was talented grey Love Tap powering home for an impressive first-up victory.

The son of Tapit was piloted to victory by in form hoop Blake Shinn, who rides Vow And Declare in the Melbourne Cup later in the card.

1 – Love Tap

3 – Struck By

4 – Cormorant

Victoria Racing Club has referred an act of Melbourne Cup day track vandalism to Victoria Police for investigation.

News Corp has established that a liquid substance was poured onto the surface at the 1500m mark.

The damaged section, a reasonably low traffic area thankfully, was discovered well before the first race on Tuesday.

Slippery or shifting patches of turf can be incredibly dangerous to both horse and rider.

Stewards walked the affected area twice, following remedial work, and deemed the track safe for racing.

“The track has been deemed safe for racing by RV Stewards with no impact on the conduct of today's meeting,” RV reported.

A vandal has broken into Flemington Racecourse and pumped an unknown, oily substance onto the track hours before the famous Melbourne Cup race day. #9News https://t.co/Q58aXgb155 — 9News Melbourne (@9NewsMelb) November 1, 2022

An emotional win in the opening race at Randwick with Nautical Miss, formerly trained by the late Gwenda Markwell, scored an easy victory.

The highly respected trainer Markwell sadly passed on Friday evening after a battle with cancer.

Race 3 tips – Subzero Handicap

Think LOVE TAP (1) can turn in a cheeky performance first-up. He's been fitted with two trials ahead of today and last time at the trip he beat Looks Like Elvis up in Brisbane. Each-way bet.

Race 2 – The Macca's Run

White Marlin stamped himself as a horse with plenty of promise after belting them by five lengths in The Macca's run.

The son of Mastercraftsman is now five from five to start his career and relished the step up in trip to 2800m.

From a wide alley, Tim Clark was patient and took his time to roll across and sit outside the leader.

Asked for an effort at the 400m mark, White Marlin quickly put a few lengths on them and was home.

Co-trainer Adrian Bott indicated post race that the Sandown Cup over two miles could possibly be on the cards for the talented import.

Race 2 tips – The Macca's Run

Hard to ignore the favourite WHITE MARLIN (7). He's four from four and beat the subsequent Victoria Derby winner Manzoice two back at Rosehill. Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott should have him spot on for today.

Race 1 – Maribyrnong Plate

Blowout result in the opener on Cup day as rank outside Krakarib leads throughout to win the Maribyrnong Plate.

He was one of two in the field that had the advantage of a race start and improved greatly, turning the tables on favourite Zulfiqar after being beaten four lengths by that horse on debut.

This time Krakarib showed his pace, settling at the front of the pack after he was midfield on debut.

They ran 58.52 for the 1000m contest.
