While Halong Bay and Ho Chi Minh City are the biggest magnets for tourists in Vietnam, the distance between these two attractions is quite something. I. How Far is It from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay?

For such a distance, the best and fastest way to reach Halong Bay is by taking a 2-hour direct flight to Van Don Airport.

For those seeking a seamless, stress-free journey, traveling by air is your best choice . However, there are quite a few ways to travel by airplane from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay. Take a look at the following table:

Note: Generally speaking, Vietnam Airlines is the priciest airline, providing inclusive meals, water and more free baggage allowance. Bamboo Airways is medium-priced, while Vietjet Air is the cheapest. To find the most suitable means of transportation from Hanoi to Halong Bay, check out our article Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay.

Regarding cost, you’ll need to spend about 10 USD per day to rent a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City and return it in Hanoi. Gasoline is not quite a matter, a liter of gasoline only costs 1 USD.

It’s said that the total amount you pay will be more than enough to enjoy a direct flight. All things considered, airplanes are the most efficient way to travel.

How To Travel From Ho Chi Minh City To Halong Bay

  • Option 1: Fly direct to the nearest airport to Halong bay
  • Reunification Train
  • Sleeper Bus
  • Summary of transport options from Ho Chi Minh city to Halong

Halong Bay is about as far away from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) as you can go. Ho Chi Minh City is in the most southern part of the country whereas Halong Bay is in the most northern part, close to the border. The distance between the two is a whopping 1700 kilometers (around 1050 miles).

How To Travel From Ho Chi Minh City To Halong Bay

  • 1700 km is the distance between Ho Chi Minh city to Halong bay.
  • Taking a 2 hour non-stop flight to Van Don airport is the most convenient and fastest way to get to Halong bay.

That being said, there are several ways to cover the distance between Ho Chi Minh City and Halong Bay.

The best and fastest way to get to Halong Bay (Van Don airport) from Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat Airport) would be via airplane. You can cover the distance in about two hours. Flights leave daily and are operated by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways. One-way tickets start from $65 with several early flights in the morning and one flight leaving early in the afternoon.

Beware that there might be significant price gaps between airlines; this is mainly because the more expensive airlines will serve drinks and a meal and checked luggage will be included. Always carefully check how much luggage allowance you have and if food and beverages are provided.

Option 2: Travel to Hanoi, then Halong bay

The following modes of transportation will go from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and then you’ll have to arrange additional transportation to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay. See our Hanoi to Halong Bay page for more information.

For more adventurous travelers, and those who have a bit more time, an interesting way to see the country is traveling by bike. You can rent a bike in Ho Chi Minh City and return it in Hanoi. Prices for rental are about $10 a day or $250 a month (Honda XR/CRF 150cc). Gas is not too expensive in Vietnam with the price for one liter (0.26 gallon) being around $1.

The train that runs between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi is called the Reunification Express. A train leaves for Hanoi a few times a day. The journey takes about 33 hours so be sure to be well prepared for the trip (water, snacks, etc.). There will be a few stops along the way where you will be able to buy food and drinks with a service on board the train as well.

Be aware that the service is not up to western standards. During stops, you should not stray too far from the train as it could depart at any time. You can catch the train at the Saigon railway station located on 1 Nguyen Thong Street, Ward 9 District 3. Seats start at around $40 but you might want to pay about $20 more for a berth as you might want to catch some shut-eye during the trip!

The cheapest option is the bus with tickets also costing around $40, this will be a sleeping coach. The journey takes about 25 hours. Even though it’s quicker and a bit cheaper, the bus can be quite uncomfortable as the seats do not fully recline. The scenery won’t be as nice as from a train either. A bus is often considered a last resort when planes and trains are all booked out. Check operatorss websites for departure location as they can differ from company to company.

The fastest, easiest and most convenient option is to take a flight to Van Don airport, especially if you are looking to arrive Halong bay fast.

Why You Should Visit Halong Bay?

Halong Bay, located in the northeastern region of Vietnam, is a natural wonder that has captured the hearts of travelers from around the world. It’s easy to see why. With its dramatic seascape of thousands of limestone karsts and islets rising majestically from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay offers a sight that’s nothing short of breathtaking.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this bay boasts a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. Its geological formations, believed to be over 500 million years old, have given rise to countless legends and stories within Vietnamese folklore, making it a place where nature and myth coexist in harmony.

Steeped in history, Halong Bay’s name itself translates to “Descending Dragon Bay,” and this name hints at the legend surrounding its creation. According to local mythology, the bay was formed when dragons came down from the heavens and spat jewels and jade into the sea, creating a natural fortress to protect the land from invaders.

Beyond its legends, Halong Bay is also home to various indigenous communities, primarily living in floating fishing villages. Understanding Halong Bay is about appreciating not only the geological marvel that it is but also the cultural heritage and rich history that continues to make it a captivating destination for travelers seeking a blend of natural beauty and authentic experiences.

Lucy was really great to work with. All the guides were wonderful and informative. The private transportation was absolutely worth the upgrade and we were happy with the excursions. The location of the hotel in Saigon (adora art hotel) was not the greatest as there was not a lot we could walk to. San premium hotel in Hanoi was fantastic as is was close to the old quarter and the train street. Hermes luxury cruise in Halong bay was truly 5 star and well worth the upgrade. Everything went very smooth. The only thing in Ho Chi Minh was the waiting at the airport for 5 hours. We finished the ChuChi tunnels tour and arrived at the airport 5 hours prior to our flight. I feel like we could have left the hotel a little later. Other than that, our private tour in Vietnam was amazing.

Choosing the time to travel to Halong is also very important that can affect your trip.

During May to July being the summer in Northern Vietnam, there are many domestic tourists choose Ha Long as the destination to relax in the beach. If you travel to Halong Bay in June and July, there are often typhoons pouring into the North of Vietnam. The landscape on the bay, accordingly, will be gloomy. We exchanged some AUD at an airport booth & got a very good rate, it was very convenient.

When we were there a few days later I used an atm & the rate was very similar but with bank fees. I believe the gold shops give a good rate too.

They get very busy though so I would only bother if you are changing large amounts.
